Stopped in this place for lunch today. Service was pretty terrible. The place wasn't busy and it took our waitress at least 5 minutes to greet us even though a lot of the servers were just standing around. We got our drinks and ordered and barely saw the waitress after that. Never refilled drinks either. Food was pretty bland. 2 stars only for atmosphere and beer list. I would never come here again.

Go for the drinks, but don't go for the food. My first time at P.J.'s, and probably my last. The wait staff is VERY young and a bit clueless, but the guys seem to like that kind of thing. : / The craft beer menu is very impressive, and my mixed drink was yummy and not overpriced at all. :) The food was, well... not what I expected from the impression I got when I walked in the door. I ordered a steak, medium rare. I could tell just by looking at it that it was well done, but how well done was not discovered until my first bite. Every bit of moisture seemed to have been cooked out of the slab, that even my 16 year old 'bottomless pit' whom I had pawned the rest onto had a hard time choking down. The veggies were very undercooked (and I prefer crisp tender even) and the potatoes were too fatty and salty. Husband being nice, shared a Buffalo Chicken slider - it was way overcooked too. :( Great for a game - LOADS of TV viewing, and the pillar of beer looks intrigueing, but not insulated - anything I hate more than a leathery steak is a warm beer. Better drink up fast, or share with like 10 people. So, looking for a juicy steak - go across the street to Chilis. Burgers look decent enough to try - but I will stick with Victory for my total game/beer/food fix.

I had a great time at PJ's last week. It's an Eagles bar for sure, and an amazing place to watch a game- wall to wall tvs. My sister and I went about 1/2 an hour before an Eagles game, grabbed beers, and hovered around the bar for a few minutes until some seats opened up at the bar. They have a huge selection of unique beers, and a full bar. Prices are reasonable and the servers were friendly, prompt, and informative. They had great food and app choices- we had the bay fries with dipping sauce, which was a large portion and delicious to share over beers! This place is packed during sports games, so plan ahead. I'd recommend sitting at the high top tables or around the bar. That's where the most fun fans sit, so it's always a good time. Local tv and radio announcers come and do fan interviews. It's a great time and a good place to bring friends or your entire family. I will absolutely be going to PJ's again the next time I'm in the area.

Stopped by to meet a few friends to coordinate the spring volleyball season. What i didn't know was this place has a great selection of beers. We tried some mildly spiced wings that were cooked to order (crispy), and an order of cheese steak nachos. I didn't care too much for the flavorless nachos. The restaurant is spacious with several TVs around the establishment. You can sit anywhere in the restaurant and be able to see at least five different TVs. PJ Whelihan's should try to do something about the acoustics. By the end of our meeting, we were all horse from having to shout to be heard.

The servers are clueless and forget to put in orders. Had 4 beers each and they cut us off. After confronting the manager she quickly changed her mind. Food is pretty good, once you get it.

    (2)
  • Tonya B.

I ordered a pulled pork and a hamburger. My hamburger bun was dripping grease and my pork was all GARLIC. I talked to the manager and they took our fries back too and wanted to charge me for them. Will never be back. It sucked. ALOT...

  • Freddy H.

Beer great, food not so much. Even the bar food isn't that good and most menu items are overpriced. I do enjoy their wings, buffalo dip, and crab dip. Great place for watching a game, but get their early because it always fills up.

    (3)
  • Grover T.

Beer, good. Food, bad. Go to watch a game and when ordering the wings ask for them "naked and crispy".

  • Rob H.

I've been to PJ Whelihan's about 3 times and it's been mostly the same experience every time: the food is good, the service is not. I've had a different server every time, and every time they are hardly ever around and not very quick to bring things when asked for them. They are also not very friendly and sometimes act inconvenienced when you ask for something. I keep going back, though, for the delicious buffalo dip. You must try it if you haven't already. I've also enjoyed the Cheddar Beef 'n Ale, but was not impressed with the cajun chicken salad (way too much lettuce, not much of anything else). Although I haven't been for this reason, it seems like a fun place to watch sports (there's a large bar area and a ton of TVs all over the restaurant and bar) and there seems to always be a fairly large crowd there.

  • TK W.

I know they don't have much good reviews, but for some reason, I enjoy their food. Weird

  • Sherm L.

