The previous reviews are spot-on! What this place is NOT.... neither white-linen dining nor chain-like (think Bravo)... what it IS... the closest thing you will find to an authentic trattoria somewhere in the mountains of Abruzzi... COMPLETELY unpretentious, and solid, FRESH food made-to-order. The location.... don't be put off by the Aliquippa address. This is actually in "West Aliquippa", which while technically a part of Aliquippa borough, is physically detached (about mid-way between Aliquippa proper, and Monaca). It's a fading, but safe neighborhood with quite a history (in the not-too-distant past it was almost completely surrounded by the giant J&L steel mill). The kitchen and dining room are literally attached to the owner's and chef's house. You WILL feel like you were invited to their home for dinner. Mary (the chef) seems to do everything, from making pasta from scratch, to cooking, waiting on tables, and I assume clean-up, all without any apparent help. So expect a very leisurely Italian pace for dinner, closer to 2 hours than one. You'll need the time anyway, so much food arrives at your table. Mary's father actually produces his own prosciutto , which you must try! AND, he makes his own wine from Pennsylvania grapes! (I'll admit to being skeptical of the wine, but it was actually very pleasant and a good match for the food.) (I had a bottle in the car because you can also BYOB, but I left it there) Fresh Bread (baked by Mary, of course) was excellent. We had excellent gnocchi (very light), homemade (literally) meat ravioli, excellent stuffed banana peppers, and some of the best tiramisu that I've ever had, and I've had it EVERYwhere (including all over Italy). Do yourself a favor and try this for a dining experience that is fast disappearing in the USA... a TRUE neighborhood, authentic ethnic place where the owners obviously care about quality and pleasing you. Oh, make sure you call ahead, and it is CASH only! (TIP: if you are using a GPS, make sure you enter Main AVE, not Main STREET)

Great Italian food with homestyle cooking in West Aliquippa. It is a pop & daughter shop with interesting dialog from colorful characters. You feel as if you are eating with family. The veal parmesan, pasta fagoli and home made spaghetti noodles were all winners. This restaurant is open by reservation only. You must call Mary and leave a message with the time you wish to reserve. The owners live in the 2nd floor of the house above the restaurant. Prices are reasonable in the $10 - $15 range. Be sure to get directions.

We're always looking for something new to try, and being from Hopewell I don't know how I've never heard of this place. But after seeing some reviews online, we had to try it out. When we arrived we went to the front door which opens into the kitchen, side dining room area. The place was empty, and we weren't sure if they were open. We started to leave when I heard, over here come on in. We met Mary who showed us around and made us feel at home. I guess they don't get a lot of business because of the location, but don't let that stop you from trying it. If you're going with a large group, give Mary a call first for a heads up. This really is just a two person operation! Everything we ate was delicious. We started off with the prosciutto and cheese plate and for dinner I had the Chicken Romano and my other half had the Zucchini parm with home made gnocchi. Even the bread and wine is homemade, in house! One other review I read hits the nail on the head, it feels more like you were invited over to a friends house for dinner rather than going to a restaurant. I can't say enough good things. We will certainly be back!

I couldn't believe this place was open, given its location and faded sign. After eating there, I can't believe my group was the only one there! Try the sausage, the meatballs, the stuffed peppers, the chicken parm...

This place is definitely a hidden gem. You would never even see it there if you weren't looking for it. Everything we had was great! Started with the prosciutto platter and stuffed hot peppers. Both awesome. Main courses were all pasta and all were good. Tiramisu was the best I've ever had. We will be back for sure!

Found this place by accident. Was searching web for another spot and saw "Rossi Winery" on margin of web page. Not knowing or hearing about the place I decided to GOOGLE for more info. Other reviews sounded interesting, so I decided to give it a shot. Called on a Friday to make reservation for Saturday. Spoke to Mary, who apologized, saying the place was closed for a private party. Mary said we could come in on Sunday, so I made a reservation. After making the reservation, I realized that they were closed on Sundays. I called back, and Mary said that it was fine---c'mon in Sunday. See you then. Sunday evening came, and my wife and I figured that others had also hoped to dine on Sat. but switched to Sunday. We were wrong---we were the ONLY people seated that evening. It could not have been more enjoyable. Mary is the waitress AND the cook. Started with the prosciutto/cheese plate. Had stuffed peppers, chicken romano, potato gnocci---everything was fresh and homemade--and excellent! While we were enjoying our meal. Mary's dad (John) came in, introduced himself with a couple glasses of wine. He joined us at the table for an hour! We went thru another bottle of wine- enjoying John's interesting take on winemaking, olive oil, and prosciutto. Absolutely two of the most enjoyable hours we have ever had in a restaurant. So---Mary opened the place up to us even though we were the only customers---on her day off; Mary could not have been more gracious and down to earth; her food was homemade and delicious; and her Dad was interesting as hell. Can't say enough good things about the whole experience. DO yourself a favor---CHECK IT OUT.

Love this place. The epitome of Mom and Pop. Best gnocchi I may have ever had. And it's my go-to order at any new Italian joint. If your tired of the chains, this is your place.

Great basic Italian food. Recommend the Chicken Romano, linguine with clam sauce, prosciutto and cheese platter, fried zucchini. Gnocchi are very nice as well... not too heavy. Good homemade wine as well. Call ahead... it is a true mom and pop operation. Very friendly and relaxed... Great place to go for catching up with old friends. Highly recommend.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
