This place has the absolute best subs in the area. They are hand made with top notch ingredients. The portions are gigantic, and I almost always have left overs. Seriously, the chains like subway do not even come close to the quality of this food. Just know that the place is rather small, so you will want to most likely get your subs to go.

This place is the sandwich version of the soup nazi from Seinfeld. It's well worth the visit. I ordered the G9 - roast beef turkey & bacon with everything. Best sandwich in Harrisburg!

Great value for the money along with great taste. Rolls made fresh daily. You have your selection from hoagies, grinders and subs, as well as party plarters

Good basic sandwiches. Good value too. GPS led us astray, but we made it. The corned beef was tasty, although I'd like it cut thicker. Same with my husband's ham. Just the right amount of meat, too.

Great place for subs! The menu was so big, I didn't see the grinder options, or else I would have gotten my Italian as a grinder. About average time for a sub. It's a little small in there so people get clogged up around the cash register trying to pay or leave. Despite the grumpy cashier, it was totally worth it for the food. Will come back. Especially cause of their great location just off of the highway.

The subs here are really fantastic and so are the prices. I just wish they would make their own bread (pretty sure its bought elsewhere). That is the one thing holding them back from superiority. It would also be nice if they started making hot subs and cheese steaks. A plate of fries would be good too. Still, this place gets 2 thumbs up from me (three if I had an extra).

Worst potato salad & coleslaw I've EVER had in my life and I'm 53 years old.horrible I will never go there again!!!!

Very good flavor combinations on the sandwiches, though I thought the meat/bread was just average compared to what is out there nowadays. Still, passing through the area, if I wanted to get a good sandwich, I would return.

When I moved to PA everyone raved about this place. I was a little skeptical especially from seeing the outside. It is a little dated and has that "hole in the wall" atmosphere but WOW....you can't find a sub like theirs anywhere. We always get the G9 Grinder. Very filling, the bread is delicious and anyone we take there loves it. Don't let the decor fool you, the food is fantastic.

Used to love this place... The prices have gone up and the quality has gone down. Payed almost 10 bucks for a grinder that was small and flavorless. I remember the days where you could get an Italian grinder here for around 5 bucks and couldn't even fit it in your mouth it was so stuffed. Sadly this place is going downhill...

I'm a little disappointed in the reviews that other patrons have had about The Sandwich Man. I also feel that in giving a positive review, I might not be fully heard considering the other mixed and negative reviews given. So, this review will be an aggregation of pros and cons, followed by a recommendation. Pro: I have been going to The Sandwich Man for nearly 15 years. I have only ever had the G9 (delicious grinder with turkey, beef, and bacon)--my friends have tried other sandwiches and have been pleased (the tuna melt, other grinders), but the consensus seems to be that the G9 is king here. I get with everything (lettuce, tomatoes, mayonnaise, oil and vinegar) and hot peppers on the side (so you can load them as much as you want). When it comes to subs, the G9 is something that all foodies have to try. It's the pinnacle of the submarine sandwich experience, and I haven't found much better in my travels. Con: The parking sort of sucks. It's not an easy location to deal with. The seating kind of sucks. When you walk in, everyone always looks at you. You feel out of place even as you order. It's funny, though, because just as soon as you sit down, you find yourself uncomfortably staring at everyone else that walks in. However, like all of my reviews, I'd like to make this point: this establishment doesn't make any attempts at being what it isn't. They don't tell you to appreciate any sort of fine dining and they don't comment on the atmosphere, or the parking, or the "buckled floor" that somehow ruined a previous patron's eating experience. You come to The Sandwich Man to get a solid sandwich, and if you go my route and get the G9, you'll be getting the same awesome sandwich for 15 years without fail. Come in with an open mind and eat a great sandwich. I would normally give this three stars, but I'm bumping it up to four to make a point. It's Harrisburg. Enjoy these establishments, because they are few.

Seriously disappointed in the customer service, sanitation and the food. Had a whole long post written, but decided less is more.

Best Rueben I've ever had. Generous amount of meat on great bread. This hole in the wall restaurant was a surprise gem. The first clue was the full parking lot and the line to the door. Definitely give it a try. It's on our regular restaurant list now.

The sandwich man gas some of THE BEST subs and sandwiches in the area. Try their grinders. You won't leave here hungry.

