This Hawaiin inspired, themed and decorated little cafe sits in Nye Beach in Newport. It's more then just a little cafe, I walked in and was instantly drawn to the kids corner and I climbed a (2 stair step stool) to the top of an erupting volcano! I was offered a photo op on the other side of the cafe to take my picture pretending to surf with the mural that is painted on the wall. The first person of contact was our server, he (can I say his name?) Bruce we'll call him (wink, wink) was fantastic. Great service, very helpful, informative and even came to our table when his shift was over just to say goodbye and for a little chit chat. The pizza dough was hand tossed. If you are a bread lover, you will love this dough! The slices are HUGE, sorta brooklyn style because you can fold it in half. We ordered a large lumber jack (super meaty and delicious) and a personal hawaiin. I would say the size of the personal pizza is about the same size as a domino's medium pizza....FOR $12, you can't beat that!! This cafe offers vegitarian and gluten free items, I would say that they acctually have good selection of such items on the menu. More then I typically see, at least. A must stop if you are in Newport.

Great Vegetarian place etc...but still has a rockstar calzone! The calzone was huge & excellent so I can believe that pizza here is prob way above par!

We had such a nice time here. Very laid back and friendly, low stress. Strong tropical drinks!! We had a nice pizza, very thin and lots of meat. Homemade hummus and pita appetizer was good. Great with the kids. They had a singer/guitar player, Jenna, who was excellent. It was a great vibe. Dessert was very cool....I can't remember what they called it but it was not mousse or pudding but it was creamy, rich chocolate deliciousness. Only 4 ingredients and none of them was sugar. Super fun place.

Pizza was pretty good and the crust was excellent. Problem....waaaaaaayyyy to long. There was only 1 other table and it took 45 mins to get our 2 pizzas. Was it worth the wait....not next time

Wow! This place is the real deal. The pizza is extremely good and the place is clean, which is not always the case along the coast. Service was very good. Had pizza and salad first night which were great. The pizza was really good! The Caesar was fun and good. Went back the next night and had the calzone and my wife had the meatball pasta dish, both were excellent. I think I prefer the pizza over the calzone because of the crust. The pizza is great, did I mention that?

My husband I got a chili-orange bowl and chipotle tofu tacos. Though both items had chili peppers next to them on the menu, they were both very bland. My bowl was some brown rice, topped with some some sad looking steamed veggies and soaked in an orange juice sauce. Very small serving. The tacos were not at all spicy either.. and I was hoping to have more of a ground, spicy, marinated tofu or something, but it was just soft pieces of tofu drizzled with a bland sauce. It would have been really cool if they had a vegan pizza option, but they didn't even have that. I shall not return.

Vegetarians and vegans staying in Newport need to eat lunch in at least one place that doesn't smell like fish, and this is the place. It's a large, open space with a cute Hawaiian theme. It's also a quick walk to the ocean. We started with the Cheesy Garlic Buds appetizer. It's basically garlic knots with cheese. And that's basically the most delicious thing ever. Definitely get these. Next, my BF ordered the falafel and I got the orange-something-or-other bowl. Their Web site only has a limited view of the menu and I can't remember the name! It was a mix of very fresh vegetables in an orange sauce that definitely had a kick to it. I also added tofu for $1 extra. I enjoyed, and the portion was huge! My boyfriend enjoyed his falafel, which was more like two tacos (except pita bread), which was pretty creative. The service was quick and pleasant. They also have wifi now (as opposed to the review from a year ago below). Apparently the place itself and the menu has had a complete makeover, and while I have no idea what it was like before, I think they've created a good destination for the younger crowd with a more adventurous palate. It is also very gluten-free friendly.

Very good! We ended up here while looking for a vegetarian-friendly spot for a late lunch. I had the cheese penne and it was wonderful. Lots of garlic and a bit of chipotle. My partner had the falafel which was alright, though a little over-cooked and the pita-to-falafel ratio was slightly off. We also ordered the cheesy garlic buds and they were AMAZING! The decor is also very inviting and laid-back, and open, and there is a little area for the kiddos to hang out as well. It is usually hard for us to find good vegetarian spots when we visit the coast, but we will be visiting this one again!

Enjoying this place thus far except for the annoying waitress (not ours- apparently a wandering waitress) who keeps checking on us every thirty seconds. Want a refill? No- I took one sip. Can I clear your plates? No- I just got my appetizer. Would have preferred less "help."

