5 star all the way tho a bit spendy. Great fresh cuisine. A6 crab steamed dumpling appetizer. I had E4 Pad Puk Ruam Mid with shrimp. Light sauce and the shrimp were huge. One in mouth and can't talk!! Pineapple fried rice good lightly curried and of course Mango sticky rice to share for finish. Soo yummy They just remodeled 2mo ago. Ck out last few pix. Nice. Will come again.

I am a sucker for Thai food, love the balanced spices in their cuisine. I would go back there again if I am in the area. We enjoyed our time and service was great. This place was recommended by so many local people at the bar before coming to the restaurant and the bartender was like can you bring me some food from Bangkok 56 :) Overall I was a happy customer.

I had never had Thai food before and was very leary of trying it. That was 3 years ago and Bangkok 56 is my favorite restaurant in central PA. I have never had a bad meal and always try and bring friends/family who have not had Thai food before so I can be sure they have a great experience. So far every one of them is hooked. The waitresses are great, food is high quality and authentic. You can tell you are getting fresh vegetables/meat with every meal. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Oh man... Is this the best Thai food I have ever had or what. Just amazing. Sure the service sucks a little, but the food is just mouth watering. Your test buds will thank you for dining here. I have tried pad Thai and drunken noodles and fried tofu (appetizer) so far and they were just amazing as I said before. Be careful though, if you say hot for spices "IT IS REALLY HOT". They have this chilli sauces on the side which are awesome too if you think your food is too bland. If you are in Harrisburg I would highly recommend you to check this place out.

Last year my father and I would frequent this place every week. For the most part we ordered the same dish every visit because we loved it so much we couldn't stray. Sadly, a family tragedy kept us away but we were finally able to link up and stop by our favorite restaurant after almost 9 months. What's more sad is that it will be our last time. The food went from a solid 5 to a weak 2. The wonton soup tasted like they completely changed the recipe and went from being the best I'd ever had to one of my least favorites. The wontons are different and the broth was pedestrian. The spring rolls came out burnt, which was a first in or 80+ visits. Then the kicker was when my glass noodles came out swimming in oil and the chicken completely water logged in it. . . Gross! Being as hungry as I was, coupled with the pathetically slow service, instead of sending it back I ate it against my better judgement. Shame on me because by the time a I got home I had gotten so ill I could hardly walk, then was up all night sick. So sad. I don't know what happened, but despite claiming that they still had the same owner, all of the former amazing staff are gone and the food has taken a nose dive. Never again.

HEALTH DEPARTMENT TAKE NOTE! My soup had two flies in it. Two. My question is, what else did I eat before I noticed the two flies floating in it? I've eaten here once before - the food was tasty... but this is unacceptable. When I pointed the flies out to the waitress (who I believe is the owner) she said said "Yooo" and took it away. A minute later she came back and asked if I was ready for the main course. No apology, no attempt to make it right, no way to treat a customer. Please consider this review before eating there. It makes me wonder what we are NOT seeing. I will not return and I've started telling all of my friends in the area about this place. *** See the photo I posted to see the flies in the soup before eating here. ***

Delicious! Often in Harrisburg for work and just had another great dinner here. My favorites are the peanut curry with chicken and the pad Thai with shrimp. Best Thai around.

The wonton soup tastes like they put the instance soup in the luke warm water and throw the cold wonton in, taste terrible. The food is just meh. I came here because the great reviews but Yelp let me down. I would not recommend this place or come back again

They recently did a complete renovation of the resteraunt and what a fantastic job that did. We try to come here about once a month. They have the best Pad Thai in the area. Service is always fast and friendly, food is excellent and the prices are not bad either. Avg price for an entree is $12.00. Make sure to check the specials. You may find something you didn't expect - in a good way. Oh, try the spring rolls as an appetizer. They are fantastic. Very light and doesn't fill you up.

Enjoyable, in a word. Though plain on the outside, they have done a really nice job inside. Definitely good enough for a date but maybe not a special occasion. The menu has the classic Thai specialties. Great pad Thai and drunken noddles, spicy curries. The veggies are plentiful, fresh and not just crappy onions, but fancy asparagus and snow peas. Everything is prepared well and the portions are generous. The service is wonderful. The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars was that I have only been there once and their menu was very classic without anything unique. Highly recommend it and was very pleased with the experience. Good for kids, families, and parents. Even very picky eaters should be able to find something.

Wish I could leave 0 stars. Satay-skimpy and bland Spring rolls-greasy and boring Curries-small portion and just ok. Overpriced crap. We had to ask for extra plates to cover our food from all the flies! Nuff said!

Everything was delicious, we came an hour before closing and they were out of dumplings, ordered mussels instead. So glad we did!!!! Tom yum soup great. Both entrees fantastic, we were the only ones there from 8pm on and were not rushed at all! Highly suggest for a great Thai meal and it's BYOB !

So good. Love the muscles for an appetizer. The entree drunken noodles is also awesome.

I just came here today for the first time with my wife. As a business traveler, I often go out of my way to get Thai (in Philly) and am shocked I didn't know about this place sooner. Side note: my wife arrived about 15 minutes earlier than I did, and she got an appetizer/Thai iced tea while she was waiting for me. Despite it being 12:00 noon on a Friday with lots of folks coming in, the wait staff were very polite and understanding. I got the red curry, and it was quite flavorful and delicious. I could have taken it spicier, but I'll ask them to crank up the heat the next time around. Compared to other versions of this dish, I thought Bangkok 56 did a great version of it. My wife loved her noodle dish as well. I 'love' supporting little restaurants with great food, and this place definitely falls under that category. Congrats, Bangkok 56 Thai Cuisine. You won me over today, and I'll most certainly return!

