This place gets one star and one star alone, the owners are very rude and pressure you to leave because,"they need to close their register". 1. I am a paying customer 2. Their ice cream machine wasn't working right so that took 5 min of our time that we would of been gone and paid for. 3. The poor assistant manager had to go to all the tables and take the brunt of the owners cowardice. 4. We spent a grand total of maybe 1 hour at the restaurant, I would understand 2 hours or 4 hours but 1 hour and people were coming in and just starting in line. 5. If you want someone to badger you to pay, then you will LOVE this place!

Normally, if you had a bad dish at a Mongolian BBQ place, it's your own fault. Not the two times I've went here. I know, you are thinking "How is that possible?" Read on, dear reader, and be amazed. The first time, they burnt my dish. Yes, they actually burnt it; and I'm not talking like a little crispy, I'm talking it being blacker then the Type O Negative song "Black Number One". The second time I went here, I guess someone figured they shouldn't burn it. Instead, they poured water all over my food -- right after putting it on. I had to stand there and watch helplessly as my carefully chosen oils and sauces were washed away in a flood.

The food and selection is great, as I've come to expect at any Chang's location... BUT don't try to merge at the grill. This is the only one I've been to where you don't use both sides (they're both stocked and ready for use). After waiting in line like everyone else, and the 6 people in front of me merging in (as seemed normal and no one made a peep) my daughters and I went to follow suit and the hostess came over, singled us out and told us we had to go around to the back of the line. I explained that we had been in line just as long as the people on the other side, and it was a misunderstanding and we would gladly go up the other side next time, but we were going to wait where we were. She was extremely snotty, and even went and talked to our server while openly pointing and glaring at us. We received the 'stink-eye' as she turned to glare at us with every free moment she had from the hostess desk... She even shook her head at us in our way out the door while mumbling to herself. Our server was nice, food was ok, hostess was awful... Won't be back.

Despite the warnings of Channel 12 news, I went. Yes, for one the news was correct, the inability of the staff to follow even the simplest of food handling procedures was clear. I watched as the "cook" took beef, and then with out as much as wiping the pan, cooked pork , and then moved on to chicken. Total gross out for me. I will not subject myself to the food borne illness outbreak this place is destined to have.

Happened to drop in for lunch while we were waiting on our truck being serviced at Courtesy Ford nearby. We were quite surprised that we were allowed to take more than one bowl and choose the amount of meat we wanted as well as going back for seconds if we desired. We were happy to discover that our meal included soup, rice, wraps, and even Carmel or Chocolate covered soft serve ice cream. The food was very good and the service friendly and efficient. We agreed that we will make this our go to place for lunch when in the area.

I really enjoy this place. You get to pick out your food. Watch them cook it on the grill. I like the atmosphere. Lunch is probably better than dinner. Sometimes the dinner rush has a line and you have to wait a little. Been to this place multiple times.

My favorite type of dining is mongolian BBQ. I've been to a number of different restaurants and Chang's seemed like a find based on the reviews. Chang's was clean and the bar was attended. The food was good quality. However, the choices were very basic and lacked creativity. The beef was very thin, and it took two bowls to fill a plate because the large cut was taking up a lot of space. The suces choices were the basic flavors (soy, ginger, garlic, hot oil, seasame oil, vinegar, salt water, sherry and sugar water). there was no house sauce, and no chili sauce which is the pride of most Mongolian BBQ's. The rice paper was inedible and the rice was cold and sticky. Overall, the flavor was on dimensional but the cooks were good and made it work. I was not impressed.

Kind of expensive for dinner, only difference with dinner and lunch is dinner has crappy shrimp that are tiny and flavorless and crappy salmon and squid ( have not tried the squid yet). Lunch is an ok price for 9 dollars. I would only suggest going for the lunch. They do serve ice cream at the end of each dinner and you can have free rice, rice paper and soup with the meal(egg flour and hot and sour).