Live music (Th, Fr, Sat evening) good pizza (not great) with bigger lunch menu. I give it 3 1/2 stars.

Great local food, amid quirky surf decor with a laid back vibe. Offers a huge array of cuisines from curries to pastas to pizzas, fish tacos with local catch and even options for vegans. I stumbled in on a blood sugar drop, and they completely took care of me and offered the local info I was looking for. Thanks guys, exactly the spot I needed to take a breather!

Never opens on time. They missed us on 2 Sunday's. Say they open at 11. Not so. We went at 12 and 1230 on two consecutive Sunday's. Not open. In the ten minutes we waited last Sunday, several others came by and were as frustrated as we were. They just shook their heads and walked away. Don't waste your time. If a business that already has strange hours (open at 5pm on Tuesday and closed Wednesday) can't seem to open the doors on time, they will be out of business.

LOVED Savory Cafe. My wife had the gluten-free pizza and I had the fish tacos, and they both blew us away. Also worth mentioning was how awesome the owner was. We walked in slightly late and he and his wife made us feel completely welcome, never rushing us, and even taking time out to chat with us about their past in Hawaii, and encouraging us to make use of the Scrabble tiles and board printed on the table. (We did.) For what was really just a random dinner on the road, our meal at Savory was a genuinely memorable experience.

My friend and I came for a late night dinner and craved some pizza. I ordered the personal Lumberjack pizza and a side Ceasar salad and my friend ordered the Margherita pizza and the house salad. Our waitress asked if we wanted our salads as an appetizer or with our meals. We said as appetizers. We waited about 15 minutes and our pizzas came before our salads. It wasn't much of a big deal as the salad came out 5 minutes after our pizzas came out. My friend asked to leave out the gorganzola cheese but it came out with gorganzola cheese all over her salad. They were willing to make her a new one but she declined and just removed as much as she could. I didn't have any of her salad so I can't comment on it. The side salads are very large and the leaves of Romaine lettuce was so full, it was difficult to cut through the leaves without my salad spilling over the plate! The salad dressing was good but was diluted with the excess water from the leaves of lettuce. The Lumberjack pizza was very good. It came with pepperoni, salami, Canadian bacon, sausage with tomato sauce and mozzarella. On thr other hand, the Margherita pizza was a big disappointment. I'm so use to having at least a tomato base sauce which was absent. They put garlic with olive oil with mozzarella, sliced tomatoes and chopped basil. It was okay. To be honest, I don't think there was any garlic/olive oil base because the pizza was very dry and tasteless. My friend only ate one slice and a slice of mine and left the rest. It just wasn't what we expected. Overall, I think this is a good place to have a nice lunch or dinner. The staff was friendly but the kitchen is somewhat a hit and miss. They have different types of food ranging from pizzas, curries, hummus, burritos, tacos, and salads. Although they make all kinds of different ethnic foods, I think they would be better served to just stick with one type.

I judge a pizza by its dough, and this dough is delish! perfectly crisp on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. Best pizza in town. The service was quick and friendly, and the $14 picher of Red Hook Wit did not hurt either. The medium was large enough to feed 4 people. Great value in a town full of tourist traps. We will be back.

I had the best luck with the servers here. After telling them I was vegan and gluten-free, I was fed the best food ever! I left feeling very stuffed and content.

We stopped in here for lunch the other day. The food was both underwhelming and a little odd. I ordered the savory bowl, which I thought would be your standard beans/rice/veggies combo, pretty hard to mess up. For some reason it had the overpowering flavor of orange juice, which didn't exactly mesh well with the garlic-tahini sauce. It was such an odd flavor combination that I found myself wondering if someone had accidentally spilled o.j. on my food. Luckily I was able to drown out the o.j. flavor (mostly) with copious amounts of sriracha. My husband ordered the falafel, which was similarly unsatisfying. Words used to describe it were "mediocre", "mushy" and "blah". On the plus side, the food seems pretty fresh and healthy and neither of us got stomachaches. Hence the two stars. Coulda been worse, but we probably won't be back.

We decided to stop by Savory Cafe as we were in Newport for the day. We were absolutely underwhelmed. The chipotle bowl had this god awful taste of hot dogs. It seriously tasted like a bowl of hot dog sauce that covered and overwhelmed the beans, rice and unseasoned tofu. I don't know how that is possible but we couldn't finish it because it was so foul. We also got the curry bowl which had a very mild taste. It was just bland. The unseasoned tofu did not help this bowl either.

