My wife and I had eaten a few times here several years ago. We recently enjoyed a returned trip with my brother and his lovely wife. This was on 11/13/10 and it was the first night for the open bar. The restaurant is no longer BYOB, which is a shame. Three of us had the soup of the day which was a delicious white bean and kale soup. My brother ordered the Lutiano Rosso alla Livornese (Red Snapper) and he loved it. He said the capers were a nice touch. My wife and sister-in-law ordered the Melanzane al Forno (Eggplant) and they both loved it. The portion was huge and my wife said she should have not eaten some of it because she was too full. But, she also said she ate it because it was so good. I had the Cotechino (Sausage). I thought the sausage and lentils were excellent. It comes with a small cup of what they call Mustard Fruits. It is fruit marinaded in ?? with a slight hint of mustard. It is quite weird. I would have preferred a small side of whole grain mustard for dipping. As a side, I also ordered the Sformato di Carote, a sort of carrot flan that is absolutely delicious. It is more like a dessert but it went well with the meal. The atmosphere is nice but something is missing. The restaurant is beautiful and the surround houses are nice. I'm not sure what it is but there is a disconnect inside. I think it might be the bright red paint in the bar area. Our server was very green when it came to the proper serving of wine and beer but I'm sure the staff will get better with a little more training and practice. I will say that they should have had their staff trained prior to opening the bar and I hope that doesn't hurt them. There is ample parking at the garage across the street. The prices are VERY reasonable when compared to the quality.

My wife and I ate at Piatto last night. We had not been there for a while, and only a few times since the change to a more informal format. The pluses: great table with a view of the outdoor area, a liquor license in a town with few of them. The negatives: indifferent and impersonal service, charging for bread (!), paper napkins, over priced entrees, weird cramped bar. Piatto is nothing special anymore, but the competition in downtown Carlisle is nonexistent.

This restaurant is the nicest one in the Lizzle, no question. It's small, but it's a hidden gem. When I was in law school, every now and then I would treat myself and grab take-out here. And I would take visitors here anytime someone came to town. The Piatto salad is probably one of my fav salads of all time. From the wine-poached pear to the pancetta vinaigrette, I would eat this a pound at a time if I could. Sooooooo good. The house salad with its balsamic marinated tomatoes is also delicious. The crab fritters with the red pepper sauce are probably my fav regular appetizer, and are sweet and very light for fritters. It's almost as if the dough is yeasted. The only thing I ever ordered as an entree was the lobster ravioli. It's tossed in butter and sea salt, and then sauced with marinara and crab meat. The crab meat is sweet, the ravioli filling is delicious, and the butter and sea salt add a ton of dimension. A classmate of mine once told me he worked here and that they use frozen prepared pasta. That's kind of a bummer, but the end result is delicious. Another plus is that it's BYOB (which is a theme in this town). If you're looking for a romantic/fancy dinner in town, walk right past California Cafe and into Piatto. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Piatto's has a new cheaper menu to reflect the times, and a liquor license is coming soon. I had the chicken pate which was delicious but needed a bigger piece of crostini to sit on. I was going to have the pork loin, but it was thinly sliced and I prefer thicker, so I chose Fritto Misto. Everything was fried nicely in a batter, but everything started to taste the same, I think this would be better if a trio of sea food, fritto, baked and steamed. There is a variety of pizzas offered but friends had pre-warned me that there was nothing special about them. I will wait until they hopefully get a wood burning oven.

this was a great stopover on our drive to indianapolis. a glass or three of wine after getting outta philly rush hour was welcomed. darling ambiance - loved the old windows. really excruciatingly friendly service. entertaining old people as table neighbors who ordered proper old folk cocktails which i need to learn about sometime in the next 10 years. quattro formaggio pizza - a lil oily for my taste, but we really did appreciate the rare multi-cheese pizza that includes sauce. eggplant parm - decent; mine's better. :) salad: should have been served on a giant white plate, not a shoney's-style clear mini-plate with floral designs and scalloped edges. you know the plate. i know i'm being picky there - but when the ambiance is so nice, a tiny cheap plate overflowing with salad stands out. last, paying for bread is tacky. wanna charge for bread? pre-butter it, add garlic, and call it garlic bread. that's fine. i'd rather you make up for that $2 in the average entree prices, and let me have my free bread. i get annoyed when traveling to other countries and having to pay for water - but this is 'MERKA.

