Went at 6 on a Saturday night. Pub was over half full but not busy. Service was very prompt. This location serves typical pub food, sandwiches were good and came out quickly. I still prefer Heinz ketchup to the Portland ketchup company offering served at mcmenamins but hey the local stuff probably fits in better. The strawberry lemonade was really good, and Ive always been a fan of terminator stout.

I was meeting a friend here and she was sitting at the bar for 10 minutes and texted me while I was en route that no one had greeted her yet. She asked the bartender if she should move to a different section was met with this reply "yeah, you can sit wherever." By the time I arrived my friend said several other people and their parties who had arrived after her had been greeted and had their drink orders taken. At this point, it had been over 20 minutes and a server came to our table. All he said was, "what can I get for you?" We ordered the wine sampler. He replied, "just so you know that's going to take a while to come out." My friend and I just look at each other like, wth? No acknowledgement of how long we had been waiting, no apology, he was impersonal, and short. We both have extensive customer service backgrounds and were appalled. We love McMenamins, but it is starting to become common to go to their locations and receive mediocre to poor customer service. I do not recommend this location. Very poor customer service. We will never come back to this location again!

Right when I walked in, the server didn't bother to look at us and just said sit wherever. When I finally sat down, the waitress was rushing us to order and when we did order the food it took 45 mins to cook. All we order was Cajun tots and a sandwich. Also the restaurant was no where near busy with only about 6 other people at the bar. Half way thru eating the waitress came back and kept rushing the check on me like she was trying to get me out ASAP. Never coming back again!

We're not huge fans of McMenamins these days, unfortunately. We've had a bad experience at both the Sunnyside Pub and Edgefield- Sunnyside used to be a daily haunt a few blocks from our home where we'd meet our friend (who worked next door to the pub) after work for happy hour. Same ol' story as the other McMenamins- the happy hour dwindled and that particular Sunnyside pub hired a really awful waitress (Alex, NOT Lexi- Lexi was WONDERFUL). Anyway, Highland Pub actually gives the best service among the McMenamins that we've been to (and we've been to MANY of them). Today we sat down to a beer and sandwich- my partner ate; I was indulging in a carefully planned protein bar as I like to keep the caloric room available for the things I really love (Like Pad Thai kitchen tomorrow with friends). I did order a green mint tea that was loose leaf and a nice step up from the tea they once served. Today we were waited on by Sarah, who was a really nice girl, like her fellow waiters and waitresses at this location. My partner has a weakness for tuna salad sandwiches, and despite having been removed from the menu, they'll always make it for her if she requests it, and she does so often, as this is one of our go-to places to get her a late-night meal. I have to say- we've ordered burgers and the hot dog on their happy hour, and haven't been able to love those items. I have always preferred their brewers salad, but seldom order much as, like I said, I budget my calories. However, their Cajun tots, fresh cut fries, and sandwiches are actually really good. Their selection of beer is reliably delicious and the service at Highland is ALWAYS welcoming and friendly. I am giving this a four star because, as a place to go in and order simple things like fries, sandwiches, tots, or beer, it's a convenient place that delivers. I would probably not indulge in a full meal at any McMenamins though. Once bitten.

I've been to I'd say just about 50% of all McMenamins in the Pacific Northwest as part of my quest to become a cosmic tripster! I enjoyed the Highland Pub because it was low-key and the staff was super friendly. They gave us an ad-hoc tour of the brewery which was awesome - and earned us an extra stamp! :-) It is not anywhere close to where I live but if I happen to find myself in Gresham again, I'd pop-in for a quick beer to see what the brewmaster concocted.

