While touring the Oregon Coast, my fiancée Santi T was very thoughtful to bring me to Newport for a cioppino feast. Initially, we stopped by another restaurant up the street only to learn that it was closed for renovation. We took some pictures in the area, and eventually wandered into this seafood restaurant for dinner. Upon entering, interested diners will notice the divvy interior. The moderate lighting was underscored by an eclectic collection of artifacts from the ocean. The all around blue walls encompassed a bar area that also served as the walkway in-between the dining areas in the front and back of this little shack. Steamed oyster Appetizer ($11.95) came with 8 Northwest oysters, fruit garnishes, lemon, and cocktail sauce. The oysters were fresh, nicely steamed, and served with fresh garlic. The cocktail sauce wasn't necessary, but the squeeze of lemon made it a nice opener. Shark's Cioppino ($14.95) was a heaping bowl of Cioppino, served piping hot. The red cioppino sauce was filled with dungeness crab, shrimp, prawns, and fish to the brim. The cioppino sauce was made with wine, celery, bell peppers, garlic, tomatoes, and spices to deepen the flavors. The mix of seafood was plentiful, fresh, and delicious with every spoon. At first we thought we weren't going to have enough and wanted to order the Superbowl (20.95). Our serving turned out perfect for two. Shark's Curry ($14.95) was served with lemongrass curry, coconut milk, crab, pink shrimp, clams, coconut shavings, and rice on the bottom. I really enjoyed the amount of seafood in the bowl, but the broth could benefit from additional infusions of lemongrass and clam juice. I enjoyed it, but knew it could be better. Our complimentary bread was fresh, soft, and addictive when accompanied with the serving of olive oil. Our server was from Arizona and she was upbeat, enthusiastic, and very friendly. This turned out to be a comforting meal on a cool breezy day. I'd be very interested in coming back with Santi to try their Pan Roast, Stews, and Gumbos.

Fantastic service and fantastic food. Two thumbs up I had the garlic linguini and it was so delicious! Tons of prawns and shrimp. My husband had the Sharks cioprinno and it was amazing!

I'm a local who has many seafood options in the area. I've eaten here alone from time to time and have brought guests here as well over the course of more than 10 years. The food has always been superb, fresh and so tasty. My favorites are the seafood gumbo or the seafood curry. big bowl, lots of fresh seafood in each dish. Locally baked bread always great. The service is excellent. Only downside is only open for dinner and it is not too big (probably a good thing).

Well we came here due to all the great reviews! A little disapointed in menu selection as my husband is a carnivore and they pretty much only had ciopinno, fish stews and lots of pasta! I love ciopinno but this one has a strong sauce! It tasted just like a minestrone soup with a lot of dried basil, not a fan! My husband had the clam linguine it was very watery and not much flavor! We only had 2 days at the coast here from AZ wasted 1 meal here! The presentaion of dishes were very nice however!

An excellent seafood restaurant in a humble setting of Newport historical bay area. There signature Cioppino itself is worth the wait and visit. It is full of flavors and fresh seafood. On our visit we had the Cioppino and the snapper (catch of the day). Both tasted excellent and were very well prepared. The best thing is that all food is steamed, keeping the flavors intact and food healthy. The sitting is limited and the restaurant only opens for dinners (4-9 pm). Setting is casual and staff is friendly. Definitely recommended.

Maybe the owner should hire some help so she's not running around like a chicken with her head cut off. The place filled up all at once, we were some of the first ones there so our food was ordered but trying to get hot sauce or water refills or more bread was impossible. And they serve the WORST "Best" Cioppino in the world. It's a big bowl of sweet (really sweet) tomato soup with some shrimp and fish and A LOT of canned stewed tomatoes for 15 bucks. I added a ton of salt and poured half my water glass into it. Our empty dirty appetizer plate sat in front of us the entire time we ate our meal. We had 2 bowls of soup and combo shrimp crab cocktail and a couple beers for SIXTY FIVE dollars. Save yourself some time and money and don't bother. They're making a killing off the food they should at least hire a wait staff to not sacrifice service. When we finally were able to grab her attention to ask for the check she presented it to us without clearing out plates. Come on now, basic server 101 is DO NOT present the check with dirty plates still on the table. Karyn was super friendly but in way over her head. I find it greedy that the owners of a place would sacrifice service to keep all the food profits along with table tips for themselves. Hire some help.

Small place, seats around 30, including the bar. Had one waitperson that also served as bartender. Arrived at 7:50 and sat at the bar. Didn't receive drink until 8:25. Ordered linguine and clams. Perhaps the worst pasta I have ever had in a restaurant. It was exactly like the noodles in Campbell's chicken noodle soup. It must have been held, fully cooked for hours. Clams were gritty. Atmosphere is a dive. There were four in our party, their entrees were equally unappealing. We laughed about how terrible our experience was many times as we drove the next day. Topic of discussion, which was worse, the food or the service. Truly don't understand the four star rating.

