A true neighborhood classic haunt. The sausage dog with coney sauce is among the best I've ever had. Coney fries with cheese makes the perfect side. Very old school feel and I love it.

Loved it! It should be on the tv show Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. The burger was delicious. I loved the crunchy toasted bun and the bacon was fantastic. The fries were salty and perfect, even though I'm not a huge fan of fries. It's also pretty cheap. This place is a winner!

This is the worst place for customer service! I had put in my orders but didn't get called for my food until I asked, after 30min, where is my food? Oh, we lose your orders. I will never come here again.

  • Christine B.

Went there for the first time today and was not impressed. There was not much flavor in the long coney dog my husband and I got, and the fries were icky. The coney sauce is a light orange color which is weird as I am used to it being more brown/red, and did not have much flavor. The fries were limp and greasy. I was not expecting a 5 star meal, but was expecting better than I received. Sad too, as we have just recently moved to this area and I was hoping for a little bit of home (I grew up in Jersey about 20mins from NYC). Oh and they were not really busy, so I cannot even chalk it up to being rushed.

See my Chang's review, as most of that applies here. Fuck art. Let's dance. Real food at real prices; no pretentious BS.

You can't beat old school coney dogs and platters of fresh greasy fries. Hot dogs are top quality, they have that fresh "snap" to them you can only get from a local butcher. Everyone working is always friendly, and their prices are very reasonable. Also, even though it is in an old airstream trailor, it is always very very clean- more so than the average restaurant which tops it off for me.

  • Kate P.

I would eat there again, thought the burgers were nothing to write home about. Next time I go, I will try a hot dog. The place is dingy and very run down, service is OK, no bathrooms. The ceiling is low and dining rooms are tiny, so plan to eat outside if you are claustrophobic.

I have grown up with Roakes and I can not say enough good things about them. Best Coney Dog Ever! Love the coney fries and the coney burger. YUMMY Food! Homemade Fries! Wish there were more than 2 locations. A Portland Staple!

We have been a customer for over 30 years. Use to be awesome. Now they can't seem to spare any of their sauce. These are the weakest coney islands we have ever had. More bun than sauce. Could'nt eat it was so dry. My husband called they said that's just the way we always make them! They don't seem to care that they had a disappointed customer.........I suggest we all ban going to ROAKE"S (on McLoughlin) When the manager & owner don't care, who does....

    (1)
  • Mark C.

Like the dogs. Had a nice snap to them. Fries were good, skip the chili it is nasty with lots of beans unless you like chili with lots... of beans.

I grew up with a home town burger joint and all others are compared to Frisko Freeze in Tacoma. So far, Roake's is my Portland Frisko. Tiny drive in, flavor-full fresh cooked burgers with just enough grease to make the experience worthwhile, some of the BEST fresh-cut fries I've had the pleasure of meeting... When I need my burger fix, I'll be hanging in the parking lot checking out the cool cars and bikes that seem to congregate here.

  • Denise P.

The coney dog and coney fries ROCK. Nothing more to say.

  • Justin T.

One of the best burgers I've had in a while. I'd been hungry for a burger and sometime fast food will handle that craving, but kinda makes you feel blah afterwards. Plus, Roake's is local, it looks like its been there a long time, and its doing healthy business. I had the Super Roake's Favorite, which is a burger inn a half French roll with this sauce called Conney Island Sauce, I liked it - sort of a mustard, ketchup, bbq sauce, hard to describe. Fries are shoe string and they have Conney Island fries which have tomatoes and cheese on them. Ignorance is bliss and I wish I would have sat in my car or stayed there and ate my fries while they were still warm rather than dumping them out in the to-go bag so the grease would be absorbed, but no I went home and they were coldish and I was full from the burger I just scarfed. They have car service if your head lights are on, but apparently they don't have enough people for them to do that right now. Watch out where you park in the lot, you can get boxed in. Now accepting credit cards.

I've never been this excited over a hotdog! Coney dog+chocolate malt+coney fries=happy tummy

Only the best coney islands on the planet-- make sure you get them with everything on them including fresh onions. This place has been rocking in this location forever! Don't ever close, PLEASE!!!

