Lunch buffet isn't bad, but the naan is horribly stale.

Chicken Marsala, koormas, dosas. It's all good, authentic, and fresh. One of our favorites when we're in bend...nice family too, go!

  • Ben L.

Ok everything is cold. No steam at the buffet. Even had a bit of raw tandoori chicken. The naan was good but cold and the rice pudding lacked flavor or temperature - it was lukewarm. The food was mostly good but just too cold, no where near hot holding temps. I saw an employee stick her finger into the food to check the temp. I wish I could leave a quarter star.

This food is amazing. I think the lunch buffet is available every day, and it is delicious every time. I seriously love this place. I was just visiting Bend, but it's just another reason to go back soon.

This is the only Indian place in Bend, thank goodness it's good!!!! The buffet is a bargain, the people are so friendly. It's not busy, so you can get in and out quickly. Try the sag paneer, I think it's their best.

Flavorful and plentiful. Taj Palace offers an excellent vegetarian selection. The food is consistent and quite good. Possibly the best ethnic food in Bend.

  • Todd A.

I do like this place for the buffet lunch with friends. I have only eaten lunch there so can't talk to the rest. The chicken is great and they have enough to select from that everyone will be happy with a couple items. The Nan is good as are the vegitarean options.

  • Josh G.

Wow! Was not even expecting an Indian restaurant in Bend, but so glad this is here. Very surprised at how good and flavorful the food was. We'll definitely return soon.

  • P O.

I went here for the dinner buffet with a friend. It was a little more money than I would usually spend for a meal out- around $15 I think? The food was all fantastic though. I remember the aloo paneer and vegetable curry being particularly delicious. I don't eat meat, but all of the vegetarian options were great. I also saved some room for rice pudding for dessert and was quite pleased. I also loved the set up of the restaurant. There's a really neat raised seating area that was very enjoyable for some strange reason.

This restaurant is pretty good as far as Indian food goes. They have a buffet with a decent selection of food. Their food is relatively mild for Indian food, but it tastes good. I'd recommend this restaurant if you like Indian food.

  • Marques G.

Perhaps the best Indian buffet I've ever had. Very impressive! Very extensive selection of buffet items, including several vegetarian items. The flavor is amazing! We had just been to the #1 rated Indian buffet in Denver, and this one was definitely better. Like another reviewer, I was surprised at how empty the place was. This is a hidden gem. I will definitely be back.

Well lunch was not as good as I would have liked, everything looked delicious but looks can be decieving. I tried the tandoori chicken, which I wish I hadn't it was to tough my husband had some and found RAW chicken which grosses me out severely. I had chicken makhani the flavor was delicious, everything about it was delicious except one thing that my husband pointed out the food was luke warm there was no steam rising from the food, I thought it was just because we were sitting near the door but when you go to get your food there is no steam rising there either, the food was just not hot enough I like my food still piping hot when I sit down. I dont think we will be returning to this establishment, the service was so so, I give a 2 star just for the delicious flavor of my chicken. Yet after what my husband saw, I will definately NOT be back, he saw one of the servers stir the food then stick her bare finger into the food to see how hot it was very, very, very disgusting I wanted to throw up after I heard that.

Oh. Holy. Wow! Onion pakora, with chickpea-coconut and cilantro sauces.. where have you been all my life?!?! This place wowed me with every dish. I was so surprised they were almost empty, even though it was late Monday night. As far as I'm concerned, they should have to be kicking people out.. or open 24 hours. Consider me a new regular.

I am reviewing this on "take out' The food was fantastic! The vindaloo was a bit spicy and the tikka-masala off the hook!!!!

This was a disappointment. We went on a Saturday night and there was hardly anyone there. The staff, when they finally noticed us, had the enthusiasm of a door stopper. Honestly the feeling I got after being in this restaurant for about 10 minutes, was that somebody's dog must have died. It was just miserably depressing. The food was about three stars. We both had Mixed Vegetable Masala. It consisted of what we're 95% sure was mixed frozen vegetables in a bland curry sauce, served with white rice. For the price paid, portions were small and quality was disappointing. To top the evening off, when we were finished eating we spotted a woman that was likely the owner. She was an Indian woman with high self esteem, clad in a traditional sari with a disturbing amount of back fat on display. If we had seen this earlier, we may not have been able to choke down our food. There are far better places to spend your dinner dollars.

Amazing value in the buffet!!! I took my mom there last week and we both came away extremely impressed. They had a huge variety of things there to choose from, and each thing was absolutely delicious. I've actually been here a few times now and each time has been just delicious and truely Indian-tasting. Authentic Indian. There's also Indian music playing in there which I like, and friendly Indian people working there. Exotic atmosphere to go with the exotic flavors. Assertively spiced with good-quality spices, is what it tastes like. All their stuff is bursting with flavor. And their prices are amazing. I hope they stay in business forever.

