    Kaze has been my go-to place for sushi in the Hood River area. The restaurant is nice and clean, the food is more traditional, of good quality, and portions are good. Great place to grab a bite and hang out with some friends.

    NOW OPEN! Drove by Kaze because I missed the sushi, hoping and wishing they were open. I can't believe my eyes, they are open and now I can now have my spicy lobster roll and be at peace. Thank you Kaze!

    Since Toshi doesn't update review sites... Kaze is closed, hopefully temporarily. You can eat his amazing sushi and other dishes at his Beaverton Restaurant, Hakatamon. 3486 SW Cedar Hills Blvd. and Hall . It's in a tiny strip mall behind the Chevron station. If you're a ramen fan, you HAVE to try it!!! I'm dedicated to sashimi at Kaze but did try the ramen at Hakatamon and it was AWESOME!

    Came here to celebrate my husband's birthday. What a treat. The vibe of the place made me feel like we were in Hawaii for some reason, maybe the music? We tried to order a bottle of sake made by a Japanese woman, but they were out, so had to get a different one, which we enjoyed. The rolls are very creative and it was hard to choose. We ordered the panko crusted tuna roll, which was delicious. We also ordered one of the specials, tempura lobster roll and one of their special rolls on the menu that included asparagus. Yum & yum. We really liked the presentation & textures of the rolls. We were then given salad & miso soup. At the end we ordered 4 different nigiri, even trying the octopus, which I always thought of as rubbery and I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't rubbery and tasted good. I look forward to coming here next time we're in the area.

    I am shocked by the authenticity and quality of the Japanese food Kaze cooks. Never in a million years did I think I'd find this level of cuisine in such a small town (albeit, Hood River is "special"). Highlights: - Large, diverse but not overwhelming menu - Plenty of vegetarian dishes to choose from if you do not eat meat (fish is meat, for you highly confused "I'm vegetarian but I eat fish" people out there) - A nicely curated sake list with a little bit of everything for the curious or the connoisseur You must go. SERIOUSLY.

    Thursday night meal with the family was a treat. They have high chairs and kid sized meals for toddlers. The food was good with attentive and sociable staff. There were only a few tables taken while we were there so we had no trouble getting seated and served.

    Wow! I've eaten alot of sushi and this was by far the best I've ever had. 10 stars on service. Freshest fish you can imagine. Selected by the chef almost daily. Beyond worth the slight wait. Amazing sake- even offered us a tasting.... Relaxed tropical vibe. Amazing...

    It's my 1st time to Kaze , I'm utterly disappointed quality & taste of the food . I love avocado so i ordered the Kaze special sushi roll(suppose to have tempura prawns,eel and avocado in it)but guess what,the chef totally forget about the avocado,the special roll was served to me without avocado.The roll is not bad , but it will be better with avocado. I also ordered the special spicy miso ramen with tofu. The miso soup is so oily . And the miso ramen turn up to be a disappointment as well. Service provided was so so,I highlighted to the staff that they missed out the avocado in the sushi , and the chef gave a complimentary ice cream together with my ramen , so btw I finished the ramen,the ice cream will be melted .

    We went to Kaze this past Sunday night for our "date night" while family watched our son. The place was busy so we just sat right up at the bar and watched the sushi chef work his magic. The service was a tad slow - however there was 1 server for the entire restaurant and she was busting her ass to do a good job, so I can understand and respect that. Being we sat right at the bar the sushi chef handed our rolls to us directly. The sushi itself, they had some amazing rolls on special. We had a salad roll with tempura soft shell crab, an amazing lobster/crab roll and a couple of rolls off of the menu. We were pretty stuffed, but my husband pulls his amazing request for the chef to do a "chef special" roll. The chef asked if we like scallops, smoked eel and we said yes to both and said a little heat would be good. He said OK and focused on our roll. He worked on this thing for like 10 minutes and it was in a foil packet. He then put it on a plate and poured some alcohol on the plate, lit it on fire and placed it in front of us, saying "You wanted hot!" :) It was AMAZING. Probably the best sushi roll ever. We don't get up to Hood much but next time we do, we'll be back!

