    Hand written menus, that change all the time as far as I can tell. Interesting offerings the night we were there. Several fish dishes, I had the Salmon, others in the party had the Halibut. One of our members chose a nice salad and our hostess had the Pork Shoulder Enchiladas. Bountiful bread and butter. The bread was fresh, and the butter was NOT hard! (Don't you hate it when they refrigerate the butter!) Super presentations on all the meals and the portions were very big for a French restaurant. (At least any I've ever dined at.) Mine was cooked just right for my taste, but I tend to like my fish cooked on the well side and it was. The mushroom sauce was delightful and it did not overwhelm the fish. (and it was not drowning in sauce.) All of our party enjoyed there entries and salad. We all enjoyed coffee and desert. I had the Flan, it was not remarkable, but then is Flan EVER really remarkable? The other desserts were not too exciting either. So that was the only real down side to the meal. The coffee was fresh and a nice dark roast. They had both regular and decaf ready but not old. We arrived at 7pm. The atmosphere was nice but small. Somewhat "kitch" but not overdone. The evening meal seemed well attended but there was an open table or two. We had made reservations. We felt in no hurry to leave, and lingered and enjoyed our seemingly endless and prompt coffee refills.

    This is my wife and I's now favorite "Date place" for going out without the kiddies. The menu changes every month, with that in mind I had the Chicken Schnitzel and my wife had the Halibut in Plum Sauce Curry. Whoa! Presentation was amazing and the Scnitzel was how I make it. Had a bite of the wife's Halibut and it was very tasty and both meals cooked to perfection. This place is not cheap, but in the end you get what you pay for and that is well presented food and very well prepared food at that. Don't let the parking fool you as there are other businesses around there and one may be lead to think the place is packed, but check inside first. Service was great and friendly and we can't wait to go back.

    First time here and we have found our place! Hand written menu adds to the unique flavor of this place! Quaint outside seating available and the service was great also. Had the plum curry halibut and a Cosmo which was as good as the food. We will be making this a regular place to enjoy a meal.

    Absolutely amazing food. The presentation is a sight to behold. Very artistic and colorful. The food was sheer perfection. I had the steamer clams unfortunately, they ran out of bread. I would have loved to dip some in the clam liquid. I had the filet mignon. Cooked beautifully medium rare. My partner order the gnocchi. Soft pillows of potato. Also ordered the Weiner schnitzel. Succulent and tender. If you want a five star meal come and eat here. You will not be disappointed.

    I have nothing but great things to say about this spot! With the menu changing every week it's hard to review a restaurant but they have delicious fresh food. Tonight my razor clams were done to perfection with a perfect sauce! My husband got the sashimi and it was also seared to perfection with a great sauce as well. I got the Tangerine Scallops and they were very fresh and cooked to the perfect texture. We had two girls waiting on us and they were both helpful with explaining the menu and nice as well. Will definitely be back to try more of his menu!

    The food was incredible for sure! We were pretty shocked about the Seattle prices, and the drive-thru pick up. Yes I was informed beforehand there's no linen napkins and the silverware is normal restaurant ware. We had three entrees, one glass iced tea, the tab was $90. It was amazing gourmet, the presentation is like no other, and I'm sure the cooks cut the food on the spot. Just beware before you go that the plates are $25-$35, everything is ala carte, except for water. I'm just thinking because of the location the overhead probably isn't like downtown, so why the really high prices?

    This was our first time here. I loved the patio and loved the European feel with the handwritten menus. I ordered the filet and my husband got the salmon. I let the waitress know I had a severe gluten allergy and she seemed very accommodating. I got my food and there was a fried tomato on my plate, which wasn't in the description. They didn't offer to make me a new plate and just told me not to eat it. Luckily it was on the edge of my plate because I really hate being THAT person. The portions were huge, which can be a good and bad thing. My meat was good, but nothing super memorable. The salmon, however was amazing! I would go back to have fish! Tender, flaky, flavorful, and fresh. I do have one observation: they really like to decorate their plates with fruit of all kinds, and it doesn't always make sense to do so. Having watermelon and cherries on a meat dish really didn't do much for me taste wise or presentation wise. I do plan on going back for another try! Most likely for the fish!

    "We've been doing this for twenty-one years, and we're tired. We just don't want to do it anymore." Quote from hostess as she saw us out. Wow. I have celiac and was recommended this restaurant by a local host (we're in from Chicago). My husband and I walked there, arriving about 7:45 pm on a Saturday, the sun still shining. I was so excited after reading the website and seeing that each meal is prepared personally -- traveling with allergies it's usually cook your own food or go hungry. They seated the people ahead of us, but then the chef yelled out from the back that he was "done! Not taking anymore! Didn't want to be there 'til 10!" ?? The hostess apologized and saw us out, even after I explained I can't eat anywhere else. I actually cried walking back, feeling so defeated. Just incredibly rude. If you're tired of being in the restaurant business and serving dinner, then close.

    We had a big table and every single person loved their food (like 9 people). They absolutely thought the food was amazing; my dish was fabulous but had one fundamental flaw. The rabbit lacked freshness. But it had this creamy shallot sauce that took me to another world!! So good! Two ladies waited on us. There was a handsome, flaxen haired, mature woman who waited on us and was charming as hell. Very young, also fair haired, other waitress was a bit liberal with her manners. Cringe. The food is cooked with incredible expertise, small flaws aside. There are some vagaries in service but all together totally worth it! Can't wait to go back!

    I've been here a handful of times and have always had an amazing experience: fresh, expertly-prepared food, amazing service and very nice ambiance. The menu is ever-changing, seasonal and quite indulgent at times; some of the highlights were the gnocchi, scallops and salmon dishes - they often (if not always) have some gnocchi dish and the sauces are incredible. The seafood has been so well-cooked every time - and my boyfriend is very finicky about his seafood. The owner's wife was very gracious and recommended great wine pairings with our entrees. This is a favorite of ours for date night although I know they do a carry-out business as well so I might have to keep that in mind for our next stay-at-home date night!