We got take out as we were staying in Swarta for a Hershey weekend. This place was so good and such a welcome change from chain restaurant food. Curry was spicy! Larb was great. Pad Thai and fried rice were right on! Only rated 4 stars because we wanted more appetizer options! Eat here!!!!

Bangkok 56 is a superb Thai restaurant. The owners have extensive experience and recognition making Thai food. The wheat grass soup was perfectly balanced and I was surprised something so healthy could taste so good. The chicken skewer appetizers were commonplace and did not stand out like the main course. I ordered the Traditional Thai Basil sauce to go with the Seafood combination, it was spectacular. The sauce had an authoritative flavor that compounded the wide variety of seafood in the dish flawlessly, yet was not heavy and would take many servings to begin loathing. This place is legitimate and many people in the vicinity know it, so you can expect it to be busy. Carpool if you can, as their parking lot is very small; I recommend using the laundromat just east of the restaurant on the same street if there are no available spaces.

Amazing spot, wow. On vacation, went out with the family and ordered pad Thai, peanut curry, and pad prieu wahn. All dishes were stellar, I wish I had Thai places this good around me.

Best Thai I've found in Hbg. Consistent quality food and courteous staff. Reasonably priced and BYOB.

Ever see those commercials with the children in Ethiopia covered in flies and in need of your dollar? This restaurant is going for some skewed sense of authenticity as they needed to cover all of our food at the table because of the flurry of flies in the restaurant. The service was like dealing with an episode of constipation. Ordered spring rolls and got some fried nuggets. The chicken satay was as thin as my finger nail, both the meat and the sauces were uninspiring. The two curries ordered were both somewhat flavorful compared to the dishes prior, but between the small portions and all the flies we were ready to run run run so everything could leak out someplace else.

I want to give this place five stars, I do -- but I can't. They changed hands a few months ago, got a shiny new decor, and replaced all their dishes. There is a much larger staff which is much less efficient than the two ladies who used to be fixtures there. Since the change I have not encountered a single staffer who appears to be in charge or who speaks English - so this is the only mechanism I have to voice my concerns. The service is becoming very slow: the prices are increasing and the portions decreasing. The food is always tasty but inconsistent, so ordering the same thing twice can get you dramatically different meals. They still serve family-style platters but do not provide dishes for the diners to eat from. Really?? Who expects the diners to eat directly from the serving platters? I would go back to the old decor and the old dishes in a heartbeat if it would mean the fast, friendly service and consistent food I would have raved about if I'd written this review a year ago. :(

This place is great and it will definitely satisfy your Thai craving! We had the slaw, the tofu and veggie green curry and the tofu and veggie drunken noodles, all of it was really solid. My favorite was the drunken noodles. I loved the amount of veggie friendly options that they had on the menu and everything that came out of the kitchen looked great. This place looks like it was recently remodeled so do let the outside of this place for you. If I am every passing through Harrisburg again, I would for sure stop in.

Wow, best Thai food I've had... I cant believe this place is in the middle of PA. I came here with my family while on a weekend to Hershey Park. Came here on a Saturday night - slight wait, this place is obviously popular. Make reservations on the weekend. We ordered pad thai, masaman curry, crispy basil shrimp, and the whole fried snapper. Everything was super delicious, pad thai was amazing - not too sweet as some places tend to make it. Fried snapper was a little too crispy - maybe need to take it out of the fryer a little earlier, but still delicious with the chili garlic sauce. The crispy shrimp with fried basil was scrumptious. Just be careful of the chili peppers - they burn. The masaman curry was on the thin side, so we might not get that next time. We like it when it's thick like stew, but it still had good flavor. For dessert we had the mango sticky rice. I wish we didn't have to share. Service was fast and friendly. Ambience would make this a good date place.

Perhaps the selection of Thai food in Harrisburg is not very good. I thought that Bangkok 56 is catered for more of a Western taste. The restaurant looks like it's inside of a trailer. I wouldn't mind the ambiance as much if the food was good but it wasn't so I think it's fair to criticize. Nothing was exceptional except for the service. I think the waitstaff was very friendly and attentive. I also don't like how they charged $2 for each additional bowl of rice. I think we ordered 3 additional bowls. What can I say? We love our carbs. As for the food, I'm not very familiar with the area but I'm sure there is better...

From the outside the place doesn't look like much but inside the atmosphere is very good. I always seem to get the same meal every time I go here, I get the egg rolls (delicious) and the pineapple sauce they serve with them adds a little bit of a sweet flavor that makes the egg rolls even more appealing. The Thai teas are amazing and I wish they were bigger but let's be honest Thai tea in general is delicious! And the entree of choice is the pepper steak, the vegetables are crisp, the sauce is very good, not overbearing at all, and the steak has a good flavor as well. Adding the rice just helps make the taste last longer! Anyone who may be looking for Thai food in the area, well I would recommend them to try Bangkok 56!

I really enjoyed this place and have all intentions of coming back because quite a few things sounded good, but as I was craving a starch and tofu, I chose the Pad Kow (their fried rice) with tofu. It was delicious - the tofu was crispy on the outside and soft and flavorful on the inside, very well made. The rice was jasmine rice and really good and well cooked, as well as well seasoned. All the ingredients were fresh and delicious. I left full and wanting to come back. It is in a small place next to a Honda dealership with lots of random little decorations, but it is worth finding and stopping by.

wow amazing!! We came in from out of town (NYC metro area) and never had Thai as authentic and tasty as this place. The food was great! Service and people were wonderful and attentive! price is reasonable, what more can you ask for? I will definitely visit this when I'm in town again and will recommend this place to all my friends as well. Cheers!