We had dinner here in the "off" season, mid-April after most spring breaks were over. It is small and was full, so we ate at the bar, facing a large fish tank. The only waitress seemed to greet everyone by name, spin with a calm efficiency, and made us, as strangers, feel quite welcome and taken care of. The food was very good: great fresh oysters for me and my husband thoroughly enjoyed the cioppino. I also ordered a salad (quite fresh) and a child's portion of pasta with red sauce (quite tasty). But be warned: the portions here are generous and, for me, it had been easy to order more than I could handle. Next time, I would order in stages. We left smiling and satisfied, as if we, were we to live in Newport, might be welcomed by name after a few more visits. I would return.

The ambiance is funky and lowers your expectations. But the food. Oh my gosh. Best seafood on the central Oregon Coast. Do yourself a favor and go have dinner at Sharks. You will be back again and again.

Absolutely delicious. Best restaurant I've experienced in Newport so far. Sharks' Curry is my favorite. Spicy but creamy and completely DANK! The owners are a married couple. She is a great, kind hostess and he is mean cook and a boss! Hope this place never leaves and lasts forever.

Sharks! I was just reminded of this by friends visiting the Oregon Coast. Reasonable prices for high quality food, outstanding cioppino, and really great staff. Sit at the bar to watch them cook, and if you're nice, they'll tell you all about the steamer system they salvaged from a submarine!

    (5)
  • D T.

Worth just to see the steamers they use out of a submarine to cook dinners. Super nice folks, tasty fresh seafood and a cool retro feel to the interior. Sit at the bar by the steamers and watch you food being prepared.

Sharks is our favorite place to eat on the Oregon coast and we are locals! We always eat ciopinno for Christmas Eve dinner using sharks pre made sauce. This year I completely forgot to buy it and realized that unfortunately, they are closed for a winter break!!! I panicked and emailed them through the website to ask if it was available anywhere else locally. I got a very fast response back offering to meet me at the restaurant around noon on Christmas Eve so I could continue my ciopinno tradition! I'm absolutely blown away at the kindness the owners have shown us. These people represent what a small town business should be. Thank You again, Shark's! Eat here people!!!!!!! Happy Holidays

  • Laura S.

Everything here is cooked to perfection! I only eat out when I know I can't cook it better at home, and this is one of those places. The order of fresh crab was gigantic, the salad and homemade dressing was amazing, and the margarita was THE best I've ever had. The owner, Karen, was beyond delightful and so helpful with explaining different dishes. If you want seafood, this is the place to go!

  • Seanna D.

If you are looking for a delicious seafood meal, order the cioppino... it is mouth watering delicious and will leave your dreaming of more, more, more. If you'd like it with a little extra carbs you can choose the option with noodles which also comes with mussles. We have dined in and also ordered for take out and the quality of the food is great either way. We prefer take out because the interior is in need of a major face lift and they do not provide high chairs for young children. Plus, the seating is super cramped. The staff is friendly, efficient and quick. I have had fishermans stew (same type of dish) from Local Ocean and Saffron Salmon and Sharks wins the golden ribbon and by far knocks it out of the park!!

Looking at the outside and even glancing in the window, you wouldn't expect a whole lot and may even walk by. It only seat about just over 20 to 25 people, including the bar, and isn't "fancy". That was perfectly fine for my son and I last week, on 8/5/15. We wanted a good non-pretentious meal - and we were blown away by the results. We are from coastal NC, so we know decent seafood. Out of a week in Newport and in Portland - this was the best meal of our trip. I had the Cioppino Pasta and my son had the Halibut with "heavenly garlic sauce" and veggies and salad. Wow doesn't cover it. His fish was perfectly cooked and the sauce was extremely good. I will very much try to replicate it because it really was that good. The salad and vegetables were great. It was a huge portion and all very fresh. He loved it. I had the Cioppino with pasta and it was incredible! Seafood was perfectly cooked and I got a huge amount of the broth, much more than I've gotten at other places and I was NOT complaining. It hit every one of my taste buds and left me feeling completely satisfied and happy. The pasta was linguine, which is my favorite pasta, and it wasn't over cooked. (Huge amount of food though. My son finished mine.) People sitting at the bar next to us got the same entrees as us, but started with the Vera Cruz cocktail. I saw a review where someone complained about it, but they may never have had a ceviche or something like this. It was gorgeous and a huge portion. We left before they finished their entrees, but we were talking and they were very happy with their experience also. If I ever get back to Oregon, this is a MUST on my list. Some of the best places are the ones that you wouldn't expect. For the price of the food, it was fantastic.

I'm not really a fan of seafood, but I had their curry seafood dish and it was one of the best meals I've ever had. The seafood was amazingly tasty and cooked to perfection. Everyone at my table was thrilled with how good the seafood was. Can't wait to get back to Newport for another meal here. I may just stop saying I don't care for seafood because of this place! The owners, Car and Corky, were super friendly and helpful as they cooked the seafood, waited and served customers. They know what they're doing!

