Name your establishment Chowder Bowl? You'd better have some darn good chowder. And you know what? THEY DID! Delicious. I'm fairly picky when it comes to my clam chowder based on a place in W.Seattle that served up award winning chowder. And this, my friends, was awe. some. By the way, the service is friendly and efficient. According to my bill, we were served by Jennifer and she was suh-weet! We got to pick our own table (which I always love). And this is definitely one of the cleaner fish/chips/chowder places I've been to. My coconut shrimp with chips (they're really chip shaped fried potatoes) were super tasty and came with a piece of yummilicious buttered toast. My wife enjoyed her shrimp tacos (special of the day). If I lived in Newport, I'd be a regular. Be sure to eat here if you're in the area!

Honestly, have been so disappointed at this place! We visited on a long weekend this December (2012), and had chowder and the fried platter. Chowder was merely ok! I thought even my office cafeteria makes better chowder. If you call yourself chowder house, and I had to wait 20 minutes for a table, then I do expect at least a much better chowder. Fried cod did not please us either. The batter did not have any spice, tartar sauce was not great either. We had four meals in Newport, and all places I went to, had better food. If you are looking for one single meal at Newport, seafood at that, I highly recommend Local Ocean Seafood - you will miss something great if you do not eat there. Avoid this one.

I've only been here once, so this may get some tweeking later, but I really enjoyed my first experience though. The place had a cozy feel and the service was friendly. I had a burger and my wife had a bowl of chowder. The chowder was great as well as the burger. We were both quite satisfied and full at the end of our meal and the prices seemed fitting. Not a great deal, but definitely not getting robbed. Sorry this is only a simple review, but I was satisfied enough to make sure to write one.

We almost went to Local Ocean Seafood but it was so packed that we decided to come here instead. It turned out to be a good choice. The Chowder Bowl was also very busy (on a Monday around 7:00 pm), but we were seated right away and our sever came and took our drink order within a couple of minutes. We had the fried calamari - crunchy and fresh, not frozen - a smoked salmon wrap (yumm!), and a Caesar salad with cups of clam chowder plus a beer. All were delicious, though I took the pat of butter out of my chowder before it melted. Our server checked back with us twice and brought the check and to-go box promptly. $37 + tip. I'd go back!

I went here with high expectations after other Yelpers' recommendations. The chowder was pretty good, better than Mo's West but not as good as at Rogue Ales Bayfront, surprisingly -- it was under-seasoned and didn't have many clams. The fried shrimp was bland -- not bad, better than school paste, but I wouldn't order them again. Those cool looking fries the size and shape of a quarter tasted like, well, fries. Service was good, but the price seemed high for mediocre food in a diner atmosphere. Three clam chowders in two days and I'm bummed. Where's the good stuff?

My family and I ate a late lunch today. The location is conveniently located above Nye Beach, and there were plenty of open tables when we arrived. My husband had a burger and a cup of chowder, both of which he liked. I scoured the menu for something not fried, and it took a while to find my choice. Most of the menu consists of fried fish and creamy soups so I settled on a shrimp salad, which was decent but not outstanding. My kids both ordered chicken strip meals but they did not include drinks (bummer), and there was no fruit nor veggie option with their meals. That being said, would I eat here again? Possibly. Would I rank it high on my list of places to eat in Newport? Nope. Would other people enjoy it? If you enjoy chowder and fish & chips? Definitely.

Excellent Clam Chowder which is why we go when we are in Newport. Fish and Chips good as the fish is really good. Chips bring down the dish though, bland, no seasoning and need to be cooked a bit more. Might consider coleslaw with the dish though as it's served with cut/dry cabbage with is kind of a bizarre garnish. Consider a few non-fried options as well. Otherwise, all is well.

Had lunch today and we ordered more than we intended. We were planning on having a bowl of chowder but decided that we would also split an order of calamari. The chowder was definetly a hit served with a melting slab of butter. Very rich and creamy and not too thickened. It had the right amount proportion of potato to clam. The calamari was done to perfection. Just right, not overdone or underdone. Very crispy and without the slightest hint of grease.

Every time we come here, we get more and more convinced Chowder Bowl has THE BEST clam chowders. If you can't decide on what to order, try the sampler plate - which served my wife, daughter, and me for dinner. Delectable!

Went here with a group of 7 people, and they were very accommodating. everyone was friendly and helpful. Our waiter was very good at his job, knowledgeable, engaging, efficient and polite. I had the seafood feast, basically, everything in it, with a side of clam chowder, and almost everything was very tasty. I say almost because I wasn't a fan of their chips. Or fries. It's potatoes fried like french fries but shaped like a chip. Not too flavorful at all, in fact I'm going to go ahead and call it what it is, bland. But everything else was good. Some of our group had the cob salad, and it was a small sink sized, very good dressing too. I forgot the name, but it was recommended by our waiter and it was worth it. I and my friends will definitely come back here again, and I highly recommend this place to anyone who's hungry and is near the beach.

We all were craving seafood and so I turned to Yelp and boy, Yelp didn't disappoint me again. After reading some good reviews, we went to this place in late evening (8pm) and this place is open until 9pm the night we were here. The CHOWDER is to die for, I would say that I'm a chowder fan so I've had chowder in lots of places and this has to be one of the best chowder ever, very creamy and just to die for. If you're in the area, you have to try this place. Very good portions, very fast and friendly wait staff and the price is what you would expect seafood dinner would cost (low to mid $ teens).

Chowder bowls! My dad ate it up...I had tacos... fish..they were nothing to write home about but they were shrimp chipolte which was good..way too much cabbage... It was cute.....

They've been around since 1980, but I've heard that new owners took over within the past two years or so. Either way, there's been a steady improvement in quality of food and service recently that makes this place a must stop on your trip to Newport. Everything I've eaten there has been just as promised. Nothing fancy, but good ingredient and service with a smile. One final note: I'da given this joint a solid 4 stars, but last time I was there they put cheese on my fish taco. Seriously. Cheddar!

We came here after the sea lion cave. Starving and in much need of some soup to warm the soul we decided on the Chowder Bowl. The place had a decent crowd, even with the emptiness of what I assume is mostly a summer destination. Immediately, I noticed that the service was incredibly friendly. Especially the waiter who wears a ballcap. He was so nice to everyone! I think it's an Oregon thing. I started with the navy bean soup and my dad had the clam chowder. I loved my navy bean soup, although the beans seemed a tad small. I snuck a bite of my dad's clam chowder, and it was so good! I can see why they are called Chowder Bowl. Then came our lunches. We had the shrimp Louie salad, the 2 lbs of clams, and the coconut shrimp. All serving were plentiful, and I loved that they served the British chips over fries with the coconut shrimp. The salad is huge! Overflowing with shrimp and fresh avocado. The clams were incredibly tasty as well. And though I didn't get to sample the coconut shrimp, my mom devoured them almost immediately. Their dessert selections looked really good as well. Too bad all of were full. Just a note, all clams are locally sourced as well as oysters from what I remember.

Always consistent, always great food. The fish and chips are not greasy, and generous portions. Best place to eat on the Oregon coast. If your in Newport Oregon, drive down to Nye Beach, and treat yourself to Chowder Bowl. You will be very happy you did.

Super fresh fish and chips. Very tasty garlic bread. Great service. Yummy chowder! Would definitely go there again!

The first time we went we decided to share a cup of clam chowder and I had the shrimp and chips and my husband had the fish and chips. The clam chowder was to dye for, the shrimp and chips was delish and so was the Fish and chips. The chips were not French fries, but medallion shaped potatoes fried and very good. Service was good it can get very crowded so go when they open at 11:30 so you don't have to what for a table.

  • Sara T.

This place was pretty good. The chowder was good and the fish sandwich I had was fantastic. The servers were so nice. They didn't even mind that I stayed reading for a little while after I was finished eating. The atmosphere is definitely coastal and very family friendly. Overall I really liked this place and will be back again.

Delicious food. Friendly Service. Great location but hard to find unless you know where to look. The chowder was very good (as you hoped it would be). A good crowd of locals and tourists.

Oregon is my home state and the Chowder Bowl has always been a favorite for my family. I moved away when I was 14. Now I am 23 and my mom moved back to Newport, Oregon. My husband and I helped her move from California to Newport and the first thing I wanted to do when we got there was eat at the Chowder Bowl. I am pleased to say that this place is still really yummy. All of their food is fresh. I really appreciate their good seafood since it's hard to get good seafood in El Dorado County. We were there 3 days and I ate at the Chowder Bowl all 3 days (there's not a lot of places to eat in Newport). I love their clam chowder, steamed clams, calamari, clam fritters, and fish and chips. They also have local beer from Toledo which is really good. The first day we ate there the place was packed. I was prepared for a long wait. To my surprise, we stood there for less than a minute when a cook came out of the kitchen and told us he would make sure to find a table for us. He went and set up a table in the corner and we were seated promptly. This place has friendly staff and prompt service. Every time I go back to Newport I will be eating at the Chowder Bowl!

I got a fish sandwich that was 2 battered fish, lettuce, on a bun, and with a side of cole slay. the sandwich was really good. The raspberry was amazing! The "chips" are diffrent than any other chips I've had, they're flat instead of regular french fries as chips.

Don't waste your time or money. Very bland food , overpriced for what you get, the only thing good is that the wait staff Is friendly.

We really enjoyed our dinner. The chowder was wonderful. The oysters were also delicious. Large children portion for children.

I really like this place! Our group of six enjoyed everything we ordered, including the clam chowder, the fried shrimp, the fish tacos, the garlic-onion-cheese bread, and the homemade marionberry cobbler. The decor is nothing special, but the food was tasty, the service was solid, and the location is good -- in the Nye Beach area, near a bunch of cool shops.

Had the sourdough chowder bread bowl. The chowder was a bit bland with not much clam meat in it.

I've heard that Chowder Bowl has replaced Mo's as the place to go for chowder. I don't care about chowder, but I figured it would translate to good seafood. We walked in here and were pleasantly greeted by a server that told us to sit anywhere. Someone came in behind us and took a table in the same room. The same guy that greeted us told us that our waitress would be with us soon as he went to help the woman that came in behind us. He also was the waiter for every other table in the room we were in (all consisting of just women except one). Our waitress was good and I was happy with her. I just thought it was odd that she seemed to be covering a different room but he made her serve us. The food was okay. Nothing special. My boyfriend had the chowder and said it was, in fact, very good. I had a salad instead. It was about what I expected, out of a bag bad salad, even though it was $4.95 vs. his $3.50 cup of chowder. Certainly not worth the price. We both had fish and chips and both agreed that while they were well breaded and well cooked, they lacked any kind of flavor. Just a little salt during and/or after cooking would have made it really good. As it was, it was just okay. There are too many seafood restaurants in Newport to go back here again. If it were the only one in town, sure, I'd go back, but not when there are other great options. Even Mo's in its downward spiral is probably better.

  • Ronald A.

We ordered dinner out; it was fine, but no more than that. The shrimp was a bit over done and the clams were a bit under done. The clam chowder was fine, but nothing special. This is a good place for good, but not spectacular food. The staff was both friendly and very helpful.

My favorite place to eat chowder in Newport. Then go walk off what you eat on the beach. :)

    (4)
  • Scott W.

VASTLY overrated. We should have listened to the warnings to that effect. Really, this is mediocre seafood. The clam chowder is worth having if you do ignore such advice. The fish and chips are not. The breading is unusual and not great, and the chips are barely passable. Make the drive down to Salty Dawg in Waldport instead for better everything, including much better chowder and very good fish and chips.

  • Mr. B.

The taste of the Fish and Chips was alright, despite the fact the the Cod was breaded and unsalted. The chips/fries were circles of golden fried goodness, just like I'd always always imagined. The mate's order (small) was randomly served with garlic bread. Even though I enjoyed it, garlic bread with Fish and Chips?

    (4)
  • Chester I.

Damn good chowder. Too bad they don't have the "bottomless bowl of chowder and salad bar" on the menu anymore.

What a great detour! We were planning dinner at another place in town, but didn't care for the atmosphere. This place was a gem! The atmosphere at Chowder Bowl is nothing elegent - just pleasant. Food - best clam chowder we have ever had - and we've had some excellent chowder in Boston. Also, exceptionally friendly staff, who also provided some very helpful guidance about things to see in town.

We try to go here every time we are at the coast. The chowder is really tasty and leaves Mo's in the dust (Mo's is really pasty in comparison). We had great service today from an enthusiastic waiter. The fish and chips were cooked perfectly, and even the chips were flavorful (not sure what they do differently). Wife had the chili which had good spice and flavor. Then... the bread pudding with brandy sauce!!! God that stuff is good. Overall, I highly recommend trying it out. It is at Nye Beach just down a bit from the popular and odd Sylvia Beach hotel (big green place with rooms decorated to match various authors genre. The Poe room is cool!) It can get really busy right around the standard lunch and dinner times, so maybe go a while before or after.

