Food is okay but it is a diner and that is what you go for. Eat here frequently and service always good plus you are relaxed.

It's a simple diner. Nothing fancy, hard working staff, and average to decent food at outstandingly low prices. A real nice escape from the overpriced establishments down Division. If you know what you're getting into, you won't be disappointed at all.

I had my doubts about Tom's from the outside. However the girl, @elvisismyman , was getting Hangry (#FearHangry ). I am a big believer that a bathroom is a big indicator of cleanliness. If so, I should have left immediately. Can you say two shades better than the Bathroom in "Saw". However Tom's Omelet caught my attention. It featured Gyro meat with onions and tomatoes. I added jalapeños. The girl wanted the same omelet with Feta (which I despise...feta not The Girl). Mine also arrived with Feta. When I pointed out the issue, our waitress said "I didn't put it in". Do I care? Did I blame you? #ReallyReallyReally The omelet was actually very good. However the service and bathroom really set this place rathet low on the scale. I would give Tom's a 2 in comparison to restaurants of the same class. Not recommended!

Nothing about this place is special except the price but that's something. It's a diner from the 70's that's never been updated. Good parking in the back which is unusual in that area. The food is fast, decent (at least for breakfast) and dirt cheap. You can get a traditional 2 egg breakfast for $6.50 (eggs, links, hash browns and toast). This means you will be fighting for a table with a lot of seniors and others on a fixed income. Never tried the gyro here but love the fact that someone below is bitching about getting one that had feta on it. WTF??

In a town that offers Uzbekistan cuisine home delivered, Maine lobsters flown in fresh every day and at least a hundred Thai restaurants, Tom's may not seem very special. But if good, old-fashioned American fare, served in an unpretentious setting, sounds good to you... Tom's is the place to go. After having our pockets picked by the trendier places in town, my husband and I finally got smart and found Tom's to be a refreshing change. Friendly service. Great prices. Satisfying American cuisine. That's Toms. As a diner, there's absolutely nothing hip about it. And that's the way we like it!

You know what? The wait staff is so very nice for being pretty overworked. They do everything they can to make sure you're happy. My friend and I go for a happy hour there with a meetup group. We get a cocktail each and share the Greek spaghetti and the Greek salad and sometimes even splurge on garlic bread. The food is delicious, the drinks are good and strong, we've never had a bad experience there. We leave pleasantly stuffed, slightly tipsy, and looking forward to our next visit. Go, you'll be glad you enjoyed some plain old-fashioned comfort food Greek style. Hmmmmm, dammit, gotta call my friend. It's time for Tom's again...

Thought we would try their breakfast special. Had one of the rudest waitresses I've ever experienced. We left. Coffee was horrible to boot. Wine go back. Don't recommend.

Five stars for good diner food at diner food prices. Service was fast and friendly, table was clean, food was good. We had the chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, dinner salad, and chicken tenders. Everything was delicious. I'll definitely go back for some good diner grub!

Tom's is the best. Coming from New Jersey (the land of diners) I would love to take any of you pretentious shit talkers to a "Real Diner" in New Jersey and show you what's up. Tom's is a Gem god dammit. It's cheap and you get your money's worth. Yes the waitresses don't have time for you (it's suppose to be that way). The coffee isn't going to blow your hipster socks off and entice your tastebuds... it might actually be "shitty". (once again it's suppose to be that way) The food is not meant to be "critiqued" with fancy smart words and like ummmm stuff. It's meant for you to shovel into your mouth and bring life back to your hungover self. -How about you bring company with you who aren't such a drag or bore that you feel the need to be "entertained" by the waitress. (get better friends) -I don't know why people complain about the bathroom at Tom's it's always been more then pleasant for me. Yeah it's dimly lit, kind of dingy, and outdated but that adds to ambiance, allure, and experience. (I've actually pooped there, twice, OMGZ don't tell anyone) -The menu is simple and too the point but has a lot of options. (read it's simplicity, choose and order) Don't over think it, it's not rocket science. When in doubt just get the two eggs, meat choice, hash browns and toast option and wash it down with a tall Greyhound. If you can't appreciate that classic American breakfast then you are an idiot. (seriously) -In terms of service. It's not "amazeballs" but they get it done. I've actually gotten dare I say "good service" from Tom's on more then one occasion. However, I am a "veteran" of the Food Service Army of America and actually know how to order and act as a consumer. Sooooo... I might have a little advantage. (once again it's not rocket science) - As for the food quality. Yeah it's no James Beard contender for "Best Food in Portland" but by golly it's sustenance. Overall, Tom's is exactly what it should be and I have never had a bad experience there ever. You go there for coffee, drinks, and food. Just be nice to people and order correctly and 9/10 you'll get what you wanted. KEEP KICKING ASS TOM!

