I'm giving this place a 4 star because the food was amazing the horchata was delicious and the food came out super quick. You lost a star from me because your waitress was acting like she wanted to get us in and out as quick as possible if you were packed sure I work in the food service industry I understand, but she had 3 tables total it was dead. Waited 15 minutes for just chips that a different waiter brought us because I'm sure he saw I was getting irritated the salsa was amazing except I got like a quarter of a tomato one time still the taste was amazing so 20 minutes after we got our chips she came up and took our drink and food order at the same time (mind you this was the first time after seating us she said anything to us) then sped off and like I said food quick cook time and amazing. Then a stop and go for my card. It literally felt like she had 100 other tables to be at so hurry up you're wasting my time and again she had 3 and we were one of them. I will be back next time I visit newport but if the same lady seats us I will be asking for a different waiter

This was the worst Mexican food I've ever had. So incredibly BLAND. Living in Arizona, I'm used to decent Mexican food & this place was terrible. Our server was also taking her sweet time to come to our table as she was eating her dinner & staring at her cell phone. Mind you we were the only people in the place & now I know why.

This was not only the worst Mexican food I've ever had - it was HONESTLY the worst food I've ever eaten in my life. That's saying a lot, I've been through basic training. Not to mention I ordered tacos... How do you even make tacos that bad? I don't understand. I was seriously sitting there wishing I got Taco Bell instead. People giving this place 5 stars (or even 4 or 3 stars) have probably never had good Mexican food. If you have been to this location and you thought it was good - Mexican food gets so much better than this.. I went with a party of 8 people and no one enjoyed their meal. We specifically ordered a burrito with no beans for my 16 month old daughter so she wouldn't be gassy at night - Surprise! Beans. Save your money for somewhere deserving of it... or just eat your money instead, it'll taste better than the frozen garbage this place puts in the microwave.

I mean it wasn't spectacular but the food was good. The meal was hot and the service very good. I had a taco and my grandson had Mac and cheese. My husband had chili verde. I tried it and it was good! Enjoy!

My friend and I went to Mazatlan in Newport to try something new. We walked and and waited to be seated and finally we were seated. Our menus were rudely thrown on to the table the waitress, As she practically ran away. We waited a long time to get our order taken (we didn't know what the hold up was) and the waitress didn't great us at all just rudely asked "do you know what you want?" When we got our food we were very disappointed. My friends steak was bright red, and clearly way under cooked. Our waitress never checked on us, so we were stuck with this watery chicken a la creama, and that raw steak. Overall, don't go there, it's defiantly not worth the prices, or service.

I had a hard time trying to decide if I should have given two or 3 stars. Alas, the salsa won my heart and our waitress was friendly. Not so sure we will be back anytime soon. One of our dishes felt heavily reheated and the other was fairly okay. The establishment was clean and such. Newport seems to have a lack of Mexican eats so if you find yourself here take my advice and stick with chicken.

Not my fav ... waitress very unfriendly... had to litterally beg for more chips even though we paid $100 for dinner... ok food but damit waitress a smile and a little friendly would have been more welcoming. ..

A-OK is good, right? Right. Well-- so is Mazatlan Mexican Restaurant. Not great, spectacular, or take-your-breath-away awsome.... But it is good. And good Mexican food is hard to come by. Because I was at the dentist yesterday, my criteria for choosing lunch today was one word: soft. So I ordered a combo plate with a tamale and a cheese enchilada. It came with a generous side of orange rice (I've never figured out what it is about orange that makes it the optimum color for a Mex side-dish -- but it's the gold [orange] standard, isn't it?) Basically, it was just over-cooked rice that leaned orange. There was also a generous side of refried beans, which were much like all other refried beans; and a big scoop of very good guacamole. The tamale was a long way from the tamales I'm used to -- very large pile of filling surrounded by masa. LOTS of masa. The balance was off -- waaaaay too much masa for the filling. But the filling alone was fine, and the masa was mushy enough that it was easy to extricate the porky goodness from it's smothering of masa and -- I suspect -- lard. If it wasn't lard, it should have been. The masa itself was unseasoned, so when applied to the filling, it diluted what seasoning was there -- making the whole a bit bland. But -- as I said, the filling alone was fine. The cheese enchilada, however, was excellent. It was filled with enough cheese to be tasty, with a bit more melted on top along with some chili-ish sauce. Add a bit of their table salsa, and it was a very good cheese enchilada.. Nothing on the plate was greasy -- always a good sign. And, the table salsa had a nice afterburn of heat on the tongue. Husband confirmed that his chicken taquitos were tasty and had plenty of chicken. Good lunch. I'm still on my search for some really really REALLY great Mexican food -- but until it shows up -- I can live with good. :D

