Everyone has a favorite breakfast place in Portland, and this is mine. Fantastic service, a solid staff that's hasn't changed much over the years, and always the scones right when you sit down. I LOVE the scones, partly because they're delicious, but especially because if you arrive hungry (for whatever reason!) you will have a much nicer time picking your meal with a little grub in your belly. I have been a weekly patron, and sometimes won't see them for months, but always I can expect to have a wonderful experience. It's totally worth waiting outside for a little bit with a hot cup of coffee and some pals. Heck, they even have heaters for cold weather, now. Or should I say - this place sucks, don't go here, so we who love it can keep it to ourselves?

Lovely breakfast! Truly. We were seated at the bar, and I have to say, they have a gorgeous old wooden buffet/bar behind the counter. We had barely taken our coats off and plates of warm little scones appeared in front of us with delicious jam - I don't know which I liked more, the warm scone or the jam. I didn't even use butter. Just...YUM. I had a stack of fluffy pumpkin pancakes, but felt like I needed something sodium laden to counteract the sweet, and ordered a side of potatoes with cheese. Holy shit - the best breakfast side of taters in town, period! I wasn't feeling particularly well that morning - and I was staring at my half a stack of pancakes, and half a plate of potatoes feeling very sorry for myself when the waitressed noticed me and burst out laughing at my pathetic face. "We have boxes, you know!" She just couldn't understand how much I wanted to eat it ALL. RIGHT THEN. It was sooooo good! But it was pretty hilarious. And the leftovers were JUST as good the next day. I have plans on being here much more often. Mmm. Breakfast.

In a city that loves its brunch, Zell's unassumingly gets it right with a menu full of egg-based breakfast standards and delicious sandwiches and soups if you're leaning more toward the "unch" side of things. The service may not be the friendliest you've ever received, but it's speedy without being pushy. This efficiency means a short wait in line even on a busy Saturday. If you have a tiny wait before you get your food, Zell's delicious complementary scones will whet your appetite. While I may not have been blown away by the food, it was tasty and the experience was positive enough to draw me back, especially if I'm stuck in line at one of the more popular near options nearby.

1 Italian sausage omelette, 1 hangtown fritatta,1 bottomless coffee, 1 large chair. $25 plus free scones and homemade jam, friendly service, and cozy dining area.

Zell's recently became my favorite breakfast joint in Portland, it was love at first bite. The serving size is huge (always leftovers), the asking price is perfect, and breakfast is served all day. The food is delicious, whether it's a classic meal or something special, and there's a wide variety to choose from which means something new every time! If there's any dispute to a better breakfast spot in Portland, Zell's wins with their delicious complimentary scones alone.

We were looking for a new breakfast place and Zell's had decent reviews. The place has an air of a an 80's breakfast joint. It's not quite diner, not quite restaurant. Dark wood, dingy half-curtains hanging in the window. Okay, maybe they weren't actually dingy but there's nothing flashy about this place, but it doesn't quite hit "homey" either. Someone else mentioned that it's one room and it's loud. This is very true. There was a shrieking kid and combined with the poor acoustics, I could barely hear my company across the table and the place was not packed on a Tuesday morning. The parents halfheartedly shushed the kid, but it was clear they didn't care about the noise he was generating. I had coffee and he had English Breakfast tea. The tea was a HUGE portion served in a French press. He thought it was great, and he loves strong, loose-leaf tea. My boyfriend and I skipped the scones as we try to avoid sugar and grains, though it looked like everyone else was mowing down on them and the raspberry jam. I got the mushroom, thyme, and Gorgonzola 3-egg omelet with cottage cheese instead of potatoes (about $9 plus an extra dollar or two for the sub). He got the traditional eggs bendict with fruit instead of the potatoes ($10 with two dollars for the fruit). My omelet was palatable but all the components didn't sing. The sliced white mushrooms were still very firm and had no hint of carmelization - like they were partially steamed, sliced and added. The Gorgonzola was the very dry, crumbly kind - not the unctuous, creamy kind. The thyme was dried, not fresh. Again, it was totally edible but lacked any finesse. Cottage cheese is cottage cheese, you either love it or hate it. The plate was adorned with a single sprig of parsley. Classy joint. My boyfriend thought his eggs benedict was good and liked the Canadian bacon on it. However, he thought the hollandaise lacked good yolky flavour, mostly lemon and it was very light tasting. Usually, light tasting is good, but hollandaise deserves it's cholesterol-rich feel, it's not a low-fat food and shouldn't be treated like one. His fruit was a mix of diced melon, including watermelon, and grapes. I might give them another try, and I think if you were looking for a carby breakfast option, they'd be a much better choice than my hunt for the perfect protein breakfast.

My gals and I ended up here for breakfast and it was amazing. When you walk in you feel like your walking in to a cozy local breakfast place. They give you these delicious little scones to hold you over while your waiting for your breakfast. All meals were perfect. I would 100% go back and recommend it to everyone

Wonderful little place to eat. Feels like an old style diner when you walk in, and the breakfasts are savory and tasty. By far my favorite thing about this place is the cute little scones that you get before your meal comes out. Butter + Jam + Scone = happiness. Check it out as a great place for weekend brunch. Recommended.

As usual, on a Sunday morning [around 11:30], we waited about 30-35 minutes, and that was just to snag two seats at the counter. I'm fine with waiting, though. There is self serve coffee while you wait, which I can get behind. They have a few heaters overhead. You're pretty much covered while you wait. They have huge windows, so you can stare at people while they eat! You know you do it, too. Zell's is all-American, except for portions, and I can appreciate that. They don't load up the food on oversize platters pretending to be plates. You're served something akin to normal. The menu is traditional as far as breakfast goes, and sports a few specials. I love the mini scones you get while you wait for your food. They're plain, flaky, and warm. I'm not going to lie. They're the only reason I've ever been intrigued by Zell's. I'm a sucker for "free" pastries. We shared a plate of corned beef hash and the lemon yogurt pancakes with blueberries. They were perfectly fine, and I left nice and comfortable. However, they didn't have anything resembling a 'WOW' factor, but for a nice, simple breakfast, you don't always need one. The corned beef wasn't what I expected, really. They take traditional hash browns and cook them with slices of beef in it. There wasn't any outstanding flavors, and the hashbrowns weren't as crispy as I was expecting. We subbed out the over-easy eggs for some scrambled, and there was more than enough to go around. I may or may not have smothered my half with Tapatio [did]. I appreciate the plain toast. I hate when they butter it for you. The pancakes came in a short stack of three. The batter was light in flavor, but mushy in execution. The poor bottom pancake couldn't hold its shape very well. It still tasted great, but I'm a batter person. I could gladly eat it by the bowlful. The blueberries retained their shape and were neither overly sweet nor sour. It was a nice combination with the hint of lemon. Our coffee stayed full, our server was pleasant, and we were out the door for $24. Decent. I doubt I'll be back, though. There are far too many better spots to eat in town, even ones without a wait [The Hop & Vine!].

Was in town visiting friends and we went to Zell's on Sunday morning for breakfast and was pleasantly surprised that we were able to get a table right away. I loved the self serve coffee so I could get a cup before even sitting down and the warm scones they brought out were great. I had the 2+2+2 which was pancakes, eggs and bacon, the eggs were good, bacon was overly dry and chewy and the pancakes were good though I'd never had cornmeal pancakes before....and there were large bits of cornmeal which were a bit chewy, I thought it a bit interesting, I don't think I'll order cornmeal pancakes again. My hubby had the eggs benny and loved it and he raved about the homefries, I didn't even get a chance to swoop in for a sample.

Based on the reviews, decided to check out Zell's cafe for brunch this Sunday. I like the neighborhood & location. I was by myself, so even though there was a waiting list, I was seated almost immediately at the counter. Service was fast & friendly - very good vibe to the place. I had the German pancake with rhubarb topping & real maple syrup, side of bacon, & coffee. Since I have never had German pancakes, I don't have a comparison - was very good. Coffee was good as well - refills for coffee & water came quick without having to ask. The rhubarb topping was delicious. The menu is varied & would suit anyone's taste. Will definitely be back.

I hate to do this, I really do. The hubby and I have recently made it our mission to find the best Eggs Benedict in town. After pouring over the many outstanding reviews we headed out this morning excited to dig into a plate of what everyone is claiming to be the best benny in town. Did we go on an off day? The eggs were way too runny and the hollandaise was so thin and lacking in flavor it may as well have not been there at all. It wasn't that they weren't the best we've tried so far, it was that they were really pretty bad. However, the service was great and you can't beat free scones. Alas, our search continues.

This was my first time to eat at this restaurant. I was not surprised to see a line out the door and to have fresh hot coffee and heaters outside made the wait a lot less painful. My 13 year old son had the French toast along with 2 slices of bacon and scrambled eggs. He left very happy and wants to eat here again. I had the chorizo omelette with potatoes. A must have and I ate the whole thing. We both were very happy to eat here and we will definitely be back

Saturday, 1 o'clock. Time for a bit of brekky. Right away, the first thing I notice is the super tempting carafe full of hot delicious coffee. Even though it doesn't look like we are going to have to wait long, I dove in, and it was delicious. We were seated within about five minutes and presented with yummy free scones. So far so good. After much deliberation, I ordered the lemon pancakes with blueberries. The pancakes were thin and tart, you could definitely taste the lemon. Perfectly yummy with butter and syrup, and that means something coming from me, as I tend to not be the hugest pancake fan. I can't wait to go back and try some other things, but overall I was pleased and full upon leaving. What more can a girl ask for?

Great location, fun and friendly staff and the food...kind of mediocre. Our coffee was really great and the scones were bomb. However, my dining partner and I both had omelets that were par to subpar. I felt the omelet was just OK. My dining partner complained that her eggs were runny. And, after peeping her huevos, I would have to agree. I would probably go back and score some pancakes and taters. They looked really good.

The secret to dining at Zell's is to get there early. If you don't, you can plan on a long wait... a very long wait. Especially on weekends. This place is a hot spot and for good reason. There's nothing special about the physical plant here. It's a room with some tables and a bar and that's about the best way to describe it. It doesn't matter though. There are just some places that are so special your surroundings don't matter, somehow. It's not always the case because in a lot of places, the surroundings can all but ruin a meal. There is only one thing that bothers me about the place and that's the tapestry curtain at the front door during the winter. Somehow, I don't see that as being good Feng Shui but I guess it keeps the guests from those chattering teeth while trying to eat their breakfast. The service here is always excellent and if you're a good boy, the owner will come by your table for a chat. That's a good thing because he's cute and personable. I can always depend on the servers to be there when I need them. Oh yes, and don't forget the food. Although I usually keep it simple and often order from the sides menu, the food is always excellent and they will do whatever you ask of them in the kitchen. I know the rest of the food is awesome. Check out Zell's for breakfast. It's the best place in South East.

Ya win some, ya lose some. Call me a bitter butter, I mean, Betty...but as perfect as the conditions were on my visit in February, they were opposingly bad on my visit this past weekend. Actually, how about I replace the word "bad" with "butter," because I think that was the overarching theme of the morning. (And the unwelcome guest ingredient of honor.) I won't go into the greasy details, but let's just say that the toast was the consistency of chewing on a warm, wet, disintegrating sponge full of butter, and the portobello mushrooms were like butter-filled pieces of Bubblicious chewing gum - complete with butter-gushing squirt action! Like I said, no details here. I even lived out a vicarious moment with Dr. Seuss..."Butter, butter, everywhere - taste your omelet if you dare..." Not a deal breaking experience, especially considering that the first time was smooth like but'a...I just don't advise taking the idiom literally.

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place before! Heavens to Betsy! Wait, who's Betsy? Never-mind, not important. So, I recommend going to Zell's on a weekday to avoid the overcrowded-hungover crowd on a Sat or Sun. The wait to get into this place is ridiculous! One thing I truly love about Zell's is the wait staff. They are always friendly and you can tell they have a sense of urgency when it comes to their customers. When you sit down first you will receive 2 little biscuits per person and some jam/butter of course. These are wonderful little nibbles before breakfast. I will order the English Breakfast tea served loose in a french press.. MMMMMMMMM, so smooth. I always order the Eggs Benedict here, simply melts in your mouth! So, what are you waiting for? Bookmark this place all ready!

I came here on a Friday morning and the food was fine, not spectacular but not bad either. My friend and I both ordered the brunch omelet, which comes with ham, cheddar cheese, mushrooms, and potatoes. After reading reviews on yelp, I was expecting an amazing omelet and was completely let down. The other food others ordered were the pastrami scramble and bacon waffles. I was told that the pastrami scramble was just ok but the bacon waffles were good. But then again, anything that has bacon in it already tastes 5x better lol. The waitress was really sweet though, so 5 stars for the service. Overall, an OK experience. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here but I also wouldn't go out of my way to avoid it.

Easily one of the best places in SE to eat in portland. The building has charm, the wait staff is attentive, prices reasonable and food is wonderful. Look on the special board to see what else they offer in addition to the menu. My personal favorite is the chorizo omelet. its very tasty. The pancakes are good too (sometimes I'm in the mood for something other than eggs). The cute scones they serve when you sit, an Amuse-bouche, are flaky and go well with coffee. All in all, a great place to visit. You won't be disappointed.

Zell's is my favorite restaurant in Portland. I go here because I love it. The food, the clientele, and the simple, old-fashioned charm of the room (for it is a room) are the highlights. The lowlights are the ever-so-slightly out of it hipster waitstaff - something one becomes accustomed to in Portland - and I've certainly seen much, much worse (Virginia Cafe, I'm looking in your couldn't-be-bothered-to-do-my-job direction), and the genuinely old-fashioned, un-upgraded building leading to such discomforts as no AC and high humidity in the summertime. You get high-quality, fresh-brewed, hot coffee and real half-n-half in glass mugs while you wait outside. Oh yes, there will be a wait - it's one of the most popular breakfast joints in town. And while you wait, you get to enjoy the fact that you're surrounded by a good cross-section of Portland residents usually engaged in animated conversation. (Oddly, I don't run into tourists. Perhaps they got lost and had to have breakfast in a lesser place.) The clientele are not purely hipster, nor are they purely retiree, nor are they uniformly upscale or downscale, nor do they lack interesting aspects, nor are they uncomfortably strange. My last morning there, a Jewish men's choir had a large table in the middle of the room, and at the end of their meal they spontaneously performed a song in Hebrew while the rest of us calmly acted like we get serenaded with such performances in our breakfast space daily. When they make their way to your name, you get seated with your (in my case, third) glass mug of delicious coffee and receive menus, water, and a little saucer of two warm scones with a seeded, homestyle jam that certainly has the appeal of hot homemade. And then you order and then you get to eat. And this is where it becomes heaven. I was going to wait a bit to try more stuff, but everything I've ordered has just been SO GOOD. This is good quality food cooked by someone who knows how to cook. Quantities are between adequate and generous, and the prices are low - less than you'd pay at a dull suburban chain breakfast restaurant. Mostly I came here this morning to post my pictures I took the last time we were there. Be sure to check 'em out.

Zells is one of my favorites - it's versatile, with some real surprises, but outstanding in all of the basics as well. The service is great, and the coffee is ok. The early morning crowd here is power-breakfasting, with later crowd a little more hippy - a hearty recommendation.

I have been here a lot. Always a great breakfast. Omelets are fantastic. This place can get crowded quickly on a weekend, go before 9:30am. The only reason why i rate 4 stars is because it's a little over priced, but otherwise top notch.

A friend suggested we meet here for our breakfast/brunch chat session. It was perfect. Atmosphere is open and can be a bit loud when the place gets busy but it was a great mix of people in there and the food was really good!!! SCONES - eat them ALL. Only could be better if they had some kind of personal scone warmer on the table so the butter and jelly and scone could all melt together and be warm and truely melt in you mouth. There is someone's million dollar invention!!! They were great !!!!!! My omelet was OK- veggie something or other and the potatoes were crispy, the way I like them, but the best was our waitress. When my frined and I get together we sit for a while and just talk. Once before server got a bit grumpy even though she had tons of other open tables- but the one we had at Zell's just let us talk and drink coffee and never got crabby. Thank you waitress!!!!! Will be back for sure!!

I have been to Zell's several times, and I have had several good experiences and one bad one. First, I couldn't be more delighted by the scones that they serve in at Zell's. I think they are fantastic. Plus, I have generally been very enthusiastic about the food. I have never had the same thing twice there, and that is a good thing. I like that they always have something new to try. My problem with this place is that Zell's is too small and too busy. This is directly related to the bad experience that I had there. It was a weekend, and the restaurant was incredibly packed. As soon as I put my omelet order in, my food was on the table. It was quick...too quick. My food was terrible and dried-out and was undoubtedly precooked and sitting in a warming tray of some sort. That being said, I would still go back. However, I would go back on a weekday or maybe really early on a weekend.

I've had this place bookmarked for quite some time now and I finally had the opportunity to try it. Came here on a Saturday morning around 10am and the wait wasn't too bad. The restaurant is pretty tiny, although they do have some outdoor seating available. I liked how attentive and friendly the staff were - definitely makes for a better experience. Their scones are one of the best I've had. I tried the Wild Smoked Salmon scramble & it was pretty good. Overall, I had a good experience, but I'm not sure how often I would come back here. Food is good but did not really "stand out".

It's pretty impossible to write a review of Zell's saying anything that hasn't already been said, but it deserves another 5-star-er. Star-er? Fuck, yeah, star-er. Free. Fucking. Scones. They taste like fluffy heaven. Warm, delicious, scones that you imagine a grandma slaves away making every minute of her life.. as if she puts all of her love for her grandchildren in every scone that meets your taste buds. And yeah, they are FREE. I've only tried a few of the menu items, but they've all been worth every penny. The Portland Potatoes, Satay Stirfry, (BOTH under $7!!) and regular Benedict were goddamn tasty. Service is always sweet and speedy. The atmosphere reminds me of the East Coast, but in the good way. They usually play smooth jazz in the background, and conversation is low and relaxed. I see lots of old couples, but plenty of single Portland youth as well. It's a sweet medley of culture (as much as can be had in any PDX establishment.. cause face it, we're mostly freaking white as sand) Even if you're really poor, right before pay day, you can come order a side of bacon (2 slices for 2 bucks) and get 2 free scones and a glass of water. That's $2 to fill your gullet. Cannot be beat.

There is something really comforting about a neighborhood place. While I've had absolutely amazing breakfasts this year at Mother's, Helser's on Alberta, Jam on Hawthorne and Tin Shed, I think they would strike some as pretentious. There are times I appreciate the showmanship and "look at me" quality of restaurants. The trendy/cool decor, effusive service and aren't we exciting menu options. But other times, it can be a little exhausting and I just want a good meal without all the fanfare. Zell's was an ideal spot for a quiet Friday morning breakfast. No hassles parking, being seated or ordering. (Sounds like it is a different story on the weekends). Two warm scones to eat with butter and jam while you wait. The fresh squeezed OJ was tasty and my Apple German pancake was filling. It was served piping hot with a sprinkle of powdered sugar, lemon wedge and syrup. Nothing was the best I've had all year. No oohs and aahs over the service or the food, but it was a completely satisfying meal. Good music, nice bar area and it just had a great neighborhood vibe. If I want to "wow" a visitor, I'll take them to one of the other spots. If I want to have a relaxed time with good food, I'll head here.

