Standard McMenamins service and food. Had a good lunch today with friends. I got the Thai chicken sandwich which was pretty good. Chicken was a bit dry but had nice flavor. The salad was crispy and fresh which went great with the sandwich. Not a bad meal.

My wife and I decided to drive down from Portland and stop in Salem to get our stamps for our Passports. Cortney was friendly, informative, and thoughtful!! She gave us great tips for our experience. She made our day! :) Thank you Cortney. You rock!

Last Sunday place is 1/4 full about 1pm. Waited 20min for water. Waited another 50 min for food. Greasy blob of cheese and dripping bacon (yeah I know I shouldn't expect healthy in a 'bar' but this was on the level of the heart attack grill. Waited another 20 for the check. This was in the middle of my workday with two employees. Will not be going back. Very frustrating experience.

(5/19/15 2:00pm) **RACIST** We are a brown skinned couple that stopped in to have a drink. So when we got there one other table in the whole place the waitress took their order, in the mean time a couple tables show up and I noticed the waitress taking orders before she even greeted us. So we finally ordered our drinks and waited while the waitress served drinks to the new customers and that was it for us we headed out the door I definitely will not be back and I will spend my hard earned money somewhere where it is appreciated. Let me add we have been to many many Mcmenamins and never have been treated like this we are very disappointed. I called to talk to management after we left and management acted like it was my fault. Yeah alright won't get my business no more.

Boon's is my favorite McMenamins Pub. My husband and I stop by for beers and food probably 1-3 times every week. While service may be hit or miss, it's never been bad as I've experienced at other McMenamins locations. We tend to sit at the bar when we visit if their is a seat available. This has allowed us to get to know the staff as well. We love that their is free live music during the week and have seen some great acts come through. Being Passport holders has allowed us to visit many different McMenamins pubs. I'm probably just playing favorites but I think the Cooks at Boon's know how to make a burger how you want it (thank you Sabrina!). We were totally jealous when we visited some of the Portland pubs with their extensive menus. Some of the burgers we had in a few Portland pubs were well done and overcooked, some totally dry even though we asked for "a little pink". Here's hoping Boons will be able to add some additional sandwhiches and other choices to their menu real soon.

Saw Left Coast Country here a few weeks ago. This is a typical McMenamins type of place with all the wacky trinkets and art on the wall. The place was of a decent size but filled with everyone and thier dog in there that night. LCC always fills the place. We got here in time for the show and met a friend here. We had some of the tator tots but were already full from ordering some from another Mc Menamins. I loved this little place and hope I rememeber to return when I'm in Salem again. I don't know that we will, don't frequent that area much but it's always great to go in and see a new one of these and what they have done with the place. Overall a nice place to visit and have drinks / dinner

This place brings me back. This was one of my favorite places to chill out and relax during college. I had my first craft beer here. I had my first scotch here. I just loved coming in the crisp autumn evenings to have some grub and take in a local band or musician. The service here has always been hit or miss. You never know what you are going to get. The food, while relatively basic, I have always found solid. I especially like their shoestring fries- though I will admit they may not be everyone's cup of tea. Overall, I really enjoy the nostalgia and localness that Boon's gives me. I say give it a shot if you are in the area.

Food good and reliable, interesting and good chicken artichoke soup. Wait for the food felt lengthy, but our server was attentive about refilling our drinks while we waited.

Small space, not a lot of seating unless you want to be outside. Parking is a challenge. Lots of burgers but not a lot of low carb options. Fabulous tots. Great Happy Hour. Plenty of beer choices.

Price = 3 Experience = 3 Beers only... once again, I've not been impressed with the McMenamins spots I've been to... the staff is not well managed.

No nitro:( service took forever. The waitress was very apologetic and nice, but I feel the reviews from this versus Thompsons should be reversed.

Yes, the service is slow. That is a McMenamins thing. I'm not sure why, and it doesn't bother me since I have come to except that from them. That being said, I've never had a stressed out or rude wait staff, just a bit air-headed. I've had a few good food specials here, but mostly the food is subpar. The beer is great however, and the reason I rated them highly is that their outside seating area is a hidden treasure. With the high surrounding bushes, you can barely tell that you're on a main street. At night, the hanging lights and lit firepits add to the ambiance. Grab a table outside and give it a try for a drink sometime.