Had a great time at this cafe. I had the spicy orange shrimp served with sautéed fresh vegetables and jasmine rice. My friend joining me for dinner had the soup (black bean) and salad (greens with walnuts and Gorgonzola cheese), both meals were excellent. We also had a great time playing backgammon on the at our table, the boards are lacquered into the table top, very cool! Only issue is their hours, you have to get there by 8pm or you miss on dinner.

Yum! The meatball pizza is delish. Decent selection of beers. Open until 9pm, but the really awesome folks here stayed open late for us weary travelers to get some grub in before returning to our hotel room (Waves motel). Huge selection to please both the food adventurous and the picky eater. I would definitely hit this spot again and recommend it to anyone visiting the Newport area. Curries, pizzas and wraps = YUM!

Love the appetizers and dessert. Best cheesecake I've ever had. Dinner was ok, not great. Some of the best service I've ever had at a restaurant. I'll be back for dessert.

Tofu is not a vegetable. Just in case you weren't aware. My time at Savory was not fabulous. I arrived in search of wireless, which they didn't have. So instead I settled in for the "fish tacos" listed on a big sign by the door. When I looked at the menu though, the fish tacos were $12. I'm spoiled by cheap, delicious fish tacos and assumed that a beach location could provide the same. So I chose another item: jasmine rice bowl with yellow curry and vegetables. It was an odd time of day: 3pm. For about 15 minutes, I was the only person in the restaurant. They seemed annoyed that I showed up at this inopportune time. My rice bowl took 30 minutes to arrive, so I wondered if they were making the rice from scratch (no explanation ever came). As more people arrived, the atmosphere became more enjoyable, but my hunger did not abate. When my food finally showed up, it was full of tofu. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not opposed to tofu, merely ALLERGIC. That's the problem with not listing ingredients on the menu; not only will you annoy the annoyingly picky, you might affect someone's health. Anyway, the waitress became more pleasant at that point and offered to have the cook make me something new, but I didn't want to wait, so I picked out the tofu and ate the fresh zucchini, peppers and onions in the curry. Which were pretty good, all things considered. This place might be more fun at night.

Savory has undergone a recent change. They now offer pizza in addition to the vegetarian menu. In addition there is a nice little beer and wine bar. The also offer live music several nights a week. The owners were able to buy the pizza ovens and menus from the former Bay Front Pizza which failed last winter when the owners returned to California and tried to operate with hired hands......For a local place this business has potential. The space is nicely decorated and the food is much better than other places in Newport. GIve them a chance...you might enjoy it!!

Really cute place with friendly service, but the food just doesn't deliver. I ordered the "spicy fish tacos." If one reads the fine print they'll see that the sauce is actually sweet and spicy. My thinking was that if they called them spicy, that's the dominant flavor. It wasn't. They were overcooked and tasted like they were coated in Maple Syrup. The black beans (which I normally love) were the most bland that I have ever had in my life. All in all, it was disgusting, and thoroughly disappointing for it being almost $50 for two with dinner+beers.

Stopped in for an early dinner. Uncrowded but took a long time for our food, although the waitress did explain apologetically that they were busy with a "large" to go order. Good bar atmosphere-I kept imagining it would be nice to stop in here after the Seafood and Wine Festival (aka, single and probably tipsy). Pizza was good, but pricey for just plain cheese. Mezze plate was pricey too but enormous. The hummus was good, but the quinoa tabouleh, tzatziki and falafel were all very bland. Came with lots of pita, veggies, feta and olives though so it kinda balanced out. My son enjoyed it.

Went to this restaurant because it had new owners and wanted to give them some business. Unfortunately, I don't think they will be in business too long. Ordered a fish sandwich ($12) came with a bag of potato chips. Fish was good but about the size of a small cupcake. Way overpriced. Friend ordered fish tacos, not good and the worst dish of all was the caprese, came with 3 small old tomatoes (at a time when tomatoes are so plentiful) cheese was okay and one very pathetic basil leaf on the top. Dish looked like it was 3 months old, no balsamic or olive oil on it.. Bill was over $30 and we had to go somewhere else to eat.