I think this place has potential. I'm giving it four stars simply because of that. I would be very interested in visiting again, and being seated outside with the ambience and the glass of wine. As it stands, I was here for a work dinner which catered to around 10 guests. Unfortunately, I had a big meeting the next morning and our service was really on the slow side. The hostess, the waitress, everything about the place was nice and decent including the wine. But unfortunately, we had almost gone through all of our wine before our food even came. And this is where I feel little let down. I haven't had a red snapper in years and was really excited for it. When it came it had some type of sauce on it which I and my companions quickly decided did not need to be on the fish. It was so much better without the sauce. I'm not sure what the triangle was that came with, though I think it could have been some type of polenta. The real letdown for me here was the vegetable side. Almost all of them were cold, not even room temperature but really cold. And as a recent reviewer mentioned, the potatoes were not really cooked. My colleagues all enjoyed salmon, and I feel that the portion sizes on that for a little small though my fish was great. I will comment however that I did have a house salad which came with greens, tomatoes, and a balsamic vinegar. While I enjoyed it and felt it was not too strong as a previous reviewer commented, I don't think that I would pay six dollars for it again. A bright spot, was the calamari and their sauce. We also enjoyed the caprese salad, and what appeared to be a melon and prosciutto dish, so the apps were great. But their bread should be free. Really. $50 bottles of wine require not paying $2 a loaf for bread. Overall, this place has potential. But I just wish the entree was better and faster.

Food was good, not great. Service was poor. Nice place other then that.

Really nice wine selection and surprising full liquor license with interesting martinis. I love the option of having a place with a full liquor license that isn't a bar to stop after work for a quick glass of wine and a light snack. We had the cheese and salami short plates and both were very very good. Both made our bellies happy! The bartender was very very knowledgeable and personable as well. Great rediscovery for a Thursday!

Chose this because of proximity to hotel and couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised. Excellent menu, preparation, and service by Jessica was a dream.

Phone mobile review Great food. Correct portions. Wait staff was fantastic. We will return.

Tiny portions. Very pricey for the Lilliputian serving of pasta. Had to force my salad down, the vinegar was that strong and abundant. My son's soda was served in a tiny wine glass. Waitress disappeared for long stretches even though the restaurant was empty and you could hear her having a good time chatting somewhere. They could not produce Penne alla Vodka for us, which Yelp reviews raved about. The pasta we did order was okay. But again, the smallest $18 plate of tomato sauce pasta I've ever seen. I wouldn't go back.

I came here one night during my stay in town for work. We passed a woman walking her dog earlier in the day and asked her for recommendations for places to have drinks. She mentioned this place and we decided to try it. We sat out on the beautiful outside patio under the lights and had drinks. The ambiance was great, the drinks were good, and our waiter was fabulous! He spent time talking to us about the town and things to do. If I ever find myself in Carlisle again, I will definitely go back. I would love to try the food as well. The menu looked wonderful!

Amazing how the right waiter can make or break your full experience. Mine made me want to leave and never turn back, nevertheless, the waiter next to me made everything on the menu sound like a heavenly experience. I had the salmon dish. The portion was kind of small and my potato slices weren't fully cooked but the salmon was tasty. I came here for the outdoor atmosphere and that's what earned it 4 stars.

Food was delicious. But that's the end of it. They advertise an "apertitivo" but apparently they never researched what that means in actual Italian culture. Everything was way overpriced, and not just for Carlisle. Service was lackluster.

  • Pam O.

Recently visited this establishment for our anniversary dinner. We splurged and we were rather disappointed. When you decide to splurge you really want it to be special. We were disappointed in everything except the wine. I had the Cannelloni which was bland and the pasta wrapping tasted raw, like it had never been cooked. We also had the calamari which was overcooked and not very well seasoned with a relatively bland sauce. The broccoli was served just out of a steamer, no additional flavor was added. And the pears in the salad were definitely canned. All in all, not much of a celebration.

I've been to Piatto twice during a business trip, and I think it's such a great find in a small town! The ambiance is very elegant and cozy and the service is very friendly and welcoming. My favorite dish that I've ordered is the lobster ravioli and their calamari is perfectly cooked and seasoned. The portion sizes are not overwhelmingly large, and in my opinion, are just right (but a lot smaller than what you would get at Olive Garden). If you ever find yourself in Carlisle, I would say skip the diners and the grills, and give Piatto a try.

