Best Sushi I have ever had in my life! Get the Hurricane, and Spicy Cali Roll! The waitress was fantastic. I can barely move because of how full and happy I am. I am so satisfied. I normally don't like driving 20 minutes for sushi (especially since there's a place 2 minutes from my house) but I am completely happy making that trip for Yami! Not only was the sushi absolutely delicious, it was also gorgeous. Very aesthetically pleasing! I've had mochi from so many sushi places and Yami takes the cake, man. It had brilliant flavor and also looked beautiful.

My fiancé and I moved to the Portland area after spending four years in Hawaii eating some of the best sushi in the world. We tried a few places in the area and were not very happy-- loose rice, tasteless fish, low standards for freshness. We tried this place last week and have decided that it's now our go to spot. I had a couple rolls (the spicy tuna and the double crunch) and my partner had the salmon bento box. Everything was amazing-- fresh, flavorful, and generously portioned. We were a bit full but wanted to try something else on the menu, so we got a bowl of the spicy siamin (ramen), and that too was awesome. I'm dying to try their chicken katsu and I think they have curry, so we're definitely going back more than once. Service was great. The restaurant was clean. Loved it!

We went here today and all I have to say is yuuuummmm!!!!! I ordered the salmon bento, my husband the chicken Katsu and my son the tempura prawns. My husband really liked the chicken, my son really liked the prawns (so did I) and I loved the salmon. Best salmon I had in a while. Service was really good as well. Even though it was busy our server checked with us plenty of times. I would definitely come back again

Loved the food hated the service. Rude staff and gave off the vibe that we were keeping them from something better they'd rather do than wait on us.

I've been here several times although I don't eat raw fish..... LOL this place is CLEAN alwayssssss; staff members are always pleasant, inviting and friendly. I usually get simple things such as avocado rolls, Philadelphia rolls and California rolls. From time to time I splurge and try the Crispy Salmon. DELICIOUS! My co workers and I love it and it's the only place I go to for sushi in this area. Prices are affordable and I've never been disappointed! Give it a try!

The calamari were pretty good. Very simple, but they know what they're doing. As far as the sushi goes, it's sub par. I didn't want to drive to saburo's and wait in line; I just wanted my sushi fix. This place didn't provide that for me. The spicy tuna wasn't spicy. It didn't have much tuna in it. It felt like I was just eating rice. We had another roll that just had a ton of cream cheese and spicy mayo; i couldn't even get a hint of the fish. What i did, was get a nigiri to get my fish craving down. The poke salad was pretty good too. Their fish is fresh. But their rolls need more fish and less rice. I don't think I'll give this place another chance. i'll have to go wait in line at saburo's to get my fish on. BTW if you just like rice and different types of sauces like dragon blood and spicy mayo bazooka, then this place might satisfy you.

Been in Gresham a year and just found this place... So good!! Service was awesome and food was even better.

This is our go-to local neighborhood sushi place, which we patronize either for take-out or dine in. Good quality food, reasonable prices. They do have decent specials from time to time, tonight, amongst our usual faire, we enjoyed a Mango Lovers roll, (mango, cream cheese, crab, etc) for $7.99. DEELICIOUS. Really good and creative dishes, along with your typical sushi place offerings. My only complaint is they really skimp on the ginger and wasabi...an complaint others who have been have echoed.

  • Alena N.

Great food! Amazing customer service! Super tender and it is some kind of unbelievable deliciousness. We ordered 3 rolls: Vegas, Volcano(was the best. It melted in the mouth) and hot dance. Everything was super tasty and delicious. I would recommend this place and I would take my friends there soon. Enjoyed atmosphere and clean environment!!! Go go go!

    (5)
  • Kate A.

I made a custom order over the phone and we able to pick up my order 15 min later, SO fresh and delicious! And not covered with all of that sauce, which I appreciate. Definitely going back!

  • Kristina B.