I LOVE YOU Zell's!!! After I tried to go there on the weekend and not successful to get a table because the line was too long and I'm a hungry hippo = I will get cranky after waiting for a while without food in my tummy. I finally went there yesterday on my extra day off. I love those scones. I love the Bacon, Avocado, and Tomato Omellette with those delicious potatoes that comes with it. I love the coffee. I love the mimosa. The waiter was nice and the price was right. I'm so happy that I finally experienced Zell's breakfast. Can't wait to go back there! Hm, maybe I'll take another day off just to go there.

My rating jumped from 4 stars to 5 based on one major factor of convenience- my proximity to this breakfast joint. I live straight across the street, and there is no close rival to this reliable cafe. As somebody who doesn't eat big ol' portions, my typical order used to be the teeniest combo on the menu: the 1-egg breakfast, which comes with toast and amazingly-seasoned home-style diced potatos (way better than your usual side of plain hashbrowns). But then, I miss the bacon. OH, THE BACON! It's worth ordering on the side, absolutely. AND THE COFFEE, of course. Free refills, not to mention those savory little scones they give you as soon as you're seated (usually served with delicious raspberry jam, mmmmmm). AGAIN, THEY HAVE GREAT COFFEE, AND YOU CAN DRINK AS MUCH AS YOU WANT! Having trouble deciding what to order? Munch on those hot, tasty little scones in the meantime! AND THE COFFEE! Personally, I usually dine alone here and sit at the bar with the newspaper (okay, okay, the crossword section). On weekdays, I have NEVER had to wait for seat. I've also walked down to Zell's with the intention of ordering to-go. Then I bring fresh coffee and breakfast back up to my apartment to surprise my boyfriend. NOTE: this is only a happy surprise if bacon is included, so let me say this one more time: THE BACON! THE COFFEE! THE FREE SCONES WITH SWEET, FRUITY JAM! At the least, give this place a try. If you're with a group, or it's the weekend, then sure- you'll probably need to wait a beat before a table clears up. But in the meantime, they've got sidewalk chalk and - yes - COFFEE! to keep you cheery and upbeat.

zells was just like mary poppins; "practically perfect in every way." i wonder what i could possibly say about zells that everyone hasn't said already. hmmmm. can't think of anything. i love the free tiny croissants you get with your coffee while you're waiting for breakfast. i love the coffee. i ordered eggs benedict and the benedict sauce was light with a hint of lemon and a ton of awesome. i didn't like the canadian bacon but that's not zell's fault. i didn't know i don't like canadian bacon. next time i'll ask for american bacon. my friends pancakes....they were ginger bread or pumpkin or something were amazing. the wait staff was friendly, fast and attentive. the location is beautiful with high ceilings and a comfy bench to wait on (they serve you coffee while you wait.) i love zell's and if you don't i'll eat my bunny ears.

Only one trip to Zell's so far, but we will be back! Delicious, speedy, and a super-friendly, laid-back staff that cares about the experience of the guest. Best gluten-free pancakes I've found in PDX, and the husband loves the scones. Delish!

Good breakfast food at a decent price for the area. Even though there was a line they had hot coffee and heat lamps outside so it really wasn't bad. Specialty pancakes were good enough that i did not need syrup and the fruit plate was substantial compared to what I have seen at other similar places.

Oh what to do... what to do... There are so many wonderful and loving reviews of this place, and I can see why. For one, the service was AWESOME. All smiles, fully on point, and working as a team, these servers made sure I had food and coffee, and nobody ignored me simply because I wasn't sitting in "their section". Awesome. The menu reads gourmet, but with a distinct homey/diner feel. This makes me very, very excited. After an ~45 minute wait (to be expected at 11am on a Sunday), the numerous and delicious sounding options were almost too overwhelming. Upon seating, you are immediately plied with fresh coffee and some hot, fresh scones. While not the best scones I have ever had, they were good, and free? That makes them taste even better. So, where did things go wrong? The food itself is actually pretty unimpressive. I ordered the corned beef hash, and it was actually just "beef hash", there was no corned-ness to be found anywhere. The beef could not have been brined, and I was very, very disappointed. Probably the worst version of this standard dish I have ever consumed, and on top of that, I had to ADD SALT - something that should never be necessary on a brined-beef dish. It wasn't intrinsically terrible (I did eat the whole plate), but they should call it something other than corned beef hash if they are not going to use corned beef. I felt like I was bait-n-switched! My associate Ryan ordered the chorizo omlet, which was my other choice on the menu, and his response was a resounding "meh". It looked tasty enough, but I guess it was missing some key elements. My rye toast, on the other hand, was delicious. Under-toasted, but delicious nonetheless. So, after such a disappointment, why the three stars? Well, the service, for one, was awesome. The prices, for two, were moderate. And finally? THE PANCAKES!! There were only 2 of us, but we ordered 3 dishes - the two mentioned above, and a stack of 3 lemon-cream/blueberry pancakes. Like a little stack of heaven on a plate. Some of the best pancakes I have ever consumed. With the 100% maple syrup? Y to the U to the M! We watched some other pancakes and waffles coming out, and I think the key at Zell's is to stick to items coming off the griddle, and avoid the egg dishes. I know that's a bold categorization after only having tried 2 of the egg dishes, but these were simple egg dishes done all wrong. The pancakes look fantastic. Maybe that's why the pancake section is at the top of the menu?? Hmmm... I can see the draw, but frankly, Zell's falls short where (at least for me), it counts the most. If you're going to go gourmet, you are going to compete with places like Mother's, which has the most transcendent egg dishes in this whole town. Your other option is to stay diner... and do the staples right. They seem to have taken it half-way from diner to gourmet here, and it just doesn't work for me. It is a welcoming and happy place, but lacking what I need (good, solid, egg dishes), I won't be waiting the 45 minutes again any time soon. I'll head down to Fat Alberts or Genie's if I want diner food, and I'll head to Mother's when I want gourmet. I have to say, though, I am super curious about the other pancake dishes here. If they're all as good as the cakes we ate today, then this place might merit another star. If I find myself back again, I will be hitting the griddle options hard.

My husband, baby boy and I went here for breakfast with some friends we were visiting in Portland. The kids were hungry and wait times were long at other restaurants, so we decided to go here. The scones were awesome and were nice to tide you over until the food came. The coffee was also great! I got the french toast which was nothing special, but my friend got the salmon benedict which looked awesome and my husband got the avacado, tomato, cilantro omlette which was great! Now that I'm done with the pleasentries, here comes the reason for the two stars.... Our party was made up of 4 adults, a six year old, and two babies (one is 11 months old, and one is 5 months ); Zell's charged automatic 18% gratuity to our bill. What???? That is ridiculous! Our waitress looked and acted like she just rolled out of bed and had a hangover, and we were checked on more by other wait staff throughout our time there, yet our space cadet of a waitresss got an automatic 18% tip she not only did not deserve for the service she provided, but we should not have been charged automatic gratuity in our party in the first place as two in our party were infants. Just bad business practice if you ask me. Neither us or our friends will be going here again.

This place was great for breakfast. I'd always heard of it but this was my first trip. They bring you scones when you sit down that are really good. All the food we had was great. Caryn's Salmon Eggs Benedict was awesome but they put huge pieces of salmon on it and it was a bit much. The salmon scramble I had was great.

WOW! I just ate breakfast here with my husband, it was the most pleasant experience in a restaurant I have had in a long time. The minute we sat down 2 fresh scones with homemade jam were set in front of us and they were warm, flaky and delicious. I had the brunch omelette with potatoes and my husband had the Eggs benedict with homemade hollandaise both were equally as delicious. The service was fantastic there were 3 people on the floor taking care of everybody and doing a great job. I am looking forward to bringing my family & friends here soon. Thank you to the staff at Zell's you made our normally "BLAH" Thursday into something very memorable.

We arrived around noon and the wait was very short. The food was delicious. I had the Gorgonzola, Mushroom and Thyme omelet. Fluffy, tasty and perfect. My friend had the Avocado and Bacon omelet and he said it was pretty tasty as well. So why 4 stars and not 5? While I didn't mind much, the service was pretty spotty and my friend was not having it. So much so, that he is stating he wouldn't go back even with the yummiest omelets ever. :-/

One of my faves. It's a classic and I always enjoy my meal. Highlights include Bacon, Tomato, and Avocado Omlette, the Huevos Rancheros, and nitrate free Corned Beef Hash. Always appreciated, the tasty little scones they serve when you get seated. Staff and service are always great here too.

Pros: For starters, the free scones are awesome. The wait to get in on a weekend morning is quite manageable. The cooks in the back are quick, and it's felt like I have barely got my order in by the time the food comes out. The food is great, I keep wanting to branch off and try new things, but the pancakes have been so reliably tasty. Cons: There aren't too many of these, more that there are a few nitpicks that I have. The service is pretty chill and laid back, almost to a point of not seeming all that attentive. I get that that is Portland's vibe, but I do appreciate when the waitstaff asks if everything is good after we are served our food. Case in point, my girlfriend's toast was not, well toasted, and the waitress didn't come by at all until much later on, too much later to really make it worthwhile to get it corrected. Last notes: The place is pretty small, and any group larger than 4 people will require some table jenga to make everybody fit.

Why should you go to Zells? You automatically get a scone & jam, pretty much when you sit down. Their food is delicious.. I'm a vegetarian and don't like eggs, so I usually go for the portobello scramble with tofu... They may have the best breakfast potatoes in town. Perfectly cooked with just the right amount of spice. The atmosphere is comfortable, and the service is friendly. Only downside - sometimes it is really busy on the weekends and you have to wait - but hey, it's breakfast in Portland, that's kind of par for the course - and they give you coffee while you're waiting.

Wow! I cannot believe I have never reviewed this place I love it so much! Many many times have I wandered in or ran in for a dependable amazing experience. The wander in has been the "Just moved here and desirous of a like home amazing breakfast joint" to a "Yep, that was me making out with the guy I wandered out of the party with on your door to the kitchen and now I am your first customer this morning." The run in being the To Go breakfast on short notice to running to work. The food: Always been sensational. Everything from your quality ham and green pepper Denver omelet to various options of home fries and scrambles with delicious drizzled sauces on the top. You may also opt for the Salmon eggs benedict (a favorite) or a puffed pancake with homeade apple topping. Delicious coffee (says a coffee snob) and every meal served with warm super delicious mini scones ready for your choice of marmalade or tasty razzberry jam. The Service: Fantastic. I believe two of the waitresses for sure are the gals that have been there since I moved here in 2004. They are always smiling and seem to like their jobs. Many times I have seen the staff here go out of their way for customers w/o asking. They are attentive even with the usual packed house. The wait: Has never been to bad but look forward to at least 5 minutes on up to 15 depending on where you are on the list. But you know... this is the good time to jaw with the other folks that are usually a hoot anyways. And they do have the coffee pot outside with cups and fixings for your waiting pleasure (they know what I like!) Bam! I'll be walking in the door tomorrow at this point. Girlfriend meet up just scheduled!

My sister and I have been on a quest to find the best Reuben - and Zell's offered me a new take on the Reuben this past Sunday - by adding some eggs. It was rye bread (but of course), and eggs scrambled with some pastrami, followed by some cheese (duh) and mustard sauce. The mustard sauce brought new enjoyment to my life (I've been a little bit of a mustard freak these days) - but really, it was not something that I'd had before on a Reuben, and it really worked. Served on the side was the sauerkraut and some potatoes. I don't even much like potatoes. The coffee is crappy, and waiting around is a little bit stressful when you're hungry and cold... one of the heating lamps was out outside, which did not help. But when you sit down you get a couple mini-scones and that will hold you over until the food comes out - kinda. Ambiance and wait staff is average, but it's amazingly not too loud for a small packed place. Overall very enjoyable experience - and I shall be returning for one of those damn fruit pancakes... with my own coffee in hand. Is that tacky?

Superb neighborhood cafe. Sunday morning had a big crowd. Coffee was very good and food was excellent. Portland cafe's face fierce competition and these folks know it. They offer pre-order scone biscuits and raspberry jam just to tide you over. Bacon was prepared perfectly per request and high quality cut. Huevos were splendid. Must go back soon!

Okay, you get scones when you order with delicious jam. They have the most awesome eggs benedict (with perfect hollandaise sauce), pumpkin pancakes in the wintertime, excellent coffee, newspapers to read while you wait, and special items that make you drool for the rest of your existence. Sometimes they have salmon benedict. Don't miss it if you like salmon. Also, the atmosphere is cozy as heck. It's reminiscent of the morning glow one might associate with a small cafe in a small town in the mountains. Portland does not get this 'morning glow' in the wintertime. Somehow, Zell's does. I'm not sure if it is the location, the color of the walls, the waitstaff, food or furniture, but Zell's has it. It's kind of therapeutic to go there in the winter because of this. And the crowd that goes there, especially in the early mornings, is often older. This makes for a more enjoyable, home-like experience. Sometimes it's just nice to be able to have breakfast without worrying about being ironic enough or awake enough or cool enough to hang out for 3 hours. Not that there's not any of that at Zell's, it's just that you go there to eat, you get fed well, and then you leave with a wonderful feeling in your stomach and mind. No need to overwork the breakfast experience. Zell's is cozy and delicious and warm and comfortable. Oh, and there's sidewalk coffee while you wait outside.

Rhubarb waffles! I pretty much love anything rhubarb and these waffles were above par. I have a constant craving for the tang of rhubarb. Layer that with real whipped cream, sweet syrup, and fluffy waffles and magic happens. Eye scrunching, shoulder dancing, humming goodness. I've also thoroughly enjoyed the lemon yogurt pancakes with blueberry compote. Delightful fluffiness! Delectable zing! I like them better than Jam's version. The huevos rancheros did not move me and I will travel far for a good huevos rancheros. I've recently decided I fall on the waffle side of the fence when it comes to homemade waffles versus pancakes, but like both equally when eating out. This might be worth discussing on the forums...

My daddy's old college buddies picked me up from the PDX airport and took me to Zell's Cafe as a "welcome to your new life in Portland" celebratory meal. Yah, I "moved" once again because I'm a BEST COAST slut. What else can I say? (Don't tell my bf, Hawaii though because I'm cheating on my hometown for 5 months). After being seated, scones with sides of butter and jam was given to us. The jam was delish btw. I ordered the Gorgonzola cheese, mushroom, and thyme omelet with wheat toast and one of my daddy's friend ordered the German pancakes. She loved her meal and so did I. The omelet was nice and fluffy with a tang of the Gorgonzola cheese on certain bites. IT WAS SOOOOOOOOO YUMS IN MY TUMS. The seating was a little tight but it made the restaurant warm and cozy, which was nice after freezing my butt off in the rainy cold Portland weather. Zell's Cafe had a really cool vibe to it and it has got me excited to eat my life away in the great Pacific Northwest. Will I come back? Duh. Hello, I'm the queen of breakfast foods. See you soon, Zell's!!

Second time here. The food is amazing! I was debating between the Asiago Spinach and Wild Salmon scrambles last time. They are both fantastic! The free scones are a nice touch. They are warm, flakey, and delicious!

The service is soooo nice and attentive. Food was good, I would totally go back. Pancakes did not make me feel sick after like most pancakes. Everyone working here looked Portland hipster so i was so afraid they would have weird attitude. Nope. They are charming, sweet and friendly. And they seem a little bit rainbow-family leaning. I really like that the food here is more normal. I hate the new hipster food. If that's what you're looking for, go to Tasty & Sons or whatever new slick place is out there. I like non-edgy breakfast.

Having been steered toward Zell's by our friend, a Portland native, three of us headed over to see if the hype was true. It was a Friday around 11:30, and we had no trouble getting a table. We sat down, and the busser brought us our menus, water, and free scones. And then we waited. And waited. And waited. Keep in mind, the restaurant was maybe half-full, and began to thin out shortly after we sat down. After about 7 minutes our waitress ambled up to the table and took our drink order - a coffee, a tomato juice, and a latte. We waited some more, and tasted our scones - which were good, moist on the inside but still crumbly. When our drinks finally came, ages later, they were plopped on the table with a "I'll give you a few more minutes" from the waitress, who ambled to the back, and stuck there for a while. The latte was the only drink I had an issue with - the espresso tasted burnt, and it was too bitter... it just comes with being inexperienced or not trained on how to work the machine properly. One of my dining companions remarked that the waitress was certainly taking her time, and read the entire sports section before she came back to take our order. I had the Farmer's Market Frittata, J had Salmon Benedict, and JD had the Apple German Pancakes. After our initial waiting, our waitress had another take over, and things went smoothly after we ordered. Benedict was good - the Hollandaise was fluffy, the salmon was nice and pink, and didn't taste too fishy. The english muffin could have been toasted a bit more, but overall the dish was good. Apple German Pancake was good, though I only had one bite because I wasn't in the mood for sweet. JD said it tasted just like apple pie, and he cleaned his plate, so I trust it was delicious. My Frittata would've been better if the veggies - zucchini, green beans - had been sauteed before.. they were a little bland. The grape tomatoes were mushy, and the garlic chevre had very little garlic flavor. Also, the eggs were a little on the dry side. I'm sure the B team was in because of the time we went, and I'm willing to show up on a Sunday morning with the paper, anticipating a long wait, but there are other places closer to me that I'd rather go.

Zells is a solid breakfast place. The cute atmosphere (cozy and warm, yet full of energy & interesting people) won me over, but the 10+ minute wait did not. I'm used to a wait for great brunch in Portland, but this food is not special or excellent in a way that is worth the wait. The complimentary scones & jam is a great touch, but the menu lacks originality. This is like an up-scale denny's, the food is very well-made but not exciting. If you are looking for a very simple & no-frills breakfast, Zells is your place.

Zell's has a very cozy atmosphere. I enjoyed coming here on a weekday for brunch, it wasn't too crowded and the food was pretty good. It wasn't omg wow screen door good, but it was decent and filling. The scones were excellent (and free!) and the jam served with them was tasty as well. I had an Irish coffee and it was good as well. Extra star for the scones :)

Zell's makes a mean eggs benny. They also have mean servers, but that's okay with me. I like a little beating every once in a while. I've eaten here twice and received the same sort of service, blissfully unaware, yet totally intentional, servers, amazing tea selection, delicious menu, and nice atmosphere. Any place that has thick curtains blocking you from the rest of the establishment the minute you walk in is kick ass to me. It's like walking onto a red carpet! Cha! The first time I came, they served little complimentary scones and jam before we got our food. The second time I came here they made a rude remark about Starbucks and didn't give us scones. Both times: superb food. maybe if I don't tip well, they'll be nicer? The old opposite approach! Ride your bike here and agree to sit at the bar. It's more than all right.

Loved the complimentary scone when seated! We were starving and this was a great way to hold us over until our bloody mary's made it out! The Bloody Mary was delicious and our request for extra spicy was a success! I had the German Pancake with the seasonal fruit which was pears. This was definitely one of the best German pancakes I've had in Portland. The pear slices were plentiful, I couldn't even eat them all. My husband had one of the scrambles which he mentioned being very good as well. A solid breakfast spot in PDX.

I think they make a mean fresh Hollandaise sauce. I love their Eggs Benedict. I'm not a fan of their potatoes, but I love the scones with the raspberry jam. My husband loves the Eggs Florentine. And they make a real German apple pancake that's just like my moms. The service is great the, the portions are great, they have a cupboard with baskets of kids toys and yeah you have to wait on the weekends but, it is worth it. The orange juice is fresh and yummy too!

Love the scones-for-while-you-wait. I've eaten here a couple times and figured out what my deal is with this place: get the things with interesting, more unique ingredients. The more standard stuff doesn't stand out from any of the places in the area where they'll cost less. It's still good, just a little disappointing.