We stopped here on a rainy December day, and Chowder Bowl was perfect. Their clam chowder is buttery and rich, and the seafood platter is plenty of delicious, fresh seafood for two people to share. The clams were particularly good, and I'm not even a fan of clams. My only complaint was that the fried calamari rings were a bit on the chewy side, but they were still good. The service is very good, the servers friendly, and the setting quaint and comfortable. I'll definitely come back, especially for the chowder, next time I'm in Newport.

Very delicious coconut shrimp! Highly recommend! Good fish too!

They let you order off the child's menu. I ordered the child's Halibit fish and chips.. It was great and just the right amount. One fairly large battered Fish filet and some wonderful fried potato rounds. My Husband ordered the sourdough clam chowder bowl and I admit I had a few bites and it was delicious.

  • Dan S.

Seems like I'm giving out a lot of five star ratings, but this restaurant definitely deserves it. Not only because of the amazing coconut encrusted shrimp, but the tip top service. Dined here late one rainy evening with my family as we debated alternate plans to camping out in the storm. Our waiter offered a suggestion to a pet friendly hotel that has affordable prices and pet friendly rooms. We drove straight there and that motel was fabulous! Wish I was in Newport right now for more of that shrimp!

Fried Clams or Fish and Chips, Clam Chowder, and the Steamers are all I can comment on because that's all I ever order. The Steamers are a particular favorite. You get a lot of clams swimming in a succulent, buttery broth, a cup of chowder and a big hunk of toasted garlic bread. Take someone to lunch one rainy day and order a 2nd cup of chowder ala cart. You'll drop only around $21 (no drinks) for a yummy, filling meal that will warm you up from the inside out. The food has proven to be consistently above par, but not the service. If you're seated in the section with the big table (seats 10), and it's full, chances are 50 / 50 you'll feel neglected. There are only a couple of old pros that can juggle the demands of serving so many at once. Otherwise the service gets a bit iffy with forgotten sides and drink refills and watching your food chill as you wait for others at your table to get theirs. If you go a little before or after the rush hours, you have the best chance of receiving 5 star food and service.

I won't say it's one of those places I will go back and have again and again. The chowder is solid - a little too potato-e for me and not enough clams, but the flavor is top notch. Is it worth the extra $5 to have it in a bread bowl? My husband said YES though I disagreed with him. The sourdough bread bowl was SOFT, not hard and crusty like most places, which is a HUGE plus. We had the seafood fried plate (can't remember what it's actually called) and for $19, I think you're getting what you paid for. It's big. Our family of four (our little kids are 7 and 3) ate that plate with the bread bowl clam chowder, and we were relatively satisfied. The fish was great. The chilled shrimps were a nice change from all that fried stuff. I wasn't crazy about the batter. Wasn't crispy at all, though it has a nice flavor to it. I love the atmosphere and the service - our waitress was great and we never felt neglected. Parking, BTW, was HORRID. All these one-way streets were crazy for this OC girl. We were there definitely during the height of the vacation/tourist season. Lots of fun shops to look in and shop at, and that's what made the parking extremely difficult to find. I'd definitely try something else in the area next time. There appears to have lots and lots of offers (for example, Cafe Stephanie looked posh and cute and their menu was adorable). This place wasn't so fantastic that I'm just aching to come back.

We eat here at least once every time we come to Newport because we know we can always get a great bowl of chowder or plate of fish and chips! The food is consistently delicious and the service excellent! Highly recommend.

  • Sara G.

We ate here because the guy at the front desk of our hotel (a local himself) recommended it for good clam chowder. He was right... we really enjoyed the soup and the rest of the meal was ok. Stay away from the fried green beans, they were overcooked and tasted like they sat around for awhile. In their defense, we arrived near closing time and they served us with smiles and did not rush us out of there.

We ate on our trip to Newport. I was very pleased with the Slumgolian Chowder! It was one of the best chowders I have had and they even added fresh shrimp to it! It was amazing! I will probably go back today and get some to take home! I highly recommend Chowder Bowl to anyone wanting a perfect bowl of chowder! Yum Yum!!

  • David L.

Great fish and chips, great chowder but get one or the other unless you are really hungry. Good service. Very friendly staff and quick service. The decor is fairly simple but clean and pleasant. After lunch you can walk down to stroll on the beach just a couple blocks away.

We asked friends where to go to eat lunch in Newport and they all said Chowder Bowl. They were right, the place is very good, plus we like Nye Beach to hang out. Overall everything was good. The service as fair, they took orders from people that came in 5-10 minutes after us, while we just sat there w/o anything, no water, no beverage, just ignored. There was about 20 - min wait to get in, but that just shows how popular they are... Gotta get Chowder at the Chowder Bowl, very good, great flavor, would 100% recommend it! The butter on top... = arteries clogging goodness. My wife had 1/2 shrimp sandwich and I had the fried clam sandwich. Both were very good. The prices are fair considering what they are serving and popularity of the place. The water however was very open and friendly and treated us well. I do like adding the lemon to the pepsi, it makes a difference. Overall, we would go back w/o question and recommend the place. The only negative we had was being ignored for about 10-15 min in the corner.

  • Montrew N.

Chowder was great, especially in the bread bowl. They really scraped all, I mean all, of the bread out! So you got tons of chowder and yummy bread. Clams were plentiful. very classic. We went for dinner and had no trouble getting in but we were fairly early. Waiter was quick and friendly and energetic. Great local beer the Twisted Snout. I think the entrees were just ok, standard fried fish fare. The best of the scallops, shrimp and fish and chips was the fish and chips. Very fresh.

  • Steve P.

If you're going to set foot into Chowder Bowl, go for what it's name suggests. Get. The. Chowder! It is amazing, hearty and thick with tangible pieces of clam not outstaged by the potato. On a cold wintry day on Nye Beach, I have to believe this place is swarming. My sister was pleasantly surprised by their chili, which has the right ratio of beans to meat, and has a slightly sweet flavor. She swears she's getting it again. Their garlic bread is well worth an order! Chowder Bowl has a nice array of foods, but many of them are of the (Seafood) and Chips variety. I had the fried oysters and found them fresh and very tasty. Next time, I'm going for the scallops, a special. For dessert, try their cobbler. Excellent. The service is quirky, and I mean that in the most complimentary way possible.

  • S.M. S.

I do not like to give bad reviews but the service was so terrible it's hard to be happy with my experience. Our food came out cold so it was difficult to know whether it would have been good if served correctly. Hopefully our experience was just due to a bad waiter and not the restaurant itself.

  • Adrienne H.

Went there for dinner this evening and I got the clams and chips. It was ok, the clams were huge but not much of a taste even though it was chewy. The chips were good. Nothing really to write home about.

  • Erik L.

We came here based on the reviews, and perhaps it was a little more hyped than necessary. We ordered two bowls of chowder, the mahi mahi and chips, and the clam strips and chips. (Side note: clam strips were not available a la carte, and we had to order the full meal. Not cool.) The chowder came very quickly, which was nice. There was a nice slice of butter floating on top and halfway melted. I was salivating. But after a few bites, the excitement wore off and reality set it: it was flavorless. I mean it was good, but there was nothing to it. After applying numerous coats of pepper, it finally started to taste better. The "chips" were thin sliced potatos that closer resembled "crisps". Kinda cool idea, but again flavorless (perhaps some seasoning would be nice?). The mahi mahi was so thinly breaded my wife and I debated whether or not it was breaded at all. Again, no flavor and pretty dried out. The clam strips were the size of my pinky. I'll let you decide for yourself if that's good or bad. Personally, I like mine thinner as they seem less chewy. These were a chore to bite through. I will say this: the garlic bread that comes on top of the pile of fish/clams and fries is amazing. Dipping that in the chowder was a game saver for me. My 3 stars rating is based on 1 star for service alone (they were GREAT), and 2 stars for the food (the garlic bread earned them one full star on it's own). I wanted to give them more, trust me. But the food is so bland, I just couldn't. If you're looking for something to eat around Nye Beach, keep looking. I wish we had.

  • Jim S.

My rating is for this type of restaurant only. I am a local and go here a couple of times per month and really like it. It's typically not hard to get parking just down the street (which is a plus in this area). The food is quite good (my favorite is the Shrimp Louie) and their clam chowder is fine (I like Mo's better). The wait staff is OK and prices quite reasonable. They could have a better wine list but then one can bring their own if they want. I like the ambiance and overall would recommend it to take out-of-towners to if you are on a budget. Otherwise go to Saffron Salmon if want to go more upscale.

I've loved this place since my first visit several years ago. The food is deliciously fried and perfect in every way. This is a must go to restaurant in Newport.

  • Joe H.

Chowder was run of the mill and the cream seemed almost separating, curdled. I forgot I had tried this place many years ago. The round, disk shaped "french fries" reminded myself I had eaten here before and did not think I would return. Note to self: There are much better places to enjoy lunch at the Oregon Coast. Try Georgie's around the corner or Tidal Raves in Depot Bay.

Wouldn't even have known about this place if we weren't in the neighborhood. Friendly and the food was great. Chowder, with a nice soft butter slab, was as good as any in town, if not arguably better and the batter used for the seafood platter wasn't overwhelming and greasy. The chips/fries were pretty awesome, too.

Visiting from Little Rock, back at my old stomping grounds, I HAVE to give this place only 2 stars. I had the oriental mandarin chicken salad with a cup of chowder. The chowder was good, not fantastic...too thick for me. It gets 4 stars. The salad could have been fantastic if they had paid any attention at all to the way it was dressed. The mandarins were large and plump, the chicken cooked perfectly (think chicken tenders, sadly, sliced). The noodles were fine but the almonds were mostly almond dust, and not fresh. But the biggest misstep was the dressing, which tasted like soy sauce with a tiny pinch of sugar. It ruined everything! This salad, by the way, is phenomenal at BJ's in Eugene, Oregon! The ladies that sat nearby swore the fish and chips were incredible, and they certainly looked it. From my perspective, I would not go back.

I have been to the Chowder Bowl several times. Now... I'm not a seafood fan, so I cannot personally attest to the greatness of their chowder, but each time I have gone with friends who absolutely RAVE about it. So, whenever we stop through Newport this is our restaurant of choice. I don't like seafood, I've never tried the chowder... why, you ask, am I writing this review??? Simply put, they have the best darn brandy sauce-covered bread pudding I've ever had in my life. They serve a generously-sized portion of moist cinnamon/raisin infused melty bread with a to-die-for brandy sauce on top. Melts in your mouth. Love it. Try it. DO IT. Aside from the bread pudding I honestly can't remember what else I've eaten there. Instead of plain jane fries, they serve round, fried potato discs. I like 'em. The decor is a bit old-timey, but interesting. This seems like mostly a local hangout as it's not on the main strip. Parking is nearby and there are some neat gift shops down this cozy street overlooking the beach. Hope you try it out!

Ever since I was a kid, whenever I went to Newport. I would automatically assume I am going to the chowder bowl for lunch. This place has the best chowder ever. It fills you up and isn't too watery and isn't too thick. juuuuuuuuuuust right. It's so good it'll put you into a food coma. Whenever I'm craving chowder I miss this place and wished I lived closer to get my fix.

My husband and I have been going to the Chowder bowl together for 15 years, he's been going over 20. It's our favorite restaurant in this area of the coast and we look forward to going there several times a year. Lovely little location, right near the beach and perfect for a walk after lunch. Lots of great shops around too. We have NEVER had bad service here. The staff is always friendly and helpful and quick, even when they are busy. I guess if you prefer thick, greasy breading on your fish like a lot of people do, you may not like this place. (Go to Mo's for that) We love their breading here because it's very light, and never greasy. Big, thick wonderful pieces of fish. We want to taste the FISH, not the breading, so we think it's perfection. Clam chowder is fabulous too. 5 Stars, no question. Can't wait till next time!

I've lived locally for 15 years and this is where we go for the best halibut fish and chips and authentic clam chowder. (Mo's is too heavy on the flour.) We take regular visitors there who come for the clams. It's a family place.

Nothing super extraordinary here. The food is all deep fried which was a let down. Having said that I'll follow up by saying that my fish was fried nicely. Not heavy, or greasy. And the "chips" seemed to be actual real sliced potatoes. Which was nice. I will say the Bread Pudding was great. Actually, the bread pudding itself was average, but the brandy sauce was really good. It's a hard brandy sauce, so it was almost like having a hot tottie right after dinner before going out into the breezy coastal night air. Mmm.. 5/5 stars means perfection to me, or very close to it, and there were a few minor missteps for me. Nothing earth shattering, but the overall experience for me was not 5 out of 5 stars. Will I go back? Probably not. Not because it was bad, but when I take a trip to the coast.. I want more out of my seafood than just fried. Actually... I might go back for the bread pudding. :)

I visited Newport, OR for the first time in July 09 with my husband, brother-in-law's family and my in-laws (father & mother). We stopped by because a friend highly recommended it. We had to wait about 15 minutes but it was worth it. The portions were HUGE and their bread was delicious. I love clam chowder and all of us had the same thing. I loved the consistency of it -- it was a little thicker and I personally am not fond of chowder that has a watery consistency. The folks there were very friendly and it was so close to the beach. I would definitely go there again and the price was decent too.