While I'm not sure Piatto is deserving of its "Simply the Best" title for Italian food, it did offer a very nice dining experience. The decor is simple but classy, the wine list is extensive, and our server was very attentive without ever being in the way. I had the salmon, which was perfectly cooked, and complemented well by the pesto topping. The saffron risotto was wonderful. My husband had the lobster ravioli, which was very good, but was a bit small for a main dish. Order a salad or other app to go along with it if that's your choice. Desserts were delicious! We enjoyed the bonet (warm chocolate custardy goodness) and the tiramisu. I would certainly visit here again, and I would highly recommend it.

I had a really nice time at the Piatto bar last evening! It's small and cozy, and there's MUSIC (something i missed while eating in their dining area last time). Great service, yummy munchies (typically the "bar food" is served 4pm to 6pm, but there are some good appetizers on the regular menu, too). We had mortadella with toasts, some super yummy blue cheese (with chestnut honey...mmmm!), and a basket of bread. The drink menu is extensive. Lots of delicious wines from Italy and some fun mixed drinks, too. I'll be back!

Very good food, but inattentive service from the waiter dropped this place a star. We are accustomed to restaurants in DC moving the service along briskly to turn over tables, but this restaurant allowed us to enjoy a leisurely pace - about 90 minutes from arriving to leaving. However, the waiter rarely checked in to fill water or see how things were going. The hostess did check in, filled water, and followed up on our meal. We had the salmon and the hand-rolled pasta with basil sauce. Both were very good, and the portion size was fine - just the right amount for dinner. The house red was a bargain at $6 for a decent wine and we had the warm olive appetizer. Our table was over a vent, which was definitely chilly when the air kicked on. Lots of guests ate outside and seemed to be comfortable except one table by the sidewalk which had to endure a smoker seated on a bench, on the sidewalk, but very near the table. All in all, a good meal. I would definitely go back, but would ask to be seated away from a vent or outdoor smoking area and establish up front with the waiter that I prefer to have more regular contact.

Amazing calamari, lobster ravioli, and spaghetti con vongole. Sat inside in the side room with brick walls. Pretty atmosphere but wasn't crazy about the outdoor patio tables being used in there. But besides that, the food was great and service was good

The penne alla vodka was possibly the best I've ever had! OMG it was good!! Don't think about ordering anything else!!! Only thing that holds the review from 5 stars is that the service was kinda bad. Maybe it was just this certain waiter I had but the dude was SLOW! However that won't hold me back from going back in there.

  • Kirstie L.

The food was great! However, the service is TERRIBLE. I would recommend this place on a slow night because the second they get busy your server disappears for 20 minutes each time. We sat down around 8pm and didn't leave until almost 10pm. Our waiter came back to our table 3 different times before he even took our drink order! He just refilled our waters... Oh and it took us 30 minutes to get our check. Also, just a heads up the women's room is actually IN the bartender area, really awkward.

My favorite restaurant in Carlisle.... the food is excellent. the chef has a nack at putting together cominations that you wouldn't think of... but end up tasting awesome! Always uses local fresh products.... OUSTANDING.

Over-priced for what you get and for the atmosphere. Portions are small. The tables are ugly green faux marble. I don't know why they stopped using table cloths. They only accept reservations for parties of 6 or more, and Piatto is no longer BYOB.

Neither the kitchen nor the server noticed they served me an entire bowl of unopened clams and mussels. Unforgivable and dangerous.

I've never been unhappy with a meal from here. Everything from the veal to the fritto misto to the scallops have been great. Yes, it's pricey and I think the addition of the packaged breadsticks at the table is a little ghastly but overall it's worth a visit.

Lovely dinner here this weekend. We arrived without a reservation and were greeted immediately and told a table would be ready in a few minutes. I was quite impressed that every single staff member who walked by us stopped to greet us and ask if we were being helped. Charming waitress and very good food. We look forward to returning.

I ate here a few times in May of 2012. It is the best restaurant I found in Carlisle. A duck special was a little disappointing, but a stuffed pork loin was especially good. Lovely gelato. Great little chocolate pudding.