Oh goodness, I love this place. It could have something to do with me being a good cook, so I combine the perfect ingredients and mix my sauce up like a pro. A mouthwatering, sweet/spicy mixture of heaven on a plate. Anytime someone tells me they don't like Chang's, I tell them, "if it tastes bad, you're doing something wrong!" You pick the ingredients, you mix the sauce! If you don't do it right, follow one of their sauces, then add a little of things you like. Don't go crazy, or that's how your food will end up. Chang's is a guilty pleasure, because it is a bit expensive for not having leftovers. I'm lucky if I can eat a second plate, or maybe not so lucky if you measure by waistline standards, so I wish they'd do a single plate price. It does come with soup and ice cream though. And the selection of additions is amazing. Salmon, all kinds of meat, good looking shrimps, delicious paper thin meat that soaks up the sauce as it sizzles on the grill, right in front of your eyes! This is my favorite buffet, nice atmosphere for a buffet place, clean, wait staff is always right on refills, checking on us, etc. And it tastes delicious. If you don't like Changs, bring me, I'll make your plate for you, you buy my dinner! =)

The ingredients are really fresh, The sauces, not really. They too watered down. Anyone who's been to a real Mongolian grill outside the USA would understand but I guess it will do considering it's an Americanized Mongolian grill. The place looks old but it's clean. The service was very good, so good that we left a 30% tip.

Drove 20 mins to try this place with a take-out order (since many have commented on poor service). Would not make a take-out meal?! Really?

    (1)
  • Angela D.

We have been coming here over the years, but we will not be returning. The service was non exsistant, and the cooks were only cooking 3 orders at a time. The cook line took 30 minutes to get thru. And they watered down your food! I'll drive out to Gresham from now on.

Inconsistency in flavor due to the fact that the "chefs" we're not stirring the noodles in with the veggies, meat and sauce.

If restaurants were required to display a picture of the restroom instead of a health code rating/certificate of passing inspection, this place would be shut down in a week. I nearly lost my appetite upon visiting the restroom and seeing the horrors within. After running across the street to Panda Express to make use of their facilities, I had two plates of meat and noodles which was worth the bike ride there. Would visit again so long as I don't have to go to their bathroom. Seriously it was like the 4th ring of hell in there.

This is a great place! Its great for groups, casual date nights, older couples, whoever! It's a buffet style place, with an all you can eat setup. They do a good job of keeping the counter clean and the food bins full. Love the place! They do close for a few hours during the day so be mindful of that. You also get wraps, rice and ice cream with your dinner which is great.

Although not the best restaurant in the world, it does serve up some really good stuff by way of their self serve stomach stuffing, hunger stifling, astoundingly delish assortment of meats, veggies and seasonings - making your way to the circular familial grill where the cook puts whatever your concoction is together! If you leave hungry, you have a serious problem. This is a great place to go with a crowd, whether friends and/or family. Kind of 'Mongolia meets Middle Ages' atmosphere with the volume and communal ambience. Although a chaotic start, it is worth it once you start digging in to the prepared dish! Genghis Khan never had it so good! Be ready for a wait line at the buffet if going during their busy time... but be patient, you'll enjoy the meal! Bon appétit!

I defy most normal people to break the 3 plate barrier at this place!!! I have chomped down two beast sized plates at this place, but never cracked into a third. The smart move is to take two bowls with you through the line (one for meats, one for veg) and don't follow the silly little seasoning chart at the end, just put on enough salt to flavor it, a little oyster sauce, garlic and skip the hot oil, it doesn't do anything but grease it out and adds no heat. Just use the siracchia at the table. People are nice who work there if not just a little too business oriented (get ya in, and get ya out style) and the price is pretty decent for how much you could potentially eat. Stay away from this place on the weekends though (i think its saturday) because its like russian church day around that area on saturdays and they flock to this place in huge numbers (they get a little noisy and immature for my taste).

Hell yah! Well i guess im a little excited but this is my type of place! Go once through, go twice, go thrice! Good food and made exactly the way you want it. They have crazy hours though but at an all u can eat place im sure they like to kick people out after a while for lunch to make sure they do not just camp out all day. Makes sense.

