I stop and the Hamilton today with a friend and from the door I saw nothing special about this after hearing from my friend how good the food is. So I ordered the fish platter which came in a timely fashion but had no taste what so ever the fish actually tasted frozen or been in the freezer to long the fries were garbage the Cole slaw tasted more like burnt motor oil I left with only taking 1 bite of the fish coleslaw and a fry. I asked for a take away and paid the $18.30 which was way over price for the quality of food you get. Immediately after leaving I actually looked for a homeless person give to them then I said no and threw it in the bottom of the nearest Waste Management dumpster. Looking back now I would pay anyone $18.30 not the eat there ever.

This restaurant has been in the Carlisle area for a long time. It is family owned, and the staff is always so friendly. It is also a great place for a quick meal, because the food comes out fast, and the servers are always running around to have quick service. I would mainly go there for their hotchee dogs, which is a hot dog with cheese, mustard, chili, and diced raw onions. It may sound like simply a chilli cheese dog, but there is just something different about their recipe maybe, that makes it so much more. It is always a busy place, and a popular spot for locals, as well as people who hear about the hotchee dogs. I also usually get mashed potatoes, and french fries with gravy. I make sure to go there each year when I am in the area.

Went here for an early dinner with the daughter. Not crowded at 330. Seat yourself. Very friendly waitress. I ordered the hotchee dog which comes with fries and slaw. Excellent. So good I ordered a second dog. The daughter, ever the adventurer, ordered the chicken finger platter which comes with fries and slaw. Add 2 waters and the bill was about $18. We enjoyed the family atmosphere & will return.

Food was good, but the service was horrible! Are waitress was miserable and rude. Also the rest of the staff was yelling at each other the whole time. You are better off just getting take out, rather than dealing with the s*** show of a wait staff!

How is it possible to make eggs with absolutely no flavor? What does one do to eggs to remove any and all flavor from them?

The Hamilton one of the mainstay Diners in Carlisle PA simplistic and quaint reminds you of the small diners where you can sit at the counter or a booth. Great for a quick breakfast, lunch or dinner. Don't want fancy this is it. As for being a local hot spot the Hamilton has graced Carlisle for years and this is one place everybody knows! The staff are always friendly the service always good. And if you love a Chili Dog every now and then the best in the area!

I went here to try a hotchee dog. They were nothing special. I also find it ridiculous how small the drinking glasses are for both soda and water. There really is no reason to come here at all.

The Hotchee Dog is a delicious open secret. We loved this place. A completely bland interior was probably way more charming before a mid-80s formica slathering, but the staff are so nice and the food so sweetly old-fashioned that it doesn't matter. I loved my Hotchee Dog - a hot dog, topped with chili, a slice of cheese and some diced raw onions. I had the platter, which included fries with beef gravy and cole slaw. A chocolate shake rounded out the meal. All were just right. The chili on the dog is very nice - a mild, ground beef and bean chili with a hint of cinnamon. The BF had a hot turkey sandwich and fries and coleslaw. The sandwich included dressing. He pronounced it just right. His one gripe: no cranberry sauce to go with. A minor point, we both agreed, but it would have really made the dish sing for him. We are not likely to get back here soon, as we were passing through on the way to Tennessee, but would certainly consider it worth a detour if within a 30 to 45 minute radius.

I don't get these reviews. Hamilton was a disappointment...every dish including Hotcheedogs. Best in PA? Really? Famed hot dog platter was offered with onions and chili only (see pics)...but no sauerkraut was available. Huh? Fish sandwich was over-fried and dried out. Friday Clam Chowder was near clam-less. Friendly, helpful service. Certainly great prices. Popular with local clientele. Personally, I'd prefer higher prices AND better quality of food/preparation. Cash only.

I've gone to the Hamilton since I was young and it brings back great memories. I recently moved from California to Arizona and there really isn't a place that compares to the Hamilton. Looking forward to a hot dog with everything when I visit next month.

sooooo gross, flavorless, not fresh and unhealthy food.

