High Blood Pressure at Applebee's

Most of the foods served at Applebee's restaurants are high in sodium. Unless you are visiting the restaurant or dining here in the group, there are hardly any options from the main meals if you wish to keep your blood pressure in check. You can rely on a few salad options though. If lucky, you may find low-sodium ribs as well at the restaurant.

Foods to Avoid at Applebee's for High Cholesterol

If you have high cholesterol, then you must avoid eating sandwiches, wraps, and tacos at Applebee's. While the salads and soups sound healthy, you must skip the Fiesta Chopped Salad and Loaded Potato Soup at Applebee's. Best BBQ you can get if you're not in Texas or one of the other locations known for great BBQ. Prices are fair, the portions are generous and the food is quite good. The BBQ is a little dry for my tastes but still quite good. Excellent wait staff! If they tell you a particular item is very good, believe them! Well worth the ride from Portland several times a year.

Very cute spot off the beat and path, give 'em a try as an alternative to some popular Hood River venue. I was underwhelmed by the acclaimed Spicy Green Beans and Pear Slaw. The BBQ plate was good. Good local beer selection. VERY friendly staff! Satisfied overall, not blown away, not disappointed. Would definitely return.

Just go down to Amy M's review. Was gonna write one but she says it all. Went to the store on Friday. Enjoyed it. Went back on Sat just for some bbq. Wish I would of read her review before. Honestly. Worst bbq I ever had.

Absolutely amazing! Growing up in Parkdale I would eat here all the time and it never gets old!! Cornbread Sandy makes desserts to die for and Justin makes delicious savory food! A usual of mine is always the garlic parmesean french fries (with a side of ranch of course!) & a local brew that they carry (they change weekly). The service is fast and the environment is very cozy. The fireplace is going during the cold times and they have a train that runs on a track throughout the restaurant to entertain the kids. They have a big menu and the deals during happy hour are a steal! Waitresses always check up on you and are extremely accommodating to any need. My mother orders takeout 3 times a week from here for her family, and they have her order down perfect. They always remember faces and even remember what you order most of the time! It's a great place for locals and a great place to visit! You can enjoy one of Sandy's famous desserts or head down the block to the local ice cream shop.

This place has definitely earned it's stars. It is much more than just bbq. Had the spinach salad and it was fresh and delicious. My husband had ceaser salad with pork BBQ and said it was delicious too. The ambience is not fancy but if you enjoy great food go here!

After spending a wonderful afternoon at Stoltz Winery in Hood River we had supper at this BBQ spot. We ate inside and at least three servers took excellent care of us. Staff were friendly and professional. After a short look at the menu, food was ordered and lovely cold beer was in our hands. When the food arrived the plate could barely contain what amounted to the best ribs I've had in years. Pear coleslaw and garlic mashed spuds were my side choices. Everything about the meal was memorable. Between the food and the wine I may just move here!

Spent the morning picking apples out on the Fruit Loop and the afternoon at the Hood River Hops Fest. In between, we stopped here for some lunch. Some BBQ sure sounded good and as we pulled up to park, this little BBQ joint SMELLED good. Got my tastebuds revving instantly. Unassuming little dining room. There was a model train circling the perimeter. I always wanted one of those--in my house. I think it's a residual Mr. Rogers thing. Anyway, we were given a very friendly greeting right when we walked in. We were told to sit wherever we like. Prices weren't exactly cheap, but that seems to be the case with just about every BBQ these days. I ordered a 1/2 rack of pork ribs for $16. My wife got a prime rib sandwich for $14. Mine came with two sides, the sandwich came with one. I opted for BBQ beans and cornbread. My wife went with the cornbread salad--a unique menu item that turned out to be pretty tasty. My ribs were really good. Very, very meaty and tender. The meat literally fell off the bone. I would have preferred a bit more spicy bite in the BBQ sauce, but that's a minor gripe. The lady loved her prime rib sandwich. It was really just a nice, big slice of prime rib atop a piece of Texas toast and smothered with onions and mushrooms. We ate every bite and topped off the meal with a slice of coconut cream pie that we had to share. This place is really getting a 4 1/2 star rating from me. Wish Yelp let us do that.