My favorite buffet! Stay away during.peak hours though. You'll be in line forever. When it gets really busy, the line.is .enough to make you want to leave in an anxiety ridden freakout.. Grill and buffet are too close together. Building needs a remodel, cleaned up some. Unique and delicious!

I would have a 5/5 but the past couple visits have made me not want to come back. Don't get me wrong, the food is excellent! The chefs are very quick to get your food out and the customization is unlike anything I've seen. It comes down to the staff. For some reason it seems like the lunch servers are very nice and friendly but night servers are unpleasant. At least, that's what I've experienced.

This is the best Changs in the whole Washington-Oregon area. You pick your sauces, and something about this location that the other ones can't seem to get.... The cooks seriously know what they're doing. They use the sauces you pick to cook the meat and veggies in (unlike other places who just dump it all together and drown it in water). The food comes out perfectly always, and the ONE time it didnt, the owner comped my meal and apologized. They really care about their place and customers and it shows.

MONGOLIAN FOOD IS MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE!! Ever since I was a kid. I went to the Changs in Lancaster, and even another type of Mongolian Grill on Commercial St. in Salem. The Changs here, was good....because you cook the food yourself pretty much, but I found their service and culinary skills lacking in comparison to other Mongolians. It took the waitresses FOREVER to bring water, rice....and it was only me and two other people throughout the entire restaurant. Also, it's natural when you're cooking on the grill to get mixed food every now and then, but it was absolutely ridiculous at this Changs. I felt like I was missing half of my order. This happened more than once, with different grillers. I'd still eat here, although I'll probably go when there is less people. It's definitely popular. One time there was a thirty minute wait. Like always, I'd recommend going during dinner, it's sooo much cheaper.

I really enjoy Chang's Mongolian Grill.... The selection that they have is wide enough to have pretty much anything you want, and to change things up regularly if you like to. Also, it is a great value... you have to make sure you check the hours though, as they close down between lunch and dinner...

I remember when my first Chang's experience was. It was in 1995 and it just happened to be at this specific location. I've always enjoyed my food and if I didn't, it was my own fault because I'm the one who made it. This time around was a different experience and it was all due to the cooks. There has always been a system where, especially when busy, the cooks are cooking, serving and putting the next person's bowls of food onto the grill after scraping off the residual food from the previous patron. It's a flawless system and gets a long line moving through nicely. It's a constant process that does not stop if there is a line. I spent 25 minutes in line waiting not once but TWICE. The cooks would put on 6 people's food, cook it and once there were maybe two left cooking, one of the cooks would disappear for some reason and then when the grill was empty, the cook would clean it off and the other would eventually come back and wipe it down. When there are 30 people in line waiting, the result was 25 minutes of standing and waiting. Very disappointing. If these two cooks are regulars, my hope is management would retrain them to move it along a little quicker. I saw others complaining to the servers. So I know I was not the only one frustrated by the process. Service at the tables was very attentive and quick. I'll go back but probably wait until after the 8:00 hour to do so so that I won't have to wait so long. Again, I love going there. I love what I am able to create and enjoy. Tonight was just a little needlessly frustrating.

Go here all the time. I don't usually do buffets but they cook the food after you pick it out. Sometimes you get a few pieces of other peoples food mixed in with yours but its always good. The waiters don't pay to much attention to you see I usually ask for a second glass of my drink that way I have a drink for my whole meal

    (4)
  • Eirene N.

Too expensive for the quality. I think they cut their vegetables with a hammer. The better Mongolian grill has a hot food bar, soda fountain and sometimes fried rice and warm desserts. You won't find these niceties at this grill. Service was efficient.

    (2)
  • Tessa E.

Uh wait staff kinda sucks but then all they do is seat you and get drinks mostly. Awesome hungover place, make your own stuff and mind your own shit... Downside, .... When the children come. Other then that, blue caller friendly.