You cannot call yourself a true Cumberland County native unless you have eaten here! This place is a staple in Carlisle and family owned. They treat regular customers like family. Food is American greasy spoon fare but made with love. Hotchee dogs are a must! Hot dogs with cheese, mustard, chili, and onions. Get a side of fries and gravy with it. Mmmm! Don't be put off by the interior, it's a bit outdated but who really cares. Get a hotchee dog! One downside is that they do not take debit/credit cards so have your cash ready.

Was enjoying my hot dogs until I watched the guy who works the grill handle food with his bare hands, then handle cash and work the register, and then return to handling food without washing or sanitizing his hands. We won't be back. I wish there was a way to give less than one star.

It is the place to be in Carlisle!!! Classic cuisine and the hotche dog can't be touched!!!

The hotchee dog is one of the best combos out there. Chili, onions, cheese, perfectly cooked hot dog, and a nice bun. It's a great place for a casual and fairly quick meal. The staff is friendly and it has a typical diner atmosphere. Not a place to take your significant other for a nice date but it's a great place to take a couple of your buddies to pig out. I've only had the hotchee dog so I can't speak for the rest of the menu.

  • Joy M.

Food is great they fix it like you want it. Drinking glass is really too small but they are great about refilling it. Their seems to be a lot of discord at this place, sometimes they are super friendly and others they just make you feel unwelcome, like you are a bother for them to wait in you. Waite staff needs to smile more

There is just something about this place. I've only had the Hotchee dog and the spaghetti, and it's probably been years (I wasn't living nearby), but I have to say this place is great. I don't even LIKE hotdogs, but I've had and liked Hotcheedogs. The service was always fantastic, and the staff is so much fun. If I'm going to eat at a restaurant I'm going to do it at a local one and not a chain, so I am certain I'll be back.

Can't be in Carlisle without getting a famous hotchie dog or burger. Makes you just want to keep going back for more.

I'll be honest, I personally hated the food (I only had a Hotchee dog, to be fair), though people endlessly rave about the hotdogs. While this is many years later, I have a Christmas memory to share that will hopefully entice you, the potential customer, to support this local biz. In 2005, when I was in law school, I solicited basically every local restaurant/small business for donations for a needy family of 7 I was sponsoring for Christmas for charity. I figured that the gift of a night's worth of dinner would be a pretty valuable thing to such a big family. Many local businesses gave generously, but the owners of Hamilton did something extra special that I will never forget. They gave not only about $75 worth of gift certificates to the restaurant, but the owner, tearing up, shoved a $50 in my hand and said "here, give this to them for groceries." Thinking about their uncommon generosity still chokes me up a bit. And based on this, I urge you to come in for a hotdog, or something, to support some of the good people that are still left in this world. The 4 stars is for being awesome people.

Went here for the first time today. The place was packed, amazing smells and friendly atmosphere. Was seated and immediately given menus and water. But the waitress seemed stressed and took a bit (ten mins) to take our order, and seemed surprised when we only ordered hot chee dogs. I've heard so much about them and was excited to try them. Everyone sitting on our side of the restaurant seemed happy and enjoying their food. When the food came, it was somewhat lackluster. The cheese was a cold piece of american, and the onions weren't very warm. But overall it was pretty good. Not a five star hotdog or restaurant, but a good meal. The waitress didn't seem that happy to be serving two college students, but nobody is in a college town, however a bit of niceness goes a long way. The price of the hotdog was a bit higher than I expected, almost $7 for a small dog and fries. I'll definitely come back for breakfast because the people sitting next to us had a delicious looking plate of hotcakes. But I don't think the hot chee dog lived up to its name at all.

