Excellent "Americanized" Chinese food. Service, cleanliness, and cost to quality ratio were all very good. They are open until 11 PM on Saturday night; which is awesome for those with late evening munchies. I ordered the General Tso's Chicken (my favorite dish) and it definitely impressed.

Love this place!! You get what you payed for and more. My family and I won't eat Chinese anywhere else. We've been costumer for years. I've turned many people to this place, not one has said they didn't love it. My favorite thing in the menu: beef and broccoli. Dine-in or take out. The portions are still huge. You get your meal in minutes and the service is pretty great too.

Ordered the General Tso's chicken and pork fried rice to go. Opened the box when I got home and could hardly see the chicken due to thier being so much sauce. The sauce was dark brown (strange to begin with) and made the dish resemble beef stew more than anything. The taste wasn't any better, soggy, fatty chicken. Yuck! The sauce didn't have the slightest hint of spice and was very bland. Will never go here again.

If you like restaurants in the bottom 1% for health inspections, literally, then by all means chow down. Walking into the place should have been my first clue. The back of the building near the dumpster was black from grease and food waste. It was pretty obviouse the building and area around the dumpster hadn't been cleaned for at least a decade. The next clue was when the waitress was pouring water. She had a plastic pitcher that was caked with dirt, I am talking hasn't been washed in months filthy. The food itself was mediocre. The service was as to be expected for the type of restaurant as well. The portion sizes were huge, and the prices were dirt cheap. The food came out in less than ten minutes for a ten top, which means every last bit of it came from a warming tray, and it tasted the part. If that is your thing than you might just walk out thinking you got a deal, but it's nothing Safeway or Panda Express can't pull off better. Regardless, the place was disgustingly dirty. I was actually so concerned that I decided to look the health inspection records up, and low and behold they have one of the lowest health inspection scores in the whole county for five years running. We're talking damn near bottom 1% of restaurants, and this place was packing some major health violations. To be honest I am amazed it hasn't been shut down. Honestly, I can't really see how anyone could recommend this place. It does nothing that a dozen other restaurants can't do far better without the sever health code violations. That's not to say I don't understand a bad day, because I do, but these were systemic prolonged failures. A water pitcher costs a few dollars, so wash it or replace it. If you are two cheap or lazy to manage that small task than the kitchen must a house of horrors.

Do you ever feel like your in a Seinfeld episode where the events that are occurring seem almost made up.. Truman show like? Well my friends, step right up and be prepared for the most mediocre food and service at its best.To start we are in Gresham.. i know.. most people will stop reading right here huh? But if you live in the area and find yourself without a car you can only do so much. Yes i should of noticed the Yelp reviews or the cloud of "what the heck" surrounding this place, but trying not to be a yelp snob i ventured forward with a positive attitude.. A friend and i came here for lunch, we were seated immediately but it seemed water and menu were a foreign concept right off the get go.. I tried to order the most basic meal as i thought that would be the most appropriate meal and should taste good since they are in the lunch rush. Oh how i was wrong.. was inedible my friends.. and if you have had really bad Chinese food, you know what im talking about.. I could go in detail but suffice to say skip this place unless you have some sentimental value going on. I will say the waitresses were busy but lacked common knowledge when it came to coming back to the table for anything.. Truly felt like a walmart experience in which you get your sh*it and get out. I did and much like walmart wont be returning anytime soon. Oh Gresham.

In the past I loved my visits to Chinese Happiness! It was a busy lunch hour & I was a tad disappointed in the staff and the food!

I love this place. I have no idea why they are under delivery though because to my knowledge they don't deliver. I love the chicken fried rice it is like no other and I often just get that and eat it alone as a meal. It has big pieces of chicken and it is a very large portion. I have been going here for years when I was younger and still lived with my parents they would get so excited when I would bring home leftovers from lunch with friend so they loved it too. I do have to be honest about the fact that most of my friends don't love it as much as I do they would probably give it 3 stars. It's very American Chinese. Service inside and take out is super fast and I just love it. This is always the first place I wanna go for Chinese in my area.

I was also skeptical, but my husband and I walked by on a Friday night and they seemed pretty busy so we decided to give it a try. It isn't bad. Nothing we got was incredibly amazing, but I feel like it was pretty good for Americanized Chinese. We got Crab Puffs, Shrimp Lo Mein (The shrimp were clean. I am not sure why other people had this problem.), General Tsuo Tofu, and Veggie Fried rice. It was all tasty, and we got a lot. I would probably get something again when I have an itching for Lo Mein or something, but I wouldn't make it a really regular place to go. Worth a try if you want some Chinese.