Let me begin with this USED to be one of my top 5 places to recommend people. Tonight we walked in and though the new guy wasn't supposed to be our waiter I'm glad he was...Alicia was supposed to be our server but she had something against the new guy and was bad mouthing him with in ear shot while trying to look busy. The 3 other female servers looked at us then ignored us for 7 minutes. He was busting tables when the waitress we'll refer to as Red was repeatedly walking past us but never acknowledged us. Again Alicia was our server but she watched us sit there while she did pretend side work behind the counter in the kitchen watching our guy scramble to do all the "actual" work. The two L's....were snarky in tone when new guy asked for information and when Alecia came to the table after she watched the new guy take our order and asked if we needed menu's. Alicia....I would fire your behind so fast for what you pulled tonight. So he got the tip. I originally thought I left my debit card and was gonna have to drive all the way home in Woodstock and come back...turns out it was in a side pocket. When I went back in I waited for new guy who's name I didn't get I wish I had he was cute. But Alicia snotty twit that she is said "oh I've got your ticket...." in a really wicked witch of the east tone...I said...but he was our server... She charged me for cheddar when it came with the meal and got snotty when I looked at the menu. I gave HER nothing and walked his 20%... over and let him know that she tried to take his tip. I'm calling the manager tomorrow I can't believe how bad the service has gotten and the new guy doesn't stand a chance with the four bitches of eastMc...minemans....against him. Oh AND the pierced one behind the bar kept picking her nose ring and biting her nails...Ew gross. Massive FAIL FOR EVERYONE BUTT THE NEW GUY. HE'S THE ONLY REASON THEY GOT TWO STARS....

This is another McMenamins in a strip mall. But this also the location of one of their breweries. I had the Bittersweet Street IPA, which was very good. Hungry? Try the Scooby Snacks (mini corn dogs with yellow mustard). They were just the thing for a light lunch and beer.

This is not a bad review on the food! Stricly Service..We visit alot of Mcmenamins, the food is always good... especially since we have passports. Well on our visit to this one the server (Geayl) was way not interested in us because we didn't order food, even let our beers sit there empty and ask if we need anything else... we just wanted to have a couple beers and get our stamps and our 8th prize.. finally after asking her several times to please stamp our passports and she just continued to talk to some guy at the front and walk around doing whatever she could to not stamp them...I finally asked another server to stamp them.. he gladly stamped them and gave us our prize... and we gave him a nice tip.. sorry I didn't get his name because he deserves to be mentioned.. he had a beard..

Waiter with the longer hair and hairband touching hair and then plates. Ew. Pastrami sitting out partially weighed and into servings in a container out on the counter THE ENTIRE TIME WE WERE THERE 40 MINUTES. Seriously lacking in food handling rules. Seriously unsafe.

I tend to like the atmosphere of all the McMenamins so I'm slightly partial. If I'm being critical and honest... The place was clean, empty and the staff was friendly and laid back. None of which is a bad thing but nothing extravagant and that stands out. Food was fine but did not stand out either. That of course is not the fault of the cook mainly the fact that it isn't a restaurant that serves all freshly made foods or anything special. Some of the food is frozen and what not. I'd still come here again if I was in the area.

This place is near my inlaws, and I stop regularly when visiting. The staff is very friendly, the food is good and the beer is great. the staff was extra friendly on this visit and I had several good conversations.

I would definitely take my review with a grain of salt for two reasons. 1. Its my first time here since 2005 2. I only ordered a beer. I came here this evening to just have a post dinner drink. I really didn't know what I wanted but at that very moment but a Rubinator sounded so good at time. I came in wasn't greeted by anyone. My friend and I sit up at the bar only to have the bartender at that very moment tell us she was off the for the night and the other bartender would serve us. Not that I minded, but wouldn't you want to serve a customer sitting at the bar even though you're off and no one has bothered to greet let alone ask for their order? The bartender finally comes up and takes our order. I ended up ordering a Rubinator which should of really been called a "Termaruby" because it was literally all Terminator with a small hint of Ruby somewhere in that dark brew. I slowly begrudgingly drink this beer. My friend and I ended up talking for a while and every time the bartender came up to do cleaning around us it was like he was trying hard to be a part of this conversation. Hard to say if I minded or not but it was a little annoying. Maybe it was just an off night for the bartender or maybe I should not take it too seriously when an off duty bartender which is behind the bar blows you off because they are getting off work. I'll probably give this place another chance but count on me being somewhat more protective the next time I'm around this joint.