Went there on the recommendation of a friend. Food is good - Perfect like a Thai restaurant's should be but worst than anything the waitress is extremely unpleasant and rude. 3 Things happened and we observed.... 1) Our bill was 50$. Gave 5$ Tip. Said we can take it back as it's not 15%. I now regret I should have taken the money back and left. 2) While we were having food a guy came for take-out. After he pays she hands him Tip Jar and tells him to put money in it. 3) 2 Couple were sitting and chatting after their dinner was done and they had paid the check. Place was empty and there was no one there except us and the 2 Couple . Yet the waitress goes up to them and tells ask them if they are done. I felt too bad for them. They stopped their conversation and left. Seriously they were just being relaxed and chatting. The place was anyway OPEN and not busy at all. Server/Waitress/owner is extremely mean and has an attitude. Won't go back - jus' so to avoid "the little elderly mean server/owner who stands with a tip jar"

this place is a hidden gem! i have driven by this place some many times. nothing about the outside grabs you attention, i looks like just another old build in Harrisburg, but man will the food made on the inside grab your attention and hold it. the food was so good. and tray of hot sauces is a must. the inside is clean and very stylish. my wife and i really enjoyed our meal. by the time you are done eating, pay your bill and walk out the door you can hardly believe were you are. you forget you are in Harrisburg lol. prices are very reasonable. we will be back

It's the closest Thai place to us without actually going in center city Harrisburg or across the "river". The food is mediocre and pricey and the quantity could be better. It's a small place that's hard to find even after years of going there. Parking lot is very tiny but it's always empty when we've gone there. When you walk in it's dark and the decoration is not appealing. The service staff is indifferent to you being there. Took a while to be seated, order get drinks/refill, and place order. We usually get the tofu pad thai and drunken noodles and chicken green curry. Both were okay dishes, helps us with our Thai cravings. If it weren't the only Thai place near/close to us (still takes us about 30 minutes), we'd probably never go back.

This was unlike most Thai restaurants that I have eaten. Going to the restaurant parking was limited and ended up parking down the street Ina residential area. We were seated right away however it did take the waitress longer than expected to get our drink orders, which was just water. Our appetizers came out at different times so my SO decided to wait until mine came out to eat his. I will say that I enjoyed my dinner. I ordered the red curry with shrimp. Overall the service was much like those of the other posters. What I will say is that you should not get carry out here. People ordering carry out waited a long time to the point where they should've just gotten a table and sat down to eat. Of and the "owner" did make an appearance. It's true, she didn't crack even so much as a smile as she waltzed through the restaurant from the back to the cash register. I can't say if I go back to the area this would be my first choice but it would be a good second choice.

Have you seen anybody who charge $2.00 more when you ask a drink without ice?? Yes, they charged me $2.00 more when i ordered a Thai ice tea without ice. Food is great but a bit over priced.

I've been here several times and all I can say is that Bangkok 56 is my favorite thai restaurant here in harrisburg...the place was ok nothing special about it....but the curries are superb and everything are reasonably priced...staff are nice but needs to smile more :D

  • S M.

I have no issue with the food, they are the 2nd best Thai place in a 50 mile radius. Pakha's house in dillsburg is better. I have an issue with how we were 'dupped' We had a going away party for a co-worker and I organized a family style meal, 3 courses for 12 - 15 people. I told them I wanted the cost around 15-17 per person, and we decided on 2 plates of each selection lunch size portions which actually should have added up to one plate per person diner size. The plates of food we received didnt seem too be huge by any means, but after we were done our bill was $450 when we questioned them on it, they played stupid like they didnt understand, one of the team members paid the entire bill (wanted the airline miles) and we paid him back. It ended up being over $35 per person. I am never going back there no matter how much I love Thai Food and they make the best Thai Fried rice with the soft fried egg on top.

Just moved here from Chicago and assumed I was going to get 'watered down' Thai here. Not the case. It was amazing . . . from the chicken satay to the larb. MMMMM. Check it out.

Tucked neatly away just off Paxton Street, it's easy to notice the white sign as you accidentally drive right past the small restaurant. But please, do yourself a favor and turn around. Easily the best Thai food in the area. Granted, there isn't much competition, but the quality of food is still fantastic. Oh, and it's a BYO. Onto the food. 1) The Tom Yum soup is fantastic, but the portion is a bit small. Wonderful flavors, just the right amount of spice. 2) The Pad Thai is a truly flavorful dish, but you will be getting the overly sweetened, Americanized version. Definitely a great option for a filling comfort dinner or an intro-to-Thai meal for a friend. 3) All of the curries. Seriously. They are all delicious. Make sure you specify how spicy you prefer your food, because some of the dishes can be mouth-burners. You may also have to ask for more rice. Again, the options for Thai food in Harrisburg are limited. But if you are in the mood for a spicy, aromatic dish of Asian cuisine, Bangkok 56 is definitely the place to satisfy your cravings. Why four and not five stars? Serving sizes are on the smaller size...

The most amazing thing about this place is the bathroom. It may be the most eclectically decorated thing I've ever seen. It looks like an 8 year old went overboard. That said, that's not why you pick a Thai place. But the food was damn good. I had to ask for no carrots in the pad see ew, but it was great. Very impressed.

If you we're to judge from the outside appearance and location, you would never go in. However, you will be glad you did. Food is very well done. We have been there about five times now and have never been disappointed.

I have to give Bangkok 56 my first 5 star rating because I've become a fixture at lunch time. While the physical establishment may be a turn off to some, this little spot truly has really excellent, really fresh Thai dishes. I have yet to have a dish that doesn't impress. I work in Swatara Township, so we've found Bangkok 56 to be the leading lunch spot in the area. The staff doesn't even ask us what we anymore. The staff is super courteous and the service is fast. Bangkok 56 hands down tops any Thai food I've had anywhere. My recommendations: Green curry with tofu and the Thai iced tea. This tiny spot is a culinary gem.

