Don't, whatever you do, make the same mistake I did. Don't move to Sellwood and walk by Kay's a million times and write it off as The Neighborhood Bar I Will Eventually Get a Drink At Someday. It's better than that. Sure it looks like a dive bar. Because it is a dive bar. But it's a dive bar that's going to impress your finicky ass. The drinks, let's start there. Happy Hour is crazy accessible, especially on Mondays when you need it the most, and full of options. You want a beer? $3. You want a mixed drink? $3. You want it to be extra potent? No charge, included in the price of your beverage. That's how I like it. And that's how they do it. Because they're rad. I keep trying to tell you that. The food, let's go there next. The Governor is a wrap stuffed with chicken so juicy it should be wearing a velvet track suit. It's making friends with creamy avocado, lettuce, tomatoes, and some saucy garlic herb mayo. Ask them to hold the mayo. Get a side of the salsa roja instead; it's superior and you'll be glad you did. Throw down another dollar and get a side of their house made chips, like Doritos but better because they're delicious. If that sounds like not your thing, it's cool. Their HH menu is expansive and you have my personal guarantee that it will contain something you'll get excited about: salads, burritos, burgers, wraps, sammies, fries, soups, bowls, all that good time chow. If I haven't sold you already, let me twist your arm some by saying the service provided by the button-down shirt wearing waiter is top notch, above and beyond what anyone might expect during a warm weather lunch rush at a dive bar. Off the charts good, that's the truth.

It's a dive bar, and the food is pretty good. I'll be back. everyone loves a good dive bar. My fellow yelpers have spoken highly of this and for the most part they do not leave me astray. I was in the neighborhood and needed something to tide me over so I stopped in. I got the fries with mole and tinga chicken (it had some spanish name, but it's escaping me now.) It was really flavorful. The mole had lots of good spice and i could have used maybe a little more sweetness and a little less salt, but pretty darn good. It had mounds and mounds of chicken cooked in a flavorful sauce. The fries were actually pretty good too. Kind of a better version of those old style McMenimans fries that you shove in your face five or six and a time. My only complaint was the value. I would have preferred a little less for a smaller price. But then again maybe most people don't eat alone in a dive bar...or do they. If I'm in the neighborhood I would not hesitate to try some of their other faire.

The drinks are always good The food is even better (the nachos with blackened chicken and bacon takes me to heaven) The bartenders have always been friendly It's a good neighborhood bar where you're likely to strike up a conversation and have a good time.

Best staff in town. Amazing food! You have to try the Mac. Delicious drinks and reasonable prices. Been coming here for years and will continue to do so. I recommend it to all my friends!

My First time in there last night (April 16, 2015) and service was not great!!! There was about 10-12 of us there for two birthday celebration. The male bartender was good but the female waitress with short black hair was very, very, very rude and bitchy!!! I mostly sat at the bar (sober all night as I'm the DD) chatting with friends and people watching. This is what I experienced.....We were standing around in groups chatting, female waitress with her irritated voice "you either move to a side or keep a gap in between you guys so I can get by!" If it was a really really packed place, she would be maneuvering her way thru everyone to get where she needed to be. When she brought my food, no eye contact, no smile, no "can I get you anything else" or even a "you're welcome" after I said "thank you". The food was good. She ignored me when I was trying to get her attention for ranch and ketchup as she walked by. But she was very friendly to the locals next to me. As the night went by, she happens to walk by in the middle of a smart ass comment from one of my friend "I just downed half a bottle of fireball in the bathroom!" She said "get the fuck out, now I'm gonna have to clean that up in there!" Then she said something to the male bartender and next thing we got kicked out for joking around amongst ourselves. We didn't bring any liquor in to the bar, we ordered fireball shots and other alcohol drinks at the bar. My fiancé went to talk to her in a calm manner but she told him to "Fuck Off." There was no reasoning with them as to why we were getting kicked out, the male bartender could only say "we had other people bringing in alcohol, she has been here since 4pm (it was only 10:45pm, not even a full 8hrs shift she had and not a lot of customers), I am sorry." If she hadn't walked into a middle of a conversation amongst friends joking around and having fun, we would not have gotten kicked out. We weren't been obnoxious, picking fights or bringing outside alcohol!! I guess if you are not a local there, enter at your own risk. It's kinda sad not wanting to support local small bars when you have a horrible experience your first time there and/or going back with friends that live in that neighborhood. I hope that waitress changes her attitude, not a people person and/or if you don't like your work find something else. I work in a people pleasing service and that's not how I treat customers!!!!