    I've heard this is where the local Japanese folks actually go for sushi. I've been 3 times and the service was good, so I guess they improved their speed (but I wasn't in town before, so I don't really know what it used to be like). Better miso than Okalani, so if you want to dine "Japanese" style, go here.

    I've been here at least a dozen times and the food is always fresh, beautiful, and tasty. The service is friendly and fast. Definitely my favorite restaurant in Hood River. It's hard to get out of there without dropping a $50+ for two so I don't get there as often as I'd like. It's more of a payday treat or a special occasion meal for me.

    Picture this: Oct 1, 2014, Kaze Restaurant, Hood River, OR. Four of us arrived in anticipation of dinner at 7:50pm. A party of five was just being seated. We noticed there were two tables open, one for two and one for four. We also noticed the waitresses (two) looked a little harried like they had a busy night so waited patiently for ten minutes, not being noticed or acknowledged by anyone from the staff. After ten minutes I took upon myself to ask if we could seat ourselves at the open table for four. The snippy waitress barked "you'll just have to wait 'till we can get to you!". Pardon me? We just want to sit rather than stand by the door. The other waitress walked by us three times with absolutely no acknowledgement, no hello, be with you soon, nothing. We waited another ten minutes and walked out, probably to the relief of the staff so they wouldn't have to work till closing, 9pm. We have patronized this establishment several times in the past when they had different but efficient and friendly servers. We won't be back, not because of the food but our experience with the staff!

    Ugh - I really don't want to take a star away, but I have to. Minus a star because of service. I frequent here a lot. Lots of girls nights, and we all agree, food = fantastic....service = slow. Friendly, but slow. Not sure what it is, but it has slowly gone down hill. I assume the turnover rate for a waitress in HR is high. It won't keep me from going back though. I still think their sushi is far better than the place a few blocks down. So if you have a little patience, the food is worth it! Just don't go when you're wicked hungry or in a wicked hurry! :)

    Kaze serves up pretty good sushi. Not great, not fantastic, but pretty darn good. The food itself is deserving of four stars, and is the best (of two total) Japanese restaurant in Hood River. The fish is fresh, and the rolls are fairly standard as to what you find in American sushi bars - rainbow roll, philly roll, spicy tuna roll, spider roll... nothing super inventive but having the baseline American-style rolls is very satisfying. There is also a fairly inclusive Japanese menu including udon, don buri, teriyaki, and tempura. I've mostly stuck to the sushi, though my non-sushi eating dining companions have all enjoyed the food. The problem that kicked this down to three stars is the slllllooooowwwwww service. I mean, really, really slow. While the servers are friendly and cheerful, they are also completely unapologetic for how long it takes to get your food if there are more than 3 tables filled in the restaurant. The best experience I've had here was with a large group of 8 people - we showed up at 5:30 and were the first group, ordered quickly and the food arrived in a just-barely reasonable amount of time. The worst was with my daughter for her 13th birthday... even though we sat at the bar, the food took at least a half hour to arrive and we were all getting really cranky at that point. It didn't help that it was the middle of July and it was blazing hot inside. We had to keep flagging the server for more water, and I was almost at the point of leaving when our food finally showed up. That particular incident kept me from returning until a group of friends decided to go recently, and I figured what the hell. So - go early, and you're fine. After 6, be prepared to wait and wait and wait... good thing sushi is served cold.

    Arriving well after the dinner rush on a quiet Thursday around 8:30, my girlfriend and I sat for half an hour waiting to be seated, before we finally broke down and went to the OTHER sushi restaurant in town. In that half hour, we had a front-row seat to several open tables, and bleakly, to a family with young children melting down as they waited and waited for their check, which never arrived while we were there. Service appears to be legendarily bad here, especially in the summer. My only other Kaze experiences have been in the winter, where I found the food and sushi to be well above par for the area, but the service ambivalent. Too bad; it's a long way to PDX.

    For Sushi...Kaze is the place to go in Hood River. I sat at the bar and really enjoyed my experience. The service was attentive, food was served in a timely manner, and nice quality, the fish had a lot of flavor, great choices, and the rolls combined flavors...well thought out.