We were on our way to a completely different restaurant....but when we parked directly in front of the Taj Palace...there was no arguing. We eagerly wanted to try out the 8$ lunch buffet. 80% on the buffet was veggie friendly and we left after completely over-eating for the long drive back to Utah. So delicious! I wish I could frequent this place.....

Came here a few years back and had an amazing meal. We were looking forward to stopping by for dinner again but ended up disappointed. The food was ok, but the service has gone down hill.

We have been eating at Taj Palace since they opened 12 years ago and it always a favorite in Bend. The lunch buffet has me totally spoiled as it is the best of any Indian restaurant I've tried. Vegetarians, Vegans and everyone else will find this place to be mouthfuls of flavor like no other. When in Bend, treat yourself to either the lunch buffet or a menu dinner !

On our Oregon road trip we stopped at Bend for dinner and we had the Thali with vegi biryani. We liked it a lot. Naan and curries were yummy... The Owner was very nice and customer friendly. Thanx a lot for yummy food Taj Palace.

Our favorite in Downtown Bend. Love the food. Love the owners. We need to support ethnic diversity in culinary. This restaurant has been consistently good. It does lack atmosphere, but makes up for it in hometown comfort food.

  • Lucas T.

Really good food, there's nothing fancy about it, it's just straight forward great Indian food. I just wish they served fresh naan.

This is a family owned business in the downtown area of Bend. The food was great as was the service.

  • Jim E.

We were in the fence on coming here since there were not too many folks in the restaurant, but this was definitely one of the better Indian places we have been to in Europe and the States. We had the tikka masala and the mixed tandoori grill. Everything was wonderful.

These folks have it down! Great food that matches the quality of evergreen in Corvallis. Thanks for the laughs and great hospitality. Your restaurant rocks!

Today's official review of the buffet at Taj Palace in Bend For the first time at this establishment I was displeased with the Pink gloopy stuff with the chewy meat substance in it. However, the light-brown stuff with the white thingys floating in it was excellent as was the crunchy yellow things with the green doodads on top. The slithery little yellow things in the reddish soupy stuff was new and wonderful. My favorite though was the congealed, stringy greenish-brown stuff with the tiny little black things in it!! Delicious!! For desert the spongy round balls in the watery, sweet, sticky splooge were terrific. !!!! This is still one of my favorite places!!

  • Randi M.

I love it here. I have usually gone for the buffet, we went on a Friday night and there was no buffet. Totally fine, we'll go with it! Stayed anyway and ordered off the menu. GREAT DECISION! I have always been afraid to order off the menu for fear of not getting the right thing... (Buffet?!) We came in for my 30th birthday with about 10 people. We got our food promptly and it was delicious. If you like indian food. Come here. It's interesting in atmosphere and food fair, a local gem.

I eat gluten free foods and the owner showed me which food was gluten free. The sizzling boti kebab was delicious and I ate it with a rice crepe and raita. Come to this Bend institution! It's been here for years and the food is the reason why.

Love their buffet-- best deal ever. Dinner portions looked small but then were very filling. Around $10-12 an entree. Love all the sauces and chutneys on the buffet-- I think their food is pretty delicious!

I am a girl that absolutely LOVES spicy food. So Ethnic foods tend to be my number one choice. I decided to try Indian food for the first time and I do not regret my decision. I need to get over myself and branch out when it comes to trying the other options they offer. I always get the Paneer Masala. It's like yellow curry with little cubes of goat cheese, vegetables, and mana. If spicy cheese is your thing, try it out! I recommend it. Only thing I would like to see change, is the service. It's not awful, but they could definitely try a little harder to make people feel welcome. Other than that, Taj is the place to eat some good Indian food.

My partner and I stopped here for lunch during a recent road trip and were both impressed and surprised by the quality and assortment of items on their buffet. The food was fresh and presented nicely (hard thing to do at a buffet). The service was prompt, friendly and attentive. The buffet was such a fantastic deal and absolutely delicious.

I have been living in Bend for over a year and can't believe I haven't been here before. The lunch buffet is such a fantastic deal and absolutely delicious. The flavors are great, options are varied and spicey level is legitimate. Definitely going to be a new favorite lunch spot as it is hard to beat!

I'm a major fan of Indian food. I was in India a little over a month ago and was in heaven. So returning to Bend, I was sad that I'd miss the flavors. But I went into Taj Palace for lunch and was blown away. I loved it. It's very authentic and I knew as I was leaving that I will definitely be back, many many times.