When your joint is named the "Chowder Bowl", you'd better be sure you make darn freakin' good chowder...and rest assured, this place does! Next to the chowders I've consumed in Boston, this place has one of the tastiest chowders - HANDS DOWN! I'm no chowder scientist, but I did some dissecting and I made some fascinating discoveries. I found chopped up clams and potatoes in every bite! Also, it's creamy and thick, like a chowder is supposed to be and soooo good that I ate the whole bowl (not cup) by myself! Ahhh...good thing I'm not lactose intolerant.

Excellent Chowder and fried clams, my favorite. I don't get to Newport often so I always try to stop and enjoy. Thanks Guys for a really enjoyable place to eat. Thanks

We had a very nice lunch with our kids at the Chowder Bowl. I had the sampler platter and it was a nice variety of things! Their fried fish was fresh and delicious! So tender! Chowder was nice, not too salty, and better than Mo's!

The food was good, the service was great, and we didn't have to wait that long for our food. I'm not crazy for seafood so I got the chicken strips which were delicious. I loved the spuds that came with them. My two friends got seafood and they seemed very happy with theirs too. I wouldn't mind coming back here.

A very pleasant find. I ordered the calamari and chips and it was the best I ever had. The breading is lighter than most chip shops and the calamari are cooked well, crunchy legs and all. The chips are not the typical French-fry variety but cut into disks about the thickness of a poker chip. Good portions and competitive pricing make this a repeat stop.

Dear Chowder Bowl, I really wanted to like you, but somehow you made me sick. Your clam chowder (the delicious soup you're named for) was lack luster at best. I do have to say that your fish and chips are pretty decent, but do not make up for the two days of "issues" your food provided. The one redeeming factor was your service and friendly wait staff. Unfortunately I will be choosing Mo's (Ugh!) over you. Sincerely, Clam chowder lover

Small classic Newport style chowder stop. ordered the calamari & the little woman had the deep fried clams, both of us having the chowder. the flyer had the patty melt. All systems go Bonus for having ice cold rouge Dead Guy on tap. May have to ween myself off all the chowder until the cholestaral comes back to a stable level!

My partner and I went here for lunch and the food was so delicious, we went back for dinner! We had chowder at both meals and I can honestly say, their chowder tops the so called famous chowder that's offered up at the public market in Seattle, WA. For lunch, I ordered the shrimp & chips and my partner had the Captain's portion of the fish & chips. We were pleasantly surprised by the freshness and quality of the food. The batter was tasty but did not over-power the flavor of the seafood. The chips were round slices of potato fried to a golden perfection. For dessert, we shared the Marionberry Cobbler with ice cream. The dessert was like a slice of heaven and the ice cream complimented the slight tartness of the berries. For dinner, I had the fish & chips and my better half had the Shrimp Louie salad. Again the quality of our food was spot-on fresh and delicious and her salad was large enough to feed three people. For dessert, she had the bread pudding and the cobbler was a repeat performance for me. My partner loved the bread pudding. After our lunch, we spoke with the owners' son and he told us a brief history of the restaurant which is owned by his parents. And at dinner, James was our server and he told us some more history about the place and that he has worked there for over 16 years and that the owners were the best people in the whole world. Our over-all experience with the Chowder Bowl, gets them 5 stars and numerous rounds of applause! The combination of food and the pleasant interactions with the staff made me dance all the way back to the car!

Possibly the BEST clam chowder I've ever had. My wife was drooling when I shared a few spoonfuls with her. The fish tacos were a bit different that I have had before but very yummy, and also well worth the time. We say on their outdoor deck and enjoyed the sun and wonderful weather. Truly a great find that delivered much more than I expected from my fellow Yelpers whose ratings and reviews brought me in.

  • Christina S.

Wow, two days later and I still can not stop thinking about their chowder!! Some of the best chowder I have ever had. The whole family had chowder and we also split one seafood platter. The seafood was just your basic assortment of fried yummies, but the chips that came with it were perfectly fresh homemade goodness. The service was excellent, very friendly. My pick for Chowder near Newport, OR. Get the bowl with garlic bread it is really all you need. (I am writing this review after trying several other well known establishments in the area)

  • Beatrice S.

I think we found the location by shear luck after reading the yelp reviews, but once there, the fish and chips and calamari were tasty and hot and the selection of brews were good. The service was excellent,so I would recommend it.

Solid 4.5 stars! Great service brings it up to 5 stars. Although the resto was super busy for lunch, the hostess was great and sat us at a table that just opened up, the waitress took our order right away and the bus person cleared the old dishes away quickly and got me Tabasco when the waitress forgot. Why 4.5? They use white bread instead of sourdough for the garlic bread and the fish batter used corn meal (not 'lightly battered'). The fish was fresh and the slum-whatever-chowder was really good. Didn't ask if we wanted the butter pat in the chowder but fished it out once served. Did I say skip ICM in Florence? AVOID!

Enjoyed a recent lunch here when we were staying just up the street. We were going to head to Mo's, but found the Chowder Bowl so close to our hotel so we ended up there instead. Loved it! The chowder was excellent and (I'm afraid to say) better than Mo's. Nice big chunks of clams and excellent flavor. Sometimes the chowder at Mo's seems more like potato soup -- not so at the Chowder Bowl. Also had a shrimp louie that was good with lots of shrimp. My hubby enjoyed his clam fritters and my son devoured his kid's plate of fish & chips. Good place!

We had lunch there on Friday night. The chowder in a bread bowl was great! Our server was very nice and the service was very very fast! I would definitely recommend it.

  • Bobby M.

The place was clean and busy which is usually a good sign. Reasonably quick service, food was decent. I had the shrimp-wich which was just salad shrimp, warm, in a pile on the bread. Their tartar sauce is homemade and awesome. My wife had the sea-which and it was really good, wish I had ordered that. Prices are kinda on the steep side. Chowder definitely wasn't bad but not awesome either. Ok place in general, highlight was the hard working staff however I'm not planning on a return visit.

Food is not great. Chowder was average. Ambience is average. I was expecting more based on some of the other Yelp reviews. I would echo the review that says "VASTLY overrated."

    (2)
  • Tim H.

Great chowder. Nice and thick but not stick to the top of your mouth thick. I could do without the clump of butter on top but oh well. The chowder here better than anything mo's has to offer. They also have a great homemade tarter sauce. Nice and thick. This place is perfect to satisfy your comfort food needs!

Some people swear by this chowder, but as a self-described chowder hound (chowder head?), and having had chowder all up and down the west coast and some of the east coast, i rate this ok, but still, my favorite is from the landlocked salt sea of SAlt Lake City - I LOVE Market street grill's chowder. Also extremely delish Oregon chowder (the BEST in Oregon) may be found at the Blackfish Cafe in Lincoln City, just north of Newport. Back to the Chowder Bowl. Located at historic Nye Beach in Newport, this cute little hole in the wall restaurant has some tasty foodstuffs, and many are addicted to their chowder. Personally, i like their marionberry cobbler the best. My thrift buzzer was mildly clanging, coz i thought things a bit overpriced, but Thrift is my middle name. Definitely worth a visit , though, and have a walk on the beach while you're at it, and have a look in my favorite clothing boutique, Toujour, while you're in Nye. Wonderful Sylvia Beach Hotel is walking distance and there's also a fabulous Tea shoppe with scones to die for, right there too, all close enough to throw a rock at.

  • Kerri H.

The chowder is amazing and the service is fantastic- a great combination! We ordered the chowder, of course, and split a fish and chips- also very tasty. The tarter sauce is a house sauce and was delicious. The fish was not very greasy, with a great breading and top-quality cod. I really loved the chips, which were thinly-sliced potatoes that actually looked like potato chips instead of fries, but were very good. Becky-Sue was our server, and her 20-plus years of service (all here at the Chowder Bowl!) definitely shows through. A short walk from the beach- like fifty steps- makes this the place to stop in for lunch. Get there before you're pass-out hungry, though, because it's hoppin'- but worth the wait.

Very, very good chowder and I'm kind of picky about chowder since my dad used to be a fisherman back in the day. This tasted fresh and was *almost* as good as homemade. I could tell they didn't use canned clams, which was a plus. A friendly, casual environment also.

  • Stephen B.

Excellent chowda!!! They also had very good fish tacos, clam strips, and fish & chips.

  • Mr. O.

Fish & Chips are very good, but fish specials are expensive for what is delivered to your table. The Chowder Bowl should have more than two dollar signs on Yelp. It's not cheap eats! Would eat there again if someone else buys.

  • Lisa H.

The staff was super friendly and the prices were affordable. I liked the chowder, but I wasn't overly excited by it. My friend said the salad he had was good. My main meal was shrimp and fries. They were a bit on the cold side and not overly tasty, but I was satisfied. It does have a location close to the beach and tourist shops. The best part was the friendliness of the service.

Abysmal. Do you speak spanish? I had heard the reviews and raves about this place. So, after spending all day on the ocean fishing, I thought Id get a bite at a new place. While its located in the high rent district with the possibility of nice views, that evening all the guests were shoe-horned into the upper seating area with no one getting a sea view. hmm. There seemed to be an adequate number of staff present (high schooler hosts, wait staff, spanish speaking cleaner uppers, and cooks all whirling about. I feel fortunate that I can speak really good spanish because I was able to request drink refills and little odds and ends that my waitress forgot to bring while attending to her other two tables. hmm. The food was "ok". I dont think they have the lock down on the best chowder (the newport cafe on the main drag does a good chowder and are open 24/7) I got steamers which were microwaved not steamed (cooking time too short to have steamed, shells cold) and gummy. The couple next to me got the captains mega platter which looked average and a little crispy to me. The best friend items are at the Light House Deli south of town--which is probably where Ill keep going in the future when Im in town.

Delightful place to stop for lunch. Our server was very attentive and knowledgable about the menu. We had seared scallops and cod fish tacos and chowder. Everything was quite tasty, and it was nice having the option of seared fish instead of the general stand by of deep fried. My hubby's scallops were cooked to perfection, as were my fish tacos. And may I say they were by far the biggest fish tacos I have ever ordered. Not big with slaw and filler either, big and full with fresh flaky cod fish. (not deep fried) I could hardly eat it all. They even carried our favorite Rogue Beers :) Good job Chowder bowl, we will return!

Fast service, we shared the halibut special - 3 pieces of fish, chips, texas toast garlic bread and a bowl of chowder. Enough for us to split for sure! And seriously the $16.95 price was great. Order that any other place and it's at least that much. The fish was terrific. It is a corn meal style batter which is much thinner than a beer batter and therefore less batter and more fish. The fish itself was nice and juicy. The chowder was great, though I personally would have ordered it without the extra pat of butter on top but it was tasty. The garlic bread is texas toast, a nice thick slab toasted to perfection. This is a must stop for our next visit - hope you enjoy it as well! (And there are the BEST truffles across the street if you save room for dessert!)

  • Julie M.

Excellent chowder! Thick, but not so thick that you have to eat it with a fork. Great fish tacos (get the corn tortillas) and the service was good. Chili cheese and chips were great too - good spicy chili. I think some of the bad reviews just caught them on an off day because I am PICKY and I thought it was great.

first things first...DON'T GET THE BOCA VEGGIE BURGER. ick. anyway, not much in the way of vegetarian food. so why 4 stars? SUPER friendly staff. they even sang happy birthday to my hubby! (and gave him a HUGE cobbler on the house). everyone said their chowder was amazing, if not the best they ever had. their fries were so so...thin and weird and cold. AMAZING home made tarter sauce...best restaurant tarter sauce EVER. anyway, come here for the amazing experience (its right near the beach), the wonderful waitstaff, and semi-above average food.

Great location, and you'd think Nye Beach would be a great place for seafood. But with this place, you'd be wrong. Surly service, clam chowder that was the closest thing to canned. Give it a miss. And go to Nana's Irish Pub just around the corner - yum!

    (2)
  • Kathy P.

Yep, this is as good as it gets! The clam chowder and cajun seasoned mahi-mahi was to die for! Local expert "Meadow" gave us wonderful advice for an awesome beach and remained friendly throughout our dining experience. We sampled various chowders from the coastal area and Chowder Bowl is the only one that gets our 5 stars!

  • Tina P.

We LOVE clam chowder, and this is the best place we've found on the Oregon Coast to get it (and we've tried many). Their service is super--James is excellent--and their location in Historic Nye Beach is, too. The chowder is the star of their menu, garlic bread is tasty but spendy (almost $1 per slice), and the fish is average, we don't prefer their fries (little tater coins, no thanks). They used to have a chowder + salad bar all-u-can-eat deal that was our fave but the salad bar was decommissioned to make room for more tables. Always super busy but we've never waited longer than 15 minutes for a table. Parking is tight in this district but hey, it's the beach, walk a few blocks in the salt air! :)

The atmosphere is lacking I will say that much. But the waitstaff is always friendly and the food is delicious. My parents love seafood, so they always order something from the sea. Personally fish smells like a dumpster and I don't want it in my mouth. I go here for the chowder, it is the Chowder Bowl. So if you want nice presentation and amazing atmosphere look somewhere else. If you want a good meal after you do your shopping, stop by.