Awesome beer, great service (Juan Pablo, you know who you are) TATER TOTS, amazing ketchup and great atmosphere. I love this place

The location of McMenamin's Boons Treasury is not exactly ideal. The parking lot is very small and street parking is a little nerve racking, as it is on two rather busy streets. Once you get past that situation and on to the actual pub, it gets better. The old building has a lot of character. Brick, stone, and timber make for a really nice cozy feeling. I prefer when I can snatch up a booth, though sitting outside in the summer is also great if it's warm enough. Live bands play on certain nights, but the inside can become so loud that you have to sit outside if you want to have any chance at conversation at all. I love the stuffed burger-of-the-day, which rotates every so often. The best one being a bleu cheese and bacon burger that I had once a few years ago, and have not seen since (though I am not exactly a regular and just show up randomly every so often). I know I get into a war with some people over this: but I am NOT a fan of the natural style fries, I think they are tasteless and limp. So, I get the tater tots and shake some vinegar on them. Table service is pretty reliable; I don't recall ever having a terrible wait for a drink refill or food request. I have seen a lot of the help come and go, so turnover appears to be pretty high. Not that I think that effects things one way or another, just a little something I've noticed over time. A pretty good choice for grabbing a brew or two in Salem if you want to avoid a straight up bar or feel like you must order a meal by going to an actual restaurant. If you do go, and like light beers (my personal favorite) get the Kolsh, it is fantastic. Now if only they would serve it more than a couple months out of the year....

And then they fell! Seems that the service level has gone back to McMenamin's standard slow service. This is a shame but not unexpected. Alas, it was fun while it lasted.

I stopped into this McMenamin's location, the Boon's Treasury, for lunch. Once again, this is another McMenamin's location that was refurbished from another use for the building and made into its own. As always, kudos for McMenamin's for that. I'm also a fan of the kitschy way they design their interiors as well. As for the food, I found it to be very tasty. I tried the spinach and artichoke dip for an appetizer, of which I am a fan of. I also had the Communication Breakdown Burger, which features cheese, mushrooms, onions and peppers, as well as the burger. Being able to order a small garden salad as my side was also a plus. I'd come here again.

Stopped for a late lunch. I had lentil soup. It was OK but not hot, just warm. It took awhile to bring four orders so I didn't want to wait again. Simple decor, exposed brick..a little chilly for me. Turn up the heat, it's December and 30° outside. I can only comment on my meal, but bring your breath mints... Red onions galore on everything. I guess you can always drink beer. :)

Don't go here if your identification card is bent; they won't serve you. True story.

I usually LOVE McM's, and I go to the locations in Roseburg, Corvallis and Portland all the time when I travel. But this one was a wee bit disappointing. The food was yummy, but it took 45 minutes to get to us. Even a beer order took 20 minutes. Our server was nice, but inappropriately attired. I will keep going to other McM's, but I might wait a year before returning to this one so they can get their act together.

Stopped in for happy hour on a Saturday night with 2 friends and was seated right away. We even asked if we could play a board game we brought with us while we ate and they didn't have a problem with it! I was happy with my burger & fries considering the happy hour pricing but I'm not sure I would return & pay regular menu prices for what I ordered. However the building has it's usual McMenamins charm and the staff is attentive so I'm sure I'll be back for another happy hour!

Go to this place for the atmosphere as McMenamins has done an excellent job in restoring old buildings.

Same Ole McMenamins. Every pub is the same. Same ole tired menu. Same ole beer selections thats not too deep. Same ole NW Kitch ambiance. Having said that, its always a good spot to visit. Surprisingly good burger for the center of the meatless scene. The one with blue cheese and bacon is killer. Fries are so bad they should not be on the menu. So limp and spongy they need a prescription of Cialis. Would have given it 3.5 stars if their IPA was worthy. I swore it was a ESB. Took too long for this McMenamins to recognize the need for double IPAs. And when they did, it must of been out of protest they made a mild one.

Boon's Treasury is our go-to place for dinner when we want great atmosphere, good food and friendly service. The wait staff is always friendly and remembers regulars. A good dinner to try is Maria's Masterpiece, which always satisfies! With some cajunized tots on the side and a little horseradish sauce for dipping, I've got one of my favorites of all time.

  • Dian C.

I've gotta say, the last three times I've eaten lunch at Boon's Treasury, I've been quite disappointed. I won't be eating there again. The food selection is small, the delivery slow, cleanliness questionhable, and what should be hot is often cold. It may be that I've mostly looked at Boon's as a lunch place, when I should think of it as a middlin' bar. Then again, Boon's may think itself a lunch spot, it which case, it needs to raise the bar or forget it. The staff is friendly, though.