    We enjoyed a sushi dinner here on Yelpers' advice. The nigiri sushi and rolls were outstanding. The fish was very fresh and generously cut. We liked the Gorge roll, the spicy salmon roll and the shrimp tempura roll. We also had a well prepared chicken teriyaki don, which was large and delicious. It was prepared right, not just cooked and a sweet sauce thrown on. The pork gyoza was a good starter. The restaurant has a bit of a Hawaiian feel and a pleasant river view. Service was good and friendly.

    Excellent and attentive staff. We eat here on thursday nights so there is very little difficulty obtaining a table. Teriyaki chicken on a bed of cabbage and a side of edamame. California rolls wish cold smoked salmon. Miso soup. Tiny scallops on a bed of rice covered with peanut sauce. Green tea and an rc cola. Excellent food at a very very reasonable price.

    The food is fantastic. The view is amazing. The service is awful. I have been twice in the last few months. The first time I went I thought they might just be having a bad night, but after the second time, I'm not so sure. We had to wait forever for service and our food. Our casual dinner took almost three hours. At one point the waitress brought our check and we immediately put our card in. She said she would be back in a minute. She didn't come back for 15 MINUTES. The place was not that busy. Good food. Bad service. I hope they get their act together soon.

    Good sushi. Horrible wait! Not just waiting to be seated but, we had to wait FOREVER to get food. Waitress never came to ask if we needed appetizers or more drinks while waiting an eternity for our food. Lame!

    Pretty good food, okay service, and ordinary location. The part I disliked was the gut wrenching experience of paying the bill in a massive party of six people! This is 2012, people don't carry cash anymore! As a business, adjust to this idea or fail. Having a party of six that wants to break up the tab into a few smaller tabs shouldn't be a big deal. As a server, isn't part of your job? And in Oregon, aren't servers some of the highest paid servers in the nation?! Lastly, I always tip more when a server treats spliting a bill as no big deal.

    OMG I'm the first one to write a review on Kaze??? Where do I begin... I'm so excited I have writer's block. Okay, so if you want world class sushi in Hood River, search no further. The sushi is out of this world. Kaze is in my top 4 Sushi places, even after living in Hawaii and travelling in Japan extensively!! The owner is from Hawaii, so there is a lot of Hawaiian influence on the menu which I love, love, love. The menu is very thorough and I've tried several different things. Love curry?? Try the Curry Udon. Absolutely amazing. Prices are extremely low. Shockingly low. I was in disbelief when I saw the bill, I was thinking they left something off the bill?? Nope, it's really that cheap. This place is packed with tons of people dying for their wonderful food. Be prepared to wait, but it will be worth your while... If I didn't live in another state, i'd be here weekly...

    We went there for our daughter's 5th birthday. Perfect sushi and service. They made a special birthday dessert for our daughter (maybe because they weren't super busy) that was through the roof!

    Went to Hood River for weekend getaway with a group of friends to board Mt. Hood. Decided to go to Kaze for dinner because of the great reviews and location (down a couple blocks from our rented condo). The restaurant is very cozy, about 30 seats max. We had a group of 10, but the wait was fairly short. We had to be seated at different tables and the waitress tried to charge us the auto gratuity for a party of 6/8(?)+ I don't think so! They were short-staffed, only 2 waitresses with no smiling faces. I didn't get my veggie tempura appetizer until the group was almost done eating. It took about 45+ mins after I ordered and it was the first order! The waitress was kind enough to take it off my bill, but then the card machine failed on the last person. I have to give them credit though, they did pretty good understaffed. Food-wise, the special calamari tempura roll was delicious! Everyone else seemed to have enjoyed their meal. Also, plenty of gawkers, and I don't want to say it's because the majority of us were Asian, but I don't know what other reason it would be. We weren't loud or troublesome whatsoever.

    I'm a Hood River local and have eaten at Kaze several times. Each time I go there it is because my friends continue to assure me that the quality of both service and food continues to improve. Unfortunately, my experience has not confirmed this. The staff is poorly trained and generally aloof. The quality of the food is poor. I've tried both sushi and cooked items (soba/etc). Every time I walk out the door, I am totally underwhelmed and assure myself that I won't be back...maybe this time I'll take my own advice. If you are looking for sushi, there is a much, much better option several blocks away. If you aren't looking for sushi, try one of the other superb options in Hood River or cross the bridge and check out what White Salmon has to offer. tl;dr: poor food quality and crappy service.

