The beer was good, very drinkable but with room for improvement. The food was much better than I expected and friendly fast service even though they were very busy.
Best beer I think I've ever had - have been visiting and staying in John Day my entire life, awesome to FINALLY have a consistent place to eat and drink. Have been telling all my friends about this place and the beer, would recommend this brewery to ANYONE.
Majorly surprised to find such a cool eatery/microbrewery in John Day. Locally handmade chairs and tables were cool and funky. The decour of the place was really welcoming, and our waitress was friendly and on the ball. We had their "Around the world" which is a sample of everything that was on their taps. Some homemade brews, some imported from the Northwest. Their beers aren't up to the Deshutes Brewery level, yet. Give them another year and I forsee a lot of awards hanging on their walls. My wife had the ruben, and I had the beef sliders. Both were absolutely excellent. I also had their soup of the day which was a salmon chowder, one of the best I've ever had. Obviously a place that the owners take great pride in, if I find myself in John Day again I'll definitely drop in.

Squeeze-In Restaurant & Deck

Reviews:
One of the five-star delights of my current hometown of Sacramento is a burger joint called the Squeeze Inn, so named because it's phenomenally popular with its loyal regulars and throngs of Food Network-inspired newbies, yet the indoor seating is limited to eleven barstools at the counter. But now that I've eaten breakfast at the Squeeze-In Restaurant & Deck in John Day, I understand a different reason for such a name. The dining area is plenty big enough here to accomodate several families, but what makes the name so appropos is that this place serves up such a huge quantity on every platter, you hafta squeeze it into your stomach to make it fit. We visited the Squeeze-In on a long roadtrip, and I knew that I'd be eating several eggy breakfasts, so on this particular day, I chose to order a bowl of oatmeal with maple and brown sugar, plus a short stack of pancakes and orange juice. I had high hopes for a big hike later in the morning, so my idea was to NOT GET FULL! But, little did I know that the pancakes here are positively gigantic. And perfect in every way, too! On weekends, there is a breakfast buffet. Usually, the thought of a breakfast buffet brings back nauseating memories of my parents dragging me to a Hometown Buffet. Besides, I didn't wanna get full. But, y'know...When I come back to John Day again next summer, I do suppose that I'll hit up that buffet. The quality of the buffet goods appeared to be right on par with the regular menu items. It might also be nice to eat on the deck in the summertime, too, as it overlooks Canyon Creek.
Great burgers and sandwiches. A good place to stop and take a lunch break on your motorcycle trip across Oregon.
Stopped in for Fathers Day and we just wanted to say that we loved the people here. Everyone here was SO nice and the food was good. We have to come to John day a couple times a year and we really enjoyed the environment (next time we will sit out on the patio for sure). Thanks for a good Fathers Day breakfast!

Best bet in John Day for real food, rather than local generic steak-and- potatoes or fast food joints. Chicken fajitas and chili relleno dinners were good, comparable to much, much larger cities throughout the West. Owner/chief cook/bottle washer and waitress were friendly and attentive, and tasty Tex-Mex-ish food was quick to appear. Exterior was amusingly off-beat, shabby former 50s drive-in; interior was neat, clean and decorated in non-franchise Sonoran motif.

Snaffle Bit Dinner House

Reviews:
The Snaffle Bit is one of your better choices in this small town. We had a fairly decent meal, but it wasn't outstanding in any way. They brought chips and salsa that were oily and bland and we left them largely uneaten, but the rest of the dinner was ok. Because your choices are so limited, you should call for a reservation. They were very kind to fit us in without one. Someone had a birthday and the birthday victim had to ride a stick pony through the restaurant, which they did with gusto and lots of whoops and hollers. The waitress loudly asked everyone else if it was their birthday, to which we all loudly proclaimed, "NO!!!" The food may not be extraordinary, but it was a fun and friendly environment for all.
My boyfriend and I were traveling about Eastern Oregon when the owner at a tiny family-owned store told us about this place. We always ask locals where THEY go and recommend and try to avoid the tourist traps. So, this place was literally a hour outside of our way, but the gentleman guaranteed it would be worth it. Man, was he ever right!!! This is a very tiny place, so calling ahead for table is greatly recommended. But their food is to die for! We shared one plate of food, ordering the smallest steak. When it arrived, the plate was huge, the steak was definitely at least twice the size stated on the menu and it was buttery, melt in your mouth delectable. Honestly, I have NEVER had a better steak ANYWHERE!! The service staff was great, friendly, and talkative, taking the time to point us to a couple good places to stay the night. It was like dining at a friend's house. We honestly could not find a single problem and the extra couple hours drive out of our way was well worth it! In fact, this place will be on our trip agenda every time we come within a 100 miles of it. Oh, and the prices? Also unbelievably awesome! The whole steak dinner, with extra salad, massive loaded baked potato, veggies and several alcoholic drinks was a great steal at under $25!! Easily this was a dinner that any other place would have cost us over $50 for the amount of food and impeccably quality we received!
This place is amazing. Fantastic. Awesome. We were seated by Logan who greeted us with a smile and kept the evening feeling like dinner with family. The staff as a whole are great. Our dinner was perfect. My wife had a "small" salad that if I recall was chicken, berry and walnut - excellent she said. I had a thick cut sirloin that came out pretty rare but the chef happily adjusted to medium. Flavor was outstanding. I rarely order steak (watching the beef intake) and this was heaven. The Snaffle Bit is a must stop. Call ahead and reserve a table, we were lucky we arrived early. Say hi to Logan.

Great breakfast. It is a small town gem. Someone mentioned that it was overpriced but our breakfast for two was only $18.00. If ever though town again, I will certainly stop.
While in John Day for a few days, we ate dinner here twice. The pizza on the first night was excellent and the prices were fantastic. Our server was very attentive. The second dinner we had one of the senior portions specials. Even with the smaller portions there was plenty to eat. Our steak was done to perfection, and it came with a choice of sides and perfectly cooked vegetables. We will definitely go back and highly recommend. We had the same server again and he was very friendly and attentive.
After reading Rachels review (rant) I was at first hesitant to eat here, but the other reviews were not as negative so I gave it a try. The dinner was pretty good. I had the chicken fried steak which was very nicely done. The batter was not too thick and you could tell that it wasn't one of those pre done steaks. My wife had the sirloin which she declared perfect! The dinners came with a nice salad and obviously homemade blue cheese dressing. Since we are vegetable lovers we enjoyed the very large serving of broccoli. The only criticism was that it was more overcooked than we like, but we still enjoyed it. A good solid choice in a very food limited city.

Do not bother to eat here. The DQ burger would be better. Steak was tasteless. veggie was frozen corn microwaved beyond taste and texture. Wine was red vinegar. We ate the salad and left. Felt sorry for the waitress...even she was embarrassed.
Umm.. it was akin to The Sizzler. If in the area I'd probably go back but I would specify that I don't want sauce on my steak. I'm not entirely sure what the sauce was but there was a lot of it and it wasn't something I enjoyed. The service was great, there must be a dish that's really good. I'm just not sure what it would be.
Had lunch here with my wife and two girls and it was awesome!! I had the golden nugget burger and even after I was so full I couldn't stop eating the food was that good. My wife had the salmon fettuccine and it was perfect and my two girls had the chicken strips with mashed potatoes which even tho they are both picky eaters the ate everything on their plates.