I hate playing the race card but SERIOUSLY, I felt like me and my friend got treated like 2nd class citizens because we were not white. It felt like everyone else got better service. The story begins like this, my friend wanted to treat me to dinner so we choose boon's. I knew the parking was going to be an issue. There is 8 parking spots and parking on a busy sidewalk. We walked from the marion parkade. (3 blocks) Upon arriving at the front door, we were not greeted by anyone or took care by any wait staff. (At this point the restaurant had 5 people that were just enjoying their meals) . I had to ask if we should seat ourselves or not. I mean if it is going to be a seat yourself restaurant, at least put a sign out. Fast forward, we sat at a table with nothing, yes not even menus for 7 minutes. A guy comes by, drops off menus, and ask us what to drink. I told him water. Today was freaking hot, I just wanted some ice water to cool down. The ice water came like another 15 minutes. We then got order, and it took like 20 minutes. Some lady drop off our food. Then the waitress/waiter never came back for a hour plus. Our water was never refill. Please correct me if I am wrong. I saw the wait staff bring the tabs to people's table. My friend had to go up and wait in front of the bar to pay our bill. It probably took us another 10 minutes to get our bill. The waitress/waiter was just busy making drinks.....OK.... This place is either a) understaff b) hires mediocre staff c) just lacks of potential Random info: - Since this place is in a 'historic' building, the location itself is not disable friendly. To access bathrooms, you have to go up 4 steps of stairs. The bathrooms were narrow too. This is my unpleasant experience at Boon's.

Stopped in for a drink- and maybe a snack- watched one table leave as there food hadn't come yet- I was seated at the bar and it was pretty obvious that the food hadn't been started yet as you have a clear view into the kitchen- I ordered a Tanqueray and tonic-- (yeah, I know it is a beer place but . . .) and the young lady behind the bar had no idea what that was- "the manager or someone who has gone to the classes has to make the mixed drinks" so finally after ten minutes at the bar I had a drink served- I passed on food after watching the level of service- at one point the manager even told the staff to stop answering the phone- they obviously didn't want anyone else coming in- and they weren't that busy- it was pretty pathetic. I work in the area and a coworker told me not to go but I went any way . . . should have listened to him- I won't be back

YES! I finally get to write a review instead of read one! I happen to love this "place" I can't define it as a restaurant, pub, bar, home? If you ever have a free afternoon, Boons is the place to go and relax. Maybe live music will play? Maybe you'll meet a local regular just getting off work! Although im not an expert on food, I have not been let down by my order. Just know what your walking into is my advice. I have always heard of people complain about the food here, YET my own mother wanted to come on Mother's Day because they serve up such good food such as buffalo burgers. My advice? Judge for yourself... If you dislike this "place" You'll most likely dislike myself as well

I love these old buildings that McMenamin's buys and restores. This one is particularly cool, especially on the inside. It's quaint and comfortable. I ordered the French Quarter chicken sandwich and it was very tasty. It was a little bit spicy hot, but I would have rather it was a little spicier. Nonetheless, it was delicious. I ordered the sandwich with fries and they are really good too, but they weren't piping hot -- instead they were just warm. We wanted to order McMenamin's home-brewed root beer but, sadly, the waitress said they don't do that anymore. She wasn't sure if it was just at that location or all of McMenamin's. PLEASE tell me they still make their own root beer! My wife will post her own review I'm sure. Her fries were cold and she sent them back to be reheated. The waitress said she'd only been there for a couple of days, but she did a great job waiting and checking on us. I would have given this visit 5 stars, but the wait for food was ridiculous. Fortunately we were with good company and enjoying ourselves chatting. The waitress said they were inundated with orders so it was taking longer than usual to get them out. However, I looked around and there were very few people there (a total of 6 or 7). Maybe they were all crammed in a back patio somewhere?

  • Tila M.

I believe that they must have only waitstaff filling this out if they have an average of 4 stars! This place sucks! The beer is expensive, the food just so-so and the waitstaff (when you can find one) seemed annoyed that you have chosen to: A) eat there B) want a table and C) have the audacity to speak directly to them. The fact that I have been here more than once only helps to prove my mothers point that I crave emotionally abusive relationships.

I just read some of the reviews below mine, and it seems like everyone dislikes the service. But my experience was just fine. Our waiter was friendly, and our service was good. I ordered the veggie sandwich. It was soooo good. I like the atmosphere of this McMenamin's. They all have a cool atmosphere, but this one is extra cool. Super rustic. There is also good live music on Friday nights.