I was a bit skeptical of this place at first. I usually an that way about new to me restaurants though. I found out quickly this would be one of my go to places for Chinese. The food is good. On per with other places in the Portland area. Service is fast and staff is super nice. The chow mein isn't what I'm used to coming from California. Crunchy noodles and lots of veggies instead of soft chow mein noodles. Still tasty though. Their Happy Special will feed 2!

Loved this place. Bang for your buck. Huge portions for a cheap price. The owners are extremely friendly and have been around for over 20 years. I will continue to come here. I recommend the pot stickers, general tso's chicken and pork fried rice! Best Chinese place on Gresham.

It had been a long time since my family has been to this place and we after dinner I wondered why. The food is pretty good and the servings are huge! The service was wonderful and they even put up with my mother's corny jokes. Glad we came back.

Average food, service wasn't that great, won't be back due to wrong orders and shorted orders served with attitude.

  • Bob F.

The only good thing about this place is the price. The food is horrible. Not even worth reviewing in detail. The bar for restuarants in this area is set very low. No other way to explain all the people I saw chowing down like it was actually good.

I am the worlds least picky eater. (Not an understatement) I will put down just about anything. At the same time I also know when ingredients and food are a step above. This already being a crappy Christmas without family and such, being that I'm relatively new to the area, I was looking forward to Chinese which I always do. We were told this was best place in town so we ordered up a sweet spread. Unfortunately it was a major let down. She told me 15 mins so I went directly there after getting off the phone. I waited 5 minutes when I got there for my order to be completed. I got home opened everything up and I was instantly bummed out. My Lo mein was completely dry and it dropped out of the box in a hard cube. It wasn't cooked properly cause there were dry hard noodles that never saw sauce. Orange chicken was decent but still a bit odd. The pork fried rice was the same as the Lo mein and it had me thinking I got some food that had been sitting around for hours. The only thing I ate was the potstickers. My crab puffs were crap too! I would not recommend this spot to anybody.

I personally just get bbq pork and white rice so it's hard to mess that up. As I have found in other restaurants the bbq pork is hit or miss on freshness. However the reason for three stars are for two things: My boyfriend is allergic to carrots and peas, so he always asks for his meal with no vegetables. Most of the time he has to send it back or check it before he leaves. We usually would eat there but the lack of refills turned my boyfriend off and he'd usually come in with a large fountain drink from safeway. That's why we've stopped eating there and instead get it to go. I'm still bugged by the fact that no vegetables are so hard for them to understand. He asks for each time we order. Our breakfast place on Powell won't see us for six months and still remember what drinks we all like. We haven't been eating out much and since we both work on the west side we've been eating at a different better place.

Great "American" Chinese food! I have been going here for a few years and have never had a bad experience. This is my go to for local Chinese food. If you're looking for this style Chinese food you can't go wrong. Give it a try.

The Place is filled with little kids screaming, poking their heads up and staring at you. The food we ordered looked pretty ugly. Tasted alright but I still wouldn't feed it to my dog. If your morbidly obese you would probably love this place. Felt like crap when I got home. The owners were very hospitable, two stars

Ordered to go. Wait time was low, got my food quick! I ordered the #7, but substituted garlic chicken for the kung pao. They didnt charge me extra which was great, but the fried rice was dry, and had little meat in it. The garlic chicken was almost all vegetables, but had good flavor. Fried shrimp was a little over breaded as well.

Our family LOVES this place! We've been coming here for years. We are ALWAYS greeted with a smile as soon as we come in, ALWAYS get seated right away even though it's always plenty busy, ALWAYS get great service, and ALWAYS enjoy our meal...ALWAYS. When the inlaws are in town, they always want to go there. When my brother in law and his friend come to town from Phoenix, they INSIST on going there for the Mar Far Chicken. In fact, the last time they came, they were staying in downtown Portland for a convention for a 5 days, yet they made THREE trips to Gresham that week for the Mar Far. The say it's the best they've ever had...and my brother in law travels nationwide and LOVES his food! Our favorites are the Mar Far Chicken, Pork Fried Rice, Kung Pao Chicken (love the sauce and not too hot for my taste), and the Pot Stickers...LOVE their house pot sticker sauce! My daughter and in laws like the Egg Foo Young. The Beef and Broccoli is good too. I used to order the Moo Goo Gai Pan, but have switched to the King Pau now...Moo Goo seems a little tasteless in comparison. The hot tea is always hot and good and they are good about keeping the pot full and the ice water glasses full. I really don't understand the negative comments, except to say that I think Chinese food, of all the varieties of restaurants, seems to have the most variables in how each place fixes the food. I know of other Chinese places that others rave about and I've tried many times, but they always leave me flat and disappointed. I think people's oppinons on Chinese food restaurants has everything to do with if they fix your favorite meal the way you like it fixed. If they do, you love it. If they don't, you're not impressed. The worst thing I could say about Chinese Happiness is that very rarely, we have had to wait for boxes and out check...and that's only because they were so busy. LOVE this place!