Perfect for a weekday breakfast/brunch. Eggs Benedict were great, even the second half-portion I took home and reheated. Being delivered scones upon sitting down is an amazing treat, one I wish more places would emulate. Have had the gouda scramble (or some such), which was also good... as well as the tasty potatoes-as-side.

I read a lot of reviews and had high expectations. Unfortunately I was really disappointed. I took on the Reuben scramble with kraut. I love salami and eggs so this seemed like a good choice for my stomach(not my heart). The server forgot our order which made breakfast turn into brunch. They were very friendly and totally apologetic and I didn't let that ruin breakfast. When our food finally arrived it wasn't well put together. The eggs were too runny and the meat was really sub-par. My girlfriend got a simple breakfast with a couple eggs and bacon. It was just that. The bacon looked like it came out of a package and the eggs were just eggs. If you put eggs and bacon on a menu make it special. The bacon should be high quality, thick and flavorful. Add some flavor to it. Jalapeno, maple something! This could've been any average breakfast joint anywhere in the US. If you're looking for a unique experience go elsewhere.

A good standard. Not extraordinary, but never disappointing. I almost gave it three stars, but perhaps I don't think it's extraordinary because I've been going there for a couple of decades. For breakfast, I always go for one of their good scrambles (salmon, portabello). If I'm feeling melancholy at lunch time, their Portland Potatoes and a salad are my comfort food. By the way, I know everyone raves about their scones, but I never liked them; don't know what fat they use but it always leaves my mouth feeling like it's coated with something. But I don't need the scones to have a good meal. And in two decades I don't remember ever getting a bad one.

The "upon arrival" scones, herb potatoes and sourdough bread were great. The menu was pretty extensive with plenty of non-meat choices, and not outrageously priced. Pumpkin pancakes were still offered on 11/15. It was warm and inviting inside. So, OK. That all warrants three stars, I guess. (Maybe? It seems like it warrants more than two stars, as I certainly have experienced worse... Oh, the pressure... HEY YELP, I NEED A .5 STAR OPTION PLEASE. Ktxsbai.) But while the eggs were done nicely, the cheddar was just plopped down on the top and the plate heated to make the cheese melt, so that by the time I was halfway finished the cheese was completely unappealing. Really? You couldn't mix it in there so it would get all gooey as the eggs scrambled, and stay warm as long as the eggs did? Interesting. The coffee was terrible and the service was... distracted at best. I asked for rye bread and got sourdough, but by the time I noticed no one was to be found so I just ate the sourdough. (It was great, so no regrets, but still.) I won't be going back on my own dime, and I most certainly won't be waiting for a table here. Consider this 2.5 stars and add me to the disappointed ranks.

I wandered in, looking for a place with good, solid food, to offset the wicked headache I'd woken up with. And lo, I found exactly what I was looking for -- a lovely corner cafe, with simple and clean interior design, Johnny Cash on the radio, and friendly servers, refilling my coffee at every turn. And the food was quite good. It was solid, hearty, and just what I needed.

Somehow, when talking about Zell's, the phrase "just like mom used to make" seems like a disservice to this always-hopping breakfast / brunch shop. I mean, I love my mom, don't get me wrong, but I feel pretty safe in sharing this with you guys because the truth must prevail! (read: me madre is not exactly what one would call "net-savvy..." That, and she's back in Michigan, so I'm feeling brave.) Well, let's start at the very beginning. (A very good place to start, I hear.) My C.E.C. (Customary Eating Companion) and I decided to head to Zell's on her suggestion, having previously eaten there before. Her wild and lurid tales of "home-cooked breakfasts" in PDX intrigued me, though I must say, I was skeptical. I was born in Chicago, sure, but I was raised in rural Michigan, where breakfast is something of an artform. "Alright," I said gamely, "take me to this bastion of earthly delights." (Or something less lame.) Let me set the scene: it was a gloomy late morning, rainy and COLD. At first, I was a little put off by the sheer number of people waiting to get in. I looked around the corner to see if perhaps Dave Matthews' tour bus were parked alongside...nope. Just a shoddy puke-green Volvo. Now convinced that all of these people were waiting in the freezing weather for the food itself, I resolved to stay the course, though keeping my "you know, I think the Hot Cake House isn't as busy..." at the ready...you know, just in case. What a difference a couple of steps makes! "Whoosh!" went the heat lamps above us as we stepped under the small awning, and suddenly it was as if we had just been transported to the Bahamas! Now, I'm a huge fan of these lamps; I love being outside, and the wait was so much more comfortable with them turned on! Now able to engage in a proper conversation, we grabbed some of the coffee conveniently set outside, jotted our party name down on the waiting list (I thought about putting "Tom, party of FUN! XD" down, but wisely decided against it.) Energized by the magical energies above us and the soft lull of subdued conversation around us, it seemed like no time at all before our names were called and my C.E.C. and I were seated. Right away I could tell that this place belonged in another dimension: indeed, it was abuzz with so many interesting looking people and aromatic smells that one imagines Douglas Adams using Zell's as a template for his "Restuarant at the End of the Universe!" Even so, it takes on the old-town charm that most old towns don't even have anymore, and certainly offers even better service than I have EVER known in the country. About that: our waitress was so friendly that I almost asked for her number - I mean, it was like being welcomed to a really chill party. They are so exuberantly happy there that I lack English adjectives to make my point with any real degree of accuracy. When we placed our orders, the food came out soon after, and let me tell you something - it was DELICIOUS! I ordered the salmon scramble with a side of avocado - what I got was enough salmon to start my own fishery, set atop eggs so fluffy and beautifully golden that I needed sun glasses to look at them! The avocado, neatly sliced into several pieces was an amazing compliment. Combined with the free scones and jams, well...I don't know what they use on their grill to cook the food, but it produces a meal that is nothing short of extraordinary... Then, the moment of the check. Two people, stuffed to the brim, smiling stupidly to one another from total satiation? Surely such a feast would come at a dear price...? Well, $14 later, we were all set and heading away, singing Zell's praises. I would say it's pretty safe to assume that I recommend this place with great enthusiasm!

I am never disappointed at Zells. The food is always fresh and made to order, the portions are generous, and the service is great. It is a perfect neighborhood cafe, with all of the charm, hospitality, and down home goodness you could possibly want. Sometimes I wake up in the morning and I just CRAVE Zells...the scones with fresh jam, the comforting thick coffee, and the creative twists on classic American bistro fare...perfect for a late Saturday brunch or mid week lunch on a day you play hooky from work. My only complaint would be that it gets unbearably crowded on the weekends, so crowded that you can't get a seat for over an hour, so don't go too hungry, this is not the place to get seated right away. But if you can go during the week, or wait until the brunch rush is over, you'll be happy you did...it's great!

Zell's is a neighborhood spot serving up food that is tasty, and like The Big Man said, "What you see is what you get." In other words, there are no surprises, and for some, this is exactly what they want. Not everyone wants to be surprised over their eggs & coffee. Stuart had the 2 2 2 Special, which was 2 pancakes, 2 eggs, and 2 (veggie) patties. I had the Veggie Satay, which was a huge mess o' fresh vegetables in a peanut-ty sauce with either a choice of rice or tofu. I opted for the tofu. It was tasty & more than enough for me. I'd return for this. I also had some very good grapefruit juice. Stuart proclaimed the coffee "pretty good" which is high praise coming from him. I doubt that I'd make a special trip across town to dine here, nor would I wait in line, but on a weekday mid morning, this is a fine place to enjoy some good quality food. Worth a visit.

I reviewed this place last year but didn't really write much. I now think that I will become a regular at Zell's simply because it is very good. Everything I have eaten here has been delicious, and it's close to my place so I can walk off whatever I just stuffed myself with. I had those aforementioned huevos rancheros again, and they were just as good this year as they were last year. Last time I went there, I got the corned beef hash- it's made right there and is way, way better than the canned stuff I used to eat. I don't think I can touch a can of that stuff again. I saw there were bacon waffles on the menu; must investigate...

You know this is a great local place. My morning glory tea came in a HUGE french press, so I was able to get 3 great cups without waiting. This is smart. The cajun chicken sandwich was tasty, too. The staff was friendly and prompt. Well done, Zells. A good place to meet for lunch in Portland.

I've ate here almost every Sunday since I moved to Portland 3 years ago. I love it, it's bohemian, but clean and kept well. Great staff, almost like they've been trained to blend with the amazingness of the place :) Highly recommended for breakfast lunch and brunch. Highly! One of the best, whether you're going to that morning after date or just bringing your dad along, it works both ways.

We came here this morning for Sunday breakfast. The place was very busy; I wouldn't say "packed", because that gives the impression that it's difficult to navigate through all of the people. Anyway, there was most definitely a wait.. we had to wait outside in the rain for roughly 15 minutes, but I had on a hooded rain coat, plus they serve coffee outside for waiting patrons and have heaters turned on, so it wasn't really an inconvenience for us. As the other reviewers have noted, free scones the minute you sit down! Awesome. Anyway, down to the good stuff. I had the eggs benedict and my boyfriend had the Portland potatoes and added tofu. I'm pretty picky when it comes to hollandaise sauce, and Zell's sauce was a bit on the thin and buttery side, but the dish as a whole was GREAT. So delicious. I can safely say that today is the first time I've eaten eggs benedict for breakfast and NOT walked out with a huge food coma. Their Santa Fe potatoes are also excellent. They don't look like anything extraordinary to the naked eye, but oh man are they delicious and perfectly seasoned (especially when you add a little Tapatio like I did!). Their $4 mimosas were also another great addition. They use Andre sparkling wine (pretty standard brand for a breakfast joint to use for mimosas), but the OJ made it. I only drank one and left with a nice little buzz. :) We will definitely come to Zell's again.

I've been here numerous times and have never been disappointed. Yes, the wait can be a pain, especially on a weekend morning. But if you can persevere through that, the wait will be well worth it. Firat of all, I absolutely love (and crave) their miniature scones that they give you gratis, pre-ordering. They are light, crumbly and moist and their apricot jam is amazing--giving me flashbacks to the apricot jam my mother would home-make when I was a kid. Very good stuff. Also, they have booze(!). I love me a mimosa or bloody mary with my breakfast and you can get them here. As pointed out by others, the coffee isn't incredible, but completely drinkable. The food is always solid. They have a wide range of sweet and savory options, with daily specials listed on a chalkboard on the wall. Sometimes service can be a little on the slow side, but it's never risen to the level of frustration while I've been there. Definitely one of my favorite places for breakfast.

Can I just tell you how much I love seeing a huge line outside but managing to get seated in a relatively quick order? Let me tell you, I love (italicize the love if you will) it. I get that is not always possible. I get that there are so many tables. But when it does happen, it is just so wonderful. I also had a German Pancake for the first time, it was good. Tasty, kind of eggy for me, that's a preference thing though. The fresh fruit on the top though was killer! I mean I get it any (italicize) restaurant can do fresh fruit on the top and all but this was just better. I didn't even need syrup. I love it when someone feeds me something where I don't need the syrup. Like having coffee and not needing the creamer. Service was excellent. Water glass nor coffee cup was ever empty (really just about the only thing I care about when it comes to my waiter) and super cheerful. Next time I'm trying the eggs benedict, I was sorta jealous of the couple next to us.

I tried Zell's with much anticipation one weekend afternoon. We arrived 10 minutes before they closed (at 2pm) and the host said we could wait for a table since it seemed several would be ready soon. It took a long time for teh server to clear her dirty tables and we werent sat until after 2p.m. Our waitress seemed pissed that she had to serve us. She was not friendly and never brought us our drinks. I had to ask the expediter who brought us our food to check on our drinks. She also gave us our check before we received drinks or our food. At the end of the meal my boyfriend was trying to be chatty and made a comments about how the place cleared out. At this point she took the liberty to mention that when we came in they were actually closed in what I considered a rude tone of voice. The food was good but there are so many other good breakfast places in Portland that I would rather eat at knowing I will have a nicer server. if you want to close at 1:50, close at 1:50. Don't get upset that someone came in before you were closed and make them wish they never decided to try the place. I don't think I'll go back any time soon.

This place is good! Pro's 1. Good ingredients. 2. Lot's to choose from, both standard and specialty items. 3. Serve buttermilk biscuits prior to meal. 4. Very friendly staff. 5. Nice atmosphere. Con's 1. A bit pricey for breakfast, considering there are a million places to eat. 2. Single Room, can get loud. Especially if children are present. (YUCK!) 3. Cream was not fresh, and created some floaters in my coffee, but the server corrected that immediately!!!! My overall experience was very pleasant and I would recommend trying this joint if you haven't already!!!

If you're thinking about going out to breakfast on the weekend, this should be near the top of the list. Food is always really fresh, tasty specials, coffee is good and self-serve. Waits aren't too bad, esp. if you're willing to sit at the bar. I've always been happy with everything I've ordered, but the corn flake french toast was the best. It's not on the menu anymore, and am bummed. Tell them to bring it back! Let's start a movement! What do we want? CORN FLAKE FRENCH TOAST!! When do we want it? NOW!!

Well, firstly- I don't know what all the excitement about Zell's is. It's a perfectly nice place to eat and the workers are so very nice and friendly. But I have no idea why this place gets so packed. Eating as a vegan, the options are very limited- but the food is good, nonetheless. I came in during their lunch(?) rush. It was a bit loud for me, but that's just my taste; I like quiet atmospheres. I have nothing negative to say about Zell's (minus those heavy curtains in the doorway- what's with those?), but I'm clearly missing what all the commotion is about.

Ok - first they give you scones as an appetizer (nice) They use Oregon chai (star #2) They have rotating specials and regular french toast (#3) Really nice waitresses and quick service (#4) And, cute built-ins - I mean how can you not love a place that used to be a pharmacy and now serves breakfast - (that's right - star #5)

I went here for Sunday breakfast with some friends after seeing some of the nice reviews here--and they had pancakes. Sunday morning breakfasts require pancakes! You can see their menu here: menupix.com/portland/res… ; Well, they did not disappoint. The staff was friendly as pleasant as they handled the waiting crowd. And after a typical 30 minute wait, we were seated and enjoying their nummy scones [another reason I chose this place]. We ordered tea, the Brunch Omelette with a side of buttermilk pancakes (yes!), the Baked Salmon Benedict and the Greek Omelette. The food came pretty quickly--although they nearly forgot my pancakes [blaspheme]! Everything was really good. First time I'd ever had pancakes with cornmeal in the batter, but it was surprisingly tasty too. The portions were very good for the price and I managed to take the extras home with me. The atmosphere was really nice and despite the semi-close quarters the noise level was decent. Couldn't even hear what the people at the table next to me were saying...not that I was trying to eavesdrop or anything... All in all. I'll be back.

I'll admit, I have some weird habits and practices. I love my weekend breakfasts, but I also have a serious sweet tooth. I try to create balance by having a healthier/proteiny breakfast one day and some sugary/carby goodness on the other. I keep vowing to order a scramble at Zell's, but those griddle options always call to my vice: gingerbread waffles with pear glacé, swedish crepes with fresh strawberries and whipped cream, and pancakes topped with raspberries, marionberries and powdered sugar...I just can't resist! Every great Zell's experience starts at the sidewalk, where you're sure to wait but at least there's a warm pot of coffee to keep you company. Once seated, you're presented with two fresh-from-the oven mini scones. Because I'm a hermit, I go to breakfast with a book. On my last visit, my food was out before I had finished two pages...I'm not a speed reader, but that's pretty dang fast. And then that fruit, I have never found anything so fresh and tasteful in any grocery store. Zell's ties it all together with a full bar, quenching your thirst with whatever beverage you're craving be it alcoholic, caffeinated, or both (or neither, I suppose). Sigh...if I were a restaurant, I would propose marriage to Zell's.

Sublime. Superb. The breakfast joint I've been searching for since I moved to Portland. My daughter actually stopped reading her book to enjoy the food and that's saying something people. Flaky, delicious scones. Worth a trip just for the scones. Nice, attentive staff too.

I had the perfect experience here this morning. I shared the Gingerbread Waffle topped with pears and a portabello mushroom scramble. They were a perfect combination and reminded me that I need to make Zell's a regular destination when going out to breakfast with friends. The little biscuits they serve you were a little dry, but the delicious marmalade and raspberry jam more than make up for it. It's a small place that gets busy very quickly. I'd aim to go before 10:00 or else you'll find yourself waiting around for awhile. Definitely worth it, but who likes to wait? I only have experience with this place on the weekends, so maybe you won't run into a line during the week.

I found this place on yelp during a visit to Portland and I was extremely excited to try it. The food was great. I had the waffle with pears and pear and ginger sauce and my sister had huevos rancheros. The scones, jam and coffee...awesome!!! My ONE and ONLY complaint is about the "busgirl". EXTREMELY RUDE. It appeared as if she hated her life, and apparently us. She uttered maybe 3 words to us the whole time. Would not reply when we thanked her for refilling our coffee and cracked a half a second fake smile one time. She did however talk to other customers and actually ask if they wanted more coffee before she poured with a smile. I dont know what her deal was but she put a HUGE damper on our experience. All other servers were pleasant and nice.

What a great little breakfast spot! A bit of a wait outside, but they have nice heaters to keep you warm. Great coffee, a nice menu, and great daily specials make this the kind of place you wish was around the corner from your house! Check it out for yourself!

Zell's is a the kind of place that you look forward to going to when you're in the middle of the work week and thinking about what to do for the weekend. It's got that cozy familiarity and the breakfast foods are well worth the sometimes curiously long waits for a table. Fortunately, they offer self-serve coffee to pass the time and keep you warm! And once you get a table, the scones are a perfect welcome - warm, buttery, and flaky. The menu is full of sweets and savories. The lemon yogurt and blueberry pancakes work - they really do! - tart and sweet and moist. The regular corn meal / cake flour blueberry pancakes are fanstastic too. Zell's is the perfect start to a weekend day.

I had a flawless brunch here one beautiful summer morning. We sat outside, checking people out, shaded by the trees, loving life. I got a special that was delicious and unusual; zucchini pancakes (like a potato pancake, with zucchini) topped with red pepper sauce with eggs. Service was excellent and the coffee kept coming. The only thing keeping me from a 5-star rating is that Mr. T was just a little less impressed with his food. He had an egg sandwich and he thought the egg a little slimy for his tastes. But he said he'd definitely go back. We'd both return to try to apple pancake.

Best mini scones! I went there for breakfast Sunday (and many other Sundays). There is a little bit of a wait but they have a bench inside and a couple of chairs outside and you can pour yourself a cup of coffee while you wait ($2). They reward you for the wait (never had to wait more than 15 or 20 minutes) by bringing each of you a plate with two free scones. I think this is the best part of the meal (and perhaps the primary reason I come here). I had the smoked salmon scramble with potatoes and took half of it home for dinner. It was about $20 for two of us. The staff is usually pretty friendly (there is one woman there who always has this serious scowl on her face and even she had a smile that day) and anyone will take your order or help you instead of just saying "let me get your waiter" for you. The food isn't gourmet--but it's a great diner type place. Did I mention the scones?

