If you are in the Salem that is where you go to get fish. Today is the first time I have stopped at this location and I am glad i did. Walking from farmers market to the riverfront park the outdoor patio was calling out my name. I came in 3 people asked me if I had been helped within 5 minutes then I sat down in the patio with a cool breeze blowing. People walking around, I could see every street alley and viewpoint of the surrounding area. My favorite part was an old couple, probably married 60 year, walking by holding hands. The food came and it was over. Macadamia encrusted rock fish. Very very yummy. A great stop, and the waitress was very friendly. Feel good spot!

Dirty utensils! We had to ask for new utensils twice before we got a decent set. They had pieces of food still on them, and they felt oily... It was my first time here, so it was a rough beginning. I ordered the herb crusted salmon salad. The salmon was good. The balsamic salad dressing was decent, but the romaine lettuce was a bit soggy. I also got the fishermen's stew, which had small pieces of fish and clam. Overall, the flavors were not impressive and I will not come here again.

My wife and I visited this restaurant with my Son and granddaughter today, August 16, 2015. We were all disappointed with the food. The last time I visited this restaurant was about a year ago and now I know why. My wife and I had the fish and chips and it was awful. There was absolutely zero flavor with the dish. I couldn't taste the fish. The clam chowder came to us warm and soupy with potatoes but zero clams. Not coming back again.

Once again I found myself in Salem, Or to have my salmon fix for the week. I live in Los Angeles and we have very few seafood options oddly enough. Sure you can find me in Santa Monica at "The Lobster" or "Gladstone's" in Pac Pal. They are great, but it's rare and few and far between for the entire city of Los Angeles. Angelenos seem to think one of the few million strip mall sushi joints count as seafood restaurants!! Not the same. While in Oregon for a wedding. A friend and my Mother went to lunch at McGrath's so we could enjoy some seafood for a Change. We arrived there at 12:15 Monday 11/24/14 for lunch. First off, the restaurant had the heat blasting. It gets cool in Oregon's western valley, but not ice cold (upper 50s cold). Plus, what does it matter what it is doing outside when you are inside anyway, plus many people already have their sweatshirts or jackets on. I just don't get the whole "cozy" idea of blasting hot heaters when the temp outside dips below 60! It's difficult to even have an appetite when sweltering. My Mom ordered Chowder and a salad. My friend and I ordered the "dinner" Alder Planked Salmon. The only difference was that I ordered a bowl of chowder. The sour dough bread was included and wonderful. My mom and I got our chowder or "potato soup"! It was hot, I could not find one single clam in mine!! The chowder was at least hot, the potatoes were Raw. Not firm. These cubed spuds were raw! It was beginning to take time to receive little things we would ask our server for ( like napkins) at this point. I didn't feel comfortable saying anything about the food because my mom was taking us out to lunch & didn't want to make more of a spectacle than normal. The food arrived & my Mom's salad was fine. The salmon orders also came. All food hot, important...but my fish was at best half the size of a dinner portion!! No scallion butter to be found, the thickness of most of my tinny fish was all over the place, 80% of it was flat! And crisp /burnt because it was a very uneven tiny piece of fish! No thickness . I had maybe one real bite! for the rest, I had to look everywhere for an edible bite! It was burnt and ashes all over the bottom of it. They ARE capable of making it right too, I have had it several times. My friends fish was extremely small too, but not as flat and uneven. When I say uneven, I know fish isn't always a uniform size, but mine was a piece of fish that should have been tossed or made into patte'. Our server was no where to be found at this point. I wanted to tell her about my fish before my friends fish got cold, though,he wasn't happy with his either. Some manager type person came by about 10 minutes too late and asked how everything tasted. It should have been obvious to anyone working there that the salmon looked awful. I figured if they would actually serve something like this, they probably weren't going to much help beyond this point. I have been to this "Mcgrath's" on numerous occasions and have had a long list of problems here. Mcgrath's is a chain that started at this very location in 1979. We had one in Arcadia not far from Santa Anita & it closed several years ago. I was happy there was a non sushi restaurant in the SGV at last . I had a string of bad experience's happen at this location and told them about them with obviously no results. Including a 2008 phone call to John McGrath to tell him about each meal. There was a rock in my groups salads at one point. I also felt he was expanding too fast and needed to take care of the stores he already had. He promised me a $200.00 certificate for the 2008 group visit. It NEVER arrived . I have since given Mcgrath's chances here and there whenever I'am around. But this time the fish was horrible and it should have been obvious by looking at it when it was served!! We were also rushed for time. And our sever was slow. It took 12 minutes to get our ticket after our food was removed. The restaurant was never crowded throughout our entire meal. The check finally came & it took another 17 minutes to get change. ****UPDATE***** I received a message from John's son. With a friendly apology, but typical "form letter" predictable response.( but better than his father's approach). Another reason why I didn't bother to say anything to the manager on my visit. McGrath's is capable of making great seafood meals and has a great menu at reasonable prices. I guess that's why it frustrates me so much. My criticism went on deaf ears in 2008. Not to mention an empty promise, that I just cannot recommend McGrath's. They are completely inconsistent & bordering on consistently disappointing. While no one is perfect all of the time, I have never been to a restaurant with so many problems that can easily be fixed. I think as a rule, people in that region seem to "settle" for poor quality dinning experiences. It's too bad! :I'm hoping they fix their problems chainwide. I want them to thrive