    What a great find via Yelp! Daughters have been going to school here over the course of 6 years and had never heard of it. The filet mignon was cooked to perfection. The chinook salmon melted in your mouth. The servers were ridiculously nice, helpful and efficient. Quaint little setting. Oh and the portion size of everything was nothing I've seen in a long time. Clearly a good value as well. Would definitely and will go back. Unfortunately our last year...graduation right around the corner!!!

    This is possibly the worst place to eat in this great little town. The food was drenched and the flavors didn't mix well. The plate was covered in way to many garnishes. If you need a natural "diuretic" this is the spot!! The chef is lazy and has very little skills in the kitchen. We were rushed to pay our bill by 9 on a Friday night!! The waitress had to interrupt our meal. Huge waste if $$$ it's to bad, the place is cute and quant, but lacking in every other department. Will never return!!

    Bon Eating, indeed. Bravo Chef Bruno for creating your own place, a chef's kitchen, where you decide the menu, the quality of the ingredients and the presentation without the opinions of middle hotel management bean counter. Last night was by far the best meal I have ever been served in Eugene, Oregon... For those that have commented on the vocals you hear coming from the kitchen, know this... A successful chef is like football team,but he is the owner, coach, offensive and defensive coordinator, and the quarterback. He has more passion and respect for what he is doing than most other professions out there. He is solely responsible for the end product and your enjoyment. Frankly I love to hear a Chef being vocal. It means has a keen eye on his staff and what they are doing as well as what he is trying to present to his customers. If you ever have a "bad" meal here, I bet it will be the best tasting bad meal you have ever had. \_/ Cheers to the Chef.

    This is my favorite restaurant in eugene! The food is excellent, we're never disappointed! It's a small, quirky restaurant and very friendly. They do close a little earlier than most places around, but I don't mind because the food is so great. We come here everytime we want a nice meal!

    I had a wonderful birthday experience here at Bruno's. There is nothing terrible to report. So why only 4 stars?? Well, some of the same things others have said... ~ It is a bit pricey. And I don't mind pricey. There just wasn't other less expensive choices. ~ My fish was covered in sauce. I LOVE sauce! but didn't really get the flavor of the fish because of the sauce. ~ They don't break down the wine cost if you buy a bottle..? $8 a glass/ $32 a bottle. $6 a glass/ $24 a bottle. * The service was PERFECT! The atmosphere was sweet. The food was Delicious. All of that far out-weighs the few negative things I had to say.

    Two stars, because it's too inconsistent, and too pricey. IF you happen to hit Bruno on a good night, you'll have one of the best food experiences in town. Trouble is, who knows what night that is... We really don't have a lot of 'great' places to eat in Eugene, so I'd really like to give Chef's Kitchen a better review - because it can be good - but at best it's a 50/50 chance as to whether or not you get good food. For the prices Chef's Kitchen charges ($28-$33), the food should be good EVERY time - period. In addition, should you happen on Bruno's on a 'good night' and do get good food, chances are your going to get just so-so service. If Bessie (Bruno's wife) isn't working that night - forget about it! At best, your going to get service that is equivalent to to a pizza parlor - and the age of the wait staff will be the same too. IMHO, there are better places in town to spend your money (Marche, Soriah's).

    My husband and I are in town visiting our aunt and uncle and they decided to take us to their favorite restaurant. I now see why they love this place so much. We were treated to the most amazing meal I have had. We decided to go there very last minute and arrived at 8:20. As we pulled in, our aunt waved to chef Bruno, who was outside with a cigar obviously winding down for the night. I was concerned that we were too late and were going to be a bother but everyone was so gracious and accommodating. The food was exquisite. I had the weeping tigers, our aunt had the curry halibut (which I will certainly get next time!), our uncle had the chicken cacciatore and my husband had the scallops and sole. We all tasted everything and it was all amazing. On our way out, I stopped to give my thanks. Betsy, the chefs wife, was so sweet and loved our appreciation. It turns out they only stayed open for us because they know our aunt and uncle are regulars. I thought that was so sweet. And you never once would've known if we were actually being a bother! I had a great experience and we will definitely be back for our anniversary. Which is really saying something because we live in Salem!

    Totally good - but really, $85 for two entrees and two apps, no drinks! + tip over $100. My hamachi was over cooked at $30 - I want creamy sublime perfection. Won't be going back unless someone else is paying. Our waitress was adorable.

    stopped in thanksgiving weekend for a family dinner. food is still as good as ever - i had amazing baby back ribs and crab spring rolls. they've given the place a fresh coat of paint since i was last here and i was a bit disappointed to see that coat applied to the bathrooms as well. the new look is awesome but i will miss the pink paint and pin-up girls. also- this is still the best steak in eugene, and the only one worth $30.

    Bruno's is great. One of the most enjoyable things about Chef's Kitchen is the fact that the menu changes weekly but is inherently familiar. You can peruse online and decide whether that week appeals to you or not. The ingredients are fresh and well prepared. The dishes are exciting and the sauces that come out of the kitchen really help to enhance, not mask, the natural flavors of their dishes. Bruno's is one place, that if you live in Eugene, you have to visit. It is small and sometimes diners will feel crowded.

