Last night I paid Onion's a visit. I had been hoping to go to a Vietnamese place that was supposed to have the best Pho in town but it had closed. Anyone who lives in Central Pa knows that one has to construct an "Asian Archipelago" of establishments like islands. Connecting differing locales that offer decent Asian food. Some tips. The Chinese is almost universally bad. Except for Hong Kong Garden and other exceptions. Same with the Sushi. Thai can be good but it helps to include the Harrisburg region. The Vietnamese is definitely the Asian go-to, being that a good deal of Vietnamese settled here after leaving Vietnam. The Korean is non-existent. Except for isolated stand-alones. So, when I posted that Onions is the best Korean food in town, I followed it up with another FB post as the "only." That said, I have little Korean cred. Although, I did go with a Korean-born Californian to Onions previously and he pronounced it "Not Bad." Which is a pretty decent Kimshi Kudo. I had the Beef Bulgogi and I have to state that besides being a little dry like jerky (over-marinated) it was delish. Onions is, as described by another Yelper, "1/3 Korean, 2/3's Greasy Spoon Diner." Greasy chopsticks? I'd love to see them go all out Korean but easy for me to say. Although the food scene in Lancaster City is diversifying, Lancaster is still a town that is primarily a residence versus a tourist destination who perhaps have more cosmopolitan tastes. It bugs me that there are few ethic restaurants in the city getting a solid crowd night-after-night, besides The Himalayan, while chic subpar restaurants like Iron Hill who has good beer but decidedly over-priced average food, is packed. Being on the edge of the city with a parking lot helps. Put your money where your mouth is and perhaps establishments like Onions Cafe will be able to ground itself more fully into Korean soil. Right now, it is the best we have but it could be better.

Great little restaurant! Not fancy or high end by any means, but definitely a great place. Lancaster has very limited options in terms of Korean food, so while the Korean here is not what you'd find in NYC or LA, it's worth your time and money. The waitstaff are very friendly, professional, personable, and made me want to come back. I had the dolsop bi bim bop, and my friend ordered a kimchi-flavored fish soup. We both walked away very satisfied and plan to return again soon.

As a Korean living in central PA, I missed the good Korean food that my mom made and the Korean restaurants that used to be around me. Central PA lacks Korean restaurants so when I came across this place...I was so excited. I can't speak for other items on their menu but their Korean food is not good here. If you want good quality, real Korean food, I would suggested taking a farther drive to Philly, DC, NJ, or NY.

I have been here with my friends. We had ordered different food each of them then we tried each dishes as well. I think u can have good dinner if u go there. I want recommend Korean food in the all menu. Good taste good spicy. And I want emphasize the worker service quality. There is one woman waitress when we been there and some costomers too, it was such a busy time but she didn't forget smile, clean up left food, and what costomers ordered. It was very good impression for us. I can say it is better than other restaurant. Let's go there !

I think this might be Lancaster's only Korean food served in a restaurant. We visited this place when it opened many years ago. Wife and I agree that it's improved. An offering of about a dozen korean dishes were on the menu along with typical Pennsylvania sandwich shop selections. Actually had lunch with my parents and wife. We each ordered something different. My duk mandu guk was really good. Wife had kimchee soup... Dad had bim bim bap. .. Mom had kimchee fried rice. We all stepped away from the table happy and two of us had "to go" boxes. We'll be back when we visit Lancaster.

Just visiting the area and was in the mood for ramen. Read the reviews and thought i'ld give Onion Cafe a try. Mistake! I could have saved myself five bucks and bought a package of top ramen and added egg to it. I ate a couple of bites, paid my check and left sorely disappointed and still hungry. Too bad, I was really looking forward to a nice hot bowl of "authentic" ramen. Seek your cravings else where.

My coworkers and I went in for lunch with a party of six, and there were few in the restaurant, meaning we got to sit wherever we wanted. Two of my coworkers were familiar with Korean food and had suggestions, but the waiter was confused when I had a question about one dish. I decided on the Tuk Kuk Ramen. The menu itself is kind of odd-- two-thirds greasy spoon diner, one-third Korean. So many condiments! There were bright yellow beets, spicy cabbage, fried tofu strips, and pickled cucumbers. Nom! I loved getting to try out the different tiny dishes and sample different flavors! Apparently having many side condiments is the norm at Korean joints... bonus! The Ramen came out in a huge metal bowl, piping hot. The Tuk Kuk is a rice cake, basically globs of rice, cut into slices, about two-quarters-length long. That aspect of the dish was okay, but a little bit too chewy for my liking. However the spices in the broth! YUM. I was getting steamy and sweaty, which is my indication that there is pleasure occurring in my mouth. Then adding in the condiments made the soup more exciting when I started to get bored. I wished there had been some vegetables in there too, but I guess that is not the dish. Payment for a large group is always stressful, but it became more confusing when the waiter we had was replaced by a different person. The new one didn't know Korean, which was how the first waiter had written up the receipt. So we played bingo, her calling out prices and us guessing if it was ours. And the whole cash only thing, as noted in other reviews, is annoying. We had known coming there it was cash only, but it seems kind of limiting for customers. Overall, the food was great, but the service was meh. I would like to go back and try some of the other Korean dishes that looked tempting. However, I think the experience would be less enjoyable if the place was packed.