Okay, so I have just finished dinner at AVW BBQ and I have had to let a few notches out of the old belt thanks to the AMAZING meal I just had at Apple Valley BBQ! What makes this place awesome is the simplicity of the menu and the care put into each of these simple items! Can't go wrong on the pulled pork, BBQ chicken....but the ribs with the spicy sauce won the day on the meats. Let me close by telling you how much the side dishes actually rivaled the meat! You must try the spicy green beans, the baked beans and the pear slaw. It was from the overeating on the sides that has made my gastronomic chambers stretch to capacity. It is the locals who keep this place open I learned tonight, but if you're a tourist visiting Hood River or a skier on the way up or back from Mt. Hood, sneak your ass in here and act and the eat like a local! Bottom-line, Apple Valley BBQ rivals Pod'nahs now for the best BBQ in the state of Oregon right now.

YUM!!! Just went there for the second time, and it was even better than the first time, and everyone in our party of 10 agreed! Two in our party are from Tulsa, and they claimed it was better BBQ than most places they've had back home, so that's something, right? :) The big hits were the mac-n-cheese with pulled pork added, the cornbread and pretty much any of the other meat dishes. All around delish!

A cute little diner-esque spot on the "Fruit Loop"! It gets really busy so come early or late for lunch! I got the Pulled Pork Sandwich with a side of pear coleslaw ($10). The bread is huge as is the portion of meat so you'll definitely be stuffed if you eat the whole thing. The pork is pretty tasty and their bbq sauces are really good (they sell their sauces)! The pear coleslaw was ok but it didn't have as much pear in it as I would've hoped for. Cornbread is solid too! There is only one bathroom for which there was a constant line for!

We ate here for lunch on 7/25/15 while doing the Fruit Loop. We had visited the Apple Valley Country Store earlier and saw the barbecue sauce and had to stop her to try it. I know we did not eat any normal BBQ items, like Ribs, but the two sandwiches we had we're pretty good. I had the Smoked Poblano Chile Burger with garlic Parmesan Fries and my wife had the Grilled Chicken Bacon & Swiss with the same fries. Both sandwiches were good. I love the combinations of poblano peppers in the cheese. The onion slices where a bit think, but we just took a few off. My wife really enjoyed the chicken and actually finished it. Normally she will not eat an entire burger type sandwich. The waitress was not sure of the garlic and thought it might be powder. I can attest that it was real garlic and very strong. Both our tongues were burning an hour later. Very good garlic. I would recommend this place if you are around. A lot of regulars were in there. The waitresses new their order before they sat down. That says a lot about a place.

Decent food, but I wouldn't say amazing. Very friendly servers, who were on top of their game. I got the prime rib dinner ($25, friday/saturday only) and it was decent. I didn't taste much in the way of smoked/bbq though. The potato bacon soup was just OK, and the Garlic Parmean Fries were Ok, but not that big of a deal. Prices on the other things seemed fair. I would have given four stars, but the inside of the restaurant has horrible ventilation, so the dining area is full of smoke, which burns your eyes. It made the experience not fun. My eyes were irritated for like 3 hours afterwards.