Ah Roakes, I have been coming here ever since I was a kid and I will keep coming back. This isn't one of those places I go to just to reminisce about old times and how good the food was, I go here because the food is still really good, just the way I remember it. That is something rare I realize, after re-visiting so many things I enjoyed as a child I have become painfully aware that some things are just best left as a fond memory. Not Roakes. The food is still great, especially the coney dogs. I sometimes will order one of their awesome burgers, but I feel almost guilty if I leave without having a coney dog, so I just have to take one for the team and have both. While the coney sauce is absolutely amazing, and goes great on the burgers and fries, It's not just the sauce, but the hot dogs themselves, that make the coney dog stand out. They have have that delicious snap to them that you only can get from real hot dog you would get from a butcher shop. Roakes also has good shakes and decent fries too. The only thing holding the fries back from greatness is that they tend be be too oily. Other than that I can't think of anything I would change about the place. I love how it's like a little time capsule that according to my Dad, hasn't changed since the 60's. By far the best hot dogs in Portland.

Been going here since I was kid, one of the best!

  • jim S.

Sometimes I just need a hotdog. This place has great dogs. Sometimes I get the Conney sauce sometimes not. If you get the sauce your going to get it on ya. The fries are those little shoestring ones with the skin still on. OMG they are good. But like the other guy said "eat them while they are still hot". Not a good food to try to eat while driving, especially with the sauce. It has a 50's look to it. I think this was Mr Roake's first place. Anyway great food.

    (5)
  • Mike G.

I grew up in Jennings Lodge and this place was the BEST! It was always a dump and always busy....well it is still a dump...The flavors are NOT the same as they used to be! The original formulas for the coney's are not the same at all! Tastes very bland now....not worth the stop in my opinion.....

    (2)
  • Tim L.

I was mildly disappointed by my first visit here, but only because my expectations were so high. After seeing the place and reading all the rave reviews, I thought this was going to be the ultimate chili dog experience. And it was pretty great - my only complaint is that the dogs themselves weren't more flavorful. A good all-beef dog would have put them over the top. Also, I didn't grow up eating Roake's so I'm sure that's a factor as well. I would go back if I found myself in the area, and I'd also like to go again to see how the burgers rate.

The real deal hamburger joint, little place sometimes dirty. The food is the shit. Try a footlong coney with the coney fries

Great burgers, so tasty! And the fries hit the spot! It was a perfect stop before going to the river.

Ok, so we all know that reviews are in the teeth and taste buds of the reviewer. That's why you read multiple reviews to see if the writer may be like you and therefore, you might agree with their culinary assessments. So. This is original dive food. The buns on the long sausage and the long hot dog were like Franz white fluff finest. No, the nutritional value is not high. Yes, it gloms to the top of your mouth and may have to scraped off with your tongue. The hot dog is your basic weiner, in color, smell and taste. The sausage is not some New Seasons hand seasoned, permeated with the kiss of virgins either. But, if you are on that corner of McLoughlin, and you want to support a local business with extremely friendly help and pay a VERY reasonable price. Go to Roake's. One long sausage dog with their famous chili sauce (so not spicy) and one long hot dog with relish only, one water, one medium root beer = $10.35. Only Pepsi products on site. Fine. Very Fine.

  • Kyle A.

When you're down for some greasy "bad" food - this place is the spot. The coney dog with onions is amazing. The fries are fresh off the grill. The customer service is always great as well. Located right on 99E - you really can't miss this place. The only down fall of this place is it's location to enter and exit. They currently have Coke Product and the shakes are bomb too! Say goodbye to your diet if you want to try this place out! One dawg please!

    (5)
  • Holley R.

This place looks so cute on the outside, total old school, divey burger bar where you're expecting something amazing to shock you and come out of it. Not only was it not amazing, it wasn't even good. Limp soggy fries, burger with no flavor...the type of burger that could pass maybe 20 years ago but this is Portland and everyone has stepped up their game. No thanks.

    (1)
  • C L.

This place is a complete dump and the food tastes terrible. I had a chili dog when I went. The hotdog was by far the world hot dog I've ever eaten anywhere in the world. I ended up throwing my meal away. Save your money and go somewhere else!

All I have to say is, try everything and you can't go wrong. Best food on McLaughlin.