    Bruno's Chef Kitchen is a unique style restaurant. Chef Bruno brings a fond love for food from different regions of the world straight to Eugene's dining community. His passion for food comes from what was passed down from his father and his own travels around the world, from European to Asian influences. The food at Chef's Kitchen is fresh and made to order. Bruno's sauces are his own recipes and not something out of a can or jar. His sauces are what make his dishes from average everyday entrees to delightful meals that bring out the flavors of the ingredients. The restaurant is tucked away behind a convenience store and can be easily missed. In a strange sort of way you wouldn't ever figure the place to be restaurant when you arrive. Small, quaint, almost like walking into someones house and watching them cook for you. The menu changes weekly, as mentioned all dishes are made to order, desserts are homemade as well. A small selection of Wine & Beer is available. I found the food to be very freshly made, using local ingredients. Cooked to order and full of flavors that help bring out the "star" ingredient's flavors. While the meal is quite enjoyable, portions very well sized I did find something rather "rough" about the dishes. Some of the presentation seemed a little too cluttered and in the way of the overall dish. Some of the vegetables weren't cut well enough leaving some rather larger pieces in the meal. This is more or less and observation and not a huge mark against them. I can sense that Chef Bruno is looking for his customers to enjoy the meal, the flavors, textures, etc. Quality, quantity are important to him while the presentation seems to be a bit of an after thought. I did enjoy my meal at Chef's Kitchen, it had been a few years since I have gone to eaten there and my initial thoughts back then were a little lower than currently. Chef Bruno is a huge foodie and it shows in his cooking. He wants to share his love and passion for food with his diners and give them meals full of flavor, made with quality and abundance. Though I did wish there was more refinement and simplicity to his meals which would help elevate it to the next level like some of my favorite restaurants in town. Chef's Kitchen's uniqueness does set it apart for all other places in town and is one that should not be missed! I do wish there was a way to make this a 3 1/2 star rating.

    Chef's Kitchen offers a very creative and fresh taste on food. I had the best scallops I ever tasted in my life. They were seared perfectly in this amazing truffle sauce. My husband had some chinook salmon dish with dungeness crab, all made with ultra fresh ingredients. Dessert choices were extensive, all done in house, and the tiara misu, so often a disappointing drowned caklet at most places, was lifted to it's rightful place at Bruno's with fresh whipped cream, not soggy cakes and hazelnuts. It's expensive, more than I ever like to spend when I go out, but the ingredients on the menu are first rate and fancy. It's a place to go out to celebrate something special. Some decent silverware (theirs is bottom of the barrel) and plates would have made the experience better. And would it kill them to offer some bread with dinner? I only complain like this because the prices are high (at least $25 an entree) and that seems to me like a bare minimum if you expect people to cough up so much of their pay. Parent's Note: No high chairs at all, so you must bring your own. There are only a few tables that support a clip on so go early. They have some kind of treasure box of choking hazards they will offer to your baby - if you look through it carefully you'll find a cute book or some crayons. A nice thought but still bring your own entertainment for your little one. There's not much to look at besides the dayglo green walls and smattering of art.

    Call this place the House of Mismanaged Expectations. I have no idea what restaurant those who gave five stars went to, especially when they rave about the food. We were warned that it was expensive, especially for Eugene, but that didn't prepare us for the office-surplus chairs with ripped upholstery and the wobbly tables. The waitress had the temerity to tell us that the salad served two, when it barely served one. I told the hostess (apparently also the co-owner) how much I liked the wine, and she blithely replied, "Oh, that's too bad because we're taking it off the menu." I ordered the Wiener Schnitzel and got a massive serving ... because the kitchen hadn't trimmed the gristle from the meat. I'd take one bite of delicious, tender chicken, and then another one that crunched and had to be spit out. Please don't bother. It's not worth the drive to find it, and it's not worth the prices.

    The food was good, the service was good. Overall, this place is pretty darn good. However, the prices were just too much. I can understand expensive restaurants, but this place didn't seem worth the price. I got a buffalo burger and it was $18.00!! HOLY smokes! Granted, the burger was good, but definitely not worth 18 bones. I don't know, perhaps, I'm too cheap? I'm torn because the buffalo burger came with delicious mac and cheese. But still, not worth all that! Come here if you want to impress a date, but make sure to check the menu first on their website. They have a weekly, monthly, seasonal? menu, so make sure there's something on there you like before you go. I don't know if I'd ever come back again other than to impress a date. Bruno's is not too pretentious and not too homemadeish. It's that nice in-between place that's perfect to bring someone especially since not many people know about this place.

    Update: Wow, back again for another stunningly good meal. This is our favorite restaurant in Eugene-came here for my birthday dinner. It offers an intimate experience with off-the charts service and wonderful food. Tom, the owner/chef, really knows his way around fish and mushrooms and the sauces are el supremo. The salmon was (once again) fabulous and my lamb dish with artichoke bottoms was magnificent. Our waitress was wonderful and very attentive- committed to delivering an ooh-la-la experience. Bessie, the co-owner, is delightful ensuring have the experience of being in a small neighborhood cafe that's living large. We'll be back! From a previous visit: Had a spectacular dinner here on Friday night. Salmon with a superb mushroom cream sauce (for me on the side) and small dollop of crab meat. It was fabulous with the salmon perfectly prepared. Beautifully presented. Shared a medley of wild Oregon mushrooms to open. This was the best meal I've had in some time. The ambiance is delightful if a bit quirky. It's not for the faint of wallet (pretty high end for Eugene) although there are many affordable entrees and it absolutely delivers an ooh-la-la experience for special occasions.

    Food: delicious. If it was the food alone it would be 4/5 stars. I had the Haleakala Chicken with Mac-n-zola. The macaroni was baked with gorgonzola and it was the best macaroni I have ever had. The chicken was less good but still enjoyable. It was a stir fry of sauteed chicken with onions and bell peppers. This sauce was interesting and slightly spicy. To me this didn't necessarily pair well with the macaroni, but I didn't really care. My dad had this same dish My mom had the plum curried halibut and she said it was the best fish dish she had ever had So despite the delicious food, I still gave this place 2 stars. Why? Their prices are very expensive, especially for Eugene standards (many of their dishes are high $20s- $30+ dollars, although my chicken dish was $17.95.) We had a salad that was just some greens with peppers and while it served two it was $8 for something not so impressive. The atmosphere inside just didn't live up to those prices. It felt like a very casual restaurant from the service to the tableware to the uncomfortable chairs I found it especially strange that our meal did not even come with bread. It was an extra fee (maybe $3?) for just plain sourdough. For a place that expensive I thought they could at least include the bread. So I will not return, despite the excellent food, if I'm eating dinner at "special occasion" prices, I'd like to feel like I am somewhere special.