Food was mediocre, kind of disappointing since I ordered Carne asada. Service was neglectful, she did not come back to check on us after our first drink, and ended up asking for the check instead of drinking more. Only positive was the pomegranate margarita, which was excellent.

Really? This is a Mexican restaurant? Really? I'm white, and not even I'm convinced. My friend who I went with is Mexican, however, and she said even El Toritos or Chevys would have been more authentic. -1: They didn't have steak or carne asada. Only pulled or ground beef. Is this taco bell?! -2: My tamale was broken apart. I've never been served a tamale that was inside out like this was. -3: The server was rude. She was very impatient with us as we asked questions about the menu. -4: No black beans. -5: The price was not worth the portion. Screw this place. I should have Yelped it first.

Worst place I have ever been too the service was so horrible I'm actually mad at myself for not walking out. I will never go here again nor will I recommend it. I am going to review it on every site possible to try and warn people off! Choosing to go here for valentines day ruined our night. seriously don't make the mistake we made unless you are looking for THE WORST SERVICE EVER!!! they are RUDE RUDE RUDE!!

  • Tarah R.

Worst food ever rotting lettuce dirty tasting fajitas taste like teriyaki they say they have a full bar yet they don't even know what jagermeister is? Which whatever but Atleast don't lie about what you serve and the food is just god awful!!!!! I'm extremely dissapointed and mad I had to spend money here!!!

My first clue of how things to come was an EMPTY restaurant on a Saturday at 1 p.m. Then comes the food. Carne Asada burrito. The meat tasted & had the texture of canned meat. Beans were fine. When food is buried under a mound of lettuce & such you know they're trying to hide the actual food. Now let's review my husband's Chili Relleno! Scrambled egg w/a green chili in the middle. Literally. I was stunned. You can't fool someone who grew up on the border of Mexico & spent her life in Arizona! My husband told me I should've asked to use the kitchen to make our food! The waitress came to our table 3 times. Take the order, bring the food & give us the check. Remember we were the ONLY ones in there! Service should've been 5-star! Keep driving eat at McD's at least you'll save a bundle of $$$.

  • Jeffrey L.

If you're looking for good Mexican food, I would advise you to keep looking... The food was OK, but below average for the price, and our waitress brought the wrong order to 2 out of 4 people at our table. And she speaks English quite well.

Uneventfull and boring. Place looks like it came out of a 1980's cafe from Texas. Decor was bland and no even and cha-cha mexican music going in the background. Food was priced like all the other Mazatlans. Girlfriend was not happy with the place. If you want average then this is not the place.

    (3)
  • Carrie A.

I don't know what we were thinking, trying this "Mexican" place on the Oregon coast. It's pretty much what any reasonable person might have expected: bland, greasy, expensive. Whoever pegged the decor as "1980s Texas diner" was probably about right.

  • Dana P.