This review is for the pulled pork and ribs I had at the Apple Valley Country Store, the sister location. They are so close together that I figured it was still an adequate reflection of the primary location's quality. I try my best to be a fair eatery reviewer at all times, though I do like to be expressive. Here goes. 1) Ok, here's something people need to understand about real pulled pork: YOU SHOULD NOT NEED SAUCE TO MAKE IT JUICY. Apple Valleys pork was average on the toughness scale, and definitely was not yummy to eat on its own. So you are left to slather lots of BBQ sauce over the bland pork. 2) And now, a word about salt. Salt is a lovely ingredient, add it to the beginning of cooking and you get the joy of enhancing any flavor it touches. Too bad Apple Valley doesn't add adequate salt, because then you're left with some very hum drum meat flavors. No wait, it's ok, we have sauce. 3) Pear coleslaw? Ok, I counted three measly chunks of pear in my (bland and not nearly mayonnaissey enough) coleslaw. Please, it's cabbage with like three little pear chunks. Oh, and no salt. 4) Beans were nothing special. Just canned or something with some brown sugar probably. 5) Ok, the ribs. Tough yet undercooked. They were lukewarm and hadn't been slowly cooked long enough for them to become tender. Not enough sauce could fix them. Oh, AND THEY HADNT BEEN SEASONED EITHER. Poor salt, what do they have against you?..... 6) This is just a little tid bit for those of you wanting to visit the Country Store. It's kinda neat, they do have samples, but they day I went, there was this weird animal flesh fish market odor inside. Not overwhelming, just enough to make you feel like it's ok to go ahead and sample some jam... And then instantly regret sampling said jam. If any of the staff at Apple Valley reads this, what the heck guys, can you not smell that??? It is kinda faint, but it's rank man. Is there like a meat counter in the back that needs to be bleached? Blergh! Ok, that's all. Overall, as a Hood River resident, almost every restaurant is a tourist trap. Everything has its nice little logo and marketing, but people seem to be under financial stress to the point where they lose sight of why they opened their little restaurants in the first place. We can do better, Hood River can do better.

After two days of hiking on the Benson Plateau I was ready for a drink and some food. Now that I have eaten at Apple Valley BBQ I can safely say I have eaten at 1/3 rd of this town's establishments. Here is my take: Service: A + Super nice waitress Food: Excellent. The prime rib sandwich was awesome. A Atmosphere: Clearly in the top 3rd of eating establishments in town. A+ Drinks: Failing grade here. Beer is fine but wine is awful, over priced and I'd dubious quality. F Pleasant, well priced and fun. Deep six the wine and you will enhance your stature in the race for the número uno shop in town.

This BBQ house hidden away in Parkdale was superb. Everything was flavored just right. I tried the jerked chicken which was fantastic! The flavor did not overwhelm, I was pleasantly surprised that all the food was prepared in a well balanced way. Nothing was smothered in sauce. The food is great and the service is friendly.

After a stop at the Apple Valley Country Store in Hood River (for pumpkin milkshakes), we were told about Apple Valley BBQ (the owners are behind both places) as a possible destination for lunch. Sounded good to both of us so away we went. There honestly aren't many places to eat in Parkdale as it is a very small town. BBQ sounded good on this rainy weekend day. BBQ sounds good to me anytime actually so you probably shouldn't listen to me. Lately Sue and I have been trying to eat a bit less so with that in mind we ended up splitting the Pulled Pork Sandwich ($9 and comes with choice of one side) and getting a second side to go with that. The Spicy Green Beans are amazing. They are made with one of the jams that they had for sale at the Country Store. I believe it was a Habanero Jam. Not super spicy, but definitely super flavorful. The Garlic Parmesan fries were very good as well. The Pulled Pork had a nice smokiness to it. You can tell that some care went into making this BBQ. Nice BBQ sauces on the table to pair with it. A regular and a spicy. Wasn't spicy to me, but still very good. I would come back here solely for the green beans. They were that good. Nice that Parkdale has some good BBQ. I can absolutely see myself coming back here again.

So delicious. I highly recommend the jerk chicken sandwich, although the pulled pork was also tasty. The ribs fell off the bone, and the sauce was the best in the west.