I don't care what the supposed critics say about this place.. this food is, well it's comfort chinese food! You get plenty of it! You get fresh crunchy veggies.. the price is right. They pay attention to your: hold the MSG please and no chicken and make it spicy.. PLUS, PLUS, they must be doing something right because you can count on there being folks waiting for their to go food, and the phone is always ringing off the hook while you wait. They've been here forever.. I love comfort chinese food now and then. It gives me great happiness.

Chinese Happiness has been around for a long time. At dinner, the dining room is always full, with a crowd waiting around the counter for take-out. This is just-in-time food delivery, because they couldn't possibly store enough ingredients in the building to produce the volume of food they deliver for more than a single day. As a result, the food is always fresh and the portions are huge. This isn't gourmet food by a long shot, but it's great take-out to watch a movie with.

Ate there last evening! Very reasonable and good sized portions. If you have been to China Town in San Francisco or Honolulu in the 1950's to the 1960's, it is truly nostalgic!!! This is old style Chinese food! Vegetarians will find enough to eat here!

  • Clarkitty C.

Old style "American Chinese" food does not ALWAYS have to be greasy, flavorless, and burnt. If you are looking for reasonably priced higher end chinese food check out Mandarin Cove in downtown on Columbia St. I have had better at a variety of other chinese food joints. Yes you get a large quantity of food for a small penny. But there isnt much flavor going on here and that is a bummer. I make chinese food at home all the time for about the same price as I am paying here, yet it is better quality and with tons more flavor. Sometimes a guy just wants to not have to cook after a long day at work. They were friendly and the service was good, the restaurant was a Denny's style atmosphere, but all in all I would not come back. I teetered on giving them a 3 star but the food was not good so I think that is what people want to know about.

Addictive BBQ Pork Lo Mein, and General Tso's! Considering this is Gresham, I'm tempted to give this 5 stars, just because of Gresham's sub-par selection. All in all, I'm not a huge fan of Chinese food because it's usually pretty plain. But when you don't want to spend a fortune, and want to have left-overs for lunch, it's a great option. Especially here, the portions are SO huge, you'll get a lot of bang for the buck. And I, am ALL about the bang! So when the urge hits me to go out to eat, it often pushes me here, where the food is a bit more special tasting than other chinese; the service is fabulous, plates are piled high, and you leave with 3 pounds of left-overs, for under $20 for 2 people. I'm always TEMPTED to try something new, but... I can never stray far from my favorites, so the most I'll do is order an extra entree, for extra left-overs. We always get the BBQ Pork Lo Mein (Chili-Garlic sauce added and cooked in), and the General Tso's Chicken. They are fabulous, and beat other places that I've tried hands down. We also usually get the crab puffs, or BBQ pork appetizer, unless we're getting an extra entree. The mongolian beef is also good. I have a thing for ordering the sweet and sour chicken with the sauce on the side, so I can mix the sauce up with a bunch of hot mustard- not enough chances to use that stuff. I have to say, all the times I've been I haven't tried much more than that, because, the Lo Mein is so good, I'll eat it for lunch AND dinner the next day, and still be a bit sad that it's gone. It has a very addictive flavor, lots of veggies and meat, and the noodles are the perfect thickness and consistency. Some places I get the lo-mein and they use spaghetti noodles. Heresy! Anyway, give this place a try, and if you try something not perfect, remember that every place has their specialties. And if you live in Gresham, you know you don't have a lot of choices, so give it a shot! I personally, always leave this place happy as a clam, so their name suits them. =)

I used to live in Gresham and we had lunch on a regular basis at this restaurant. When we visit Gresham now we make it a practice to stop for lunch or dinner. Their sweet and sour spareribs are out of this world. Try the Happy Family combination if you are looking for something special. The owners have been the same for over 20 years and they are wonderful people.

This place is a Gresham classic (and therefore, must be included in my Classic 'Sham list). I've been eating combo plates from Chinese happiness on and off for the last 20 years. It always tastes the same to be... good, solid Chinese-American fare. The combos are reasonably priced and you get a ton of food. I've always gone with something like Sweet and Sour Chicken/Almond Chicken Chowmein (subgum?)/BBQ Pork Fried Rice with a cup of Egg Flower soup. You won't be able to finish it. When I was in high school and had mono, I lived on their BBQ Pork Fried Rice while my throat was out of commission. And for that, Chinese Happiness will always have a place in my heart. Not to mention that the owners are very friendly. Lee's Garden will always be my gold standard for Chinese-American cuisine, but you could do a lot worse than Chinese Happiness.