    (4)
  • Tomasina H.

rude service, I ordered chili cheese fries, regular fries and 2/coney's and one fry was not given to me I paid for it and when I got home I called them and they pretty much said too bad and called me a liar. first of all why would I lie about a fry not being in my bag I know its petty for $1.85. WHATEVER!!! Roakes has bad customer service. the Asian girl and heavyset lady were demeaning, rude and bitchy I will never be back EVER!!!!!!

  • Michael N.

Been coming here since I was old enough to eat hot dogs. And my dad had been eating here since before he was in High School (go Oregon City HS!) He graduated in 1954! Excellent food! Same recipes for all those years! I heard once several years ago a big Cony place in Cony Island tried to buy the Cony recipe from the owners and she flat turned them down. Keep up the good work guys! By the way, the deluxe burger is the best in the area!

    (5)
  • Blake S.

Excellent food at an excellent price. I'm never disappointed by anything that I order when I come here. My only complaints are that I wish I could order a smaller fry than they offer, I find it hard to finish both a burger and fries when I order them. Also the place is very small and very busy, so it can be hard to find seating, especially when it's not a nice day out so you can't sit outside. Parking can also be a hassle because some of their parking spots in the front block the ones in the back, so you can't pull out if you park in back and someone parks in front of you. Food is great though, some of the best burgers around.

    (4)
  • Josh C.

Coney dogs, burgers, milkshakes, and fries, oh my! It looks like this place hasn't changed much since it opened in '38, but the food is food stuff. Dining room is not much unless you've seen the inside of a sardine can, so you may want to call ahead and place your to-go order. It'll cost you a bit more, but you should pay the extra for tomatoes on your coney fries--you'll thank me.

    (5)
  • Melanie A.

Good food. Horrible service. They basically rush you for your order whilst yelling that other orders are ready in your face. Rude af.

    (3)
  • Ricky N.

This place was great. I got a long coney dog and fries. The fries are some of the best I have ever had. The dog was great and very large for the money. I will definitely go back and maybe try the burger. Cash only but with an ATM.

So I remember coneyislands from when I was a kid and I have been on search for that same taste for many years. I thought it was from another restaurant on this McLoughlin strip that too has been around for many many years. I have been going to that said restaurant and have been disappointed for years thinking the recipe must have been changed as there coney has a sweet relish like sauce on it. YUCK! Now I have driven by Roakes thousands of times and never really thought of stopping in. Today was the day. I went in about 11:30am. The building itself is tiny and if your over six feet tall you would surely have to crouch to get in. There was one patron enjoying hs lunch. The place was neat and clean and has some interesting history to read on the walls if your into that sort of thing. I ordered the Coney Island with the works, fries and a drink. I found a seat and did'nt wait long. The service here is fast an efficient and food is served with a smile. I like that. Now I'm a crunchy fry kind of guy. The fist thing I noticed was soggy soft fries hmmm but oh the taste. They were seasoned beautifully and I found they needed no salt or ketchup they were deliciously perfect. What a nice surprise. Now onto the coney Island. One bite and I knew I had found it! That REALLY REALLY GOOD coney island from my past. The cheesy, spicy, hot sauce was it. If you don't know a good Coney go to Raokes and find out what it is supposed to taste like. YUM YUM YUM! I will definitively be back.

  • Amber P.

Horrible! Worst hot dog I have ever had and the service was nothing to brag about. Will never go back. Gave me food poisoning as well! If I could give negative stars I would.

    (1)
  • Bob K.

I had a coney and my son had a burger. Coney was just ok, and the burger was thin and dry. Fries were fresh cut but soggy. Coney sauce was a slight plus. The ladies working here were friendly and deserve 3-4 stars but the food didn't make up for it.

  • Amanda H.

Growing up, my family would enjoy coming here for a standard, classic American meal. Now I am vegan, I still crave their fries; they are perfectly melty and delicious with a good amount of small, crunchy ones as well. As I can't eat anything else there, so this review is for the fries!

    (4)
  • Shelley M.

Omg the best burgers in town, and i love the fries. Cute atmosphete. Pretty quick service for being a fresh order to cook type place.

    (5)
  • Breylan D.

This place is awesome! It's a lot like an old school drive up I used to go to in DC as a kid. All of their food is made to order, so you know it's fresh. The portions are generous and the price is low - if you're looking for a quick bite in Milwaukie, and you don't want to go to a chain, you should definitely check this place out.

    (4)
  • Kellie W.