Best Indian food in town. Nothing in here is bad! Wonderful restaurant, great staff, incredible food, will be coming back again and again! My wife loved it!

The food was good, not the best Indian food I've had. The Ginger Lamb was tasty and not something you find elsewhere.

Best South Indian food I have had in the USA in the last 20 years! I was in Bend for a conference and got lost looking for my hotel. It wa sthe best thing that ever happened to me since I discovered the Taj Palace :-) Most restaurants that I have had Indian food are North Indian cuisine (cream, tomato and butter based) which is a far cry from South Indian cuisine (dry spices, tamarind and water based). I miss the variety of south Indian spices and dishes e.g. dosas and idlis I was there for dinner so did not have a chance to try their lunch buffet. I had the eggplant a-la-carte (came with rice, naan, daal, sambhar, garbanzo beans curry, pickles, yogurt and chutney) and my taste buds went on a nostalgic journey home to southern India. The food was authentic and fresh and had not been "Americanized". I live in Eugene but I plan on making a trip back when I get home sick. Love, Love, Love the food!!!

I've eaten here several times, the buffet is a good one to get quick food. I recommend eating there for dinner though, the entrees are awesome and the service is always stellar. They make you feel extremely welcome and the food is very, very good. Love the main guy that is there, he really likes talking to patrons and has a very easy smile and makes you feel great about being there, but not over the top, in a fake way, he is very easy breezy, and nice. We keep coming back! Prices are 8-15 dollars and very worth it.

Taj Palace is A-OK, considering it seems to be the only Indian joint in town. I know i've tasted better elsewhere, but their food still hit the spot. When I eat Indian food I tend to eat the same things: chicken tikka masala, lamb vindaloo, or lamb biryani. I also like the sag paneer (spinach and cheese), anything korma, other vegetable curries, and tandori chicken, but not on my dime unless it's in a buffet. Last night I had a craving for a chicken tikka masala burrito but I didn't want to go to the store to buy all the ingredients, or drive all the way to San Francisco, so BD and I just settled for Taj Palace. it was a slow night with about 5 tables. Ambiance - wise, it was just okay. They had all their customers sitting in the upper platform area and the music was off so it was pretty quiet. Service was friendly and attentive until towards the end when the server seemed to disappear and we had to wait for water, togo boxes, and the check. We ordered: chicken chili (appetizer) - they were out of lamb samosas which was a bummer. This dish was small pieces of chicken stir fried in a bunch of spices including ginger, peppers, garlic and onions. I think they used dark meat chicken and it may have been sitting out a little, or old because some parts for hard and chewy. The taste was nice but pretty salty. It would have been good with rice. chicken tikka masala - BD's dish and it was pretty much like any other tikka masala. lamb biryani - a little disappointing. A huge platter of rice (not quite basmati, which is a shame because one of the best things I love about Indian food is their rice, it's not as wet and sticky like jasmine rice) with a few bits of lamb. The lamb was a little tough but in the fatty parts it was just right. There were some nice spices incorporated in the dish but it wasn't enough. Luckily it comes with a side of curry (I asked to sub it with the tikka masala) and a side of a creamy yogurt/ cucumber sauce so after I mixed everything together very well, it was like I was eating a huge heaping of lamb tikka masala and then it tasted good, though not in a lamb biryani kinda way. Naan came with BD's dish and it was nice. BD loves their mint/ cilantro sauce. I want to try their lunch buffet, for sure. Update*** Recently returned and had the lamb korma and vegetable samosas (they don't do lamb samosas anymore). The curry was delicious! I really enjoyed it, still wished they used basmati rice though. And the samosas were pretty large and quite tasty with the mint and spicy sauce. I'd definitely return and order those dishes again. BD had the onion pakora and there were mainly huge bits of batter and small slices of onion. He also had the chicken ginger curry, spicy and bright red. He enjoyed his dish too. I took a bite but liked my lamb curry better.

Nice selection on the buffet: two chicken dishes, plus Tandoori. Three curries: pork and two veggie koorma and saag. The only poor dishes are the pakora's and the rice is not Asian. The flavors are appropriate and good heat. Definitely would make this a come back place.

So, after reading the reviews, I figured let's give it a try. After walking in to the restaurant, I was a little worried; I was the only person in the restaurant on a Friday night around 6pm. For the food, I went with lamb vindaloo. The vindaloo sauce was very good, some of the best, I've had. The lamb was a bit tough. The naan was a little too crispy for my taste, but tasted good. The rice, which should be basmati, tasted like the white rice from a Chinese restaurant which really bothered me. Other than the rice, the food was decent. I'll give er another shot!

My wife and I had lunch here and enjoyed it. Lunch buffet very reasonable and quality was very good for buffet. We look forward to going again. Very clean and comfortable. We love Indian food and happy to find this place.