  • Donni B.

The best chappino I have ever eaten and I'm italian! We got one of their seafood cocktails and it was loaded with fresh ingredients. My husband got their version of a cobb salad. He has been telling everyone how yummy it was. It's not very big so you will need to be patient. Don't take the kids hungry or without something to do. We will go back.

  • Steve R.

I echo the comments in the previous reviews. Visited for first time yesterday. Very welcoming and cosy setting. Excellent service and seafood, fresh and yummy. Chappino excellent. Even the dinner salad (crumbly blue cheese!!) and freshly baked bread were excellent.

Love, love, love, love Sharks! The Choppino is Amazing! Service always wonderful and they make you feel right at home. We come here every time we're in Newport and have never had a bad experience. Lovely food with a comfortable unpretentious atmosphere.

I spent a weekend in Newport about 10 years ago and ate at Sharks twice. Since then, I've considered the Shark's curry as one of the best things I've ever eaten! Last week, I found myself in Portland for a wedding and took a day trip with my family to the Oregon Coast, and of course, we went to dinner at Shark's. It's exactly like I remembered it, and the Shark's curry was delicious yet again. Others got the cioppino, gumbo and the dungy crab special. Everyone was very happy with their meals! The owner/hostess/waitress is awesome. She's very attentive and helpful. She wrote little notes on all of our doggy bags!

  • Jeff D.

Funky, laid back, perhaps Leary inspired? Cioppino. If you don't try Shark's Ciopinno before you die, you have not lived a full life.

  • Mary F.

Our girls insist in eating at Sharks whenever we are near Newport. The hostess/waitress/owner is the best. She always makes us feel at home and even remembered our family on our latest visit. Needless to say, the girls we're tickled. The cioppino is truly the best. Go for the Super Bowl and you'll appreciate the leftovers tomorrow. The Bloody Mary is a work of art and the best I've had anywhere. The girls love the Little Mermaids. We all tried the Oysters on the Half Shell. I'm a little wimpy with raw oysters but they did taste good. Hubby said they were awesome.

Excelent quality and not fried. You can taste all the flavors and enjoy the food without the fat. Service is very friendly too. Recommended

  • Food L.

Came here on last week of April. We tried their cioppino (Super bowl) and combo pot roast. The cioppino had too much of the tomato flavor and that was the dominant flavor we could taste. It was too strong and prevented us from tasting the seafood. The combo pot roast had pretty good flavor and creamy, but there ware not a lot of seafood even with the combo (crab, oyster, shrimp). We had the pot roast in Las Vegas and that is still the best. The owner was very nice and friendly. She was attentive too. So may be just this one time that the cook added too much of their own cioppino sauce mix.

This place is the best!!!!! Cioppino is the bomb. Great service and worth the trip to the beach to enjoy it.

  • Tiana A.

The cioppino is aaaaamazing. They are very generous with the amount of seafood they put in and I won't eat it anywhere else after being spoiled at Sharks and disappointed by others. I have not tried much else on the menu as I can't go there and not have the cioppino! The lady serving is very enthusiastic and you can tell she cares about the customers.

Three words: World Class Seafood. My wife and I have been Sharks' regulars for the past decade or so and make a point to visit every time we're in Newport. Great atmosphere, love the family owned and operated feel. If you've never had the Cioppino you're missing out. It belongs on your bucket list.

The best cioppino in the town or anywhere. The curry cioppino is also outstanding. Make sure you sit at the bar and watch the cook make hush magic! My wife and i always make this a priority stop when we visit Newport.

Most fruit plates are filled with apples oranges and grapes, this fruit plate had a little bit of everything it was great. Our large party of six was well taken care of. It's a limited menu for someone who doesn't enjoy seafood but the Alfredo pasta was perfect. The clams were the best I've had in a long time super tender and very garlicky! The cioppino was loaded with tender seafood. What a delight I will go back!

I love a place that has few items on the menu, focusing in on doing something extremely well. Shark's is that place, Cioppino done perfectly. As I arrived a group was on their way out after having asked for fish and chips and a recommendation. The answer was "no, we don't do fish and chips, no I don't know where you can get them, I don't do fried fish and chips". Love this woman! She's fantastic and totally part of the experience, she feeds her pet Apollo shark, Barry, red peppers and zucchini! We ordered the steamer clams for an appetizer, as touted, the amazing garlicky broth is perfect for dipping and I found a purple pearl in my clam! We both opted for the cioppino and it arrived steaming hot and delicious. Everything was perfect, the ratio of fish to shrimp to crap to flavor was absolutely wonderful. I would recommend it over and over!!!!

