The Phoenix catered my wedding reception in Altoona and my mother and I couldn't have been happier. Chef Kurtis' food was awesome- especially the salmon rolls and his homemade hummus. Who knew you could get homemade hummus in Altoona?! And the salmon rolls were such a hit, I had people stealing them off my plate! Cathy worked the reception and was so warm, attentive, and thoughtful. She was so concerned that my husband and I wouldn't get a bite to eat that she saved a small plate of the salmon rolls for us just in case. After speaking to several caterers in the area, we were so happy we ended up going with the Phoenix- they were so easy to work with, Cathy was incredible, and the food was outstanding.

What a great little restaurant in Altoona. Took my 3 kids and wife and had a great time. Inside has been updated and menu was great. Stuffed perch was delicious.

We have been here twice in two months and have been wowed each time! My husband and I remember going here about 10+ years ago when it had a real supper club vibe and the food was tired and heavy. The new owners--and new chef--have really turned this around as the remodel and new menu are fantastic. There are many vegan and gluten free options, and if you want them to "veganize" your selection, they will!

We used to really live this place but it has been going downhill. We had several just ok times. Tonight we ate there. My daughters chicken was very under cooked ( it was semi bloody in a few spots) Sent it back and it came out clearly microwaved and rubbery. She refused to eat it rightly so. My husbands fish was burnt on one side cold in the middle and his side was lukewarm at best. My entree was just ok, I took a few bites and honestly after testing my daughters chicken had lost my appetite. Our waiter, while friendly, was absent 80% of the time and we had to ask repeatedly for things missing from our meals, despite us being his only table. Sadly as much as we have enjoyed the Phoenix in the past we will not be returning.

My wife and I were visiting Altoona recently and we met friends at the revamped Phoenix. The last time we were there prior to the new ownership it was a somewhat uninviting place. It was dark with an oldtime decor including what were uncomfortable chairs and dated tables. Wow, have things changed. Now it's well lit with natural light coming in from large glass block windows which were exposed in the renovation and the light colored walls and trim are a huge improvement. These changes wouldn't mean much if the food were mediocre or worse but little worry...the plates we ordered were wonderful. We shared the risotto balls, perfectly fried zucchini and the watermelon salad..all excellent. My wife had the baked haddock which is one of their premier dishes and I had pork milanese...can recommend both. Overall, any city would be very fortunate to have a restaurant of this quality. We're anxious to return!

My wife and I had been to the Phoenix roughly 15 yrs ago. The food was good then but dark and smokey. Now it is very bright and very clean. The food was OUTSTANDING. We had 2 appetizers, drunken mushrooms and crab stuffed mushrooms(yes we like mushrooms). My wife had the spinach salad with beets and gorg. cheese and sliced apples. She loved it. I had the house special crab stuffed salmon with shrimp also 2 sides VERY GOOD. The only issue was the newspaper ran a special article in the paper that day and they were swamped so service was slower then I would have liked BUT the staff they had were hustling to make up for being shorthanded. Michele Lepore the manager was busting her Butt to make sure things were running as smoothly as possible as well. Would highly recommend for any dinner occasion.

What a nice surprise we had tonight! The restaurant is located in the middle of a residential neighborhood, but there is a bright red (neonish?) sign lit up out front. There is only street parking, that I'm aware of. We followed an older couple in an they stopped close to the door, as there isn't much of a large waiting area. One of the waitresses seated them and soon us, and the couple that arrived shortly after us. They asked us if we had reservations, which you can do via telephone per the website. Next time I go, I will make reservations. After we were seated the waitress got our drink orders and laid down some very crispy baked penne pasta to snack on. We ordered the Crispy risotto balls with prosciutto and mozzarella, served over some marinara sauce. These balls were huge, as an appetizer, I could've used this as a meal. They came out nice and hot, and quickly cooled after quartering it and scraping up some marinara to put over each piece. They were very good, since there were two of us, we should have stopped eating at one each but we both at two. The only thing I with I could've changed is the amount of prosciutto inside each one. I can never get enough, so I don't fault the chef. For a group of four this app would be perfect. As we waited for our food I don't recall receiving a drink menu or wine list. We could see about three beers on tap, as well as a wine bottle and martini on the table next to us. We were going to drink afterwards so we didn't tempt ourselves by asking for a menu. The regular entre items, average price about 17.5, seemed interesting, but it was hard to turn down the specials we saw first, especially because there was no price listed. We ended up with the specials grilled marlin and the crab & shrimp stuffed salmon. Both were great but I did have food envy for the stuffed salmon. It came with a zucchini quiche that we very much enjoyed.

they are now open for lunch on Thursday and Friday from 11am-2pm. We just ate here for the first time since the new ownership took over and we were totally impressed. They did an awesome job of opening up the dining and bar area. The food was excellent. Everything is very fresh and many of the spices, etc. come from their garden - soon the veggies will be coming from their own garden as well. The baked tomato soup was great and the baked mac and cheese was amazing. Our meals were excellent as well. We ate from the lunch menu but the dinner menu looks great and they also have a Sunday brunch menu which had some pretty amazing breakfast items. Definitely recommend The Phoenix. Don't let the outside of the building fool ya this place is a gem!

We enjoyed our meals here and will be going back from time to time. This place is under new ownership and they are trying to keep old customers (and make new ones as well) so that is why you will see the old standbys of baked haddock, chicken parm, etc. on the menu. We ordered some specials and thought they were well prepared and tasty. The guys running the kitchen here are good and the food seemed thoughtfully prepared and well seasoned. The deserts are also made on premises and we enjoyed ours very much. I hope to see them expand the menu going forward as it is rather limited, but you will find a good meal here. Definitely worth checking out...!

Had great hopes for this recently reopened Altoona staple restaurant. Saturday night was busy and the staff was obviously overwhelmed, although the owner was unaware or unconcerned, hanging out at the bar the entire time. The remodel shed the tired old look of the previous Phoenix and its bright and modern and clean, nice. That said, once seated you can't help but notice the extreme, noise level, acoustics were not considered in the redesign. Four of us dining, we waited a very long time for our drinks, finally two arrived and we waited even longer for the remaining red wine and gin and tonic,, Again, the owner sitting at the bar. The menu was mostly populated with Altoona standards like baked haddock, spaghetti with meatball, chicken parm, etc. Our server lacked even a minimum knowledge of the menu and the food. When I order prime rib medium I was told "it's all done the same" which anyone knows is impossible. After placing our order she soon returned to our table informing me that the prime was not available and I needed to select another item "quickly so I can turn in your order". The food was ok, accuracy was a bit of a problem. I'll try it again in a couple months, mainly to see if the owner cares as much about my experience as I do.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