The food's not too bad (didn't care for the relish/mayo sauce, fries were really soggy/greasy BUT...the service was terrible. I waited over 20 minutes for a small order after the cook said it would be 5-7 minutes AND they messed up 4 orders in that same amount of time. I also had to listen to an employee talk negatively about customers. Couldn't believe it!

    (2)
  • Casey S.

I've been going here for years. You may be put off by the appearance of the building/location, but it's well worth it! The conie sauce is the best and the prices are just right. I definitely recommend it!!

    (4)
  • Dave B.

Hands down this place has the best burger in the whole Portland metro area! The long dogs are great too. In fact I can never decide which to order, so I order both. It is well worth it. My family has been customers at Roakes since the 70s. My brother & I don't live in the area anymore but when we come to town we both stop and brag to the other. I love this place!!!

    (5)
  • Jennifer M.

Good little burger and hot dog dive. Foods fast and fresh but don't expect any extras or substitutions. Milkshake was a but disappointing but fries and burgers were great. This place can get quite busy on peak sunny days and togo might be the food option.

    (4)
  • Reed W.

I usually get a coney here but tried the Roake Burger this time for $3.50.....glad I did....better burger than most other places I've tried in Portland....and I've tried most of them. Very simple with a good patty, gravy, special sauce, pickles and onions.....hard to beat this burger for $3.50!

  • adam b.

I just moved in to the neighborhood and I'm stoked to be able to walk or ride a bike to this great slice(wrong pun for sure) of Milwaukie. Sometimes I just got to have a chocolate shake, cheese burger and fries; this place hits the spot! I'm from California and tend to compare food such as this to In-N-Out. Roake's is different for sure, but just as good overall. They keep the menu focused, but there are plenty of options to try out. They even do a veggie burger that my girlfriend really likes!

    (4)
  • Jeff B.

You have to get the coney with onions! Delicious! And trust me you need to buy two at a time!!!! Hands down the best coney island hotdog in the pacific northwest Dont judge a book by its cover stands true here, because this little shack has been serving their coney's for as long as I can remember! Look at Nathan's, Roakes is the real deal!

    (5)
  • Chris W.

Great place for a burger or a hotdog! They've been making it the same way for years and I see why. Delicious!

    (3)
  • Jesse C.

Roake's serves the best Coney style dog in town. Sorry Nick's. Fries are little grease balls but so good. Alone or with Coney sauce and cheese. Portland/Milwaukie institution. Great people. Well worth the trip.

    (5)
  • Jacob H.

Wonderful. But make sure to call ahead so you can walk up to the window and just pick up your food. Best way to do it.

    (5)
  • Nana U.

These dogs are ok but if you want to try a real 5 star dog, if you are ever at DisneyLand make sure you drive over to Knott's Berry Farm and get a dog from Pink's. You don't even have to go into the park. This is a 2nd location. The original is in downtown Hollywood and has been going for 60+ years.

  • Ben K.

Pros: Great hot dogs, good shakes, good prices Cons: Kind of dumpy Sometimes it's nice to find divey, slightly dumpy places where the food matters. Places that are no nonsense, stick to the basics, good food. Roake's is that type of place. It's so small and easy to miss, but if you go there, you are in for a damn good dog. I got the Coney Dog and loved it. The dog was long and beefy, the bun was perfectly toasted and buttered, the toppings were of perfect proportion, just delicious. I washed it down with a chocolate shake that was a great complement to the dog. The inside is small, with only a few seats. It's old and it's not the cleanest of places, but the food is good. I will be back. Give it a try, especially if you want something that's good and basic.

Roakes it the BOOOOMB!!! If you're a militant vegan freak with dinner plates hanging out your ears, steer clear. I don't wanna see you anyhow. Stay on Belmount where you belong. If you like Micky-d's GTFO. You'll find some around MLK. But if you want an old-school absolutely amazing, high quality burger & fresh fries in a place where NOTHING'S nuked, or the best Coney island (pretty sure the ONLY Coney Isalnd) in town, hit them up, and you won't be disappointed. AWESOME milkshakes, Rich-boy burger is amazing, and the place overall is like an old-school diner. They need to be in Salem/Albany or something, because they're just too good for the Portalnd hipster crowd. Thankfully they're not in their sespool areas. I'm half bummed that the one I go to has the lotto machines now, because it attracts the pathetic degenerate gambler types, but they're hiding in the back getting their fix anyhow. I HIGHLY recommend them if you want to be taken back in time. Seriously, NOTHING's changed since like the 50's or something. ROAKES ROCKS! If you missed the point, it's a really great old-school burger/hotdog joint with quality, and fresh, freshly cooked food. ;) Pauly. P.S. fat people with no self control should avoid the place.... You CAN get even fatter. PPS, if you're impatient, call in your order as you start to head out. Like I said, they don't nuke rotting stuff that's been laying around all day. It's cooked to order.