Delicious! My husband and I stopped aroubd 430 on a Sunday to get a bite. It was a very late lunch for us, but ordered off the dinner menu given the time. We had the corn bread fritters (aren't those called hush puppies?).. whatever they're called we found them tasty served with the jalepeno jam. We shared their spinach salad - crisp and tasty. Perfect really. That spinach was clearly local since it was nothing like the insipid, limp baby spinach offered at most places. Candied nuts- yum! We asked if sharing the bbq 1/4 rack and pulled pork plate would be enough for two people. The waitress said most people have trouble finishing it alone. We ordered it with pear coleslaw and spicy greenbeans. It came with soup or salad - we went with salad (also with more fresh local greens - yum!) The ribs and pork were perfectly smokey and tender. I enjoyed my share with a bit of their spicy bbq sauce. Both items were well spiced on their own - I'm a sauce fan though. The coleslaw was ok. I'm a more clean sort of Asian slaw fan - slaw without mayo please. However the spicy greenbeans were cooked perfectly, as in not cooked to death, and spiced with something like a sweet chili sauce. Since we had nothing planned for dinner later in the evening we ordered a full rack of ribs with a double serving of green beans to go. Really looking forward to eating them! Do yourself a favor - drive out to Parkdale and get some high quality bbq!

We enjoy going to different BBQ establishments. The ribs that I received was so tender and had the perfect smoke ring. The sides that I had seemed to complement the main dish. The pit master is very good in his style, and oir waitress was very good.

Best BBQ I've ever had in Oregeon. Baked beans, cornbread salad, pear slaw... It's all awesome. We cold actually smell the joint before we could see it. Everything is made in house, using simple ingredients. We live in Sherwood (South of Portland) and we would drive to Parkdale, just to eat at AV BBQ.

Stopped over here before our visit to mount hood in the recommendation from a fruit stand. I was told the pulled pork was amazing, so we came. The food was pretty good, I got the pulled pork and ribs my wife got the veggie burger. Everything was a little dry for my liking and oh yeah, Lord of the f*cking flies! Holy cr@p, like a million flies in there, made it impossible to enjoy our meal. The waitress explained to us that it was because we were in a valley of Apple orchards there was not much they could do. She was nice enough to try to reposition the fan to blow them away but, a million flies...anyway took awoke to get out of there, as someone else said, they're a bit inattentive. Just a vacation trip but, if ever out west again I'll just stick to the orchards for food, fewer flies.

Straight FIVE STAR. We went on a Sunday Night for an unplanned evening and was suggested by the locals to stop by. The weather was cold, rainy and windy but upon entering the restaurant we were greeted with a lovely smiling waitress. Not sure if she was the owner either, but she was amazingly friendly and helpful. Settled on ordering the Baked Mac & Cheese Dinner entree with two provided sides of garlic mashed potatoes and Spicy Green Beans. Our waitress even gave us a free side of the Cornbread salad because I couldn't decide which side I wanted! Good thing she did though, because ALL OF THEM tasted amazing!!! My boyfriend ordered the Prime Rib Sandwich, and we thought it would be more of a pulled pork sandwich, but seriously it was a FREAKIN' SLAB OF DELICIOUS MELTING MEAT on top of a burger bun. WHAT?! WHO DOES THAT?! A PLACE THAT'S FREAKING AMAZING DOES THAT!!! Yah. The food was delicious yet amazingly homely. The service top notch. Hidden spot in an unknown area for me, but definitely set the standard in visiting here.