I've read some of the reviews. Am not sure if the management is better or what but I could not have been happier. Absolutely delicious chips, salsa, burritos (meat was off the hook). The date I brought had equal excitement over the taste of the meat and we each tried the other, mine beef hers chicken. Was so delicious and a huge portion with gravy and cheese on top just how I like it. I had a Del Negro to boot (and probably gained 5 lbs). Really good price for the giant portion and the service was laid back, totally friendly and cool. So it gets 5 stars from me. If I was lucky, sobeit then it was 5 stars that day. A 5 star place for me is one where you get bang for the buck, the food is delicious and the service really good. So there it is. Btw they do have carne asada to contrast with another reviewers statement.. UPDATE: 11/26/14 Had the carne asada just after posting above review. Was so delicious. Had as much as I could eat, a huge workout then sleep. Woke up and ate the rest for breaktast- still could not finish. Not bad for $14. If I go to Sizzler with $14 I get half the size of the steak with lots less flavors. The rice and beans, guacamole with tortillas- all good. Service was fine, I just picked up and left with take out.

  • Dave C.

Reading some of the other reviews and I must say I am surprised. It also makes me question did I just stop by on a good day, or where their expectations too high? Like many of their customers, I was in town for the aquarium and we decided to stop by on a spur of the moment. We expected just your average, run of the mill Mexican/American place and that was what we received. The service was fine, the server was friendly, the food was good and the price was what you would expect. I enjoyed it and I would return if I lived in the area.

    (3)

The food was good. A little american- but hey I like that too, so all in all it was a good experience. If I ever make it back up this way, I would come back.

You're driving the Pacific Coast Highway . The kids are screaming from the back seat, the wife is sending you glares out of the corners of her almond eyes, her arms folded across her ample chest. Better get the fam some food before you hit the Oregon Coast Aquarium or you'll be sorry, mister. There are no surprises here: Mazatlan delivers the Mexifood we all know and love. The tacos, enchiladas and burritos will be exactly what you excpect and enjoy. They'll delight you with sombreros on the walls, cheesy Mexi-music piped overhead, even cheesier than the watered-down refritos. The rice will be a touch oily and a touch bland, but you'll love it all, gobble it all down and be so satisfied. The kids'll shut up for forty minutes and the Missus may grab your ass on the way out. Can you put a price on that? This typical Mexican joint differs from others in three ways: the ground beef's a bit greasier (read: yummier), the service is super-friendly and the salsa is fan-freaking-tastic - could live on that for a day or two.

    (3)
  • MISTY L.

Not the best food, and the staff is nice not overly friendly goes something like this " what can get you" "ok thanks" and walks off brings the food and leaves the check no words. Never returns. Food was okay again not over the top.

I was in town with the family for a mini vacation and we choose mazatlan because there weren't a whole lot of options and we'd eaten at the chain in Portland and liked it fairly well. Service was good but not spectacular. The food was mediocre. My boyfriend and I both ordered the carne asada and both spent more time cutting it than eating it. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this place and next time we are at the coast, we'll definitely be eating somewhere else.

There's a Mazatlan on every corner on the coast, so I usually end up eating here at least once whenever I spend a weekend at the beach. It's always hard to review places that are not geared toward vegans, so full disclosure that I'm only reviewing the vegan options (which means ordering something on the menu minus a bunch of ingredients). For all I know, this could be the best, most authentic Mexican food around. What I like about Mazatlan: bottomless chips & salsa and friendly/accommodating service. The servers are always willing to substitute/remove ingredients and humor us out-of-town vegans, even though we probably seem ridiculous when we're trying to order. I think there's really only one menu item that can be made vegan, the veggie burrito, which is basically a tortilla with veggies in it, beans on the side, and some enchilada sauce. When eating at Mazatlan, I always joke that I'll be having the beans in a tortilla with beans on the side and a side of beans. Basically, it's a lot of beans and not much else. But that's ok-- it gets the job done and I don't expect a small coastal restaurant to have a full vegan menu.

Since my family has a beach house in Newport, I really wanted to like this place since our family loves Mexican food. I went so far as to overlook the crappy exterior, and ignore the not so good interior, but alas, it was not to be. This place is not the worst Mexican restaurant I've ever been to, but it definitely ranks near the bottom. Do yourself a favor and skip this place, because it pretty much sucks.