Despite some of the negative reviews, we decided to give this place a try. We went on a weekday, for dinner. The place was not too busy and we were seated right away. Our server was nice, although she did not check up on us as often as we would have liked- other servers kindly picked up the slack. No complaints about the seafood. The clam chowder tasted fresh. The macadamia-crusted basa was nutty and tender. Finally, the seared ahi tuna (from the "small bites") was well-seasoned and meaty. Their margaritas are not half bad either, though highly priced. I would be happy to come back.

Service was lack luster and confused. Waitress did not seem to be interested waiting on us. Food was adequate but not outstanding.

The food here is pretty good but the service is really bad. We stopped eating at the McGraths on Center because of the poor service but were disappointed to find that the service at the downtown location isn't much better. They just miss the details that make a good dining experience. For example, we waited more than 15 minutes before our drink orders were taken. When we finally got our drinks, there were no straws. We had to ask two more times before we got straws. When our drinks were empty the waitress collected our glasses and brought refills with (you guessed it) no straws. Perhaps there is a global straw shortage. My coleslaw was served in a warm bowl...yuck. My food was awesome! I got the coconut ahi.

If you appreciate good seafood, do yourself a favor and don't eat here. They burned my $20 salmon, not to mention it was small and delivered to the wrong person. The vegetables are straight off the Cisco truck, frozen. The only redeeming qualities? The amazingly generous pour by the bartender and the nice servers. So sad. This place is a dumpy disservice to Salem. Save your money.

Had a group of six for dinner. The service was poor, I asked two servers for hot sauce and never got it during the entire dinner. One meal came 10 min after everyone else had their order. I had a cup of FISH stew that did not have one piece of fish in it. Shrimp tacos were terrible. Slow service with hardly any other patrons.

Slow slow slow. Over five minutes to even get a water. Four unbussed tables near us. Waitress walked right by us without saying anything. We just left.

Phew, I was beginning to lose faith in McGrath's but the downtown Salem location redeemed themselves. Stopped by for lunch on a Saturday with my daughter. We were quickly seated in a nice window table. We knew we wanted appetizers to share and I wanted a cocktail as well. Our waitress was friendly and quickly took our drink and appetizer order. I wanted a Bloody Mary and like them very specific with a little splash of dill pickle juice added. It tasted great and I loved that the waitress made sure I was enjoying it and if I didn't it could be remade. To eat we ordered the Seafood Sampler to share. All seafood items tasted fresh, our only gripe would be, the crab dip didn't taste like it had any crab, although we could see it faintly. Next time we are thinking of McGrath's we will be sure to stop by this location over the Center St. location.

we have tried this location three times...and three times is not a charm in this case, at least for me. My husband has been happy 2 out of three times. I have been OK 1 out of 3 times. won't bother with this location again. seriously, we live near the ocean -- why is the fish not fresh?

I like to visit restaurants...I have no problem paying the mark-up for food. I do this frequently and usually chuckle to myself when a delusional person in my party says they can do better than what we just ate. I can assure you I am not delusional when I thought to myself...I can, and do, do better than this...on a nightly basis. The fish ordered from several companions and myself..soggy. Just absolutely dripping and squishy. Well seasoned though. Baked potatoes for 50% of party were killed by overcooking. The accompanying green beans in, each, and, every dish, were beyond limp and not even green in two of our party's cases. The price, I feel, was cheap...however, I'm used to paying $20+ for a very well executed fish dish. So this was on sale for me..and I couldn't get too upset. It was cheap so, meh. The clam chowder...good, but pedestrian. I can have this anywhere. The bar service was amazingly indifferent. A party of 3 were ignored ahead of us then out party of five took more than five minutes to get asked if we'd like a round of drinks. Yes...that's why we are all sitting at your bar. Again though, it really comes back to this... the next night, I bought some: fresh salmon, broccoli, and slivered almonds. I grilled the salmon with a light dusting of salt/pepper, steamed the broccoli and toasted the almonds...quickly mixed the broccoli and almonds with a Tbs of olive oil and salt/pepper/crushed red pepper. This meal was hands down better than the injustice they did the night before. Honestly, avoid...unless you don't really care.