With only a few other people here on a Sunday afternoon, I was waited on and served incredibly fast. The cajun tots were to die for (as usual), and I had the grateful veg burger which was the best burger I have ever had. No regrets on coming here!

We had dinner at McMenamins Highland pub again tonight and I realized I've never put a review on yelp. Chris was our server and I was really impressed and how much knowledge he had about their product. From my uninformed description of my tastes and what I did not like in a beer, Chris brought me two samples to try out. One I really enjoyed and was happy to order. But his description actually taught me more about the process of ordering beer. Dinner at McMenamin's is always tasty. The food is not what I would consider high-end, however, it is always good. Tonight's dinner was very well prepared. The food was delivered quickly and it was very hot and fresh. This is a place we go often later in the evening. I've never been bothered by children or drunks. It's a comfortable place to hang out with friends.

If, for no other reason, go here to see the most wonderful vintage glass chandelier, (Mcmenamins calls it out as the psychedelic-Italianate chandelier)that's basically hidden in the dormers. It's as if they are storing it for some future use. It used to be at the Crystal ballroom (or it is its sibling) and I believe Janis Joplin even sang under it once. It's truly stunning. Aside from all that, this place has a real nice laidback feel to it. This is one of the really old McMenamins restaurants and it has its own charm because of that. Don't get me wrong. It's clean and all that and you can see the place where the beer's brewed (or used to be brewed) through some glass windows. It's got mahogany running through the building. It has some old hippie type plants hanging and funky curtains to go with. I loved that I had not one, but two choices of vegetarian burgers. I decided to go with the hemp burger as I've never had one. It was pretty decent as it had a pomegranate/walnut spread over it. I got a side of salad with raspberry vinegarette dressing. The service cannot be too bad here either as the place is not really big enough for the servers to get lost and forget you, like in some McMenamin establishments.

I went to the Highland Pub for the first time last night, and had a good experience. The food was good, the server was nice, and the chandelier was really awesome. A little bit over priced for pub food, but whatever. Also, I left my cell phone there and didn't realize it for a few hours. Called them, frantic, and my server answered and told me she had it. I went back and got it from her, thank god. It's a pretty nice phone and she could have kept it, sold it, whatever, but she was honest and held on to it for me. I am so grateful for good people :)

don't know what the food would've tasted like tonight because after waiting at a dirty table for fifteen minutes we walked out. server shortages are not a customer's problem. no one wants to spend their hard earned cash on a bad experience. thanks again for another bad time mcmenamins.

My husband kept telling me about this place, so we went our first week in Portland from Los Angeles. He has been crazy about trying all the different beers that Oregon has to offer. He loved the seasonal Irish Stout they had. The food, appetizers, and desert are pretty awesome. The first time I had a yummy turkey sandwich with a cranberry type of jelly. The second time we went to a different one closer to our apartment and I had a yummy pastrami sandwich, which was superb. We also purchased some of their spicy Dijon mustard, which was delicious and they have this organic ketchup rather than the usual Heinz 57. My husband had a hamburger which was made with a lot of TLC. Really close to homemade. The overall ambiance is really nice as well. Some of the waiters are kind of flat, and, or not enthusiastic, but it didn't bother me. We went both times when the place is a ghost town, so maybe it was just the early crew. Food was good and Restauraunt was clean, which is all I'm worried about.

Really, only one review for McMenamins out here? Does no one in Gresham know how to eat? Oh yeah..... look who I'm asking, Gresham and foodie do not go hand in hand. I wouldn't say McMenamin's is a 'foodie place' but you know what you're going to get. A damn tasty burger, some killer cajun tots, all for $4.50 at daily happy hour! There's a reason McMenamin's owns such a huge portion of bars in this city, they're good. Their beers are decent too. The caramel ale brownie with ice cream is good enough that I'd give it up on the first date... (To the brownie, I'm married) But really, McMenamin's just does it right. Laid back, chill atmosphere, good food, awesome rotating specials, killer happy hour, and my HEART. Sure it's not a place you go all the time, but it's one that you go when you don't want to be dissapointed. That's exactly the reason people don't go to Gresham. The only reason people come to Gresham is for Garage sales, and that's just to buy their stuff back. See how I ruined one of my favorite jokes? That's how I roll.