Pleasantly surprised, and great food in a wonderful setting. Took our small family and could not have asked for a better place on a Sunday night. Attentive staff, friendly, good food. The best kept secret in Carlisle

I was traveling home for the holidays and found this place through yelps iPad app. Service was excellent and the food was delicious. We also had a a very friendly waitress. The atmosphere was cozy and cute. Their gelato is made fresh! I'm on my iPad right now so I'm not going to type much more, but I will say I'm tempted to stop by here again on my way home:)

The service was great, but the food was average. Considering the location and the very limited options Carlisle has to offer, it's a top choice for the area. . The fried seafood platter was prepared well, but it lacked some flavor. The lobster ravioli had a great flavor. The pasta was al dente and the sauce was creamy and tasty. The Veal in the red wine sauce and mushrooms was not bad. It was hearty and very flavorful; the only bad thing about the veal was that the meat itself was not a very good cut. It wasn't tender enough- almost rubbery. Finally, the bread that was brought out to the table was stale and tasted luke it had been purchased at Costco the week prior and left open. All in all, of you're in the area and want something nice, it's a place to checkout. However, if you can hold off , you're better off at least driving the 20 minutes to Harrisburg.

I was in town for work and decided to give this place a try since it was close to my hotel. Its a nice cozy place and the wait staff were great. The bread was fresh and steaming when I got it. I had the chicken entree - the one with the marsala sauce (don't remember the exact name). Altogether, a good place for some decent food in Carlisle outside of the chain restaurants all around town. I'm coming back if I visit again.

This restaurant is by far the best in Carlisle. In fact it is one of my favorites ever, despite what Eddie W says. I have eaten in great restaurants all over Europe and North America and I can say without any hesitation that Piatto would be a great restaurant wherever it was located. Now this is not just my opinion. We own a Bed and Breakfast just around the corner from Piatto, and for us Piatto is a real blessing in that we KNOW we can recommend it to our guests with no fear of disappointment. We have nothing but respect for the quality of the staff there and would recommend it to anyone without any hesitation. For Eddie W to write as he has, I would say that either the restaurant had a bad night (which may be possible although I've never encountered it) or Eddie was suffering from dyspepsia or an insane desire for spaghetti & meatballs. Seriously, the Fritto Misto is terrific, You will NEVER have scallops as good anywhere else, and my personal favorite, the Costoletta of pork is quite simply outstanding. If you can make it that far, the home made gelati are original flavors such as blood-orange, and the Affogato is just sensational. There is no dress code as such, but if you are going for a special anniversary or birthday, by all means dress up. You'll fit right in. I wish you Happy Eating!

Tried this little place last night for the first time. The atmosphere was very nice and relaxing but the music selection seemed odd and random ranging from classical to techno-esque. The service was good but it took longer than expected to get both our wine and our main courses. We had the cheese plate appetizer which was delicious. My wife was happy with the risotto but my lobster ravioli tasted like something from Costco and was not exactly hot when it arrived. Overall we enjoyed ourselves and our meals but we weren't blown away by the food. I'll go back again but just for the wine and atmosphere.

Mmm, Piatto! We loved coming here in college. The fact that it was BYOB made it all the better - you could have a really nice meal out, but not break the bank if you wanted wine! It was love at first sight. The food is quite delicious, but unfortunately I can't remember anything specifically I had (not because of lack of awesomeness, just the passage of time). ;) The atmosphere is great too, with a cute patio area and nice inside decorations.

We were in Carlisle PA and decided to try Piatto after reading about it on yelp.. My husband had the calamari salad which he loved.. I has the house salad which was good but really didn't wow me.. The menu made it sound much better than it actually tasted. We shared a sausage pizza that was supposed to be grilled. First the sausage was more like pepperoni and the crust was a ready made flat bread with grill marks if I had to guess for $9 .. Way over priced for what we were served. The spaghetti putenesca was good but a small portion. My husband had veal Marsala that he enjoyed and my son had the fried seafood misto.. Nothing special .. The atmosphere was okay and the service less than fair..

It's been a while since I've been to Piatto, but recalled having very good experiences in the past. I took a large group for a business dinner and, this time, was generally unimpressed. The service was slow and unenthusiastic. As for the meal, it wasn't the same caliber as I recalled. I ordered the sauteed scallops - and was disappointed when the arrived fried, rubbery and tastless. The chive cream and broad beans saved the dish. A few collegues ordered pasta dishes - most agreed the meal was just fine, but nothing to rave about. While there weren't any major complaints, I was disappointed in the overall lack of effort exhibited in the service, the preparation and the presentation of the meal.

I relly like this place. Charming, quiet, feels nice to sit there and enjoy the surroundings. Probably the nicest Carlisle has to offer. The only one of its kind. And now that they serve wine it's even better, although pricier than if you brought your own. The ravioli is wonderful as well as the chicken dishes. The salads are delightful. It's a real treat.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