Don't come here if you're alone on lunch. You're not important enough. 35 minutes after I got seated I finally got my miso soup. A BOWL OF MISO SOUP DAMN IT. Few minutes later my sushi rolls came. Every time I come here they ask "just one?" What do you mean just one? Am I supposed to bring my whole office here to be considered worthy? Three stars for amazing sushi. Love the food, but always treated badly.

  • Alexandra J.

Yummy! One of the best sushi restaurants that I have been to. The hostesses are lovely and friendly. The restaurant is nice and clean. Our rolls came out timely and as always the seafood is fresh and appealing. I recommend every roll! The take-out is excellent too.

    (5)
  • Isaac B.

I've been coming here for a while now with my fiance. Decent teriyaki, close to home, fresh sushi, and ok prices. However my last experience with one of the hosts was extremely unprofessional. I'm not sure if it was a language barrier or misunderstanding but she needs to chill the fuck out. I will not be coming back.

I am soooo glad I found this little gem...and in gresham! Clean, beautiful decor and the food is absolutely amazing! If you haven't been here yet you are missing out!

    (5)
  • Brian O.

Very clean nice sushi restaurant. We ordered 3 rolls which were all good but the Volcano was a bit over the top. The Calamari was decent if you only want rings and the edamame was also good. If you're looking for decent sushi and in the area stop by and give it a try.

We love Yami sushi!! I been in Portland for 2 years now moved from Hawaii and you know how we Hawaii people love fresh sushi- took a while to find this place as at the time the reviews weren't so great. I have been to all the 5 star sushi places in Portland that were raved about only to find it disappointing. Brought my family visiting from Hawaii to Bamboo sushi..we were horrified to find nothing great about the place besides the hype- We now come to yami once a week for dinner sushi chef does a great job staff is friendly- yes sometimes they do get busy and the wait is a bit but id rather wait forever for good sushi.

    (5)
  • Esmeralda B.

Wow, I'm very impressed. Food was delicious and you could taste everything was fresh. The waiters were very helpful and there were several who checked on us several times making sure we had everything we needed. I didn't know how big the serving sizes were so when I ordered 3 plates of CA rolls (my daughter could live off that) they came back and double checked with me to see if I really intended to eat that much food. We happened to show up at a perfect time because it quickly got busy and people were having to wait for a table. This is deff our new sushi place.

    (4)
  • Jeremy L.

Great food, friendly service. Kane is a Rockstar!!! The staff were very willing to accommodate our large group of 30 people without hesitation. Definitely return here again.

  • Georgie K.

This is my favorite lunch spot when I work in this hood. Have been here many times. Sushi is fresh and delicious and great udon noodle soup. Service is great and decent prices. One my favorite sushi/Japanese food spots.

    (5)
  • Danielle W.

Pros: Good food. Cost is normal $6-13,for a made at your request joint. Cons: Sat me at the "bar". Waited for over 25 minutes to have my ticket taken. On busy days think about wait and be prepared to wait.

    (5)
  • Ashley H.

Good quality sushi for a decent price. I ordered to go when I walked in and it only took 10min tops. Their sushi is fresh, great tasting, and is a good size. Gresham really needed a good sushi restaurant. Hopefully they'll make Bento Plus go out of business...

    (5)
  • Bo A.

The best Japanese food near me, and possibly in all of Gresham that I've had so far. We ordered the teriyaki chicken with some nigiri and it came faster than a blink of an eye. The servers are sweet and kind and always check up on you. The food is delicious and very quality. Worth the price! And friend and family friendly.

    (5)
  • Starla K.

The food is great!! I'm a regular. My husband and I go there at least once a week. The reason I give them 4 stars is because their customer service isn't the best!!

    (4)
  • Vitaliy Gerasimov G.

The food was delicious. Their tea was really good. We Went with kids and it was nice place. Not loud and not messy at all. Clean.

  • Becky B.

Nice place for sushi in our neighborhood. This is a family run place with clean and friendly atmosphere. Food is well prepared, tastes very fresh. I had major cravings for this sushi when I was pregnant! I come in occasionally and have always been very happy.