We came to the area recently for a big family vacation. Sixteen of us piled into the restaurant for a dinner and they handled us wonderfully! The service was cheerful and efficient, the owner even came out to chat with us after making our delicious cocktails. The Lava Flow is AMAZING by the way. The garlic, cheese bud appetizers are FABULOUS. What a great place. Thank you!

Fantastic new restaurant at Nye Beach! Many choices for vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. I bring my family here and everybody is happy. Staff is warm and friendly. Food is delicious. Don't miss the dessert, even though it's not on the menu! Just ask. This is my new favorite in Newport.

What a nice little place with a great selection of foods. We had just arrived into town and had just put the baby down for a much needed nap, we were basically stuck with any place in walking distance. Out came Yelp and that's when we came across this place. We were famished, and probably ordered more than we should have for a late lunch. My husband ordered the shrimp burrito smothered in peanut sauce, OH MY GOSH! Now we'll ever be able to make burritos ever again without smothering them in peanut sauce... I ordered the spicy fish tacos. I was very happy! I had read the one previous review and still decided to go with it. I enjoyed the sweet with the spice on the fish. The fish pieces were very fresh, well cooked, and the marinade complimented the fish very nicely. The tacos are basically made of fish and lettuce with a sprinkle of tomato, which was great because I wanted to taste the fish. Overall, very happy with our experience and as we frequent Newport, this will most likely become a new regular.

During a trip to Newport on a holiday weekend recently, we found Savory Cafe as it was the only place open in town for a family dinner. When we arrived, no one greeted us or acknowledged us for a full 10 minutes. We stood in a very cramped entryway with 2 other couples in line in front of us. One couple was furious that no one had acknowledged them so they stormed out in a fit. Guess that was our stroke of good luck because a minute after they bolted, someone finally came up and started taking names and tables opened up a minute later. Not a great start, but it's very obvious this place is family-owned with the middle aged parents cooking and racing around and their young teen-aged daughters waitressing. The ambiance is cute: Hawaiian, surfer theme, bright colors- very cheerful and fun. There is a great corner set aside for kids to play that had toys and stuff to climb on. Perfect! My kids ran over and only came to the table when the food arrived. We ordered the cheesy garlic knots with marinara-- SO DELICIOUS. We all scarfed them down in minutes. I highly recommend these as "the" thing to try here. My kids ordered a pizza to split, my husband got vegetarian burrito, and I tried the chicken tacos. I also felt adventurous and ordered a Mai Tai... OK, it was the biggest, strongest drink I have ever received at a restaurant, no joke. That's not to say it was bad-- oh contraire, this was a truly delicious Mai Tai made with the yummy rum, not that cheap junk. It was fabulous... but size-wise it was the equivalent of like 3-4 mai tai's. I was completely tipsy after drinking half, so I had to stop drinking at that point. Thankfully the non-drinking hubby drove! Next time we are in town without the kiddies, I definitely know where to go for cheap and fabulous drinks ($7!!!) though. Now for the food: the pizza was great. Puffy crust with tons of big air bubbles (love them) and slightly charred from the wood fire over. Very tasty! We all agreed we would order pizza next time. My tacos were odd-- they were very good and flavorful, but they came with cabbage. I guess I expected cold, raw cabbage like one gets on tacos from taco trucks, but they actually sauteed the cabbage so it was warm and very soft. While it tasted fine, it wasn't necessarily how I envisioned it would be and the warmth and softness kind of turned me off? I just prefer fresh raw cabbage to counter the spiced meat on my tacos so it's probably just a preference thing. My husband felt the same about the sauteed cabbage on his dish, but other than that, he was very satisfied. This place could work on greeting its customers better when there is a wait, but otherwise, I think it's super cute and they are a hardworking family whom I'm happy to give my business to next time I visit. Check them out and order some good pizza! :)

As a father of three children I was very pleased with the kid friendly atmosphere and the helpful wait staff. The pizza was very tasty and a large pizza could easily feed a family of 6. The only downside was the unsteady table that we sat at. I would recommend this establishment to anyone and we will definitely plan on coming again on our next vacation.