The bar side of this place is fine. Nothing about it to really recommend itself, but still fine. The restaurant part of this place is pretty darn "meh" to bad. The diner food they serve is edible but not satisfying, and the place just looks like a lazily converted office building. I'd say, unless you were ragingly hungover to the point where you might die without putting chicken fried steak into your body, regardless of taste or quality, then put in the slight effort to locate another spot.

I've only been to Tom's Restaurant for breakfast, but 1) the staff is awesome 2) the bacon is substantial 3) the food is good in general, and especially for the price. In a town that sometimes charges you $3 for a mediocre fried egg, it honestly feels like a portal through time/otherwise a cheat to find a place that charges you less than $10 for a meal that you can walk away from happy (and having drunk limitless coffee). I've had a great time every time I've been here, and I look forward to going again!

Been going to toms for a while now so here we go. The diner is pleasant and the menu is extensive. Breakfast all day I recommend the country friend steak and pancakes. Also the gyro and milkshake are worth getting too. You can also get full menu next door at the bar area. The bar is ok they got descent prices and a few games to play; 25 cent ski ball and often free pool. There are always people there 8am to close so overall no complaints beyond some small food portions (happy hour french dip = more like half a french dip)

I've never ventured into the bar side of Tom's restaurant and sports bar, but the diner side is one of my favorite places to go for breakfast or lunch. This is the kind of classic diner I think of when I want to spend some time with friends or family, enjoy some delicious food, and sit in a comfortable dining area perfect for chatting. This is not your typical portland hipster hangout. You won't stand around for an hour waiting for a table, only to be ignored by your fashionable but socially stunted waitperson, crammed into a crowded booth, or be surrounded by featured "art" priced at ridiculous prices. No, these places seem to be a dime a dozen around here, and if that's what you're looking for you probably won't like Tom's, but at least you can stumble across one of those without going far. Tom's is a different experience. Friendly staff, great service and delicious food. I've always been pleased especially with the omelettes (the spanish omelet is a delicious cheesy, gooey masterpiece) and Tom's gyro (with skinny fries inside) is one of the most flavorful gyros I've had in portland. A nice, hot, cup of coffee on the side (and trust me, they won't let your cup get empty before someone's refilling it for you!) and you're all set. Every time I've been here I've had great service with a friendly smile. This has been and will continue to be a regular spot for me whenever I want some a tasty meal in a quiet and comfortable place to take friends and family. (skinny jeans and sarcasm not required)

I've only ever been to the bar, but I think I heart Tom's. It's a great little neighborhood dive bar that seems to have free pool often... hard to hate on that. The drinks leave a bit to be desired, but the atmosphere is so chill that I still go there about once a month to unwind. The bartenders are super friendly, so that's a huge plus as well. Oh, and karaoke on Saturday nights is QUITE entertaining. Good times.

You know when your eggs are undercooked and they're slimy and you can see the egg mucus-ey placenta-ey membrane or whatever and have to shove it to the side of your plate and hide it under a piece of toast and put your knife on top of it so it won't slide off or else your gag reflex will give up on you and go on strike for putting it through that sort of torture? That's what eating breakfast at Tom's makes me think of. sorry tom.