I drove by this place many times as a kid growing up in Salem and I didn't know it was now a McMenamins until my most recent trip. They have burgers, sandwiches, wraps, salads, soups and hot dogs similar to other McMenamins, as well as their delicious beers! They do $8 growler fills on Mondays. The outdoor brick patio is adorable and you'd never know you were in between two busy downtown streets. They make their own veggie burgers and actually have two varieties on the menu. But their French fries are my personal favorite - hand cut and perfectly salted. It would be fun to check out their live music offerings. There's a great old tale about John Fahey peeing in the parking lot of this place long ago and I bet there are even better stories I haven't heard yet.

I think they might have a problem with racism. I'm not one to call people out on this but I can't think of any other reason we were treated so poorly by all but one employee there. Sat down and ordered, food and drinks were prompt then nothing.......no one ever came back to check on us, inquire about refills, etc. We had to request our bill twice by going inside to get it. All the while I watched servers come to the other table outside several times. The only different about us is my husband is Indian. Too bad since I have raved about my experiences at other mcmenamins to him. Epic fail boons treasury

I love all McMenamins. Seriously, Rarely am I ever disppointed. I particularly love the tots. the tots are my jam. I will say, parking here sucks. and thats about all that does. I also am not very well versed in the booze selection, as Im not a frequent drinker there, but I hear its divine!

Went here Friday night for food and live music. I must admit it was a great evening. Love the ambiance. Nice servers who aren't around to often to feel like they are hovering. Relaxing and entertaining.

I Gave this place another chance. Even more horrible than the previous experience. Had my 2 year daughter with me. We waited (literally) over 50 minutes before our food arrived and that was after asking several times. They finally took us seriously when my daughter said, "yummies, eat, hungie (hungry)". The food was great but as usual mcminnamins failed to deliver good customer service and timely food.

  • Patrick C.

Kinda disappointing. The waiter said the "house" specials were good. So I ordered the 11.00 dollar nachos. It came in a little cereal bowl. Yup 11.00 worth of nachos in a little cereal bowl. They were disappointing to say the least. Service was slow to boot.

  • Steven M.

Leslie rocks! She's the only reason left to go to Boons. And if she went somewhere else, I'd go there instead. But that being said, she isn't, and I'll miss her. The same tired bands, the same tired food, the same pitifully tired staff. It ain't the 90s anymore, and Mcs didn't get the memo. Cold food and warm beer. McMenamins has 99 problems but my cash ain't one.

    (2)
  • Michael B.

I will probably not come back to this restaurant again. The reason being was the hamburger buns were like hockey pucks and super dry. The meat was not cooked to order, and the fries were cold. The beer is the big disappointment because it has steadily declined in quality maybe because they took the beer off of fermentation to early, or because the lines were dirty. Who can say. So I know is I'm really disappointed.

Food was pretty good. Service very slow and mediocre. Don't see reason to return if visiting Salem in the future. Not up to par with other McMenamins locations IMO.

What a great atmosphere. . Sat at the bar, it was great watching the kitchen staff work so good together, as well as the servers all working together. Scott our server was great, very attentive and friendly..

So this is a McMenamins like any other. Old-world pub style decor, dark inside, usual selection of beverages. The food is your standard McMenamins food, in terms of quality, but I have to say; this location underwhelms me more than pretty much any other I've been to, food-wise. Their happy hour menu is pretty diverse, like most locations, but my big gripe (I guess my only one in this case) is that rather than serve a 1/4lb burger like most other locations, they do a cheeseburger slider for $4.50. Just one, and it's....pretty miniscule. The bread looks either freshly-baked or purchased from a local bakery, because, due to a waiter error, I saw two different versions of the burger and both times the buns had their own odd eccentricities. So thumbs up on that. But it's the little things that add up. It always seems very hard to get quick service unless you're a regular (I've seen several of them in on the times I've stopped by). On this last visit, I sat down, the waiter saw me enter, but spent a good three or four minutes talking to the young, single lady in the booth across from me. I imagine they were friends, but she had her food and drink and he was just hanging out. When ordering, I ordered the above-mentioned slider "Plain, nothing on it, just cheese," which is what my childhood-stuck tastes run to with cheeseburgers. When I got it, it had added mayonnaise, which I absolutely detest. When I finally got my waiter's attention, he said, "Oh, you didn't want that either? See, we say 'plain and dry' for that, and I didn't tell him dry." Well, since I always order the same way, each and every time, I thought I was pretty clear with "NOTHING ON IT." Not a huge deal, it was remade, but it's the little things. Like how same waiter told me at 4:00, "I'm about to leave, so the other server will be taking your table." Yet when I left around 4:45, he was still running around taking people's orders. Little things. Or some past visits, less specific, when we've had to ask twice for utensils, or waiting around to order another round. The food itself is the usual quality, generally pretty good, and the beer is always great. This location has a stage and does live music four or five nights a week and always has local bands scheduled, so that's a good thing. Like I said, nothing is really a huge deal-breaker, I just felt very underwhelmed with this location. Oh well. I did get a cool Halfway to St. Paddy's Day stamp for my Passport though.