I live locally, so I had high hopes for this place. The server was nice, but she didn't refill my water, I hag to get up and find her to ask for a to go box, and then again for the check. Pros: *The lettuce was fresh *The kids macaroni was a good sized portion, but needed seasoning. *The Knots were very good. Cons: *The marinara sauce served with the Knots is served cold. When dripping warm bread into cold sauce it is off putting. *The beef tacos looked way better than they tasted. The rice is not good and the black beans are probably canned. *They served each persons food as it was done, so our daughter ate her entire meal before I got mine. I appreciate that she got her food warm, but we came to eat together. *It took 35 minutes for me to get an order of Knots and artichoke dip. This place should make the menu more cohesive, too many different types of foods for them to do any well. It was just OK. Not bad at all, just not great. When I eat out I like to have the food to be a notch above what I can do at home or bring down the price! Sadly, I could make a better taco and rice. The stars are because it looked clean inside. The waitress was nice, but in the back too much. The food looked really good. I wish it tasted as Good as it looked. Maybe using organic meats and veggies could justify the price and increase the flavor! I'm local, and I don't think I'll go back. I'm sure the large number of tourists will keep them in business. If they were better, us locals would keep them busy in the winter.

I absolutely loved this place. Each person I was with ordered something completely different: falafel gyro, three cheese pasta, and yellow curry. Normally I am hesitant to eat at a restaurant with so many different types of food served because one is usually good and the other types are lacking. This was not the case with Savory. Each dish was delicious and relatively authentic. We also ordered the garlic buds - yum! So fresh, hot, and steamy. So the food was amazing, but the service was great as well. Our waitress was friendly, patient (it took us forever to decide because there were so many vegetarian options), and attentive. The entire restaurant was humming with a quiet and content feeling. The tables were spacious, the wall murals were pretty to look at, and the overall atmosphere was quite enjoyable. I would highly recommend it, especially for someone who is always disappointed by a lack of vegetarian, vegan, or gluten free options.

This was a great stop for lunch. We had the 1/2 sandwich and clam chowder. Fresh baked bread for the sandwich was delicious! We both actually received full sandwiches and just figured that was their 1/2. When we got the bill we learned differently. But they gladly corrected this for us. Would definitely go there again.

We made poor plans for valentine's day and ended up here for takeout. Restaurant was not that busy. We walked up and we're able to talk to somebody right away. She gave us a menu and then walked away after that is when it went wrong. 5-10 minutes passed and she hadn't returned yet, ok can let that slide. We ordered a sandwich and hummus appetizer and sat at the counter waiting for our food. Sitting there we were able to watch the restaurant operate and it was very clear that there was no organizational system what so ever, I am talking chaos, basically the three people working running every which way trying to keep up, nobody really in charge. Now 45 mins later we finally got my sandwich and went back to our room. It was just average nothing special. The chips and hummus were fine, again nothing special. The issue was it took an hour to get a sandwich. Putting an experienced person in charge and maybe add an extra server would solve that.

I don't rate service, ambiance, cleanliness and wait times; they are too variable. I can put up with anything if the food is good. It is all about the food- that's it. All of my ratings are based on vegan options only. Notes: This is one of those places where your excited there are vegan options, and then you eat the food and realize they know nothing about vegan cooking or how to prepare tofu. Almost gave them 3 stars for sauce flavor, but it had the consistency of water. My rice floating around in it was not good. Disappointing for over $10. I wouldn't come back.

We stumbled upon this place after driving in circles and were pleasantly surprised by the excellent pizza and delicious Mai Tais. The staff (Bruce, our server) was very friendly and the place had a nice casual Hawaiian style atmosphere. We'll come back here for sure next time we visit Newport!

I dig this place but they need to complete the vibe by putting some music on instead of that dang tv that's always blaring. How about some reggae or island music? The food is good, the menu creative and full. The vibe is warm, but for the awkward quiet and the loud tv that nobody but the owner watches.

When hunting for real food that is Gluten Free, The Savory Cafe & Pizzeria has it AND they know their stuff! The Fish Toco's were amazing, they have GF beer, and the GF chocolate dessert was heaven! Wish we were staying in Newport longer!:(

Every time we come in, we have a new experience, and leave happy. The service is laid-back but welcoming and personal. The food is well crafted, and the menu has something to please herbivore and omnivore alike. The sauces are the star here. The ingredients are quality, and the cooking is skilled, but the sauces sing. I would love to offer tips on the best choice to order, but I fall in love with something new every time. Be adventurous. I have been, without regrets!