I grew up in Gresham, moved away when I was 18, and just returned a few months ago. Never in my 28 years has there ever been--or could I ever have predicted--a sushi restaurant to be good in Gresham. Gresham has delicious local fare, there are some good coffee shops, and Jazzy's, but nothing more. Yami does a great job of mixing things up and they make good food. The rolls are a bit large and unwieldy, but they're tasty. I also had the spicy teriyaki. Very spicy but delicious.

    (4)
  • Brian C.

Amazing food. Very attractive server makes everything better :) WORTH THE DRIVE FROM ANYWHERE.

    (5)
  • Marian L.

This is one of the best sushi places in Portland, let alone Gresham. The sushi with the baked muscles on top is insane.

    (5)
  • Chris J.

Good food, good service, okay pricing for its location. I didn't get a chance to try the teriyaki, but it looks appetizing.

    (4)
  • Rachael T.

    Best Sushi in Gresham :)

    (5)
  • Eric H.

Came here for lunch with 12 people. Serve was attentive and helpful. Since we had so many people, the owner gave us complimentary appetizers to help with our wait. The food was good and was pretty big. I don't like cucumber so they substituted it with avocado for me. Will be back

    (5)
  • John K.

Came with a large group of 10-15 people. Service was great! Food came out fast and chef gave us complimentary dishes. Sushi and teriyaka both tasted great. Would highly recommend for people who love teriyaki and good service.

    (5)
  • Jesse M.

Great teriyaki. Really good sushi. My 15 year old and I can't get enough of the dragon roll. Their special rolls as you walk in are always great too.

    (4)
  • Erin B.

Foods good but EXTREMELY overpriced for just as good food across the street at ' Joy Teriyaki.' Not sure I'd go back.

    (3)
  • Rich A.

Great quick teriyaki joint. We only had the California Rolls so no comment about the sushi. The orange chicken and chicken teriyaki were great. Very reasonable prices for our family of three. We will be back.

    (4)
  • Shirley K.

They have very good teriyaki and sushi! The sashimi is very fresh and the rolls are made very well. Their presentation makes you want to order everything off the menu. I usually go here when I'm in Portland. I recommend everyone to go here for sushi if in the area!

    (5)
  • Marina S.

Great food, great price. We have eaten there before but usually call in an order for pick up. Order ready for pick up within 15 min and always made fresh.

    (5)
  • Kelli R.

We eat here once a week at least. Often for take out. It is always good and the service is always great!

    (5)
  • Hayley P.

The food was super good. The crispy rolls are the perfect texture. The miso soup is deliciouse. Although we weren't quite sure how it worked when we saw the menu cards on the table. Very clean too :)

    (5)
  • Richard L.

Great sushi. Try a volcano roll. All specialty rolls are unique and delicious. Service is great. Wonderful family environment. Unlike most sushi places no tv which my family prefers.

    (5)
  • Angela S.

So I am not a sushi snob but I've had the privilege of having good and fresh sushi. I am normally a sashimi lover; however when I asked if they had it bc it wasn't on the menu, I was told they are prepared on the morning-otherwise not fresh. The food is over salty and has way more rice than needed. It's good for those that don't eat sushi often or that drunk or high night when the craving is just that.

    (2)
  • Christina F.

Extremely amazing food, their sushi is amazing quality. If you're used to going to Sushi Land or Sushiville then I recommend you don't come here because you'll never want to go back to that stuff. The Teryaki is also really great. It's reasonably priced considering the quality of the food.

    (5)
  • Cherry K.

Really fresh and delicious nigiri and sushi rolls, tons of variety. Clean and friendly atmosphere (bathroom being clean was also a plus). I will be sure to come back, I've found my new favorite sushi spot!!!

    (5)
  • Karen K.

Very good sushi! Fresh and so yummy! Great food for the price. In many ways, better than Sinju Sushi. Service could be faster but I like it because they are sincere and very very very nice. I'm so happy that this quality sushi place is in Gresham. Gresham finally great a good sushi place!!

    (5)
  • Andrea R.