I find Zell's confusing. I've been there maybe 5 or 6 times, and every time has been solidly good- have had eggs benedict, chorizo scramble, huevos rancheros among others, not to mention the myriad scrambles my boyfriend has ordered and I have tasted. All good. Great scones with raspberry jam (the best jam flavor, as everyone knows), there's coffee outside if you have to wait (sort of a Portland breakfast standby, but I still appreciate it), and unlike some unfortunate reviewers, I've had good service at Zell's. Except today, I had probably the worst breakfast ever. It was, allegedly, corned beef hash. Now listen. Corned beef hash and I go way back. I like to think I know what corned beef hash is supposed to taste like, and this was corned beef hash like a vegan hot dog is a hot dog. First- I don't think the meat in it was corned beef at all. It tasted more like bad leftover pot roast, stewed into sad, stringy, gray oblivion. And the potatoes with it were exactly like if you left frozen hash browns to thaw, and then warmed them up in the microwave - grainy, mushy, also sort of gray. I think I spotted an onion or two in the 3 or 4 bites I managed to eat before I gave up and ate some of my boyfriend's asparagus, proscuitto and asiago scramble (delicious, by the way), but that was all there was. No seasoning to speak of. Not even salt. Not even copious amounts of Tapatio could save it. Eggs on top were fine, over easy. Eggs, unlike corned beef hash apparently, are hard to fuck up. I will come back to you one more time, Zell's, because I've had other great experiences. But as far as your corned beef hash is concerned, please visit Bertie Lou's in Sellwood to experience what corned beef hash is supposed to taste like.

Last Sunday, the clouds parted after a month-long hiding spell and waking up felt more like a blessing than a chore. And that always means one thing - brunch time! I'm not a hard gal to please. Give me coffee and potatoes upon waking and I may not bite you. And I would never bite anyone at Zell's. The service is always great, and the food makes my tiny heart sing a big song with clever rhymes. Salmon with lime and cilantro, eat it pronto. Happy moans to complimentary scones. Portland potatoes with seasonal veggies, sitting on bar stools gives me wedgies. Sorry, I'm done now. The only drawback is that, especially on the days the Sun Gawds choose to favor soggy Portlanders, you should expect a line. And if you go with just JB as I usually do, you can sit at the bar and potentially shave 15 minutes or more off your wait. But if you go with a group bigger than two, be prepared to tell your stomach to hush for a bit. But once you're seated in this light-filled and cozy space, chugging a beverage of your choice, you won't be sorry.

Its a typical Saturday morning breakfast in Portland . Typical if you're like me and eat breakfast out all the time and know that in Portland -on a Saturday- breakfast will be like this: *You will wait. You just will. Don't put your name on the list and then leave to try and get in somewhere else, because the list actually moves pretty fast. And its a small place, so you'll wait outside. Dress warm (its Portland, you know that) but they have coffee on a little cart outside the door so you can at least have a warm beverage. *Your party has to be present to be seated. Thank the stars the waitress and nice and believed me when I said my friend was parking at the very moment she called my name. She was right across the street, but I have had other experiences where they will not even talk to you about seating unless all are present. *The food is amazing. I don't know if they vegan or vegetarian options (yes, I live in Portland and am a carnivore - gasp and judge away.) but they do have eggs benny in like three different options. I ordered the baked salmon benny and I'm pretty sure they brought me the entire fish. Wow. *The service was spot on. Bitters and soda? Sure, coming right up (no weird looks like I normally get!). When I finished said soda, two seperate waitresses asked me what I was drinking and if I wanted a refill! TWO! And the food came shockingly fast! So fast that my friend and I hadn't even had a chance to start catching up when we were already finished with brekkie. Thankfully the service was so great they didn't seem to mind and they just kept refilling our coffee while we talked. It wasn't typical in that I do think the service was better than some other places - despite the fact that they are busy. You even get these yummy scones while you are menu browsing! The place is small and it was really loud in there. Oh and the pricing is less expensive than some other popular breakfast spots. Zell's probably won't become an every weekend spot for me, but this weekend it gained a spot in the top five. And I have a feeling it will stay that way.

WOW!!! Okay let me breakdown my breakfast experience for you. Breakfast places have a few things they can do to make or break it. Pre-Game) The wait was a little long for two people, but understandably so. 1) OJ. Good. Not the best I've ever had, but if it says fresh squeezed on the menu it better have pulp in it (and it did). 2) They give you these yummy little scones while you're waiting for you food. The butter for these scones is soft (which I am partial to), and the jam looks like homemade. YUM... 3) I read the other reviews on here bragging that Zell's has the best Eggs Benedict. I am here to tell you that it's TRUE! If you are an Eggs Bennie connoisseur then you know how a good traditional Hollandaise should taste. It should be buttery, and a little tangy; Zell's hollandaise was just that. The english muffin was griddled instead of toasted and the Canadian bacon was off the grill as well. 4) The potatoes were also the perfect compliment. Delish. Everything was completely worth the 5 stars.

Fantastic breakfast place, I loved it. Super veggie friendly menu which is always fantastic to see! Zell's had the coolest daily specials I have ever seen! There were at least five items just on the daily specials menu that I wanted to order. I settled for a brie, scallion, and tomato scramble with wheat toast and breakfast potatoes. I was initially dubious about how well the brie would mesh with the egg and the other ingredients but it turned out to be fantastic. The taste of the brie was a perfect match to the egg, scallions, and especially the tomatoes. So very good! The wheat toast was delicious and the breakfast potatoes were incredibly good. They were spicy, they must have had quite a bit of pepper mixed in with them although Paul thought they may have had a bit of Tapatio thrown in. Paul got corned beef hash with over easy eggs. He loved the hash but wasn't thrilled about the eggs but to be honest, he is actually not a huge fan of eggs. He wanted me to mention that he gave Zell's a huge thumbs up for having Tapatio on each of the tables, he thought that was great. The little biscuits that they give you when you first sit down were awesome, although I am not sure why they call them scones. They didn't seem like scones to us but whatever they were, we enjoyed them. I can't wait to move to Portland so that I can go to Zell's all the time. The folks that work there were incredibly warm and welcoming and everyone else that was eating there just looked perfectly content and happy to be there. Portland rocks and actually so does Zell's!

Zell's is like that one friend everyone has - the friend that, the morning after a night of willfully excessive alcohol consumption, is the only one to miraculously have avoided a hangover. And while everyone else is staggering to their feet, holding their miserable heads and grasping blindly for aspirin, they're the friend that has thoughtfully made a pot of coffee and a plate of toast, and helps you look for your cell phone in the back yard. To get even more warm & fuzzy, Zell's is a little spot o'sunshine on the dreariest, wettest, coldest of Portland mornings. Their chorizo gravy is ama-zing, as are their delightful tiny scones, their super filling pancakes, and their mouthgasm-inducing potatoes. Oh my GOD, the potatoes... if I happen to order a dish that does not come with a side of these babies, I consider it my due right to steal some off a friend's plate. And the staff? These guys are the embodiment of a big, cheesy, post-hangover group hug.

Brunch done right! Zell's is a wonderful place to grab a bite to eat on a Sunday morning (or anytime I would imagine) and the size of the crowd does attest to this. When you arrive look for the seating sign up sheet outside by the coffee. Jot your name down and grab a cup of joe while you wait for the next table to open up. After being seated you are given a couple of mini-scones to sate your appetite a bit while you peruse there wide selection of daily specials and the regular menu. I enjoyed a wonderful egg scramble with prosciutto, asparagus and asiago cheese with an english muffin and coffee. Everything was great. My friend ordered something a bit odd in my book, waffles with bacon mixed in, but they said it was delicious.

I am standing on my soapbox today, to profess my dislike of Zell's! After moving a couple of blocks away from Zell's, I was very excited to try it and make it my new favorite breakfast place. Boy, was I dissapointed after eating there for the first time. The eggs for my omelet were runny, the scone was gross, and just about everything else there was marginal at best. Maybe I need to try something else, but after one meal, I haven't returned in over 6 months! I would rather drive to Cricket Cafe than stumble to Zell's. It's a sad day when a person like myself, who LOVES to eat, is dissapointed by a meal. I think the last time I had a meal this bad was when my mom tried to invent something called Porcupine Balls when I was 7. This is my warning to you all: try Zell's at your risk.

I think this may be my favorite place to go for breakfast in the SE. I went here for the first time this last week and I was really impressed; not only was the service great, so was the food! We had to wait about twenty minutes for a seat (which wasn't bad since there was a big pot of coffee outside), but it was well worth it. There was a pretty big menu plus there were about 10 different "daily specials" too. I ordered a pesto quesodilla with black beans, eggs, and pico do gallo; it was the perfect amount of food! The GOOD: atmosphere, serves booze, prompt friendly service, lots of specials. The Bad: nothing really.... lets get some specials.

A friend and I came here for Sunday morning brunch. Fortunately we only had to wait about 10 minutes, although the line had gotten pretty long by the time we left at 10:45. The appetizer scones and blackberry jam were quite delicious. I requested a buttermilk waffle sprinkled with powdered sugar, with whipped cream on the side, and it was scrumptious. Would definitely come back here.

Any breakfast place in Portland worth its reputation must be worth the wait, so expect to linger outside Zell's for awhile before being seated. Generally packed on the weekend, Zell's serves up traditional brunch fare with a classy touch--the addition of brie to an otherwise normal scramble made my breakfast feel fancy, and the delicious scones served with your pre-meal coffee felt European. Zell's has all the elements of a good Portland breakfast should have--long wait, good coffee, and incredible food.

Great Breakfast. I had the Bacon, Avocado, Tomato Omelette special & it was divine. That with the Zell's diced potatoes & the free scones & you got a great meal. Only thing lacking was the Bloody Mary, I like some veggies on top to compliment the Mary & the mix was so-so. Overall though my Zell's experience was superb & I will definitely be coming back again for their amazing food.

A local on the plane told me about Zell's and said I must go for breakfast, but the lines would be long. He was right...but it didn't matter. I crave and often try to replicate the avocado bacon omelet that I had not once, not twice, but three times on my weekend trip to Portland! The scones and jams on the table satisfy you while waiting and the coffee is strong and heavenly.

I was fairly excited about this joint. I love diner grub. There aren't a lot of things I care about at diners. Great service? Not absolutely necessary. Just refill the cup of coffee and bring the food. Fancy decorations? I care more about the food, coffee and seating space. Zell's has paid extra-close attention to service and decoration. Staff was extremely friendly and informative. The joint was classed up with a nice bar, huge mirror, fancy seats, decorations on the walls, t-shirts to purchase, yadda yadda. I just wish the food was on par with the ambiance. The coffee: It's cool - they give you free coffee while you wait outside. The thermos empties fast (I mean, FAST), so shove your way up front and grab a cup while it exists. It helps to have someone outside to converse with. Coffee isn't the greatest flavor. Just diner coffee. For some reason I expected Stumptown on drip. That would have significantly improved my receptiveness to this joint. They class it up inside as being fancy and gourmet. Why not match it with a decent coffee? It's the little things... The food: Chorizo omelette with potatoes. Chorizo itself was decent - doesn't match the best I've had - but far from the worst. Everything was mixed in, cheese was melted throughout. What bummed me out was the sour cream. Very liquid, slightly runny. I'd rather have my sour cream on the side than mixed into the omelette by the kitchen. I enjoy applicating the cream on top of my omelettes, as it helps keep a thick consistency with each bite. I probably should have ordered it on the side - I assumed that's how it would come. My bad. The flavor of the omelette outweighed the consistency and texture. Potatoes are potatoes. The scones were ok. I like biscuits more - easier to apply gobs of butter and jam. I enjoy my butter pats slightly melted and gooed into the jam. Sounds gross - but tastes wonderful. Just not possible on a tiny scone. Lemon-Yogurt-Blueberry pancakes: Pretty awesome. The syrup was fantastic. One pat of butter and a canopy of syrup to follow made these pancakes heaven. These are not your mom's kitchen pancakes. Not big and fluffy. They are half the thickness and cooked slightly longer to a dark-brown tinge. But they soak up that syrup and butter oh-so well. Blueberries seemed very fresh. Hands down the best part of the meal. So, was it worth the 45min wait? No. Am I glad I at least tried this joint? Yeah. I probably won't be returning anytime soon. I'll stick to Fat Alberts - or give Cricket a shot. Shorter wait for the rest of you!

Cute little cozy spot. They seriously fit as many people in here as possible which makes for a little claustrophobia to kick in but the food was well worth it. Not a fan of the grandma coffee cups but thats my only complaint which is pretty much a compliment. Anyway.... food was your typical Portland breakfast food but sometimes thats just what your looking for. Oh and of course as everyone else has noted...the scones were an added bonus that truly lived up to there name. I give this place three stars. Not perfect, not great, but not a disappointment?

Ah, memories of my summer vacation in Portland. Hangover cure breakfast at Zell's, followed my more drinking and shuffle board next door at Hal's Tavern. Ah. A wonderful, comfy atmosphere and a varied, unusual menu with heaps of good coffee. I don't even remember specifically what I ate there (went there twice - 2 days in a row), but it was good and hearty. Great people watching opportunities also, if you're into that kind of thing. Highly recommended.

My recent winter weekend in Portland rendered me in a food coma. I'm surprised the plane didn't fly lopsided on my way back to the Bay Area after a weekend of hearty food and sweets. My pal Greg, now a PDX local, suggested Zell's for Sunday Brunch, as it was also somewhat of an annual reunion with my high school pal, Jen, and her hubby Chad. We enjoyed freshly baked mini-triangular biscuits, dolloped with amazing berry and apricot marmalade. The coffee was surprisingly good and the staff had an eagle's eye on ones cup when it was ready for a refill. The eggs benedict looked and smelled amazing. Unfortunately I can't describe them since Greg woofed the plate down in a few minutes. I had the BEST corned beef hash ever. Zell's doesn't use the canned kind or the really fatty and over-meaty kinds other places use. Instead it's a nitrate-free corned beef (I bet the cows they use are totally on the Atkins- this beef was way lean) and they top the layer of sliced corned beef with perfectly golden hash browns, topped with two flawless sunshine eggs. Another plus is that their menu seems to be quite vegetarian and vegan friendly. I'm definitely going back next time I'm in PDX!

Zell's is my boyfriends favorite breakfast place to go to. They serve their breakfast and lunch options the whole time they are open, which I love because I hate having to maneuver my way around menu times or what I can and can't order at the time I arrive. I always order their salmon with vegetables and saffron rice topped with hollandaise sauce and my boyfriend gets their bacon waffle. Friends have told us that the german pancakes are absolutely amazing! The staff is friendly and I enjoy going there.

Love, love, love their Egg's Benedict!! This is a really nice and cozy little cafe with really great food!! We don't come to Portland much but when we do I want to come to Zell's. They do get pretty busy on the weekends so be there early!! No matter how busy they get though, they always take good care of their customers! Can't wait to visit Portland again!!

I was so happy to have found Yelp before my recent trip to Portland. We found several spots to stop at that we would not have been able to find had we not browsed Yelp first. Zell's Cafe was one of those stops. We arrived on a Sat. morning about 8:30am and there were no tables available. No worries though, we just sat at the bar and enjoyed chatting with the friendly staff. My husband had the eggs benedict, and I myself enjoyed a spinach/tomato/bacon omelette. The service was quick, staff helpful and food delicious. The orange juice was good as was the scones they served as we waited for our meal. We ended up buying a t-shirt and taking a picture of the bar just so we would remember it. Thank you for the above reviews. It really helped make our single morning through Portland a enjoyable one.

I really wanted to like Zell's. I had read so many good reviews, seen the long lines, and I finally made it there today to try it out. The service? Just fine. The food? Eh. My chorizo omlette was pretty tasty, but boy, it was SO greasy. Now, I love the grease, don't get me wrong, but it was so oily between the chorizo and the cheese. I'm actually glad they forgot to put the sour cream on top, it would have been overkill. The accompanying potatoes were delicious though. My partner got an german apple pancake, but even that was just too much. Way too much cinnamon, so many apples, there was barely any batter. Overall, the menu just didn't really sound all that appealing. I would like to go back and try it for lunch, their sandwiches all sounded pretty good, but I'll go elsewhere for my morning meal.

I like this place. The lemon sour cream pancakes are to die for! And their warm scones...with raspeberry jam. Yum! And I love the way they serve their tea,in a french press.

I've been to Zell's more than once, and while all the options on the menu do sound appealing, it just doesn't work for a vegetarian-with-vegan-tendencies such as myself. First time around, I had a scramble (did I sub tofu? I can't remember if that was something they offer) that was decent, but I found myself longing for Jam's tofu scramble down the street. The next time I went, I decided to go all-out and ordered a German pancake, not fully knowing what to expect. It was gooey in the middle, like it hadn't been fully cooked. Yuck. I did like the petite scones they served in lieu of biscuits, and the tea french press my brother-in-law order was nifty. Also, on busy mornings they have coffee outside the door for the cold people waiting for a table. If I wasn't against eating eggs (or meat), I could see how this place would be enjoyable. They obviously put a lot of effort into the flavors of each dish, and keep things very simple in order to have those flavors noticed.

3 of us went Sunday for breakfast. They managed the line well there was a short wait. We had great fast friendly service. I had salmon eggs benedict. My friends had berry covered french toast and bacon avacado omette. All the food was amazing. I dont give 5 stars to many places but everything was perfect here!

Zell's is in one word amazing. The food is great, the staff is super friendly, and the restaurant is cute and homey. I love this place! It doesn't hurt that it's also right down the street:)

If you don't think this place is a gem, something is wrong with you! Cozy surroundings and great, fresh food. With so many places in this city blowing their own horns and delivering OK food at outrageous prices, Zell's stand out from the crowd. Unpretentious, delicious food......a neighborhood place that does things right.

The scones were awesome. The hollandaise on the eggs benedict was perfectly lemony and my eggs perfectly runny. I would come here every weekend if it didn't take so loooooong to get a table. Perfect for a weekday brunch.

they had me at the blackberry bellini.....delish rich coffee...delectable complimentary scones....very charming place and people.

This is a nice, simple place to get breakfast. The food was good, but not outstanding. I had the asparagus/asiago/prociutto scramble. The corned beef hash is really good. They also give you little scones before your meal, which I thought was a nice touch. The service was friendly. I'd go back, but I'd just as soon try some other places.

Zell's is an excellent brunch place in a town of brunchers, but somehow it's one of the less crowded. The crowd tends to be older, Times carrying types, and they look right at home eating toast at the dark wood bar. It's homey and old fashioned, like a comforting breakfast at an aunt's house. Pro Tip: To start out, get a plate of mini scones and spread the house jam on those warm triangles of goodness. This is an excellent diner for out of town guests. I make a point of bringing my parents in for eggs benedict or, even better, one of their creative specials. The logo is so adorable my mother almost bought a shirt last time. The menu tends towards high end American or German food---lots of potato pancakes, but also fun creations with nuts and corns.

Ohhyeahh, yeah, yeah, ohhhyou'resooooogoooood, Zell's! I would've been happy just eating a huge plateful of those little scones that they give you before your meal. Luckily, instead we ordered their breakfast specials of some chicken/bacon quesadilla thingy and banana pecan pancakes. Both were motherdunkin' awesomely delicious! SO worth the wait even on a weekend. Excellent service, too.

Great breakfast place. Friendly, nice atmosphere, yummy food... I would give it 5 stars if they stayed open until dinner. The free mini scones are a nice touch, and they have a fun menu.