This place is definitely worth checking out. Diner like atmosphere, but excellent food. Try the hot-chi dog

This place makes you glad to be an American. This is superb diner / road food. The Hotchee dog is the best hot dog I have ever had (this includes sampling them on five continents). The creamed chipped beef is absolutely delicious. In fact, I have enjoyed everything I have tried on their menu. Further, the service is excellent. The staff treat you like family. As I write this, I am looking forward to going there again tomorrow and my mouth is already watering. Highly recommended.

The perfect small town restaurant that could prosper anywhere. You must have proper expectations before going. Not a place for the perfect steak or extra layers of creativity, just perfectly done food you grew up on at fair pricing. Best breakfast and lunch in town. BLT, turkey, and blockbuster are amazing sandwiches. Great service and great people. The BEST chili dog anywhere. I travel much for work and try dogs in every city. The hotchee is the best chili and onions and overall taste of a dog from anywhere. Just don't ruin it by asking for ketchup....

If you're expecting fancy food and fine ambiance, go somewhere else. If you want GOOD basic food, like you're granny made, the Hamilton may be the place for you. If you want it served by a fast, friendly waitress who might remind you of your cousin, you'll feel at home at the Hamilton. Must admit I've never had a hochee dog--just not my style. But I've never had anything here that wasn't great and we eat here frequently. Best coleslaw in the world, homemade sausage, crisp home fries, real ham, milk shakes made the old fashioned way--what more could you want? Oh, and the prices are reasonable. By the way, it's clean. Not fancy--just good.

Dear God. . . I believe every day in Carlisle requires a hotchee dog. This deliciousness is a chili cheese dog topped with onions. The cheese is an actual slice of cheese not nacho or whiz. Some how the hotchee dog manages the perfect balance of cheese, chili, bun, onion and dog that I have yet to experience anywhere else! The chili is a delight in that it is not too salty or chunky or in anyway less than the perfect chili dog chili. The breakfast is also super hearty and delicious. The potatos are crispy and wonderful, the meat is meaty. Super friendly service! Great food! Hamilton is a delight.

It's the Hotchee or Hotchi (not sure about the official spelling because I didn't see it on the menu) that you want to order. It's a hot dog with cheese, chili, onions and mustard and it's nothing short of amazing. I should have ordered two!! Fries were really good and the turkey club was spot on. Atmosphere was a little lacking, but wouldn't keep me out. I'd definitely return.

On the suggestion of a co-worker, my wife and I swung here for a quick lunch. Can't get any faster than a grilled cheese and the hot dogs that every Dickinson college kid in Carlisle raves about. And I will say, for as simple as this place really is, they make a good chili dog. Other reviews are pretty much spot on the money here. Nothing fancy, nothing extravagant or expensive, just good diner type food served quickly. They lose a star for not taking credit cards but aside from that, everything else is good.

My husband brought me here after a quick trip to Carlisle. It's definitely an institution. Get the hotchee dog and fries or onion rings. The place smells delicious, thanks to the copious amount of hot dogs on the griddle right by the door. The family who runs the restaurant is nice and service was fast. The hotchee dogs are really amazing. The chili is not too thin, not to chunky, the melted cheese is awesome and the onions!! I don't know how they get the onions so light and flaky. It's a definite must-eat if you're in the area.

The best chilli dogs in the area. My order: 2 dogs with sauce and onions, and an order of cheese fries. The only reason they don't get six stars for their dogs is, because Shorty's in Washington, PA are the best in the world:)