Our party of nine arrived about an hour before closing and we were greeted warmly by the waitress. No, I should elaborate on this point... we were greeted by the most friendly waitress that I have ever met. This lady told jokes, stories and was open to talk in depth about menu items but most of all she was good for both very attentive service and a hearty laugh. To be honest I attribute at least a entire star to the efforts that our waitress went through to give us an enjoyable meal. The food wasn't shabby either but at the prices on the menu you should expect as much. Now, after sampling a little of each dish on our table I'll tell you that you probably can't go wrong with anything. The group I was with particularly liked the Ciopinno so if you want a safe choice then go ahead pick that. Anyway, if you happen to be in Newport then stop by Sharks and they'll dish you up a good time.

Every time I go to Newport, I make sure to visit Sharks. Service is great, food is fresh. It's that simple. They do not fry any food. Instead it is cooked in steamer kettles. If's fun to sit up at the bar and watch them cook your meal. The Cioppino is stellar! It's healthy, super yummy, and the staff are amazingly friendly.

We all went to Sharks on a whim and boy was it a treat! The space is cramped, but the food is great and the service was prompt and friendly. Sharks is a must go for anyone in the area.

Amazing. Excellent service and everything is fresh and flavorful. My BF loves the 16 ingredient Bloody Mary and the salmon. The Cioppino is to die for. Watch the chef prepare it fresh in front of you. Wish we lived closer.

Amazing food! We came into town a little late in the evening (off season) and it was pretty quiet everywhere. We were told to go to Local Ocean, drove down, it it was closed at 7:30 on a Saturday night! Drove down the bay front to find out so many dinner places were already closed. Saw Sharks and thank god they were open. We were starving and the food was incredible. Not to mention Caren our server was extremely sweet and lovely, she is just the best. We felt so welcome and taken care of. Definitely recommend this place. We will be back!

We had the friendliest service ever here. One woman ran the entire restaurant, and she was both efficient and infectiously energetic. The restaurant is teeny tiny, perhaps four tables and about eight tightly packed-in bar stools. If you can get a seat, you will not be disappointed in the food. I had a heaping portion of steaming hot cioppino served over linguini. It was an incredibly respectable serving of shellfish, fish and pasta that was satisfying for dinner, with plenty left over for the next day.

The girlfriend and I ate there last Saturday best chippino I've ever had. Going back tonight for a repeat performance

One of my favorite restaurants anywhere! I've been going to Sharks for about 20 years, and I've never been disappointed. I always get the cioppino, which I look forward to weeks in advance. We were there Saturday night, and it was as good as ever. The place is very unassuming looking inside and out. The same couple has owned and run the restaurant as far back as I can remember. If you're in Newport, and you love seafood, don't miss Sharks!

Perfection in a rustic romantic seafood spot. The place is small and you may have to wait a little to sit down or for your food but just relax and enjoy the place, talk to the people next to you or have a few drinks. My girlfriend and I had one of the most delicious and romantic nights of our lives here a few months ago. The menu is simple and as I understand it the place is run by husband ( chef ) and wife ( waitress ). The crab plate is the best you'll find in the area and we can't wait to come back. People recommended the place to me for years and I'm so glad we finally had a chance to eat here. We will be back.

Don't order the steamed oysters, they come with a pile of salad and fruit and is very unappetizing. My friends ordered oyster linguini that was not linguini at all but spaghetti with a salt water soup. I would order the oysters raw, have a beer, and get out. Two stars for the really friendly service, but then I wish she had been friendly enough to tell me that I would not have liked the main course.

I feel like they must have lost their chef and maybe their best waiter or ??? First, the good news. We were seated promptly and cheerily and given water without ice without a problem. We were delighted to see that nothing was fried. Then the disappointments began to pile up... The bread arrived with no butter or olive oil. My girlfriend's Lemon Drop was undrinkable due to poor quality juice (the waitress said she had added "real lemon juice"). There was no draft beer - only bottles, blamed on recent construction. We ordered the large order of steamers and the Bouillabaisse (which was enthusiastically described as the MOM - the mother of all meals). Everything was served in an unappetizing broth which had lots of garlic but still managed to be tasteless. The steamers were so tiny we could not taste them - we had just had wonderful steamers for lunch at a small place in Yachats so the failure was even more acute. The Bouillabaisse was generous in its content (advertised as almost 3 pounds of seafood), but was again presented in that terrible broth. And we had to ask for small plates in order to consume it. Finally, when we were all done and our water glasses had been empty for some time, the waitress appeared to ask if we needed more water. She did not ask why the Lemon Drop was not consumed. The bill was much higher than the quality of the food and the service deserved. Our B&B host had recommended this place and it has received lots of great reviews but our experience was one of the worst restaurant experiences we have had in some time. I cannot recommend it.

Pretty good overall -- probably worth four stars...but the kids' burrito was an embarrassment. It was not consistent with the rest of the menu, so we didn't expect it to be much, but it was ridiculous -- literally, a $0.50 frozen burrito microwaved and served with a wedge of melon for $6.95. No, I'm serious -- you need to understand this. Go to the grocery store, look in the frozen food section, and find the frozen burritos. They cost $0.50 and they are horrendous. That is EXACTLY what my kid was served for $6.95. I really find it hard to believe that a place would serve that. The rest of the meal was good, but not exceptional. The kids' meal just made me mad.