I love Sandwich Man!! Subs are huge and very tasty! Prices are reasonable. It's unfortunate they no longer sell beer to-go; however they still get 5 stars because food is that good!

Got the number 4, which happens to be my lucky number. It was delish! The prices are great. Perfect place if you want a yummy sandwich with fresh ingredients for a reasonable price.

Got a large Italian sub, the meat was sliced so thin the roll looked empty, the 6 pieces of lettuce that they put on thought it was a joke and .50¢ extra for the small amount of hot peppers. At one time they used to have good subs

The place is small, the parking is odd, access is US-22 westbound for cars, and during prime service hours, it gets busy - you wait in line. This isn't a place for fine dining. It's essentially a dive bar without the bar (though they do have beer to buy). They make delicious sandwiches. My favorite is the G5 subbed with provolone instead of the swiss. You can go to one of the many local Subways (there are five within roughly 10 miles of where I live), but why do that when you can get a superior sandwich here. If you don't like the crowds, stay away during prime hours. Also, you can place an order for takeout which is convenient.

The location is a bit unusual as I have to exit to the right and make it over into the left lane to make a u-turn to get back to work after lunch (no left turn from the parking lot) and I wish the people making the food wore white shirts that were actually white (they're sort of grey but you could tell at one point they were white). It's sort of a dive. The lady behind the counter taking the orders yells out your order when it's done and you'd better come to the counter to get it or she'll have something sassy to say. All that being said, they make the best Italian sub I've ever had. I call ahead for lunch and it's ready when I get there. I ask for banana peppers and they load it up. The bread is awesome. The mayo is like no other. Other than taking the long way and the dirty-looking shirts on the employees, I'm willing to overlook it all for the food. I'm going there tomorrow. I made the mistake of getting a large the first time...I made four meals out of it! Now I just get the regular and make two meals out of it. Lots of meat and wrapped well...five bucks. I have been in the place about ten times this year and never feel like people are staring at me like some reviewers said. It's just a small place and I guess when someone walks in when it's busy, sometimes the eye turns toward the movement. Not a problem for me.

If you come here and do not know what to order, go for the Turkey Bacon sub with mayo, lettuce, onions, tomatoes and sweet peppers (the sweet peppers are super good and special in my opinion) and salt/pepper spices. The roll/bread that the sub is made with is also special - the best around. I have come here many times in the last ten years (or so since finding this place) and have had only 3 or 4 experiences where the sub wasn't the best. Out of these few times, it seems that the prep folks used the heel of the turkey slices and just was not as fresh tasting as normal. So a bad experience with the product can happen, but is not the norm, ...though is it just the luck of the draw in the timing of the visit? Not sure, but my dozens of other visits where the sub is not only fantastic but actually special (just out of this world) does outweigh the few negative experiences. I've only tried a few of the others kinds of subs a few times as the Turkey Bacon is my favorite (so good, why try something else). The turkey and bacon is almost always loaded on. The sweet peppers which are fantastic put the sub over the top as the best sub around. This sandwich is usually so stuffed with meat, it is difficult to eat without spilling some onto the paper it is packaged in (a mark of a truly awesome sandwich). Could Sandwich Man Management (i.e., Mgmt) improve some things here in the physical facility? Yes. One suggestion is to move the call ahead orders well away from the ordering line (which is always long during the lunch/supper hours since these are the best subs in the area for the price). Mgmt could consider a pick up window/line for the call ahead orders, just to assist customers in getting in/out (i.e., efficiency) during these peak hours. Then again, maybe they don't care about the customers' time after all, but a separate line during the busy hours is necessary, ...yes, necessary. A few times when it was so busy, I've seen those waiting in line to place their order not wanting to move aside for those who have called ahead and placed a phone order - it has a potential to get ugly. Remember, you're dealing with hungry people. Will Sandwich Man mgmt provide a solution? So far, in the last 10-15 years, they haven't changed anything. So not expecting to see even necessary changes. Eating here is not as bad as it sounds, as long as there is an available table. It is a dive, but once seated, one can really enjoy the sandwich (which is what is all about here). I'm a big guy, so have to eat at one of the table/booths as the bar seating is for smaller adults or children and seem like they are from a prior time. (Could Mgmt not reconsider this area and fix it? Yes. Why haven't they? Guess business is good enough without all the expensive remodeling of the physical facilities. I have not tried any of the other locations other then this location (old route 22/Allentown Blvd location), which does need improvements/changes. We try to call ahead and take out mostly, as we have children and don't want to fight the line with them in tow. The one main guy behind the cash register is almost always approachable, unless he is on the phone taking a call ahead/phone order, and usually friendly. Customer service, even for a dive, could be improved. Stay focused on the goal, which is the food/product! Parking during peak times can be an issue, though the parking down around in the back does require a walk on the driveway. There usually is room back there to park. I've focused on the negative aspects (just to be real) and maybe it is nitpicking to some, but 90-95% of my visits have seen an excellent/out of this world tasting sub sandwich and I'm planning on coming back. The prices are reasonable making for a decent value. 4 out of 5 stars due to only a few bad experiences which have happened in the past 10-15yrs. I usually average at least one visit a month, as I live in a different county and go to Harrisburg limitedly, but after having one of these subs, I usually start planning on coming back for another one.