    I'm not quite sure what I was expecting but I pictured dinner at Chef's Kitchen a little differently in my head. The food was good but not amazing, the plated presentation was playfully delightful, the ambiance quaint and unpretentious, the service aloof but helpful and pleasant. So what didn't click? Maybe the high prices between 23-45 with most landing near or at 29. Maybe the early kitchen closing at 8:15. It's hard to say what it was, but my experience was completely different then my wife sitting across from me who absolutely loved it. **The food photos that other Yelpers took are spot on. We had the salmon dinner and the halibut and it looked almost exactly like the pictures, playful, bright and large portions.

    The vibe is very casual. The place is very cozy maybe seating for 25-30 inside, and nice outdoor patio seating for summertime. When it comes to the food.... Omg. Hands down the best filet mignon in Eugene, actually comes w liver pate. The ahi appetizer is great. Big salads to share. Always a couple veggie dishes on the menu. The menu is hand written check it out on there website. A must try!

    After reading some of the rave reviews, and because we live nearby, we decided to try out this restaurant the other night. First, we were disappointed that we weren't served bread at the beginning as some of the neighboring tables were, only to find out later that bread was an extra $3.50 charge. The salad we ordered (for $7.00!) consisted of a few, admittedly very fresh, greens and a nice vinaigrette, but was extremely skimpy for the price. I moved on and had an appetizer of artichoke bottoms stuffed with a chili-chorizo mixture and topped with manchego cheese, which was tasty and spicy enough, but the artichoke was completely overwhelmed by the stuffing. I chose my entree, halibut with a curry sauce and plum chutney, because it had been featured on a Register Guard article in August. The fish was perfectly cooked, but the curry sauce lacked much flavor and could have been improved by use of, for example, a fish reduction for the base. And the plum chutney, although flavorful, did not seem to complement the rest of the dish very well. My wife had veal scallopini, which were OK but not the best she had eaten. Finally, we topped all this off by sharing a tiramisu dessert, which was fairly ordinary and consisted mostly of a whipped cream mixture without a great deal of other textural notes. This meal cost us upwards of $100 with tip (excluding wine). This is an extremely hefty price for a so-so meal. To top things off, we asked the waitress where the veal came from, as we have had difficulties finding veal to purchase in the Eugene area. She asked the chef, but he was unwiiling to reveal his source other than to say that it was "local". That was a little strange, as it wasn't like we were asking for a recipe! Perhaps he thought that by keeping the source a secret, we would have to come back to his restaurant to have veal again. Aside from the salad, the food portions were generous, but in our experience one can get much better and more interesting food for the same, or a cheaper, price at places like Marche and Belly in Eugene, with a much more pleasant ambiance. It's unlikely that we will return here unless something on the menu, which is posted weekly online, really catches our fancy.

    I finally wandered in several months ago and have been back three times since, and at the risk of parroting other reviews, I'll say this about Bruno's and Chef Bruno himself: It's all about the food. Eating at Bruno's is much like eating at my house: You will eat well. I will spare no expense and cut no corners to give you an unrivaled meal, and I will bring decades of culinary experience, education, and international exposure to the table. Each course will be outstanding in content, composition, preparation, and presentation...at least, that's what it said in this month's Bon Appetit, from which I probably culled all the recipes! (Just kidding; I don't subscribe and I rarely use recipes except when baking.) I work my ass off to serve a top-quality meal to people I love, and I only invite people I love to dinner. Of course, there will be no haughty waiter, and you might find that the menu, however exquisite, isn't quite what you're in the mood for that particular evening. The ambiance is limited - if you want wow, you would do best to bypass my dining room and step directly into my kitchen - and the exclusivity factor is nil, as only my family and closest friends will ever see you there. It's just food...ridiculous, occasionally spectacular, maybe even you-ought-to-be-on-Food-Network food, but still, just food. So it is with Bruno's. Chef Bruno is gifted, experienced, well-educated, and most of all, he loves food. Loves. Really. He serves the best restaurant meal in town, hands down. Still, there are glaring faults. Bruno is a man after my own heart, which means that all his expertise, all his talent, all his love is focused on the back of the house. Everything from the decor to the waitstaff to the humble building itself is completely and totally ordinary. This is excusable when you're eating at my house - not so when you are eating at a restaurant. If you're looking for good eats, you can't do better in Eugene, and offhand I don't know anyplace better in Portland either...but if you are looking for a nice meal in a nice place, you will be 50% disappointed. Still, the potential and the genius of Chef Bruno are undeniable. He ought to open a real restaurant and grab that fifth star. For now, you'll have to be satisfied with eating at some chef's kitchen. My guess is you will be.

    I called Bruno's at about 8:20pm. Me: Hello. Bessie: Hi. Hold on. /random yelling at kitchen. a few moments pass and it's quiet. Me: Hello? Bessie: O hai! Are you still there? Me: Yup, we'd like to come in for dinner. We're only in town for one night so if there's a way to sneak us in, we'd love to come. Bessie: Hold on one sec. /Bessie yells to Bruno who yells back that he wants to close. I beg and plead a bit more. Bessie: Can you get here in under 10 minutes? Me (having no idea where here is): Absolutely. We'll rush. Bessie: Don't rush. Drive safely but get here soon. Me: Ok. See you shortly. /we get there in 9 minutes and sit down to one of the best meals i've eaten in a long time. unpretentious bruno's totally held its own against some of the more uppity foodie places in sf.

    I ate here a few weeks ago with five friends. It was one of the best dining experiences I have had in a long time. Every thing we got was amazing. We started with a bunch of appetizers, my favorite being the gnocchi. The one bummer is that some of the plates were sold out by the time we got here. But all was OK because there was a variety to choose from and most of us all got something different so we could trade bites. I got a prawn risotto that was unlike anything I have ever had. Every bite was so good and usuallty when they say prawns you get a few shrimp, not here they were prawns and there were a lot of them. I would have to say my favorite meal was the duck and pear saki it wa devine. If you are ever in Eugene this place is a hidden treasure. Chef Bruno uses the finest and fresh ingredients and the wine is not that expensive.