This place was pretty mediocre. Being understaffed during lunch time was a big part of the problem. It took at least 20 mins to get our drinks (water) and that was after we had been served our first roll. I ordered the sunset roll and my fiancé ordered the Vegas roll, and we shared the curry rice which was a brand new dish according to our waitress. The rolls were just ok, while the rice was pretty tasty. The price point was typical. Might come here again, just because it deserves a second chance.

    (3)
  • Alicia M.

Good sushi in Gresham? YES! Yami not only has fresh and beautifully presented sushi, but the have really friendly staff as well! If you're in a lunch break, they'll have a delish chicken teriyaki bowl put together for you in under five minutes - even if you don't call ahead. While I have only sampled a small section of their menu, I never had a bad meal here. Nor I have I had bad service. Give them a try!

    (5)
  • Chris C.

I normally don't leave comments on food but i gotta say, they know how to make sushi and provide good services. There was a group of customers that was very rude and mean to the waitresses and they still did their best to satisfy those punks. Great service with great positive attitude. i mma go there today again.

  • Cory G.

You would think that their "Hot Night Roll" would be just that, hot (as in spicy). Despite the thin sliver of jalapeno on top, it had very little heat to it; trust me, I like my heat. Don't get me wrong, the sushi was decent, just not on par with what I would expect from a good sushi place. It is in a strip mall so my bad for expecting anything different. One major issue with this place is the "to-go" line that tends to congregate around meal time. On one occasion, an elderly woman and her son had been waiting at the table after being seated for quite a while as the staff serviced the to-go line. Upon requesting a server to attend them, they were greeted with a "we will get to you" statement. They immediately picked up their belongings and left the restaurant without so much as a comment from the staff next to the door. Poor customer service along with decent, yet uninspiring food will not bring me back to this place. 2 stars...

  • Terence L.

Hmm, I just came home from having a terrible lunch at Yami Sushi and decided I would check out the yelp reviews. Imagine my surprise when they were mostly 5 stars!! I thought I just had the worse meal I have had since I moved to Portland 6 months ago from San Francisco. Since I arrived I have had some of the best food I have ever had and this place just did not measure up. I can't recall the name of the roll I had but it was so salty as to be uneatable. I ate just two of the pieces. I also had the teriyaki bowl. The chicken was tough and the teriyaki was just not that flavorful. So, bottom line, I will not be going back. I am giving them two stars instead of 1 because the staff was extremely friendly and that I appreciate.

  • Annie C.

We eat sushi...a lot. This is the best place in the Gresham area for rolls with creativity. Love the rolls with mango...

  • Sherry S.

Always excited about a new sushi place out in the Far East so I was so disappointed when I popped the first one in my mouth. Rice is hard, fish has no flavor. Dang! Had another one from a different roll. Blasé.. They have sushi "cakes" besides the normal rolls. Never heard of but they are basically squares instead of being round. The restaurant being new is clean and the windows give the place a lot of light. I always order sushi when I go to sushi places but maybe I have to come back to this one and try the other items on the menu instead.

    (2)
  • Ahthee K.

It's ok, but not certainly something to rave about. Sadly we got desperate for sushi and definitely didn't want sushi ville or drive to sushi land so we settle for this. I just had ramen noodles, and to be honest I made something like that the day before at home so I felt like it was a package ramen. I've gave this place to many tries already. I'll settle for a 3 star.

    (3)
  • Tiffany G.

Such good sushi!! We've come 4 times since moving to the PNW. The sashimi deluxe is beautiful and amazing cuts of fun fish. The BSC scallop roll is so decadent!! Anything you get will be delicious. Staff is friendly and didn't mind cleaning up after our 18 mo. Old when she spilt water everywhere. Great atmosphere, quality of fish, price and service. What more can you ask for???

    (5)
  • Brianna S.

A diamond in the ruff. I went to this place last night and got the best spicy tuna roll EVER! Now most places give you more spicy and less tuna but this place.....man you will just have to check it out. The staff is nice and quick. The place is super clean. Last but far from least is the PRICE - GREAT. Especially for the portion. Since they are close to my house I have a feeling better yet I know I sound will soon become a regular. Hey if you live in Gresham and hate always having to go downtown (which I avoid as much as possible) to get good sushi give this place a try and you will like this place. I promise.

