We had been driving along the coast looking for fresh seafood-not fried fish-which is what we found at most places. We came to Griff's and saw the seafood case and knew we found our spot. We had Rockfish last year -which was amazing. This year we had the clam strips-very good with big pieces of clam. The clam strips are also very good with big pieces of clam-not fresh but still good. The Rockfish were not in season-it was J0une 22 and was too early. The cod fish and chips-is lightly breaded and tender. Not what you think of when you hear fish and chips. It came with seasoned French fries were crisp on outside and soft inside and cole slaw was surprisingly light and not loaded down with mayo. The tartar sauce was light with dill and a small amount of dill pickle (which I read about before but didn't think I'd like but LOVE) Service has been good and friendly. The restaurant is decorated appropriately with sea faring items that are handmade by the owner. We will definitely be back!

Loved this place. We were on our way to Bandon beach and stopped for lunch. It was fun looking out at the water. If the weather is nice they have outdoor seating as well. All 4 of our lunches were excellent prawns and scallops for me. The cole slaw is some of the best I have ever had. Wait staff was very friendly.

The cioppino was full of seafood and was one of the best soups I have eaten. The shrimp were lightly breaded and amazing. The fried fish had the same light reading and was good. Will come back here some day.

Get the Dungeness crab ... it's not on the menu, but ask. Ours was 25.00 and came with a nice salad and garlic bread. Crab was delicious!

Breading on the fish is amazing! Chowder bread bowls are awesome as well. Excellent service. Well worth the trip to Winchester Bay!

Was in nearby Coos Bay and really wanted Dungeness crab, unfortunately there were no places in town with them because it wasn't crab season. Fortunately griffs had them so we drove there. Huge crabs, my relatives got crab Louies which came with generous portions of crab. I got the whole crab which I couldn't finish, it was delicious and priced well. The lone waitress was quick, friendly and attentive. The other reviews critiquing its cleanliness etc are asinine. It's a mom and pop joint on the water, what the heck did you expect, a Ruth's Chris???? If I was back home in pretentious D.C. I'd understand, but this is coastal oregon, check your ego at the door and suck it up.

Great and fresh seafood! The chowder is amazing and the food always tastes fresh! The breading is a "secret recipe" as it should be! Very full of flavor! Wish I could've bought some to take home. If you've never been here its a must try! Service was fast and friendly. Will definitely be coming back!

We ended up here while looking for a place to eat dinner. Ice cold beer, and served with a frozen mug!! Went down great after a long work day. The steak was good, and you get plenty of butter and sour cream for your baked potato. My coworkers had excellent food as well, including fish and chips, oysters, and grilled halibut. Great little dive restaurant on the bay!

Not so much. It was busy, but they appeared to be fully staffed. We were told five times by three different people that someone would be right with us. Thanks, but maybe after the third time, someone could have actually helped us? Instead we watched a very sweaty, flustered looking fellow fill water glasses from the tap. Un. Appetizing. We came for chowder. You could taste the roux and very few clams. More like a creamy potato chowder without the cream. Had a few bites, tried to dress it up up with salt, pepper and Tapatio but refused to finish it. Not even the side of cheese-y bread (the cheese had separated) could save it. So as it turns out, there is something that cheese can't fix. The crab cocktail was just crab, so there was no screwing that up but there was shell in it. The Shrimp Louie salad was okay after being dressed up with thousand island. Travelling with a one year old who had soaked herself while waiting for the bill, someone just had to go take care of her while the others hunted down the waitress and paid.

We stopped for a bowl of chowder and were a bit disappointed. Not many clams. Lukewarm. Mediocre flavor. Mediocre service. Will try another place next time.

The chowder was awesome. My wife who doesn't particularly like chowder tried mine and I made her order her own as she was about to devour my entire cup. The staff was courteous and very attentive. The view of the bay was really nice.

Horrible food. Chowder came to the table cold so my husband sent it back and they microwaved it. Ahi was supposed to be very rare and came back completely cook all the way through. Restaurant is run down and dirty. Bathroom was filthy. The 7 of us will not be back

The food was fine, I actually liked the "breading," which was really more of a dusting of spice and maybe a little flour. It was a little greasy, but I did get calamari and prawns with fries. The waitress was very sweet, and the view was great - lots of windows. I don't think it was anything to write home about, but it was just fine for an impromptu trip to the coast.

We have been coming here for years and the food is always great. The fish is super fresh, the cioppino is delicious, the crab cocktail wonderful. The beer is ice cold and comes with a frosty mug. Great service and a beautiful view. I saw some negative reviews and it really surprised me- this was always such a favorite place to bring family and friends. Give it a try- you will be glad you did!

