We were very impressed with this cafe. On the way to the Wednesday market, we were offered a generous hamburger sample, and decided to grab lunch here. The cafe is larger than we expected, cozy and cool. There are tables as well as couches, bar seats, a huge screen and a stage. The employees are very friendly. We received lunch in a very timely manner. The burger was tasty, with a grilled/charbroiled flavor. The fries are breaded... very unique. The free wifi works great. Can't wait to come back to relax and try their coffee!

Where church, commerce and community intersect. I can't really write a review about Café Shine without addressing the elephant in the room. This former seedy nightclub (complete with an upskirt viewing window in the floor) was transformed into a coffee bar and lounge by the Salem House of Prayer and the business continues to support that organization. My initial impression was very positive and I couldn't believe this coffee house was located in downtown Salem. I was informed by the barista that staff members and the designer took coffee house tours of Portland and were going for that vibe. It is a large space with multiple seating areas, including some cozy tables on an upper level (former VIP section?) and it is pretty ideal for community gatherings and concerts. You can still see a lot of oddities leftover from the nightclub era, but the viewing window mentioned above has been cleaned up with a Café Shine sign in neon. They get their beans from Tico's Coffee Roasting Co. in nearby Stayton and they also have a nice selection of high end teas. I enjoyed my mocha (four variations are available) and the service was wonderful. Religion is such a complex and personal thing, so the prayer room on the main floor and religious posters (especially on the stairs and lower level leading to the restrooms) were a little much for me. That isn't to say that I don't think they've done an amazing job to renovate and revitalize the space, but the environment was a little much for my personal comfort level.

I've walked past this place so many times, and on Monday i decided to finally check it out. I came into a nearly empty cafe. I asked about the brand of coffee they served and was given a sample (probably 2 oz) of very hot Tico coffee. I asked for a cappuccino, which was $3.00. The cappuccino was beautiful, and came in a heavy black cup with the Cafe Shine/Tico logos on each side of the cup and a cute little spoon. (Believe it or not, this is the first time an espresso bar in Salem has given me a tiny little spoon to stir in any sugar and/or toy with the microfoam on my cappuccino. The cappuccino well made. I walked around taking pictures of the cafe, and they have intereting little conversation areas, a big screen tv which showed, at the time, a silent film and had calming music playing in the background. (Not sure if they only show silents, but iI thought it was a great idea. They also had coffee/tea cups and other items for sale along the walls. I didn't get as far back as the prayer room, but I did see interesting art, and a beautiful fountain on the wall near the door. I think I might come back to Cafe Shine. The only thing that bothered me is where the customers were. A clean establishment with entertainment, wi-fi and great coffee should be doing more business. The only thing I can come up with is that word of mouth hasn't gotten around and/or that Cafe Shine is located in a pretty caffeinated part of Salem (2 Starbucks, The Beanery, Gov Cup and Crema Brewtique all in very close proximity) I hope that people will give Cafe Shine a chance.

The coffee is great, and I'm pretty picky about my coffee. They have such cute and friendly staff. It's nice to have such an awesome coffee house downtown again. I used to frequent Coffee House Cafe and the Downtown Salem Area has reallybeen missing having something like this ever since they closed. Love the atmosphere!
