Stop here all the time for breakfast. Good food. Service is very quick and the waitresses are alway helpful. Tables are always clean and neat.

Driving south on 81 and stopped at this hometown diner for lunch. Obviously a favorite of the local crowd. The service was a little slow on a Sunday afternoon but the place was packed. The food was very good, typical hearty diner fare. We had the dutchboy, a ruben, a BLT, and the croissant extraordinare. Did not disappoint.

Stopped here on our way through town. Service met a minimal standard the food wasn't very good. I don't recommend eating here.

Stopped for lunch at yelpers' recommendation during an I-81 road trip. A perfect pitstop. Service was attentive and friendly. Kielbasa sandwich was delicious. Side of potato pancakes were crunchy coating and meaty inside. We ordered a side of applesauce for the pancakes which was also very flavorful. Tuna sandwich was very good. Turkey sandwich was a thick slice of home-roasted turkey as promised. Thick cut crinkle chips and birch beer rounded out the experience. What prevents the fifth star was a disappointing crab bisque soup that had no crab and no crab flavor, only potato. But don't let that stop you from coming. This was a really fine meal.

A great lunch stop for a road weary traveler.

This place is wonderful. Maybe I'm biased after living in the south for so long (where they wouldn't know a real diner if it fell from the sky, into their collective lap, and started to wiggle), but I really liked the food and the roadside ambience. This also made life at the EconoLodge tolerable.

Always stop at this restaurant with my family on our way to and from Massachusetts at least once a year. The food is always delicious, and the service is wonderful.

While traveling out to Shenandoah, we stumbled upon this place. It is like time has stood still here. The front of the restaurant feels like an old-school diner while the rear dining room looks country'ish. (think - wood paneling meets stainless steel). We only stopped-in for some cups of soup and coffee so we can't comment much on the food. The service was adequate. I am not much of a diner person anymore (the nostalgia is gone for me) so I probably wouldn't stop here again. None the less, the easy-on-the-wallet pricing and comfort food seems to serve the local community well.

This is my first negative review, and to be honest , well deserved. I read the reviews after I was already disappointed with my meal and service... But the ones that read used to be good , but no longer, and tastes like no flavor nursing home food wwhere quite accurate. I am a fat cry from a chef, but I would rather eat cereal then come back. We used to stop here on our way home from Ashland back to jersey, haven't been in a few years, and won't be back. It's a shame, it's a cute little place, but the staff needs to pay better attention and the chef could use updating . Save your money

It has been a while since I have been here to eat. ANd it will be the last time for sure. Breakfast was disgusting. Coffee was some of the worst I have had, Maxwell house of all things. Eggs were odd colored, and the potatoes were not cooked, and turning black where it was raw. The toast was barely toasted, and the meek little waitress was barely audible when she spoke. Inside is cute and country looking, and that is the only good thing here. Sorry, but there is no way I will return. Having grown up in the area, it is a real disappointment now.

4 stars for breakfast at the Dutch Kitchen Restaurant! Worth going out of your way for! In town for a wedding and Yelp told us we had 2 good breakfast choices. Cracker Barrel and the Dutch Kitchen. I have been at Cracker Barrel before so we went with the new kid on the block(since 1971) the Dutch Kitchen Restaurant. There is a main "diner" area, and another "dinner" area, with more tables and less booths...Every table in the diner area has a jukebox. Not sure if they work or not. We came for breakfast and we were not let down! Creamed chipped beef...YUM! Eggs and waffles both good...they also make their own maple syrup here! Prices are outrageous for a city boy...steak and eggs...8.95...2 eggs, homefries, meat and toast...6.95...basically free breakfast meat compared to the places I normally dine... a la carte... 3 pancakes 4.95 2 Eggs and Toast 2.95 bacon\sausage\scrapple 2.75 Delmonico Steak 5.50 Western Omelette 6.95 Service was OK...I see some reviewers have mentioned it and used the word "surly", which isn't far off the mark...altho our server really didn't crack a smile, she was pleasant and served us well, but she was far from warm. I imagine they are used to their regulars but get quite a bit of irregulars coming thru based on these great Yelp reviews! Do stop by if you are in the area! Well worth a visit!