Opened in April 2011, the Apple Valley BBQ restaurant in Parkdale is owned by the same folks as the long lived Apple Valley Country Store in Hood River (on Tucker Road). Although the meat is smoked at the Hood River location (this I say from first hand experience having visited the Country Store on a day when that was happening :-) ), the BBQ is only served here at the Parkdale restaurant. We stopped in for a first visit during late afternoon last week for a slice of delicious warm Bumbleberry pie as baked at the Apple Valley Country Store and served here. We loved the sparkling and spacious interior (no "sardine can" seating here - woohoo), the outdoor tables on the front patio that took advantage of both shade and sun, the warm welcome we received and the very friendly service. We don't eat meat very often but the aroma of smokey barbecue was intoxicating. So we took home a half rack of meaty, lean ribs which, along with the two sides of pear coleslaw, turned out to be plenty for two of lighter portion meat eaters to share. The tender meat was literally falling off the bone, although perhaps a little smokey for our preference. At only about $15 total, including the sides, we also thought this was a fair price. We'll definitely stop at Apple Valley BBQ again. But this time we'll probably be more inclined to stay in our lane, which veers to vegetarian eating. Although this is a BBQ place, vegetarian eating seems easy to do here. Because in addition to the yummy pear coleslaw, there was a great sounding house-made veggie burger on the menu along with mac n cheese, spicy green beans, macaroni salad, cornbread and some green salads. For omnivores, meat options abound from meatloaf to burgers to ribs to pulled pork to chicken. So something on the menu for everyone to enjoy. The menu also showed beer options and a few wines by bottle and glass from local vintners. (This MAY be the only restaurant in Parkdale to offer adult libations?) Among the wines were several from Hood River's Marchesi and Wy'East vineyards. From having had them before, we can recommend them all; in particular the Italian varietals from Marchesi. Open Wednesday - Sunday from 11am to 8pm, this restaurant serves lunch and dinner (dinner starts at 5pm). As you might imagine the place can be hoppin' for lunch on days the Hood River excursion train is running and drops off riders in Parkdale for an hour layover at just about 11:30. You might plan your visit with that in mind. PS - Save room for the pie! Note - If the train passengers have Apple Valley BBQ backed up, most possible during the Fall season, another fun and good place only about 6 miles north, towards Hood River, is Sawtooth Roadhouse. yelp.com/biz/sawtooth-ro… .

Nice surprise in Parkdale. I saw set on Solera brewery next door for lunch but we saw this BBQ restaurant across the street and a couple buildings to the west. We first had a beer at Solera and then went for BBQ. I feel that we made a great decision over just plain old pub food. I noticed that both places must work together as monday thru friday they have a deal that if you eat at Apply Valley BBQ and take your receipt to Solera, you get a $1 off a beer. Too bad they cannot just be side by side and combine good beer with great food. I will be coming back after my next ski adventure on Mt. Hood.

We took my dad on the Mt. Hood Railroad trip back in August and saw this BBQ place when we were walking around town. We instantly made a note to come back over here to try them. Glad we did, we piled into the car and over the mountain we went. They have an easy to get to location, if you are headed to Lost Lake, this place is right on the way. The waitress greeted us right away, there were only two other people in there. I was a little disappointed to see a very limited menu at first. You were either going to get pork or chicken if you wanted BBQ. I am not a fan of the pulled pork but decided not to be too picky about it, this after all was for Yelp research, right? We started out with an order of wings, they were the run of the mill standard wing, fried, hot sauce poured on. The waitress kept coming to check on us and kept the refills coming. The food came up quickly and we all took bites off the side dishes, since the lunch plate was pretty standard with pork ribs and pulled pork. I had the corn salad and I could have just had a giant bowl of that. It was basically cornbread, very moist, mixed with red peppers and onion. It had such an addicting quality to it, I am glad they are not up the street from me. I was thinking smashed up hush puppies almost. I have never finished eating pulled pork, but this time I was temped to lick the plate it came on. WOW who knew pulled pork could be that good and not choking dry. The ribs were not overly pork-ish as some can get, they had a good smokey flavor and I didn't use any BBQ sauce they were so good. The waitress was very cool about dessert because when I asked about the bread pudding, I wanted it cold and she said it was normally hot, but she would be happy to pull some from the fridge and not heat it up for me. Everybody was happy with the pie choices, which were apple and bumbleberry. I would say if you are on the way to Hood River, or heading to Parkdale for any reason, this place is a safe BBQ bet.

Best kept secret in Oregon. We found this place by taking a detour home from Timberline. The food was delicious, even our picky kids finished their plates. And not only is this a dog friendly establishment, they have a local dog that hangs out on the patio. He doesn't beg and is very calm. Our waitress told us he is known around the area as the town mayor! I love that you can get great food in a relaxed and friendly environment.