    (5)
  • Karla B.

Good food, but high prices for what you get. Beware of the "to go" crowd. The kitchen will favor them over seated customers and service will suffer as a result.

    (4)
  • Craig S.

I figured as my first review Yami's would be worth busting my "cherry" so to speak. The spicy tuna rolls here are amazing, so amazing in fact that my wife that has only tried sushi once before Yami's can't get enough of it now. And there's something here for everyone, the chicken teriyaki is the best I have ever had. And although I haven't tried them they have some traditional American style Chinese dishes like orange chicken and whatnot. Forget about the location, this is a traditional family run authentic place, a truly hidden gem.

    (5)
  • Brandon M.

Below average... This business is clean and the sushi was fresh and plated well, however, the staff is not knowledgable about the fish they carry, unfriendly and burdened by any changes to an order, and in general don't make you feel welcome. There are many sushi places around and if you are going to take the time and money to go out, you will be better served elsewhere.

    (2)
  • Allison K.

Great sushi for a great price! Best sushi in Gresham! I came here with my youth group and it was amazing! We got chicken teriyaki and mochi! Chocolate, mango, green tea, and also strawberry. Delicious food for a great price. Come check out yami sushi if you are in the neighborhood!

    (5)
  • Susie J.

Great food but slow terrible service, It's amazing how long I waited for an order to go so I learned to call it in first and I still waited 20 mins after I got there

    (2)
  • Jeff H.

While visiting friends in Gresham for a few days, I ended up coming here on two consecutive days for lunch. It is some of the best sushi I've ever had! My local friends agreed that it was the best around. Great taste, large rolls, friendly & quick service, and good prices. I will certainly go back next time I'm in the Portland area.

Went here tonight cause its close to my house and I will have to admit I was a bit biased as I've already read the menu cause my room mate had a to go menu at the house and I wasn't really impressed especially with the pricepoint. Decor and cleanliness in the restaurant is pretty good and the service is moderately good and attentive. I ordered the spicy tuna roll, Unagi, and the spicy chicken teriyaki with no rice extra salad. The spicy tuna roll I enjoyed. What I like about it is that they didn't use a sriracha mayo mix into the tuna and developed their own spiciness without taking away from the true flavor of the tuna. The unagi wasn't too bad but I did find the piece of eel a little on the fatty side. As for the spicy teriyaki, It wasn't too bad either but I didn't like the fact that they infused a sweet spicy chili sauce in the mix that kind of took over the flavor. I did however enjoyed the salad very much that came with the meal and it was lightly dressed with some kind of honey mustard style dressing. Overall, I think its an ok place. Price point is about right for what they are serving there and service isn't too bad. As for the sushi itself, I found it be a little on the small side but their attention to detail I will say is very good. I would recommend this place as it is something that is close by if you live out in Gresham but if the effort is needed I would rather go to my regular spots. Happy Eating Everyone.

Don't let the fact that Yami is located in a strip mall freak you out. This place is legit. The service was great and the food was even better! We both got a large amount of sushi because we're gluttons. The crunchy roll is fantastic and so is the volcano roll. My husband loved his squid nigiri. We will be returning!

Terrif food but be clear on your order asked for a seaweed salad got a cucumber salad asked for sashimi got sushimi