Restaurant seems confused as to what they are going for. Name makes you think Italian but it seems like the owner wants to be in Hawaii. We ordered a "combo" pizza, the crust was awesome but did have large pieces of bell pepper that were barely warm. We also ordered an antipasto salad for 9.50, by the description and that it was under Salads not appetizers we expected a SALAD! Instead we ended up with a plate with 5 romaine leaves, a stack of pepperoni, salami, mozzarella balls, chopped olives, and drips, yes drips, not a drizzle, of balsamic vinegar on the build-it-yourself salad. Not to mention all of this was swimming in water that had drained off the romaine. The real reason I'm giving this 2 stars is because the owner sits on a stool watching the waitresses not sure if it is creepy or micro management. Then throwing his two cents in across the room to the tables. He also made it a point to go ask the only other party there how their meals were and completely by passed us.

A great, relatively new find, down in historic Nye beach. The proprietors are very friendly, they're pouring great beer, and it's a great spot to watch a game. For me at least, the food was not quite my speed. Anytime I see a big list of disparate items (e.g., thai style edamame, fresh mozz plate, mezz plate), I feel put off. Hubs and I tried the antipasti, and were disappointed as it seemed to contain only pizza toppings such as very thinly sliced and stuck together pepperoni and salami, a couple of pepperoncinis, and some mozzerella. It was definitely not what we were expecting. Maybe we should have gone veg? However, the fun ambience, great staff, and presence of cable-ized sports, will definitely bring us back--at least for beer!

I don't understand the 4 and 5 star reviews for this place. Ate here recently during a trip to Newport, and it was just nasty. The high point was the pizza, which was extremely generic. We got an appetizer plate with roasted garlic (tiny garlic buds, barely any garlic in them) and sun-dried tomato, which turned out to be leathery dried tomato disks right out of the bag (the oil-soaked ones might have made a bit more sense). We also had "savory rice bowls" which were nearly indedible (we ate them because we were hungry) and a "catch of the day" fish filet (gummy and cold by the time it got to our table). To top it off, I had severe intestinal distress a few hours after eating dinner (I'll spare you the details). There are so many other places to eat in Newport, I don't know why anyone would eat here.

The bottom line: if I could give them 3.5 stars I would. The pros: multiple options for vegetarians and vegans. The artichoke dip was better than I had anywhere else. The service was very pleasant. The setting is quite inviting and we enjoyed sitting here. The cons: we had the savory bowl, which was not very good at first (perhaps because we tried to deconstruct and put it in another plate). Luckily we took it with us and after it marinated for a bit it became quite a bit better. The same goes for the pizza with white sauce and garlic. For some reason the leftovers were much better the next day.

I admit that I have only eaten here once and only had a salad and pizza. I can't comment on the other food selections at this place. The salad was decent - I have no complaints. The lettuce was fresh and crispy, which is always a salad win. The pizza was okay. It was nothing that wow'd me, but it was good. One big plus about this place is that it served GLUTEN-FREE crust (for those that are gluten-sensitive). I'm not sure I would go back unless I was with a gluten-free friend who was hankering for some pizza.

Food was terrible!! Cool atmosphere but that's about it. Tasted like school cafeteria food!

I'll give it five stars because it has Veggie food in Newport, and the Pizza crust is amazing! Took a while to get our order, but it was worth the wait.

We liked this place. The area is nice, the inside is neatly decorated and clean, the owners/staff are very friendly, and the food is pretty good. I ordered the salmon pasta and the gf ordered pesto and they were both pretty good. Not the tastiest, but definitely not bad, especially for the price and location.

I can honestly say this is one of the best restaurants in Newport! The service is outstanding and the food exceeded my expectations! Reasonably priced for the quality as well, I'll be coming back to this place. I strongly recommend the salmon pasta!

This place was amazing from the start!! Walking into this place I was instantly nostalgic and home sick. The restaurant is all decked out in Hawaii memorabilia and their menu reads like it is a local Hawaii menu. There is Aloha Spirit walking every where in this place... First start with the strawberry li-hing margarita... Please just trust me! This is a traditional strawberry margarita with a flair adding li-hing powder. This is the ultimate candy in Hawaii! Just trust me you will love it!!! We also had 2 PuPu's (apps) that consisted of coconut shrimp and Roasted garlic with sun dried tomatoes, goat cheese, and some delish home made bread. The coconut shrimp was beyond my expectation!!! It came out 3 to a skewer lightly breaded (unlike what I am used to) and the orange sauce was sweet and delicate... The highlight of PuPu's was definitely the Roasted garlic plate... The 3 flavors are added by you so you are totally in control of how much you want of each. Anyway you concoct this you will be amazed at how the flavors melt in your mouth. Next we got a large half and half of Alii grinds (all meat) and margarita. Goodness this pizza was amazing! Flavors were on point and the crust was soft and thick... Perfect combo!!!! This place is a gem to find and I am definitely coming back before I leave the coast this weekend :). Aloha spirit all the way in Newport!!!! Get it!