    (5)
  • Ryan C.

amazing coney island sauce! Don't come here expecting a small portioned healthy meal. However expect a greasy bag if you're ordering take-out, large portions and unhealthy delights that scream for a heart attack! Just plain good ;)

    (5)
  • Lindsay H.

Used to be 5 stars, the last few times I've gone the buns are really soggy with the hot dogs. But the flavor is still delicious!

    (3)
  • Kristine P.

Wow. As I was waiting for my friend to show up I watched the people that were coming up to the window to order. This could have been the setting for a documentary on obesity. Which, I felt was a good sign of just what I was about to eat. I ordered the Long Coney Dog with onions and a side of french fries. The coney sauce was a little bland but paired with the dog, mustard and onions it was a perfectly good coney dog. The fries were fresh but just not that great.. not really crispy enough for my liking. I will definitely return and try something new.. possibly the burger.

    (4)
  • Nick H.

I give this place a 2.5. There really is nothing about it to give it points. The foot long chili dogs are $4, but the taste is nothing special. The chili cheese fries were also $4 and so-so. Not gross, just low quality and not worth the price. There are better places, even fast food, like Wendy's chili cheese fries. Something has to give, either better taste or cheaper price. I don't wish them bad, but I won't go back.

    (3)
  • Spencer D.

I'm a regular here and always have to get extra Coney sauce. It's the bomb. The dog is always delicious, and the fries...Oh THE FRIES. Get the Coney Fries with a Big Coney and a drink and you won't be disappointed. This place is a little grungy looking, but it provides a punch for those nights where greasy, flavorful, well priced food is a must. Give them a shot. It's a great part of this part of town.

    (4)
  • Aaron B.

Ahh Roake's a tiny place, serving food for people like me with a huge appetite! Killer Coney Dogs, check Killer Coney Fries, check Killer Burgers, check Good Customer Service, check Good Prices and Clean, check You get the idea. We love Roake's and hope they can keep their tradition going for a long time to come!

  • john A.

My all-time favorite Coney dog! I pretty much love everything about this little historic diner. The Coney dog is so much better than any other i've tried elsewhere. Most places serve up a chili dog and call it a Coney, not Roake's! I'm a sucker for house cut fries and they are perfect here, a little greasy but nom-nom! There used to be multiple locations around the Portland area, but now I think there's only 2 or 3.

This has been a hot-dog stand in continuous service out here on McGloughlin since 1937. Can you believe that? 1937? What the heck else was out there on McGloughlin back in '37? I doubt if any of the roads were even paved for several decades after that. Just think, this weenie stand has outlasted so many stalwart businesses out this way! Gi Joes, Scott Thomason (remember that creepy little weasel?) and his never- ending used car and truck lots throughout Milwaukie and Gladstone into the O.C.; think of all the seedy strip clubs and dive bars that have come and gone and sadly, a store that used to be directly across from Roakes that sold original/out of print vinyl 45 records (I collected them for years for my vintage juke-box), that was put out of business in large part due to Napster, in the late 90s... Unlike the Roakes out by the airport, this one accepts plastic. They're open later (now till 2200, thank you!), but no Happy Hour, no W/C and no gambling lounge at this one. Some of us aren't saddened by this last fact--not in the least. Neither locations has a drive-thru, which is too bad. It seems to me the rear of the building could be easily modified to accommodate drive-thru. I can't help but think this would be a well-deserved shot in the arm to this elder statesman o' the community. If you've never had a Coney-style dog @ Roakes, or one of their burgers (I especially like the Little John), do yourself a favor and check 'em out. Rumor has it that they continue to faithfully pay the patent fees to use the chili sauce perfected and that is still used @ the original Coney Island. Oh, that's some tasty chili sauce--- you can order it by itself and eat it by the bowl, and indeed I do!