Boon's is my neighborhood joint - love it! Good food, great booze, lovely people! Leslie is fabulous. The live music is consistently fine. Food specials are yummy and the ambiance is comfortable and artful. Four stars instead of five just because sometimes service is a little slow, but always friendly. My friends and I will keep coming, especially during the summer to take advantage of the great outdoor seating. Love you Boon's.

I think I have been in here every week for over a year. Usually stop by for $8 growler fills on Mondays and then stop in for lunch or dinner another time during the week. Their bugers are huge and tasty. Love rhe fries. Check their specials, there are usually some tasty sandwhiches or burgers not on the main menu that you won't want to miss. I had the dragon burger on special this week and it was like a ban mi burger... amazing!

I've been making the rounds, visiting the far reaches of the McMenamins empire as I try to fill out their passport. On a Saturday evening, I ended up here around dinner time so I decided to have a beer and a sandwich. As usual with McMenamins, the beer was great and the food was fine. But the service was soooooooooooooo slow. Let's be clear, I'm not knocking the service in general. Our server was actually really friendly and knowledgeable. It just felt like the whole joint was desperately understaffed for how busy the place was. My beer-and-a-sandiwch experience ended up taking nearly two hours from the time I was seated until I was able to pay and leave. I'm aware that this may have been a one time thing, so I won't go lower than A-OK (after all, the food, drink, and atmosphere were). But I'm also not going out of my way to return and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who is in a hurry.

The service was awesome! And the food was quite good too. I tried one of the special menu items, which was a Thai-style burger with pickled carrots and peanut sauce. I chose the corn chowder as my side item. The soup was a bit watery and I didn't enjoy it much but the burger was a solid choice. Perfect medium rare, fresh bun and flavorful peanut sauce. I had a beer to accompany my meal - I couldn't decide between two and since I could only have one beer at a time, the server suggested I mix the two. Apparently the two beers I wanted to try are often ordered that way. Glad I went for it because it was probably my favorite beer I've had on awhile. Don't recall the names but one had hints of grapefruit and the other was an amber ale. I sat on the patio since I had the pups with me, and there were two other parties that did the same. So glad we found a dog-friendly place.

Best visit yet .. Mark was our sever and he was great. Food was delicious, service was great. Ate the 'Thai dye dragon' chicken sandwich, super tasty! Went mid day which seemed to be the time to go. . Hardly anyone in there!

Great burger tonight and my wife says the Hammerhead Veggie Burger is unquestionably the best veggie in town. It's not mushy and not hockey puckish. Service is not all that prompt but it's not Jimmy Johns it's a pub. The staff are bright and get and give joke. And finally I'm satisfied (just) with their IPA It's hoppish (not quite hoppy) and not fruity. And there is always music. Tonight a 4.

Not impressed at all, very disappointing especially after other great locations. Definetly won't be back here again, wouldn't want to interrupt any more long conversations the waitress has while the rest of us wait.......

We love this place! Really comfortable atmosphere with great food. Classic American fare and really the best Salem has to offer. Also, our waitress Laura was FANTASTIC. She made our experience a million times greater. She was attentive without being pushy at all and really knew what she was talking about. We'll definitely come back.