For the love of all that is holy, don't eat here. I am certainly not squeamish, but watching a waitress checking her tables and strolling through her section while sucking a smoke is not appealing. Being a former server and bartender myself....that's disgusting. It's never okay. The food is clearly frozen, and completely nauseating. Even our server made a comment about the food not even being nursing home quality. Seriously. However, free pool (I think?) and a fairly non-assuming clientele create enough intrigue to stay for Monday night football. Not in the restaurant itself - that place will suck your soul straight from your body - but the bar is oddly calming in its smoky, gritty way. And although the cocktail waitress is gross, the bartender was completely friendly and very sweet. She was a true champ. The place looked interesting from the bus window over the last year or so, and thanks to the suggestion of a buddy, I had the opportunity to decide that I won't go back unless he wants to reconfirm that I'm terrible at pool. Oh - one last comment. I noticed that 2 (TWO!) people voted that this place was good for kids. Umm - you choke on smoke just standing near this place (I'm a former/intermittent smoker myself, so not one of those sanctimonious types), so please don't ever bring your children here. Please.

Ehhh Gads! Food at Worst! Puke! Gag! The full Name of the place is Tom's Restaurant & Sports Bar. The jist: The restaurant and bar are separated by the bathrooms, therefore you really can't peek from either area. The restaurant is good if you like to people watch, the booths backrests are low enough so you have a clear line of sight of the whole place and the streets outside. The dining area is about half the size of a Denny's. And if you had a quite a girth around yer stomach you will soon notice how close the tables are to the seats (in the booths). There were 2 waitresses and someone at the bar. The Food! Well I ordered the Salisbury Steak and instead got a conoction that resembled more like meatloaf. It even tasted more like meatloaf, I double checked my receipt and it said Salisbury Steak. The gravy was a icky color like a light brown curry look. Icky poo! The so called bellpeppers inside the moatloaf looked more like someones bugers! The taste of the gravy was just bad as it looked. Icky poo! The steamed vegetables was left way way too long in the water. Because that what it tasted like! Water! The vegetables was all mushy and watery. Icky poo! Barf... oh yeah somebody told me they make homemade cinamon roll or something. Pssht I ain't going back.

It really is a sweet little place...not going to lie. The waitress was too but the food wasn't anything to write home about. It did smell a little funny... But I really liked it for some reason, local diner style...hang out with friends, chill out and build towers with those little smucker jam thingys too bad it's not open late (I think it closes at like 9:30?) LAME SAUCE long story short...cool little diner and way closer to me then Denny's up on Grand (?) so that'll keep me coming back

Usually have good breakfast here. Stopped at Denny's today. No comparison. Tom's has nicer, more efficient servers, better breakfast by far. Quiter. Faster. Waaayyyy better food. Now I consider it a great breakfast.

Bad service, bad food, bathroom smelled like mold. My daughter felt sick after her garden burger was half consumed. I cannot believe they called my scramble an omelet garnished with rock hard avocado. Too bad. Good location, disappointing experience.

When we lived near here, this was our usual Saturday morning breakfast place and we also came certain nights for the full bar and games on the big screens. The food is usually excellent (more so during the day) and the prices are very reasonable. The front side is a classy diner, good for kids and groups, and the back is a full sports bar with pool tables, booths, flat-screens, video poker, digital jukebox, and lots of tables (its very roomy). The drink prices and pours are very good and you can stay comfortably relax all night long in the bar. The people and the staff are both great here, as are the owners, who actively run the place (and well IMO).

Everything I want from a diner. Fast, quick, and courteous service. Great prices with pretty good food. I say pretty good because this is portland and Tom's is definitely diner quality food, but not by any means in the bad way, just a touch cheaper tasting then a five star restaurant. That being said, their breakfast is filling and the chicken quesadilla is actually one of the best I've found in town. This has become one of our go to places for a cheap, quick, and filling meal.

RUDE! RUDE! RUDE! The girl there acted like she didn't see us because I was there with my client! I had to go tell her because clearly she was just walking around and talking to other customers sitting at the bar. She didn't even bring our drinks either! Her excuse was her boss had to talk to her. No Bitch, you were clearly ignoring us!

Greek spaghetti, hummus w/ pita, or quesadilla for $3. Homemade soup or tater tots for $2. Wells $3, draught pint $2, Micro $3, hornitos tequila $4, Jim beam $4, red or White House wine $4.