I stopped in at about 1pm on a Friday and they were HOPPING. Every table in both rooms appeared to be full of locals -- a good sign. I sat at the counter. One of the very busy waitresses quickly brought me a menu and some water. I had read about their hotchee dog, so, as a lifelong fan of chili dogs, I had to give it a try. As I looked at the menu, however, I was confused. The word "hotchee" does not appear anywhere on the menu (later I saw the word on the back of the waitress' shirts). "Hot Dog" does appear once, but no mention is made anywhere of available toppings. Being in a hurry, and not sure exactly what was included by default on the hotchee dog (chili and cheese, yes, but mustard? onions?), I asked for two dogs with chili and cheese. When they came, I was underwhelmed. The cheese was a slice of cheese broken in half and tucked along the sides of the dog, and was still somewhat cold. Cold isn't exactly a sensation that I expect or welcome in a chili dog! But, fine, I usually don't get cheese on my chili dogs anyway. Usually, I just want a bun, a dog, and a mess of chili. So how did those primary components fare? The bun was okay, soft but strong enough to hold up the chili, with a mild flavor that, if it didn't add much, didn't detract at all either. The dog was okay, too. Skinless, so it wasn't going to have the snap that I prefer, but otherwise with a decent texture. The dogs are grilled, which added some nice flavor. The chili was good, perhaps even very good, with the perfect consistency for chili-dog chili, and with obvious meat (rather than mysterious brown gloop). Ignoring the cold cheese, and putting the other three parts together, it comes to a solid...okay. If I came by again, I might order another one, but not two. And I would definitely branch out and try some of their other offerings because the locals sure seemed to be enjoying themselves.

You gotta understand one thing, the Hamilton is a local legend. It's part of the triumvirate of legendary eating spots in Carlisle. It's right there with Fay's Country Kitchen (for breakfast), and Massey's (for dessert). The Hamilton can take care of your other two meals! Has been legendary for years. If you're from there, you need only say "Hotchee Dog" and an instant connection between you and whoever you're talking to is formed. The Hamilton will always take me back to my high school days and college days when my friends and I would swing by after a football game or before we went out, and I'd grab a couple of hotchee dogs and a vanilla coke. The hotchee burgers aren't bad either, but they never get the love that the hot dogs get. I still go back whenever I'm town, and have turned my kids onto it, too. If you're looking for fancy, this isn't the spot. If you're looking for great food and great service...then this is the place for you.

I had high hopes for the hotchee dogs. Everyone raves about them, and I admit to running with the pack. I was unimpressed by the two I ate. They were warm, the ingredients seemed fresh... the experience was just average. Not bad, not eye-openingly "was that Elvis?" great. So yes, I was disappointed. Perhaps it would have been better if I weren't a vegetarian.

Typical greasy spoon, family owned. Really fast service and cheap eats. I have gotten a hotchee BURGER (not the dog...I know, blasphemous), fries with gravy, and a vanilla or cherry coke every single time I've been there in my memory. They make the flavored cokes with syrup - the real way!

Ah, the venerable Hotchee. It has been a couple of years since I was back in the place of my birth. There are only a few things that anyone would miss about Carlisle, but I do miss my Hotchees! How has this not been on M v F or Triple D?

Gotta love the hamiliton, the same family has been running this place since my grandparents came to Carlisle. This and the Gman were def my dads hangouts during his time at Dickinson. And they were mine until I moved.

Hot-chee dogs, fries with gravy . . . and a milk shake. Hot-chee dog, (noun), "hot chilly" cheese dog with minced onions and mustard. WARNING: They're not on the menu, you just have to know that they exist. Good prices, good food, nothing fancy - just the way a place like this is supposed to be. I'd describe it as a diner mixed with a restaurant. If that makes any sense. Lots of options on the menu - but if you're a first timer do it up right. Hot-chee dogs, fries with gravy, and a milk shake (go with vanilla). I don't know how long this place has been around, but my father remembers it from when he was young and he left Carlisle in 1967. I remember something about it being around since he was an older kid so that would be going back to the 1940s. Here's a good link: dickinson.edu/magazine/a… .

Just had 2 hotchee dogs this afternoon after my stomach was craving for something on the lines of a hot dog or a cheeseburger. Although the hot dogs come with mustard, I got ketchup on them instead. This little diner/restaurant is one of the best places in the Carlisle area. If you are near, stop by and order a few hotchee dogs and french fries. You will not regret it!

4 stars for the hotchee dogs, wow my breath was kickin after devouring those bad boys. Well worth it though.