Being pregnant, all food sounds amazing. I was in this area of town and got a whiff of this place and HAD to eat it today! The pros: I loved all the veggie options. So many fresh veggies! Most were fresh! The meat looked mostly fresh out of the freezer except maybe the fish and the lamb. They have really great tofu that grills perfectly Tasty DIY sauces to add to your stir fry or some straight up kikkoman teriyaki sauce or hoisin sauce for those who do not want to DIY it The cons: Some ingredients could have been fresher-- cilantro looked a bit puny and old. Fish looked like it wasn't super fresh... You have to stand in line too long each time you want a plate of food (we went lunch rush on a Sunday). Stood in line probably 20-25 minutes twice. A lot of patrons seemed like regulars and knew how to "cheat" by making four bowls at a time (which would make two big plates worth.) these patrons were also pretty unpleasant and kept policing the line of folks waiting for their food to get cooked. It was kind of annoying....and weird The ingredient bar was a mess. Tongs in the wrong place, spilled ingredients everywhere, sticky sauce messes. I saw staff cleaning it up with witty regularly but when people are hungry and in a rush to try and get in the cooking line, common courtesy to keep the are clean apparently goes out the window! The soup is bad and kind of a waste when the main food is what you're paying for. Also the pancakes/wraps they gave us were too crunchy (maybe stale?) and didn't seem right- didn't really want them anyway. If you're a vegetarian who cares about shared cooking space on the grill, don't come here. Lots of contamination of meat all over the grill. My husbands vegetarian and is ok with shared cooking spaces, but I know many other vegetarians are not ok with it. Overall, it's pretty tasty but I think I prefer Wok Shop on 82nd for a good stir fry that costs a bit less and no annoying lines or greedy/bossy restaurant-goers.

I prefer the one in Tigard because it's closer to my house and has a larger selection of food. But I learned something new and very important today! China is in SE Portland! When I grew up in SE Portland, I don't remember China being there, but apparently it's there now. My favorite server disappeared from the Tigard Chang's last year, so I asked what happened to her. They told me she moved to China. Sad sauce, but happy for her if that's what she wanted! So tonight I happen to be on the East side and stop for dinner at Changs, and guess who's there? My favorite server! The one who moved to China, (or so they said.) I was actually a little disappointed in the selection at first. No broccoli? But usually I end up eating too much and can't have ice cream, so this time it worked out great.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY! This place is filthy dirty. Service is disinterested and lackluster. Veggie selection is limp and without variety. Sauces are less than galf the choices of any reasonable Mongolian grill. Fish selection is nonexistent. Cooks seem bothered if not downright rude. We eat less tgan half our food paid the $30.00 and left feeling cheated.

Always helpful and nice staff, the food is always cooked to perfection! I love it!!!! My husband always asks to go, I think its because he likes that they have shrip, salmon and lamb. This place is always a good choice! Little spendy, but worth it!

Why do I love Chang's Mongolian Grill so much? At first glance it seems like a poor-man's Benihana, but once you make it through the line of veggies and meat, add your noodles and your own special sauce, you can come out with some of the most delicious food in the city. The restaraunt gives you it's recommended sauce guides (in Mild, Medium, and Hot) if you haven't figured out your own mix yet. I have probably been to Chang's close to 100 times over the last 10 years or so and always look forward to it whenever possible.

I took the boys here for my b day. Having no clue how it worked 2 teenagers told me use lots of spicy oil and garlic. Surprisingly it was perfect. The best sauce they came up with was simply doubling the "suggested" ingrediates on the board. It would be 5 stars but the chicken was freezed perhaps too fast and tasted a bit rubbery.