Still my favorite Thai place. Had a new dish today and it was out of this world. It was a glass noodle dish and it was awesome. Everything else has been good as well and the eggrolls are back to the way they used to be. I really wish they had better parking...the parking is horrible..tiny lot with cars crammed in or parking on the street somewhere and at night, not the nicest place walking back to your car several blocks away.. 7/13 update. Newly remodeled and boy is it nice. still the same great food, some new servers but its very retro now but not tacky. Its a place you can take a date to and not feel cheap. Do not be put off by the exterior.

I eat Thai food a lot. A lot. And, Bangkok 56 has, without a doubt, my favorite Thai food of any restaurant. The food is flavorful and very fresh tasting. I've had many if the items on the menu, but my favorite is their green curry. Their drunken noodles are also a crowd pleaser. Bangkok 56 is the place that I bring friends from out of town and is always where I choose when someone asks me for a restaurant recommendation. I just love it. The woman who serves is friendly and always recognizes the regulars; she's just ad fantastic as the food. I like Bangkok 56 so much that I have eaten there for lunch and dinner in the same day before. Go there. Now.

I have been coming to this place for years and it is BY FAR the BEST thai food I have ever eaten. I eat out 3-4 times a week and travel often for business and always try to find a place that can even come close to this but none ever can. Get the Cry Of Tiger as an app and the Thai Chicken (or other meat) Basil as your main course and your stomach and pallet will love you. Seriously - you will not find better Thai than this. It's a nice quaint little place and BYOB so bring a bottle of wine if you like to drink. 5 stars, hands down.

Have eaten here quite a few times and the food never dissapoints. Fresh vegetables and bold flavors are very refreshing. On this visit I had the Wonton Soup which has a rich broth and is seasoned perfectly. For our entrees we had the Pad Khi Mao, which is one of my favorite dishes, and Panang Curry. Both are full of wonderful flavors with a touch of heat. Overall, I highly encourage a visit to this establishment. It may not be the fanciest of restaurants, but you can count on the food to make up for it.

Upon entering the restaurant, a waitress did not greet me at all after I said Hi and basically looked at me from head to toes. I had my business jacket on and dressed very nicely by the way. I would think that Bangkok 56 décor inside and out would not require someone to dress up anyway so I wasn't sure what her problem was. She proceeded by pointing her finger to me and dragging her finger to one of the tables. VERY rude manner to start off with. Menu was provided and food was delivered. I ordered Pad Se Ew, which was ok - nothing to write home about and wasn't terrible. As a Thai, I can tell you that it is still way far from being authentic. In the middle of my meal, I noticed that my waitress took her time preparing and cutting ingredients on one of the dining tables in the middle of the restaurant where everyone could see. I have never seen anything like this before and thought that this practice is not very hygienic because she was multi-tasking between food prep, serving, and cashier. Not to mention that her priority was on those ingredients not customers. Everytime she was called for service, she acted like someone trying to pull her teeth. My water was not filled even once. Never again.

The Wife and a parent joined me in giving this place a try. Small little place, as you enter they have their specials board listing what the cook feels like doing for extra credit. The server was friendly and patient as we took our time reading over each section of the menu. Considering we were the only ones in here at 6PM on a Thursday there was no real rush. We got a variety, I opted for the Pineapple curry, the wife with Drunken noodles, and parent ordered the peanut curry. There were no complaints anywhere except from myself, and my complaint was only due to the fact that I underestimated the spiciness of the dish. I've gotten a few curries in my lifetime ranging from mild to holy dear god shoot me. This came just below getting kicked in the nuts by a midget. Now don't get me wrong, it tasted fantastic, I just wish after the first 4 bites, I could have tasted more of it. I tried some of the peanut curry and it was much more mild than mine. Since my wife adores spicy things, we swapped for a little and I had some of her noodles, which were also tasty. She pretty much devoured my dish, which was fine, I couldn't taste anymore anyway. After the meal, we were feeling like we could fit a little more in, so we decided to get 1 of each of the desserts they serve. With the exception of the fried banana, everything was excellent. The banana wasn't bad either, it was just, a fried banana. Not a whole lot I can say about it. After the pain I was still in, I ate mostly the coconut ice cream, which was fantastic. Definitely a nice little hidden gem

Love this place. The food is fantastic, the prices are LOW, the service is great. I can walk out with two entrees and an app for $14. The owner is the brother in law of the owner of Bangkok Wok in Mechanicsburg. Apparently he and his wife wanted to open a place on the East Shore and so Bangkok 56 was born. It doesn't look like much on the outside but I think it's the best bargain for the area. Personal fave? The Tofu Red Curry. Even my meat eating husband digs their tofu.

We stopped on a trip from NYC to points west. Having eaten in a variety of Thai restaurants, including one of us in Thailand, we have no problem giving Bangkok 56 5 stars. One if us had the pad woon sen while the other had the peanut-based curry. In sum, they were both very good & authentic. Even the Thai ice tea had a deeper, more woody taste than most places. The booth next to us giddily ordered the tapioca. We were too stuffed to have dessert, but it sounded good. It is much better than Lemongrass in Pittsburgh near the convention center.

  • Christopher M.

The restaurant decor has a lot to be desired. But besides that they have the best Pad Thai I've ever had in the US! Hands down! And they actually make it spicey when you ask for it that way! The thai iced tea is good. The staff is quite pleasant. I definitely recommend this spot!

