In honor of Cinco de Mayo, I must write a review of my favorite local Mexican restaurant. Rey Azteca is as authentic as it gets in the entire Pittsburgh area. Don't be fooled by the "hole in the wall" vibes that the exterior of their building gives off -- this place is top notch and a very well run restaurant. We've been going to Reys since they first opened. At first it seemed as if only the owner spoke English (in addition to Spanish), but now much of the staff seems to be bilingual. Being able to speak some Spanish while dining adds to the atmosphere, as does the traditional Mariachi band type music. Yes, the parking lot is small, but we've always been able to find a spot. Despite the size of this small restaurant, we've never had to wait for a table. Of course, we're usually dining fairly early because we have little kids in tow. Chips & salsa appear almost magically before you've barely settled into your seat. Service continues to be excellent throughout your meal with prompt, friendly service and attention to detail. The food is why we really come back though -- perfectly authentic Mexican food. All of the combos are good, and we frequently order one of the daily specials so that we can keep trying everything on the huge menu. But, I keep coming back to the Grilled Camarones (Shrimp) Fajitas. It's like a big Fajita sandwich with sauteed shrimp, onions, peppers, and seasoning inside of two flour tortillas, then grilled and served with lettuce, tomato, salsa, sour cream and guacamole. Their guacamole is just right - nicely seasoned but not overdone so as to obscure the creamy deliciousness of the avocado. They serve traditional Mexican sodas in glass bottles plus a big list of Coke products and iced tea with free refills. Sadly, no margaritas here. But, they do allow you to bring your own beer (BYOB) and probably wine too, which is a rare find in this area. So plan ahead and bring your favorite cold beverage to go with Reys heavenly Mexican food. Enjoy!

Rey's is arguably the best Mexican food in the area. Always a full parking lot at supper time. Service tends to be quick and the prices are reasonable.

This is the real deal. The best Mexican food! My recommendation is anything with shrimp. I love the shrimp burritos! They put in a lot of big shrimps. Little known fact...BOYB! We always plan ahead and take our own Mexican beer. Don't be put off by a line at the door. The service is fast and they turn tables quickly. We try to go every week...it is that good!

Dined here recently with some friends still living in my old hometown and was considerably impressed by the authentic quality of their Mexican fare. While it is not quite as good as many of the bountiful Latino options availble to me on the MD/VA area, it is easily one of the best Mexican dining options in Western PA. Keep in mind that this is NOT Tex-Mex, which is what too many Americans imagine Mexican food is supposed to be given that is what all the major chains have been serving to dumbed-down US diners for years. Rather, this is true south-of-the-border fare that you typically only find in bigger cities with only minor adjustments made for Yankee palates. For a small town like Butler to have such an ethnically sound option is a giant leap ahead for the local culinary profile.

Coming from northern VA which is way more easy to access food from other ethnicity. Being sole Mexican/somewhat Spanish restaurant here in Butler, definitely nothing you can't compare to. Food taste good, not great. The price is very affordable! The parking lot is very awkward to park and if you go there for dinner, they are easy to get filled quickly.

Food is amazing, prices are sooo very affordable...love this place - cheese sauce with the chips is to die for !!! highly recommend the chicken and cheese flautas

I don't understand why everyone thinks this place is so great. Maybe I caught them on a bad day, but the food was super bland and the "salsa" was closer to ketchup. The staff was nice, but I was sorely disappointed in the quality of the food. The owner said he was from San Diego, and I actually found it easier to order in Spanish... perhaps that raised my expectations for authentic Mexican cuisine higher than they should have been given the region.

Love this place for mexican food! The food is awesome and service is great. I moved to Pittsburgh from California, so I do feel I have had some of the best mexican food to compare with this place. Just a bummer that there's only a few locations because the other mexican restaurants in new castle and cranberry do not have my fave dish: the pork carnitas with the verde sauce. If you like spicy food, definitely get the verde sauce. The pork in the carnitas is so soft as if it was braised or slow cooked. You don't need a knife, it will just fall off. I've tried other dishes off the menu, and none has disappointed me so far. The servers are very attentive and nice. The food comes out fast and hot.

One of my go to's anytime I'm home visiting friends and family. The bottomless chips and salsa can't be beat but of course I can't pass up the white queso dip...sooooo good. Seriously, the best queso dip on the planet. The prices are really reasonable, especially once you see the portion sizes! I have always loved the food there. Go!

Good simple Mexican foods at a nice affordable price! The fajitas have a simple flavorful seasoning to it making them just right. The mole and chili con carne sauces are on point. The guacamole is average, but the salsa has a nice kick which forgives the guacamole let down. The beans and rice are actually some of the best in their category that I've ever had, somehow! I've been the Mexico plenty of times, and I've lived in the heart of Mexican southern California, but I keep coming back to this spot. I don't taste much authenticity in their food, but they have flavor. I give it a 4 stars for their mix of just mediocre service, and the lack of fresh ingredients. Lacking in fresh ingredients, yet still has me raving about their food above? I don't understand either, you just have to try it.