1st time here and we were all very happy with our food & the customer service. I had a delicious crab cocktail & chowder. All very fresh tasting. We will be back next year for sure!

The food arrived quickly but..... Whole place smelled bad. Water glasses tasted like dish soap. Chowder tasted like gelatinous flour, not even a remotely seafood taste to it. I too have had the pleasure of trying chowder all over the country and I too award this the worst ever, I wouldnt even call it potato chowder, it could be called Flour Chowder. The fish and chips and the halibut are both FROZEN and TOUGH (at 12 and 16 a plate). Prices are outrageous for what you get (food and dining). I'm still wondering why we stayed at all. Usually I assume if the restaurant is on the water the seafood will be fresh (and since the sign says so too) but I was wrong. Go to the Crabby Cafe. I have never been but ended up at griffs twice only because it was full with a line at the crabby, probably for good reason.

This place is a memory I'd like to repress as quickly as possible. Are negative stars possible?

Wife and I stopped here for lunch on our way back to PDX from Gold Beach. None of the local restaurants had anything above a 3.5 star review, so we stopped here not expecting too much. We had oyster shooters that were fresh, mild and huge. Excellent! They were from Charleston. I had the fish and chips which was also excellent. Lightly battered cod that was moist and flaky. The chips were lightly seasoned, crisp on the outside and creamy on the inside. Denise had the halibut fish and chips that she praised, but I wouldn't have traded it for the cod. Good cole slaw. Nothing pretentious, just the best lunch I've had in recent memory. Great view of the docks and headland to the south. I don't understand the comments about service, I thought it was fine, everything that we needed. Highly recommended!

Stopped by to get crab bait! It was frozen, but it thawed pretty quickly. It was a cute shop with knick knacks and candies. I wish i could have tried their food! I ate the crab that we caught though. Convenient place and good people.

Very nice staff and the food was good. I got the crab louie salad and my wife got the halibut. The restaurant decor could use a makeover, but the location right on the water is fantastic.

Speaking as someone who's had the pleasure of sampling clam chowder all over the country, Griff's Clam Chowder was the absolute worst I've ever tasted. April R. was being generous when she said it was below average. That, or it's only gotten worse in the past year. Not only was it bland, it was much too thick, the potatoes were over cooked and the clams were far and few between. My wife's bowl of Cioppino was more of a thin bland soup than it was a stew and the fish was conspicuous by it's absence. It was really hard to understand all of this because my crab and cheese sandwich was very good and just loaded with fresh crab and the homemade coleslaw was excellent. Prices are reasonable, service is good, atmosphere is... Well, what do you expect? Its a fresh catch seafood joint on the bay!

Had lunch here yesterday and after being here four or five times in the past five years , this visit was rather disappointing. The staff is friendly if not a bit slow. I realize it was a busy weekend day for them with the Art By The Bay Event, (which by the way was also disappointing), but we've had MUCH better food here.

My family was on vacation over Labor day and stopped in for dinner since it was one of the few restaurants open that night. We had to wait about 30 minutes to be seated and had to stand the whole time. Once we were seated it took another 20 minutes for the waitress to take our order. The waitress came back several minutes later to tell my wife that they were out of swordfish and mac n cheese so we had to change our orders. When my wife's salmon arrived (her new choice) it was raw on the inside. The last straw was when they brought the bill they charged us the full price for the salmon dinner (not what my wife wanted but what she had to change to because of being out of swordfish and being told significantly later.) They did change the bill to reflect the price of the swordfish plate but I should not have had to ask them to do this. We will never-ever eat here again!

Winchester Bay is a working class real fishing town. Griff's is a restaurant, not for tourists, but for these locals. Basically, it is an overgrown fish shack on the docks trying to be just a little nice wirthout putting on airs and offending the locals. It was the end of a long day and we were looking for just this kind of "down home" place. We arrived late on a mid-week evening. Winchester as a town seemed dead. We went to Griff's andf it was packed. Had to wait for a table. The food was worth the wait. Ambience can best be described as "local color." Paper napkins on formica, plastic glasses. Wine list with a number of lower-end offerings. So we chose a cheap white and waited for our fish, locally caught. It was great. Cooked just as we had asked (pan grilled without breading). Came with fries and slaw -- nothing to exclaim over but in the good ordianry area. We had a waterside table and watched the birds and heard the fish jumping. For the middle of nowhere along the Oregon coast, a very pleasant evening.