I regularly enjoy their Korean dishes, especially when the owners are waiting on me. They are very accomodating with adapting dishes to suit vegetarian requests. Try the bibambop if you are looking for some authentic fair, the Kim Che fried rice is also pretty decent. Prices are very reasonable. The decor is pretty humble, but clean and with a very neighborhood diner feel. You're likely to be seated alongside elderly neighborhood residents slurping their soup or enjoying a giant pancake.

Very nice staff and I don't mean to be negative but I feel the ramen, bi bim bop and the appetizer plates were really sub-standard. Maybe the kitchen had an off day, but I think not.

Had the urge to try something new so we ended up here for the Korean food. I wish I could tell you the names of the dishes we ordered. One was a noodle dish with shrimp that was very nice, I recall it was made of potato starch noodles, that resembled Thai glass noodles, but had a wonderful sesame oil flavor that reminded me more of Japanese food. The other dish was beef bulgogi which was very tasty too. The serving sizes were generous, and the prices fair. The assortment of Korean sides was fun and kept us busy while we waited for our entrees. The dining room was clean and nice, if not fancy. You could tell they have a loyal local clientele, which gave the place a friendly feel. We both really enjoyed our meal, and are planning on getting back again soon.

If anything this place is about a 3.5 in my book. I went there one day w a friend and the order taking process is a fuc*ing mess. First they make you feel like you are a nuisance by coming in and wanting to place an order. Like somehow your getting in their way. Secondly, they don't do cards which nowadays it's harder not to have a FREE card reader like Square or the PayPal one. Like you really must not want to do cards and save the 2 cents it cost to process. Frugal as fu*k really. The lady has an attitude and NO UTENSILS are ever included. Honestly, if you're trying to reach out past the regulars in Lancaster that frequent this place, pull your head out of your ass and offer some decent customer service. I will never recommend this place to anyone, ever. *sorry for the French.

The food itself was good, however the service was rather unpleasant like every time we asked for something the server either disregarded our request or rolled her eyes like asking for a glass of water is a arduous task and we were quite nice. Then they had the nerve to add some sort of 20% hidden gratuity charge on the bill after such lousy service, I would tip them that amount if they deserved it but not after that service.

This is as basic a dining experience that you can have, and yet it's really awesome. I've come here for years for breakfast, which is so-so but insanely cheap. So I was underwhelmed by the idea of having dinner here a few weeks ago on a First Friday when my friends ended up here because everything else was sooooo packed. I'm so glad they talked me into coming here. The Korean specialties are as authentic as it gets, and also crazy cheap. My partner spent 2 months in Soeul, South Korea and he was blown away by how tasty and authentic the Korean food was. Definitely add this to your short list. Don't expect glitz and glam and refined service and you'll be a convert like I am.

4 stars because it's cash only and closes at 8 pm. However, the korean food is delicious!!! I ordered the squid and it was soooo yummy. Nice and spicy and it came with a ton of vegetables. It came with 4 banchan (side dishes) and everything was excellent. Pickled yellow radish, kimchi, picked cucumber, and the other I forget, sorry! I will definitely be going back for the korean food...next on my list is to get the bibimbap, but that's only if I can resist the squid! I can't comment really on the "american" offerings, but it seemed like traditional diner food...sandwiches, french fries, etc. The inside of the place is a bit plain, but I liked the atmosphere. Simple and homey, maybe a bit rundown but I like that sort of thing. The restroom was clean. The waitress (only one there) was really friendly and talking with all the patrons, it was evident to me she knew most of the people in there on a first name basis. She made sure my water was filled and chatted me up a bit too. I will definitely be going back as often as I crave some Korean food!

The waitress didn't know what any of the Korean dishes were, which didn't matter because they were bland (and she was wrong when she asked the cooks anyway). The starters were just awful. I've had better from neighborhood joints in NY. And they don't take credit cards, which you don't discover until you pay, because the sign outside is written in bright red ink against a white background. Nothing like a nighttime hike to an ATM. Plus 2 bowls of Be Bim Bob = $22. Come on..

We arrived at 7:30 sharp. The restaurant is supposed to be open until 8PM, but the waitress told us, "You can only get something to go, we're about to close." As we left, the waitress promptly went outside and lit up a cigarette. What a poor business practice. We WILL NOT be back.