This might be my new favorite dive bar. From the outside, it looks like the kind of place you might get knifed and bleed out on the floor with nobody noticing for looking at some guys girl wrong. Actually, it looks the same on the inside. It's great!

Update: After having come to Kay's many, many, times, as well as exploring the greater Portland area for quality drinking holes, I can conclude that Kay's is- by far- my favorite bar in the greater metro area. Excellent bartenders. Excellent food. Excellent prices. Excellent vibe. Simply the best. Please don't change.

My favorite neighborhood joint in sellwood. I live nearby and I'm ok with that. Good food, good drinks, exploitation beer signs from the 70's. It's everything I've ever wanted in a watering hole

The rebirth of an institution. Dont know how many people remember the best Prime Rib in the city but Kay's was famous for it. Well when they changed ownership the first time. It was a fast down hill slide. No I dont want something just as good, which was not any where near as good, as the Prime Rib. I want the Prime Rib. Fast forward to now. The Dive Bar booths and smoke filled corners are gone. I assume the new owners are upgrading and keeping some of the nostalgia as the signs and memories have all been rearranged. I have to agree with some others I have passed by here so many times thinking that place just isnt the same. Well for me it isnt. It is a better version of what I remember. They feature Sessions Beer. Better than just being the hipster what flavor of the month beer time is it. Good old fashioned good tasting Sessions. Which won beer of the year according to the New York Times so argue with them. Great Happy Hour specials. Wednesday is Burger Day will definitely replace Taco Tuesday. A burger with fries and a beer $6.00?? who doesnt love that? It was even hard to find a place to sit. Maybe the word is already out. All the food coming out of the back looked good and seemed to keep coming a sure sign something good is being cooked up. I dont know how often I walked on by but now I will be walking on in. This place is shaping up to be the hot corner it once was. I liked all the offerings on the happy hour menu and we had great service. Maybe they met after all the reviews and corrected the situation others have mentioned. We could not think of wanting something before a waitress was there to ask us if everything was okay or if we needed anything. I suggest you make this place one of your regular stops. Other bars in the area take notice Kay's is back on the rise. I dont see any way of handling larger crowds but maybe that is a good thing. You can walk in see if anything is available and walk out. Stop on in and give something old a new try. You will be surprised in a good way.

Cool dive bar with decent real food. Not as great as some of the other reviews made it out to be, but worth checking out. I saw some great drinks being made and lots of food. My burger and salad were just ok.

I had drunk here before, but this is the first time reviewing it for the food. I happened to see an article on best burgers in PDX, and Kay's was named. 12 years of owning a home in PDX, and what?!??!? I have to read a millenial exclaim after reading the article on the FB, "see Kay's has the best burger?" That being said, it is a millenial hipster hangout, darkly lit with old millwaukee and Shlitz signs lit up and dark wood paneling from the 70's. Happy hour was until 6 pm although on my way out of the rest room on Mondays it goes until 8 pm. OMG - I will start with the burger, hand-pressed and a third of a pound. I asked for it cooked medium rare, and it was cooked perfectly. It was topped with both tomatoes, fresh lettuce and onions for $4 on Happy Hour. But the highlight to me was the poutine! It is way better, saltier and tastier than Potato Champion, but better than that it was better than the Poutine I had in Ottawa, the capitol of all of Canada two years ago. It was also on happy hour for $7. Oh and pints are $3 on the happy hour. Nuff said!

Came here for happy hour. I was super excited considering how many people on yelp seemed to like it. I kept it in my bookmarked list for months until I finally got a chance to try it. Prices were cheap, especially for happy hour. However, the basket of fries weren't crispy as I expected. They were kinda soggy and limp. I'm not sure if it is meant to be that way, or whether it just sat out too long before the waiter delivered it to our table. They were a little bland, which is fine with me. I don't mind bland flavors as long as I have a good sauce to go with it. But the blue cheese sauce was very runny and not very flavorful either. I decided to mix ketchup and hot sauce (which is my sauce of choice for french fries), but the hot sauce they had weren't even spicy. It would have been great if they had some Sriracha or something. The portion was pretty large. I had a bite of their burger which is also pretty okay........On the bright side the service was good. The server had really good hair and nice glasses.

Ordered just a regular burger, and it was delish. The Kay's Bowl with pulled pork, a little spicy, but it was good as well. Highly recommended.

Total honesty - they sponsor my derby league. That said, I love, love, love it here because it's friendly, they have great drinks and the food is fantastic. All those things were not the case before Patrick bought it - so yes, this is a legit review. The house salad with blackened chicken (and some booze) made my day Monday!