What a nice place for a GREAT right off the road eating experience. It is almost like stepping back in time. I had chicken pot pie, which came with apple sauce and was like pulled chicken in the dish. The bread ... I had seconds ... Was also notable and even the whipped butter tasted good. My wife had salmon and I tasted it and it was also very good. Our son had a kiddie burger, which was essentially a eegular sized burger. We were all stuffed and had to skip the yummy dessert menu, which includes some unique local ice cream flavors. The service was also super and everyone was very friendly. Needless to say, we have found a new regular stopping spot on I81.

I do not like the food here. I ate here once.. wait time was absurd and quality of food is horrific; gross and bland. I'd rather eat a microwave dinner.

  • Wendy L.

Wait staff was quick. Really like the sliced version of the home fries. Hubby had the chipped beef on toast (always a treat) which he said wasn't overly salty. I had the grilled sticky bun and a yogurt parfait. I personally love diner atmospheres. Given the choice between Perkins and this, I am glad we tried something new

I came here with my girlfriend on a recommendation from a family member. They said they were there a few years ago and that it was an amazing restaurant. Well, things must've changed since it wasn't all that amazing. It took us about 10 minutes to get anyone to give us menus or take our drink orders when the dining room was basically empty. We got chicken strips and a chicken salad. The bread that came with the meal was delicious. Unfortunately everything else tasted like it just came out of the microwave or just not very fresh. Thankfully the place isn't too expensive. I didn't hate my food, but I also didn't love it enough to come back, especially with a not so friendly waitress who was slow, hence the 3 stars.

We stopped in on our trip to Pa.the staff was friendly and helpful.meatloaf dinner was very good and the homemade bread was huge and soft.Waitress was awesome funny and quite the hot dish herself.lol this place has a little of everything and I can't wait to go back.I've been to countless greasy spoons and diners that were OK at best. But this place was surprisingly clean.and our bill for 3 ppl was only $33.00 for dinner. Its def worth a try.

OK, so after having easy access to Amish style food for soooo many years & now living in DC, I tend to get some serious cravings for specific things: trail bologna, apple butter and soft (melt-in-your-mouth) bread with a home-cooked chicken and noodles. (If you've had it, you know what I mean!) While driving north, we discovered the Dutch Kitchen, checked out the reviews and made a pit stop. The good... *Old-school diner atmosphere (on one side, the other seemed to be and actual wood-paneled restaurant.) **A selection of Amish-style foods on the dinner menu, but not quite what I was expecting. Loved my "Chicken Pot Pie", but if I'd not read other Yelpers' reviews I would have never known about the noodles (that I craved) replacing the crust. ***Apple butter, fresh bread, pickled stuff. The not-so-good... *The 1st thing that hits you when we walked in was the smell, like an old musty house. Just plain weird for an eating establishment. **I got the salad bar wanting pickled awesomeness. What I got was McCutcheons. I guess I expected something more regionally relevant, not what we'd just left back in Frederick, MD. bobmccutcheon.com/newmcc… ***Dinginess scale. It was an old place, and geez, did it certainly look it! Overall, the food was good, but never something I would go out of my way for. I guess I'll have to wait until my next trip to Ohio and visit a Der Dutcheman. dhgroup.com/en/home.php

Not a fan. My friend and I were starting the long drive back to MA and saw the sign from the highway and decided to check it out. We should have kept on driving! The place was pretty beat up inside. We didn't even realize there was a dining room and thought it was all the diner section that we were seated in. Broken seats, dingy tables, and just grease in the air. Our waitress was awful. I totally felt like we should leave by how she treated us before taking our order. Thankfully, she went on a break and another woman served us who was slightly less surly. There was a gawd awful annoying conversation going on behind us the entire time we tried to eat. Older people talking about watching grandchildren and how they had to smack them! And... it turned out the loudest and rudest was our waitress. Great personality, lady. The food was mediocre at best. No one even came to refill our water or ask how the food was. I think they only like you if you're a local. Yuck. I wish we had food something better.

We stopped here for breakfast during a road trip. My egg croissant with ham and cheese was tasty. My companion's omelet was decent, but the home fries that came with it were dry and overly browned. Service was minimally adequate, but not very friendly. Dutch Pantry met our needs for breakfast, but I don't think I would go out of my way to come for lunch or dinner.