Let me preface this review by saying I've never actually eaten at PJ Whelihan's. I've seen the menu, though, as well as some food selections while I was there. From what I can tell, PJ's menu seems to offer a wide array of traditional bar favorites (burgers, wings, nachos, etc.) in large portions at fairly reasonable prices. Like I said, I can't fully vouch for the food menu. I can, however, give a thumbs up to both their draft beer selection (20+ taps, lots of micro- and craft brews) and their bartenders, most of whom appear to have been taken directly from the pages of Maxim and planted in the heart of beautiful Downingtown (chuckle). Basically, here's the deal: if you're in D-town and you're looking for a "happening" bar with good beer on tap and hot bartenders, you could do a lot worse than PJ Whelihan's.

    (4)
  • Peter L.

Best wings in town. Meaty, crunchy, good sauce selection. I usually like to get it with the PJ Whelihans draft beer. Good views for sporting events. Service is good and friendly. What more can you ask for?

  • Richard R.

Great place to watch sports! Food is OK. Wings are real good!

    (3)
  • Veronica K.

Husband and I went and weren't sure what to expect, the food was good, we enjoyed everything we got, we were happy with the service and prices were fair. We'll definitely be going again!

  • Party G.

Never did go to the previous restaurant in this space, so PJs was a welcome change. Beer selection is good, but they have 86'd a few beers I latched onto with no idea if they'll ever come back on draft. Love the famous fries with dipping cheese. Wings are frustrating. I want to like them, but the last 6 or so wings in each batch are a real downer. I think it's the light breading. Waitresses have been unwilling to take drummie-only orders. Kids meals were a bit pricey vs other local fare. Many TVs and a couple of huge projectors. New updated outside porch area - have not been there but have seen the ongoing construction. Will go again, but not first choice.

    (2)
  • Mark C.

Probably a good place to hang out with friends, watch the game, or grab a quick bite to eat. But if you are looking for good food my advice is to go somewhere else. We were not impressed.

  • Xtine H.

I have gone to a few happy hours at the PJ's in Blue Bell, so when I saw it was taking over the (huge) space that used to be an (empty) Italian restaurant I know I would be stopping by. Funny how after this place being an empty dining establishment for years, the place was crazy packed. The baked onion soup was pretty good, the Cajun chicken sandwich nicely spiced. My dining companion ordered the ahi tuna steak, and I panicked when the waitress asked "how do you want that done?" but thankfully the dish was perfect (well, except more of the peppery flavor would have been well received). A pretty good beer list, surprisingly, and some fun mixed drinks thrown in the mix makes it a nice place to stop by.

    (3)
  • Brian M.

Good beer selection, average food, and deafeningly loud! That pretty sums up P.J. Whelihan's.

    (3)
  • Alex H.

Atmosphere is great. Lively, open and tons of huge tvs. Beer selection is phenomenal. Food is mediocre. BBQ chicken was exactly what I used to get in high school cafeteria, 'mixed vegetables' were 2/3 onions, desert was Betty Crockers finest. The bar is pretty high considering the outstanding food at other local brew pubs like drafting room, station taproom, and even mckenzies. Service was poor. Salad came after the meal, they kept delivering items we didn't order, waitress kept disappearing except to push more beers. Overall, a great place for happy hour or the first half of a big game . . . Just don't stay for dinner.

    (3)
  • Susan L.

The bar itself is nice... very big, lots of room at the bar itself, tables, outside area, etc. a good place to hang out, great for sports. service-- not great. I almost always end up waiting. Its really weak when bartenders don't even make eye contact when they walk by over and over. I have also gotten wrong and/or cold food more than once. food- Ive only tried pretzels and hummus, both of which are mediocre. it is what it is!

    (2)
  • Brigit B.

PJ's is always a solid place to watch sports. Most of my visits have been for the bar service with the occasional appetizer order. Service on the food tends to be extremely slow and quite frequently my order is incorrect. This last visit we ordered hummus with veggies and the pretzel bites. The hummus was okay but the veggies weren't the greatest. The cucumber slices were inedible and they were almost see through and completely wilted. The order of pretzel nuggets came out mostly frozen. It took over 20 minutes for the server to bring out new nuggets. I realize PJ's isn't a fine dining establishment but their standard of food quality seems to dissipate continuously. Additionally does their free WIFI work? EVER?

  • Andrew C.

The beer selection in this place is great. There are many craft beer choices on tap which makes this a great option if you're going out for a few drinks to watch the game. There are tons of TVs all over the place which make viewing the game easy and enjoyable. This is the quintessential "sports bar" atmosphere. The food, however, is a different story. The menu offers a very basic bar food variety: burgers, wings, fried foods... you get the point. This place is desperately trying to knock off Chickies and Pete's (even down to the sub-par "house fries")... Very rarely have I gone here and can actually say that I liked the food. Not only the type of food offered, but the quality of the food is just lacking in my opinion. It's a shame the food wasn't better because if it was, I would come here more often. Conclusion: Come for beers and maybe an appetizer if you want to watch a game. If you're looking for something more than that (say a good meal), there are many better options in the Downingtown/Exton area. ****4 Stars for Beer**** **2.5 Stars for Food**

  • M.j. M.