Best clam chowder we found on Oregon coast. Had the Halibut fish and chips along with cup of chowder and wowie, it was super. There was so much fish, had to take half the plate home for next day dinner. The chips are fresh potatoes sliced as chips and fried and they are just yummy. No french fries them but so good. Recommend a visit, the people were friendly, place was clean, and food was scrumptious.

  • Kelly K.

I came here because in my online research, this place was voted the best I could find for chowder, and I love me some clam chowder! LOL The service was definately lacking. We were passed by three times before we were even given menus by someone who looked like they were just leaving the kitchen from dishwashing and said they'd chase down a waiter. That part was not impressive. Granted, the place is deceivingly small on the outside. On the inside it's three times the size I expected. Once we had someone paying attention to us, everything went smoothly. I was pleasently surprised at the size of the "bowl" of clam chowder. It was at least twice the size of any other bowl of soup I've seen. I was full of clamy goodness and the consistancy was perfect: not to thick and goupy like Mo's and not so thin it's like water. The flavor was lacking though. I make clam chowder at home and I'm no expert, but mine has more flavor with minimal ingredients. I'm not sure if it comes down to the quality of the ingredients outside of the clams? My daughter and son ordered the fish and chips and not only was it expensive for two pieces of fish, it was greasy, greasy, greasy. My husband (being a seafood hater) ordered a burger. He said "meh". The cost of the Chowder Bowl is at least three $, not two. Th only thing reasonably priced is the clam chowder. Everything else is over $10. My kids ended up with stumach aches from the greasy food. I think they get away with thier prices because they are two blocks from the beach. I will not be back.

  • PeePee B.

Friendly staff, nice location. After being totally pumped up reading the reviews here I must say - meh. Yes, the $5.50 bowl of chowder was good. It wasn't the mystical experience I had hoped for, although I love the fact that they don't put a slab of bacon in there. For the love of god, it's CLAM chowder, pig need not be included.

  • Curtis B.

I prefer the chowder here instead of Mo's. The service was awesome here and i felt like part of the family. We had fish n' chips and chowder. The fish and chips were good, not spectacular, but the chowder was very good. The decoration isn't much on the inside, but that's not why you go there. The food is worth it. After you finish your dinner/lunch head down to the beach onle a block or two away.

    (4)
  • Kelli Rhyanne K.

In two words...Very Good! The reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 was due to the service. Every time my husband and I go to the coast, I feel the need to have clam chowder. We usually go to Mo's, but I'm not that crazy about their chowder, so we decided to try the Chowder Bowl. When we arrived, we were greeted by a friendly waiter who told us to sit anywhere we like. Since we were the only people their at the time, there was no problem fining a table. After Several minutes, our waitress arrived with a couple of menues and an unfriendly attitude. It took awhile to place our order and even longer for our order to arrive. I'm not sure why the hold up...we were the only people there!! So, due to slow and unfriendly service I give 4 stars.

  • Celina H.

Chowder Bowl in Newport was a rare gem to find. It literally smacked us out of nowhere and we were more than grateful and happy to have it find us. The day was cold and rainy and Chowder Bowl was there to welcome us with warmth, a great atmosphere and a heaping bowl of delicious clam chowder. Now I'm not easily won by seafood, but Chowder Bowl was a genuine, not too crowded place that set me up and knocked me down with their Captain's portion of Fish n' Chips. By the time our meal was complete we were ready to brave the cold and rain and now every time we are near Nye Beach, it's a given we go have lunch at Chowder Bowl.

Good chowder but a bit overrated for the rest of the food. Still a decent fish and chips place at a decent price. Serves wine and beer which can be a plus for a nice evening.

Chowder...fish...cheap. But I feel that the place is somewhere between a legitimate restaurant and a soup kitchen. Which is a total plus.

We just got back from a long weekend in Newport - jeebus it's beautiful there! Anyways we ended up eating at Chowder Bowl twice, because it's just that darn good. The first night we had the chowder, of course, and fish and chips and fried clams and chips - everything amazing. The chowder arrives creamy and delicious, chock full of clams, adn with a pat of butter on top! Its as if they wanted to make their already delicious soup even more delicious so they decided to randomly add butter - why not!? The fish was amazingly good, the batter was crunchy and light and the fish its self was flakey and perfection. the prices are great, you can get in and out for under 10 bones a person if you want to. The service was awesome too - when we came back they remembered us and what we had ordered the night before asking "Did you both want Dead Guy's again tonight?" - I love that, they let you feel like a local when you are really just a lame tourist. We had clam chowder at a couple other places - but theirs was my top pick. Try it! You won't be sorry *drooooool*

I'll have to say the Chowder is pretty good here. The fish specials are a bit expensive and definitely not among the best we've ever had. We went on a busy night and had so-so service. Our waitress had a hard time understanding us and forgot to bring us some additional napkins & dressing. We probably wont be going back.

    (3)
  • Scott B.

We have always enjoyed the chowder bowl as a family. I really like the fish and chips, fish tacos, and many of their specials. I am not a huge fan of their chowder. It is good but I wouldn't consider it the best in the area but continue to go there for the other things including the friendly staff.

This place is steps from the beach right in the heart of Nye Beach. We all had a big bowl of their delicious chowder with garlic bread and treated myself to a slice of their amazing marrionberry cobbler a la mode. If I had more time to spend in Newport I would definitely explore more of this great little area.

After reading several previous glowing reviews on this establishment, from Yelp members. Must say both myself and my husband were very disappointed. The Clam Chowder was very disappointing .I only found (2) two very small pieces of clam in my bowl. My husband never found any, more like a chunky potato soup. The fish- Cod, was bland. Only things good were. The Beer. The Clean restroom. The Service. Would not recommend this Chowder House, or return.

5 stars!? Really. We we're driving up the Oregon coast and stopped here because it had 4 stars on yelp. The chowder was decent. Not horrible, but certainly not the best I've ever had. The calamari was close to the worst I've ever had. It was edible....barely. It was pretty tough and flavorless. Service was fine. I'm giving it 2 stars "Meh. I've experienced better."

Strange to think of a seafood restaurant as having good chili but this one has some of the best. I almost always have a chili burger when I stop by.

Truly fantastic. I got the chipotle prawn salad and it was so huge!! The chipotle seasoning was very flavorful and I am so glad I got this dish. Also came with a cup of chowder so I was really full in the end. The grilled salmon burger(sandwich?) was a healthy choice among all that po' boys. If you are getting the chowder as a main I recommend getting it in a regular bowl rather than the bread bowl because the bread is not that great.

Ate here with my family and had a good time. The service was fine, place reasonably clean, and food was fresh and tasty. Kids' menus were nice as they offered a little more than the usual. The staff quickly accommodated 13 of us on a Friday night so we were truly impressed with their flexibility. Cute place. We ate the spicy Cajun style shrimp and the tacos. The Cajun was not so spicy, but tasty and the Tacos... well... I needed to grab some chipotle sales from another dish to give it some flavor. All fresh, but a bit underwhelming. Prices seemed typical. Not a disappointment, to say, but not amazingly memorable. Worth a try.

Date Visited: July 11, 2015 All I can say is EXCELLENT FOOD!!! Almost every visit to Nye Beach we have seen this quaint restaurant just before the parking area but each time there was a significant wait, and the impatient people we can be have opted to "try again soon"... this time we found the restaurant busy but the wait was only a few moments so we finally tried Chowder Bowl and found the reason for the constant crowd - EXCELLENT FOOD and great staff! We started off with sharing a huge bowl of the Clam Chowder (hey, we're at the coast!!) which was the utmost best I have ever eaten and now all others will be judged by. Our 7 y/o tried it and said it is now her favorite "soup" ever!! I am a sucker for fish tacos this was my choice and it was very, very tasty! My wife had the "Half Pound of "Fire"" prawns in Cajun sauce - AMAZING!!! You have got to use the bread to finish the sauce!! All in all we definitely can see why people wait for a table at Chowder Bowl - excellent food, fun atmosphere, and great staff! And one of our favorite beaches is just a short walk away - what a SCORE!!!

This place excelled on all counts! A little on the pricier side, but completely worth it. Their chowder is to die for and their service is top notch!

Great Chowder! We ate here based on Yelp reviews and some of the locals suggested it. I had a bowl and my wife had a cup. They fill it to the top too! We both felt it needed a bit more salt, which we added. It was great. Maybe not the "best I've ever had", but great. I had a dinner salad as well and my wife had the Shrimpwhich. The shrimp were petite salad shrimp on a bun. She like it. I saw some fried fish come out for another table and it looked fabulous. I'd eat here again - have the chowder and a fried fish sandwhich.

Cute place, right off the beach. The service was good, and the food was great! I had the chowder bread bowl, and it was perfect. They have a cute patio area, and a very fun, beachy atmosphere.

I visited Newport Labor Day weekend and decided to eat here one night. It was amazing. I ordered a clam chowder in a bread bowl and it was great. My gf had the fish and chips which were also great. The guy waiting on us was really great as well and helped make the experience what it was. I would recommend to anyone visiting Newport.

Have a bowl of the best clam chowder in the Newport area (Nye Beach)...with a slather of butter in the center and forget about the diet for one meal! It's worth every spoonful !

Outstanding. We walked in mid-day and it was moderately busy, but within a minute or less of being seated the waitress took our drink order. No joke, a minute goes by and my ice-cold beer is handed to me. We ordered and within 2 minutes our sides arrive. Wow. Just as we finished our sides, the main showed up. Ridiculously fast service. My wife ordered a Caesar salad with salmon that came with a cup of chowder and I ate a black bean burger with a salad. Everything was presented nicely and was delicious. Next time we're in town we'll be back.

A very cool historical restaurant. Very traditional oceanic atmosphere with quick service and great menu. Tourists and fisherman sit side to side dining on the famous chowder bowls. The bowl of chowder is hearty and a meal in its self. The fish and chips were also very good. Loved the thinly sliced potatoes. We left feeling very full. Great place.

Passing thru Newport on our drive up the coast to Seaside. Stopped in to do lunch after doing my research on Yelp earlier in the week. Solid 3 stars. Arrived shortly after 1pm on a gorgeous Friday in April. Parked around the corner and walked a couple blocks enjoying a good stretch of the legs after driving 4 hours. Immediate seating, but we lucked out on that as the place was full. Sat near the door to the deck and was "delighted" to feel the cool wind gusts every time someone went in & out to serve the brave souls who opted to sit outside. There was only one party on the deck, but those servers sure checked on them with alarming frequency! No star deduction for that. It is what it is. But it was annoying and if there's a chill in the air & it's gusting....don't sit near the door going out to the patio. Our server was very friendly & attentive. Friendly is a loose term....maybe smiling & attentive would be a better description. He wasn't overly talkative or communicative on suggesetions. Again, no star deduction there either. Wife & daughter are NOT huge seafood fans. I figured they'd like the potato "chips" and would go for a burger or sandwich. They both had the "Turn Around". I love fish tacos. Read the reviews & knew it was going to be hit or miss. Kind of a love 'em or hate 'em scenario. I also really wanted to try their chowder. I was pleased to see the fish tacos came with a side of chowder! Now my only dilemma was that I wanted the "Slumgullion" style with bay shrimp! Our server said, "No problem!" When my soup arrived, it was a full sized bowl. (See pic). After I got the bill, I see our server upgraded not only the "add shrimp" as expected but also changed it from a cup to a bowl and charged accordingly....star deduction! I had assumed they'd just add shrimp to my cup of chowder...and charge accordingly. The soup was good. Not to die for. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it was a disappointment. Mostly because I had my hopes up. So what do I base it against? In truth, my wife & I think McGrath's has the best clam chowder---creamy, potato-y...lots of clams...and excellent all around flavor. If you agree, then you'll probably be disappointed with the chowder here. Mind you, there are a million different opinions on what constitutes good, better & best chowder, hence why I felt compelled to qualify my assessment of this particular chowder in comparison to McGraths. Again, it was not bad....just not as good as hoped! My fish tacos, on the otherhand, were great! Again, the reviews on here are mixed. I went with corn tortillas. I liked the freshness of the fish. And to me, the mango salsa was very tasty. But again, reading all the reviews here, it's going to be personal preference. Were they the best fish tacos? No. But I did enjoy them AND would order them again. I also appreciated the good sized portion. Fish tacos notoriously come in dinky sized tortillas with maybe two pieces of fish...if you are lucky. I felt the portion size for this dish was very generous. The BIG surprise in this meal were my wife & daughter's sandwiches. They didn't look like anything special on arrival. In fact, one could even say they might not look very good at all. Possibly dry? Nope! They were both very good. Perfectly toasted (not too crispy) bread and they were both moist & with a yummy blend of flavors. The potato "chips" were also a hit but mostly because of the novelty & my daughter is a sucker for such things. It's a Pepsi joint. We are Coke fans. We went with waters. The female restroom was out of order. In the end, we'd probably come here again if we were staying in Newport, but probably wouldn't make it a "must go to" place if just passing through. I'd be open to trying something else. So yeah...solid three stars. Not great. But not bad either.