This place was great. The interior is classic 'American diner' style but with a lot of extra interior space built onto the side to accommodate large crowds. Good food and reasonable prices exist here. But I suppose I would have to try something other than a breakfast to find anything exceptionally "Dutch" on the menu. Seriously folks.. Is this place actually worthy of the title 'Dutch' food? Or is it just another name? ... I am left wondering.

Best Diner ever ? No. Pretty darn good ? Oh yes. My quest to discover and enjoy local eateries during my travels continue, and this was a welcome addition to the list. I had a 'Dutch boy' Sandwich, and DD had the Turkey Club; we both enjoyed our simple yet hearty and well prepared sandwiches, and some excellent French fries. Was able to resist the generously proportioned deserts on display, and took time to enjoy the Diner decor. Definitely a nice stop on a long haul !

Ahhh, a good ol' diner...and it's not worn down at all as others seem to have felt...it ALMOST makes me miss moving from South Jersey. Good food, friendly folks and a jukebox at the table. Good croquets, great pickled stuff and good soups...go for it...got a better option in 10 miles?

How can you pass up a town named "Frackville" ? Yelp didn't steer us wrong! Great lunch, Potato Corn Soup, Salad Bar, Fresh rolls/bread, Reuben....CLEAN diner so cute! Dessert - Banana Cake with frosting - gigantic piece - filled 2 of us-we will find a reason to head up 81 again to have a great lunch here!!!

Me and my family went here for a nice dinner. The atmosphere is very nice inside, and they have their own salad bar in teh dining room with several tables, both large and small, and were easily able to seat our table of 8. They gave us free bread with our meals, and it was good. The soda (Pepsi and Mt. Dew), did not taste like Pepsi or Mt. Dew. I ordered Spaghetti with Sausage, the sauce was a bit watered down and they didn't give you much to begin with. They give you one sausage cut in half, and it was actually pretty damn good. I had to put a lot of salt on my spaghetti though to give it flavor. Everyone else loved their food, however and had nothing bad to say about it, so I guess I was simply the unlucky one. My friend did say the apple sauce was not good, but my mom had the same thing and said the applesauce was delicious. The service was actually really good, so I'm not sure where the bad reviews from service are coming from. It wasn't very loud after the table next to us left (they had a child with them), and overall it was very quiet, nice and relaxing.

The food was spot on. But I have never seen a more miserable group of employees. At least the tshirt has a smiling egg. Turn that frown upside down. Don't let the terrorists win

I've eaten here many times over the years and never been disappointed in any of theirmenu selections. If your traveling on 81 and are hungry this is a good place to pull in to and only a short distance from the highway. They have something for everyone and their pies are delicious. The place is clean and the waitresses are friendly. Its like a diner plus! Enjoy

A real good way to warm up for the massive Amish feeds down south, and maybe better than many of them. Definitely get the salad bar which has lots of Amish-style pickly things and is just $1.50 extra with most meals. Michael Stern of Roadfood.com visited this place and recommends the turkey dinner but that comes with both "filling" (aka stuffing/dressing) and potatoes which sounded just too much so I had the pot pie, really nice big chunks of chicken with nice gravy and veggies but served with noodles instead of a crust. My 9 y/o had the burger which was fine, though he was already filled up before it arrived with the excellent milkshake. There is both an authentic diner and a dining room; no reason not to choose the diner which also has a jukebox at many tables.

Great fresh cooked breakfast. Waitress are always on top of your coffee cup. They even have thin French toast which is wonderful. Would suggest for anyone missing grandma style cooking.

Yummy place to stop if you're in PA! I've been twice and had turkey croquettes both times that were delicious! Also, don't miss their great selection of pies...I had cherry pie a la mode which was out of this world! Others in my group had a turkey sandwich, made with real slices of turkey, and the turkey platter. The mashed potatoes are clearly homemade as all their stuff seems to be. Definitely worth a stop if you're anywhere near Frackville, PA!