The man-folk and I headed up to the Mt. Hood area for day trippin'. We knew we'd come back to Apple Valley BBQ after dining her on a Mt. Hood Railroad trip. I had the BBQ meatloaf, baked beans and cornbread. It was pretty good. The man-folk had the ribs and pulled pork and the spicy green beans. He loved it. The service was EXCELLENT. Love our waitress. It was a beautiful day and the perfect place to stop. We'll be back again, I'm sure.

This was an awesome surprise for my family during a recent vacation. We were staying in Hood River and decided to spend one afternoon around the "fruit loop" area. After checking reviews on Yelp, we made our way to Parkdale to have lunch. To be honest, despite the positive reviews, we weren't expecting this level of BBQ. I've had BBQ in lots of cities in lots of states, but this, hands down, is the best I've eaten anywhere! They do legit BBQ the old-school way. The meat is juicy and tender with just the right amount of smoke. Good sauce too, but sauce is cheap and easy so I tend to judge BBQ dry without sauce. We shared several sides which were all perfect. The pear cole slaw was really great.

Absolutely thrilled with our first visit to Apple Valley BBQ after a late morning picking apples in The Loop. Charming joint with incredibly accommodating staff and highly competent BBQ. If you're in or around Parkdale, you owe it yourself to give this place a try.

A solid 3.5 stars for Apple Valley Westside BBQ, but I'm rounding up since Yelp doesn't officially let me give "half stars." Food: 4 stars Cost: 4 stars Atmosphere: 2.5 stars Service: 4 stars I took the Mount Hood Railroad to Parkdale and knew Apple Valley Westside BBQ was in town. I'm not sure why my fellow travelers opted for train food rather than local flavor but their loss. As soon as I hot off the train I could smell the pit going and I followed my nose to Apple Valley. I took a peak around the corner at the smoker (just to make sure it SW the real thing) and then headed inside. Much to my delight this place was empty. I was immediately greeted with a friendly hotel. The server was able to answer all of my questions about the menu and was fast to delivery my soda and lunch to the table (as she should have been with only about six other patrons in there). The BBQ was good but the real star of my basket was the coleslaw! I was expecting ordinary coleslaw but Apple Valley's had pears in it and it was delicious! I know pears in coleslaw sounds kind of odd, but it works, and well. If you are taking the train to Parkdale, skip the train lunch and head over to Apple Valley for their delicious coleslaw and BBQ.

The only pure BBQ joint that I know of in the Hood River Valley, I was excited to check it out for lunch before I did a hike in the area. I chose the bbq plate so I could try both the ribs and the pulled pork. Im usually a pulled pork person, and it was good, but not amazing in my book. I actually enjoyed the ribs more. They were not fall off the bone, but still very tendor and had a good flavor. With the plate you could choose two sides from a list that included pear coleslaw, cornbread salad, cornbread, fries, seasoned green beans, baked beans, & macaroni salad. You pretty much must save room for pie or cobbler. They are the delicious pies from the Apple Valley store and are fresh and amazing. The crust is delicate and fantastic. I would still like to check it out for dinner or on a Fri/Sat night for the smoked prime rib.

This is really a 2 star restaurant but I am giving it 3 because the service was great and our server was fun to talk to. We had the pulled pork sandwich and it was tooooooo dry. Frys were really good. Spinach salad had too much dressing and the bacon bits tasted lie they had been around for a while.

We enjoyed a super dinner there last night and I have to say that the waitress was seriously one of the best waitresses I have ever encountered. She was so amazing, I can't wait to return. Wings were to die for and everything else was top notch. Great place.

Having heard a couple of other friends praise this place, I decided to check it out last Saturday evening. The BBQ meatloaf was intriguing, so I ordered that on a sandwich. It came with a shallot glaze, and some spicy BBQ sauce. The meatloaf was smoky and moist, and the sauces worked well together. As a side I had some of their pear cole slaw. I got it more out of curiosity than anything else -- pears and cole slaw? It works. The mild sweetness of the pears goes great with the flavors of the slaw. Definitely recommended.

Limited menu for train passengers. Not a bad stop at the midway point of the train ride. A selection of a few craft beers on tap too.