    We loved this place when it opened. But in the last year the service has been horrible. At first the sushi could make up for it. But being local and trying to frequent local establishments during there slow winter months became impossible. We try again every once in a while but tonight it was the same. Only a couple of tables seated, most empty tables dirty and waiting 15 mins before even asking if you need a drink. Try sushi okalani down the road.

    I wasn't expecting much, well maybe good...Hood River has a lot of quality little joints. But there is so much mediocre Japanese food around Portland. Lucky I was with two friends so I could sample sushi, tempura, the Bento Box with sashimi and beef. A little too much soy sauce on the beef, but otherwise far better on everything than the last five Japanese restaurants I've been at. This is a casual dining place, and looks like nothing special as far as setting. But we'd drive from Portland (okay, there's also the gorge and the fun downtown of Hood River to walk around)....an hour each way, to come back here. Good service too.

    I knew I was in for an authentic Japanese experience when the young lady behind the counter belted out the traditional Japanese greeting, "Irasshaimase!" as I approached the front entrance of Kaze Sushi. Having traveled extensively in Japan over the past 15 years I was curious if Kaze could measure up to the real thing. It was a packed house and reservations on a Friday night proved beneficial. Thank you, Shelley! The hostess was motivated & attentive as was our delightful, energetic and bubbly server. Her attitude certainly made up for the 15 minute wait before our drink order was taken. Great things are worth waiting for couldn't be more true here at Kaze. The young server helped me select a chilled carafe of Sake, just to my liking. And shortly afterwards, the salad and traditional miso soup arrived. I found myslef back in the quaint and delightful Japanese alley ways reminiscent of my last trip to Mt Fujiyama, bustling with excitement and their renowned friendly & overly helpful culture. I ordered the large Sashimi plate and couldn't have been more delighted. 16 pieces for less than $20; as fresh and tender as it gets....literally melts in your mouth and the variety & presentation was first class. My wife was sweet to mention it was my birthday and our server brought us a very large complimentary serving of green tea ice cream. How thoughtful. Wonderful! As if that wasn't enough, the server ran back to the kitchen and wouldn't let us leave until she presented us with 2 pair of traditional souvenier chopsticks in celebration of their one-year anniversay. Am I dreaming? I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried. So here's the scoop: if you don't have a spare $2-Large or can't afford the time for a Nippon Air trip to the Orient , but you're wondering what it's like to dine in Japan, treat yourself to an adventure in Hood River at Kaze. Just be patient.....great things are worth waiting for.

    So tonight Kaze ran out of Pino Gris and only had Chardonnay. Personally, I think Chardonnay is a horrible match for Japanese food and we wanted Pino Gris. Being one to think out of the box, I asked if I could make a quick run to the supermarket to buy a bottle of Pino Gris. The waitress asked the owner and the verdict came down that yes, we could, but there would be a $10 corking fee. Now I have no problem with corking fees. None whatsoever. But when a restaurant carries two kinds of white wines and runs out of one of them, you'd think they'd cut a customer some slack, especially when that customer offers to drive to the supermarket to buy a wine that the restaurant ordinarily carries. (And matches the food much better.) The chardonnay mouthfeel from the malolactic fermentation just doesn't work with Japanese food. That's why sake is usually so dry and crisp. At any rate, to impose a $10 corking fee on a customer to wants to go out and buy the wine that the restaurant ran out of, to me, it a bit heartless. Then, to make matters worst, the Ika Don was not very good. I have a feeling it wasn't grilled like it wasn't supposed to be, but rather was microwaved. I've had excellent grilled eel, and this wasn't it.

    My family of four ate here and were extremely pleased. We have found great sushi restaurants on our vacation to Oregon but this one beat the rest. They had really innovative dishes that were amazing, such as wasabi dumplings which had wasabi in the dough. Surprisingly hot but yummy. The wait staff were friendly and helpful in offering suggestions and food came quickly and perfect.