We ate here on two different days on our last trip to the coast. The first day, the chowder was not as we remembered it... it was very thin and didn't have great flavor. We also ordered calamari, which was great. About a week later, we gave the chowder another try. This time, the chowder was outstanding... just as we remembered it. We thought it was odd that the chowder could be so different from one day to another. We figured it would be the same, day in and day out... but it was for sure much different on our second visit. We also ordered fried zucchini and onion rings... both were very good. The service, both times, was fabulous. Friendly, courteous and attentive. I wish I had written the name of the gal we had the first day, but I did not. The second day we visited, our server's name was Brandon. He was outstanding! We look forward to our next trip to Nye Beach, and having great clam chowder at The Chowder Bowl!

NEWPORT, OR: For being named the "Chowder Bowl" I came in with high expectations of their namesake dish. Unfortunately it wasn't anything special, just a pretty good bowl of chowder. I ordered the halibut tacos, too, and they were just okay. Not a lot of flavor at all, even with a bunch of salsa dumped on top. The fish was über fresh, but the whole presentation just didn't make it happen for me.

I took my first trip down to the Coast yesterday and stopped by Chowder Bowl after walking down to the beach. We were greeted and seated. Both of us ordered hot tea because it was super windy and cold outside. We decided to share a plate together and ordered an extra bowl of soup and garlic bread each. The soup came out after a few minutes and it was warm and rich and creamy. The texture was different than I expected. It seemed a little chalky (that's not exactly the perfect word to use to describe it, but I can't think of anything else), but the taste was great. Our garlic bread was served beside the soup and they with little oyster crackers. Our entree came before we were able to finish our soup, so I was impressed with the speed our food was served. The plate was perfect for sharing. There was fish, fried oyster, fried clams, butterfly shrimp, cold shrimp and calamari. I loved how they served fries "chip" style. However I left the cold shrimp because I wasn't a fan (this is personal preference not because there was anything wrong with it). We were both pretty full with a decent amount of leftovers on the plate. Our server was very sweet. She was friendly, funny and provided us with prompt service. Thanks for welcoming me to the coast! What was really cool about the place was they they had a chalkboard you could see when you walked into the door that showed the high and low tide times and when the sunset. I thought that was really unique.

The chowder is some of the best I've had. Had the halibut tacos special - divine. The period are good, service is great, it's a little noisy, but not enough to deter me from going back two days in a row lol

The clam chowder was everything we were told it would be and then some. The fish & chips were good, but the clam chowder is what makes this an awesome spot to eat!

Located in the Nye beach area, the chowder bread bowl was outstanding! This was the biggest bread bowl I have ever seen, and the clam chowder was delicious. I'm from the Bodega Bay area in California and they have outstanding chowder and I was a little skeptical about what I was going to get; but, this was far better than any I've ever had! Most of their food is deep fat fried and it looked good, there were people in and out the whole time we were there and the place was crowded but no waiting. However, this was in the middle of the week and not in the evening on a Friday or Saturday so I don't know what it would look like then as far as wait times are concerned. I would suggest calling ahead and seeing if they make reservations.

I was very happy with my Cajun oyster sandwich. The oysters were Cajun spiced and lightly grilled, so the insides were still moist and juicy. The oysters were served with bacon, lettuce and tomato. I definitely enjoyed it, but it may have been a bit heavy on the salt, especially with the potato chips. The potato chip fries were pretty delicious though.

The chowder was really good, but I can't say the same for the fish tacos, which were dry. Great service, very fast and friendly, and a comfortable atmosphere. If you're looking for good chowder, this is the place. They have tasty fish & chips too, with actual CHIP shaped potato fries. My kids thought that was pretty neat! :)

I've had three visits to the Chowder Bowl over the last two years. The reason for the review is that I always end up wishing that it was better. Don't get me wrong... Chowder Bowl is very serviceable and perfect for those beach days when you are with a big crowd and you're starving and you need food and you need it NOW. I just find the food kind of mediocre. The fried seafood pates are good, but I personally do not enjoy the fries. They are flat and shaped like chips and just sort of dry. Popcorn shrimp was good, fried oysters were tasty. The fish tacos should be awesome judging by how beautiful they look but they are lacking in flavor. After I ordered them today, I remembered that I had them a year ago and was not impressed. Same experience today. Bottom line, it's in a great location, it's pretty quick and filling so you'll get what you're looking for from a day at the beach. Just don't let your expectations get too high.

The Chowder. Best in Newport so far. Thick and creamy nice chunks of clams and small bits of potatoes. . I had the calamari not too bad, the home made apricot dipping sauce was different but nice touch.. Sea food plater was very nice. Wife had halibut and fries also very good. My kids had shrimp plater for kids and chicken strips as well and root beers. There was a ton of food per plater. The waiter was very nice and it wasn't that busy in the place. We got seating right away. The only thing I can complain about would be. Waiting around for our ticket and a to go container. And the prices were a bit high for a hole in the wall place where the parking can be difficult at times.. I spent $77 on early dinner for four. The kids dinners were about $20 with drinks and a Pepsi and ice tea with the grown-ups pluss our dinners total $77. Not including tip. When I'm on vacation last thing is to think about is what I spend on dinner. But in this case it was worth it. In the long run.. In the future I will be watching the prices a bit closer when I order fried food from this place. . But I will be coming back for more next year...keep those fryers warm for me.

This place was pretty good. The fish and chips my husband has was really good. I had the fish tacos and was a bit disappointed. The mango salsa wasn't very good but the pico was. The clam chowder was really good. The best part was the service. We got right in to a patio table and out waiter was friendly and on point. He knew what he was doing for sure.

One of the highlights of my trip to Newport!! The atmosphere was great, but the food was phenomenal! As a group we had onion rings and fried zucchini for apps that were very tasty and not greasy. The best was the clam chowder. I really think it's the best I've had. You have the option of a bread bowl with it as well as adding shrimp to it. I opted no bread bowl and added shrimp. Yummiest ever! My wife had the fish tacos and said they were definitely worth it. My youngest enjoyed his grilled cheese made with sour dough and home made chips. Definitely a must eat at when in Newport.

So far the "Chowder Bowl" is personally #1 for the best chowder in the Newport area. It had a nice balance of tender clams and potatoes...unlike some of the other places I've tried in the area that are serving "potato chowder" where you get to play the "where's the clams?" game. The Garlic Bread was a VERY lightly toasted white bread and did not have much of a garlic flavor so I would pass on that next time I go for chowder. I also had the Caesar salad which was just average and lacked the tangy flavors that I prefer in a well prepared Caesar dressing. My 4 star rating is for the Chowder alone (2 stars for the garlic bread and Caesar Salad).

Their chowder here is medium good on a scale of vomit sauce and I think you just blew my mind. I Think You Just Blew My Mind Oh, oh, oh Daaaaamn! Hell yeah bay-bay! Chowder Bowl Medium Good Aiiiiiiight Hey, I didn't get the runs Butt nasty Vomit sauce The sauce is thick and creamy with some fresh clams in it. The waitstaff are friendly. You can eat it.

The chowder bowl offers good seafood fare at a decent price. I love the clam chowder, it is excellent! I also have had the Shrimp Louie salad which is delicious, fresh and huge! The clam and chips are very tasty and was a good portion. The clam strips you get are nice and meaty! The atmosphere is cozy and the staff are attentive and pleasant. I love the location, Nye beach is fun to walk around.

I loved this place! You seat yourself, it's small but cozy and the food was on point! My husband got fish and chips, I got clam chowder. We loved it! No clam chowder will ever compare to this place, it was soooo good! If you go at least get a cup of clam chowder it's amazing!! It's in a cute little area with shops around it and the ocean is right next to it.

Based on our most recent visit, Sunday March 8th, I am knocking Chowder Bowl down to 4 stars. The service was competent, but the food was not up to the same caliber as I am used to. The chowder tasted good, but did not have the same creamy texture I remember -- it was a lot pastier. Still miles ahead of Mo's, but not what I expect from this place. I ordered the fish tacos for a main course, and while they did taste alright, they were rather disappointing. The fish had a bit of a soggy texture to it, and there really was very little seasoning -- even after adding a bunch of mango salsa to one taco, and pico de gallo to the other. It ended up making quite a drippy mess, which is OK if the food is outstanding, but not in this case. I think the fish needs a bit of a sear on both sides in order to stand up to a "taco" preparation. This is still one of my favorites in the area, but this visit definitely seemed different than past experiences.

Went there today with my wife and 15 month old daughter. The service was good: helpful, friendly and attentive. The food was fantastic. I had a chipotle ranch shrimp taco that was delicious and my wife had a fish sandwich which she really enjoyed. Most, if not all, dishes come with house made clam chowder which was amazing. My daughter thoroughly enjoyed the chowder and the child's meal we got her. The final check was slightly spendy but that's only because we both ordered specials.

The Chowder bowl is always first on my list when I recommend a great place to eat along the Oregon Coast. I'm fairly certain this one of those local favorite "gems". The building is quaint and adorably tucked away in the very popular Nye beach district. I have never had anything but great service despite the fact that this place always seems to be buzzing with coustomers. If you ever get a chance to stop in I recomend the Cannon bowl. Its is a large bread bowl packed with their famous chowder! Though it is a shame that the Oregon Coast is notoriously cold and windy, because the outdoor patio area is my favorite spot to kick back and enjoy some amazing chowder! It is also a great place to bring the kids! I think I might have to stop and buy some Chowder bowl merchandise next time!

  • Warren S.

Claim Chowder was very good. The slice of butter that was added to the chowder is a nice touch. The bread bowl that it came in was not that good, especially if you are from San Francisco where there is fresh sour dough bread bowls. The calamari was fresh and fried to a golden color The Seafood Platter was fresh and fried to a golden color. It was a nice portion, but their claim about the amount of food is exaggerated.

After meeting and speaking with the owners, whom I discovered in my local watering hole, I was assured they'd addressed all the issues in my previous review. I promised to visit again, since that young lady with the attitude was no longer employed. I just happened to have a guest in town over the Thanksgiving weekend and decided that would be the perfect opportunity. We were met by a cheerful young man and seated promptly. Our waitress greeted us soon after, delivered our menus and educated us on the specials for the evening. We both started with the Slumgolian Chowder (clam chowder with Oregon shrimp) followed by the evenings special - grilled salmon. Both were delicious. We passed on desert as the meal was very filling (and we'd had left over turkey for lunch). I've updated my review from one star to four and I will be happy to return with my out-of-town guests in the future.

This place absolutely rocks. They have incredible clam chowder that puts Mo's to shame. Their fish tacos on corn tortillas are ridiculously scrumptious. The staff is incredibly attentive and kind. I've been to this restaurant several times and I've never been disappointed. There's one gentleman server there in particular that is ALWAYS smiling and moving. He is THE reason we came back after our very first visit. I wanttoo dayhis name starts with a T (Trevor? Travis? ). The staff is so courteous and kind, not only to patrons, but to one another as well. It's nice to dine in a place where the staff have one another's back in serving assistance.

Have to recommend this little restaurant off the beaten path in Newport. We went for the bread pudding and it was almost the best we have eaten across the US. The fish tacos were the BEST. The chowder is right up there with Pismo Beach's Splash too. We will definitely recommend this restaurant to fellow RV'ers. The service was prompt and friendly. Definitely 5 stars.

We went to the Chowder Bowl because people said it was the best in town. We thought it was OK. It was very busy when we got there, we hit the busy lunch crowd. The restaurant is small and does not really accommate for people waiting to be seated. Because they were so busy we agreed to let them seat us at a large table with two other couples we didn't know, instead of waiting for a table for two. They were very appreciative that we all agreed to sit with strangers. And once we were seated the service was very fast and friendly, which I commend them on since it was so busy. It's easy to get cranky or less attentive when it's busy and crowded like that. Our waiter was good. The food was only OK. My husband got the clam chowder (said to be best in town) and said it was good, but not "stellar". I had chicken strips. They were pretty standard as well. The french fries were actually round spuds, and again only OK. The cheesy garlic french bread was excellent though! All in all, I wouldn't send somewhere there under the premise that it's the best, but the food is fairly good, and the staff are friendly.

Nice little place right near the ocean. Not a fan of the clam chowder however. It tasted like potato soup more than clam chowder. The fish and chips were great though. They have a nice breading on them not a batter dipped greasy crust like some places.

We had always eaten chowder at the competition in Cannon Beach. We moved to Albany and kept trying the competitor in Newport but we were disappointed. My wife finally convinced me to try Chowder Bowl. We love that it is right on Nye Beach. It has a bright and cheery atmosphere. The wait staff was friendly and attentive. The chowder was the best we have had in Newport and I finally found calamari that isn't caked in heavy breading. We have found our favorite lunch spot at the beach.

Their homemade berry cobbler with vanilla bean ice cream I would give 5 stars. Clam chowder was good but not delicious. I like it thick and not too many clams and it was just that. Fish and chips were ok-thick and juicy but kinda bland. Chicken sane hick was alright too. It's all worth it though for the location! When you're done just walk down to the beach!

I have been coming here for many many years and it has always been my favorite place on the coast to eat. Will still go back as I am sure that experience was a fluke.