I was in the sports bar section and it was my first time here. A style of restaurant that on the east coast might be called a "diner." Inexpensive food, you just go in, sit down, eat good food and leave. Unpretentious. I've driven by this place for literally years and never even considered going in because it looks like...well, kind of like a diner, which aren't a thing in Portland. No chalkboards with trippy, multi-colored chalk, no art you feel like you should like but don't, nothing hanging from the ceiling that annoys you in an ironic way, no super loud music that you wish you were cool enough to like and that you were capable of shouting over while trying to have a conversation. Boy, I sound like I hate breakfast joints in Portland. Not true, but sometimes you just want to go and eat breakfast and not wait for an hour for food that's a little weird in a place that's trying too hard.

Under no circumstance are egg whites ever to be uncooked and potatoes should never be raw. Both are gross and raw egg whites are dangerous. Tom's is going to be gone if they don't get it together.

Just had breakfast there for the first time, it was 7am on a Wednesday. 5 of us guys showed up for our monthly Breakfast of Champions gathering. We were the first people in this morning and had the run of the place. $5.55 for biscuits and gravy, 2 sausage links and an egg! Quite a deal. The coffee was cheap and watered down; just the way we like it for our mid-week breakfast rendezvous. Waitress was plenty nice and our food came out fast.

There are a lot of places to have breakfast around here, but I find I often end up at Tom's because I like their down to earth food and service. It may not be as "hipsteresque" as nearby places, but it's much better with better service than some of the more highly rated places around. When you get tired of hipster service and meh food, I suggest coming here for a real breakfast without waiting.

"In a dive bar, in a West End town, call the police, there's a mad man around..." There were no madmen around and our breakfast was really good. I'm not giving five stars because it wasn't gourmet-ish or unique, but I can't really say anything negative. This is one of those old school breakfast joints and if you come expecting this, you will leave happy. I really liked that their coffee cups are old school and smaller. It felt like I drank a "ton" of coffee, but it was probably equivalent to a cup and a half at some other place. I had the vegetarian omelet with cheddar and it was very tasty. It had lots of bell peppers and onions, which I love. The portion size was perfect, not huge like some of those chain restaurant omelets, but not tiny either, it was just right. I got the blueberry pancakes for my side and they were some of the best flapjacks I've had in town. They were light and fluffy, with lots of berries. I always eat my pancakes without syrup to cut down on the sugar, which sometimes results in a blah flavor experience, but not in this case. Tom's pancakes were perfectly delicious with only some butter. The service was spot on, with lots of drink refills and fast delivery of the food. One of my friends thought the waitress could have been friendlier, but I was fine with it, she was totally efficient and quick. Since my name is Tom, friends have always teased me, saying things like, "oh, you own a cafe, we didnt' know!" Yeah, right, haha. But I can now say I'm proud of my "namesake" diner and would gladly return for breakfast.

Best diner in PDX. Been going here for 5 years, and the food has always been homemade, fresh and healthy. I've NEVER been disappointed in five years and I am picky. The prices are so good. We are talking $7 for a hand stuffed green pepper, with veggies and mash and soup or salad. The service isn't fast as fast as other places, but I think that's half due to the waitresses and the other half due to the fact that the food is made-to-order fresh. I will miss Tom's when I move away.

  • Tom M.

Tom's epitomizes the greasy-spoon diner in America. It's missing the shiny aluminum trailer, but other than that, it's all here. Mediocre food and nothing to write home about. We were referred here by a friend but honestly, I was disappointed. The service was there and she was friendly but beyond that it's a thumbs down

    (2)
  • Christine N.

So done with Tom's. Used to love it, but every time i go the service gets progressively worse. Now the wait staff has heaped a pile of bad attitude onto their slower-than-molasses service. I have so many other choices - why would i come here and put up with that?

I stopped in earlier this week to use the ATM and grab a cup of coffee. Boy is this place a throwback! And for a moment, I thought I had been transported back to the Midwest. The front restaurant section had wall-to-wall linoleum and an appropriately dressed waitress who called me "honey". The back bar section featured "colourful" (and older) locals, gambling machines, a dive vibe, and an added touch of stale cigarette smell. And it's scary on how much this place reminded me of back home Iowa.

  • Cameron J.