First we stopped by Apple Valley's Country Store - very cute and lots of yummy enticing samples of jellies, jams, syrups, spicy mustards, etc. They have a tire swing and comfy benches around the nice yard to relax and eat your ice cream. There we learned of their BBQ location in Parkdale, and since it was time for lunch, we headed down the road to visit this truly one-horse town. Very quaint, picturesque and peaceful place. The BBQ joint was comfy with indoor and outdoor seating. Service was warm and friendly. Food was decent - I had a burger that was rather bland, but the pie was great. Maybe next time I'll try the pulled pork.

I've been going to Apple Valley Country Store for years so I was excited when they opened a place that serves their famous BBQ. The food is delicious and the menu is very creative - we had the cornbread salad, which is hard to imagine how good this can be; and the pulled pork sandwich, which is always my favorite; but the topper was the mud pie - an indulgent ice cream pie that we split 5 ways in order to ease our guilt. Nice casual atmosphere, excellent personal service - you can see its a labor of love.

After a punishing 10 mile uphill hike, we drove 30 miles so my man could taste what I heard was the best barbeque in Oregon. He had the pulled pork/pork ribs combo with spicy green beans and fries. The pork fell right off the bone and the pulled pork was amazing. One thing...the spicy sauce was spiced with pepper and that was about it. I think they need a better signature sauce. I had the mac n cheese, bubbling from the oven and tasty. Berry pie to go which was just okay. Unassuming restaurant, great service, friendly folks. We would definitely drive out of our way again. What an adorable little town!

I was looking forward to some tasty BBQ but was craving beef brisket instead of pulled pork. So, in lieu of beef brisket (which wasn't on the menu), I ordered the prime rib sandwich. I will admit that as far as BBQ goes, that wasn't the most logical selection on my part. That said, it was a tough, boring piece of meat on a cheap white flour bun, and it was also the most expensive item on the menu. Additionally, my side of green beans was drenched in an overly sweet and unidentifiable sauce that was also a disappointment.

I believe this is one of two cafes in the town of Parkdale, OR, one of the stops if you are riding on the Mt. Hood Railroad. The pulled pork sandwich was oh, so good. Food prepared quickly so we had time to enjoy the meal before getting back onthe train. Service was really good. No complaints here.

Twenty minute drive from Hood River and WELL WORTH IT! Six of us went and every single person was absolutely thrilled with their food. Prime Rib sandwich was out of this world. You must try the raspberry/huckleberry pie. To die for. The waitstaff was fantastic... will absolutely go back!

Parkdale is an idyllic little hamlet nestled on Mount Hood's verdant north slope. Apparently I'm not the only one to have noticed this because the 5 or so businesses that engage in service have really spruced up over the past couple of years. I think I've driven by Apple Valley in the past and felt that there was something culturally wrong about a bar-b-que joint in rural Oregon. However, this time an emergency forced me to overcome my prejudice, and I consider it a serendipitous fluke. The prices are reasonable, bordering on cheap, the ambience is country kitsch, minus the clutter and dust, and the service is sweet, but professional. The food, it hits some and misses others. We had the smoked prime rib with salad, baked beans, and garlic mashed potatoes and the roasted chicken with habañero peach sauce, pear coleslaw, and spicy green beans. The sides were great. The baked beans may have started life in a can, but if they did they bore little resemblance to their tinny, cloying selves by the time they made it to the plate. The meats weren't exemplary, but they weren't offensive either. The prime rib was less than absolutely tender and lacked the advertised smokiness. The accompanying demi glace (starch thickened? house made? I have no idea. What is demi glace doing in Parkdale anyway? maybe it's gravy) and horseradish sauce helped a lot. The chicken also suffered from general neglect. Underseasoned, only lightly sauced (problematic in that it was advertised as jerked), and slightly tough. It was, however, a real half chicken and not the BSB (boneless, skinless breast) that I was half expecting. I recommend Parkdale, and while you're there I recommend Apple Valley BBQ.