They have a pretty large beer selection, for pretty decent prices. Service was fast and friendly as well. The Ghost Pepper sauce is nothing to scoff at either!

    (4)
  • Graham M.

Pretty cool place to have drinks and food. There's t.v.'s everywhere so if a games on you won't miss a play. I also used to work here and it was a really fun place to work. A lot of good, friendly people. The owners are good people.

    (5)
  • Zoe O.

Food is decent, not very good with big parties. I also didn't appreciate the waitresses wearing booty shorts. Literally there were 2 of them with their Butt cheeks hanging out. Besides that I recommend the famous fries and loaded tater tots.

    (3)
  • Lauren B.

I love bar food so I can't go wrong here! The prices are good and there are different beer/drink specials during the week. There is a wide selection of draft and bottled beers. The service has always been good even on a busy Saturday night. The wait for a table on Friday's and Saturday's may be long. PJ's has a nice outdoor section with a bar that seems to be open year round.

    (5)
  • Eric W.

I've had very good experiences here at this PJ's. Great beer selection, they really live up to the reputation on wings and really good pub grub. Even had a really good bowl of soup last time(crab bisque). All in all, being new, with a relatively young staff, I was impressed.

    (4)
  • Lucille D.

The food is awful....ice cold greasy fries....soggy bread....steak in the salad is chewy, to say the least..the waitress randomly substitutes what she thinks you want....bacon is fatty and full of grease..Mac and cheese is Kraft...it is disgusting..this was my second time there and now I remember why I didn't want to go back...

Took our family here on a Sunday afternoon. We loved the food- really delicious. The waitress was very attentive and the food was out much faster than we anticipated. All top-notch marks for food and service. I would have been happy to award a 5-star rating to this restaurant if it hadn't been for the inappropriate artwork on the wall above our table. I didn't mind the rock-star theme, but a huge picture of Madonna and Britney Spears kissing? I didn't want to look at that, and I really didn't want my children to stare at it. I expected that this was a place where our family could eat and enjoy the atmosphere without having to worry about what the kids were going to see. It was a shame to be hit by something like that when there are SO many appropriate options that would fit the decor. We won't be back.

So I went here last night for hour hour and it was actually not as bad as everyone makes it out to be . My friend and I sat down and we had a very friendly bartender say she will be right with us and promptly came over to us after she was finished making her drink.. They had a great beer selection and even noticed they had their own beer! We both got soup, myself the chili and it was very good. Also we ordered the cheesesteak nachos and those I mean they speak for themselves, yummy!! Overall it wasn't very crowded so I did enjoy having happy hour there. Will be back for more happy hours in the future.

  • Kevin D.

The service was very attentive and the Beer selection is pretty ridiculous for a chain. Just wish there wasn't a party reserved outside because it was an AMAZING day outside, but hey, such is life. As a craft beer afficiando, I'd definitely recommend it and give it another shot,

    (4)
  • Matthew B.

Good Wings. OUTSTANDING beer selection - 48 beers on draft, all styles. Yea, the staff are easy on the eyes. A million TV's - this is a sports bar. Great place to watch a game, suck on wings, and endulge your (ahem) beer fantasies...

I had the wicked chicken cheesesteak. The bun(only 8 inches), the sauce, and the meat all dry and bland. The meat didn't even fill the entire bun. I also do not think there was much if any cheese on it. I could have enjoyed a box of steak um at home instead. $8.99 for that... I feel like a fool. The service was satisfactory though.

Whelihan's is known for their wings and they didn't disappoint. We ordered the plate of 10 wings with original hot sauce. While not overly hot they did have some heat to them. I was able to cool off the heat with one of their large selections of beer - Troegs Mad Elf. The only negative thing I can find with PJ's is the size of their bathroom. One stall and one urinal?? Seriously this place is huge and to only have two sets of bathrooms at each side of the bar with only one stall and one urinal in each is in my opinion poor planning. I plan to go back as often as possible to try the other micro-brews.

standard sports bar done well, good beer selection, and attractive females (if thats your thing)

  • Adam A.