You know...I've been to many Mongolian BBQ (or in this case, Grill) restaurants. This has to be the cleanest that I've been to in my whole life. We went to the PDX Zoo yesterday and after a long day of tromping around in the rain trying to get a view of all of the animals trying to stay out of the rain, we were famished. We being Terresa, Ashlyne, Christian, and Cameron. While walking around in the zoo, we smelled a hint of Chinese food wafting into the premises. At that point, we decided that after our sojourn through the wilds, we'd go get some Chinese buffet. After finishing our day and sitting in the car digging through our Entertainment book, we decided that Mongolian sounded better. We were too hungry/tired to wait until we got back to Salem so we decided to go to this place kinda out of the way for us. We got there right at five, when they opened. This place was clean. We were prolly the second group in so obviously it wasn't dirty from having a restaurant full of families, but you could tell that they kept this place clean. The food was also great. They had items that you don't normally see in a Mongolian BBQ joint. Items such as shrimp, salmon, peanuts...and a few other items. All of the food areas were kept stocked and cleaned. I went through the line three times and was pleased with the cleanliness of the countertops and food bowls. And they also kept the grill area nice and clean. The servers were efficient and attentive. They came by quite a few times to refill our drinks and check on us. I plan on going by Chang's in Salem soon to see if it's a standard that they keep in all of their restaurants or if it was a fluke and that's the only clean one. But I'm truly happy with my experience with this place and will definitely be back for more on future trips into PDX. I recommend this place highly if you're in the mood for this kind of food. But beware that the lines in this place can be long. That's the only setback that I found, but will not mark it as negative here. I attribute that to the good food and service.

Stopped in to have a quick dinner with my daughter. I noticed they didn't have all the vegetables out that they normally do. I was disappointed. I've never had dinner at a Chang's before, normally it's just lunch. I guess I will keep going at lunch time and skip the dinner.

This is my go-to buffet. Well, this or Sweet Tomatoes. I think I fill up a bowl with meats and another with noodles and veggies in my sleep sometimes. I never pay attention to the "sauce" instructions......if I want four ladles of lime juice on my meat, I WILL HAVE IT! I love to throw on a few hot oils and ginger to really give it a kick. Warning....you will want to eat five plates worth of food here. I did it once, and had trouble walking afterward. Something is in the food.....something more powerful than MSG.

I love this place. It took a few tries to get the flavor right... it's pricey during dinner Bc you get imitation crab and snow cod.. Also your price includes soup wraps rice and ice cream.. avoid Sunday afternoons.. huge church groups. Great service fast paced love this place.

Yeay, I moved a block away from this Chang's. I've been to Mongolian grills in other cities, and just found out this was in Portland too. I love this idea!! I love picking the sauces, meats and vegetables and having them fried up right there while you wait. It is so much nicer than a regular buffet where you are stuck with the dishes they create. So often I see seafood prepared the way I want my chicken done, and chicken the way I eat my steak.. The buffet had chicken, lamb, beef, turkey, tofu, and shrimp.. and more. A variety of chinese vegetables, and then there are the sauces. I can't keep up with all these sauces at home.. it is great to change things up a bit and have the same ingredients with a change to the sauces, it is a whole different dish. Watch for salt content. My first run through was very salty, changed up and second time, it was much better. This is awesome for groups of people carnivorous and vegetarian. All you can eat.. fresh, and close to home. I'll definitely be back!

A healthy stir fry buffet It's hard to beat a good stir fry, unless of course you build it yourself with as many goodies as you like. That's why I love going to Chang's Mongolian Grill. This is the place that I go when I'm back to healthy eating but miss going out. I can get filled up on lots of healthy veggies and chicken without feeling like I'm going to break the scales when I go home. For those of you who haven't been there, it's an all-you-can eat buffet of veggies, meat, seafood, pasta and several sauces. You go through and put as much of these things in a bowl as you'd like and then watch it being cooked. I love the sauces the most, especially the fresh ginger, garlic and vinegar. I'd recommend both the chicken and the steak. The seafood tasted a bit fishy to me. Tip: Choose the hot and sour soup as your first course. Their egg flower tastes a bit bland.