You must go to this restaurant! This place has the best fish tacos I have ever had the pleasure of eating. Their clam chowder is also to die for. The food is a bit expensive. However, it is excellent. The cod tacos are awesome. Service has always been excellent and they accommodate my children.

By golly the portion sizes are amazing! We came on our honeymoon and needed some good food on a tight budget. We hoped on TripAdvisor and this place came recommended and their menu was posted online for us to choose from. When we got there it was raining and inside brought comfort and a nice atmosphere. We sat ourselves and ordered what we had chosen earlier. The waitress was so kind and sweet and put our order in quickly. We enjoyed the charming view on the local shopping distract. Oh btw parking is difficult to obtain with their old style narrow roads. We parked on the main street and and enjoyed a nice little stroll. Our food came in a quick manner and was explosive with deliciousness. We enjoyed every bite and even made plans to come again!

Was so excited to drive 3 hours to Newport and have a great place to grab some chowder and lunch. We arrived and decided to get it to go, because the weather was so nice and we could walk down and eat it on the beach. We ordered two bowls of chowder, clam strips and a cod sandwich. The cook must of lost the salt and pepper this day because everything was so bland and tasteless we ended up throwing it out and going down the street to Mo's. What a waste of $40. Save your money... Move along down the street.

Chowder Bowl had, seriously, pretty much the best fish and chips I've ever had. And I've eaten a ton. I'm writing this review primarily to remind myself to come back here next time I'm in Newport. My partner has the fish and chips as well and also enjoyed it. This is a "4+" review. Why not five stars? Well, maybe we are snobby, but we are originally from New England. And the chowder. . .well, we've never really been satisfied here in Oregon. A pat of butter on the top is a really bad sign. I'll skip that next time, but definitely need to have those fish and chips again.

Fish tacos are not good. The mango salsa is flavorless. Clam chowder was pretty good.

The clam chowder is amazing! Had the shrimp louie! Its giant and full of fresh shrimp!

I love seafood and chowder, and my husband doesn't at all, so we're always on the lookout for something we both can enjoy at the beach. I had the chowder in a bread bowl, and it was delicious! Very filling! He chose chili in a bread bowl and loved it. 2 satisfied customers with varying tastes! We'll be back the next time we're in Newport. The marionberry cobbler with ice cream was also excellent.

I didn't think I even liked chowder, but I tried a spoonful of my husbands because everyone said it was so good. Man they weren't lying! It is delicious! Fish and chips was a solid lunch choice as well.

Love love love the chowder bowl. I've tried chowder & seafood all over this country and have to say their chowder is outstanding! I crave it & it's one of the few places I actually schedule in on my Oregon trips! Their clam strips are giant and their chips are actually more like a thick cut potato chip something between a fry and potato chip. They have both inside and outside seating but be prepared for a crowd when going in on a weekend. Service can be really mixed but never horrendous

I have eaten here twice. Once during a dinner rush and on a separate trip during a slower lunch hour. Both times the food was amazing (fish, shrimp, fries and of course Chowder!) solid beer list as well. I also would also recommend that you ask to be in James section. He served us both times. He is on it! Friendly, hustles and doesn't miss anything. Well done James and the chowder bowl I look forward to seeing you on my next trip.

The service was very fast and very friendly! We ordered the calamari for an appetizer. You could tell it was handmade and it wasn't completely covered in breading and it was fried to perfection. Their homemade dipping sauces were also delicious! My boyfriend had their clam chowder and he said it was so good. He wished he'd had a bowl rather than a cup of it. (I tasted it and thought it was gross... but I hate clam chowder so my opinion doesn't really count :) ). For my entrée I asked my servers opinion between two dishes and he was very straightforward and honest with his answer, which I appreciated. I got the Chipotle prawn and bacon wrap, and oh my goodness, it was amazing. Lots of good flavor and the shrimp was cooked perfectly. Our drinks were never empty, and the speed of service was great.

Good chowder. Very flavorful. Had the halibut fish tacos. Big portion cooked well. The mango salsa was a nice touch. Friendly and attentive staff.

This place was great! The food was good, service was good, and the place is loud - a bonus when you have 3 little kids to take to a restaurant. I'm glad we went :) We went on a Friday night and had about a 15 minute wait to get a table, the weather was nice so we waited outside. It would suck to have to wait in crummy weather though, no indoor area to loiter. My husband and I went here for our anniversary over 10 years ago and couldn't remember the exact place but I'm glad we found it again.

Love the Chowder bowl. Amazing clam chowder, huge salads and you can't go wrong with their specials. The service is the best, James is always outstanding but all the staff goes above and beyond.

Best chowder on the coast - even if you're not into clam chowder! Tender clams, rich, creamy, buttery, perfect thickness. Get the chowder with the Bay Shrimp on top (Slomgolian?). Such a cute, quaint place, right on Nye Beach in the middle of some funky little shops. Service has always been fast & efficient. Good prices. The fried zucchini appetizer - yummy. My only complaint is no bread for the table. Who eats chowder w/o bread? You can purchase slices of garlic bread, but don't - lackluster at best.

My husband and I both got the fish and chips meal. It comes with garlic bread and tartar sauce. Everything was so good. The fish was crispy and very tasty. The fries were excellent, the garlic bread was just right and the tartar sauce was perfect. The restaurant is right across the seawall with amazing views. The people were very friendly and the food came out very quickly.

It has very nice seating, including an outdoor place. However, a lot of the food was not worth the hefty prices. It was no better than the other restaurants around. The chowder was underwhelming. One good item though, was the fish and chips, as it was fried well and in pretty good portion for what you pay. But I do recommend their desserts. The marionberry cobbler was very much worth that price. It was delicious and worth a stop, if you are stopping by the restaurant.

We managed to eat here 3 times in 3 days on our recent visit to Newport. Our experience was very similar to Jared's. My husband and I both started with the New England clam chowder and loved it. It was thick and creamy and the potatoes were diced small. I can't say it's the best chowder I've had but it's really good and I liked it better than the last cup of chowder I had at Legal Seafoods in Boston. My husband loved his fish and chips - the chips are like homemade potato chips and not steak fries which was a nice change. The chipotle shrimp tacos were a special and absolutely delicious - some of the best tacos I have had - better than the ones at Local Ocean in Newport. It seemed like the shrimp were marinated in chipotle seasoning - they were spicy but we felt it was just the right amount of heat that left a tingle but allowed you to enjoy the other ingredients in the taco - the toasted corn tortilla, the avocado, the cheese, the pico - all could be tasted, tasted fresh, and added to deliciousness of this dish. Any dressing that dripped from the taco fell on the cabbage on the plate - making a tasty slaw. Get the chipotle shrimp tacos - seriously! Also save room for dessert because the marionberry cobbler is addictive. We got ours a la mode and it comes with vanilla bean ice cream - yum! All of the food has a comforting component which is why we visited Chowder Bowl so many times during our brief stay in Newport. Service was quick and friendly 2 out of the 3 times we visited. The time we came just for dessert, our waiter never came back to check on us after he brought the dessert. It was busy that night though. We will definitely be back on a future trip to Newport.

This is my favorite chowder joint in Newport. I've been undertaking a chowder comparison taste test between the Chowder Bowl and Mo's for two decades now, and--so far--I'd have to say that Chowder Bowl is the winner. Their "fish-wich" and "oyster-wich" have always been very good, but recently they got better--they are now serving their sandwiches on Panini's sourdough buns. During our most recent visit they had great, fresh, ripe tomatoes too--not the pink ones that roll off the back of the Sysco truck. A definite improvement on something that was already good. Their marionberry cobbler is delicious as well. I overheard one employee saying he'd worked there for 18 years. They're obviously doing something right. Check 'em out!

The chowder was creamy and amazing. The fried shrimp was not too oily but still crunchy! I loved it! Only had one worker serving with a full house and he did amazing, was super friendly!

Pulling into Newport, we were looking for a place with delicious clam chowder. What else are you going to eat while at the beach? We parked nearby and waked into the restaurant, being seated right away. The host and server were both very friendly and helpful. We ordered the clam chowder, fish tacos, garlic bread and the ham and swiss croissant (but subbing cheddar for Swiss). The clam chowder was just ok. It arrived with a pat of butter on top, which is something I'd never experienced before. The potatoes were thick and had been cooked perhaps a bit too long, making it seem like a potato soup with clams, rather than a clam chowder with potatoes. Ordering the fish tacos, my boyfriend thought he was getting grilled fish so was surprised to see the fish arrived fried. We doublechecked the menu and saw that both options were available. We were just surprised that the server didn't confirm the choice, as she did with other items. It was my boyfriends's fault that he didn't realize that they came either fried or grilled, but confirmation would have been nice. I ordered the garlic bread which I was told was delicious. It was good but not great in my opinion. For my lunch, I had the croissant. When I get a croissant, I want it light and flaky. Crumbs all over my plate! This croissant was dense and seemed more like white bread than a delicious French pastry. An OK sandwich otherwise, just now what I was looking for. There are so many other places to Newport, we'll try someplace else next time.

Friendly service and good food. I think the chowder here is far superior to Mo's (which pains me to say as a lifelong Oregonian). Had the delicious cheese bread appetizer as well. The location is a little hard to find using GPS as there are two Beach Drives right next to each other, but worth the effort.

Best chowder in town! Love their garlic onion cheesy bread and fish and chips is awesome too. Visit early to avoid long waiting time.

This is my favorite restaurant in the Newport area. The clam chowder is fabulous. But last night I had steamed clams (from Heaven). Large bowl with flavorful broth, hot melted butter on the side, lots of fresh clams, and delicious garlic bread. This place has remodeled and expanded. Friendly servers, quick service. What's not to love?!

Delicious! Chowder is great and creamy and yummy! Service was friendly and fast. Fish tacos are a great portion and fantastic!! We will be coming back!

Fish Tacos are huge! Order comes with two tacos. Almost as much fish as the order of fish & chips. I opted for corn tortillas which were fried a bit so they were crispy. I recommend the mango salsa with these as well.

The chowder was good. For the full enjoyment take your bowl just down the path and enjoy it while looking out the coast.

Best clam chowder and marionberry cobbler!!! Everything was piping hot and flavorful. Waitress was a delight and service fast! Will recommend to family and friends. One star left because we prefer sourdough bread for the clam chowder bowl but otherwise excellent!!!!

We hit the Chowder Bowl every time we're in town. Good chowder. Traditional new England style. Not fancy but real good. Fish and chips are good, too. Round fries. Fish is flakey, not watery or slimy inside as the franchise places sometimes serve it. Great location at Nye beach.

We were told that there would be a 20-minute wait for lunch, even at 1pm. Clearly this is a popular spot. A lot of people must have left at one time, because we were actually seated in 5 minutes. I was glad, because I was incredibly hungry! I started with a cup of clam chowder (it's the Chowder Bowl after all). It was very cold and dreary outside, so I definitely needed something to warm me up. My cup came with a big chunk of butter floating in the middle, which made it creamy and delicious. I liked that they opted for a much smaller dice on the potatoes, and they also seemed to have substituted a little butter for heavy cream. This made it a little runnier and soup-like than a typical chowder. Appetizer thoroughly scarfed down, I moved on to a Mate's size portion of their fish and chips. I feared that the Captain's size order would be better suited for dinner than for lunch. What came out was fresh, flaky cod with homemade tartar sauce. The crust was very crispy and well seasoned. The "chips" came in round slices rather than your typical long fries. This was an interesting change of pace, and reminded me of fried plantains, at least visually. I think this kind of slicing made them more like actual chips. The side of garlic bread that came with my entree was really tasty. I wish I had it sooner to pair with the chowder. I hadn't really saved room for dessert, but their marionberry cobbler sounded too good to pass up. I got mine a la mode, which always takes cobbler to another level of deliciousness. It came out piping hot. The crust was gooey, and the whole thing was just amazing and sweet. Great pick for lunch!

Good service. Food ok, the chowder lacks a lot of flavor, could use more clams and a bit of salt.

It was heavy rain when we arrived at Newport late around 8pm. We were able to find this place still open. We got the clam chowder and the fish and chips. The chowder was creamy with lots of clams and a chunk of butter floating on top. It was the right thickness. We got good portions of the fish and chips. The three big pieces of fried fish were nice and crispy but it should have been lifted from the fryer maybe thirty seconds earlier as it was a tad overcooked. The potatoes were thinly sliced into small crunchy disks. Not quite like potato chips, but it was pretty good. Although it was almost closing time, James, our server was very friendly and attentive. We didn't get the normal sour looks from wait staff that didn't want to be there. I guess he really deserves that employee of the year plaque on the wall!