Outstanding service and delicious, authentic Mexican food! My personal favorite dinner is the Chicken & Cheese Flautas. We always order the Pico de Gallo appetizer, which is always very fresh and tasty. Beware the yummy Queso dip--it's addictive too! The takeout is also quick, and the value and portions are excellent for the price. True, it's not very big and it's BYOB, but we go for the food, not to hang out or drink. Rey Azteca is my favorite restaurant in Butler. We have been going every week for a few years now, and I've never been disappointed. For those who think it's "bland," try the hot sauces--they range from Mild to Paint-Peeling.

There's a reason the parking lot here has always been filled since the day it opened well over 10 years ago.. The food, atmosphere, service & prices are unmatched by any other restaurant in Butler! The complimentary chips & salsa are always a great start! You won't leave here hungry! The menu is endless, the prices are very fair and the service is lightning fast! Muy deliciosa! Mi favorito!!

I had the Chicken Enchiladas Verdes -- Simple, straightforward, and delicious. AND, it comes with a tasty thin-cut steak "on the side." The only knock on Rey Azteca is that they don't serve alcohol.

  • Cathy C.

This place is the best for Mexican in the area. They have generous portions at affordable prices. The food is always served fresh and it tastes delicious! I like to enjoy a margarita with my Mexican but they don't serve alcohol here. That doesn't stop me from going though. They can get pretty busy but I've never had more than a 15-20 minute wait. I'll be back!

Three words: chicken & cheese flautas. They're not healthy, but they're covered with a great queso sauce that I would buy by the bottle. If you have given this place less than 5 stars, you haven't tried this yet. Some of their other offerings aren't so great, but I'd give them 6 stars because of the flautas. Their refried beans are also amazing. I worked in Mexico off and on for over 1/2 a year...this is about as authentic as it gets. It's even cheap, too!

I think I was expecting too much after I read the other reviews. It wasnt bad but Id drive to Compadres in Grove City before Id go back. The service was very good but to me the food seemed very bland.

  • J B.

Hello, this is NOT authentic, it's Mexican with a Pennsylvania twist. Not much spice (ooh, burns my mouth), not much taste. Bland, which is what PA people prefer.

  • Andrew H.

Exceeded all expectations for an unseemly restaurant on the side of a major commercial road in Butler, PA. More authentic than Emiliano's, Mad Mex, Patron. Authentic waiter and employees (if you know what I mean), gaudily painted decor, not the best ambiance, almost a divey vibe -- the food is the clear selling point. They don't even have an online menu. The free chips are freshly made thin and not salted -- I enjoy the purity of fresh tortilla chips. The salsa was standard, not chunky. I had the dinner special which offered a sampling of many typical items: a chicken tamale, a beef enchilada, a taco, and a couple other selections. The ground beef was seasoned well and plentiful. The beans and rice were on point. The mole sauce was very good. Perfect portion size and at $12, good bang for your buck. The page of lunch specials is also very enticing, would definitely come back.

Stopped in here late because another place we were looking for was closed--and I'm sure glad we did. Our party of eight was served quickly, politely, and efficiently. The food was fantastic. Tacos, burritos, enchiladas, chalupas, chilis relleno, and the barbara were among the dishes that landed on our table--every one of them delicious and...surprise...cheap, cheap, cheap. My great regret--now that I read the other reviews--is that I didn't get the flautas. I was "this close" but decided not to be over-indulgent. Damn! On the other hand, I now have a reason to get myself back up there sooner rather than later.