this place does hot dogs and burgers.. i am not a fan of chili so i don't partake in some of the items on the menu. size here is good, people are nice, food is fast (usually under 5 mins), pricing is reasonable - i don't think they have many things over $5

My buddy has been eating here for fourty + years. Foot long hotdogs with chili and onion, I had to try. I was not disappointed. The chili reminds me of Tommys in L.A., which makes since, because they

The dive of all dives. Fits about 8 people at once. A couple picnic tables out front. But they have THE best coney dogs around. Place has been around forever, and for good reason - deliciousness.

Ever wonder about those dedicated Italian Ladies that you see in videos of the Vatican? You know, the ones crawling on their hands and knees in their black dresses with substandard knee pads and rags wrapped around their hands. Many of them have been crawling for miles over the Appenines or, Lord knows, swimming the Tiber River. Obviously, this act of dedication is to show their commitment to a higher form of enlightenment. And NOW, I know what that higher form is... Tucked away between the Sistine Chapel and the Borgia Tower HAS got to be a "Roakes Hot Dog Trailer"!!! I know what'cher' thinking, I've snapped like a rubber band, maybe so, but my Brother took me here today.. He got the Hot Dog & I got the Roaker Burger... Throw in the retro fries that took me back to my youth and we WERE in Heaven. The stools we sat at with three other fellas made us look like Benedictine Monks at worship. I'm not sure who slapped me when I started Gregorian chanting, but I appreciate it.. One thing missing was a napkin/towel dispenser at each stool (and maybe a bathroom, go BEFORE you drive there) to keep up with the Coney Sauce.... WOW!! Nothing but older, "Seasoned" guys around that looked like they've been coming here for decades. Come'ta think of it, they ALL looked like ME as we sat in silence (except for an occasional grunt or moan) gobblin' away. Another MAJOR thing missing was stretcher bearers to litter me out to my car and deposit me, preferably, in the BACK seat!! Please, any true Catholics out there, forgive me if you feel I have blasphemed your Holiest Site. But face it, a Roakes Trailer would be a wecome sight at the Pearly Gates.. Or even the Gates to Hell for that matter.. I can feel you nodding out there! ONE of the things that stood out was that like "In-N-Out", Roakes toasts their buns. A true secret that hardly anyone ever notices but somehow that crunch really makes the burger special, not soggy (IF you eat it fast enough).. I will NEVER be in this neighborhood, hungry, and NOT stop in here!! 'Smatter of FACT, I will manipulate my day around the encounter... Thanks for the turn on Bro...

If waistline and cholesterol levels are of no concern to you, this is your place. I've been coming here since the '60's, it's been here since the early 1900's. It used to be you had your choice of two hot dogs, with sauce or without, chips and soft drinks, that was it. Roake bought it in the late '70's or early 80's and added the burgers, shakes, fries and all that. What remains and what is special is the sauce, ah yes the sauce. On a Hot dog it is special, on the burger it is heaven, on the fries with tomatoes and onions is, well, you'll just have to try it.

I have been going to Roakes since I was a little guy. Then in the eighties they had Roakes all over town. I had no reason to have to drive out this far for my long sausage. After they closed all but two my choice was to always go here to Jennings Lodge even with the drive being a bit long it was still a damn good dog. I have since found out that the other location is better so most times I make the drive out to see them. This location is ok but not as good as the Columbia Blvd location which seems to have better quality with what they put out. Sauce has changed not sure what they did but it's not quite the same.

The best Coney Dog & Fries in Portland, bar none!! Go there anytime I'm in Portland since the 70's. Don't have a Coney, fries and shake within six weeks of seeing your cardiologist, however.

I am 37 and have been eating at Roakes here and there since I was a kid. I have had hot dogs all over the U.S. and I have to say that Roakes is the best I've ever had. The sause is awesome along with the dog and bun too. The dining area is not very fancy and really small, but the food makes up for it.