Terrible food. If you're going to watch the game on the big screen and get a beer then it's a good place to go. If you're going to have dinner, the food is terrible. It's also pure exploitation of women. Seeing as the only people serving tables are women in extremely inappropriate clothing, never any men. The only two men I ever saw working there at the front is the two male managers up front standing and watching their own employees as they walk by in skimpy outfits. Embaressing.

Food is ok , solid place to watch sports .. Beer and location is the only reason to rate a 3 food is more like a 2

  • GoBlue G.

My teenage boys always enjoy our trips to Whelihan's. The attractive service staff always serve with a smile. The wings are a big hit and just big. I like the hot honey bbq and sesame garlic. Sandwiches have always been delivered hot and flavorful. For me the craft beer selection is vey good, with many styles to choose from, on the last trip I had a Berliner Weisse, traditional sour beer from Berlin with a crispness that you must have a taste for. This one ( I can't remember the brewery ) was pale in color yet refreshing. I wish we had one in Wilmington, DE

I've had the opportunity to come here for a couple of office related events. I wasn't sure going in what I would think. PJ's strikes me as toeing the chain restaurant line. Kind of like the route Chickie's and Pete's is currently ruining their reputation with in my mind. When it comes to local based chains, I am of the opinion that once you get to more than three locations, you run the risk of being watered down. Overall quality control begins to suffer. Ingredients become less freshly made and more corporately made by cutting corners. But I'll be generous. PJ's may be spreading themselves thin with locations, but they have some good things going for them. Beer selection is definitely one of them. If you can please a true beer snob, then you're not too corporate yet in my mind. For me, their wings won me over. I did enjoy the opportunity to try them with various flavors of sauce. I was polishing them off with a group of people and thinking of getting more just for me. I will say that this place is definitely good for the beer and wings trip to watch a game. That's their wheelhouse. I did also try their grilled cheese. It needed more cheese. Bread to cheese ratio was a little off. Someone call their corporate office and tell them to relax the cheese restrictions, will you?

    1) we went there for wings because we heard they were the wings used at Wing Bowl 2) we are seriuos eaters ( foodies /sports nuts) between 4 people we order about $100 in wings that was not for alcohal . 3) First the wings come out dry lol, so we tell our waitress and she brings out a few cups of hot sause lol ----great fried chicken , light sauce , himmmm KFC would have been better . 4)We respectfully complained and the manager came out and told us the cook was new , ok great do we get a new cook discount ? We look at the table behind us , same deal a problem with the wings plus a super long wiat for food. We were give desert coupons, ummm thanks but no thanks I like to pay and tip for good food not something we were not interested in . Overall slow servace , poor wings I mean bad , and not worth the night out vs other sports establishments that sell wings and bar food . Funny thing is the bar is super packed , if they had there act together from the top down they could probably increase business by as much as 40% , less excuses more action ,get some good food , get some organizationl manaement skills and dont open until you have both in place . Final note if you must enter ---watch the TV enjoy the beer and dont you dare eat the food .

Ya know, I wanted to give this place (3) stars, but it doesn't usually disappoint - especially when you go in expecting a sport bar atmosphere. The beer is plentiful, cheap, and quickly served. They have pretty good drink specials, and it is nice in the summer to get a couple blue moons on a deal and hang out on the patio. Food is pretty OK - though the wings are good, and probably the best in the D-town area. They have a good variety of sauces and I typically only go to the place for wings and beers with people after work or before going to Philadelphia. Prices are pretty good and the wait staff is generally responsive. I can't speak to anything other than the wings. I actually have a friend who is a big wing and beer guy - not a little person - and before he moved to Colorado, PJ's was one of the places he wanted to stop because he enjoys hanging out there so much.

I stopped here for lunch on May 21, 2015 and I ordered a chicken breast sandwich. The chicken breast must have been, at most, 1/8 inch thick. The lettuce and tomato were also being rationed. It looked like they were filleting chicken breasts into thirds. They were also rationing the alcohol in the mixed drinks, if they put in any at all. Today, May 25, 2015, I went to the Blue Dog Tavern in Chalfont, PA for dinner and the chicken breast in my sandwich was huge. The PJ Whelihans restaurant in Downingtown is on my avoid list. It seems to be shorting customers on food and alcohol. This chain needs to contact Mystery Diners.

Their wings were barely coated in the sauce and the blue cheese was warm - big no-no. The loaded tots portion was rather small we counted 9 tots in total and barely covered in cheese and bacon. Cheesesteak egg rolls were ok but only got 3 for $9 price tag! The kitchen is lacking in quality control and overall presentation. They must assume people are getting buzzed on beers and not caring about the food temperature, portion size and price they are paying. Also the waitress was rather inconsistent in attention we had drinks not refilled so they lost $ and extra napkins not provided.