I've been going to Boon's since before it was a McMenamin's. The recent decline is making me question my desire to ever go back. I went there for dinner at 7 last night and the place was a mess. All of the empty tables were covered with dirty dishes both inside and outside the restaurant. When my table was finally cleared by a sweat covered wait person, we were told that food orders had just gone from 30 to 45 minutes. We ordered drinks and they came relatively quickly but we were told food orders had gone to an hour wait. We didn't hear from a wait person for another 20 minutes. She came to get our order and apologized. We were told that she has asked the manager to call in additional staff but he had declined. Not having 2 hours for dinner and getting pretty hungry, we declined to order food. It took another 20 minutes to get the bill and pay. Over the years, I've seen district managers come to this location and heard the staff complain about their heavy handed approach at trying to solver their problems. It's clear there is a culture of fear in the organization that is causing it to rot from the top down. The chronic understaffing isn't fair to customers or the staff. It's not that hard to predict. When the weather is nice, they are one of the few locations in town where you can take the kids, have a beer and food, and sit outside. On these evenings they get slammed and simply don't staff for it. The mangers are either unprepared or afraid to ask for staff to come in. An organization that treats their employees and customers this way simply will not get my business any longer.

Cute little spot! Love nights when they have live music and the patio is nice in the summer. Fairly small menu, but the food is always good. Downside is the servers...they're always kind of catty, don't check on you often, and spend a lot of time gossiping behind the bar:/

Showed up to listen to live music with my family. I was informed that my nephew which online says can stay til 9. Then the server tells me he has to put in his order by 815 or won't be served. We waited 40 minutes to get our food which then it was so close to 9 that my sister had to leave with my nephew without them even eating. She then tries to cash out and takes another 10 minutes to bring her the change. I was not given one napkin or even asked how my meal was. I'm a bartender in Las Vegas and this is the worst service I have received. I came to enjoy a new place and would never recommend this place to anyone. Still waiting for my server and it's literally been an hour. Only reason they get one star is because it won't let me post otherwise.

I love Boones. The cozy, old timey atmosphere in the dark months, the outdoor patio on warm summer days, the comfort food, the great beer, the nice clientele, the variety of live music ... all deserve 5 stars. If you can't find me, I'm probably at Boones

I've been here a few times and it's very consistent in its quality of food/drink and its service. The food is always on point, salads limp but everything else tastes great! That being said, please be sure to NOT order a mixed drink. Poorly made, over priced and hardly any booze. Always a great beer selection. The service is always slow, but everyone is extremely nice and accommodating.

Went back tonight, and were greeted by a friendly server who was very attentive and obliging. Meal was great, music was mellow, and the beer on special was pretty darn good (Dr. Who brown ale). Still think they should move the garbage cans out of view of the bar, but I realize that space could be a prohibitive issue. Thanks for the nice evening!

I love mcmenamins but the service here is a coin flip. I used to live a few blocks away from this location and really enjoyed the outdoor seating and atmosphere. There are bands/musical performances once a week which can be nice.

Service is slow. But that's like every McMenamins and isn't because the server isn't trying. They're always understaffed. The free live music on the whole is pretty great. Well margaritas are delicious and cheap during happy hour!

Came here during happy hour and had the inside seating almost all to our selves. Service was very friendly and helpful. Ordered a burger and they actually cooked it the correct level of medium rare! Very unusual these days! All the food we ordered came quickly and was excellent . But the drinks were a little slow. Overall it's a cool building and definitely worth a visit. The outdoor seating is pretty crappy though and I can't imagine why someone would want to actually sit out there when one of the draws is the fact that its a historic building.

A little slow since it was not packed is the star off. Otherwise order a hammerhead and a nice guy - even if you eat meat - soooo tasty.

Great beer, wine, food, and whiskey. Brian was awesome and built a great fire for us on the patio. Great food and drink + good fire = fantastic!

I found Boon's Treasury to be a great spot to cool my heels while I waited for service on my motorcycle 650 mi into my trip. I ordered a vegan hemp patty with the regular burger setup and tater tots, side of BBQ sauce and Purple Haze beer. The bread on the burger is HUGE - I ended up leaving more than half of the top on the plate. The patty itself was ok - a bit bland, but the veggies in the setup were good. Tater tots were - well - tater tots. The Purple Haze Beer was so different from the Abita Brewing Company beer with the same name - a light, refreshing marionberry wheat beer. Perfect for a hot day. If service had been a bit snappier, I would have had a second beer! The interior is dark wood, booths - very English pub sort of style. Pretty clean throughout with some outdoor seating on the front and side of the restaurant.

Worst service ever!! Took 30 mins to get drink. Waiter just made excuses for the poor service.

The restaurant had fun decor and the food was great, but it was so understaffed that they didn't have time to even clear tables for new customers. I would go again but possibly not on a weekend. We used our passport for a free sandwich so the price was unbeatable.