This is a small little thai place, just off of the 13th street exit of I-83, just go up to Paxton Street and turn right and its on your right. It is open from lunch until dinner. they have a few small parking spots in front where you can park. it is really fancy on the inside with all kinds of hand carved wooden elephants. the thai royalty always held elephants in pretty high regard and no one was allowed to own them except for the king. the prices range from 2.50 to 12.95. it did take some time to freshly cook everything but it was well worth it. sample food: spring rolls, crispy tofu, fish cakes, pan steamed mussles. tom yum soup, cry of tiger, ground pork salad, seafood salad, shrimp salad, theres a large selection of curry specialties: green, red, mussamun, pineapple, ginger, peanut and koh 56. pad thai, pad khi ,ao, pad see-ew, lad na, beef noodle soup, etc. they serve coke and hot thai tea. you can also get extra jasmine rice. the tom yum is so tasty, and the staff was really pleasant and explained what some of the dishes were that were only in thai language.

My favorite Thai restaurant in Harrisburg. The 'Thai Basil' is one of my favorite dishes of all time. Everything else is fantastic too! I compare every Thai restaurant to Bangkok 56 and haven't found one as good.

Don't want to discount this place too soon, but my first experience was mediocre at best. Ordered takeout last night, got the usual fare- green curry with tofu for myself and green curry with chicken for my boyfriend. We aren't big takeout patrons, but we just moved here and the kitchen is still full of boxes. I digress... My initial reaction was that the curry (chicken) was more like soup than curry. My boyfriend (a guy who is by no means a health junkie) was appalled by the level of oil in the dish. The flavors were fine for me, but the consistency was off and the vegetables cut too thick/large. Since we ordered such a standard (read: boring) dish, I was slightly disappointed to see that they couldn't execute it. Likely won't order takeout from there again and will explore Yelp a bit more before we decide on Thai again.

One of my favorite Harrisburg restaurants! Great food, and affordable! It doesn't look like much from the outside...it looks like it's in a portable trailer type building, and the decorations are a little tacky...but oh the food is good. We always get the Tom Yum soup, Mussuman curry, pad thai, and if mangoes are in season, the Mango sticky rice, which is a must if they have it! All these are great dishes.

If you're looking for delicious Thai cuisine, then Bangkok 56 is your spot! My favorites include: pineapple fried rice with chicken and vegetable pad Thai. For a small appetizer try the spring rolls, complete with a yummy dipping sauce. Also, the Thai tea is a sweet combination of tea and milk. It's a must have! The food tastes so fresh and it's served quickly. I will say, the decor could use some help. But don't let the atmosphere fool you, the food is amazing!

I went here with a few friends after snowtubing, and the food was surprisingly good. It's hard to find good Asian cuisine near the Middletown area, but Bangkok 56 was a pleasant surprise. We split the tom yum soup, and it was just spicy enough without burning my mouth. The flavors were wonderful. I then ordered a Kow Pad 56 with chicken. The fried rice was just a little sweet, but it packed a lot of flavor, and the fried egg added well to that. A friend also ordered a whole crispy red snapper and we split it. The flavor of the skin was wonderful, and the skin was edible, which was pretty cool. The fish inside was nice and tender. The whole meal wasn't very expensive either. It made for a very nice evening. The service was great too. The waitress gave us suggestions and even helped to bring over more chairs because there were quite a few of us. The restaurant is very intimate, but it looks quite authentic, with statues and miscellaneous decorations all around and calming Thai music playing.

After years eating in Philadelphia, NYC, and Jersey, we frequently struggle with finding a good place to stop to eat on our way home from the Susquehanna valley. Yelp led us to this fantastic Thai place conveniently located near the highway. For a causal, reasonably priced, fresh, flavorful meal, this place gets 4.5 stars. That being said, this is not a fine dining experience - just delicious, authentic good food served by gruff, but sincere, staff in clean yet charmingly non-descript environs. We had the eggplant basil special, chicken drunken noodles, and the best Thai ice tea ever and loved our dinner so much that we grabbed two more entrees for lunch at work the next day. We will definitely be back and no longer dread the long drive home from weekends up in Central PA.

My favorite Thai place in Harrisburg. Delicious pad thai, tom yum, curries, salads, and of course mango and sweet rice. Easy to miss - tiny parking area. Reasonable prices and friendly staff.

Best squid in a curry I have ever had. Finally tried the old classic Panang and man.... it was delicious. I used to also comment on the portion size but as of late I have just added the $2.00 veggies to my curries there (you can add extra veggies/meat for $2) and the portion has been more than enough. It does have such a rich flavor and more and more I find the portions just right or go for the addition. Great staff.

Everything I have had at Bangkok 56 has been delicious. The only reason I held back to four stars is because I don't think I have sufficiently sampled the menu to say, without a doubt, that this is the best Thai restaurant in the area and that it deserves a full 5 stars. That being said, the food is very good. I don't expect everything to be "the best ever", that's impossible. But it's impressive when you can say that about even one or two items, which is the case here. The tom kha gai is absolutely wonderful. It's a perfect mix of sweet and citrusy. The chicken and mushrooms are sliced thin (which I love) and the soup is not overloaded. In comparison, the tom kha gai at Bangkok Wok has much thicker sliced chicken and is loaded up with more vegetables (including tomato), which normally I would like, but in this instance it takes away the soup's loveliness as a delicate dish and turns it into something more gauche, in my opinion. The kanom jeeb (a Thai dumpling made of crab and shrimp) sounds good, but it actually tastes even better. The real star at this restaurant, however, is the green papaya salad. Good lord, I think I found my drug of choice. This stuff is really top notch. The mix of the fish sauce, lime and pixie dust are unbeatable. (Pixie dust may not be a real ingredient, but there is some sort of otherworldly magic in this concoction.) I literally have to stop myself from going there on a daily basis for this salad. The same dish at Bangkok Wok does not hold a candle. Perhaps in the coming months I will be able to change this to a five star rating. I will gladly sample the menu and find out... but I'm saving room for that green papaya salad. UPDATE: love this place, and i've sufficiently sampled the menu and feel confident saying it's definitely five stars. hands down the best thai on the east or west shores!