"Is it possible to be TOO savory?" that was the question the mister posed over his brunch scramble this morning, as we tried to make our way through the enormous Zell's plates. "Hmm. This is why you were thinking Broder, huh?" Indeed. Zell's is really really good. Not remarkable, but really good. My eggs benedict tasted like an eggs benedict should, and yeah I know, if you don't want to be rolled out of a breakfast place don't order the freakin' eggs benedict to begin with, right? But this is the second time I've left Zell's feeling uncomfortably full, but vaguely dissatisfied... Both times I've just found it a bit one-note, and that note is 'heavy.' This isn't terribly nuanced grub. Oh, and for the record I think the celebrated scones are lackluster. Scones should bite you back a bit, take some work, and these are more biscuit-y than scone-y. On the upside: the bar is beautiful, the wait was minimal, the coffee was free-flowing, and the music (Coltrane today) was sublime.

One-word impression: SOLID I've been intrigued by Zell's for quite some time due to word of mouth, but I finally got a chance to check it out yesterday for breakfast. First, the decor was certainly classy, but inviting, and I was made very comfortable by the lovely waitresses tag-teaming to serve me. The scones that have become a signature part of their breakfast were alright, certainly nothing fancy, but nice and fresh. I ended up having the German Pancake with Rhubarb, and I must say, it was quite a unique experience. I'd never even heard of a German Pancake before then, but it was quite delectable and comforting, the way good pancakes should be. The rhubarb was a great complement as well, providing a sweet tartness that matched the intensity of the pancake's savoriness. Overall, a very good and satisfying breakfast with solid service and a warm atmosphere. I'll have to come back for some of the other food options, such as the Reuben Scramble.

Little bit of a wait on Sunday, but worth it...once you are seated the servers and kitchen staff are super speedy.

  • Brenda G.

The best things about Zell's were Reg, our waitress, perfect bacon, free mini-scones (like if were a Mexican food place and they gave you chips and salsa),and loose leaf tea served inn a French press. Having more than one cup of tea and not having to flag down the waitress for more hot water is a five-star feature. We went on a Monday morning at 10:30 and there was a 20 minute wait.

    (4)
  • Angela B.

My friend and I showed up at Zell's on a Saturday and expected such a long wait that we had a pre-breakfast before we left the house...that was a mistake! The wait wasn't nearly as long as other Yelpers have experienced, so we must have hit a lucky Saturday. We had the coolest seat in the house, right up at the bar where we could see all the action. The great thing about sitting up at the bar at a bustling breakfast place is that the coffee is right there whenever you need more. All you have to do is ask the guy/gal behind the counter to give you a refill instead of having to wait for your waiter to finally come back to the table. The food was incredible, amazing, delicious, cant-stop-craving it good! My only regret is that darn pre-breakfast of stale doughnuts and coffee...what were we thinking!

Yum! nice little scones while you wait for your order. Perfect benedict. Excellent smoked salmon scramble and the lemon yogurt buttermilk pancakes were delicious. I'm not a big potato eater, but my companions seemed to like theirs ok I walked right in and sat right down. The service was friendly. Also pretty good coffee and huge pots of tea.. a good solid breakfast cafe.

  • Alexis A.

This place was adorable. While you wait they bring you scones, which is great when you are famished but they were rather dry needing a lot of help from butter and jam. I ordered fruit and the german pancake - that thing was the size of a frisbee and had like two full apples on it. Needless to say I didn't make a dent. My friend had amazing chorizo omelette. The staff was very pleasant, I'd go again.

  • Christine S.

Zells' I think you are great. GREAT! After eating your tasty and nutritious omelet and scrumptious soft little scones I was happily full. But wait! An apple German pancake was just served at the table next to me. I was this close (holds up the pointer finger and thumb less than a millimeter apart) to ordering one to go just so I could try it. I remorsefully decide it would be best eaten fresh and warm so i will wait until next time. May I add that the waiters you have servicing inside your wonderful walls are quite divine as well. Thank you for the perfect morning eating experience!

Cute little place which greets you at your table with some delicious warm scones while you make your decision. Bloody Mary was just OK, but the corned beef hash was indeed very good. big chucks of real home-made corned beef, and well seasoned potatoes. I'd definitely go back.

  • Miz J.

I didn't mind the short wait in the drizzle, even with my broken umbrella-- the big pot o' coffee outside was good company. Inside, there's a short bar for solo/hungry diners & a comfy bench inside the front window where you can wait for your table and people watch. You'll find a cross-section of neighborhood folks here, toddlers to retirees, eating contentedly. We filled up on the house mini-scones & the cheesy, herb-flecked breakfast potatoes.

Good... but not great. The food is delicious but the problem is the service. I've actually been insulted on one occasion by the server. Often, they're just inattentive. But I like the atmosphere and the food, so it's worth going for that. I mean, if you live in Portland, you probably don't mind service a bit on the surly side, right?

I get happy thoughts just thinking about zell's. I have been there at least a dozen times; they have the most consistent service and quality of food. Definately a cut above in a city of breakfast options.

An oldie, but a goodie. Great, diverse menu -- something for everyone, including vegans and meat-lovers! Friendly, neighborhood vibe. Cozy atmosphere. Easily one of our favorite brunch and breakfast spots. Gotta love being greeted with hot coffee and warm housemade scones!

We went to Zell's after reading these great reviews and we were not disappointed! From the hot, strong, great coffee to the yummy little scones with jam everyone is right on when they rave about this place. The German Pancakes are quite filling and the bacon waffle...holy crap! We'll be back!

I've been in love with Zell's for over 25 years. Through all the owners, through the less than perfect (and short lived) dinner menu back in the Mid-80's. It's one of those local breakfast places that lives on and still has quality food and service. They've had their moments where things have slipped, but they've always managed to get back into the groove. If you're looking for a good breakfast (and don't mind a wait on the weekend) I recommend Zell's.

  • Joseph H.

This place could be built on breakfast, with big pillars of rolled up german pancakes and dining chairs of fine benedict. Alright, maybe my breakfast turned architecture analogy doesn't fit. The point is that Zell's is your breakfast spot regardless of what time of day you go. (they close at 2ish) When I worked nearby I attempted the lunch a couple times and found breakfast to be the life of their party. It's pretty easy to pick up on that vibe when you walk in and rated on our favorite first meal of the day they're a 5 star establishment. Their lunch, I could live without. Some of the best eggs in any form I've ever had. Ham benedict, Salmon Scrambles, and mushrooms tossed with eggs will satisfy even the heartiest of carnivores. The Kobos coffee flows like water, and even if you want stumptown, it definitely does the trick. The staff is friendly and distinctly portland. Where else are you going to find a man with a 5 inch beard and a v-neck flush with chest hair to his chin? It's all good, the beauty is in the food and it delivers. You feel right at home from the moment you sit down to whatever it is you're eating, and don't forget to check the board for specials! It's all good at Zell's, if you go breakfast, you can't go wrong.

it's by my work. it's not bad. but it's more that it's by my work. :) fills that need for florentine or some kind of random breakfasty thing once in a while. update 10/20/11: the staff is really really awesome :) and their soups are great.

My daughter said it best after our breakfast this morning: rather a glorified Dennys. She (the daughter) was visiting, and I told her that Zell's was well thought of as a breakfast destination. But, eek, the food was bad. One disappointment: FARM-raised salmon. Really? Right here in Portland, Oregon? I won't return, with guests or otherwise--

  • Emily B.

Zell's is a treat. The food is rich and amazing: omelets and dishes full of salmon and eggs and butter and potatoes and veggies. Coffee's great too. Only cons are the loooong wait for a table on the weekend and a breakfast tab of about $30 for two people by the time you're done. Very worth it every so often, though.

another "breakfast must" when i visit. good yummy hearty food perfect for a sunday morning after a saturday night of debauchery. and i don't mind waiting a little bit for a table. it's kinda funny, but being from SF i'm unfortunately used to the lines - good luck getting a table ANYWHERE on a sunday morning in SF unless you go at the butt crack of dawn, or wait an hour or more. i like going to portland b/c i actually get IN to places!

Zell's is a solid pick all around for a tasty, cheerful breakfast or brunch. I love that they serve you tiny biscuits right off the bat. I LOVE their Portland Potatoes, which is the kind of dish I would make for breakfast every day if I had the time and talent: potatoes, fresh veggies, herbs, and lots o' cheese, all tossed together in a big, just-greasy-enough-melange. I've had trouble ordering anything else, so I can't speak to the rest of the menu, but my fiancé had the Rueben Hash last time and loved it, and also enjoyed the Corned Beef Hash, but found the beef a tad dry. It was easy to shrug off, though, as we finished the meal with our wee biscuits topped with delicious raspberry jam. Their bloody mary is pretty good as well, served with smoky, spicy salt on the rim, though it only comes with olives, no veggies, which is half of what I love about a bloody mary. It packs a punch, though.

i never visited zells when i lived in portland, but fortunately i got to yesterday morning. this place has really unique breakfast options and specials, and the portland potatoes were the BEST hangover breakfast i've ever had... they're tasty and cheesy AND full of ACTUAL NUTRITIOUS VEGETABLES. friendly service and a nice setting and very reasonable prices.

We had brunch at Zell's today after reading the Yelp reviews, and I am disappointed. I put our 2 names on the waiting list, and they continued to seat everyone BUT us, and we watched them seat at least 5-6 parties before us. There was no excuse for that when we were only 2 people and had no preference if we sat at the counter, tables, or outside. Then after seated, we sat for 20 minutes watching everyone around us get the free scones (which is one reason we went to Zell's) and we had to ask someone else for them after clearly trying to get anyones attention. We were given a scone, but no butter or jam like we saw on everyone elses table. Just plain, dry. Our waiter was never seen at our table again after he took our order; and someone else brought out our food. We had no water refill, no coffee refill, no one came to check on us after our food. But our waiter was very quick to bring the bill. The food was okay, but very overpriced for what you get. I'd say its twice the price it should be. We weren't even treated with as much as "poor" service; we had NO service at all; and tipped accordingly. We wont be back, simply because of the (lack of) service.

hate the wait! but it's sooo worth it. once your seated the staff is friendly and efficient. the food has never disappointed, from great burgers to decadent salmon eggs benedict it's all great, plus you get scones to appease your tummy while you wait for your food. it's a small venue so it's not ideal for large groups but the staff is great at accommodating if you don't mind waiting and they have always been awesome when i bring my 2 young children in.

Weekends -- very crowded and don't expect to be allowed to relax for any length of time because when there are others waiting for a table, you WILL be asked to finish up your meal and depart. In spite of that little restriction, Zell's is a Portland treasure and serves breakfast entrees made with creative combinations that keep me wanting to come back for more. Brave the crowds and try one of the daily specials. You won't be sorry.

"Delicious Surprise" While looking for another establishment, we accidentally came across Zell's . This eclectic neighborhood restaurant is a delicious surprise. The corned beef hash, chorizo omelette and greek omelette are outstanding. The service is fun and efficient. A great Portland establishment.

The food here is absolutely f-in amazing. Seriously, everything we tried was just to die for. The latte I ordered had latte art on it in the shape of a bear whch I loved too! The only complaint is that it is sooooo hot in that restaurant on a hot day and there aren't enough tables. I wish they could expand a little bit to make it more comfy in there.

Great spot for breakfast! There was a line outside but it only took about 20 minutes to get a table. They serve everyone two mini scones which were really light and tasty. For breakfast our table had the frittata on the specials menu which had vegetables and goat cheese. Super tasty! Also at our table was an eggs Benedict, the Swiss omelet and the corned beef hash. No one left disappointed. Would highly recommend for breakfast!

This place was excellent! Pros: service is friendly; very accommodating--they split two meals between two people! Endless coffee supply and available outside while you wait!! Food was amazing! Chorizo omelette had excellent tastes and so was the French toast! Also their scones they serve while you wait have a nice flavor and come with yummy jam!! Cons: can be a long wait because they are so popular!

Love the feel if this place. Old school diner with a hip urban edge. Service was fast and friendly. The food, we ordered burgers and soup of the day was perfectly cooked and tasty. We will definitely come back to try their Salmon Benedict.

I LOVE ZELL'S CAFE! What's not to love about PASTRAMI SCRAMBLE on RYE with GRUYERE?! Probably my favorite brunch in Portland. They house cure the pastrami, and everything about it is just lovely. They pour a stiff mimosa, too. This is a standard breakfast cafe - nothing fancy and no $11 bloody mary's here. Just really, really damn good food and friendly service. And the best part MAY just be the free scones they give you when you sit down - they are buttery and flaky and delicious and come with some jam I just want to bathe myself in. Oh - and I even overheard a couple next to us who were gluten free and they brought them gluten free muffins instead of the scones - how cute! If you haven't been here for lunch, put it on your list. Scratch that - just go. Tomorrow. I don't care if it's a workday. Just go!

Fantastic little place on SE without the pretentiousness of other places somewhat nearby. I am gluten and dairy and soy intolerant and found a small handful of lovely choices for breakfast. But what I fell in love with was the French press of TEA made with KOBE, a locally produced tea, that was the best Earl Grey I've ever tasted! I'll be going back very soon :)

I wish they would just bring me a basket of those little scones and a tub of jam. Makes a happy tummy every time! This last visit, I had the chantrelle, leak and cream omlette-Outstanding. Decadent and delicious. My mouth is watering just thinking about it! Don't go starving-you can wait for quite a bit! Service is always quick and awesome and the food is always spot on! Love Zells!

We've been going to Zell's for over 10 years. We like the food there :) If you get there after 9:00 on a weekend, you will probably have a 20 minute wait, and it is noisy, but the food is fantastic. I like the Eggs Benedict, my wife likes the Salmon with pecan crust. On the weekend with the first Saturday of the month, they have Lemon Yogurt pancakes, which are my favorite.

I've been here several times for breakfast and it is always wonderful. The German Pancake, the French Toast, the Eggs Benedict...all amazing. There are always interesting specials and trying them is a great idea. Get there before 9:30 on the weekend and there won't be much of a wait. The staff is great, fast, helpful. I'll be back...

The free scones (!!) that we received at the beginning really started our day right. Those were *delicious*. We definitely want to come back here. I got the German upside down apple pancake thing, and it was good (and eggier than I anticipated) but I'd probably try something else next time. I also got a side of Morningstar veggie patties, which were good.

The service was alright, but the food was not up to par. I am not a very picky person when it comes to food, but this food was notably awful. I had the eggs Benedict and have never had an experience like that with a poached egg. When I cut into it, a flood of water came out, and the eggwhite was not even cooked. It looked like a giant lougie floated onto my plate.. not appetizing. Then there was the hollandaise sauce which tasted like it was made from a powder in an aluminium package from the store. Which was unfortunate, because the potatoes were really good. overall, wouldn't recommend or go back.

With so many diners in Portland it really takes a lot to stand out, but Zell's does. They have good, friendly service and you can expect to be acknowledged within 20 seconds of walking in. Complimentary scones with jam is a nice touch. Their food is better than almost any diner I can think of in Portland (except maybe Stepping Stone Cafe and Jam on Hawthorne), and their coffee is awesome! The baristas do a great job, my girlfriend is a barista and is always impressed with her latte. They haven't disappointed so far. Check this place out!

Was there this morning at about 11ish and there was a fair bit of a queue but we got our seats in about 15 or so minutes. Phew! Was starving! Zell's cafe is one quaint and cosy cafe serving hearty American brunch; think pancakes, waffles and awesome eggs! Service was prompt and food came without too long a wait, something I appreciated, being as hungry as I was. And they start u off with their lovely miniature scones, which were so good! I had the breakfast omelette, that was packed with ham, harp cheddar cheese, scallions, , mushrooms and potatoes (u could opt for toast too), and the mister had the baked salmon benedict. Both were great and we enjoyed every bit of it. It was a really enjoyable brunch and I think I was sold when I took a bite into their scones! Will definitely be back!

We had breakfast here on Saturday. We were visiting Portland and in a "foodie" city this was our best meal. They have the "wait" thing figured out. We had to wait about 20 minutes, but they had a serve yourself coffee station set up that they kept refreshing with hot coffee. This soothed the savage caffeine beast while we were waiting. The second we sat down they had AMAZING fresh scones with homemade jam out to the table. Seriously best scones I have ever had. Service was friendly and quick. We loved the Chorizo Scramble, the Eggs Benedict had a house made hollandaise (instead of a powder mix) and they serve real maple syrup. Note for anyone taking kids - there are twists on some of the traditional stuff. For example, the waffles have some corn meal or something in them and they are thin and crunchy, not tall like the Belgian waffles you get most places. They are delicious, but they were different and my son wasn't really happy about it. They serve roasted red potatoes and I could have eaten a whole plate of those. The hot chocolate is also delicious, so much better than the just ad water variety. To top it all off, you can get a really decent Bloody Mary. Well done, I wish there was something comparable to this place in Spokane (where I am from) we would eat there every week.

Plenty of chunks of salmon in the salmon scramble. Almost too much! The scones are delicious and the coffee is strong, but not overwhelming. My sister's bacon waffle was delicious as well. There can be a bit if a wait, but this place will not disappoint. Very friendly service, too.

This was a perfect spot to take my Mother and Aunt to Easter brunch. The omelets we got were delicious. The cilantro-lime sour cream was awesome and the tomatoes tasted so fresh it was a bit surprising. As this was the first time eating there, I don't have much experience with the entire menu, but I would be more than willing to try anything on the menu, and I would expect to enjoy it immensely.

I love Zell's! It's homestyle American with great service (despite how busy it gets!). We came on a Saturday at around 8:15 and got in, thank goodness, because we were early enough. I got their salmon scramble, which was divine: made with fresh, wild salmon, my partner got their greek omelette, (again, delicious, with fresh feta, olives, spinach, and red peppers). My father got their multigrain pancakes, which he said were some of the best he's had, (of any pancake), and my mom got their signature German pancake with fresh lemon wedges: it was all gone by the end! Some coffee at restaurants is just bearable. Some is okay. Some is great. Zell's coffee is AWESOME. I can't tell you what a difference it makes to have great food AND great coffee together!!! Zell's is awesome. Get there early, even on a weekday. They're packed. But, even if they are, they'll still be very friendly to you: a rare thing in this day and age!

I didn't come here for the first ten years that I lived in town. The place looked so established that I actually believed that you had to be a third generation Portlander to be allowed to sit down. State Reps eat here. So do famous musicians. Now I do too. And imagine how shocked I was to discover that the service was some of the best I've seen in the city. The rotating seasonal specials are always the thing to order but you'll be competing with me and dozens of other regulars who will gobble them up and cause them to run out before 9 AM! It can be loud. It can be crowded. But the staff is efficient and well-honed and does not disappoint. If something is the matter, they will fix it immediately!

I liked the scones, the jam and that coffee. The omlettes were horrible that we got. They put way to much cheese on them and they were greasy. I did not expect that from this place. I must have gotten the wrong thing on the menu? BEWARE OF CHEESE - if you do not like a ton of it on your eggs.

Great breakfast that feels like down home cookin! Yes, there will be a line, but- it's very worth the wait, the service and the food! So go, and wait, and drink a cup of joe while you wait. Zell's has been in my bookmarks as long as I can remember and I can finally say, I have had a great breakfast at this cute little cafe. Being Portland natives, we don't mind the wait for a great breakfast on the weekend, it's just a given! Lucky enough though, we arrived around 9 am and only had to wait about 20 minutes! Score! I had the smoked salmon scramble, and man that was delish! Lots of smoked salmon amongst my perfectly scrambled eggs! And I love how they give you fresh mini scones with jam right when you sit down! Our coffee cups were kept full and the service was super friendly and not "hipster like" at all. My kinda breakfast cafe! And I need to add- we were in and out in under 45 minutes! Extra points for that! Zell's makes my list for top breakfast spots in PDX!