Kinda pricey for what you get. Now, some of the dishes, the portions are huge! I saw someone order what seemed like a bucket of clams dumped in a bowl. Crazy. My wife ordered a super bowl of the garlic pasta. Just saying Super Bowl, one pictures a massive bowl. Well, it was! Tons of tasty pasta, with tons of garlic, etc for $16 spent. I aim for the Shark's stew, which I've heard great things of. Now, it did taste good, but it was just a bowl of very watery soup with a handful of seafood tossed in. This should have been something in the $14-16 range, if that, as well, however, they wanted $20 for it. Ouch. The oyster shooters, at $1.50 each, was a great deal. So, food itself...great! Portions and value? Hit or miss. Our waitress was outstanding, however. Super chipper, really into selling the product.

Picked this place because it had so many good reviews! The owner was really friendly but the food... it wasn't awful, certainly not the worst I had but well, I had the clam linguine and it was so bland, no flavor AT ALL, it was the blandest meal I'd ever eaten, and I paid about $17 dollars for it. My boyfriends meal came in an incredibly watery sauce and he said it had so much garlic it was almost inedible. The place was very full, but we received no checkup on our meal after we got it (and it did arrive to us quickly, which is a positive) and we asked for more water and then waited forever to receive it. Overall we were just really disappointed with the whole thing. Maybe we just ordered the wrong dishes, but this is not a place I would recommend to someone, nor go back to.

The day I tried Shark's Cioppino, was the day I died and went to heaven! The ocean was bluer and the grass got greener with each and every heavenly bite. I even met an angel there named Karen! She spoke in the sweetest voice and attended to every need. For those of you that can't make it to Newport, OR for this taste of heaven then log onto their website and order the starter broth. Yes, it is so good that they sell the Cioppino starter on-line! If you make it at home, be sure to add a spoon of butter at the bottom of each serving for extra goodness! I load up on a half dozen bags each time I'm in Newport!

Amazing seafood. Get the cioppino! A rare find on the coast. Consistently good. We have been coming for many years and Sharks never disappoints, unless we arrive and they are closed.

The one thing this place has going for it is the friendlies server EVER! She was great and super helpful. Unfortunately she couldn't make the food taste good. I feel bad leaving a less than stellar review because I liked her so much. If you have ever seen the show Kitchen Nightmares, this is the kind of place that would be on that show. I cannot comment to the kitchen cleanliness, but everything else reminded me of that show. The portions were HUGE, beyond ridiculous. The decor was really outdated. And we were the only people in there on a on Friday night at 7pm. Other places near by looked pretty busy....not this place. This should have been our first clue. We started our evening with the steamer clams. I was expecting this delicious broth, but was disappointed by what seemed like salted water with little to no flavor. The clams were tender, but the dish was so hot that it makes me wonder if they were microwaved. For dinner my husband ordered the special; steamed cod with coconut and a salad. Holy crap, the salad took over the plate. The fish was tender and tasted fresh. But that salad. No joke. I ordered a seafood tomato based pasta (I can't remember what they called it). There was a good portion of chunk crab meat and shrimp (large and small) atop a HUGE portion of pasta in a sauce that looked like tomato soup and tasted like it had come from a can. There was no depth in the flavor at all (and this is coming from a tomato soup fan). I stuck to eating the seafood and left the pasta behind. Again both plates of food came out so hot that we couldn't touch them for a few minutes and had to blow on them to cool them down. And both plates came out pretty fast. For the high prices that we paid (total dinner $65 more or less) I would have expected fresh seafood (which we got) with some flavors to rave about. Nothing tasted horrible. It was palatable, but nothing we had was great, or even good, with the exception of maybe the bread. We love visiting Newport and are there often enough to know now that we won't be back to Sharks anytime soon. There are other places in town that offer fresh fish at a more reasonable price and that you can say "Yum" about afterward.

Best seafood in Newport. Cioppino is amazing. Great oysters!

Went here while passing through town. While the staff was super friendly and nice, the service was very very slow. I believe it was a spring break weekend, which may have caught them off guard. We had the oyster in a half shell and the cioppino. The cioppino was fine albeit pricey; the oysters were not good at all. If you do come here, I would be sure and check how full the place is and how many busy they appear to be.

I can't say enough good things about this place. First, the back story. This guy I'm dating tells me it's awesome. His parents then tell me it's THE place to go when in Newport (they go every year for the Seafood and Wine festival). My dear fish HATING friend says it was great. GREAT. Not good, not okay for seafood...he actually gives it praise! So last year we finally make it down to the coast, and it's true. I have the cioppino like everyone else and it's great. There's SO MUCH seafood, and the sauce is delicious. I haven't had better since, and believe me, I've tried. The wine list is lacking, the seating is limited, and they don't take reservations but they are always at capacity and even with these things that should make my ranking lower, the food is SO GOOD that it more than makes up for it. We went to the Seafood and Wine festival this weekend, and I had to post about Sharks because of the great experience we had last night. We met the owner (she'd be the one greeting you and taking your order) and she was a delight. Proud of the work that's been put into as well as the community, she'll gladly speak to you about the steamer pots that help to make each entree so tasty. This time, I went with the bouillabase, and it was EVEN better, but I'll admit I missed my tomatoes. The quality is top notch, the service doesn't lack even when it's filled to capacity, and the care that Sharks takes to make sure every patron has this delicious food (but seriously, you've gotta try the cioppino) is evident. GO. You won't regret it, apparently, even if you hate seafood.