Stopped here for a quick lunch during the seemingly never-ending drive through Pennsylvania on I-81. The Dutch Kitchen is right off the highway in Frackville. You'll see plenty of billboards for it as you get nearer. It was fairly empty when we stopped in. The walls are cluttered with tchotchkes and things for sale. It's very country. They serve breakfast all day, which is a plus. I can always go for breakfast foods. I ordered Jack's Choice, which is two eggs, meat, toast, and pancakes, which I upgraded to french toast. I also got a side of homefries because I'm a sucker for potatoes. It was a fairly mediocre breakfast with nothing that really stood out. The french toast was OK, but kind of thin and limp. The syrup was fake and watery. The eggs were OK as was the bacon. They kind of skimped on everything, which was kind of surprising since places like this are usually a good bargain. It was a little disappointing. The lady ordered a turkey sandwich, which came as two pieces of bread with turkey in between. When she asked where the lettuce and tomato was, they told her that she had to request them to get them. Weird. The food and prices here are unimpressive for what you get. But, I will say that it's a better meal on the road than stopping at a McDonald's or something similar.

Driving thru the back roads of PA on our way home to Michigan after a weekend trip to see my Grandson & Daughter & what a surprise a joy to discover in the middle of no where a super diner. With everything i like about diners. classic menu. Great service & pies pies pies for dessert!!!! We started with Bavarian Cabbage soup which was filled with veggies & a piquant tomato base. I followed with a Reuben Sandwich & it was near perfect. Great corned beef, tangy sauerkraut,Swiss Cheese & great Rye bread & just the right size. My wife had turkey potpie Casserole which as filed with all sorts of goodies & very tasty. Last but not least we indulged in coconut Meringue pie 36 hr later I'm, still on the Sugar high

Food was good (regular diner fare with a Pennsylvania Dutch / ethnic Eastern European side. I've eaten here before so knew what to expect. I invited out of town friends who were staying at the Holiday Inn Express for a later dinner. We ate bleenies (deep fried and a bit too overfried for my taste-- dark, hard and beyond crisp) but the perogies were good. I've now had more than my share of fried for the week. Staff was really accommodating. We arrived late and didn't realize they wanted to close around 9 pm. But they didn't say a word. Thanks!

The Famous Dutch Kitchen is a random, chill spot right on 61. Friends and I stopped here for lunch on the way to Penn State one trip. According to their web site, they've been family-owned and operated since 1971. There's convenient parking out front. The juke box at our table didn't work, but we took advantage of their salad bar and had an inexpensive, hearty lunch. Service was mystified by our random group (we looked like the UN), but treated us courteously. Worth a try if you're passing through!

This diner lives up the the true diner experience! Even though this city-dweller was miles from home...I felt welcomed right away. Complete with home cooked PA Dutch specials like the meatloaf and pot pie. I was completely stuffed from the pot pie and my colleague devoured the meatloaf. Too bad between the extensive salad bar and the hearty meals we had little room for all the tempting homemade pies and dessert! Though I managed to shove down a sugar cookie that was even better than mom used to make.

I love diners. I would love to just take a cross-country road trip, stopping at all of the greasy spoons along the way. (I should call Guy Fieri and see if he needs a traveling buddy for "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives"!) I would so rock at that. My quest for the quintessential diner experience doesn't exactly end here. Dutch Kitchen (or "Dutch Oven" as the kid eloquently refers to it) does offer stick-to-your-ribs, homemade food at good prices. Collectively, we just felt they fell short on the overall experience. Husband and I started with the chicken corn soup, which was perfectly seasoned, packed with veggies, chicken and noodles, and just hit the spot. The kid and I both ordered burgers, and D. had the chicken pot pie. Our entrees were good, but aside from the soup, nothing really stood out. As usual, we completely over-ordered by getting dessert, but it was disappointing. My peach pie was burned, and really didn't taste homemade at all, and J.'s milkshake was just OK. I was a little bummed by my long-awaited meal here, so my longing for perfect diner food continues. Guy, give me a call.

Nothing special.Food nothing special.service not great.Potato pancakes greasy and not much flavor.OUT OF shoo fly pie, which wasn't because there weren't a lot of flies buzzing around the dining room.Gross.The coffee was bad. Don't put this on our regular stop itinerary.