Me and my boyfriend found this place through yelp while we were visiting Portland in preparation for our move in a couple of weeks. I already know that I am going to be a regular customer. First, they serve warm scones with jam as a breakfast appetizer. I didn't like scones...now I do. They were so delicious. I had a smoked salmon and gruyere scramble. It was perfect. 5 stars. My boyfriend had the eggs benedict and he loved his as well. The tables seemed a little cramped but they also had a bar area, which is where we sat. The servers were all very nice, and they shared duties. We loved the atmosphere and the food and we will definitely return.

We had a very delicious breakfast. Eggs Benedict and French toast. Coffee was good and the scones were amazing. Service was very friendly and prompt. We would certainly go back.

So many places to go to for breakfast, what to do? After doing some research we chose Zell's! And we were delighted by a number of things. It was close to us and we were starving! The service was fast and friendly, which was a plus when you are hungry and before even taking our drink orders we were served delicious, hot, homemade scones! That was a pleasant surprise to tide us over until our meal came not even 15 minutes later. I ordered one of their specials, which was a green chili quesadilla, served with eggs of your choice and black beans. It was delicious! I can remember the name of the cheese they used in it, but it was a white, creamy cheese that made the whole dish, well that and the green chilies! My boyfriend got pancakes, eggs, bacon, and toast. The pancakes were amazing! This place definitely knows great service and wonderful dishes! I will be back for sure!

The insta-scones are as delicious as the others have stated. If you order a cup of tea it arrives with a large French press capable of many, many refills. Excellent green tea and coffee. Fresh squeezed orange juice was on-point as well. I had the Mozzarella, proscuitto and tomato frittata with potatoes. The potatoes were excellently seasoned and the frittata was very well done. My husband had the Salmon benedict which had a delicious Hollandaise sauce. Our server was friendly and prompt. Overall a very pleasant experience.

Always a favorite of mine. They still recognize me even though I don't come in nearly as much as I used to. They do have some newer staff (I really loved some of their tenured staff that has seemed to disappear over the last year). Who can't love a place that gives you fresh scones and jam as you sit down. Food is always spot on and we love the loose tea in a French press. Eggs Benedict- avocado, bacon & tomato omelette - German pancakes with rhubarb - Asiago and asparagus scramble....whatever you have you can't go wrong. If there is a wait it is worth it!

Stopped by yesterday for breakfast with friends. Food is delicious, atmosphere is great all around. Most meals are around 10$ which isn't bad considering the quality of good. Everyone at my table was very pleased with their choices. I will definitely be back!!

First time coming to this restaurant. The corned beef hash was delicious and the cottage cheese blueberry pancakes were to die for. They also make a tasty Bloody Mary. The service was great too and we got seated right away. All around wonderful bfast experience.

We had a great experience at Zell's! Our waitress was simply amazing! She was witty, fun, and great at her job - we tipped 30% as a thank you for the quick and friendly service. I wish I could remember her name! The food was extra tasty, the wait wasn't too bad, and the free scones before the meal really hit the spot. We would definitely recommend Zell's to a friend.

Good place for breakfast! Service is quick and friendly--love the scones they give you with your water! We had the German pancake and the Eggs Florentine--both were flavorful and light! Will definitely be back!

We had a great breakfast at Zell's. Located right on a corner in East Portland with lots of windows, it's a perfect morning retreat. It's a popular place which usually has a fair share of breakfast-goers waiting in line, which is great if you're up for conversation with friendly stranger or two. It's has a very trendy appeal and nuance which had me immediately thinking "fresh" and "local." I was right. The food was very fresh and I believe the produce and protein are all acquired locally. Very good menu with options for those who enjoy meat, and those who dont. I believe the menu evolves with the seasons too, which keeps things new and constantly progressing. The service was friendly and upbeat as well. I wasn't particularly excited about the scones which most people enjoy here, only because they scones weren't warm and the butter came as an unspreadable ice cube. Overall I really enjoyed the service and food here. Go check it out!

One of the ore venerable of the Pdx breakfast spots, Zell's has been great for years. Free baby scones precede a slamming meal... the gorgonzola, mushroom and thyme omelette and the dutch babies are standby's.

Met a friend here for brunch who I hadn't seen in a long time. I hadn't been here for a long time and thought why not?! I do like the breakfast here, but the coffee wasn't so good. The scones seemed to have gotten smaller too. :( I wanted more than just the two mini ones, a big one even would have sufficed. I had to be happy with what I had. Saved on calories? The omelettes are always good and not too big of a portion...just right. There are so many great breakfast spots in PDX, so this is good..but still open to others. :)

Father's Day one of the best days of my life. The food at Zell's was a big part of it. My two daughters took me to breakfast and besides the overwhelming Love I received from them I got a awesome corned beef hash. My oldest daughter had the salmon and eggs and I could stop diving into plate. After all it was my day. My little one who doesn't even like breakfast ordered Ala carte great bacon a superb pancake and eggs. The service on a busy Sunday was great. Love this place.

  • Jacob M.

Service was amazing, loved the feeling of the place. Little scones were a great way to start. Sadly the salmon omelette was just...not very good. Cheese was just shredded and thrown on top, and I literally couldn't taste the salmon. If I hadn't seen little pink bits, I wouldn't have even known salmon was in it. Fruit side was inedible and unripe. Go for the ambiance and service and a long cup of coffee, but not for the food.

Great food, great service! Tasty coffee while you wait. My partner had the baked salmon benedict, which was perfectly cooked and full of flavor. The hollandaise sauce was delicious, the English muffins were super fresh, and the salmon tender and delicious. I ordered the Chorizo omelette, which featured Anaheim chilies and cheddar cheese. The flavor was superb, and the eggs fluffy and light. Of course, the complimentary mini scones with raspberry jam were light and perfect as an appetizer. Coffee and water were refilled several times, and all servers were friendly and prompt. Overall, an amazing breakfast, reasonably priced, and service to boot. We'll be back very soon!!

An old Portland holdover for those wishing to escape from the lines and hipster trends of today's food scene, Zell's doesn't really shine for outstanding food or presentation. I have a hard time writing a review on this establishment. It's the type of diner-style restaurant food that my midwest-born dad enjoys. Bacon and eggs, German pancakes, omelettes, you know the drill. There are a few selections thrown into the mix with Italian or Mexican flare, but the flavors and preparations come off as bland, Americanized versions of better dishes available at so many other restaurants. For all of the rave reviews and acclaim this restaurant garners from long time loyal customers and new ones alike, I guess I just don't understand the hype. It's just generally not something I get excited about. The two redeeming factors that Zell's Cafe has going for them is that their prices are reasonable, and their service is nothing short of outstanding. If there's one thing I need to bring up here, though, and this is a straight up complaint, it's the corned beef hash. This was perhaps the most disappointing meal I've eaten in a long time. The cook took some greasy limp hash browns and mixed in some stringy beef, and fried it into a flat oily pile of blaahhh. The "corned beef" was barely discernable in the mix of yellow oil, onions, and soggy potatoes. There wasn't a bit of spice or flavor here, just a gross heap of calories and starch. If you are a fan of corned beef hash, DO NOT ORDER this meal. Stick with the German pancake. With so many great breakfast options in Portland, Zell's is generally a cheap last resort for us, if we have kids or someone who wants the no-frills diner style meal. I've been to Zell's many, many times, and every time I go, it seems to be a little bit worse than the last visit. I hope these guys step up their game. Zell's Cafe is in need of a refresh, and they could take a lesson from myriad other restaurants about how to properly prepare an old favorite such as corned beef hash.

All the cool Wesen are going to Zell's. I hadn't eaten there in about 20 years, after having an unimpressive breakfast on my first visit. Not that I generally hold a food grudge for two decades--It wasn't terrible before--but Portland has so many good morning meal spots, I just never went back. A scene from "Grimm" was recently filmed there, reminding me to give them another try. Breakfast was great this time. So many of the menu items sounded tasty, it took a while for my guy and I choose. We settled on two of the specials, an Italian omelet and a Reuben scramble, promising to go halvsies. I was intrigued by the idea of a scrambled Reuben (imagine if you upended your sandwich into a pan of egg, cooked it up and put it back on the bread): pastrami, gruyere and egg on toasted rye with a side of sauerkraut and potatoes. It was pretty messy to eat, but flavorwise, it really worked. The sandwich was enough to feed three people. I almost refused to relinquish my half when I got to the midpoint. Fortunately, the other entrée was nearly as good, so neither of us suffered too much when we switched plates. Our server and the other staff who stopped by to check on us (and bring more napkins!) were down-to-earth, kind of chatty but not in an annoying way. The tiny, biscuitlike scones deserve a special mention; they are complimentary and brought out prior to your order, served with a side of excellent jam. Plus they are super cute. Zell's is once again in my realm of breakfast possibilities. And if I happen to run into Detective Nick Burkhardt dining with Monroe the Blutbad, I say, "All the better to eat with you, my dears."

Love Love Love this place! I honestly did not know what to expect from this place, I didn't really read the reviews just saw it had a whole bunch of stars and a lot of reviews so knew it would be a choice spot. After wandering the neighborhood to find this place (all sense of direction is lost when I'm on vacation) we stumbled across this cute neighborhood cafe which is absolutely adorable. Upon being seated we were immediately brought some delicious warm scones and jam. I'm not going to say who ate all of the jam (Anne Marie M.) but I hardly got a taste so promptly asked for seconds. The dishes - I ordered the breakfast sandwich and AM ordered the Baked Salmon Benedict and let me tell you mine was delicious but the Salmon Benedict was far superior. Local fresh Salmon melted like butter in my mouth. The Just Cant Get Enough song repeated over and over in my head. Absolutely divine. The staff were also very friendly and accommodating. I'm sure our requests and questions got annoying after a bit. Tons of food and took home yummy leftovers. I wish this place was closer to home.

Normally I hate to vote with the crowd, but I'm agreeing with the 4 star average. Zells is good, but not stellar. But when breakfast is concerned and you don't want to shell out $20 for pancakes, 4 stars is actually pretty high praise. Since I did actually have the pancakes (which were not $20), I will say that my review is based on that most pedestrian of breakfasts, what Zells calls the 2-2-2; 2 cakes o' the pan, 2 eggs, and 2 slices bacon. It's a good thing to fall back on when nothing else strikes you and, I might say, something like the elusive perfect pizza. It seems so easy to do, and yet so hard to achieve perfection. I really enjoyed the pancakes, which were somewhat crispy on the outside and tender within. The eggs were also nicely done, but the bacon was a little overdone for me and seemed like they had barely been reheated on the flat top. Other than that, the service was attentive and friendly, the coffee and water flowed, and although it was quite busy, we were served in fairly quick order. Marks of a place that has their system down to a T. The missing star is based mainly on Zells essentially being one big room with little style. It works in the sense that it's not loud, but neither does it have a particularly warm or inviting feel. Also, the tables are a little cramped, which meant that I either had to fight for position with another diner behind me or put up with the crowded waiting bench being right behind me. It's nice that they have a large-ish waiting area inside, but it can cramp the people who have already ordered.

Lucky for our party it was a week day so we barely had to wait. Our breakfast was good but nothing too memorable. Service was excellent. I think the warm scones will you wait for breakfast was a nice touch. I would certainly go back here again

We ordered the peach and blueberry german pancakes. They give complimentary scones with jam which was an excellent appetizer. The bacon was good quality and fresh. They were amazing!!! The most filling and tasty breakfast I've had in ages. Next time I come I will order the Reuben scramble.

It took about 25 minutes for my party of 5 to be seated on a Sunday morning, not too bad. The scones and jam were waiting for us at the table, ready for us to eat. The jam was amazing but the scones were okay. They were super crumbly and a little dry so I definitely needed the jam to even it out. I ordered the baked salmon Benedict while my friends ordered the German pancake and huevos rancheros. The salmon was a little on the dry side and my friends and I agreed that the hollandaise sauce was a little under-seasoned. The potatoes, however, were AMAZING. A little on the crunchy side and perfectly seasoned. The German pancake was pretty good, in my opinion. The huevos rancheros were pretty good but it did need the potatoes to offset the mushiness. Overall, the food was okay and I don't think I'll be back.

Came here for brunch with my daughter. We arrived a few minutes before noon, and we only had a twenty minute wait. The fresh coffee served outside during our wait was a nice touch. Once seated, our waiter took his time coming over to take our order, and that was the one and only time we saw him during our entire visit. We both had the French toast and a side of bacon. The French toast was good, but not great. Bacon was cold and hard. We did enjoy the atmosphere, and the service we received from everyone but our waiter was great. I'd be willing to give Zells another try based on other great reviews, but this vist was sort of a miss for us.

I've been here a dozen or so times over the years and always leave satisfied and with a box of leftovers. Simple, fresh, delicious = solid meals. Today I had the portobello scramble it was excellent. The fruit cup instead of potatoes or toast is well worth the up charge. Great coffee, yummy bloody Mary's. My husband always always orders the corned beef hash and eats the whole damn thing too. I don't wait more than 15 minutes though....just can't do it, so I don't go there with a large group and try to go on a weekday. Today we lucked out and walked right in and sat down. Beautiful! Oh, and the complimentary little fluffy scones with butter and jam upon seating is a treat to look forward to and smile about :)

Nothing really stood out about this place. Cute interior though. Eggs, pancakes, all pretty standard stuff. Nothing innovative. Expect about a 25-minute Saturday morning wait average.

I ate here after running a half marathon, so I was obviously a BIG fan! But regardless of how hungry I was going into Zell's, this was a pretty legit spot. There wasn't a wait, unlike most PDX brunch spots on the weekend - and on a nice day they have great outdoor seating options. The staff is friendly and they bring out butter scones for the table to enjoy, which are delicious - I tried requesting a second round of scones, but the waiter said it would be extra :-( I ordered the salmon scramble and it was a solid order with the perfect amount of cheese/salmon ratio. They also have great iced coffee, served with frozen coffee cubes. Overall, I have been to more mind blowingly good brunch spots in Portland, but Zell's is a solid neighborhood joint on a weekend!

We came here last Sunday morning at 9:30am and it was packed. We waited for about 20 minutes and then gave up and went to our favorite Breakfast place in Portland, the Utopia Cafe. But since Zells was so crowded and had a Yelp 4 star rating.... We decided to try again this Sunday and arrived at 9:00 am. All the tables were occupied but there were 3 seats at the bar. We went for that. By the time we left there were about 10 people waiting for seats. Ok.... For the good. Service was some of the best in Portland. They were very pleasant and quick to get water on table and then coffee after that. Orders were taken quickly. Food came fast. To go box and bill came as soon as we were done. The place has a nice look to it as well. Now for the not so good. Its really noisy. I think a lot of Portlanders seek out environments like this.... But I like to hear what my wife or friends are saying to me. They do deliver free "mini scones" with butter and jelly very soon after being seated. The scone was more like a biscuit and was just ok. They were not worth the calories for us to finish them... Even though I always feel compelled to eat anything that is free... I got my standard eggs over, potatoes, and bacon. My wife got the chorizo omlet. The omelet was just ok. The potatoes were just ok. The eggs were just a bit warmer than luke warm. And the worst sin of all....... The bacon looked and tasted like it had been cooked earlier and then rewarmed. Hey... Come on guys.... Bacon deserves more respect than that! So all in all it was just an ok breakfast. I not sure why it was so crowded. Perhaps this area of town is devoid of good breakfast places? We also saw a lot of people eating pancakes and German or Dutch baby pancakes.. Maybe they might be worth trying. But since we are not fans of noisy places we probably will not come back.

Small place with great food. The tables turn quickly, so we waited just a few mins. Coffee refilled promptly, free scones, and a fresh menu. But the German pancake! With fresh blueberries! Light, crispy, and exactly what I was craving. Responsive staff ( they brought me rhubarb topped @1st)--fresh pancake in 3 min, not just with the topping scraped off. Locals and visitors there, so it must be good

A cozy neighborhood breakfast joint, worth checking out. I've had Zell's on my bookmarks for awhile. I live within walking distance to Broder, but there were 6 parties already listed. Thanks to Yelp, I had a list of breakfast joints on my phone. We drove to Zell's, around 10am on a weekday. We were greeted within a mere second of walking in. Given complimentary scones, as soon as we were seated. There were probably only 3 other tables when we walked in. My mother ordered the regular eggs benedict and I ordered the salmon benedict. It's not as great as made from scratch hollandaise, but was pretty tasty nonetheless. Might be busier during the weekend, as by the time we left, mostly all the tables were taken!

One of my favorite breakfast joints in town. The food is what you'd expect at a good breakfast place, and there isn't any one item that is just spectacular. The coffee is also OK, and if you're a coffee connoisseur, then choices abound in Portland. What I like about the place is the friendly and energetic staff, the crowd (mostly middle age), the atmosphere that is cozy and welcoming, and menu consistency. I come here with my dad every now and then, and this is just the kind of place where weekend breakfast with family is rather comforting.

One of the best Eggs Benedict's we've ever eaten. My husband had the traditional Benedict and I had the Salmon. The eggs where poached to perfection and the sauce was just perfect. They also serve little drop biscuits and jam at each table. This is a small diner with closely set tables. We waited about 15 minutes to be seated on a Sunday at 11am, which was great.

Zells is one of my favorite breakfast spots. The line gets a bit long on the weekends but it seems to move pretty quickly. They also have self serve coffee outside while you wait. Their seasonal pumpkin pancakes are delicious. I recommend getting the 2+2+2 with the pumpkin pancakes. Yum!

This brunch place rocks! Chorizo omelette and mimosa - was one of the best omelettes I"ve had so far. Service was quick. Friendly waiters. They served fresh scones while we were waiting for our food to arrive and the scones were delicious as well. Definitely going back again.

So I just got done reaching unprecedented levels of "going in," on the standard eggs Benny here at Zell's cafe. The dish was second to only the eggs Benedict I had in Paris (yeah I've only had the dish like three times but whatevs, who's counting amirite?(No, I didn't take a picture in Paris because by virtue of being American I was already "that guy.")) ANYWAY. FIRST THEY (whoa, caps) brought out these delightful, crumbly lil triangles of amazing bread with what I presumed to magic sugar dust, and jam. So my unrefined ass tried to dip 'em in the jam. Nah, not that kind of party because the jam is far too thick and real to simply be used as a dip. Next I threw back like three cups of black coffee like a bro taking jäger bombs (or whatever gross analogy you prefer) while awaiting my eggs Benny. Idk coffee is coffee can't really rate it if your eyes aren't open because you haven't had coffee yet, so yeah. Then they brought out my eggs Benedict and I proceeded to ferociously devour it in a way that had myself-- and I would imagine everyone around me -- wondering the last time I ate. Potatoes on the side were on point, I give em a B cuz...cuz. They were good tho. Fast forward to 7 minutes later and somewhere my father is pleased because he inducted me into the clean plate club when I was like 5 years old, and I'm no slouch to this day. So that concludes my review Zell's. If you made it this far, I am: 1. Really surprised, and 2. Hoping you're gonna go do what I did and leave a good tip for the nice staff when you're done enjoying Zell's.