    Bon Eating, indeed. Bravo Chef Bruno for creating your own place, a chef's kitchen, where you decide the menu, the quality of the ingredients and the presentation without the opinions of middle hotel management bean counter. Last night was by far the best meal I have ever been served in Eugene, Oregon... For those that have commented on the vocals you hear coming from the kitchen, know this... A successful chef is like football team,but he is the owner, coach, offensive and defensive coordinator, and the quarterback. He has more passion and respect for what he is doing than most other professions out there. He is solely responsible for the end product and your enjoyment. Frankly I love to hear a Chef being vocal. It means has a keen eye on his staff and what they are doing as well as what he is trying to present to his customers. If you ever have a "bad" meal here, I bet it will be the best tasting bad meal you have ever had. \_/ Cheers to the Chef.

    I had a wonderful birthday experience here at Bruno's. There is nothing terrible to report. So why only 4 stars?? Well, some of the same things others have said... ~ It is a bit pricey. And I don't mind pricey. There just wasn't other less expensive choices. ~ My fish was covered in sauce. I LOVE sauce! but didn't really get the flavor of the fish because of the sauce. ~ They don't break down the wine cost if you buy a bottle..? $8 a glass/ $32 a bottle. $6 a glass/ $24 a bottle. * The service was PERFECT! The atmosphere was sweet. The food was Delicious. All of that far out-weighs the few negative things I had to say.

    Two stars, because it's too inconsistent, and too pricey. IF you happen to hit Bruno on a good night, you'll have one of the best food experiences in town. Trouble is, who knows what night that is... We really don't have a lot of 'great' places to eat in Eugene, so I'd really like to give Chef's Kitchen a better review - because it can be good - but at best it's a 50/50 chance as to whether or not you get good food. For the prices Chef's Kitchen charges ($28-$33), the food should be good EVERY time - period. In addition, should you happen on Bruno's on a 'good night' and do get good food, chances are your going to get just so-so service. If Bessie (Bruno's wife) isn't working that night - forget about it! At best, your going to get service that is equivalent to to a pizza parlor - and the age of the wait staff will be the same too. IMHO, there are better places in town to spend your money (Marche, Soriah's).

    Hand written menus, that change all the time as far as I can tell. Interesting offerings the night we were there. Several fish dishes, I had the Salmon, others in the party had the Halibut. One of our members chose a nice salad and our hostess had the Pork Shoulder Enchiladas. Bountiful bread and butter. The bread was fresh, and the butter was NOT hard! (Don't you hate it when they refrigerate the butter!) Super presentations on all the meals and the portions were very big for a French restaurant. (At least any I've ever dined at.) Mine was cooked just right for my taste, but I tend to like my fish cooked on the well side and it was. The mushroom sauce was delightful and it did not overwhelm the fish. (and it was not drowning in sauce.) All of our party enjoyed there entries and salad. We all enjoyed coffee and desert. I had the Flan, it was not remarkable, but then is Flan EVER really remarkable? The other desserts were not too exciting either. So that was the only real down side to the meal. The coffee was fresh and a nice dark roast. They had both regular and decaf ready but not old. We arrived at 7pm. The atmosphere was nice but small. Somewhat "kitch" but not overdone. The evening meal seemed well attended but there was an open table or two. We had made reservations. We felt in no hurry to leave, and lingered and enjoyed our seemingly endless and prompt coffee refills.

    This is my wife and I's now favorite "Date place" for going out without the kiddies. The menu changes every month, with that in mind I had the Chicken Schnitzel and my wife had the Halibut in Plum Sauce Curry. Whoa! Presentation was amazing and the Scnitzel was how I make it. Had a bite of the wife's Halibut and it was very tasty and both meals cooked to perfection. This place is not cheap, but in the end you get what you pay for and that is well presented food and very well prepared food at that. Don't let the parking fool you as there are other businesses around there and one may be lead to think the place is packed, but check inside first. Service was great and friendly and we can't wait to go back.

    First time here and we have found our place! Hand written menu adds to the unique flavor of this place! Quaint outside seating available and the service was great also. Had the plum curry halibut and a Cosmo which was as good as the food. We will be making this a regular place to enjoy a meal.

    Absolutely amazing food. The presentation is a sight to behold. Very artistic and colorful. The food was sheer perfection. I had the steamer clams unfortunately, they ran out of bread. I would have loved to dip some in the clam liquid. I had the filet mignon. Cooked beautifully medium rare. My partner order the gnocchi. Soft pillows of potato. Also ordered the Weiner schnitzel. Succulent and tender. If you want a five star meal come and eat here. You will not be disappointed.

    I have nothing but great things to say about this spot! With the menu changing every week it's hard to review a restaurant but they have delicious fresh food. Tonight my razor clams were done to perfection with a perfect sauce! My husband got the sashimi and it was also seared to perfection with a great sauce as well. I got the Tangerine Scallops and they were very fresh and cooked to the perfect texture. We had two girls waiting on us and they were both helpful with explaining the menu and nice as well. Will definitely be back to try more of his menu!

    The food was incredible for sure! We were pretty shocked about the Seattle prices, and the drive-thru pick up. Yes I was informed beforehand there's no linen napkins and the silverware is normal restaurant ware. We had three entrees, one glass iced tea, the tab was $90. It was amazing gourmet, the presentation is like no other, and I'm sure the cooks cut the food on the spot. Just beware before you go that the plates are $25-$35, everything is ala carte, except for water. I'm just thinking because of the location the overhead probably isn't like downtown, so why the really high prices?