This was the first McMinnies I'd been to outside of Portland. Didn't do any exploring as I was starving but judging by what I saw from our booth its a cool spot with occasional live music and mixed crowd of old and young people. I ordered Cajun tots (always A+) and a burger with a side of clam chowder- all of which was delicious. Only downside was the semi-slow service...but then again I was impatient & hungry.

So here's the thing. I really want to like this place. It's got a really good vibe to it, the food is good, not expensive, the beer ranges from just fine to delightful. It's the service where it all suffers. Every single time I have been here, which is probably five-to-eight or so over the course of the last year, the service is horrifically slow. I went with a friend of mine tonight, just to get out on a summer evening and enjoy the weather and talk over a few beers. We sat on the porch, which was nicely shaded, were greeted by a friendly-but-seemed-tired server and took a table for ourselves. He started us off with a couple beers. This is where the trouble starts. My first and second choice of beers were not available, even though they were on the white paper beer list that was on the table. My friend was also required to go with his backup plan as his first choice was not available. The server claimed that he had just started his shift and that the previous shift had forgotten to update the beer sheets for the porch. I believe him, but it's still a mark against the staff for me. So we got a couple beers and an order of My Thai tots (which were delicious) to share. Then, once we had finished the first round of beers, we left the empty glasses on the edge of the table so they would be noticeable. It still took a solid 12-15 minutes for our server to revisit us and offer to get us another round. Then the same thing happened again before we were ready to head home for the night. We made it a point to have our cards out to pay our tabs before the server showed up with our bills, so we would not have to wait for the server to come back again to claim them, because who knows how long that might take. I will say that the atmosphere of this place is great, and if you have a lot of time to kill, it's a pretty perfect spot. If you're trying to keep to a schedule, or don't feel super okay with having to wait around for what would otherwise be unacceptable amounts of time, steer clear.

This place has been terribly slow every time I've been here. I've been here probably 10 times. I was hoping last night would be different but it was not. I asked everyone who was with us if they have ever had good service there and they said no. They said there is a joke in the statesman Journal that Oregonians never say there is good service at McMenamin's, boy is it true. Most places have better service than this one. The only good thing here is the tots.

I know that half-assed service is a hallmark of McMenamins pubs. I've been to McMenamins from Olympia to Ashland, and I've never managed to get in and out in under an hour. I've come to expect it. In fact, I sometimes enjoy the prospect of a nice slooooow meal with plenty of time for conversation before the meal arrives. I don't dock stars for slow. I also acknowledge the rumors that McMenamins is a lousy employer, so I'm predisposed to forgive occasional service slip-ups. Boon's Treasury is not fast food. That's to be expected. However, I certainly didn't expect the service to be as disastrous as it has been over my last three visits (yeah, you heard right - like I just had to make sure they weren't just having a bad night. Or two bad nights). Waitstaff forgot appetizers and bungled orders. One waitress incorrectly claimed that a certain menu item was on the Happy Hour menu and refused to serve it to us. The silverware arrived 10-15 minutes after our dinner. We had to snatch menus off of nearby empty tables. And so on and so forth. If the service-superior Thompson House on Liberty didn't offer the exact same middling-to-decent bar fare and microbrews as Boon's Treasury, I'd have given this place an extra star. Fortunately we Salemites don't have to suffer gross incompetence in order to get our Hammerhead and Dungeonburgers... just the regular ol' mild McMenamins incompetence we Oregonians have grown to love.

Came here with some relatives so we could have a place to chat and have some decent food. I always look forward to going to ANY McMenamins because I love their home brewed root beer. Well...wouldn't ya know it they no longer have their home brewed root beer!! I was crushed!! I hope that the other McMenamins have NOT also canned the home brewed root beer. I settled for water. We got here at about 7 PM and did not get our food until after 8 PM. Yup, over an HOUR wait. This was OK for us this time because we were happily catching up with our family, chatting away. I am wondering if the restaurant picked up on that we were not in any rush?? I ordered the roasted garlic burger. It was pretty good actually! Me being the garlic lover that I am, LOVED the big chunks of roasted garlic falling out of the burger. My fries were cold & burnt though, so I had to send them back to get new ones. While we were there a band arrived and started to set up. Looked like they had a lot of different instruments. I would have liked to stay and listen to their music but after waiting over an hour for our food and hanging around yet another hour, I was ready for home. Maybe next time...