My friend Julie and I met for lunch here today; we're always checking out new Japanese places to eat. I'd seen the Grand Opening sign on Yami Sushi about two weeks ago, so we decided to try it out. Everything is wonderfully new and fresh: the menus, the seating, the decor. There are gorgeous orchids (yes, living ones!) and attractive displays everywhere. I particularly liked that the tables weren't squished together. If I remember right, Julie figured out that there's seating for about 48 people, including a large group table at the rear of the area. There's a sushi bar as well. We were greeted right away by our server and told we could sit anywhere we wanted. We chose a table next to the window in the front. The menu is full of yummy looking stuff to eat. There's a big sushi menu on the inside pages, a lunch special, and kinds of dinner choices. I should've brought home a take-out menu (yes, they have that too) so that I could tell you a lot more stuff that's on the menu. I ordered the Tempura Roll and Julie had teriyaki chicken. Almost before we could say a word, Julie's food arrived; mine took a bit longer but not by much. The plates were very attractively arranged. My sushi roll looked like a caterpillar, with sauce for its legs. The pieces of tempura stuck straight up...actually, it looked more like the Loch Ness Monster at that point...it was beautiful! My tempura was perfect - not doughy, not oily in the least. It was crisp and delicious. Julie's chicken was finger-lickin' good as well. One of the things I liked best about was the music playing softly in the background. It was varied, from modern day ballads to guitar instrumentals, and was not intrusive in the least. It made our dining experience even better. While we were there, several people came in for take out meals, and they'd obviously been there before. The location is good, right across from Safeway near the corner of Powell Boulevard and 181st (Highland Blvd south of Powell). Egress can be a little slow if people are coming out from McD's and use the same driveway. But why would you want to eat fast food when really good food is just a parking lot away? I'm giving Yami Sushi 5 stars without reservation (no pun intended!). Although the business is new, I think it has a great future in Gresham. Fast, friendly service, a beautiful atmosphere, and good food. We will be back!

    (5)
  • Ron C.

Rolls were big and fulfillng. The tempura was very fresh along with all others. We were disappointed in the canned Mango used though, which made the rolls very sweet and uneatable. Service was great and enjoyed the atmosphere. We will be back, but will not order anything with Mango Tip: Parking is limited. We parked at McDonalds.

Alright. Yami Sushi and Teriyaki is NOW the best Japanese in Gresham. It used to be a tie with Bento Plus on account of Yami's service was downright awful, but it has now improved dramatically. At this point Yami is by far the freshest, fastest, and most friendly Japanese cuisine in town. Make sure to try the Little Tokyo rolls!!!

  • InternationalTraveler ..

great local find, been here a few times, there is sushi and other dishes. I've only had the sushi but the other food looked great too. Place smells good, my first clue that things are being done right. Good service. Yes the sushi is delish

I've come by a few more times since they're very close. The hostess is lovely, she's nice and we know her well by now; but she often forgets to put enough utensils or put out enough tea for the people on the table (so we had to remind her) when we dine there. We're so used to this already, she got away with it because we're all friendly with each other, I usually get nitpicky because I tip rather well (yeah, honking a lil' horn there) but I digress. My family really enjoy their sushi; the size is nice compared to other sushi places for the price (which is not cheap, but moderate; not too expensive as well). They have awesome size for their teriyaki dish (holy nut batman); so although it may appear more than other teriyaki place; it is worth it. Do watch out for the price on the menu and make sure they stick by it when the time comes; sometimes they charge you 1 or 2 dollars per dish, more than what the menu said; and don't even realize it, it's happened to us a few times. They may want to redo their menu (change the price) to avoid confusion. And when you tip, probably need to leave cash by the table or tip jar because when I tipped via my card; they never took out the tip.

We went for the first time tonight and will definitely return! Fresh, delicious food and reasonably priced. The restaurant was extremely clean and our waiter was polite and friendly.

Clean. Clean. Clean. A friendly helpful staff. Seasoned veterans quickly deliver beautiful rolls and nigiri. Food is fresh and flavorful. A nice Americanized sushi spot.

So I will start this off with saying that I am used to paying ALLOT less for sushi and teriyaki, however that being said sometimes the merry go round is just not the ambience a couple is looking for when dining out. We ordered the Monkey Brains, Fried Calamari, Gyoza, Beef Yakisoba, and Jalapeno Tempura. Everything was wonderful and the service was very good too. I do have some suggestions on things the restaurant could do to improve the place. (A) Get rid of the overhead flourescent lights and use something dimmer, (B) Play Japanese music instead of Christmas Music. (C) Offer some sauce choices for the appetizers and sushi rolls for the customer to expand their flavor horizons The fried calamari was good but served as a fairly small portion for the $6 price tag. The Beef Yakisoba was fairly light on the meat. All in all we were treated like loyal customers on our first visit and I left a hefty tip to show I was grateful. It had been a horrible day for my wife and I and they helped end it with a much lighter / positive note. I will be back. Who can resist Sushi or Teriyaki mere blocks from their own home?