My husband and I went to Roake's after reading many good reviews on the web. The service was so bad we will never be going back. My husband and I eat gluten free because we both get severely sick off of gluten. We have never had issues going places and just ordering a burger minus the bun. The women there heckled us for it and put us down. They very loudly laughed and made fun of us. We waited over 20 minutes for our food and people who came after us received their food before we did. Bad experience...not ever going back there again. Gluten intolerance and celiac disease is a real thing. Get educated! I thought living in Portland being different was accepted hence the slogan "Keep Portland weird". Ignorance may be bliss, but their ignorance was just plain rude and insulting. Bad customer service!

Sorry, it must be one of those things you need to grow up with. I tried it tonight, and was impressed by their set-up. exactly what you'd hope a burger/dog stand to be. small, old and greasy (not dirty). But I really wasn't impressed by the food. the fries were greasy, but not really crispy. They did seem fresh though. Overall, the fries were just OK. I got a full-size coney dog, and it was disappointing. the sauce was decent. Not my favorite, but not bad. The dog was pretty gross. I may sound like a hot-dog snob, but it pretty much tasted like bologna. I'd rather eat the cheap polish at Costco. I might try it again just because I'd like to give it a better rating, but for now, only 2 stars.

This gets four for what it is: hot dog shack done right. The coney sauce (similar to chili but no beans and a creamy cornmeal base) is greasy & cuminy the way it should be on a coney and it gets the white-bread bun chewy-licious as dictated by the Fast Food Gods millennia ago. Plus, the train-car-trailer style diner itself is a miracle of backyard genius that evokes my memories of bygone "expatriate East Coast" hot dog stands just like this in the San Fernando Valley, CA, circa 1978.... My God, I'm salivating as I write this, gotta go grab some NOW!

Great dogs and even better fries. Watch your step if you go inside (don't worry - you'll see what I mean)

This is the best bad food you will ever eat. Best meaning you'll lick the wrapper your dog was served in just to get the last bit of Coney sauce. Bad meaning you'll need to hook yourself to an AED while eating. The foot long with Coney sauce & onions is the best. Top it off with Coney fries and a cold coke and call it done. Who needs Dr Kervorkian? Roake's will help you make it to the after life with a smile on your face. Go there now.

I have been going here for years. And by years, I mean my mother was eating here when I was in utero. In fact, my mother has been eating at this establishment for nearly her entire life (she's over 70 and the reason I'm writing this review). I love that this small, local, family owned business has been around for so long, so it pains me to have to write this. They changed the recipe. I'm happy for all of you who have recently discovered this hidden gem, and am truly glad that it's one of your new favorites. Sadly, however, the change in the coney sauce recipe means that it is no longer one of my favorites. I'll forgive the fountain beverage switch and even the recent repeat occurrences of undercooked fries. I cannot forgive, however, the addition (or increase) of spices to the time tested coney sauce. Sorry, Roake's but we liked you the way you were.

Tried Roake's for the first time yesterday! LOVED it! Just and old fashioned hot dog & hamburger stand for take out only. Hot dogs were crisp and delicious and full of flavor! Loved sitting at the table outside!

I should have been a bit more embarrased when I ordered the "Plump Dog". I probably shouldnt have winked at the waitress and the old man in line behind me, but I just could not resist. Yesterday I went to Roake's to relive a little taste of childhood. The Roake's I used to enjoy as a kid was out on 174th and Stark. I remembered the burgers fondly and was very excited to have one, that was until the Plump jumped off the menu at me like it was in 3-D. The set up is dinky and teeny and looks like on good gust of wind could blow it over. Inside its very dark and cramped but the dudes pounding their coney dogs all seemed in a state of euphoria that reminded me of pictures of angels, and so the interior was instantly forgiven as I waited for my dog. The bun was crunchy and soft, no sweaty nasty wet bits and the kraut was authentic, tons of onions and mustard and most importantly the plumpdog was bumpin'. They obviously use good quality butcher shop style hot dogs and mine was so perfect Im already scheming ways to get back out there for another.

I grew up in the neighborhood just around the corner from Roake's. I've been stopping at this place off and on for the better part of 20 years, and I'm only 25. It's the best place to get a root beer shake and a coney island hot dog around town. I also really enjoy the burgers. Whether you want a small burger or you want a big honkin fatty burger, they'll be able to make it for you.

This place is small cramped and fantastic. Burgers and Dogs the way they should be made and served. Coney style is there specialty but they have a large list of choices. The building reminds me of a large trailer in size. For me a to go order and a trip to the park is a great way to enjoy this food with the kids.