Parking is odd and the place is a little dumpy but these folks know how to make a great sub sandwich. Try the G8. I have dreams about the G8. Keep up the good work. Remember, it's not fine dining but it is fine food.

  • Leigh T.

Prices are very reasonable. Platters come with potato salad and coleslaw. The coleslaw, potato salad, chicken salad are all very sweet. A little too sweet. They also offer nice extra side dishes like a side of bacon or sweet peppers. The portions are very generous. A side order of bacon is literally a side of crispy bacon.

Great classic sub shop off the highway. Good alternative to fast food on a road trip.

  • Matthew L.

The sandwiches here are AWESOME! I usually get the Italian or the Super Combo. The girl gets the Turkey. With prices competative with Subway, you can't go wrong if you in the mood for a cold sub, as this place has em beat hands down.

  • Adam K.

I just stopped in to get a sub even though the parking lot was full. Big mistake. It took me almost thirty minutes to get one hoagie. Slow and slower were making the food. I have never seen a group of workers so apathetic towards their job or their customer. The woman working (slower) actually told a customer she purposely worked slow because if she worked fast she made mistakes. Really? How many ingredients on a sandwich? 6 to 8? I then saw her have to scrape the toppings off one sandwich because she forget to toast it, then forget to add peppers on another. I am not sure what options are left for someone who can't mentally handle the rigors of making sandwiches when it's busy, but this place might be better off finding workers who care. Two stars for the actual food, which was great. Too bad I won't go back.

First I wish they would fix the floor. As soon as you walk in the floor is buckling. Parking outside is odd but nothing that cannot be overcome. But to me I have to give this place 2 stars because it is the totality of the dinner experience that is judged. I ordered a Danish Ham Grinder with Hot peppers. My sandwich wasn't even warm and I cannot attribute this to the place being too busy. We were the only ones there at the time. I also thought that the quality of ham used was quite lacking to say the least. Just the overall sandwich was disappointing and doesn't leave me with a desire to return. So that combine with the horrible floor and odd parking I give 2 stars. I know that there are some places that just blow your mind when it comes to their food but yet have crappy parking lots or are super tiny inside. These negatives in that type of situation can be overlooked, but not here.

Good sandwich! Love it. The price is right here. You got lots of it. Also they have very good chili pepper. You can also eat in or take out. Pretty busy place. They also open 'till later. I suggest to call the order first, so you don't have to wait. Definitely love it.

this USED to be the best sub shop in Harrisburg when the father ran the place- now its turned into a run down and in need of repair place that served me a sub that the meat tasted sour- they now run out of sub rolls so often that there is not even a concern on the part of the employee they tell you business is better when its not and if your place USED to be stand in line full and now its normally empty the current manager I think it's his angry son wont even take a call from a customer- i guess the complaints are so MANY that you are not willing to MAN UP and address the complaint- i was told to write a letter or leave my number to never receive a call back

This place is amazing!! Get the turkey and bacon. They pile bacon and turkey on that sucker, you definitely get your money's worth! The bread is pretty good too, crispy on the outside and nice n' soft on the inside.. delicious! Also any sandwich I've gotten there they pile on the meat and toppings, you can barely fit the sandwich in your mouth. In other reviews people say its packed during peak hours...well duh. It's gonna be packed on a Saturday during lunch hours! It's because this place is amazing. Call ahead if you don't want to wait!! Go to this place! You won't regret it.

Same (almost) as it ever was. Which is to say...good! Good tasty subs, made BIG, with decent quality ingredients. Grinder #G5 rocks. The only negative is they no longer sell beer. But always a good satisfying sandwich for not much money.