    This was our first time here. I loved the patio and loved the European feel with the handwritten menus. I ordered the filet and my husband got the salmon. I let the waitress know I had a severe gluten allergy and she seemed very accommodating. I got my food and there was a fried tomato on my plate, which wasn't in the description. They didn't offer to make me a new plate and just told me not to eat it. Luckily it was on the edge of my plate because I really hate being THAT person. The portions were huge, which can be a good and bad thing. My meat was good, but nothing super memorable. The salmon, however was amazing! I would go back to have fish! Tender, flaky, flavorful, and fresh. I do have one observation: they really like to decorate their plates with fruit of all kinds, and it doesn't always make sense to do so. Having watermelon and cherries on a meat dish really didn't do much for me taste wise or presentation wise. I do plan on going back for another try! Most likely for the fish!

    "We've been doing this for twenty-one years, and we're tired. We just don't want to do it anymore." Quote from hostess as she saw us out. Wow. I have celiac and was recommended this restaurant by a local host (we're in from Chicago). My husband and I walked there, arriving about 7:45 pm on a Saturday, the sun still shining. I was so excited after reading the website and seeing that each meal is prepared personally -- traveling with allergies it's usually cook your own food or go hungry. They seated the people ahead of us, but then the chef yelled out from the back that he was "done! Not taking anymore! Didn't want to be there 'til 10!" ?? The hostess apologized and saw us out, even after I explained I can't eat anywhere else. I actually cried walking back, feeling so defeated. Just incredibly rude. If you're tired of being in the restaurant business and serving dinner, then close.

    We had a big table and every single person loved their food (like 9 people). They absolutely thought the food was amazing; my dish was fabulous but had one fundamental flaw. The rabbit lacked freshness. But it had this creamy shallot sauce that took me to another world!! So good! Two ladies waited on us. There was a handsome, flaxen haired, mature woman who waited on us and was charming as hell. Very young, also fair haired, other waitress was a bit liberal with her manners. Cringe. The food is cooked with incredible expertise, small flaws aside. There are some vagaries in service but all together totally worth it! Can't wait to go back!

    I've been here a handful of times and have always had an amazing experience: fresh, expertly-prepared food, amazing service and very nice ambiance. The menu is ever-changing, seasonal and quite indulgent at times; some of the highlights were the gnocchi, scallops and salmon dishes - they often (if not always) have some gnocchi dish and the sauces are incredible. The seafood has been so well-cooked every time - and my boyfriend is very finicky about his seafood. The owner's wife was very gracious and recommended great wine pairings with our entrees. This is a favorite of ours for date night although I know they do a carry-out business as well so I might have to keep that in mind for our next stay-at-home date night!

    What a great find via Yelp! Daughters have been going to school here over the course of 6 years and had never heard of it. The filet mignon was cooked to perfection. The chinook salmon melted in your mouth. The servers were ridiculously nice, helpful and efficient. Quaint little setting. Oh and the portion size of everything was nothing I've seen in a long time. Clearly a good value as well. Would definitely and will go back. Unfortunately our last year...graduation right around the corner!!!

    This is possibly the worst place to eat in this great little town. The food was drenched and the flavors didn't mix well. The plate was covered in way to many garnishes. If you need a natural "diuretic" this is the spot!! The chef is lazy and has very little skills in the kitchen. We were rushed to pay our bill by 9 on a Friday night!! The waitress had to interrupt our meal. Huge waste if $$$ it's to bad, the place is cute and quant, but lacking in every other department. Will never return!!

    My husband and I are in town visiting our aunt and uncle and they decided to take us to their favorite restaurant. I now see why they love this place so much. We were treated to the most amazing meal I have had. We decided to go there very last minute and arrived at 8:20. As we pulled in, our aunt waved to chef Bruno, who was outside with a cigar obviously winding down for the night. I was concerned that we were too late and were going to be a bother but everyone was so gracious and accommodating. The food was exquisite. I had the weeping tigers, our aunt had the curry halibut (which I will certainly get next time!), our uncle had the chicken cacciatore and my husband had the scallops and sole. We all tasted everything and it was all amazing. On our way out, I stopped to give my thanks. Betsy, the chefs wife, was so sweet and loved our appreciation. It turns out they only stayed open for us because they know our aunt and uncle are regulars. I thought that was so sweet. And you never once would've known if we were actually being a bother! I had a great experience and we will definitely be back for our anniversary. Which is really saying something because we live in Salem!

    Totally good - but really, $85 for two entrees and two apps, no drinks! + tip over $100. My hamachi was over cooked at $30 - I want creamy sublime perfection. Won't be going back unless someone else is paying. Our waitress was adorable.

    The food was good, the service was good. Overall, this place is pretty darn good. However, the prices were just too much. I can understand expensive restaurants, but this place didn't seem worth the price. I got a buffalo burger and it was $18.00!! HOLY smokes! Granted, the burger was good, but definitely not worth 18 bones. I don't know, perhaps, I'm too cheap? I'm torn because the buffalo burger came with delicious mac and cheese. But still, not worth all that! Come here if you want to impress a date, but make sure to check the menu first on their website. They have a weekly, monthly, seasonal? menu, so make sure there's something on there you like before you go. I don't know if I'd ever come back again other than to impress a date. Bruno's is not too pretentious and not too homemadeish. It's that nice in-between place that's perfect to bring someone especially since not many people know about this place.

    Update: Wow, back again for another stunningly good meal. This is our favorite restaurant in Eugene-came here for my birthday dinner. It offers an intimate experience with off-the charts service and wonderful food. Tom, the owner/chef, really knows his way around fish and mushrooms and the sauces are el supremo. The salmon was (once again) fabulous and my lamb dish with artichoke bottoms was magnificent. Our waitress was wonderful and very attentive- committed to delivering an ooh-la-la experience. Bessie, the co-owner, is delightful ensuring have the experience of being in a small neighborhood cafe that's living large. We'll be back! From a previous visit: Had a spectacular dinner here on Friday night. Salmon with a superb mushroom cream sauce (for me on the side) and small dollop of crab meat. It was fabulous with the salmon perfectly prepared. Beautifully presented. Shared a medley of wild Oregon mushrooms to open. This was the best meal I've had in some time. The ambiance is delightful if a bit quirky. It's not for the faint of wallet (pretty high end for Eugene) although there are many affordable entrees and it absolutely delivers an ooh-la-la experience for special occasions.