One of my favorite places in PDX! I'm here most Tuesday's for the 6 dollar vegan tacos/beer special! Wait staff is friendly and the food is excellent. Very fresh ingredients. It's nice having a bar with so many vegan options!!

Excellent food and drinks. The service was great. I had the wet burrito, which was amazing. The mole on that was as good as it gets. My wife had the burger, which she enjoyed a lot. The fries were perfectly seasoned. We'll definitely be going back!

Obsessed with this bar. I'm in town staying with my sister for a couple of months and this is my favorite place so far. Walking distance, which already places it high on my list. Amazing and friendly bartenders and surprisingly delicious bar food. I mean very very surprisingly delicious. Excellent happy hour and just an overall comfortable place.

Whenever I'm hanging out in Sellwood, I end up at this bar. Poutine for $7 at happy hour! And it's tasty! I've also had a yummmmmm burrito here. I'm impressed with their food. A cut above typical fried bar food. I also like the drinks. The specials change regularly. I will say that they get kind of busy during weekends and happy hours. Snag yourself a seat if you can. There's even some outside seating on those sunny days. Lovely for people watching or smoking if that's your thing. Make sure and stop by the many vintage shops surrounding it for a fun-filled day. Overall, Kay's is a good place to meet up with friends over cocktails, beers and snacks.

I'm a big fan of this bar. I love the staff. I love the ambiance. I love the nachos (the ones with the chips sprinkled with magic dust). I love their drinks (they always have fun, delicious specialty drinks). I love the outdoor seating. I love this bar.

My friend brought me here when we were out in Sellwood (which I rarely am) and her excitement to bring me to her "favorite bar in Sellwood" got me really stoked to try this place We came in late on a Wednesday and I immediately loved the dark, sort of "biker bar" feel - we got a corner booth and our waitress was very quick to take our beer orders. Any bar that has Elysian Pumpkin beer on draft is already a winner in my book. The portions are HUGE and total bar/comfort food. I got a burger (which was surprisingly really damn delicious) and a huge mound of shoestring fries. My friend ordered a ginormous wrap and we also had some of the french fry nachos which - if you go - you basically need to order because they are RIDICULOUS. This would be a great place to get some food after a night of drinking or to hang out and watch a game! Loved it.

Worst service of my life. I know, no one really cares about service related reviews but my god. The girl behind the bar is the worst bar tender I have ever had. Good luck. I wrote "get a new job" on the 0 tip tab. I hope she takes it to heart.

I have to really love a place or hate a place to write a yelp review. Eye. Love. Kay's. I planned ahead with them letting them know we'd be bringing 10ish people for my birthday, and they made us custom breakfast! It was amazing! No guarantees they'll do it for you, but it's the kind of place that will always try to make you happy. Amazing food and great IPA selection. Just please don't tell anyone. Their service is also top-notch. I feel like I shouldn't give them a good review so it doesn't get crowded like those "other" places. Love, Eric

An open love letter to Kay's: Dear Kay's -- October 25th went down something like this: about 4:45 on a stormy afternoon, our power goes out in Milwaukie. No big deal. It's Saturday night. I figure I'll light some candles, poor some wine, and plan on cereal for dinner. The evening progresses romantically enough until the spouse and I get sick enough of each other's profiles in shadow puppets to devise another plan. Off we go to Kay's for a promised fabulous burger. The Kay's burger did not disappoint. Neither did the chicken wrap whose name I promptly forgot in the throes of budget well drinks. Kudos to two separate servers who actually brought extra lime with my G&T when requested. Yummy food all the way around. Delicious shoe string fries. Two full tummies + 3 drinks for $30? You betcha. Thank you for making my evening complete. Here's to more power outages.

This place is a favorite of mine. Easy, non-hipster atmosphere. I effing love it. Great for beers, cocktails, and to watch the game. BUT THE FOOD is what keeps me coming back. Try the Motor City Nachos. No don't; more for me. Try the poutine (also excellent). Also, they have a pretty great bar. Which i like to sit at.

Kays is my favorite night time destination. It's walking distance from my house which comes in handy. The lavender lemonade is to die for. I do miss the blue baby mac and cheese but the staff will fix it up for me when I come. The staff is always so friendly and quick.

Absolutely delicious food in a sparklingly clean historic bar where regulars mingle, enjoying drinks. We went here when we had that snow storm, and it was incredibly cozy! I loved my burrito with mole sauce (homemade) that was just incredible! My partner had their Motor City Nachos, which are actually fries and truly decadent in that way that makes you happy when you've had too much to drink. Good to have at a bar! Though neither of us got an alcoholic beverage (ironically), if their drinks are as good as their food, I can only imagine how good they are! We'll be back!