This small, unpretentious restaurant is nearly around the corner from me, so I've eaten here probably a dozen times. I can't say that this is an astonishing, amazing, unique place... but if you're looking for Thai, it does the job quite nicely. Sometimes the service is fabulous, sometimes it's kind of slow. (Ironically, the slower service is usually when the place is dead. We sometimes wonder if they forgot about us or went to take a nap...) I will say that the portions are small compared to the same prices at other Thai places I've been to... and I've always been confused about the lunch vs. dinner portions/prices... because they seem like the same size, the dinner is just a dollar or two more than the lunch. However, I can't say I have complaints otherwise.

Personable staff, I was greeted warmly and promptly. I also noticed lots of 'regulars' coming in to dine or pick up food and they were remembered by the staff, casual conversation was struck up if time permitted. The decor is tastefully done, exotic but not overdone. A small dining area so I imagine it can get crowded very quickly. The food was prepared well and served quickly, maybe a bit too quickly as my entree came out 2 minutes after my soup appetizer. I had the Tom Yum soup w/out meat which was good. Although not as spicy as I'd hoped, it was very flavorful and fresh. For my entree I had the Pad Khi Mao w/ squid. Again not as spicy as I like but they offered me extra spice which did the trick. The squid was prepared perfectly, not rubbery like many places serve. Portions are reasonable, I was sated but not overstuffed. In fact, I had room for dessert, coconut ice cream which was a different take than I've had before. It was served in a hollowed coconut shell with frozen and liquid coconut milk inside. Not at all what I was expecting but refreshing and unique. I would definitely come back if the opportunity presents itself.

I did not like the food.. People have put good reviews for the restaurant and it seems to be the top 3 Thai restaurants in the area.. But I can't seem to agree with others. I ordered Veg Smoked Chilli. It was very greasy like some of the chinese restaurants have. I expected it to be stir fried and not so greasy.. Anyways, I will stick to some other thai restaurants in the area..

I used to love Bangkok Wok until I went here. This place has the best curry. You can choose from a choice of meats or tofu for the curry and can add extra veg or fresh basil. I've tried just about everything, it's so close to work so I hit it up alot. Half the time now I just tell her to surprise me. Very reasonable in price, staff is great. Fresh food and herbs, can't beat it!

Bangkok 56 is a great little place! The food is surprisingly fresh tasting and flavorful. We love the fried rice (so good that my son and I had to fight over the last spoonfuls). Also great was the green curry - although it seems a bit thin at first, it packed a nice heat, and it had perfectly cooked vegetables (broccoli, green beans, fresh bamboo, zucchini, etc.). The service was also awesome. We were a bit late for our reservations but the hostess made us feel welcome. When my son requested a noodle soup that was not in the menu, the server/chef tried to accommodate him by adding rice noodles to their wonton soup. We will definitely come back and try more dishes.

I was looking desperately for 3-star Pad Thai, after weeks of 2-star Pad Thai. Had the Chicken Pad Thai. Delicious. Got the fish cakes as an app. They were spicy and flavorful (fried tofu was just that- give it a pass). Other people got tofu pad thai (just as great) and drunken noodles (looked good). They advertise curries as thier specialty, so I'll have to go back to try.

My husband, myself and our 4 small children went to Bangkok 56 tonight for dinner. The place looks like a hole in a wall kind of place with very unaesthetic decor but sometimes those places have the best food. After being sat by a very unfriendly and uninviting woman (who I think might be part owner) we ordered our food. I got the green curry, my husband got the pad thai and my children got fried rice to split. It was great, not exceptional but great. Our children are 7, 3, 2 and (a learning to feed self) 11 month old. The children were quiet, very well behaved and did not get out of there seats or cause any type of scene (with the exception of a spilled water) the entire dinner. After we finished eating my husband took the children, all except the baby to the car while I waited for the check. When the waitress (who I think also might be a owner) came and put the check on the table, then proceeded to yell at me saying "God, look at this rice on the floor, now I'm going to have to get down there and clean it up!" She walked away and I could still hear her yelling about it in the back kitchen. Now, there was hardly any rice, in fact I had already picked some of it up and intended to pick more up before departure. But, should I have to? I clean up after dinner every night! That is why I am paying to go out to eat, so I don't have to cook or clean up! I did finish cleaning up the rice (I'm still not sure why, I think it was because I was shocked) and then went to pay, the mean lady who sat us, for the food. I informed her that I cleaned up the rest of the rice (side note: I wonder if they heard of a broom, does wonders!) but I would never return to their restaurant. To which she replied "thank God" then she proceeded to ask me if this is how I feed them at home. I said "you mean allow them to feed themselves?" She said "yes". No, I spoon feed them all and expect them to never make a mess. I kept thinking is this a dateline special "What would you do?" and Jon Quinones was about to walk out any sec. To the owners: If what your trying to go for is a fine dining establishment, take down the hello kitty and mickey mouse paraphernalia off your walls, then we'll talk. On the other hand, if the thing that really pisses you off in the day is some sweet, little ones spilling a little rice, because they are working hard at getting your food in their mouth, then count yourselves blessed! I don't want to waste another minute of my precious time on you or your stupid restaurant. BTW, we are business owners and would not dare treat a customer like this. Real Downer. Also, if in Lancaster, try Sa La Thai, such good food, they are the nicest and they want to hold our babies and scold us for TRYING to clean rice off the floor. Shame on you Bangkok!