Came to Zell's for breakfast recently, after reading some great Yelp reviews! All in all, very satisfied! The food? Delicious! I had Juevos Rancheros with Avocado and Chorizo. Delicious with a little bit of spice. Also, they serve complimentary scones with jam before the meal which came out warm (possibly fresh from the oven) and were savory and wonderful. The service? Pretty good! Nothing spectacular, but our coffee was constantly filled as was our water. And they even gave us "to-go" cups for our coffee when we left. The atmosphere? Pretty small restaurant, which makes for a tight squeeze at the tables. My table had an exposed screw underneath, which tore a small hole in my jeans (bummer!), but all in all it's okay. I wouldn't recommend dressing up for this place, just in case that happens to you.

In my opinion, the absolute perfect brunch spot. The wait might be long at times but they serve coffee outside to drink while you wait. The interior is cozy, service absolutely top notch. After you order your drink they bring out delicious mini scones to munch on. Most of the time I order the bacon, avocado, tomato omelette. It practically overflows with delicious ingredients. Portion sizes are perfect. I always leave happy.

The salmon benedict comes with - OMG - so much salmon. This puts so many other salmon benedicts around town to shame (though, some have other compensatory features). I'm glad that I managed to get it finally, as I've generally considered it but tended to opt instead for specials, which have always been great. The german pancake is amazing, and hard to resist on occasions when I need a bit more morning nutrition. Bonus points for the scones and fabulous jam that greets you at your table when you sit down.

A small neighborhood joint serving up free scone and jelly starters that were devoured instantly. I had the classic eggs benedict. Each layer, egg, ham, and enish muffin, was amazing on its own. I could have dipped anything in the hollandaise sauce. My boss lady had 2/2/2 eggs, bacon, pancakes. She chose peanut butter over syrup. We didn't speak much during our meal, it was that good.

    (4)
  • Zoe L.

The food was no nonsense and well made and though I could tell that we had arrived just after the busiest time of day on a Saturday and we didn't have to wait long, they conveniently had coffee available outside and seats for anyone who did have to wait. My corned beef hash was good, though not overwhelmingly great (I would say it is rare to mess up a hash). I was happy with its simplicity. The closest it got to fancy was a sprig of parsley to finish to plate. My partner got the huevos rancheros with chorizo - definitely a bit more flavorful but one would expect it to be. All in all, it was good solidly cooked food, simple atmosphere (loved the *please no cell phones* note on the menu) and not too expensive! The only thing that was difficult was navigating the tables - things are fairly packed in so it was hard to find a good path to our table. If the worst thing I can say is that they are busy and try to fit in as many people as they can, I think that is a-ok.

Worth every star - don't leave Portland without a brunch here. There's often a line but it moves quickly, especially if you sit at the bar. You may need to put your name on the list outside, but they have coffee while you wait and heaters by the door. The bacon waffle is a must!

Zell's is one of my favorite places. The service is fast and friendly, the food is superb, and you can get a table quickly even at peak brunch hours on a Sunday. The scones that come out first during brunch are the best scones I've ever had, and I come back again and again for the salmon Benedict. The prices are pretty great too. Best restaurant in the neighborhood!

Super quick, polite, & friendly service. Happy we got seats at the bar b/c it seems a lil tight on the tables, but a neighborly place where a lot of people seem to know each other. Food was good, German pancake was great and crispy, potatoes were delicious and Bloody Mary had the perfect spicy bite!

Wow this was absolutely amazing service. It was full when we arrived and we had to wait a few minutes to be seated. SO I didn't expect such attentive service. Our food arrived very quickly, our waters were kept filled, coffee kept topped off, and our waiter was great about asking how things were or if we needed anything throughout the meal. The scones with jelly were great and our food was very good. Highly recommend!

Portland loves its brunch even more than Seattle, and there's a lot to be said for any place that can seat you in under an hour on a weekend morning (especially when it's raining). Zell's is a solid breakfast/lunch place, but never seems to be as crazy overcrowded as other brunch spots -- a bonus! They have indoor and outdoor seating, but there isn't really anywhere to sit while you're waiting, so just put your name in and stake out a spot on the sidewalk. Fortunately they do have self-serve coffee right outside the door, so you can get a head start on caffeinating while you wait. On a busy Sunday, we waited about 30 minutes for a table for two, which wasn't too bad. You can get seated quicker if you're willing to sit at the bar, too. Once you do get a table, they'll come by with a little plate of scones and jam, so you're pretty well taken care of before you even place an order. The menu is fairly standard diner stuff; the last time I was there, I had an asparagus/prosciutto/asiago scramble ($10) that was good. Service is friendly and the food comes out in a reasonable amount of time. All in all, not a mind-blowing breakfast experience, just good-quality and fairly priced comfort food and a busy, cheerful atmosphere.

The place is very cute and the interior decor was subdued and relaxing. Service was very prompt and attentive while not being overly so. Upon arrival, we got delightful scones with delicious home made jam which was a yummy way to get our appetite going. The menu is a nice mix of breads and egg dishes. We enjoyed the salmon Benedict which was delicious and a chalkboard special called the Farmer Frittata which was equally as delicious. While the coffee was just ok, the overall experience was excellent enough to merit a 5. The tea was wonderful and served in a tea press.

The scones with butter and jam that are served while you wait for your food are great. They're small, but delicious and help satisfy your hungry belly when waiting for brunch. The gorgonzola, mushroom, thyme omelette had great flavor. The salmon benedict has so much salmon on it. It was so much that I ended up having leftovers to mix with my potatoes (no complaints). Great menu options, breakfast served until closing, and decent prices as well.

The group I was with had a really good brunch here. I've heard it's a popular place and can get crowded but we caught it at a good time.

Every weekend. Every weekend for nearly two years. Zell's has become such a routine that I open the menu more out of reflex than need. I already know what I'm there for. * The German pancakes. * The brunch omelet. * The bacon avocado omelet. * THE SCONES. My partner-in-crime doesn't open the menu at all. He orders the Reuben Scramble. In the off-season? "Huevos rancheros, please." Everything is good. Everything is fresh. Everything makes me happy. I'll be back next weekend.

I was disappointed by my dish here. I ordered the corn beef hash and it wasn't what I was expecting. My friends suspected that it might have been different because it was nitrate-free. I didn't realize what that meant so in the future, I'll be sure not to order anything nitrate-free. On the other hand, my friends LOVED the eggs Benedict

Never ever had a bad breakfast here. Sometimes a wait but never long. I can never figure out why folks wait so long at Jam on Hawthorne when this is a short distance away. Try something new every time I can but love the warm scones, tea press is strong and a bargain, and probably my favorites are the german pancake with rhubarb or cousin Maurice's eggs. Good people and I love that everyone chips in. You dont have to wait for 'your' server. As much as I try and spread my dollars around Portland's food scene, Zells keeps getting my breakfast dollars.

Baked Salmon Benedict equals Yummy! Between the complimentary scones and the great jam with them and the Salmon Benedict it is a match made in heaven. It is one of the better Benedict's in town and I have have tried quite a few. No wait , quick service, what other reason do you for a breakfast option. A must try for those you haven't.

Very, very good! Super cute, and surprisingly not Portland crowded at 8 on a weekend (although full and bustling). They bring you little scones. Had the huevos and it was really good. Apparently it's been here a long time.

My daughter and I had breakfast at Zell's this morning. They really remain high on our list for breakfast. Being Monday, we had no wait. The service was prompt and our waitress checked back often. My daughter's hot chocolate was oozing with chocolate and whipped cream! Her veggie scramble was just as she asked with potatoes subbing for the eggs. I make a great apple pancake! Theirs was better! The perfect amount of apples and pancake. Fabulous! And of course, the scones! What can I say. They arrive hot from the oven when you sit down and my daughter patiently waited for a side of more scones, while they were still cooking! They melt in your mouth! Bravo!

Monday morning in SE Portland - picked Zell's Cafe at random. The food and service are marvelous. Had lemon yogurt pancakes, partner had the corn beef hash. we both agreed that out respective dishes were the best ever. would highly recommend.

Incredibly great breakfast spot. Tiny scones with accompanying jam kick off your meal and it's a taste riot from there on out. What I love about Portland, and Zell's exemplifies, is the local cuisine's ability to take relatively simple dishes and open them up with wonderful complexity. Our server, Violet, was a charismatic bundle of joy.

I've been to Zell's Cafe a couple of times and have previously loved it! The service has always been so pleasant and I've had good memories there. This morning, however, was a different story. My family was in from Ohio and wanted to get brunch before heading back home. I recommended we go to Zell's because I've always enjoyed the food and the people. Yes, there were 6 of us total and yes, I understand that when a restaurant sees a table of 6 walk in they're not very excited...but the way a particular man behaved was just rude. We walked in and asked if we should write our name down or just seat ourselves. A man turned over the sign in sheet and we proceeded to write our name down and then sit by the window to wait. We noticed two 4-top tables were open and right next to each other (it would have taken a second to put them together and seat us). Instead, another woman walked in and wrote down "party of 4" and was seated immediately at one of the 4-tops (even when no other members of her party were present). Another man walked in behind this woman and was immediately sat at the remaining empty 4-top. This customer even looked back at us waiting and said "Shouldn't they be seated first?" The waiter/host didn't seem too concerned and didnt respond. The waiter/host then avoided eye contact with us until we felt we should just leave. It would have been better if he could have at least communicated what was going on. Maybe they did have a special spot for us in the back to fit all 6 of us and he was waiting for those customers to leave, but I doubt it. He just continued to seat customers walking in after us until we were completely turned off. If I were the manager or owner, I would have been pretty disappointed by the way this man represented the establishment. Mainly because I have had so many great times, but after this I will not be returning. The other staff seemed nice but this man/host/waiter in an orange shirt today was not cool. Maybe he was just having a bad day, but I thought everything about the experience was just so rude. :(

There's always ALWAYS something welcoming when you take a seat at the counter...and what's shoved in your face right when your ass hits the seats? Itsy bitsy scones that packs a powerful punch!!!! Seriously, I can just come here just for the cutesy tasty scones! Anywho, avoid the wait and take a counter space if you can. You'll get random conversations with locals...and no, the topic of discussion will not be, "ugh, you're from CA?!!" Very small comfy feeling type of place where you feel welcomed. Menu covers the breakfast spread and of course, including gluten free items. What to get here: *German Pancakes: one of the BEST i've ever hand, hands down. *Apple German Pancake: OMG, even better than a regular!!!!! * Eggs Benedict: yummers! definite grab and the portion's more than enough! the english muffin could be a tad more fluffier for my taste * Huevos Rancheros: not bad! add some hot sauce on top of the salsa and you'll thank me!

Last December I was visiting a friend in Portland, and since she lived a block from Zell's, we came here for breakfast. I was also told that the restaurant has been featured on the show Grimm. I love that show. Because it's been so long and since I've had many breakfasts elsewhere, I don't remember what I had here. But I know I enjoyed it and enjoyed the hustle and bustle of the place. What I do remember clearly, however, were those mini scones and raspberry jam that they served before meal. They were sooooo goood!!!! That rasberry jam was delicious. Honestly, i'd go back just to have the scones and jam. Really. Does get busy and you might have to wait, but that's a good sign for a restaurant. Definitely a place to check out when you are in Portland.

Dad is in town so it must be time for the foodening. I know foodening isn't a real word and not only because it has a red line under it. I'm making up my own language. You can join me if you'd like. I live so close to Zell's that the following statement is embarrassing for me to say. Previous to this visit, I had only been to Zell's one other time. I've lived in this neighborhood for close to 5 years now. What is wrong with me. I love this cafe and yet don't patronize it as much as I should. My eating dime is torn between so many good food options in this town that it is difficult to revisit the old standby's. I need to make a better effort though and I swear that I will. Anyway, lunch was in order so dad and I walked over here as it is close to my apartment and he mentioned he was interested in a salad. Easy enough. Pretty well busy for lunch here on a Wednesday afternoon. I'm not sure where these people come from, but they were here and the cafe was almost at full capacity. We got a table right away so no fuss no muss. Whatever that means. I believe they serve breakfast all day and the other time I was here was for breakfast. I remember really enjoying it, but I wanted to get some lunch this time. Meatloaf was calling me from the menu so I ordered the meatloaf sandwich. Beef and pork, seasoned with Italian spices. Served on a toasted bun with lettuce, tomato, red onion and dijon-mayo. Pretty simple stuff, but Zell's seemed like the place that would make a mean loaf of meat. I was not disappointed at all. With a side of potatoes and tortilla soup, it was the perfect amount of food and not a ton of money. The prices here are pretty great. Only $7.25 for this part of the meal. This is my local cafe and I need to show them so more love. I will. If you haven't been here you should show them some love too. I'm sure they'll love you back.

Got right in at 9am on Saturday! The staff was really nice. We ordered the bacon waffle and the German pancake with pears and pear sauce. It was supposed to be ginger sauce as well which I didn't pick up on, but it was really good nonetheless! I would definitely go back for brunch! The line picked up shortly after 9:30.

Tried this place for the first time with my husband today. We arrived around noon, and there was a short wait. I liked the idea of the chalk outside while you wait, nice for both kids and adults. If someone wanted to order a drink while they waited, a server would bring it outside for them. That was also a nice touch. We we seated pretty quickly with water at the table already. Shortly after, we received our complimentary scones with raspberry (I believe) jam. Very delicious! I ordered the traditional eggs Benedict & my husband ordered the Greek omelette, with a side of potatoes. The potatoes were AMAZING. Both dishes were perfectly proportioned and seasoned. No leftovers on either plate, and we left with full bellies. What I especially liked about Zell's was the service. The attention to detail, making sure our cups were full and checking to see if we needed anything and how things were. I also noticed neighboring tables receiving similar service. I intend on going again soon, maybe try one of the scrambles.

Went today. Heard good things for years, and finally ate at Zell's Cafe for the first time. Lemon yogurt pancake with blueberries -- amazing! Corn beef hash was delicious. Service was excellent. Wow! I live in SW 'burbs, but I'll be back.

So far I've had the baked salmon with pecan crust (the best salmon I've had in a restaurant in years; nearly cried, it was so damn good), the corned beef hash (flavor level is over 9000!), and the weekly pancake special in a couple of forms, each time unusual and each time incredible. The complimentary scones are obviously a cheeky way to win hearts and THEY DID. It can be a long wait, especially on the weekends, so be prepared. It's worth it.

Went here with a friend, so glad that I did! It was a Saturday morning, prime breakfast hours and the wait was less than I anticipated. The service was excellent and they have super tasty food! They have gluten free options which are spot on for taste. Totally plan on going back again and again.

I have been here for breakfast and brunch a number of times. I am not excited about waiting, either, although good coffee to wait with and keep my hands warm, that helps. I like the little scones too, is there anyone who doesn't? The jam is delish. I like the scrambles and the fruit waffles. The coffee keeps coming. That's cool. The service? well, I wouldn't call it warm, but it's efficient, which it has to be to manage all those people moving in and out. Go on a weekday, and go early, that's my advice. I wish people would stop telling other people about it. Enough already. This isn't my daughter's favorite breakfast place, she thinks it's a little loud. I would have to agree.

The stars must have been perfectly aligned this past week when we came to Zell's at high noon for lunch. Amazingly, we didn't have to wait for a table in this uber-popular eatery and we enjoyed some great food. And looky! They've got chain lights, which are apparently de rigueur for Inner Southeast neighborhood restaurants. Service was very warm and accommodating. We ordered the vegetarian chili and a Cobb salad. But first, we were served with some tasty complimentary scones. The vegeterian chili was outstanding. A perfect balance of cumin and chili heat. Yes, I can say it was the best chili we have ever eaten. Too bad it is only a winter seasonal dish. So get it while you can! The Cobb salad was nothing fancy, but the ingredients were fresh and the portion size perfect. The French roast coffee was delicious. Bonus points for the curtain draped across the front door, blocking chill breezes.

Maybe I'm boring...but I just keep coming back to the Portland Potatoes. You can fry 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew...but here they choose to smother them with veggies and cheese...they are heavenly...and freakin' cheap (less than $7). They always treat me right here, they know my hot sauce/coffee peculiarities without my even having to say anything. Like most Portland breakfast places it can be packed out on the weekends. And, like most breakfast places, I only go here on the weekdays (Screen Door excluded since it's impossible). My only real problem with Zell's has been remedied by a friendly message from a stranger on Yelp. (what is it...um, it's a "secret" but it'd be pretty easy to figure out by reading my previous review) Only sad thing about Zell's is that the lovely jam and spoon containing setups are GONE. But this seems to be happening to all Portland breakfast places one-by-one (even "Jam" doesn't have them anymore, what the crap). Bummer, I freakin' love those things. (this is some government health code revision/issue, not Zell's fault)

It's always a treat to grab brunch at Zell's. Their food (upscale diner) is always delicious and affordable, and the service is consistently attentive, friendly and efficient. The beautiful wood bar and high ceilings with big windows make the atmosphere delightful. I don't know what magic they put into their hollandaise sauce, but for a sauce made of butter and egg yolks theirs is surprisingly light and zippy.

I live across the street from Zell's but have only been here a handful of times. It's always busy there and I feel awkward eating alone. That said, when I can wrangle friends up we brave the lines. I almost always order the baked salmon bennie because it is lemony and delicious. Rich and healthy at the same time. Today I opted for the club sandwich because I have been craving one for years but only if it had actual chicken breast on it. Zell's version is sheer perfection and enough food to take half home for later. Juicy chicken, crisp bacon, lettuce, tomato and gobs of dijon mayo on sourdough. Yum! Our server kept my iced tea filled and service was fast and efficient. They close at 2 pm so go early and often!

What can I say? Probably the best breakfast/brunch in Portland. Homemade scones while you wait? Awesome. Coffee? Fantastic. Simple & tasty selection. Friendly waitstaff. Sometimes there's a line out front, but believe me, it's worth it! :)

I was underwhelmed. I think the best part of the experience was the warm scones they give to you as soon as we sat down. They even saved mine to ensure it was warm when I came in a few minutes later than the rest of the party. And the berry jam is awesome!! The "black board specials" are on the menu, so it's not that special after all, is it? With any new brunch place, I usually order my default - benedict. I decided on the baked salmon benedict, while my friends ordered the German pancake & omelet. The salmon portion was huge -- I was expecting a small piece on top of each muffin, but what I got is almost a full filet of salmon laid on top of both muffins. The hollandaise sauce was not so flavorful, unmemorable. I tried some of the German pancake and it's not as fluffy as I think it should be, but taste alright. Service was good, constant refill of coffee and water. I also like the space, even though it's small-ish, the big windows let lots of light in. In the end, it was an average meal. Not bad, but not good either. Unfortunately for them, there are so many other places in Portland that I probably wouldn't visit again.

Following my brother's recommendation. Looks great, little tiny scones greeted us at the table! Great little place with loads of character(s). The instant we sat down the tiny scones appeared at our table. I mentioned to the waitress that my brother recommended the place and that we came all the way from Gresham (gasp) to check it out. She asked if he told me that the "waitresses are surly"? He did not. Upon returning, she corrected herself and said that actually the waitresses are "hot". "Haute?" I asked. That too, she acknowledged. So much good stuff on the menu, I wish I was in town longer. Lori had the rhubarb German pancake. A bit of extra liquid from the rhubarb, but that's expected. The flavor was tart+sweet, fresh and awesome, the cake delicious! I can't resist scratch made corned beef hash, so I ordered that with eggs over-easy and a apple-pork sausage on the side. The corned beef was very good, shredded if I recall and mixed in with the potatoes. I should have asked for it a little crispier, but regardless it's right up there with the best hash I've had. Wish I lived in Portland still, I'd go here at LEAST once a week.