This was the very first place that we ate when we came to Portland. The ONLY reason we picked this place was because of all the great reviews on Yelp since it's in an area where there are so many places to choose. We sat ourselves at a booth and we were greeted right away. Our waitress was awesome and I wish that I remembered her name. We barely squeaked in at Happy Hour and she hurried up and got our orders in on time. I ordered this drink called the Paper Airplane Pilot which I can't recommend enough....yum! We started off with the Pulled Pork Nachos and I will tell you that these are some of the best nachos THAT I'VE EVER HAD....and I've had a lot!!! We should have stopped there but those were so good that we had to keep going....lol. Next we ordered a mushroom swiss burger, a Miles Mac (which was sooo rich and amazing that I could only eat a couple bites) and some hot wings. The fries are skinny, crispy and very tasty. To add to all of this fantastic food....they just so happened to be playing a Cards game on the TV where the Cards beat the Dodgers 10 - 9.....WIN, WIN! If you are looking for a great place to stop and grab some fabulous food....check this place out!!! I hear they serve brunch as well....hmmmmm.....we may have to go back before we head back to St. Louis!

Lick a potato, not a tomato! If there's potatoes in it, it's got veggies, right??? Love this place, the perfect dive bar and a great antidote to some of the Sellwood yuppies. Met a friend here for happy hour and had a great time. The drinks were good, but the food--wowza! I had the Motor City nachos, which are like fries topped with cheese, pulled pork, slaw and more! So delicious! My friend had the fries topped with poutine. Hers was tasty, but mine was even better! The portions are humongous, we both love food and could only eat about a third of our orders, took the rest home in boxes. The bartender/server was super, super friendly and terrific. She made us feel very welcome and at home. Here's to lovely fried potatoes and booze!

Avoid at all costs? Let's see... I ordered the blackened burger option with grilled chicken and fries. Friends had the Kay's burgers and fries. Kitchen service is pretty slow for what is served.. The blackening seasoning was sooooo super salty. It overpowered everything. The fries were good with rosemary flavor, but also very very salty! Some unfinished plates for sure. The veggie burger subbed for one of the Kay's burgers was apparently pretty tasty, albeit it was deep fried. It tasted homemade. Service was really bad. Absentminded even? The waitress was not busy with other customers, just not present. I wouldn't go back ever. Skip to next gastro pub Portlander's!

This review is specifically for the brunch offered at Kay's. -Awesome bartender who is quick and to the point. He respects your space and doesn't make silence awkward if you don't feel like chatting. At 10am when you come in for brunch you may be the only one in the place but you won't feel uncomfortable. He gets that you are there to refuel and soothe the hangover. -Nice 70s Motown/soul soundtrack playing in the morning. -The offerings are on point! Large servings of very delicious, no frills grub. The food rivals the best brunch spots in Pdx but without the wait or annoying crowd if you get there when they open at 10.

This place is the best watering hole if you are looking for somewhere to get a drink in Sellwood. The Happy Hour is unbeatable, especially because the food is actually pretty decent! I highly recommend the veggie burger- their buns are on point. They have a lovely special for burger, fries, and a beer for like $6 for happy hour- truly can't be beat! Plus, the service here is excellent and all of the servers are super nice and helpful. wish I lived closer to it and I would be a regular just like former Governor Barb Roberts! ... If only I could get my face on the giant mural here... If there was one area for improvement I would wish for more seating as it gets pretty crowded around happy hour. Lastly, they get an extra star for best beer signs.

We went to Kay's to watch the Superbowl, which was a blast, and since I knew that it would be a long game I decided to go with one of their lightest beer options. I also had the wet burrito which was delicious. The reason I feel compelled to only give this bar 2 stars is that toward the end of the game they switched bar tenders from the super friendly girl who had been helping us all game to another lady with curly hair and a steelers shirt on who promptly told me I had to switch to water because I had had 3 session pale ales in 1 1/2 hours!!! Wow, I understand the bar tender's responsibility to not serve people who are obviously intoxicated but this went above and beyond that. So we went to Cosmo Lounge and played pool and had a blast! I will definitely go back to Kay's but will immediately leave if she is the bartender, no matter what.

Great spot. Good food, decent cocktails and great prices. I just moved to sellwood and though it's a little bit of a walk, I can see myself returning many times.