What a quirky place. Seating for about 20-25 guests. The owner is super friendly, Almost too friendly, but still was refreshing. The food was outstanding! Service was a little strange. I had iced tea and waitress came to "freshen up" my iced tea. I got some ice out in my glass! We had to ask 3 times for more water. It was a fun experience and would go back again the next time we are here. A great local place with many guests on a first name basis with the owner.

What a great meal! My kids had the crab which was amazing and according to them, the best they ever tasted. I had the ciopinno which was divine. My husband had the Gumbo which he said was to die for. The staff were so friendly. It is now our favourite restaurant and only wished we lived closer so we could go more often! A great place to eat.

Yum! Great steamer joint. Clams... Muscles... Great seafood-loaded cioppino served over linguini. Small place, plays the fishing town card a little hard with decor, but that's the fun of it!

It has been a couple of years since I've been here. Till this day, Sharks' Cioppino is the best seafood pasta I've EVER had in my life. They use the freshest seafood, quality is what you taste. It is unforgettable!!

People, cioppino is not supposed to taste like spicy ketchup soup. It's supposed to be in a clearer broth that doesn't overpower the star of the dish, the seafood. Service was awful. What does it take to fill a water glass now and then?

pure seafood with small number of items but good stuff and large servings. Awesome salads, curry and cioppino was awesome; service was great

Simply outstanding seafood. Simple surroundings, exuberantly helpful owner/server, perfectly adequate wine and local beer selections at reasonable mark-up. Crab salad was almost laughingly large and pleasantly presented, my dungeness was picked to perfection...not a whiff of cartilage. When one's biggest complaint is that the salad dressings aren't thick enough you have made a pretty nice find. Nine people (1 ordering from modest kid's menu) with (outrageously meaty and just-so briny) oysters, a few beers and 1.5 bottles of wine was $250 plus tip. And truly worth it. Give these folks a try!

We went in with the plan of having Sunset Magazine's "Best in the West" cioppino. That got derailed with the infectious friendliness of the waitress who seemed to be running the place all by herself. (She's phenomenal.) Instead of our original plan we got two of the specials that night: scallops and prawns. While the scallops were pretty good, the shrimp tasted boiled or steamed, not cooked in garlic and butter, as advertsied, what struck us both was that the fish was tucked away on a small corner of the plate while the rest of the plate was MOUNDED with lettuce! The specials were advertised to us (by the fabulous Energizer-bunny waitress) as coming with salad, fresh fruit, and bread. The bread was already on the table, the fresh fruit consisted of one triangle of pineapple, two slices of cantaloupe, 4 green grapes and about a dozen blueberries. That's fine -- I don't expect fruit with my dinner. However, when nearly the ENTIRE plate was piled high with more lettuce than one person could eat (esp. if they didn't think they'd ordered a dinner salad!), the scallops are OK but nothing to write home about (and why did they have parmesan cheese on them?), and you're asking $26 for this? Huh? Really? Between our two entrees (@ $26 each), a bottle of wine, an appetizer and one drink, the bill was $100. Most of which we felt went toward paying for lettuce. Should have stuck with the original plan.

My family and I have been going here for years since we first discovered it in the mid 90's. The Cioppino is something that anyone who loves seafood MUST try in their lifetime. If I didn't live so damn far away I would go here at least once a week. Prices are good, the waitress is great and always recognizes my family and attends to anything we could possibly want. I can't wait to go back here, it's been too long!

This is the best seafood restaurant on the Oregon Coast. The owner is super friendly and the Cioppino is excellent!!!! The fresh seafood is purchased locally and they don't serve anything fried. Killer stews, soups and gumbo loaded with fresh seafood. If you're a seafood fan, don't think twice, just go and enjoy.

Excellent food! Friendly service, a little slow but worth the wait!!!!! Soooo yummy:) We shared the shrimp Louie, the dressing was great. I had the shark curry, fantastic! My mom had the combination stew and loved it!

Great Ciopinno, great oyster shooters, the owner is super friendly and is great for asking questions. Service was quick and easy.

Of course Karyn is fantastic and PA Kettle is what you would expect, an old Sea Salt..hard working, matter of fact and good at what he does. What sets this restaurant apart is that they do not take a single customer for granted. They are genuinely thankful for your business and the love that goes in to the food and service shows it. You are going to pay a little more here than other place but it really is as close as you will get to made to order quality Chefs fare instead of reheated frozen portions. If you are in Newport, don't even consider anything else unless you are on a tight budget.