I met an old friend for breakfast today. It's been a while since we've seen each other. Life is sometimes like that, you know. This old friend is the best kind of old friend. The kind that welcomes you and makes you feel as if no time at all has passed since the last time you were together, but at the same time remains fresh and vital and interesting. Never old, never stale. It was good to see my friend again. Very good, indeed.

Finishing the reviews for our recent food adventure to Portland, Oregon, I can't leave Zell's Cafe off the list of great places we visited during our quest..... Everything about Zell's is soooooo....incredibly....Portland....great neighborhood location, welcoming open dining area, eclectic and friendly wait staff....and absolutely phenomenal food! From the complimentary scones and jam, great French press coffee....salmon Benedict...wait, did I say SALMON BENEDICT!!!! Fresh, fresh, fresh. What else can be said??? The vibe is cool, and the food is worth any wait. Places like Zells, Mothers, and other great Portland institutions are, in part, what make Portland such a wonderful place to visit. I do look forward to going back soon, and visiting a few (now) old favorites, and finding a few new gems.....

This place is so good! I just want to say that I love it here, just ate here for the first time today and it was so great! FREE SCONES. FREE COFFEE REFILLS. I had the German pancakes with pear and pear ginger sauce and my partner had the Traditional Eggs Benedict. We swapped halfways through our meals (sharing is caring) and we were both super amazed by the continued awesomeness flowing into our mouths and on our tastes buds. Just go here already, stop looking at yelp and hop on your bike or car or walk or bus it there, just get there. Zell's Cafe definitely has something tasty for your tummy.

This place is good. I love their special German pancake. Yum! I had the rhubarb pear German pancake. My husband had the corned beef hash, which was tasty as well. The service is great. Happiness, and hollandaise. Zell's provides me with both, along with delicious fresh baked scones & jam, good coffee, tender well prepared salmon, and good service. That's a tall order. I really would like to give them 4.5 stars, because this is one of my favorite breakfast/lunch spots. It's a cozy, sunny restaurant close in SE. I prefer going to places in my neighborhood, but gladly drive to Zell's when I can't resist my salmon craving anymore. If I go by myself, I usually take a spot at the bar, but they have probably 15 tables or so. There is usually a wait, but they're efficient at turning the tables. They don't seem to have a turnover in servers, which I usually see as a good sign. This is a casual place, but the servers are friendly and attentive. The Benedict's look good, and I can vouch for the tastiness of the hollandaise. The German pancakes are enormous! Two people could easily share one. They have various specials on the chalk board that vary with what's in season. The prices are surprisingly good. Most items are around $8, with my salmon with rice and veggies priced at $9.75. It's worth every penny!

We tried after being referred by a friend. My husbands omelet was delicious, mine was just OK. Of course there was a wait, about 30 minutes which wasn't so bad for a Sunday around 10:30. Great neighborhood, great service, just OK food.

This is my very favorite breakfast spot in Portland, though I hesitate to tell you that. For some reason, the waits are never long--even on the weekends. But they've given me so much* that I had to give back. We moved from SE to NoPo, but we still make it out to Zell's nearly every time we go out for bestmeal. *like coffee while you wait and little scones with delicious jam as soon as you're seated and Eggs Benedict (with veggie sausage and amazing hollandaise that tastes amazing on the yummy potatoes served on the side) and the best pancakes in Portland (with a little cornmeal for magical texture) and Cousin Maurice's Eggs, which really rule. Really.

Went this morning to try Zell's for mothers day after hearing good things. We had a short 15 minute wait and were seated. It was great to have coffee available while we waited and we started off on a great note. After being sat a waitress came by within 3 or 4 minutes and didn't say hi or welcome us, instead she just mumbled "what do you want?" We asked for a few more minutes. 5 minutes later a different waitress came by and took our order. We then sat for an hour without a single visit from our waitress. We waited and watched multiple parties sat and fed and exited while we waited. Finally we saw the waitress and had to call her over. We asked if she put in our order which she never did. We arrived at 9:30 and left at 10:50 with no food. She did tell us we wouldn't have to pay for the 2 gallons of coffee we drank... That was neat :/ Accidents happen and I understand an order slipping through the cracks but we didn't see our waitress for an hour which gave her no chance of fixing the problem for us. We will not return to Zell's and I wouldn't suggest it to any friends.

Pretty good. Not the absolute best, but not just good. If I could give 3.5 stars I would. Food: Very good - but nothing spectacular out of the ordinary. Maybe I didn't order something crazy... just got the French Toast, eggs, and bacon, but it was good. Free coffee refills... but I don't drink coffee. Note ** The jam they give you for the free scone (pre-meal) is fresh and amazing. Service: The guy who originally seated us was kinda... not mean; just not friendly. We originally wanted a table and he said the counter was available - but we said we'd wait. A counter seat (with no one around it) opened up - so we decided to take it. When he came by his tone of us sitting there was sarcastic even though I tried to be upbeat with him. Definitely turned me off to him. Luckily - our lady server was really great. She was also from Los Angeles and real friendly and attentive. Still put off by the first guy though. Next time I'll try another place and probably not visit again.

This review is a tribute. It is a tribute to the potential Pulitzer-winning review that Yelp swallowed after I gave it the craftsmanship and laser focus of a tenured diamond cutter. Now, if I sound slightly bitter, it is purely ephemeral as you know I love Yelp. I know I love Yelp. DOGS know I love Yelp. It just stings a little, you know? I guess it's time for me to put on my big boy panties. I mean, PANTS. See, I'm all flustered now, to the point I couldn't just backspace over that Freudian slip. You spin me right round, Yelp. Right round. On with the story... Zell's is a place I've been wanting to try for years but have always been put off by the wait. I have a pathological aversion to waiting for breakfast. This usually manifests itself in one of two ways. One, I settle for a breafburr at a Don Pedro's or a Gorditos. TWO, I go without. I bear the lion's (tiger's too, oh my!) share of the blame for this predicament but I just have no patience for queueing (five vowels in a row...hey, I like words). This day, however, was different in that I was up early AND going without was not an option. For, you see, an epic hike was planned for this day, which was to be the very finest of the young year. Belly timber was required to sustain this endeavor. Having cruised the menu the day prior, many meatless options were available for me and my vegetarian cohort from which to choose. Our prompt 8:22am arrival meant NO WAIT. Bless the Jesus. I don't believe there were any vacant tables left within 20 minutes of being seated so take that as fair notice. Scones + jam appeared promptly. Totes delizh. I was very intrigued by the German pancake with rhubarb so that's what I requested. My company decided on the portabella (sic) scramble. Various mimosas were also present. I will go on record here and now to say that I've not had a Teutonic flapjack prior so I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. Turns out, it's very eggy. I respect this but it's not really in my wheelhouse, if you follow. I'm better off sticking with the domestic variety pancake. Don't get me wrong...it was a gourmet item, just not my style. The rhubarb topping, however, was inspired and amazing...tart, sweet and juicy. It made it all better. My friend described the scramble as very good and flavorful. I even had some of it and, get this, I do not like mushrooms. I'm a fungist, I know. This scramble shook the foundations of this position. It was delicious and perhaps the best omelette/scramble I've sampled in a long time. Everything we had here was of very high quality and was well-prepared. The ambience is like a nice, country kitchen and that feels super homey to me. I will sample another breakfast offering the next time I'm up early on a weekend morning and find myself crossing Zell's threshold. I'm pretty certain I'm going to love my next selection. Huevos Rancheros, I'm looking right at you, providing you have become sentient and literate since I saw you last. Don't lose this one, Yelps!

My first time in Portland and I looked up breakfast places nearby. This place seemed to have good reviews and boy was I glad I listened. It was pretty busy with people sitting outside and other people waiting around to be seated. But the hostess took my name down and the people before me just happened to leave so we got seated in less than 10 mins. Which is a record for any busy restaurant. I got the eggs Benedict and not only was the hollandaise rich and creamy the egg was still runny just the way I like it. The scone with butter and jam while you wait was a great plus as well! I'd recommend this place to anyone!

This was the first place we had breakfast here in Portland...a city we had read was known for doing breakfast (a meal my husband and I hold in the highest esteem). I feel bad for saying this, but I didn't like anything about our meal. The ups: -Generous Portion Sizes -Fast, and I mean fast service. Not necessarily nice, just fast. The downs: -The fast service means they don't take time to cook your meal properly. In an effort to get more people served quickly, they didn't even cook mine or my husband's eggs fully. They were just really wet and runny. In fact, even after arriving with growling stomachs and feeling really famished, we couldn't even bring ourselves to finish our meals. -The coffee was burnt. How does that happen in Portland? -The scones were nothing special, no real flavor to them at all. I don't know if they just didn't have their A-game on or what, but I am certainly not planning on a return visit. There are plenty of other Portland places who seem to put more of an effort into their food.

Cute neighborhood location, but overly crowded with too many tables. Long story short, I could have made all this food better at home. Not impressed at all. First off - I'm all about Benedict. I ordered the Classic Benedict and it was below average. The hollandaise tasted the same as that crappy powdered mix from the store you just add butter to. Such a let down! If I' willing to clog my arteries with crap, then let it be fabulous tasting! The fried potatoes on the side were also mushy, not crispy. My man had huevos racheros. They were a small plate of slop, with three soft tortillas. It was just black beans, cheese and salsa with two eggs. Nothing on the side. I could have dumped this same slop out of cans, threw it on a plate and called it crap. But I paid for this crap. Boo.

so off the bat.. the scones came first. They where fresh and still steaming when you ripped them in half. Each person gets their own plate of two.. they were so good, and though i didn't want to fill up on them.. i did manage to steal the third one from my g/f. The place it self is a cute little/not so little on a corner cafe with a bit of old vintage inner. the breakfast was great, Portobello scramble, with a glass of orange juice, and to finish it off an apple German pancake.. great and friendly service and outstanding food. glad we found it.

Had a wonderful breakfast at Zell's! The waitstaff were all very nice, our waitress checked in on us several times. Even though the place was packed, we weren't rushed in any way. Loved the scones and jam! My french toast was yummy and the rest of the group raved about the different scrambles they ordered. Price was reasonable and I'm looking forward to eating here more.

Tasty food, friendly, competent service. Notable that when they bring out dolls/action figures and books for the kids, there's a fair number of dolls of color and kids of color in the books. Really appreciate that!

small portions hungover groggy staff.. service was so poor that the other waitresses even noticed and started filling our coffees and waters..i would say they need to man up the menu as well. reading threw it was like where the meat folks come breakfast is always better with more meat.. go find a few big guys and ask them to read the menu ask what they might add. you have to trust them!!! for one they are your customer. two they are fat.. you don't get fat getting crappy food..trust me i know i am fat.. oh ya and not having hung over staff sure helps..

Eggs Benedict was amazing!! Definetly one of the best I've ever had. Service was great and prices are very reasonable for delicious food and large portions. We will definetly be returning!

Best little diner I've ever been so (so far). They scrambled my eggs to perfection. Their loose Earl Grey tea was to *die* for. The homemade scones & jam was heaven in my watering mouth. And the coffee wasn't terrible! Everyone was super friendly, super attentive, & very, very kind. They even made it a point to chat us up when they refilled our water (rather than just treat us like another table to serve). I am so, so, so glad this place is so close to my home. I want to live here.

Came for brunch before 10am on a Sunday and there were about 10 people waiting to be seated. They don't seem to have a hostess, just a book where you sign in and they call the next name on the list. I was alone so I asked a waitress how long the wait would be and since there was an open seat at the bar she was able to seat me right away. The two small biscuits they give everyone are super fragile and crumbly. They came with the perfect amount of jam in a small dish, which I liked. I had an Oregon Chai, which as far as I could tell was just a regular Chai Latte. I had the German pancakes with peaches and a blueberry sauce. It was my first time having German pancakes and they were very good. Reminded me of a thick crepe with a doughy texture and egg flavor. Very good. The interior decor was simple and well done. The staff was friendly and prompt (filled my water reliably). Definitely a solid experience all around.

Walk in and the first thing you're greeted with is a warm smile. Sit down and a plate of warm scones and jam magicly appears. Coffee is hot, plentiful and the cups refill the instant they get to the half full point avoiding any philosophical conundrums. We had the lemon yogurt pancakes with blueberries and the asparagus, prosciutto & asiago scramble with potatoes . Both were delectable! Judging from the sounds eminating from the adjacent tables I'd venture to say all the food here is just as good as ours was :)

The lay-out and decor of this place seemed pretty top-notch for a "diner" or cafe, and I was really intrigued by the specials menu written in chalk (or dry-erase.. i can't remember) on the wall. A plus - when you sit down you're immediately greeted with an appetizer of (in our case) scones and freezer jam. It seems some other folks have received other things. This may be the only reason I'm giving this place 3 stars. My friend and I excitedly ordered the german pancake (it was really hard for me not to get the gingerbread waffle.. that sounded amazing and I still have hopes that it's tasty) and the baked salmon benedict. Neither dish was worth complimenting. First - the german pancakes! I wish they had written a description of what it was, because it's pretty much an omelette with some cornstarch to prevent it from being so poofy. They were serving them with either rhubarb or pear ginger topping and my friend and I were excited about the pear ginger. I didn't even notice until I got home to my left-overs that they had given us the wrong topping (the rhubarb was tangy and sweet... it was a pretty good rhubarb topping). That just goes to show me that the food was not at all engaging for me to notice that mistake. Second - I should have been wary of a "baked" salmon dish. It was really bland... and the hollandaise wasn't even that great. The potatoes were done well, both soft and crispy at the same time! However, they were also lacking flavor. I had to douse the dish in black pepper and tapatio (which they kindly provided at the table without needing to ask - they must have been prepared for this situation). I'm sad to have such a negative experience, because it seems that many other people have had great times. Please give this a try yourself though, you might be surprised! I don't think I'd go back though, with all the other options for breakfast/brunch in town. This place gives me fond memories of eating at Utopia on Belmont, and I think I'll do that next time instead.

Went there based on reviews for best corned beef hash, but we didn't really like their style of hash with big chunks of everything and an almost stew-like consistency. It just did not satisfy the hankering for corned beef hash. They seem to be proud of it and tout it as a specialty, so somebody must like it........................not us. Cute homey atmosphere and friendly service. Great scones and jam. Kind of weak coffee.

We loved the fresh scones and jam! Everyday I have to fight the urge to drive to Portland, Oregon from Washington State! I absolutely love the Salmon Eggs Benedict! I crave it every day! I cannot wait to visit again soon!!

mmmm yummy! Had breakfast here on Christmas eve and it was wonderful. We had to wait outside due to a line but we were inside within 15 minutes and seated. They bring warm scones and jam to snack on while you wait for food. Service was fast and very friendly and the food was great. I had the salmon and gruyere scramble with wheat toast. So sooo good. They have plenty of healthy, veggie, and other alternative options. I will definitely be hitting this up again!

I give a high nod to Zell's which has been a favorite breakfast spot of mine for some time now. It can be hard to get in but the food is delicious (of course the tiny scones and raspberry jam kick the meal off to a yummy start) and the service is quite good in terms of being prompt and attentive.

Zell's is awesome. The menu is great, the food is tasty, amazing portions, the service is quick (once you get in), and the coffee/tea keeps on coming, refill after refill, which is my kind of place. After a morning at Zell's, I'm not hungry until sometimes the next day. The free scones tip me over the edge - I leave just stuffed. If you go on the weekend, you will have to wait. Thats just the way it is, so I am not sure why there are so many complaints about that. I'd rather wait and have a lovely brunch and coffee than go somewhere less delicious. Also, while you wait, there is FREE hot coffee, so whatever. It's nice. As for the crowd, it is a total mix. Elderly, young, hip, drab, out of towners, native Portlanders, everyone. Never have I seen one "douchebag" here, but I mean, if they do frequent Zell's as some reviews have suggested, oh well. Douches are everywhere, hard to avoid them really. Also yeah, the service is a little brusk. That is not something I mind. I prefer that to over zealous servers who ask how everything is going every five minutes. They may not be excited and happy all the time, but they bring you your food, and anything else you ask for in a timely manner and are polite. Go here for brunch, its good, delicious, lovely, and pretty cheap as well.

Mind you, this is one of my favorite breakfast places in Portland. It has all the hallmarks I look for in a morning venture, save one. Great food, great service, and a fine atmosphere. The coffee is about the only thing I would love to see improved at this place. Otherwise, there is so much to love about Zells. Everything from the generous portions to the wonderful little scones they serve as an amuse-bouche; always feels like an unexpected gift. I'll admit that I've strayed very little from my favorite dishes, though sampling from my wife's plate makes me believe there's something good here for everyone. Personally, I must have one of their eggs benedict when I go. I'm frequently at a toss up between the original and the salmon. FYI, the salmon can be rich, so come hungry or share. As for the original, the ham is so thick and wonderful, it'd make a great meal on it's own. Love it. Of course, plenty of choices, and a specials board, I'm sure will tame anyone's hunger. Just remember that the weekends get pretty packed, so get their early or be prepared to wait. If you have the chance, go early during the week instead so you don't have to pace.

Every veggie brunch meal I try here has been fantastic. Appreciate the cute little scones and the jam with every meal. The servers are friendly and amiable. Any time there is a wait, it's been worth it.

Better-than-average brunch. We went on a Sunday about noon and waited about half an hour, which wasn't too bad. They provided a coffee cart just outside so the door so you could have a cup of coffee while waiting to be seated, which I thought was really considerate. Pros: - Self-serve coffee while you wait for your table - 2 small biscuits with real butter and jam are served to each diner right away when they are seated. This was awesome! - Greek omelet was pretty good - not the best omelet I've ever had, but still quite good - Fried potatoes were pretty flavorful - Good service Cons: - Only one tiny bathroom that both patrons and staff share. I had to wait a long time to use it. - None of the food knocked my socks off

One (or 5) too many drinks last night? Zell's Cafe to the rescue. Get there, put your name on the board, and wait it out for a half hour. You won't regret it. A buddy of mine, and a couple of our lady friends went here after a rough Saturday night at Rontom's. The people there recognized our lady friends and we made a joke insinuating that these girls bring new guys there every weekend. But they were good sports about it. The mini scones that they put in front of you first thing were...charming. And delicious. Everything on the breakfast menu was around $8-$12 depending on quality of ingredient. $10.75 for a salmon omelet was totally fair, and totally tasty. Tons of flavor and the portions were excellent to boot.

I was just looking for a relaxed place to have breakfast with the in-laws and I saw how highly rated this place was. I have to say that I was incredibly impressed and was pleased with my choice. My FIL loved the place as well. The only problem that took it down to 4 stars was the Corned Beef Hash. Hubby ordered it and really enjoyed it, but the beef wasn't corned beef and that deffinately take away from the meal. The pruiscutto and mozerella fritatta was excellent

A rare 5-stars rating that I'm giving to one of the best place to have Brunch Sundays. They have the best E Salmon Egg Benedict in town comic with side of potatoes. Their scones are incredibly good. Last but not least, it's not expensive so you have a really good brunch for an affordable price.

The scones and jam were delicious, other than that it was completely average. I ordered a salty dog cocktail and had to explain what it was to our server, which is no big deal (it's a greyhound with a salted rim) but when she brought it the salted rim was some sort of spicy chili mix, probably what they use on bloody mary's...it was odd but it had taken so long to get the drink that I kept it. I had the eggs benedict and my friend had french toast. We were both underwhelmed, my potatoes were soggy and the poached eggs had slimy whites. The french toast looked like it was grocery store bread and had little flavor to it. The place was packed so they obviously have a following, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there again
