This is the place to be in Eastern Oregon. Easily one of the best steaks I've ever eaten, and the sides are outstanding as well. It's a little out of the way, but it is well worth the journey.

Great salad bar! Make sure to try the cowboy bread, prime chili and baked beans. Also the brown gravy and mash potatoes is the way to go for your side. Great for groups. Good ol' western theme with friendly wait staff. Worth the 10 minute drive from Baker City, Oregon. Recommended by locals and we see why now. We enjoyed!

Wow, what a huge disappointment. If I could go no stars I would. The meal started out promising but it went south very quick. I ordered the T-Bone steak "a little over" medium but when the waitress brought it out I got one side well done, which was edible with loads of steak sauce, and the other was so over done I think they killed the cow three times over I didn't attempt to eat it. I explained to the waitress the it was so inedible and she apologized and said she would talk to the owner. She came back said I'm sorry and gave us the full amount on the bill. I flagged the owner down who was all excuses, said sorry and reluctantly gave us a discount. A little ticked off, I went to pay the bill and the husband owner was there and all he could say was "Sorry, it is a tough cut to cook" WTF?!?! This is a "steakhouse" and they can't cook meat? I was so dissatisfied and ticked off when I left, I won't be going back.

Very upset waitress was excellent but paid well too much lamb chops that were burnt and tasteless very upset as we were told this was a great place and that we paid way too much money and the baked potato was completely plain with nothing in the hand you a basket of butter would not recommend this place

I didn't expect much from a small town steak house, but was pleasantly surprised. Everything was cooked perfectly and had the right amount of spices. Really, no complaints about any of the food from our party of 5. Service was excellent too. Prices are slightly high but worth it to celebrate a special occasion. Haines is worth the short drive of off I-84. Very scenic country

We love this place. The steaks, salad bar, cowboy bread, chili and beans were great. Haines is a small town located in the middle of cattle country. If you love the outdoors and small town atmosphere you will enjoy Haines. If you need traffic, city lights and lots of people, you will not enjoy this area of Oregon. Here you need to slow down and relax. If you find two pickups stopped in the middle of the road, just slow down smile , waive with all fingers up and go around.

Disappointed:( The service and atmosphere where good but the food was tasteless and over cooked. I had the Rib Eye. Not worth the amount they charge. I could also hear the chef talking trash about us ordering our child the prime rib, which came out burnt to a crisp.

The two 1 star ratings I just read certainly don't go along with the wonderful steaks I've had there the dozen or so times I've been there. Its one of the few places I've had a steak that I could actually chew - and enjoy it. We may do a motorcycle ride up thru Anthony Lakes and down into Haines just to have dinner there. I'm sorry those two had bad food or service - I just haven't seen it.

We got off the Interstate and drove a short distance on Hwy 30 to eat dinner on our way from Boise to Portland. The food was great, and the staff were friendly. The place was full of locals. The salad bar was well stocked with fresh vegetables and fixings. They even include really good chili with cornbread, butter and honey! The price was reasonable, and they have a wide selection of menu items. we'll go back, even though its a little out of the way.

Second visit to Haines Steakhouse and delighted with the cowboy food experience. T~ bone steak, prime rib chili, cowboy bread, all you can eat salad bar, burgers, and a nice pour of whisky in their Manhattan's. Nice beer list and home made desserts. Friendly western experience both by customers and staff. We dream and will drive out of our way to eat here. It's everything you'd expect from big steak house with historical cowboy decor in a small town. We highly recommend Haines Steakhouse.

Before coming into town for the motorcycle rally I made reservations at Haines steak house for Saturday night. After reading reviews here I considered canceling and I'm glad I didn't. I have no idea what happened to cause bad reviews but here's my experience. We were promptly seated and given the menu+ tonight's specials and the specials for rally participants. I chose the Hells canyon 14oz ribeye with badass braised onions. My wife picked the flat iron. Both included the salad bar and prime rib chili. The salad bar was well stocked and look extremely fresh. They had a wide variety of salad dressing including Catalina. The prime rib chili was quite delicious and is worthy of seconds. Our steaks showed up in just enough time to finish our salads and they were cooked perfectly. The mashed potatoes and brown gravy was tasty. Our steaks were cooked perfect and were tender. The kind of tender that the knife melts right thru the steak tender. I had ordered the 14oz sirloin now I didn't have a scale with me but I can guarantee that steak was way over 14oz and more like 18-20oz. The decor was very country and servers wear country shirts and have large belt buckles. It was a very pleasant meal and I'm looking forward to my next visit here.

My husband and I went away for an anniversary weekend and ate here on a recommendation. The second we walked in, the hostess asked us if it was our anniversary. What a weird question, but she was right. My husband and I are picky about our prime rib, and this was the best we've had in a long time. Aged and cooked perfectly. I couldn't identify everything in the rub, but we loved it. The bread and the salad bar were good. The wines are very reasonably priced, and the service was great. We thought we couldn't eat any more, and then they brought out chocolate cake (homemade by the hostess!) for our anniversary. This is the kind of old-time steakhouse we miss from the midwest.