A couple years later, the cioppino and the atmosphere are still great. And either the wine selection has gotten better or I was just being a bad sport last time. The best dinner to be had on the Oregon coast, and I'm not sure it's even close.

The Best dinner on the Oregon coast! The service is excellent & the food could NOT be better. Delicious!!!! P.s. If you like deep fried food, don't go here.

This place was such a find! Tucked at the end of the street - if you weren't looking for it, you probably wouldn't have found it. We walked in and were instantly greeted by the owner who said, "welcome aboard!" We sat at the bar - really the place to be in this tiny, tiny place and we ordered clam steamers, and two orders of the cioppino. It was FANTASTIC. The coolest part is that everything is steamed right there in front of you from these little steam pots salvaged from a submarine or something. It was very fun and cool. Bonus that they have Black Butte Porter on draft. A must try if you are an out of town-er with a hankering for a nice dark beer.

Great place, a diamond in the rough. Seafood Gumbo, FTW! But the Ciopinno was a bit too sweet for me, but that is matter of personal preference, I believe. 4.5 stars

Wonderful atmosphere. The service is excellent. We've eaten here on our last three trips to Newport and the food is always great. The Cioppino in 2003 was chosen by Sunset Magazine as the Best in the West!!!! You will find well presented and prepared dungeness crab. Try the Huckleberry Ice cream for desert.

We struggled finding a nice restaurant for a sit down dinner and were pleased to find a seafood restaurant that was not full of fried food! Service was exceptional, food was great and prices reasonable. Highly recommend!

Im torn whether to give five and four for the sole reason that this spot is obviously no longer in its prime. However, the lady who owns and operates it is as nice as someone can get and she is proud of her operation. The cioppino was delicious as was the dungeoness crab dinner. Huge salads. Great small spot on the bay harbor. Once the sidewalks and street are complete i bet it will be even nicer. Help keep this place going if your in newport by stopping by and grabbing a meal...you wont be disappointed.

OK - this place prides itself on having some of the best Cioppino on the West Coast. I guess Sunset magazine even wrote them up as having one of the best. DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE!!!! It was too sweat and was mainly tomatoes - would be better off calling it sweat tomato soup with a bit of fish. I'd rant further, but I also want to review there bloody mary. Before I do that, I'll give a few positives. 1) Service was nice and friendly 2) Bouillabaisse was good, although it should have been for the $35 price tag. *********Bloody Mary Review*************** They describe having a 15 ingredient bloody mary, so well, I had to try it. While I do believe there was 15 ingredients - my main complaint (like the Cioppino) was that it was way too sweet. What I don't understand it how they got it so sweet. They must have added sugar, which is just an awful thought. I have never heard of adding any sweetener to a BM. Some of the other stuff they put in like dill might have been good, but I just couldn't get past it being so darn sweet. It also came in a very small cup, which is always a huge no no in my book.

This one was a head scratcher for me, they make a big deal about "nothing fried" yet it appears the food is steamed in oil, which likely makes it every bit as heavy as fried food if not more so. My plate of fish with a huge mound of salad did not look very appealing and was actually quite bland. Other tables seemed to be going for the cioppino, so maybe that's what you should order. The service is very friendly and earnest though, but what's with the sign forbidding photos or video of any kind? Weird.

Yummy! My husband and I were looking for a restaurant on the bay front and decided to check out Yelp for suggestions. Thank you Yelpers!!! We were so happy we chose Sharks and were able to avoid the multitude of deep-fried, greasy alternatives. From the outside, it looks like a total dive bar that serves your typical pub fare...but it doesn't! We were promptly greeted by the extremely friendly hostess/waitress/owner(?) and offered our choice of a table. As soon as we sat down we were given a plate of warmed bread (combo of wheat and french) to snack on as we browsed the menu. They offer a nice selection of fresh, locally caught seafood that hasn't been cooked by drowning it in oil. I had the cioppino with pasta and my husband had the seafood gumbo. Both were killer and we couldn't decide which one we liked more. Generous portion sizes and reasonable prices. I will definitely be back and am so glad to have found this hidden gem!

All previous reviews are right on about the cioppino! IT IS INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!! Again, the lady who runs the place, and her man, who stays more toward the back of the house, are wonderful! Lots of energy, good background music, nice seaside decor. We planned and did go on Sunday night, which was perfect as it wasn't crowded, as we'd seen that it was the night before. We sat at the back eating bar, where we could observe the cooking, which is done primarily in the steam heated bowls the owner got from a submarine! :-) Good bread, good wine, good dessert, too!