Craving chowdah we ended up here after reading all the solid Yelp reviews. Again, Yelp came through! There was a 30 minute wait which sucks but you have an amazing ocean view to gaze at...and a wait usually means good stuff is being served. The spouse & I both ordered bowls of clam chowder and fried clams to share. The chowder was right on the money. Great thickness, yummy sweet clams and good potato ratio. Also, the chowder is presented with a pad a of butter in it. By the time it comes to the table, the butter is melty and sexy. Butter makes everything better so no complaints here. The clams were also great. The large sized clams were fried well making them tender and succulent. The clams came with "chips" question mark....they were potato rounds but they were more the consistency of a soggy french fry...they need to up their potato game, yo. The service was great...our waitress was super friendly and sweet. The busy boy was also very nice...I spoke spanish to him and he was amazed to find another Mexican person in that area of Oregon haha Overall, I will return next time I'm in Newport :)

Evidently this restaurant has been featured on several TV shows like the Today show. I'm not sure exactly what stands out about the Chowder Bowl, that would make it worthy of being featured on any TV show, but whatever it was, we didn't experience it. The location in the Nye Beach shopping area of Newport Oregon, is pretty great. After a long day of beach combing and souvenir shopping, the Chowder Bowl beckons you to take a load off and have a nice hot bowl of Clam Chowder. However, once you actually get the Chowder, you realize that although it's good, it's not extraordinary, in fact it's exactly ordinary. But don't order the chili cheese fries either, because first of all they aren't fries. They are thick sliced potato chips with little to offer in the flavor or texture department. The chili is strangely sweet and tangy with just a little spice, which is not what I want on my fries. Perhaps we tried the wrong things, but considering how many other food options there are in the neighborhood, I don't think we'll be giving the Chowder Bowl another shot for a while.

My seafood loving date thought the food was great. As a vegetarian, I knew the veg item wouldn't be great (and it was not even good!) but they get points for having a veg option. A. Singular. And unappealing. But that's better than most seafood joints and I seriously appreciate the nod. Everyone there raved about the clam chowder. Baked potato was yummy. The chipotle black beam burger was dry, overcooked and lackluster. The waitress was super nice until she noticed I wasn't eating my meal, then she never checked in again, dropped of to go boxes with a smile but said nothing about the nearly full meal left behind. It wasn't worth boxing so seafood lovers go and be prepared to be ignored if you're dissatisfied. Salad bowls are huge and fried potatoes are fresh. Pretty place, mellow vibe, easy NYE beach location, hardworking staff, selection of beers on tap. Costly but it is a touristy spot- seafood platter was $20.95. Black bean burger was about $12.95 more than it was worth. Point loss is not for the crap veg food, it's for dodging me once knowing it wasn't good. And is go 4 stars except price comparison to others in area. I'd go back an just order a side, let melt seafood loving friends have their chowder and pay the tab.

I heard many good things about the Chowder Bowl and decided to have lunch there. My partner had the cajun fish and chips and felt they were done perfectly. She prefers this white fish to the heavier tuna. She also had the clam chowder with butter and it was as advertised! The turkey sandwich I ordered left a bit to be desired. But I do give a big thumbs up for their disk chips for they were mighty good. The bread had a peculiar odor to it and was stale. Very dry and not inspired....I guess they want folks to order only seafood? Anyway,I won't be ordering that again and will stick to seafood next time. My sandwich experience is the reason for the 3 stars. Comfortable place to eat and the service was OK. And right near historic Nye Beach on a lovely side street. Great location.

  • Michael R.

Walked in off the street without reading any reviews or taking any recommendations. We were surprisingly pleased, the food was very good, the service attentive for a busy Friday night and no unusual wait time for anything. I had the crab sandwich, which on initial look appeared small; however, I was pleasantly surprised at the density in the lump of crab meat that was served. The proton was satisfying and the flavor more than a mouthful. Earlier in the day we did lunch with the cross town rivals, Mo's and I'd have to say, if going for chowder, The Chowder Bowl wins hands down. We also compared the marionberry cobbler and again Chowder Bowl. In summary, I'd happily return.

Yea, It was one of the best Fish and chips. They have awesome garlic bread, too. Clam chowder Soup is not bad. I will visit here again if I ever make it back to Newport, OR.

Went there for lunch with a group of 5 and had a great meal, was seated quickly. Ordered the turkey club and fries-- great sandwich. Other people ordered the chowder but one had to return theirs cause it was cold. The meal was good, service was good, tad spendy but it was worth it.

Great food!!!! Bad service. There was one waitress carrying the whole place and it was BUSY. There was a very young girl who strolled around looking at tables but completely ignoring empty cups and people who needed help. The older hostess lady was stomping around the place looking angry. She literally took my plate out from under me while I was still eating it. The food really was great though. I had fish and chips and clam chowder.

I was new and alone in Newport which small and pretty city. I searched Yelp and decided stop by "Chowder Ball" . There was long line. People waited on outside. I waited about 15min( not bad, I could chat with new people:) ). Chowder was great .It was great choice. Chunk clam , creamy ... I ordered steam clam. Clam was Big, fresh. It was good combination with garlic bread. If I go Newport OR, I will definitely go there again

Wow! Their chowder is De-lish, probally even with Mo's though i like this chowder for different reasons. It is much thinner and less chunky than mo's and lacks bacon, but it is quite flaverful. The service is exelent, and though it was packed, they returned many times and were quick to help.

A pretty nice place to have a bowl of clam chowder. Stopped by for lunch with the family and had a variety of things. Love the the chips that come with fish and chips. They are shaped like potato chips. Nice and lite and crispy. The place is located on a narrow street with limited parking. Went here on spring break and they were busy. Got right in and was served pretty quickly. I had the chowder cannon bowl. Love bread bowls. The chowder is nice and creamy without any distracting spices or vegetables that some places use. This is one of the better chowders I've found.

One of my most favorite restaurants!!! Courteous staff, great Canon ball chowder. I always bring my friends and family here when they head my way. Thank for being so great, chowder bowl!

AMAZING chowder! I wanted to try a bit of everything so I had the fried shrimp and subbed coleslaw for the fries. Coleslaw was nice and creamy and the shrimp were fresh and crispy and delicious. It's a smallish place so there may be a wait but it's worth it.

    (4)

Best chowder I've had in Newport so far! Very creamy, a bowl will definitely fill you up. And $6.50, not bad. Highly recommend.

  • Joe T.

My date was from New England and thought their clam chowder is among the best she's ever had. She had grilled Oysters with salad since much of the menu offers everything fried; they offered to grill it! I had the shrimp louie salad and it was large, super fresh and yummy. The service was great and definitely "local", super prompt and attentive without being intrusive.. On to atmosphere, it's called "Chower Bowl" so I wouldn't walk in expecting fine dining but while it was busy and the wood tables were a little sticky it was totally clean.

    (5)
  • Marshall K.

My wife and I both had the fish and chips. I had the clam chowder. We both liked the clam chowder. The fish was cod which we both liked. My wife thought the breading was good but I thought that I would've preferred it to be crisper with more breaking.

My husband and I were on our honeymoon. And someone had suggested the chowder bowl to us, because they said they had excellent clam chowder. And so we went and it was so very delicious. Honestly they have the best clam chowder in newport. we ate everywhere and the chowder bowl was the best place. we went to eat there twice. I had the clam chowder in a sour dough bread bowl the first time and it was spectacular and the second time I had the coconut shrimp with chips and it was to die for. :) my husband had the fish tacos and the we're massive And very very flavorful! Then he had a hamburger which was just as delicious as the fish tacos. We are definitely going to go back again every time we visit newport and I think everyone should do the same !!

The chowder bowl was a great restaurant! In addition to great clam chowder, they have amazing dinners. Their salads were enormous. I ordered fish tacos and could only eat about half because the plate was so big. The waiter was extremely friendly and very accommodating. He even arranged to have a special sandwich made for my very picky child. The restaurant was very clean and comfortable. I would definitely make a trip there again.

    (5)
  • Lora K.

I have dined there twice in June. The Clam Chowder is okay but definitely not the best in the area. The service was good, we had a very attentive waiter. A little pricey for such a casual place. Probably won't go back, there are too many good competitors close by.

The Newport Chowder Bowl at Nye Beach again wins our votes for the BEST Clam Chowder on the Oregon Coast! We had two bowls of their wonderful thick and creamy clam chowder ($6.25 each), shared an order of Garlic Onion Cheese Bread ($4.50), and two pieces of deep fried Pacific True Cod ($7.00), just to try. Delicious! We always wait until mid-afternoon to go, just to miss the lineup at 11am, when they open, and the lunch crush. Service is courteous, quick and accurate, which is hard to do in a restaurant as busy as the Chowder Bowl, and our server, James, has been a mainstay here for as long as we can remember.

I found it to be quite difficult to find healthy eats while on the coast, all the super heavy chowders, fried fish and chips. I was in search of a yummy salad when we stopped at The Chowder Bowl for lunch. I had the Mandarin Chicken Salad, and while the chicken was crispy, not grilled, it was totally worth the little splurge! The salad portion was HUGE and it was served with a cup of their chowder, how could I say no? The chowder here was the best I had while on the coast. Great flavor and real melty butter served on top. Hubby had the fish and chips and he loved it. Service and location is great, prices were very fair. We would definitely come back next time around!

  • T Y.

Awesome Clam Chowder. Then again, every place in Newport has awesome clam chowder. I did rank this one as the best of them though but there wasn't a huge difference. I also had their coconut battered shrimp. Excellent. Nice and crispy without feeling excessively greasy. Service was excellent too. My fiancee couldn't decide which beer she wanted so the waitress offered samplers until we found a satisfactory one. I like when I don't have to ask for a drink refill (for bottomless ones) and it just happens. It means they're on the ball and paying attention which is how you earn good tips. :)

Ordered Clam Chowder in a bread bowl (cannonball) and clam strips and chips. The best clam chowder I've had on the Oregon coast so far. The clam strips were amazing as well with plenty of clam inside. The chips are potato slices fried to a good crisp on the outside and perfectly done on the inside. The only disappointment was the garlic bread. It was bland with almost no flavor. Highly recommend this place over the other "famous" place in town.

Chowder is amazing but the rest of the food is meh. Fish always overdone along with everything else. Over battered too. Just come here for the chowder only

Chowder bowl is a neat seaside restaurant! With plenty of seafood choices it's hard to decide what to get. I got a cup of clam chowder because I wanted to get a second menu item, which was the oyster poboy with fresh potato chips. So this was my first time trying either of these dishes, I had store bought clam chowder and it did not compare to chowder bowl's clam chowder! Being that they had several awards for their clam chowder hanging by the door. The chowder was delicious you must try it! As for the oyster poboy, it wasn't exactly my cup of tea, the flavors were exceptional but since this was my first time trying oysters the texture was too gooey! But I toughed it out and actually enjoyed it. If you like oysters I'm sure you'll like the sandwich. My wife got the fish and chips (potato chips) this dish was also exceptional the fish had a good texture and wasn't soggy nor oily at all. On top of this exceptional food the tartar sauce was probably the best tartar sauce I have ever had and just went so well with both dishes! This place was exceptional and you must try it!

Best chowder on the coast! Everyone I've brought here agrees. It's an extremely casual hole in the wall kind of place; but they know how to make a hearty tasty bowl of chowder!

NEVER had a bad meal here and the staff is the nicest! Had a group of 10 and all were satisfied. Clam Chowder, Burgers- Hey, we all ate something different and no complaints. Their Fish and Chips are the best in my book, no kidding! You can't go wrong here! If I were to some it up in one word it would be "Consistent".

This as a spur of the moment restaurant my fiance and I decided to try on our vacation. I am glad I did. It is a pretty busy place. We were greeted at the door, and were seated also by the door (not the best place I might add, but it did not dampen the experience). We started with the clam chowder, which was the best I tasted for the entirety of my trip. It was thick and creamy. I ordered a salad, which came in the largest bowl I had ever seen. I had no hopes of actually finishing it. The salad was decent as far as a salad goes. The waitress was on the ball, and extremely helpful with their beer selection. She even let me sample a few before committing to one. Wouldn't mind trying the place again if I ever travel down to Newport again.

  • Don S.

Stopped in for a late lunch and we each ordered a cup of the chowder plus fish & chips, and fried oysters & chips. The fish was perfect as were the oysters, everything came to the table so hot we had to let it cool down some. Food should be served this way rather than the usual luke warm. The chowder had lots of clam pieces in it but had the lingering taste of potato, not that of clams. The chowder was good but not a knockout. Service by the staff was pleasant and friendly, we would go back and try something else on the menu but would leave off the chowder.

