Beautiful place with an excellent chef. Awesome clams, delicious salmon and really good fries. Service was friendly. Perfect stop for our long day on the bike.

My husband and I stopped over here a few weeks ago and sat outside. Its a nice outdoor seating area that sort of isolates you away from the traffic nearby. We both ordered burgers. The flavor of the burgers was spot on and the homemade chips were incredible. My burger was cooked correctly but my husband's burger was ordered rare and came out medium- medium well. He was hungry so he ate it anyway. For dessert we ordered the chocolate souffle. I was really excited about this as its one of my favorite desserts but also hard to find around here. I was very disappointed to find that my souffle was in fact a lava cake. They are not even close to the same thing. It was still good but its still not what they advertised as having. We would still come back here regardless of these issues.

On the way out of PA we stopped at the Black Horse restaurant. It's a cute tavern style restaurant with indoor & outdoor seating. We split the smokey burger, it was nicely cooked with bacon, bbq sauce, caramelized onions and cheddar cheese. The burgers are a nice size not too large but very filling; the burgers say they are served on kaiser rolls but our roll was more like a delicious yeast roll. That was a pleasant surprise since I think a kaiser roll is too much bread for a burger. We also had the zucchini swirls with goat cheese, they're very good but tiny, you get 4 in a serving but it should be more like 6-8 given the size. We also had the corn and mushroom risotto, it was a good dish but it was not made with risotto rice so it's more like regular rice with a very good gravy. We wanted to try dessert but the kitchen was VERY slow and we had already spent a considerable amount of time at the establishment and we feared ordering something else would have taken a long time. All in all I'd done here again if I was I the area

After two years of solid food and service, but after recent changes, the place is extremely disappointing. The food quality has declined significantly (not sure if new chef or???) but the service, friendliness and overall vibe have declined rapidly adn is across the board. The manager (Jen?) doesn't appear strong or professional enough to manage the team and the bartenders seem to take pride in being slow, disinterested and aloof. Disappointing, and hopefully on the road to improvement.

Fantastic and reasonably priced. Went from nearly running out of gas to eating the most delicious food in a hot minute. Good luck. Eat here.

Wow, what a nice find in a "less than Urban" area. Apps. and Salads where excellent, portions just right for one so don't plan to share but the entrees are very large so be advised not to fill-up too soon. One cautionary word on the warm beet and goat cheese salad (versions of which I've had often) - the green salad and house made dressing were astonishingly good; crisp, citrus, sharp and light but the beets and goat cheese that were served on the side in a cutesy little cast iron skillet were poor. The beets ,which I assumed would be roasted were not, were too soft and very "wet"and bland, the goat cheese was very melted but not browned and overpowered any earthly beet flavor. However the steak with caramelized onion my wife had and the rubbed, smoked, pork tenderloin i had were both exceptional, the pork especially unique. The wine list is very good and reasonably priced. All in All a very good meal in pleasant, friendly surroundings.

This place was a wonderful surprise my husband and I came across while traveling through town. The food and service was great! I'm a "clean" eater and I was really impressed with their vegetarian menu.

Hubby took me here for V day...although we didn't get to explore the full menu(which I really was excited about since they have a full vegetarian menu) but the options was still really good. The atmosphere of this place is really cozy, dim lighting..I can't speak for normal nights but the tables was spaced out just perfect so you feel a little bit of privacy...sort of..lol. Would recommend this place

A very nice surprise! We stopped for dinner after a day of shopping the local antique stores. We started with the pork and chips, which came highly recommended from our knowledgeable waiter. It did not disappoint. The generous serving of pork came with freshly made tortilla chips. For dinner I had the flat iron steak and my husband had the pork loin. Both entrees were cooked perfectly. We shared the soufflé for dessert which was a sweet ending to a solid meal.

Never disappoints. With a full bar, local seasonal beer and a dedicated vegetarian menu and rather amazing meat options what's not to love? I prefer the veg dishes ... The salad on naan, seasonal specials, risotto and soups are always delicious. Dessert are show stopping.

Great food, never had anything that I wasn't pleased with. Service is pleasant and attentive. Only suggestion would be to update the bar area as it is a bit shabby compared to the rest of the place. My favorites: the duck confit and any of the desserts.

Terrible experience! Bad bad bad service. No idea what the food tastes like. Waited 20 minutes for someone to even notice we were outside. Will never waiste our time again.

I had pleasure to dine here in the bar area which had two other table being used at the time, not really busy.the waitress/bartender took order and seemed to have other things on her mind as she forgot items I had ordered,(she seems to talk to other workers about her personal life)anyways the mushroom soup was the best I've ever had,the rest of the meal was quite satisfactory,if the waitress would have been a little more professional I would have been able to eat it hot.i was never asked if I wanted dessert so don't know if they even have dessert.Might be a good idea to go to dining area.

Just past Stoudt's, the Black Horse has a veg menu which they offer as they seat you, a delightful surprise. "Would you like to see the vegetarian menu?" is not something you hear often in these parts. It has a bit of an ominous name, the "Vegetarian & Restricted Diet Menu" but I guess this is better than "Menu for High Maintenance Pains Who Should Just Stick With Vegetarian Places." :-) On it, there are 2 vegan salads, a vegan soup, and 5 vegan sides. Missing are the entrees, but it's a good start. Glutenfree and Lacto/Ovo are also noted. This place also has a seriously great beer selection, a fantastic bartender, and a cozy setting. My friend loved her asparagus fries, something different.