Great little hole in the wall place with good, cheap food, diner-style. The service can be a little slow sometimes, but it doesn't affect the experience much at all. Both dinner and breakfast options are good. It's a great place to unwind after work.

  • Rex N.

The ladies who work at Tom's are very nice and when they have the opportunity to come around, they make an effort. The cooks in the kitchen knock out a grip of food on the quickskis. HOWEVER they're desperately understaffed for what appeared to be a less-than-insane breakfast service and subsequently, i sat and watched table after table's worth of food sit and die in the window and on the counter... my mimosa was warm and flat and tasted like hobo wine my bacon and toast were straight COLD my eggs and hashbrowns were lukewarm. it was a saddening and disheartening breakfast. had i had more to drink the night before, i might not have noticed/cared. i probably won't return until i'm severely hungover and need some cold grease to suck up the booze. sorry tom's.

I lived in the Hawthorne/Division area for a little over 16+ years, and, in the entire time that Tom's Restaurant was within a mere hop and a skip for me, I never went there for breakfast. With Cup & Saucer Cafe, Jam on Hawthorne, and other more popular (and populous) breakfast joints around, it was no wonder. But, this morning, while in search of some chicken fried steak goodness, I found myself at Tom's, and the experience was just OK. The service was distracted. My waitress busied herself with, well, "busy work" -- after all, I was only one of three customers she had in the joint at the time -- that it took her forever to realize I needed a refill of their unexciting decaf. Thankfully, the place wasn't busy, and my food came fairly quickly after I'd ordered. The chicken fried steak was crispy, the gravy was savory, and the eggs-over-easy was done just right. The hashbrowns were a disappointment; it wasn't crispy enough. In fact, only 10% of it had any kind of crunch. And, no, I don't think I have to tell them how to make hashbrowns. They simply failed with it. And the Fred Meyer wheat bread "toast" was slightly limp. Maybe my expectations were too high. After all, Tom's is a "greasy spoon," and, therefore, doesn't have to try too hard. Besides, you can't really fvck up fried eggs so badly. In the end, I'm going to relegate Tom's for those times when inebriation is the order of the day. But, for breakfast, there are infinitely better choices elsewhere.

  • Jacob M.

I read several of the comments on the bad food etc. I must disagree. Our food came out fairly quickly, it was still hot and the portions were great. The pancakes were fluffy and eggs were cooked perfectly. I very much enjoyed it.

Typical diner kinda scene I wouldn't have expected to find on a corner in this area. Your grandpa's kinda place because he can't really taste anything anymore and he prefers cheap to tasty. They did what anyone with a basic idea of how to cook could accomplish with no pizazz whatsoever. Nothing special.....I'd be more likely to go to Denny's (which is my last choice on the diner list if I'm actually planning on eating) But, on the other side of the coin, they did nothing terribly wrong either. Waitress was kind, place was clean, food wasn't weird in any way. Just a plain, bland, no thought put into it kinda place. Go elsewhere if you're under 70.

This is for the Bar, not the restaurant, though they are connected. Small but passable beer selection. Overly sweet dirty martini. Totally rad taco omelette and hashbrowns. We were there for game one of the NBA playoffs and had a good time. The crowd was excited about the game, but not overly raucous. It was a pretty good experience overall (except the loss to the Rockets :P ).

I love the Richmond neighborhood and drive past Tom's all the time. My buddy and I dropped by to play pool and have a Coke Saturday May 21, at about 11 PM. Before I could even say anything the bartender said, "I can' t serve you". I calmly replied why? She repeated the phrase with no regard to my inquiry, then we were told to leave. When I was a kid I busted up my leg really bad on a skate board, and have a pronounced limp when I spend allot on time on my feet. Saturday was one of those nights. I was bored, and doing the best I could to find a fun diversion. It is VERY HURTFUL to be discriminated against! I try to mask it because it embarrasses me, but I was hurting badly. I had a friend who sustained a head injury in a car accident. His speech is markedly impaired and although he does drink, your initial instinct might be that he was intoxicated. This bartender is brunette, 30-ish, average height and carrying a few extra pounds. Some training in etiquette should be included in Drink Mixing 101. if it were available I'd give this place 1/2 a star.