Ordered the South of the Border Omlette for breakfast. It was an average omelet but a little dry. I asked for a side of salsa to spice it up a bit, and it was much better, though their salsa was from a jar. I guess I should have known better than to order a Mexican omelet from a fish restaurant. It came with a sticky cinnamon bun, which normally I would have inhaled. But it was lacking in flavor and I only ate half of it. I might come back here again and try the fish, but I'd rather eat at a breakfast restaurant that rhymes with Benny's than eat breakfast here again.

Eat there once a month until now; hit and miss with the servers. If you decide to go, don't fall for the "double the shrimp for $1.99". You'll get the bill but not the shrimp!

Ate here in late August. Outdoor seating was the only thing enjoyable. Having lived on the east coast, this was not the finest seafood restaurant by a long shot. Menu was so long it was hard to decide what was good. Coconut shrimp app was small & oily. Trying to have an array of items was a bad idea - everything was FRIED. I didn't catch a good vibe. Overpriced & poor service. Avoid the Sangria. Maybe a 2nd chance, but I probably won't be back - I'll go somewhere else.

I have to admit years ago this place was top notch. The food and service were always amazing and my husband and I would go at least once a month. As always the prices go up and the service gets poor. We took the inlaws there and my father inlaws food was ice cold. Now mind you he doesn't complain about a thing and when he does it is bad. The server got the manager who took the food back and simply microwaved it and then offered the food for free. We then tried them again for breakfast and the service was so bad we left. We were promptly seated and brought water and looked over the menu for 10 minutes. Please note there was only 4 of us total in the place. Another couple were seated next to us and we are thinking finally our order will be taken. Nope. She promptly walked off. The server then walked past us again and took the order of the other couple and again walked past us. Ok we are good patrons. We never ask for much, we never raise hell we just expect good service. So we got up and walked out and the hostess gave us a dirty look and I admit I shot one back. I will never return and I have been a patron for 20 years. If anyone asks where they can get good seafood in the area I tell them to avoid this joint.

Alex S. mentioned the "corporate, chain-like" atmosphere of McGrath's, and he's right on the money. It didn't used to be this way. The downtown McGrath's was the first in the chain and their only location for many years, and it used to be THE place in Salem to get seafood. Back then, the menu emphasized an ever-changing array of fresh "catch of the day" options. Nowadays, dinner options that used to be limited to their fishing seasons are available year round, and you can bet they're mostly shipped frozen and prepared assembly line-style. Why anyone would want to eat frozen seafood when the ocean is less than two hours away is beyond me. Service here can also be lacking. Last time I ordered seafood fettucine (I know, I know, but it's comfort food) it came without seafood!

I stepped into the door, and it took at least 10 minutest to get seated at 2pm... It was not even lunch hour rush. Our server was inattentive. I drank all my water, and never got a refill. She never stopped by once except for the bill. We kept looking for her to get the bill. The food was okay, nothing to praise. Clam chowder cost .59 extra, and it lacked of flavor. I had the bay salmon, and the stuffing inside tasted terrible. I think I will go to the lancaster location.

While I've noticed this one to be the less crowded on the weekends, its also the one that happens to have some of the better prepared food. I haven't always had good luck at this location in terms of service but I assume it varies to some degree here. Prices are solid, but one has to remember that seafood is typically not all that cheap. While some folks may be turned off by its corporate chain-like atmosphere but it still serves some of the better seafood in Salem.

Bad location. Quality and consistency of food is not on par with other McGraths, so much so, that I don't go to this location any longer. Parking is bad, since its downtown. Once inside, its very dark unless you are near the front window. The wait staff is hit and miss, no consistency there either. For what you pay for the food, its not worth going to this location. Go to the Lancaster one...run much better.

Loved this place. Although a chain, it has great seafood. I loved all the different types and combinations of seafood. The sourdough bread was delicious and hot. We went to another McGrath's in Salem and also in Washington State. All were wonderful and great service besides. We plan to go in 2012 to another location in Southern Oregon.

I didn't know at first that this was a chain restaurant, but we could tell pretty well once we were inside. Our lunch was pretty good, my kids both got grilled cheese, and my husband and I split some oysters and crab cakes. Nothing inspiring, but all okay.

A very good seafood restaurant - the coleslaw was bit too sweet and the tuna a little dry, but otherwise quite good. I'd go back again.

This is the first restaurant of a northwest chain that provides a good menu with a nice variety of options. The service is friendly, knowledgable, and very attentive. The atmosphere is warm and inviting and the dinning areas is divided into several secitions which gives a cozy and intimate feel to the dining experience. Food is reasonably priced (especially during lunch) and while the menu is full of tasty options--it isn't really too daring. I've been a few times and its a place I would go back to.

A local favorite for seafood, this location was the original restaurant opened by John McGrath in 1980. Offering a wonderful selection of seafood and Northwest cusine, this place is great for any occasion. It's got something to suit everyone's palate and their staff are helpful, friendly and accomodating. I prefer this downtown location to the other McGrath's in town. Food is good, prices reasonable and parking is easy to find. This place is definitely a Salem landmark that's worth a visit!