Food is good (by McMenamins standards), but they're always running out of whatever drink you want to order, whether it's hard cider or orange soda. If water wasn't pumped into the building they'd probably run out of that too.

The food at this mcmenn is always just ok. Today the hammerhead seemed overly carbonated which is odd but hey, I've had about a hundrd of them as a local so I noticed! Waitstaff was nice but seemed to take a while. Just an odd pub but at least it's near home.

Pretty good food and service. maybe the best place to eat and drink in the area.

Typical American food. High priced. Over priced, as a matter of fact. Very good service from our waitress. No problems there. Just wouldn't go out of my way to recommend the food. Not like it's bad ............ just non memorable.

Great little pub. We went for lunch and the service was great, food was good and microbrews even better.

My wife and I have been periodic patrons for years. The Highland Pub is a McMenamin's so you know you're gonna get good food, brews and service. The building may not be in the historical redo tradition but it's still a good hang.

Another Mcmenamins that lacks service. I do like their philly cheesesteak sandwich, but this place isn't anything special.

  • Tracy H.

I don't drink so I don't go here for the beer (although my husband claims that the ale is real good), I love their burgers. And their gyro, according to husband, is to die for. The service is top notch, the servers very friendly. Believe it or not, it's a family-friendly environment, my kid loves it here, they doted on him when he came to eat here. He gets his crayons to distract him until his food comes. Location can't be beat, 5 minutes away from home :) Price is decent, food is great for the price, nice big portion too. The only con is the waiting time. Pretty long wait every time we went. Perhaps this is when ordering a drink comes in handy. Or appetizers... Definitely will keep coming back to this location.

  • Julia L.

The waitress was nice enough... I keep trying to give the staff the benefit of the doubt. Maybe they had cataracts or some disability that kept their pace as slow as a herd of turtles stampeding through peanut butter. I will say this, though... I got 1/2 turkey sandwich w/ fries. Mis amigos got Cajun style tot's and pita bread/hummus plate. Everything was super cheap (it was happy hour) and super delish. If your pressed for time, hit up Safeway across the street instead because like I've stated, they don't seem to run by regular person clock standards. Otherwise, it's clean, low-key, good spot for grub with some pals.

I am easy to please, all I ask at a restaurant is that you give me the food I ordered, prepared the way the menu said, in a reasonable amount of time. We used to like coming here for a late dinner because it was one of the few places besides Shari's still open in Gresham after 10pm. Well we haven't been back since we walked into an almost empty restaurant, and ordered a couple drinks, waited at least 10 minutes while our waiter talked to the off duty waitress at the bar and then went and had a smoke before pouring our beer. Flirting is important, fine I can understand. The cook on the other hand is not so easily forgiven. We ordered simple food, a burger and a wilted spinach salad. Somehow, the burger made it to the table before my salad(an hour after we ordered) And yet in all that time my spinach didn't even manage to kiss a frying pan, as it was still crisp and cold. At least the vinaigrette was good.

Let's see......... the defination of insanity is going to the same place and expecting different results! Today was the end of me, waiting patiently and after 5 or 6 "ignored experiences" I walked out. Better having a beer at home with your wife. Don't waste your money, you deserve better

    (1)
  • Melissa P.

Damn you McMenamins. Gah! Why is it, that everytime I come to you, usually with work folks for lunch, the service is glacier slow, the food takes forevs (and we pre-ordered bitches), and I pay like $17 for a salad and root beer. Alright, maybe a black and tan brownie, WHICH you now tell me is being phased out for a new brownie with cake crumbles or some other puke on it. I wish I could drink at lunch and then get in a fight with you, kick you in your chain-restaurant bolz (thanks Gabe C.), then dump my drink on your bad hairdo.