The food here is not so great. But skip over to the bar side and grab a really cheap drink, poured fair. You might not want to stay long though, the place is crawling with weirdos and is about as un-neighborhoody as you could imagine. This location is so central and perfect, if they made a few changes inside the place would blow up huge. But for now: cheap drinks, lots of TV's, dudes from Gresham trying to sell you shady stuff and useful if you want to forget your in SE Portland for a sec. Friendly but also very out of place staff.

If it were possible to give no stars, I would. This place is terrible, I'm confused as to how it manages to stay in business. I went with my friend, and we spent a good ten minutes waiting for the waitresses (there were two!) to come by and give us menus. Finally I had to go up and ask...(!) and then wait another ten minutes for a drink order and finally have the completely incompetent wait staff mess up a very simple food order and completely neglect us for the rest of the time. As for the food...my pita was drowned in what looked and tasted like watery mayonnaise with canned garlic added and the "salad" was ten cents worth of wilted iceberg lettuce and oil. My friend's food was even worse, it looked like plastic and tasted like burning. Awful. Just awful.

This Biz Markie's song will sum up my review for Tom's, "Have you ever met a girl that you tried to date But a year to make love she wanted you to wait Let me tell ya a story of my situation I was talkin to this girl from the u.s. nation The way that I met her was on tour at a concert She had long hair and a short miniskirt I just got onstage drippin, pourin with sweat I was walkin through the crowd and gues who I met I whispered in her ear, come to the picture booth So I can ask you some questions to see if you are a hundred proof I asked her her name, she said blah-blah-blah She had 9/10 pants and a very big bra I took a couple of flicks and she was enthused I said, how do you like the show? She said, I was very amused I started throwin bass, she started throwin back mid-range But when I sprung the question, she acted kind of strange Then when I asked, do ya have a man, she tried to pretend She said, no I dont, I only have a friend Come on, Im not even goin for it This is what Im goin sing You, you got what I need but you say hes just a friend And you say hes just a friend, oh baby You, you got what I need but you say hes just a friend But you say hes just a friend, oh baby You, you got what I need but you say hes just a friend But you say hes just a friend So I took blah-blahs word for it at this time I thought just havin a friend couldnt be no crime cause I have friends and thats a fact Like agnes, agatha, germaine, and jacq Forget about that, lets go into the story About a girl named blah-blah-blah that adored me So we started talkin, getttin familiar Spendin a lot of time so we can build up A relationship or some understanding How its gonna be in the future we was plannin Everything sounded so dandy and sweet I had no idea I was in for a treat After this was established, everything was cool The tour was over and she went back to school I called every day to see how she was doin Everytime that I called her it seemed somethin was brewin I called her on my dime, picked up, and then I called again I said, yo, who was that? oh, hes just a friend Dont gimme that, don't ever gimme that Just bust this You, you got what I need but you say hes just a friend And you say hes just a friend, oh baby You, you got what I need but you say hes just a friend But you say hes just a friend, oh baby You, you got what I need but you say hes just a friend But you say hes just a friend." That's right Tom's and I just friends, thanks to 3 stars Jalapeno Poppers. Youuuuuuuuuuuuuu....you got what I needddddd....

That Salisbury-ness was threatening to run down my leg on the walk (more like all-out sprint) back to Belmont. Now I know what Fred and Toody Cole were talking about in 1980 when they sang "THERE'S A PANIC, THERE'S A PANIC, THERE'S A PANIC ON 39TH!!!"

It's close. It's cheap. It's friendly. It's....half-decent. We've been to Tom's a few times because they have okay breakfast and okay lunch. The space is typical diner only more sanitized and boring, although you can see what is likely a seedy bar through the doorway into the 39th Street Sports Pub. But we haven't had a bad meal or bad service yet. The place won't win any awards but, as a neighborhood diner, it works.

It's diner food and I thought it was a-ok. The service was great - very attentive and my coffee was always filled. I had a simple 2 over-easy eggs, ham, hashbrowns and wheat toast. It was good and cheap and the only thing that stops this from being a 4-star review was the hasbrowns were a touch too greasy for me.