    Food: delicious. If it was the food alone it would be 4/5 stars. I had the Haleakala Chicken with Mac-n-zola. The macaroni was baked with gorgonzola and it was the best macaroni I have ever had. The chicken was less good but still enjoyable. It was a stir fry of sauteed chicken with onions and bell peppers. This sauce was interesting and slightly spicy. To me this didn't necessarily pair well with the macaroni, but I didn't really care. My dad had this same dish My mom had the plum curried halibut and she said it was the best fish dish she had ever had So despite the delicious food, I still gave this place 2 stars. Why? Their prices are very expensive, especially for Eugene standards (many of their dishes are high $20s- $30+ dollars, although my chicken dish was $17.95.) We had a salad that was just some greens with peppers and while it served two it was $8 for something not so impressive. The atmosphere inside just didn't live up to those prices. It felt like a very casual restaurant from the service to the tableware to the uncomfortable chairs I found it especially strange that our meal did not even come with bread. It was an extra fee (maybe $3?) for just plain sourdough. For a place that expensive I thought they could at least include the bread. So I will not return, despite the excellent food, if I'm eating dinner at "special occasion" prices, I'd like to feel like I am somewhere special.

    I'm not quite sure what I was expecting but I pictured dinner at Chef's Kitchen a little differently in my head. The food was good but not amazing, the plated presentation was playfully delightful, the ambiance quaint and unpretentious, the service aloof but helpful and pleasant. So what didn't click? Maybe the high prices between 23-45 with most landing near or at 29. Maybe the early kitchen closing at 8:15. It's hard to say what it was, but my experience was completely different then my wife sitting across from me who absolutely loved it. **The food photos that other Yelpers took are spot on. We had the salmon dinner and the halibut and it looked almost exactly like the pictures, playful, bright and large portions.

    Chef's Kitchen offers a very creative and fresh taste on food. I had the best scallops I ever tasted in my life. They were seared perfectly in this amazing truffle sauce. My husband had some chinook salmon dish with dungeness crab, all made with ultra fresh ingredients. Dessert choices were extensive, all done in house, and the tiara misu, so often a disappointing drowned caklet at most places, was lifted to it's rightful place at Bruno's with fresh whipped cream, not soggy cakes and hazelnuts. It's expensive, more than I ever like to spend when I go out, but the ingredients on the menu are first rate and fancy. It's a place to go out to celebrate something special. Some decent silverware (theirs is bottom of the barrel) and plates would have made the experience better. And would it kill them to offer some bread with dinner? I only complain like this because the prices are high (at least $25 an entree) and that seems to me like a bare minimum if you expect people to cough up so much of their pay. Parent's Note: No high chairs at all, so you must bring your own. There are only a few tables that support a clip on so go early. They have some kind of treasure box of choking hazards they will offer to your baby - if you look through it carefully you'll find a cute book or some crayons. A nice thought but still bring your own entertainment for your little one. There's not much to look at besides the dayglo green walls and smattering of art.

    Call this place the House of Mismanaged Expectations. I have no idea what restaurant those who gave five stars went to, especially when they rave about the food. We were warned that it was expensive, especially for Eugene, but that didn't prepare us for the office-surplus chairs with ripped upholstery and the wobbly tables. The waitress had the temerity to tell us that the salad served two, when it barely served one. I told the hostess (apparently also the co-owner) how much I liked the wine, and she blithely replied, "Oh, that's too bad because we're taking it off the menu." I ordered the Wiener Schnitzel and got a massive serving ... because the kitchen hadn't trimmed the gristle from the meat. I'd take one bite of delicious, tender chicken, and then another one that crunched and had to be spit out. Please don't bother. It's not worth the drive to find it, and it's not worth the prices.

    stopped in thanksgiving weekend for a family dinner. food is still as good as ever - i had amazing baby back ribs and crab spring rolls. they've given the place a fresh coat of paint since i was last here and i was a bit disappointed to see that coat applied to the bathrooms as well. the new look is awesome but i will miss the pink paint and pin-up girls. also- this is still the best steak in eugene, and the only one worth $30.

    Bruno's is great. One of the most enjoyable things about Chef's Kitchen is the fact that the menu changes weekly but is inherently familiar. You can peruse online and decide whether that week appeals to you or not. The ingredients are fresh and well prepared. The dishes are exciting and the sauces that come out of the kitchen really help to enhance, not mask, the natural flavors of their dishes. Bruno's is one place, that if you live in Eugene, you have to visit. It is small and sometimes diners will feel crowded.

    Bruno's Chef Kitchen is a unique style restaurant. Chef Bruno brings a fond love for food from different regions of the world straight to Eugene's dining community. His passion for food comes from what was passed down from his father and his own travels around the world, from European to Asian influences. The food at Chef's Kitchen is fresh and made to order. Bruno's sauces are his own recipes and not something out of a can or jar. His sauces are what make his dishes from average everyday entrees to delightful meals that bring out the flavors of the ingredients. The restaurant is tucked away behind a convenience store and can be easily missed. In a strange sort of way you wouldn't ever figure the place to be restaurant when you arrive. Small, quaint, almost like walking into someones house and watching them cook for you. The menu changes weekly, as mentioned all dishes are made to order, desserts are homemade as well. A small selection of Wine & Beer is available. I found the food to be very freshly made, using local ingredients. Cooked to order and full of flavors that help bring out the "star" ingredient's flavors. While the meal is quite enjoyable, portions very well sized I did find something rather "rough" about the dishes. Some of the presentation seemed a little too cluttered and in the way of the overall dish. Some of the vegetables weren't cut well enough leaving some rather larger pieces in the meal. This is more or less and observation and not a huge mark against them. I can sense that Chef Bruno is looking for his customers to enjoy the meal, the flavors, textures, etc. Quality, quantity are important to him while the presentation seems to be a bit of an after thought. I did enjoy my meal at Chef's Kitchen, it had been a few years since I have gone to eaten there and my initial thoughts back then were a little lower than currently. Chef Bruno is a huge foodie and it shows in his cooking. He wants to share his love and passion for food with his diners and give them meals full of flavor, made with quality and abundance. Though I did wish there was more refinement and simplicity to his meals which would help elevate it to the next level like some of my favorite restaurants in town. Chef's Kitchen's uniqueness does set it apart for all other places in town and is one that should not be missed! I do wish there was a way to make this a 3 1/2 star rating.