This restaurant has some excellent options for vegans out of their expansive menu! They have this chipotle sauce that is copiously drizzled over their vegan chipotle burrito, and their vegan chipotle bowl. They also have really yummy tofu tacos. Makes for a filling meal. Yummmm.

The description on the menu of the Mexicali pizza had me excited. The pizza I waited 45 minutes for was a disappointment, though the dough had a good flavor. The cheesy garlic bread was pretty good. It came with a good supply of marinara sauce. Staff were vocal about being overwhelmed by an influx in business (spring break visitors). When I arrived to pick up my order, there were only 3 tables occupied, but I am happy for them to get a ton of business. I'd go back for the bread but not the pizza. Paninis Woodfire Oven makes better ones for $2 less.

We were staying in Newport for a week and wanted some food to take back to the house where we'd just arrived. I'd gotten take-and-bake pizzas from some of the chains in town on earlier trips, but wanted to patronize somewhere local this time. Yelp told me that place was the Savory Cafe. Yelp was wrong. It's not that the pizza was bad, as such. It was just really uninspiring. Really, really uninspiring. Like, even more uninspiring than a restaurant review that keeps repeating itself for emphasis. You know, the kind of review where you get the gist of it and then stop reading because it's uninspiring and move on? That's exactly how this pizza was. My family isn't the pickiest bunch, but we ended the week in Newport with half a pizza in the fridge. No one would finish it. People passed on the leftover pizza in order to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that weren't anything special themselves. My wife loves cold, leftover pizza for breakfast. But not this one. And, honestly, where does a local Oregon restaurant find tomatoes that are green in the middle in the middle of August?

Good food relatively cheap. Try the chili orange bowl. Best thing my wife and I ate on our 2 week vacation. Garlic knots were also excellent. I had the Greek wrap, also very good. Nice break from chowder and fish and chips.

My girlfriend and I stopped here for dinner. I ordered the Thai burrito; which was amazing. My better half ordered the Yellow curry, which was nothing short of terrible. She sent it back and ordered the fish tacos, which we we are still waiting for. Although the service from the waitstaff was outstanding, the kitchen was drowning something horrible.

Mike and the team at Savory Cafe are so nice, and the food is so great, I dare you to be disappointed! The pizza (especially the crust) is delicious! Have some jalapeno buds and a jalapeno Margarita while waiting for your pie! Pot du creme is perfect! Not too sweet. Please visit when you hit Nye beach, it is 100% worth it!

I was telling my friends about this place the other night, and realized that I forgot to write the yelp review that I promised myself that i'd write. I dropped by on the weekend of Newport Seafood and Wine fest about two years ago, and 6 of us went in for dinner. I liked it almost immediately, because the size of the tequila shots were crazy big and it was warm/dry inside. I got a little drunk and ordered a margarita pizza. It came to the table and it was pretty good, but the tomatoes were put on fresh/cold on the top. whatever, I can live with that. I ate it, it was alright. I went to the bathroom to let loose the damn, and on the way I saw the owner. I told her very politely (in a non-condescending tone) that margarita pizzas usually have cooked tomatoes on them. She told me to go fuck myself. The three stars are for the tequila.

Have numerous vegetarian, vegan, & gluten free options. My wife and I split the vegan burrito. It was very tasty. The sauce was made with tofu, kelp, fresh garlic & basil, & their "special seasoning packet"

Jalapeno margarita called my name here. Met an old friend for lunch. We both ordered the fish tacos to go along with our drinks. She ordered a mango margarita. They were huge and helpful in us catching up. The fish tacos were ling cod and they had been in some sort of sweet barbeque sauce which made the tacos even yummier. The place is decorated kind of surfer/Hawaiian and the owners are from Hawaii. The only thing missing was the sun.

We drive over from the valley just to eat here. We have an omnivore, vegetarian, and pescatarian - and 3 kids - in our family. We keep coming back because we all leave happy. Our favorites: Garlic nubs, pizza, and Thai burrito. Good food; great energy.