Over probably a dozen visits, this remains our favorite place for seafood in the area. Everything we've had there has been great, and the service (Karin in particular) has been great! One reviewer thought the cioppino and bloody mary's were sweat (sic) - though I can't speak for the bloody mary's, the cioppino is anything but sweet - it's by far the best cioppino I've had anywhere. The seafood is always of generous sizes, and served on an attractive plate with lettuce and fruits for a really classy presentation. Though some prices are higher than what you might pay for entrees elsewhere, you'll rarely find this quality of seafood anywhere else.

The waitress was fantastic! The food was the best that we had in Newport, OR. We had the dungeness crab, which was excellent. Highly recommended restaurant and right downtown with everything. And the fish were entertaining, they love squash!

We almost didn't go inside because it was so crowded and didn't look like the atmosphere we wanted. We couldn't have been more wrong. The food was exceptioal, reasonably priced and they overdeliver everything. Corky and Carin are the highlight with their love of people, quick wit and ability to kibittz while working. The place is Tiny, the service is prompt and the food is ocean fresh and not your regular seafood fare. It's better. If you want Fish n Chips go down the street. If you want to savor every bite, then ENJOY. My husband and I shared one meal and didn't have room for the sumptuous looking dessert.

Always the best, fresh seafood. On a budget? Order a huge bowl of cioppino or a pasta seafood (not the super bowl, no human could finish such a large portion) and you will be more than satisfied. Ready to splurge? Order one of the seafood specials or already picked dungeness crab. The crab louis salad is my favorite. Sit at the bar to view the unique steam cooking process and have a conversation with the salty shark himself.

We decided to go to our favorite place for dinner last night, Sharks on Newport's Waterfront. We have eaten here many time and know that we always get superb food and service. Our party had the following off the menu. My wife had the Seafood Cippino Pasta which comes in a very large bowl filled to the brim with a wide array of fabulous seafood and a luscious tomatoey sauce. Our son had the Garlic linguini that was also served in very large bowl that was filled with pasta and a boat load of bay shrimp and prawns in a wonderful garlicky sauce. My choice was their signature dish the New York Steam Pot. It is served in a huge mug type bowl again filled to the brim with a smooth creamy tomato based broth and was packed with Dungeness Crab legs and back meat, Prawns, Oysters, Bay Shrimp and Cod. This was the first time I had ordered this dish and it was fabulous! For those who choose to come to Sharks you'll not be disappointed. During our meal we heard parties talking with the waitress and had two parties from Germany and another from Finland. It appears that Sharks reputation is reaching across the Atlantic and into Europe. They open their doors for dinner at 4ish and usually have a line waiting for the doors to open. Since the restaurant only seats about 25 people plan on arriving early and be patient, it's worth every minute you may wait.

Ate here numerous times & food always very good. If rating food alone, I'd give 4 stars but sometimes it doesn't matter how good the food is if dining experience is bad. I had to wait to post to calm down or it'd be much worse. We came in & at my husband's insistence sat at the bar where you can see food being prepared. I asked the owner/chef a question in regards to something he & his wife told us 2 yrs ago. What i was asking was wrong & he flipped out & got very angry. Raised voice saying "I can't believe you don't know that"!!.. I asked specifically about what I was told by him. It's no different than me saying " I can't believe you don't know my name by now" but that's absurd & I wouldn't expect it. The night was even more fun when I asked about a specific salmon he prepares. He thought I wanted his secret recipe. I know he wouldn't give that out & I wouldn't expect it. I tried over & over to ask "Which is the salmon I like so I know when to come in. What would it say on a menu or under special for that day"? Truly that's all I was asking but he interrupted over & over. I finally gave up and walked out. Sat outside til hubby paid the bill. Again, the food is good but sure as hell NOT GOOD ENOUGH to be yelled at by the owner. I DON'T WANT YOUR RECIPE & I WASN'T ASKING FOR IT. YOU'RE HOT HEADED AND YOU LOST A CUSTOMER. Next time, might want to be quiet & let your "guest" finish their question before you jump in and attack!!!! BTW, your wife is sweet as can be but way too much for one person. Not her fault but you really need to hire some help.

My fiancee and I were traveling through Newport on a west coast road trip and decided to pop in here for dinner. The name of the place doesn't suggest fine dining to me and the decor confirmed that point. I, however, not being from the area, tried to go into our meal with an open mind and I expected at least decent seafood based on the previous reviews. We were greeted by a frantically friendly woman behind the bar who seated us and began running us through the menu, strongly urging us to try the cioppino (I did not and would later regret that decision). I asked if they had any oysters, which they did not seem to based on the menu, and she said yes, so we ordered a half dozen. We were shortly thereafter brought what were the most unappetizing oysters I've ever seen. They were dry, room temperature, and on a bed of wilted lettuce. I struggled to finish half of them. In the meantime, we had never even been asked to put in a drink order despite there only being another table of four in the entire restaurant, but that ended up being a good thing because I wanted to get out as soon as possible. In all, I was very disappointed with our experience, but I was happy I didn't get sick. We ended up at the Rogue tap room just down the street in an attempt to salvage the night. I'd very reluctantly go back, but only to try the cioppino.