    The vibe is very casual. The place is very cozy maybe seating for 25-30 inside, and nice outdoor patio seating for summertime. When it comes to the food.... Omg. Hands down the best filet mignon in Eugene, actually comes w liver pate. The ahi appetizer is great. Big salads to share. Always a couple veggie dishes on the menu. The menu is hand written check it out on there website. A must try!

    After reading some of the rave reviews, and because we live nearby, we decided to try out this restaurant the other night. First, we were disappointed that we weren't served bread at the beginning as some of the neighboring tables were, only to find out later that bread was an extra $3.50 charge. The salad we ordered (for $7.00!) consisted of a few, admittedly very fresh, greens and a nice vinaigrette, but was extremely skimpy for the price. I moved on and had an appetizer of artichoke bottoms stuffed with a chili-chorizo mixture and topped with manchego cheese, which was tasty and spicy enough, but the artichoke was completely overwhelmed by the stuffing. I chose my entree, halibut with a curry sauce and plum chutney, because it had been featured on a Register Guard article in August. The fish was perfectly cooked, but the curry sauce lacked much flavor and could have been improved by use of, for example, a fish reduction for the base. And the plum chutney, although flavorful, did not seem to complement the rest of the dish very well. My wife had veal scallopini, which were OK but not the best she had eaten. Finally, we topped all this off by sharing a tiramisu dessert, which was fairly ordinary and consisted mostly of a whipped cream mixture without a great deal of other textural notes. This meal cost us upwards of $100 with tip (excluding wine). This is an extremely hefty price for a so-so meal. To top things off, we asked the waitress where the veal came from, as we have had difficulties finding veal to purchase in the Eugene area. She asked the chef, but he was unwiiling to reveal his source other than to say that it was "local". That was a little strange, as it wasn't like we were asking for a recipe! Perhaps he thought that by keeping the source a secret, we would have to come back to his restaurant to have veal again. Aside from the salad, the food portions were generous, but in our experience one can get much better and more interesting food for the same, or a cheaper, price at places like Marche and Belly in Eugene, with a much more pleasant ambiance. It's unlikely that we will return here unless something on the menu, which is posted weekly online, really catches our fancy.

    I finally wandered in several months ago and have been back three times since, and at the risk of parroting other reviews, I'll say this about Bruno's and Chef Bruno himself: It's all about the food. Eating at Bruno's is much like eating at my house: You will eat well. I will spare no expense and cut no corners to give you an unrivaled meal, and I will bring decades of culinary experience, education, and international exposure to the table. Each course will be outstanding in content, composition, preparation, and presentation...at least, that's what it said in this month's Bon Appetit, from which I probably culled all the recipes! (Just kidding; I don't subscribe and I rarely use recipes except when baking.) I work my ass off to serve a top-quality meal to people I love, and I only invite people I love to dinner. Of course, there will be no haughty waiter, and you might find that the menu, however exquisite, isn't quite what you're in the mood for that particular evening. The ambiance is limited - if you want wow, you would do best to bypass my dining room and step directly into my kitchen - and the exclusivity factor is nil, as only my family and closest friends will ever see you there. It's just food...ridiculous, occasionally spectacular, maybe even you-ought-to-be-on-Food-Network food, but still, just food. So it is with Bruno's. Chef Bruno is gifted, experienced, well-educated, and most of all, he loves food. Loves. Really. He serves the best restaurant meal in town, hands down. Still, there are glaring faults. Bruno is a man after my own heart, which means that all his expertise, all his talent, all his love is focused on the back of the house. Everything from the decor to the waitstaff to the humble building itself is completely and totally ordinary. This is excusable when you're eating at my house - not so when you are eating at a restaurant. If you're looking for good eats, you can't do better in Eugene, and offhand I don't know anyplace better in Portland either...but if you are looking for a nice meal in a nice place, you will be 50% disappointed. Still, the potential and the genius of Chef Bruno are undeniable. He ought to open a real restaurant and grab that fifth star. For now, you'll have to be satisfied with eating at some chef's kitchen. My guess is you will be.

    I called Bruno's at about 8:20pm. Me: Hello. Bessie: Hi. Hold on. /random yelling at kitchen. a few moments pass and it's quiet. Me: Hello? Bessie: O hai! Are you still there? Me: Yup, we'd like to come in for dinner. We're only in town for one night so if there's a way to sneak us in, we'd love to come. Bessie: Hold on one sec. /Bessie yells to Bruno who yells back that he wants to close. I beg and plead a bit more. Bessie: Can you get here in under 10 minutes? Me (having no idea where here is): Absolutely. We'll rush. Bessie: Don't rush. Drive safely but get here soon. Me: Ok. See you shortly. /we get there in 9 minutes and sit down to one of the best meals i've eaten in a long time. unpretentious bruno's totally held its own against some of the more uppity foodie places in sf.

    I ate here a few weeks ago with five friends. It was one of the best dining experiences I have had in a long time. Every thing we got was amazing. We started with a bunch of appetizers, my favorite being the gnocchi. The one bummer is that some of the plates were sold out by the time we got here. But all was OK because there was a variety to choose from and most of us all got something different so we could trade bites. I got a prawn risotto that was unlike anything I have ever had. Every bite was so good and usuallty when they say prawns you get a few shrimp, not here they were prawns and there were a lot of them. I would have to say my favorite meal was the duck and pear saki it wa devine. If you are ever in Eugene this place is a hidden treasure. Chef Bruno uses the finest and fresh ingredients and the wine is not that expensive.