I moved to harrisburg last year and I thought I will be okay with all those family restaurants had to offer but it turns out...not really. So I began to browse through internet hoping to find some good local restaurants; for while I had no luck- . However, after I watched movie "burn after reading" I had this strong urge for thai food; so I looked up specifically for thai food in harrisburg. And I found yelp! I usually don't have faith in these restaurant rating website after I tried some highly rated restaurants(expensive too...) in ZAGAT. But I really liked how there are some consistency in people who are rating these restaurants, they looked real! Bangkok wok was too far from where I live so I went to Bangkok 56. I am a girl who really looks for nice appearances in restaurants; so to be honest, I did not really expect much from bangkok 56 when I just looked at pictures here. However!!! I loved the place:) inside of the restaurant seemed organized and clean. The price was very reasonable and the portion was just right for me! The staff seemed very nice too. Now I know where I am gonna go when my friends visit the town next time!! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- UPDATE 1/17/08 After my first visit, I became fan of this place and went often. However, I don't think I will any more. I went to this place few days ago with my sister. While eating, my sister found little hair in the food, that was absolutely not one of ours. I would have let it go if they at least sincerely apologized. However, they pulled some BS - from saying they can't even see it to trying to convince us it was burnt been sprout... I could not believe that they actually want us to believe that... The hair even had white root attached to it. We didn't wanna deal with them then, so just paid and left. I am sad I lost one of my favorite restaurant but I guess it's time for me to try new thai places...

This place is absolutely amazing. I would recommend to anyone and have when asked where to go for good food. THE BEST thai food I have had anywhere, even NYC thai restaurants. The Panang (C6) is heavenly and so well spiced I couldn't believe it. The pad thai is also a favorite. Service is pretty good especially if you get the owner. Not great place for kids, but a hidden gem that you will be glad you tried.

My boyfriend and I went here for Valentine's day so it was pretty packed and they seemed like they just wanted to get us out of there. So not really sure how service normally is since they were pretty busy. The food came out really quick. As people have already said, the portions are smaller than you might expect. We still went home full, just getting two entrees. We just didn't have any to take home. I didn't really find it pricy. I found it cost as much as an average Thai place. We were a little put off by the outside appearance, but once we went inside we saw that it was a pretty nice, cute restaurant. Overall, I thought this was a great place and plan to go back.

So I'm in Harrisburg for a few days and was really craving Thai, luckily my trusty GPS did not let me down. It led me to this small, unpretentious restaurant. Decorated in traditional thai statues, tourist posters and lots of silk flowers and plants, I just knew I wouldn't be disappointed. Topped with owners that were walking around and making friendly chit chat with the patrons, I knew I was in for a treat. To start I had the Larb Gai, it was delicious, thai spicy, citrusy, and not sweet. I hate when it's sweet. ...mmmm great start! Next I ordered Ki Mao (drunken noodles). Again, delicious, flavorful, chock-full of veggies (carrots, peppers, green onions, snow pea pods, cilantro). The noodles were nice and wide and had a great smokey flavor. Surprisingly, it wasn't as spicy as I would have liked, especially after that kickin' Larb. But not to worry, they brought me a spice tray and I properly spiced it up with the chili paste and their mini chili's in fish sauce/vinegar...mmmm. Most times I don't like those, but it was great here. Finally, being the glutton that I am, I also had dessert. I was sooo hoping for mango and sticky rice, but they had something better! Something I haven't had since my Thai roomate used to cook for me, they had tapioca in coconut milk with nice, big slivers of coconut. I was in HEAVEN. All this for about $21, not bad in my opinion. Then I had to drive to my hotel, I was afraid I'd get pulled over and get a ticket for driving while being near a food coma...thank goodness I made it ok :)

I have eaten here 3-4 times. Food has been consistently good no matter what I tried. You get good portions at a good price. Pad Thai and Drunken Noodles dishes were both good. Try take out, they seem to give even more portions this way. If you like real spicy Thai food, order the 911 Drunken Noodles. You will not be disappointed. It will fire you up for sure. They will always warn you about how spicy that is, but if you can handle real spicy, you will enjoy it. Parking is limited ans you may need to park on the street somewhere. Don't let the outside appearance fool you. Inside is small but adequate. Service is good. This place has the best Thai food in the area. I highly recommend this place. I have tried several Thai places and this is the only one in the Harrisburg area that gets the thumbs up from me. Their food has good flavor and you will have a party going on in your mouth when you taste their food.

Traveling through town and ate here based upon Yelp reviews. Two out of three of the dishes we ordered were really good, the other was just okay (pad thai). Egg rolls were excellent. The only problem for us was that it was soooo darn loud inside. Service could have been a bit more attentive. Other than that, solid.

I've only been here once, so there's not much I can say that's different from other reviewers, but I agree: Good food, good service, fair prices. Nothing fancy, but the food quality was better than what you might expect from the exterior of the place. I had Tom Kha Gai (Coconut-Lemongrass Soup with Chicken) which was really nice and loaded with veggies, and a Green Curry with Tofu... tofu was nicely fried and not soggy, and the curry spicier than expected but pleasantly so. Friends had Pad-Thai-type dishes and Pineapple Shrimp Fried Rice, which they said was "generous" on the shrimp. Portion sizes were good for the price, and everything I had tasted fresh and was not greasy. Their full menu is actually larger than what they show online. Just be aware that this place is fairly small and seating is close together, so be prepared for the volume to be a little loud, especially if a family with kids walks in. Overall, though, a good experience -- compares well to Thai places in larger urban areas -- and I look forward to going back!

Average. Wouldn't miss it a single day wouldn't go there again. The Penang curry was average and the papaya salad even more so but the drunken noodles definitely won the below average award. There are better places to eat in this area stick to those.