Every time I've driven by this place in the evening it's been packed, I assumed that was a good sign. Finally decided to try some take out last week.. The menu was pretty typical. Nothing popped out at me, screaming "try me". One of the cooks was sitting at a table in the dining room shucking peas. I appreciate the fact that he was shucking fresh peas, but found it odd that he was doing it on the bare dining room table in public view. Hopefully the table and his hands were clean. My kung pao chicken had the little hot symbol next to it on the menu, it was not needed. The lack of heat just showcased the bland flavor. The fried shrimp was soooo shrimpy smelling that my car was filled with funky shrimp fumes the whole ride home. On top of that , they were not deveined, which is crucial in my book. The fried rice needed salt badly. Cashew chicken was the same sludge you can get anywhere. I guess a packed house doesn't always mean quality food. The food was just too boring.

I love this place. It's not the ultimate fine dining experience, but it is delicious chinese comfort food. The service is good, they are very friendly, and the atmosphere is casual and comfortable.

You ever get in the mood for bad Chinese food? I am serious. You know, after work you are tired and just want to fill your stomach wih something, almost anything. Chinese Happiness is the place for you. They serve what I call 'Rotgut Chinese', named after the cheaply made, unwholesome booze. Expect BBQ pork smothered in Red No. 5 dye, fried shrimp fried till they are translucent and sweet and sour sauce that glows like red neon. I just love the idea of a place that has a small pyrmaid of five gallon buckets of soy sauce. Mmmmmm. Come on you know you want it. I go about every six months and when my system recovers, I go again. If you eat in the portions are huge. Eat it fast before it starts coming out the other end. Four ironic stars.

I went to there 3times. First, I ate lunch set with friend. The portion was so great, taste was not bad. But, it was not impressive. Second time, I want to there with church group. It was so amazing. The taste was good. All dishes so tasty , it was totally different with ready-made lunch menu. The happy family is still impressive in Gresham!! The third time, I made order to go some dish and chicken chow mein for my husband. I just let him know the great flavor, then I found some sticky melting scotch tape piece on almost top of the container. Then, I never come back there.

I have been going to this place since I was 17. I enjoy the food, great prices and large portions. I can't say that enough: I enjoy the food. They are always packed at night with loyal customers. My faves are : pork fried rice, barbecue pork, Mongolian beef. That said, the restaurant hasn't been updated since the 80's. The ladies' bathroom is dreadful; small, cramped, always dirty (toilet paper stuck to the ceiling), and only a single light bulb which is plugged into the electrical socket on the wall. As for the staff, some are very friendly and always smiling, a couple of them are not friendly at all. But, the quality of food always draws me back.

This place Is not Chinese Happiness it is Tiffany's Happiness! Love Love Love the egg flower soup and the oolong tea!! The Sample appetizer platter is really good The beef and broccoli is great O heck it is all pretty darn good! I have not lived there for 4 years yet every time i go back in there they remember me and my allergy to sesame seeds :) that is awesome to me! I am not a big fan of the NW style Chinese food but this place is good!

Grew up eating at Chinese restaurants (mom worked at one in Grants Pass for 30yrs) and this one is the worst! No flavor, under cooked, watery noodles.

I've been trying to find a decent chinese restaurant in the Portland area, and so far I have not found a single place that has been good. This being said, my mom and I decided to look at the reviews on this site and others, and many people give great reviews about this place, and to be honest it had to of been the worst food I've ever eaten. The only reason why I'm giving this location One (1) star is because this site requires me to select a star rating for it. What made this place even worse was the fact that I had just undergone my first day of chemotherapy, and my doctor was like eat what you are craving.... TERRIBLE Idea!! Either way, I won't be coming back.

Sorry but this place has horrific food! My husband and I are used to great food back home. We've tried countless of restaurants and thought to give happy Chinese a try. It was clean! I give it that. The staff was very friendly! Always nice. Awesome price for the portion! Yay. Happy to see all the delicious food on the table, we took a bite. Bland, mushy, soggy, cold, and not the right textures you would expect from your favorite Chinese food. It tasted as if everything was made super cheap and in the microwave. The sweet and sour sauce was bright red, but tasted like nothing! How can a bright red sweet and sour sauce taste like nothing? No sour, no sweet just nothing. We asked for togo contaners. The waiter packed it up for us, and we headed for wendy's drive through. This was our first and last time eating here. I want to take a trip to California just to get some decent Chinese and Mexican food. On the flip side I have become a big fan of Thai and Vietnamese food here in Oregon. It seems it's the only place I can get great tasting food.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