If I could go lower than 1 star I would. We were there a few months ago for the basketball tournament in Baker City. It was me the wife and my two kids. after taking our drink order our server came back only once. And that was to take our food order. It was a HORRIBLE experience. The only thing good about that meal was the bread. I ordered a $30 Rib Eye, and the wife ordered a $40-50 filet. They mixed up the cooking temperatures. Bringing me a almost well done rib eye, and her a filet that I am quite convinced thought it was still alive. I asked the server at the table behind ours for our server, and she never returned. I then bothered that other server to alert the management of our issues. Half a hour later this old lady wobbles over to our table, and I explain what's going on. By this time I didn't want more food there. I was ready to leave, she stated she would have to talk to the owner. Shortly after the old man sauntered over to my table, and had me tell him what was going on. I did, and he told me that it was MY responsibility to immediately notify my server that there was an error, and since I failed to do that, there was nothing he could do. I told him he wad out of his fu*king mind if he thought I would pay for this crap. He threatened to call the sheriff's department. I laughed in his face, threw down $30 to cover the cost of my kids food and walked out. Knocking over a soda on him by "accident" at the same time. I don't do stuff like that, but this old guy was lucky I didn't bi+ch slap him Don't ever go there. Over priced, minimal service, terrible food. It does gave good bread, and it does smell really good. But that sure isn't worth the Ben Franklin you will be dropping inside those walls

Classic Western Steakhouse; reminds me of the Stagecoach in Boise (actually Garden City) or Cattleman's outside of Reno, on the way to Carson City. Western cabin decor with lots of mounted animals up on the walls. Homey restaurant charm, the salad bar is in a covered wagon, you serve your self beans and chili from a warm cauldron. The beef was great, I had the ribeye which was very flavorful. Others had the prime rib and it looked great.

This is a small town operation that serves people from two nearby towns and travelers like us. We have been there before and no doubt will be again. Don't confuse this with the chain steakhouses to be found it cities around the country. It is simpler fare. However prices are better. I was hoping for a better wine list but suspect the diners won't support it. I found a decent red after having a decent martini. My New York strip loin was cooked correctly. It didn't have the flavor I am used to but that comes back to a smaller market. My wife and her friends thought the meal was great. Certainly had none of the problems described in other recent reviews.

I grew up in this area, my first job was at the original Steakhouse. That man, and the relatives that took over for him knew food. He, and even the 3rd owners had a large variety of burgers and steaks etc on the menu making the place SPECIAL..Everything was hand cut and homemade. The current owners..not so much. The food is very ordinary, bordering on bland; though the salad bar is still good. I used to drive a hundred miles one way a few times a year just to eat here; not any more. The last time our group of 6 met the prime rib was tough, the lobster was terrible and the baked potatoes were cold. When we asked for something to be done about this,(did not eat our food ) the "old lady" as the other folks have called her (she is the owner) brought us two berry desserts which she said were free (she did charge us for them, which my husband actually paid for!) It was NOT busy, which speaks for itself.... The locals tell me you never know if the food is going to be good or bad, which is very sad as it was great for 35 years! haven't been back in a year and a half.

Cowboy up-this is a steakhouse....reservations at 6pm. There were 6 of us, one baby who is never fussy and we sat near the front. The place was busy and our waitress also made the drinks; so it was slow. With dinners over $27 I don't want to be rushed, I don't know if it was due to the elderly cranky hostess ( owner?) or the fact we brought a baby but we were pressured to order appetizers and dinner at the same time- which we never do We ordered appetizers and wine, cocktail arrived 10 minutes after wine. Popcorn shrimp tasted old, stuffed mushrooms were raw, dry looking and stuffed with cream cheese big deal. Can't mess up fried cheese sticks- difinately Sysco. I ordered the rib with special glaze- there is nothing special about A-1 sauce which I scrapped off and gave to my son in law who loves the stuff( along with steak well done). The chuck wagon salad bar had the usual fixings and chili, cornbread and soup. I think cranky pants saw us take an extra cracker for the baby- The saladbar is a $9 charge and she kept eyeing our table- so i am sure she thought we'd ripped her off for $1.50 afterall the baby didn't order a meal and wasnt entitled to the saladbar. Then during our meal she brings the vacuum over and cleans the floor under our table-moves the baby and my daughters feet. Hey we tip well AND clean up- ya old bag. That was in extremely poor taste! Back to the food- ribs were dry and overdone. Mashed potatoes had cold spots! I heard at one time this WAS the place to eat. Not anymore. The cranky old lady can have it-vacuum your heart out, keep your crackers! It's all yours honey. Save your money people and cook your own prime meat from Costco!

This outfit may be the best Steakhouse in all of Union County - and could hold its own among other establishments in the Willamette Valley. Upon walking into the rather unasuming frontal exterior, you are brought into a large foyer and into the HUGE dining room, which is two-storied and richly decorated with Western decor. Ornate wood-work is all about. The menu is mostly steaks - and they are awesome! Try the salad bar, and the free toasted garlic bread! This is a great romantic outpost in the heart of sagebrush country!