I had half a turkey sandwich and their soup of the day (African Chicken Peanut). The soup was tomato-based and had nice flavor but I failed to get a peanut taste in there (or see any peanuts). The sandwich was good -- and I liked that they toasted the bread for me -- but I would have preferred the Swiss cheese melted on the turkey. The cranberry relish gave the sandwich a little sweetness and the red onion brought a pleasurable bite. I guess for me, in the end, I'm just not a pub person, so it's really three stars overall.

This place is great for better than average bar food and good beer. I came here with a date during reverse happy hour since the kitchen at Word of Mouth closed before we got a chance to order food. I guess there aren't many options in Salem to get decent food and drink on a Thursday, so we Yelped and ended up here. Nice suggestion Yelp! This place had a band playing classic rock when we walked through the door, which scored major points in my book as they were pretty good. Then we found it was reverse happy hour and everything was ridiculously cheap. It was almost impossible to choose between their two vegetarian options, but I went with the homemade veggie burger. I have to say that it was pretty glorious. Of course my judgement may have been clouded by their delicious beers as well. Great place to kick it with friends or for a casual date. Plus they have tots! And you've gotta love a place with tots!

Boon's Teasury has a beautiful bar, great service, and overall is at great atmosphere. Do yourself a favor: save ten bucks and eat somewhere else. I guess i can only speak for the burgers which was 'poor' at best. Go for drinks, great free music on the Friday I was there, and tables full of friendly folks. The place is cool in my book; with clean bathrooms, attentive staff, and plenty of parking to boot! I'll be back (for drinking).

I love their beer and entertainment, but the wait time has always been way too long. You couldn't go there on a lunch hour and expect to get out of there in a reasonable amount of time. The food is always delicious and service so-so, but the wait time kills me with this place.

Was just here tonight and heard a great band but the service was atrocious. I sat down and the place was busy, so when the waitress walked by me 4 or 5 times without stopping, I just figured that she was busy. She never smiled so I thought she had orders on her mind, but then 45 minutes passed by so I tapped her arm while she was clearing a table (Yes I worked in a restaurant and even owned one once) and asked her if they had Red Bull or something of that nature. She told me to go across the street if I want Red Bull, never smiled, never asked if she could get me something else, she just walked off. 20 more minutes passed with no response, so I finally went to the bar and ordered food and an RC cola. He brought it out to me finally. I ate my food then finished my soda. They know I am here. The soda sat on my table for 45 minutes, the girl barely glanced at me as she passed by. I never got a refill. I officially sat there for 2 hours watching the band, in a booth, and never talked to the waitress. This place sucks beyond sucking! I will NEVER be back.

It's a McMenamins for gosh sakes! Don't expect crazy fast service or over the top tasting food. But the beer is good and the atmosphere is great! Just a tip, if you are going for happy hour (which is awesome!) be sure and get there early... it fills up quick!

This place is one of the best places around for getting a beer and having a good time. I've been enjoying boones since about 2000. And the fact that it has remained mostly unchanged during that time should tell you that this place has the recipe for success. Try multiple beers because they offer an assortment of excellent brews. Also, this is one of the few places in salem you can get a beer served on nitrogen. The pub style food is above par and the weekly specials are usually very good. If you're not in the mood to hangout you can always get your beer to go.

Two words. Happy. Hour. This is THE best place to go after work with friends and/or co-workers in Salem. The atmosphere is so laid back you don't feel bad about sitting around for a couple hours talking and eating their scrumptous fries. Their happy hour menu is priced very reasonably. One negative would be the parking. So carpool.

I can't help but rave about McMenamins. The McMenamins brothers opened their first pub in Portland many years ago and now they spread themselves out all over the pacific northwest. Their brews are excellent (the Terminator Stout is a favorite) and their food is better-than-average bar food. Each pub is in an older/renovated building which means (1) each location has its own character and (2) the pubs help rejuvenate run-down buildings and bring more life to neighborhoods. This location is cozy on the inside with both booth and table seating. Sometimes you'll even find live music. For warmer evenings there is also a nice quiet, secluded outdoor seating area which also manages to feel cozy and intimate. Tip: if you go during the fall, you must order sweet potatoe fries, they are simply amazing.

Growing up in a former British colony I have eaten my fair share of good pub fare. This place certainly is not one of them. The beer was good but the food was weak. We knocked back a few pints in order to compensate for the lame pub grub.

  • Owanda G.

Great place to try out some of the local brew and grab some grub. McMenamins' Pubs are located in either old or historical buildings so each pub is unique. This one is an old house. They serve standard pub fare which is quite good. You can't go wrong with them if you're looking for a good drink and a nice meal.