  • Jen J.

The food was ok but the service was awful. We felt like we were not welcome and they will nickle and dime you for everything. I just don't see how businesses don't understand something as simple as service with a smile.

  • Bill D.

Good solid Indian fare here! Had to get my fix so went for the buffet and was well pleased with the offering and the freshness (don't ask me to pronounce or spell what I had, but it was good!). Place was clean and the staff had the right attitude. Hey, my youngest daughter even loved it! Need I say more?

  • Christi K.

Honestly, I have had better Indian food. There were alot of choices on the buffet, so for that I will give them the 3 stars. The two desserts they had on the buffet were delicious. One was some sort of mango pudding and the other was rice based. The service was amazing, very attentive and friendly.

Incredible Indian food. The best I've ever had. My work out buddy has traveled to Fiji alot and there is a high percentage if Indians and Indian restaurants in Fiji - go figure. Anyway, he said it's the best he's ever had too.

  • Kkkkk F.

Ordered paneer korma and chicken tikka masala to go for dinner. Both curries were on the watery side. Most Indian restaurants serve more flavorful and creamy curries during dinner and more watered down ones in their lunch buffets, so we were dissappointed that it was buffet quality. Also, the paneer korma came out with a load of peas and the rice was plain long grain instead of basmati. Overall, a little dissappointing, but still a viable option if you expect mediocre Indian food.

Tasty dinner buffet and live performance (belly dancing) as it was First Friday. My compatriot and I chose to go for the belly dancing. I could see it being a turn-off if you're not into that sort of thing. The buffet is fully loaded with all kinds of meat and vegetable dishes. I'd go again!

I lived in the Bay Area for a long time and had many high-quality ethnic restaurants to choose from. This wonderful Indian restaurant is a great part of the ethnic diversity of restaurants in Bend. Many delicious dishes to choose from at the buffet and what a great price for all you can eat! I recommend everyone go try it!

I've been going to the Taj Palace since we first moved to Central Oregon in '03. My kids (now ages 8 and 5) insist this is their favorite restaurant ... beating out McDonald's, Red Robin & the Olive Garden. We dine here at least once a month ... always for the lunch buffet. We always order a Mango Lasse to accompany our meal ... Delicious! The employees recognize us, we dine there so frequently. They've also been very gracious on multiple occasions ... helping my daughter and I learn how to wrap a sari and showing us how the naan bread is made in the tandoori oven in the kitchen.

I got take out for dinner the other night. It was ok. Nothing special. I might try the lunch buffet one day but generally compared to its competition- it's good. Service was good.

I so wanted some Indian food for lunch so I jusmped on Yelp and found the Taj Palace. It was quite tasty, and fast because it was a buffet (which I needed since I had an appointment to get to). I was startled to find a beef dish on the buffet, though! I do not think I have ever even seen beef in an Indian restaurant. How strange....... But everything was tasty and pretty much what you would expect (except for the beef). I am taking off one star for the fact that they did not cut up the chicken very carefully in one dish and I got a couple of gristley pieces that put me off a bit. They should be more careful about that.

Been going to Taj for several years now with a good friend of mine who enjoys Indian cuisine. We get together every couple of months and do the lunch buffet. To be fair, I can't pronounce even a third of the things on the menu (or buffet) but love just about every dish they offer. I've taken my family there, but they refuse to ever step foot in it again and tell me emphatically, "That is your gig to do with J.C." No sense of adventure! They balk over the sight of it and complain about the smell. My son says, "Everything is cooked with curry and I'm not a big fan of curry." He is so wrong as I try in vain to tell him about _______ but can never remember (or pronounce) the name of such and such dish. Oh well, their loss. I love it and count down the days a couple weeks before our quarterly lunch meetings. I've never been there for dinner but feel the $7.95 all you can eat lunch buffet is so worth it. My ONLY reason for a four-star rating is simply that I cannot fairly say "It's as good as it gets" since this is truly my only experience with Indian food. But I can say without hesitation that "Yay, I am a fan!" Just went for lunch on Friday, June 10th....our next lunch meeting won't be until September. Guess I'll start counting down the days in August!

  • Kevin P.

Went here for the lunch buffet. It was pretty good. They had the normal selection of fried stuff, 3 types of chicken and tons of potato type action. The yellow rice was pretty good and they had regular white rice there too. No real surprised here except for the fact that there were pretty much NO desserts in the buffet. No pinapple anything, no mango anything, no sweet honey doughballs (forgot what they're called). If there had been a something sweet to finish off lunch I would give it a 4. Still a solid lunch place to get all you can eat for less than 10 bucks.