By far my favorite Thai restaurant in the Harrisburg area. I can personally attest to the drunken noodles, red curry, and chicken pad Thai. I miss all of the great restaurants in cincinnati, but Bangkok 56 is a pleasant reminder of what delicious Thai food can do for the soul!

I am a visitor to this who was looking for a family dining and this restaurant came up. Went to the place and as power the board we had 25 mins to go for the restaurant to close. We were about to get in through the door and the lady came to the door, turned off the 'open' sign light and did not let us in. That to me was arrogant behavior and they can't close the door without talking to the incoming customer. Bullshit, this deserves a complete downgrade of the rating the restaurant has. So glad I don't have to go to this restaurant again.

Simply the best thai cuisine in the harrisburg camp hill area. Flavors like you have never tasted before and this a coming from a guy who has tried every single restaurant in the area. Do not forget to try the tilapia with red curry and the scrumptious red snapper.

A co-worker and I were craving Thai for lunch today and knowing very little about Harrisburg, PA relied on Yelp to guide us. I'll admit, we pulled up and almost circled the block when we saw the outside of Bangkok 56 Thai Cuisine but Yelp rarely disappoints so we committed to the plan and I'm so glad we did. The food was great and the inside of this place is a lot more welcoming than the exterior. The front door is plastered with Local Reader's Choice Awards and Yelp Achievement Stickers so trust me. The food is good. We started with the Chicken Satay which came with a side of Peanut Sauce, toast point and a fresh cucumber and onion salad. We also ordered the Thai Dumplings but were told they didn't have them today. The Chicken Satay was Very flavorful and not dry like most Chicken cooked on a stick you get in a lot of other Thai places. We both had Pad Thai (mine beef and her's chicken) which to my surprise was a little on the sweet side but very good. Needless to say, we both cleaned our plate. Service was great even through a busy lunch rush and prices were reasonable based on the quality of food received. I guess what I'm trying to say is we walked out feeling great about the food and good about the value.

Okay, I'm still a huge fan of this place because the food is delicious.... BUT ever since the renovations, the portion sizes have become noticeably smaller!!!!! Be warned! My Thai iced tea was maybe half the size it used to be (they used to give it in a cup for shakes, but now with new fancy glassware, it's probably the size of a glass of wine....), and the drunken noodles I ordered was also much smaller. I remember being able to bring home some left overs when I used to come here, but lately, I'd order apps and entree and still have room for a snack later :( The decor is now modern and swanky, but I would rather they didn't redecorate and went back to giving me lots of delicious food at a reasonable price!

They are so very nice and family-friendly, which is why I am giving them a 4 instead of a 3 star rating. I'm also giving a 4 star instead of a 3 because they do have some Thai dishes that other Thai and Asian fusion restaurants don't serve. There is also the fact that Thai food pickings are very slim around Harrisburg, so... My challenge is that their seasonings are WAY off every time I eat there. I had Tofu Taud, and the ground peanut sauce was overloaded with garlic. I had the Pad Woon Sen entree, and it was way over-peppered to the point where my throat was burning (and I LOVE pepper!). The Panang curry sauce was not the combination of sweet, tangy and smooth that I'm used to; and the Pad Thai was particularly bland. Perhaps I've just been there on bad days (about 5). I will still come back, but I'm inclined to take a trip to the big city (New York or Baltimore) for a true Thai food fix.

I'm the happiest girl! We had hoped to find this restaurant the other night but got it wrong. Was craving Bangkok 56! Dan's go-to, pineapple shrimp fried rice, was good. They prepare it with full sized shrimp, pineapple chunks, raisins, cashews and chunky fresh veggies. I've had the drunken noodles and the curry (C7 with tofu). I love both. BYOB. Clean, friendly staff and no long wait.

Totally legit! Not many places in this area with food this good. They have this salad of cilantro and nuts and lime and stuff....sick! You just need to try it out. Try......anything. You'll likely enjoy it. Not the greatest locale or atmosphere, but whatever. Eat here y'all.

As a creature of habit, I go to my usual spots for what I like and Thai food is no exception. Today however, I decided to expand my horizons ever so slightly by trying this place that comes well-recommended. I'm glad I stopped in and tried this little gem of Paxton St. I dined alone on a Sunday afternoon (5:30) for an early meal and was the only person in the restaurant upon arrival. Some people came in and out for take-out orders and by the time my meal arrived there were 3 other tables. I didn't want to pig-out but had to try two of my favorite Thai dishes. Beef Larb and Chicken Masaman. I asked for the Larb medium spicy and it was beyond extra hot. I can handle it so this wasn't such a big deal, but a little less heat would've been ideal. Taste was delicious and portion size was enough for two. The chicken masaman was really good except for the absence of heat. I ordered it medium as well and maybe my taste buds were burned out from the Larb, so maybe that's why I didn't feel it. Again a delicious flavor and an ample portion. Service was adequate though not overly friendly or warm. I recommend this place to go up against any place you currently frequent. Try it and compare.

Got the phucket it was bland and had no taste compared to other thai food I have had. The other people with me said their food was the same. Definatly better thai places around that you can go to this is surly not the best or even close to it. If you want a good thai restraunt i recommend bangkok wok on the Carlisle pike. Which in my experience is 1000 tmes better then here Wish I could rate it 0 stars

Somehow I didn't know this place existed until recently. The food was very good. The seafood hot and sour soup was delicious and they give you a lot of seafood in your soup. I've also tried their pineapple fried rice and that was very good. I like that they give you such heaping portions for such an affordable price. I also learned that they recently remodeled the place. Looks great! Very tasteful decor. I'm now a fan of Thai food.