Okay, weirdness to ensue. My family and I owned this restaurant back in the 90's when virtually no one in Butler, PA ate Chinese and we were pretty much the only Chinese restaurant in the neighborhood. My dad is a great cook, but no one came because kids would freak out about "WHAT'S AN EGGROLL? EW!" and my parents bringing sweet and sour chicken for snack time had kids weirded out and crying for chips or fruit roll up. I came back for the first time since we moved away for a little nostalgia tour and went to my old home, the Giant Eagle, drove by skate castle (which is tragically closed for the summer!!!) and was able to figure out the address of our old place by googling Bill's Beer Barn (who can forget they hung out next to a "Beer Barn" for most of their childhood?). While on our way there, we joked about "it might be a Mexican restaurant now!" And sure enough, it's a Mexican restaurant much to my amusement. We had to go inside for dinner because I was dying of curiousity of how it's like. So according to the plaques inside, they're a voter's choice Mexican restaurant. Now, back when I was here, the only "Mexican" place was Chi Chi's and funny enough they shut down after a massive Hep A breakout (how scary). They were much more crowded than we usually were, and even had more booths installed because they have that many more customers. However, looking up at the stucco walls and the hidden pagoda over the new thatched roof I see the remnants of what used to be a Chinese restaurant. We get seated right where we used to keep the Christmas tree and a buffet table. *TEAR TEAR TEAR* Where I've been living the past ... i don't know, 11 years? We have about a 40% hispanic population nevermind the fact that there's a good chunk of undocumented individuals so try 50%. The tricky part is, despite us having a sizable Mexican population- a lot of the "hole in the wall" Mexican restaurants here are owned by Salvadorians who do not specialize in authentic Mexican restaurants (thus butcher Mexican food), or they're a more "upscale" Mexican place who caters to a more trendy crowd. Even though it's not remotely close to authentic Mexican I judge a place by its beef fajita because everyone and their mom eats beef fajitas and I want to know what warrants "Best Mexican Restaurant" two years in a row by the Butler Eagle. We were pleasantly surprised that there was a dedicated "vegetarian" section on the menu which is a rarity in the DC area. My vegan S.O. got the combo #9 sans cheese which was a spinach and potato enchillada. When my food came out, I have a feeling that the meat is pre-prepared on the side and they sautee some peppers and onions and cooked meat together when its ordered because to be quite honest it was dry and the food came out a little too quickly. The steak was a cheap cut of meat too, but it was a lot of food for $12 dollars so it wins the value card. My favorite place to get fajitas back home you're waiting at least 20-30 minutes to get a skirt steak fajita but you're nursing a large margarita so time flies by quickly. I did not find a drink menu so I think this is an alcohol free establishment. My S.O. raved about the sauce on his enchiladas and was super excited about having a potato enchilada. He honestly said "this is the best Mexican food I've had since moving (from the South)" a decade ago. I had a recent trip to Fort Worth, Texas and I have to agree the Mexican food here is more on par with what you get in Texas than what's in DC. Being a popular self-made Mexican restaurant out in Butler PA has a lot of merit, especially one that serves food that is virtually like its right out of Texas in an area with an almost non-existent Hispanic population.

This place when though a change of management a few years ago and ever since then the quality of the food is horrible. If you like frozen prepared mexican food, heated up and served, then you'll love this place. The food is tasteless and bland, typical Pennsylvania food. Save your money and go to Taco Bell for the same quality.

  • Adam K.

This was my first time eating mexican food since returning to Pennsylvania after a 6 year hiatus in Arizona. I was shocked when I dug in to my meal and the quality was excellent. They food was fresh served up quickly and fairly priced. I was disappointed that they charge for hot sauce and extra chips but since that changed recently I assume the locals were taking advantage. I won't take off a star for a business trying to stay alive in-spite of patrons plundering hot sauce and shoppers snatching chips.

  • Amy F.

I am editing my review. I do like this place but the last 3 times I went there the meat was dry in my chicken flauta. The flavor is still there and the service is excellent so I never complain. Even when they overcook this food it is still way better than Taco Bell. My only other complaint is that the parking lot could be paved. It is currently muddy and uneven.

my wife and i love Rey Azteca, the service is outstanding, very friendly and fast. Love the atmosphere inside. The chips, salsa & white queso dip are outstanding, we empty the bowls every time. The burritos are simple and very good. The prices are very reasonable. Great place to go to for a good, fast meal. It is BYOB so if you want to bring a beer go ahead.

  • Chris B.

My family and I have eaten here many times, and it has never disappointed. You get a comfortable amount of good food for a price that won't break you. My one nit would be that parking is a little tight--the lot is small and the spaces are narrow, so be careful opening your car doors.

  • Eric P.

Good service, nice and cheap, and good food! Even though I have only eaten there twice, I think it is a great place to go if you're feeling up for some Mexican food. Sometimes the food is a tad bit greasy, though.

"I know real Mexican food" wtf? This place is maintained by Mexicans and it is absolutely authentic. I have no idea who owns it and I could not possibly care less. Service has always been amazing. The prices are great for the amount (and quality) of food you receive. Currently living in Brooklyn, NY and I haven't been able to find a Mexican restaurant that compares. Not to mention the time I was living in Los Angeles and had to go all the way to East LA to find a decent Mexican meal. Always well maintained and it's also centrally located- keep up the great work, Rey Azteca!

I absolutely love this place! The food is always delicious! Service is very fast but it can get pretty crowded on weekends at dinner time. Take out is always a good option. Only downside is the awkward parking. Otherwise, amazing!

Small place, good food, friendly staff. Only wish they catered to the BYOB option a bit classier, We brought white wine and were given two plastic cups and some ice. Other than that, it was great.