  • J R.

A nice sports bar in Downingtown! A good place to hang out to watch sports with your buddies or family. Love their variety of buffalo wings sauce. Wings came out crispy and not overcooked. Plenty of beers to choose from. They offer beer specials and changes often. Expect pub style food. I've tried several sandwiches and burgers and they were good. It's also a hit or miss on quality. Once in a while, they are really good. Sometimes, bad. The service is often fast and friendly. The overall experience worked for me. I expected to have a good time here and the place is known for that.

I love this place. However the main reasons I go frequently are Tara and jt. They are the absolute best!!! They are very attentive and quick to serve you another drink. They are always friendly and there to make you laugh even if they are having a busy night! Customer service is their strong quality!!

  • Danielle B.

Great beer selection! However the bartender was rude and served us the wrong beer, when we told him he was rude about it. We later got a table and barely saw the waitress all night. We were left needing more drinks and waiting 20 minutes after ordering one. We ordered food and one member of our group was served 10 minutes before everyone. The wings sauce is not hot at all. They served the soup at the end of the meal. Would not recommend due to poor food timing, and rude bartenders

The beer selection is decent but the food is an ocean of mediocrity, do not go for the food!

  • Andres L.

Time to cross this place off the list. Came here for a late dinner munch and was unimpressed by just about everything. First and foremost it is extremely loud in there. You have the music blaring like its a club, then the people screaming to each other just to hold a conversation. It seems inappropriate to yell at my waitress. Food: Chicken parm entree, 'wicked chicken' and portabella sandwich. We all regret ordering food. From a restaurant. I've also had their wings (and from the blue bell location) and they're average. Beer selection looked decent. Lots of tvs.

  • Johnny V.

If you like busy loud and crowded than this is a good place to go prices are a little higher than normal and the food is okay they were very good beer selection though

    (3)
  • Stephen Z.

Fun for drinks but food is fairly random bar food although the service tends to be very personable. They tend to close the kitchen early (which is irresponsible) so get there early or eat before you get there if it's late. Also have noticed a pattern of "over serving" guests who have visibly already had too much. Some people seem to leave trashed and barely able to walk out the door let alone get in a car.

I don't feel like getting drunk during a football game, so that's why I stay away from PJs. The staff is friendly, but the other clientele, not so much. most of them were not very well-behaved, and made my entire experience uncomfortable. And I am saying this as a 31-year-old single male, so you can understand how bad would have to be for me to be sO disenchanted by the restaurant. The food was good, and there were plenty of TVs, so I have no complaints there. My only complaint are for the other customers, not for the staff or the restaurant.

    (1)
  • Andy C.

Food was terrible, staff was terrible. If you wanna watch tv and drink beer they're okay I guess , But even the beer selection is pretty lackluster

    (1)
  • Dr Z.

The good: Wings an burgers are pretty good. Great beer selection. Some of the staff are pretty cute. The bad: Sometimes the waitresses disappear. They need to have more microbrew specials. If you have Verizon and want to be on your phone good luck. Reception is terrible and the wireless NEVER works here. Why don't bars know that working wireless is important in 2013?

  • Stephanie T.

We went to PJ's today to watch some college football while enjoying a few beers and some snacks. I would go back to this place for a beer...but that's about it. At first the football was great - they have TV's everywhere. They had the audio on for the PSU game - but turned on some crappy pop/club music around 5p. I asked the server if they could switch the audio back to the game and she said sure...but never followed through. Food was less than mediocre - I wasn't expecting much but they even botched simple bar food. If you can, avoid this place - unless you are just grabbing a drink!

  • Bill P.

In my opinion PJ's has the best wings around. It's also the best place to watch your favorite team. I always take my little nephew to PJ's whenever he's in town from Michigan. I'm a huge fan of their Chipotle Lime sauce and famous fries. They have a great selection of beers on tap and its a great place to watch a game. I've never eaten their burgers or other sandwiches so I cant really comment on those. However, my wife loves their salads. If you're looking for a great place to get some wings and watch some games while drinking ice cold beer, this is the place for you. Its a great place to bring kids because there is a lot going on and its pretty loud so you do not have to worry about your little ones disturbing others having their meal.

  • Magali T.

This place is awful, we ordered nachos and it was basically a pile of corn chips. When we said something to the waitress, she brought us melted american cheese to make up for the absence of cheese on the nachos... The food is just terrible here!!