We will never be back and I cannot imagine why/how anyone would have an experience above a 1 here. My wife and I live about 30 miles away from this place and decided to try it. The reviews are polarized about this place. Either you love it or hate it. Sadly, we went based on Google reviews. If I had seen the reviews here...we could've saved $32, gas wasted and frustration avoided. When we walked in we were greeted with a smile and told to sit anywhere. Our server (male) was great at the beginning. I ordered the shrimp sandwich and my wife had the fried fish-wich. We both ordered soda. And ordered a cup of clam chowder on the side which was $4.50. When our soup arrived it was literally 1/2 a cup. That's right, this little dinky cup of chowder for $4.50. When you live on the coast, clam chowders are dim-a-dozen, so when you charge $4.50 for a 1/2 cup of soup...it better be excellent. It was 'meh' forgettable at best. Our main course arrived and my shrimp sandwich was a clump of hot small bay shrimp with no sauce nor seasoning, just bland. The coleslaw was bland...this whole plate had NO FLAVOR at all. But, my major issue was the piss-poor customer service. I timed it, from the time we got our food until the time we decided to go and get our own check, 33 min. In 33 min., our waiter NEVER CAME BACK, not once...not to check on us, not to refill drinks, nothing. Then when I looked to see where he was, he was leaning against the wall. After 33 min., we had to go to get our own check and the 17 year old at the cash register didn't have the courtesy to ask us how everything was. No tip was left, no tip was earned...in fact we should've been compensated for paying $32 for sub-par food and piss-poor service. We will never be back. I encourage others to stay clear of this dive. **EDIT AFTER COMMENT RESPONSE BY OWNER MIKE FRANKLIN** After thinking about it for a while and discussing it with my wife I wanted to write a response to Mike F., Owner of The Chowder Bowl. Mike, while I do thank you for your response and offer to reimburse us for our meal, I'm going to have to decline. Now, I know that you offered and I'm turning it down. There were several items that I wanted to address in your reply comment to my review that I think I need to address or clear-up: 1.) I understand the 'busy' coastal summer rush that you are referring too and that the 'busy rush' can be overwhelming to the most seasoned of wait-staff. When we walked in on a late Sunday morning right after you had opened, it wasn't busy, nor was anyone rushed. I'm not sure why our waiter was leaning against the post for nearly 30 minutes if the 'summer rush' was crushing down on him at 11:30am on a Sunday. 2.) If I owned a business that relied on customer service, I personally would never use the phrase, " I am sorry that our service was not up to your standards. " NEVER. That makes it sound like that we have such high standards that no-one can reach them. If wanting our server to come back and check on us after the food was delivered, let alone not come back for 30 min. and NEVER bringing the check...are 'standards' then yes, he didn't meet them. 3.) As far as the chowder was concerned: Okay, I didn't have a measuring tool there to measure it exactly, but lets say it was 1 cup of chowder. 1 cup is 8oz. divided by the $4.50 cost is about $.56 an ounce...that is pretty high a price for not even offering sides for most of your meals. Bottom line. Thank you for trying to appear sincere and give me the opportunity to call you and get my money back. I would rather leave it as is and not deal with The Chowder Bowl again.

This chowder is pretty hard to beat. If you're craving Clam Chowder in Newport, this is your place. The thing that impressed me most was the service. Our waiter (working the lunch shift on 2/16/14) was on point. He had our drinks out in less than three minutes, our orders and food completed in less than 15. Important to know the place was filling up quickly, and he stayed right on top of it. Probably one of the best servers I've ever witnessed, and I work in the restaurant training business ( waitrainer.com ). This guy could put on a clinic for servers across the country. Definitely made an impression on me. I enjoyed the food, and my ice cold Black Butte Porter, but the service that day was every bit of 5 stars.

Very good! Had chowder in bowl and fried small oysters! Both were perfect and great service! Cute place in Newport, Oregon

We did a 12 day trek through Oregon and Washington, and i had perhaps 6 or 7 bowls of clam chowder, the one I had at the Chowder Bowl, I am declaring the winner. It was the perfect consistency, great flavor balance, with chunks of clam and potato throughout. It was also served with a pat of butter on top, butter really does make everything better. Our server was absolutely wonderful. I had the fish and chips, the chips were great, the fish, not as flavorful as I'd hoped, and not the right cooked consistency. But overall, I'd come back, simply for the service and the chowder. Be prepared to wait, though, as it is a hoppin' joint - for good reason!

Craving some good chowder? This is the great place to checkout. It's a few feet away from the beach and many other cut little shops. I had the chowder in the bread bowl and almost finished the whole bread bowl except for the bottom. I was full for hours. The services is very, very, very friendly and attentive. We found this place through yelp and glad it was as good as everyone says it was =)

Picked up a to-go order of chowder. It was Fantastic. Would've liked to try it in a sourdough bowl, next time.

Great food, generous portions, friendly staff :) The chowder is awesome and definitely lives up to the reputation. I had a cup that came along with another dish I'd ordered, now I wish I'd ordered a whole BOWL of the chowder, it was that good! :) :) I will definitely go again next time we visit, and I'll recommend it to anyone I know who visits or even just passing through.

Food is yummy but it gets pretty crowded in there. The french fries are plain but surprisingly really tasty. Simple is good.

This will be a uniquely bad review. I've read reviews for this restaurant on several sites and most of them are good. Here's my story. We walked in off the street to eat one night. They weren't very busy and we were seated right away. My wife ordered a glass of wine and I ordered a beer. The server carded my wife which was odd since she's 39 and then made her take it out of her wallet and he took it in the back somewhere without any warning. He's just gone with her ID. That made us nervous with all of the ID theft going around. Then he brings me the wrong beer. It wasn't a complicated request and my wife was already offended so we informed the server we were leaving and why. We probably won't go back.

My wife and I were craving Fish and Chips and while walking around Nye Beach we saw the Chowder Bowl and it's menu posted by the door. They had what we wanted so we went in and a friendly server told us to sit anywhere. We were greeted quickly and placed our order. Before long we each had our plates that were overflowing with crispy chips and 3 good sized pieces of cod. It was delicious. Today we were craving a salad and we had seen these enormous Cobb Salads when we were there yesterday. After a walk on the beach we headed in and placed our order for two Cobb salads which came with a cup of chowder. The chowder arrived very quickly and we new when we saw the pat of butter melting into the thick soup that it would be delicious. It was every bit as good as we imagined. Our salads came and not only were they enormous but they were presented very nicely in wonderful bowls. We will be going back again and can't wait for our next visit.

Based on Yelp.com's reviews we decided to check this place out over the weekend. There is really nothing good to say about our experience. Slow on greeting and delivering drinks. We ordered an appetizer. The appetizer never came. I ordered the "Special" - two 3oz Halibut fillets and chips. The chips were unseasoned and lying on a bed of dry cabbage.... only to find out I was paying $16.95 for this. My wife received her cajun shrimp "entree" - 10 shrimp in a dish with a piece of garlic toast. No Rice. No Side. This dish was $10.95. It was sent back as the shrimp was not up to temperature and bland. Our friend visiting from the Mid-West also ordered the Halibut Special... and was as impressed as myself; not at all. Her 5 year old daughter was happy with the hot dog!! We have all worked in the service industry. Things could have been handled better and more professionally.

I was walking along Nye Beach one day and came across two clams aiming a long iron tube out to sea... I asked the clams what they were doing. They shook their shells and replied that one of their friends was caught eating at the Chowder Bowl. Curious still, I prodded further into the relationship of the long iron barrel. Sighing very deeply, they told me that the dropped their associate into the apparatus, filled it with gun powder, and was just about to light the fuse when I irritatingly interrupted. I begged one more second of their time, to explain further the task they had set before them. Clams, not well known for their high intelligence, looked about with his many eyes and whispered to me. Well, the other patrons of Chowder Bowl were calling him a "cannonball" so we are going to fire him! OK, dumb story, GREAT food. The clam chowder is really nice. Not heavy, not greasy, tasty and clammy. I can see why it turns clams to cannibalism. Their fresh oysters are fried quite nicely and I found their pomme frites to be quite interesting. I normally do not care for potatoes in general, but their coin cut, lightly-fried popped potatoes with their fresh made cocktail sauce was quite good. The steamers we ordered was pretty large and every shell held a fat juicy clam. The place was packed full at 2 p.m. on a rainy and cold October Saturday. That should be enough evidence to eat here. GREAT FIND in Newport. Aloha.

This place gets recommended everywhere in newport. And for good reason. The meals are amazing. Friendly attentive service and nice clean area. Little small but gives it a great homey feel.

Great location in Nye Beach and Excellent customer service. Split the Captains Platter /plate? with a friend and ordered extra cup of chowder so we both got one. The fried calamari, clams, oysters, shrimp and cod were great. Not greasy at all and a very generous portion. The calamari and clams were tender not rubbery like they so often are. We really liked the chips which are really round fries not potato chips. The chowder was good, better than Mo's for sure though not the best I've ever had. Stopped back by and got the bread pudding with brandy sauce to go for later. Went back and got it again the next night because it was so darn good. All in all was in three times and all three servers gave great service. My friend had been coming here for years but it was the first time for me. I'll be back for sure.

We decided to check out Chowder Bowl while on vacation. We all got the clam chowder. It was quite good. We tried many clam chowders while on vacay and this tied with Blackfish Grill as the top spot. For my entree I had fried clams and chips. The fried clams were quite big and very good. The chips were average.

Yelp failed us! We looked up all these really good reviews, and after dining there - really guys? We came here because we thought it might be one of those amazing little hole-in-the-wall places that's probably way better than the big dog in town (Moe's). Not the case. If you are just coming off the beach and have multiple hungry, whining kids and minimal expectations for your tastebuds, this place won't fail you. You will find many options and fill your bellies. On Chowder: However, if you are like me and 50% of the reason you come to the Oregon coast is to enjoy a steaming bowl of delicious chowder - at any price - then this is not the place for you. Really, you sell your base to go? It's called Cambell's! Find it in any supermarket! I'm not saying it was inedible, but the name implies that the chowder must be pretty amazing. And if you are the chef of the Chowder Bowl, please take offense! There is nothing remarkable - no yummy chunks of clam, no hint of kick or spice, no secret ingredients, not fresh chunks of potato or even celery. Not a thing to distinguish it or even imply that it is fresher by virtue being located on the coast. Lamsauce. On Specials: Everything on the menu looks like I should freaking love it! Both my boyfriend and I got the specials - I got a dungenous crab louie salad and he the cod sandwich. Around $18 each. My salad was "ok", but really? Dressing on the side? Salad mix out of a package? Try a little harder, good lord! I would have paid $12 max if I knew what I would be getting. And if I order a special, I want it served as the chef intended - not made for your crotchety retired grandmother who isn't sure if she likes thousand island! My boyfriend's sandwich was also a bummer - too salty, had to remove the top piece of bread, went unfinished. There goes $40 for the cheap stuff you can buy at the grocery store and season better yourself. 2 out of 5 stars because it looks clean, our server was sweet and attentive, we were seated almost immediately and there were no mix-ups or long waits. But the missing 3 stars are on account of the food. So disappointed!

A good place if you want a quaint bowl of chowder to warm you up on a nw day at the beach. We had the classic clam chowder which was good except we could've done without the chunk of butter they add to the top. We also had the fish tacos which were quite flavorless even with the mango salsa. I was expecting something light and refreshing but got something bland and not at the quality level I was expecting for the price. My husband had the Half Pound of "Fire" Sauteed Cajun Prawns, Which they serve "a la carte" which is a weird dinner entree to not include any sides (though it did have a couple pieces of bread) but it needed something to go with all the spice. They were quite tasty just not a rounded out dinner. We were expecting more for our money especially for a 4 star rating on yelp.. it was more glorified diner beach food. I wish our money could've been spent elsewhere.

The service was kind and very quick. To be honest I don't know quite how the staff pulled it off , but we walked into a full restaurant and within five minutes they had arranged a setup able to seat all nine of us. Now this might not sound impressive but the group in front of us had seven people and the group behind us had twelve and all of us got seated promptly, though the last group did have to sit outside. The highlights of our meal were the fish n chips and the chowder. Though we did have a few appetizers I'd probably pass on them the next time we come round because they really were not anything special. A few of us had chowder in breadbowls but unless you absolutely need the bread then just get a cup of the good stuff because it is far less expensive and the bread didn't add much to the meal.

It was between this place or the sports bar next door. It was windy and cold, I wanted some chowder. This place only has clam chowder. Honestly, I'm not impressed with this place. My friend got the chowder. I wanted some corn chowder, but they only had clam. I got the prawns on "fire." I think they should really rename that dish to prawns on a salt mine because the 1/2 lb of shrimp tasted like it was marinated in salt then salted again when cooked. it was like a 1:2 ratio of shrimp to salt. Totally disappointing. Service was fine. Food isn't too impressive probably because they get customers from the ample location they have to the beach. Either way, my friend said the chowder wasn't good. I figure when a restaurant names themselves chowder bowl, they'd at least have multiple variations of chowder or homemade style chowder. disssapointing

Their clam chowder was one of the worst I've had. I think Campbell's tastes better. I could taste the flour or whatever thickener they use in their soup. Their fish and chips were just okay as well.

We read all the reviews and since my husband loves chowder, we had to try this place. We ordered. The chowder was good, not perfect, but solid. My chili, however, looked like Dennison's. It tasted, well, terrible. I sent it back. Then dinner came. Fried items were okay, nothing to write home about. Son's burger, ordered with catsup and bacon only came loaded with vegetables. My burger was raw in the middle. They did take the burgers off the menu, but in addition, we waited 1.5 hours HOURS for this meal. We were STARVING when we left, and went to another restaurant. I was shocked after waiting SO LONG for service and then being served raw food that we returned that they charged us ANYTHING. The place may be okay for chowder, but you had better have time to wait.

Some of the best Clam Chowder known to man! Get it in a sourdough bowl, with the shrimp on top, Slumgolian style I think is what they call it. Good Stuff!