    (4)
  • Chris T.

This has become my local "go to" for sushi. Really great sushi at a reasonable price. And my kids absolutely love the teriyaki bowls. I'd recommend highly to anyone who asked. Very friendly staff also.

Better than average chicken teriyaki. The Oregon Roll is THE BOMB. Nice decor, very peaceful. The price is right. Took my kids there for the first time today, they give it 2 thumbs up.

The food is fabulous, the best I think in our area. The decor is nice, the staff is super friendly. The thing that impressed me the most (besides how good the food is) was the presentation. Everything is so pretty, you almost don't want to eat it. The sushi rolls come out looking like dragons or Caterpillars, its absolutely amazing. I would eat there ever chance I could, but it is on the spendy side. My daughter and I ate dinner one night and the ticket was just over $30. It was totally worth it though. We have been a handful of times since they opened, and we will continue to return.

It is a refreshing change to talk about a restaurant that is actually worthy of a good review. This new Japanese Bistro is called Yami Sushi and Teriyaki and it is one of the best Sushi, Teriyaki and Japanese Bistros in the Greater Portland area. After living in Japan for over a year and falling in love with both sushi and teriyaki, I have searched in vain for comparable Japanese cuisine. However, Yami Sushi and Teriyaki was a breath of much needed fresh air. The slight differences between different sushi restaurants may seem small, but the subtle differences are truly what separate mediocre sushi to the truly extraordinary. First, the freshness of the fish and other ingredients at Yami Sushi and Teriyaki was truly unparalleled. Even my children in elementary school loved the sushi! Next the rice was authentically seasoned and complemented the various kinds of sushi extremely well, creating a tasty harmony. Another appealing surprise was the affordability. In our group of 6 adults and 4 children there was something that everyone, including two vegetarians and one very picky child loved. =) The first thing that stuck out was the presentation of the creative, beautiful rolls comprised of raw, seared, or fried salmon, tuna, prawns, and more. Next the charbroiled teriyaki chicken and short ribs were equally delicious. The wide variety of Sashimi (sliced assorted raw fish) signature rolls and grilled foods convinced me to never again settle for sushi served on conveyer belts. Lastly, the service was spectacular. Although it was busy, our waitress answered all one thousand of not just our questions but our children's as well, all with a cheerful smile. Lastly, cleanliness of tables, windows, utensils, countertops, floors, facilities, etc. were very clean. The waitress said that this was their grand opening last week and all of the furniture and decorations (which were very cute) were brand new, so the level of cleanliness was absolutely pristine. I normally don't write reviews but I was truly impressed by the atmosphere, service, cleanliness, and most of all the food. I would recommend this restaurant to couples, families, or even single diners. Whether you only have a 15 minute break before heading back to work or an hour to dine and socialize with a coworker or friend, the sushi bar is an extremely delicious, efficient, and healthy way to spend your afternoon lunch. Perhaps the most important aspect of this contemporary bistro is use of the freshest ingredients and absolutely no use of MSG. Not even a minuscule of flavor is sacrificed even though the food is extraordinarily healthy.

Omgoodness. This place is so yummy! I thoroughly enjoyed a full bento type dinner. It was all so fresh, even the california rolls were delish...and that's a rarity! I'm definitely going back and taking friends.

We visited Yami on opening day and will definitely be back! The sushi was incredibly fresh, the restaurant was clean and inviting, and the service was friendly and welcoming. Sushi prices are comparable to many other Portland sushi restaurants and we were pleasantly surprised by the size of the sushi rolls. Yami may easily become our weekly sushi restaurant since there are so many great sushi rolls on the menu and it's right down the street from our house. It's great to finally have a sushi restaurant in the Gresham area that feels like a quality Portland sushi restaurant. If you're in the area, Yami is definitely worth a visit. Be sure to try the Hot Night sushi roll!