I've been going here for about 15 years. This place is always busy and the food is outstanding. You get good quality for a reasonable price. My recommendation: G-9 loaded, w/hot peppers. (turkey-beef-bacon grinder) and a side of potato salad. The location, building and parking aren't great, so -1.

  • J R.

Looks like I'm in the minority on this one. I find their subs (G8 Grinder) to be awesome. I had about 2 inches of packed meat so there was no skimmping in that dept. Wife got a turkey/bacon sub and I swear there was half a pound of bacon on her sub. My tomatos were so fresh and tasty, lettuce fresh and crisp. Bread was perfectly crisp on my grinder. Full of flavor (I got mayo, salt, pepper and oregano with light oil). The place has weird parking but there are plenty of spots out back. We do take out so I am not concerned with the seating. I never had a bad sandwich here and the potato salad is very good.

I posted the following review before I knew how to add the business listing into Yelp but my review was actually for this Sandwich Man on Route 22. After re-reading, I stand by my first opinion. ______________________________________________________ Unimpressed. There is no better way to turn my stomach than having egg shell in egg salad .... yuck! Egg salad may be the lowest common denominator in the sandwich world because it is so hard to mess up .... but mess up the Sandwich Man did. I gave this place a second chance with the Reuben .... definitely dry and not that flavorful. Not expensive but pricey for what you get.

I have to pretty much agree with E. G. this place is very tiny, the parking is all wierd and hard to get in and out. you can only access it from rt 22 westbound. (or by waling across the street) its close to mcdonalds and holiday inn. they have a great selection of subs, sandwiches, wraps and grinders. average sandwich is 5 - 7 dollars. i think the food is alright, not bad but not excellent. however they do pack tons and TONS of bread on the sandwich, you're getting 75% bread, 25% meat. also has cold 6 packs to go. heinekin, coors, miller, yeungling, michelob, etc. prices are fair here too, not great but fair, same with brother joes or pizza hut.

  • Logan S.

These guys make the best subs in the greater Harrisburg area. Their subs are stuffed with fresh-sliced meats, cheese and chopped veggies. The flavor is phenomenal. I always order to go because the inside atmosphere is grungy and parking is at a premium. But the subs are the main attraction, full of flavor.

Love the Sandwich Man! Go with the Italian grinder, light mayo, and hot peppers. The pastrami is also solid. Great for people watching in central PA

THE SANDWICH MAN IS THE MAN!! I make it a point to stop by here every time I'm traveling from VA to NY. It's the perfect pit stop, their sandwiches are piled to the rim with meat and goodness! I live in NYC and I have never tasted such a great deli before. I reccommend the Pastrami or the Roast Beef. Also, adding the sweet peppers for an extra 50 cents is SO WORTH IT! They put oil and vinegar on there unless you say otherwise, so watch out because that can get messy. **I went there once right before they opened, and the bakery man pulled up with fresh loads of homemade loaves! Now THAT's fresh!

I want to like this place. I do. But this location is equally as bad to me. Maybe worse. My brother lived in Carlisle going to college there and apparently they have one there too. He swears by this place. I told him I wasn't that into it, but no he wanted to go to one just to reminisce. Eh. Went on a saturday. It was PACKED. This place is tiny. The seating is cramped and the line was almost out the door. The seating in the upper section was all taken, leaving a string of bar seats to sit on. We were a group of 5 so this didn't work too well. Finally a booth opened up. For some reason we got a lot of looks and stares from customers. Dunno why but lets just say this isn't an inviting place. The sandwichs are about the same with the downtown location. Again nothing great just ok. My brother enjoyed his, maybe this just isn't my kind of place. Or maybe he is just easily impressed. Whatever the case is, we waited almost 30 min for the food. 2 stars once again.

Why would you go to subway when you can have a TURKEY GRINDER? Yes, this place looks like a hole-in-the-wall but the amount of cars and the difficulty in parking should be example enough of how good it is. Fast, cheap, and your sandwich is piled high with the goodies. Stick to the grinders, they are the best. Beware the BLT - it has so much bacon, I had to REMOVE bacon from it. Perfect lunch spot.

    (4)
  • Brian R.

The quality of food here is really just average and pretty bland. Certainly nothing special, I'll leave this Sandwich Man with 3 stars because they have a decent beer selection.