Dude. TV advertising works. The husband and I were sitting around, trying to decide what to do for dinner, then lo and behold, a commercial for Chang's Mongolian Grill comes on. I was laughing at first, the cooks throwing around bowls, making it look all crazy, but it actually sounded good. I hadn't had Mongolian grill in years. We got there shortly after they opened, everything looked really fresh and plentiful, service was also good. On our second trip up (don't judge me), it was way more packed, and had quite a wait. It definitely bring in the white trash and their packs of kids. I sure did see some odd combination's of toppings. Will definitely hit it up again!

Nice ambiance. There is a soup and ice cream with the meal. The place is extremely crowded. I wonder how the 2 chefs manage to get a breath of air cooking for number of customers who turn up. Amazing. There is a good variety of meats (beef, chicken, pork, turkey) and fishes(shrimp, white cod, etc). This is really a selling point for the place. The sauces are ok. But they stick to food after taken from the grill and give the necessary taste. However, not as yummy as the grills in Seattle. A set of wraps are given to us to create dumplings with the grilled food. Very interesting. Certainly not pricey considering the location and the nice ambiance. The staff is quite friendly.

I have never been here during the week because of how late they open. I have always gone on a Saturday when the open and it gets full really fast. Normally I can only get one plate of food because of how long the line to get your food cooked becomes. This time I was able to go through twice and boy was I full when I was done. I went on a Monday night at 5pm and there was maybe a quarter of the business I normally see on the weekends. The food is still delicious and you can create some really unique flavors with the different sauces they provide. I definitely suggest checking them out on a weeknight for a little bit less crowd activity.

Great service, better than any other time I have been there. Our drinks stayed full, we had enough wraps and rice. I did find it kind of gross that the guys cooking the food were dripping in sweat...what if some got in the food, but if I were cooking over a huge hot plate then I would probably be sweating too.

i've eaten at the chang's in gresham many times (and loved it) ... the experience at this location however was terrible. we got there around 2:10 giving us time to eat and be gone by 3 which is when they close the lunch service. they seated a table of 10+ at 2:40, then 5+ at 2:45, then another person a moment later... our "server" was obviously mad (even though he's the one who seated them) because he never bothered to refill our water, ever and when we asked for more wrappers he said we needed to hurry because they were closing soon when we got done (at 3:05) he was gone, outside on his cell phone, and none of the employees left (management, other servers, etc.) bothered to bring us ice cream, so we just left... they did however come to each table to ask us to pay so they could close out the register my dining companion had worked as a waiter in college and said it's common for people to come in close to closing so we were both shocked chang's on 122nd's policy must be to provide horrible service to customers who are still eating at closing to get them out the door ... they should clearly post the expectations so diners are aware upon entry - or just close earlier!! ps: if you don't care about service the food isn't bad

I miss the cute lil blonde girl that use to work there. I believe her name is Tara? She was so incredibly sweet and gave amazing customer service. But other than that, the food is delicious! They need to change the ingredients in the egg flower though, tasted pretty bland.

Wanted to like this place more. Meals come with soup, wraps, rice, and ice cream! Soup- egg flower- looked good, was sweet- shouldn't be sweet...ever Meat wasn't all frozen Good selection of meats and vegetables. Sauces- disappointing for those with me that there wasn't a house sauce or pre made sauce. At the grill- why why why why hose all the sauces off with water? The good places don't do it that way!

Personalized all-you-can-eat food and entertainment in one experience, that is what a Mongolian Grill is all about. It had been some time since our last visit to this style of restaurant. Dinner, at $15 seems several dollars more expensive than our last visit. Soup can be brought to the table if you want, or you can just head for the main coarse. There was a great section of meats including lamb, salmon, small shrimp and calamari as well as noddles and vegetable. Your choice of sauces are at the end. If you don't have a clue or two about what to use, just look up at the suggestion board. Timing is a bit of an art here, meaning that you might fill a bowl or two with your meats and veggies, and then have to line up against the wall as you progress towards the grill. The entertainment happens when you reach the counter and watch the food being cooked on a large semi-domed, very hot grill. Rice, beverages and wraps are available back at your table from the wait staff who we found to be friendly and helpful.