Love this place. No none sense, Korean and American food all in one location. Local art adorns the walls and the people watching through the big glass windows is excellent. Chill, low key and affordable. Did I mention the food is yummy. I personally love the ramen soup. This is authentic ramen soup chocked full of goodness.

Very mediocre... Too bad it's the only Korean option in town.

Only Korean restaurant in the area. The only thing worth ordering is the pork bolgogi, which is very good. Everything else is bland or doesn't have the right mix of egg and or beef with veggies. I'd go again just for the pork bolgogi.

Yummy. Best (and probably only) Korean food in Central Pennsylvania. Very reasonably priced. Understandably, we're not in NY - THIS IS LANCASTER - we're simply lucky to have Korean food. Easy to overlook many of the shortcomings (including cash only, atmosphere) because of the wonderful flavors. Small, quaint neighoborhood atmosphere. Recommend Take Out. Bring Cash!

We went for breakfast on a Saturday morning. We were planning on going to Rachel's Creperie but the line out the door dissuaded us. Too bad, Rachel's has delicious food. But enough about Rachel's... When we walked in to Onion's I was a little put off by how white and poorly decorated the place was, but that shouldn't affect anyone's decision on where to eat. There were no open tables so we sat at the bar. The waitress was busy but a busboy was quick to serve us coffee. We were given menus and were impressed with how cheap the breakfast items were. (I have to be honest, I didn't even look at the pricing for the rest of the menu) After a few minute wait, the waitress returned to take our order. I got eggs with bacon, toast and homefries. The bacon was a little overdone but no biggie. My hubby ordered cream chip beef on toast with homefries. He had no complaints. Our coffee was refilled once and offered a second time. The bill came when we were ready for it, and we left full and happy. We'll definitely be back to try some of their Korean food or maybe one of their burgers. I've heard good things about them, too!

I've had worse Korean food and I've had better. Since it's the only gig in town I'll try it again rather than drive to Baltimore to my favorite place. This place is a little divey but fine. I haven't tried anything non-Korean on the menu.

Onion's Cafe is a truly a hidden gem. Tucked into a niche on a quiet small-town street, it looks like an unassuming diner. The menu bears this out, with lots of cheap, greasy diner fare. But wait - do we spy Korean specialties hidden in the corner of the menu? The Korean items listed were few, but we suspected a place like this would be willing to go off-menu. There were a couple hitches trying to get the waitress to communicate our requests to the cook (who spoke next to no English), but she helpfully called the cook's wife (co-owner) who was happy to assist. The dumplings were a little strange (friend were much better than steamed), but everything else was outstanding. The best homemade kimchi we've ever had was coupled with takuan (picked daikon) and a couple other small banchan. We asked for and received gochujang ("The red stuff?"), which was actually brown (homemade) and had a wonderfully complex flavor. For entrees, we enjoyed scalding, spicy kimchi jigae, bulgogi, and the off-menu pajeon. All were equal to or better than mainstream restaurant fare, and at less than half the price. Even with a massive tip, we left under $40, stuffed and with 4 more meals' worth of leftovers. While this is an unlikely spot for good Korean food, it's well worth the trip - especially since it's conveniently between Harrisburg and Philadelphia, should you be traveling between them in your future. Don't miss it!

I was here a few weeks ago and truthfully I don't remember what I had, but I liked it. I'd never had kimchi before but I loved it. I'm glad we went there! The waitress was super friendly and passed on some interesting facts about the restaurant and korean food. They did make my noodles spicy when I requested them to even though it wasn't listed as spicy on the menu. Definitely worth a visit!

You will not find a more authentic place at a decent price. The food is organic and fresh and the side dishes that accompany the meal are quite tasty. Eclectic inside and generally a fun crowd. Too bad no alcohol but just a fun place, with affordable food, and great friendly service. GO!

Onion 's cafe serves both Korean and American food.We went here,on a friday night around 7:30,only to find out that the place closes at 8pm! As my husband and I LOVE korean food,we ordered the kimchee jigae(a spicy stew with pickled cabbage, vegetables and meat- I ordered it with pork). My husband had the bulgogi. Both dishes were delicious,it came with the usual accompaniments of pickled radishes, fish cake, cucumbers and sauce. The entire bill came up to $21,unfortunately they take only cash. Overall it was a very enjoyable experience and definitely a place I will be visiting again. As the previous reviewer(David P) said- it truly is a hidden gem and I wish more people would patronise it.

I was really surprised to find a restaurant serving Korean food in Lancaster! After reading the reviews on Yelp, I had to check it immediately. I went with a group of 5 people, and ordered bibimbap, kimchi jjigae, and some teriyaki dishes. They were good, but not like authentic good. The restaurant is small so make sure to come when it's empty.