So I dug the atmosphere in this place, the food was good, but I'm taking one star off for the absolute space head that served us. She may have been toking on a pipe in the back room, though. Not sure. The menu is diverse, and the food was fresh and well made. I ordered up a caprese salad and it was good, fresh, and tasty. My friend ordered a pizza and reported it to be very good. So then there was what I would refer to as the case of the Cheesy Garlic Buds. We ordered some. The guys next to us sat down about 30 minutes after us, and were immediately served an order of Cheesy Garlic Buds, which they of course dug into. I don't blame them. About 15 minutes later, the waitress brought them Jalapeno Garlic Buds, which they said they didn't order. She returned to the kitchen and brought out a full pizza to the guy sitting outside, which he said he had ordered to go. She then returned to our table and brought me something else I didn't order, but I'm wondering if the table across the way did. I thought it rude to shout over the counter, so I simply said, yeah, this isn't mine. When she did return, we asked if we could have our Garlic Buds, and my friend mentioned that maybe they went to the guys next to us, who offered us their crumbs, and said, "yeah, we thought our order came out really fast!". Needless to say, the owner/manager was so busy watching Jeopardy and giving the wrong answers he didn't catch any of it. We were cool, and just hung out and finished our dinner. When we asked for boxes, a different gal came out with........drum roll please.....our Cheesy Garlic Buds. I thanked her and she said, "oh, they are comped." Which was nice, but unnecessary. I would totally go back here, because the food was good and catered to individual palates, including our vegan and vegetarian friends. Anyway, it would be fun to get my non-order and see if anyone else in the restaurant was eating my food.

Best pizza in Newport. Hands down. The crust has the perfect balance of chewy and crunchy. Baked on a brick, but not overdone. Generous amount of cheese and toppings. Came out piping hot, and not overly greasy either. I had pepperoni which had good flavor and was perfectly spicy. Savory is my place to go for pizza in Newport, hands down.

If you after a couple of "authentic" meals on the coast get tired of fish, clams, and chowder and just wants to eat something different, this is a nice little spot. The garlic cheese spuds are a must. The pizza was good (not fantastic, but I'd definitely eat it again). Very happy with the service and reasonable prices.

Absolutely LOVED this place! There was hardly anybody in there (I imagine it's busy in summer) and the owner/waiter was so friendly and nice. We started with a couple apps. You MUST try the cheesy garlic buds. I was skeptical, but they are to die for. We got the mozzarella plate too (fancy). For my main dish, I got the falafel sandwich with chips. Hit the spot. The menu is huge with lots of amazing variety. I wish there was a Savory Cafe where I live!

We just love this place! We are only in the area two or three times a year, but we are always treated like old friends. Love the margaritas! I happen to be vegetarian, and the chipotle tofu tacos are crazy good, but our omnivore friends love it, too. Can't go to the coast without at least one meal here!

The menu held so much promise. It was 2:30 on a Monday, summer afternoon. There were maybe only one or two other tables occupied. There appeared to be three people in the kitchen - plenty of busy noise coming from there. So how come it took 30 minutes to get soup and salad for my companion and a "savory" bowl of rice and vegetables? I know you're wondering what kind of idiots would wait around that long. The spinach salad was whole green leaves with stems still attached and crasins - totally unremarkable. The waitress was young and terrible. I also had to hunt her down in order to pay - and she was nowhere to be found. Fortunately there is a Tillamook ice creamery two doors down.

I've had two great meals here within the last ten days. First was the green curry bowl with tofu over brown rice--very tasty and just the right amount. (The plates are larger.) Today my hubby and I split a Greek Chicken Wrap and shared an appetizer of Edamame. And, again, very good. The service was quick, even though there were quite a number of diners there. I think they'll become ever more popular as word travels. Great job, Savory!

EXCELLENT food and service. When we were there they even had live music, an acoustic guitar player. We went looking for vegetarian/vegan restaurants while visiting the coast and found this. I ordered the black bean soup and roasted garlic appetizer, both were delish. My friend ordered the thai burrito with tofu instead of shrimp, and it was out of this world yummy. Had a couple of IPA, and a great time.

This place has decent GF pizza. It's open later than many places in town, or seems to be. Since this town is a lot less interested in making money than it is in closing at 6, it can be hard to know when things will actually be open. I tried a margherita pizza and a hawaiian, both were pretty good. I'd skip the shakes.