Ok we tried this place because a local from Butler RV (where we just bought a new camper) told us about it and we are so glad he did, the food was awesome. Authentic Mexican food, their ceviche was fantastic!!!!! We live in Cleveland, OH and I would definitely take a road trip back 2 hours to eat there again.

  • Lisa K.

I know this sounds silly, but I love this place simply because when I say "No Cheese, please", they understand that means on the whole plate, not just the main course part. It's the little things that make a restaurant stand out, and when you have a milk allergy, this is a big little thing. Besides that, the food is quite good, and I like the atmosphere, even though some compared it to a "dive like atmosphere".

When out of town we always look for mexican restaurants. We stopped for lunch and had a great experience. When we first sat down was served chips and salsa which the salsa was one of the best salsa's we've ever had. I had Chori Pollo (chicken and chorizo dish) which was delicious and something different than typical Mexican fare. My wife had the lunch sized faitias which was excellent. The refried beans were also very good. The service was very good and waiter was friendly. Would definitely come back when in the area.

Best food in the area. I recently moved out of the area, but I used to go so often that they knew who I was and what I wanted when I called to order take out!

Rey Azteca was literally the first Mexican food I'd ever eaten. I was concerned at first, since I'm not a huge fan of spicy things, but they had a great selection that I could pick from, plus they were willing to change anything to whatever my preferences were. Great service. And the queso cheese dip in the very beginning? Amazing. This place definitely gave me a love for Mexican food. I've had a lot since then, but Rey's is always the one I come back to.

  • Vicky K.

My fiancée and I have been coming here at least once a month for 6 years. It's one of our favorite restaurants in the world! Comparable prices to fast food, but with great flavor and awesome service. I would recommend to anyone! Favorite dish has to be the fajitas for 2! The parking does stink though, to be honest. But because there is a fast turn-around time for people going in for a quick meal, there are always a few spots available. This is a great place to go for a quick lunch too!

Great mexican food, waitors/waitresses who even speak Spanish fluently, and a wonderful atmosphere are the top three reasons on my list to go to Rey Azteca.

I have only been there once, but when I went, the food was great-minus the shrimp my friend ordered, which tasted really fishy. I had a combo plate which was all tasty and the guac was pretty good and not from a can. Try the veg dishes too, as they are really good. Quite a drive, though, from Pittsburgh.

Well, i guess I'm a little spoiled with the GOOD AUTHENTIC mexican, that I eat way too often.... because I was repulsed with the food that I was served. Where do I start? The queso was white and runny. I ordered a fajita with beef, chicken and shrimp. The shrimp was pretty good, but the chicken and the steak were so overcooked and dry that I could barley rip through it with my teeth. It came with a TINY pinch of cheese, that i barely could get across my first tortilla... it didn't come with any pico de gallo or tomatoes (thats apparently extra) And the rice was mushy and sticky. My boyfriend ordered a Combo with a burrito, an enchillada, and a tamale. He asked for a side of refried beans (which was an extra 2 dollars for a blob of flavorless beans.) The tamale was soft. The only good part about our experience was that the food came out very quickly (cause it clearly sits in a steamer all night long, to be scooped onto a plate after its all dried out and chewy). Almost everything was overcooked and the service was blah... just about as bland and flavorless as the food. Pros - very cheap, food comes out fast Cons - LACK OF FLAVOR, almost everything was overcooked,

Rey Azteca is Butler's premier Mexican resturant. I know that isn't really saying much, but somehow in the past 3 years there's been a proliferation of Mexican restaurants in town. Used to be that your choices were Chi Chi's or Taco Bell. That's definitely changed. Rey's was the first (that I know of) of the family owned restaurants in town. Pros: Spanish-speaking servers, excellent food, Mr. Pibb, rather inexpensive, take-out. Cons: not enough people know about this place, it's a little small on the inside, the fried ice cream is merely ok. I would really give it 4.5 stars, but this will have to make do.

  • Pat R.

It's not bad, but there is no other Mexican restaurant in butler so I can't hate it much. I've be to other restaurants in other states and this one doesn't even compare, the guacamole is horrible, the salsa is bland and has no spice to it. I've only been here 2 times in the last 4 years, I only went back because my wife is pregnant and wanted Mexican food. And the prices suck. Your better off making your own.

Great food! unlike the others that claim to be from Texas, I lived in New Mexico and this food is comparable to what you will find out west. Best you will get in the area.

    (5)
  • David B.

Truly awful; food tastes like it's microwaved. Of course there's absolutely no flavor; your average local detests any kind of real spice. Wadded down with disgusting "cream" sauces that would be better on s.o.s. I have tried to like this place, have been there 6 times over the years, but no more.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