Love this place!!!! We are in the Adamstown PA area quite a bit as we are antique dealers, buying and selling. My husband had a salumeria (italian food store)/catering business in NYC, so we know our food. This restaurant is a step above the rest.. Food is superb, atmosphere is nice, quaint, romantic and service is outstanding. We always walk away happy and full .. We are looking for a quick get-away for the Valentine's day 2015 weekend and can'wait to go there. Hope we can get a reservation. Often times in the Summer, we stay at the Lodge as well, also nice....

Well done and strong work. Loved this find while driving cross country. Recommend to anyone. Great food and there are items on the menu to meet most budgets. Plates seem to range from $10-$30, so something for all wallets.

A great experience! We held our son's wedding rehearsal dinner at the Black Horse in November. Tara the manager helped us prepare a special menu (3 main choices from which guests could choose) for the event. The food was exceptional, the beverages available were great. (fine beer and drink list) I was amazed how well the restaurant handled our group and still served their regular diners. Restaurant staff were very helpful- we had a great time. All our guests were happy, happy! We definitely recommend this fine restaurant for everyday dining and for special events.

As Innkeepers, we are constantly looking for reliablely good restaurants to recommend to our guests. Although a little further than we normally send visitors, The Black Horse will be going on our "must go back again list." Drinks were good, beer sampler was fun with a good mix of choices. Cheese plate might seem pricey for the size, however, the Humbolt Fog from California and the Moody Blue are very unique cheeses of the best quality! Second appitizer ordered was the rissoto goat cheese fritters. Made perfectly, we felt it could have had a bit more goat cheese flavor. Onion soup was also unique; not too salty not overly spiced like many. Very satisfying. Salads were large, fresh and delicious. Large size made a nicely filling light entre. Meatloaf was ordered, passed around and got mixed reviews. That being said, everyone has their own idea of what meatloaf should taste like! What made the night for me was that fact that I could "build a burger," with sixteen options to choose from. Mine was goat cheese, balsamic roasted mushrooms, and carmalized onion. Asked for medium rare; got medium rare. YUM is all I can say! As good as the food was, the service both at the front desk and the wait staff was friendly and helpful.

The head chef must have been off duty the night we were there. We should have had an indication as to what was to follow when they served stale rolls to begin the meal. My wife and her friend had the pan seared crab cakes. They were not even warm in the center and had little crab meat relative to the filling. The asparagus tempura served with them was good. I had the house smoked grilled pork tenderloin. The pork was OK but had little flavor. The red cabbage slaw was not as good as I have gotten out of a jar. The potatoes were not very hot and had little flavor. The skewered vegetables were very good. Fortunately, the classic creme brulee was excellent. Don't let the pretentious menu fool you, this is at best a mediocre restaurant.

Found this place on Yelp while driving out the Turnpike. SO glad we picked it! Very friendly staff, relaxing music, dim lighting. I had the filet and it was very good. My Mom had wild mushroom ad asparagus risotto. My uncle had muscles and linguine. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Good wine and beer selection. I wish I had room for dessert. Would definitely come back.

The restaurant has an exceptional menu, even one that has nothing but vegetarian options for those with dietary restrictions. The group I went with ordered a variety of things that were either good or standard. Appetizers - standard, eh. The biggest disappointment was that muscles in white wine and garlic sauce, basic. The entrees where standard, my duck was pretty good but could use better seasoning. The dessert was phenomenal! Get the risotto pudding and homemade donuts...must haves. My suggestion is to skip appetizers and go directly to the main course with dessert at the finale!

The Black Horse served as this year's Father's Day dinner selection. I don't know that we would have discovered it, except that it fell at the mid-way point between us and my parents. The decor and atmosphere were OK, but the food was very good. I had the flat iron steak and fries. The steak was cooked perfectly, and the bleu cheese and spinach on top was excellent. The rest of the group all enjoyed their meals also. The Black Horse also boasts an impressive beer selection, which is a must if you want to get more than 3 stars from me. They had 6 or seven assorted beers on tap, with plenty more in bottles. There's not much to see in Denver, PA (at least not that I noticed), but if your travels take you there, the Black Horse is a great spot for dinner.

We travel to this area often and the trip would not be complete without a dinner here. The dishes are always fresh and cooked to perfection. Everyone makes you feel special and never rushed. Remember to save room for dessert as it is equally amazing.

Very good and we will go back! We stayed next door and we away for the weekend antiquing, looking for a nearby restaurant. Some of the reviews thought this place was pricey. Compared to NJ, this was very reasonable. We had tasty meals, nice atmosphere, good service and we will be back next time we are in the area!

A group of us ate here over the weekend and the food was phenomenal! I ordered the Parsley & Horseradish Crusted Salmon with Asparagus Tempura, Beets, Shaved Fennel & Red Onion, Whole Grain Mustard Sauce. AMAZING. The salmon was cooked superbly and the Beets & Fennel were perfectly al dente. We will definitely be returning.

An all-around amazing experience. The food was outstanding, from the appetizer (cheese plate) to the entrees (I had the Cod, the Mr. had the chicken macaroni and cheese). The beer flight was also a real treat - I have a new favorite dark craft beer (St. Boniface Hegemony Imperial Stout). We're only here for a few days, but we plan on making a return trip - it was that memorable!
