Burrito was mediocre, and pretty small for the price point. The whole wheat tortilla was chewy, and due to the small amount of fillings, much of the tortilla was doubled up. Too much tortilla in each bite. The burrito filling was decent, nothing special. I found the celery and carrots in with the vegetable mix an odd choice. I was excited when the server came out with fresh salsa, but even that lacked flavor and spice.

Delicious, great value, prompt service. I don't know another place you can get a yummy chix enchilada and pork tamale for under $6!

Ive been holding back for a few days thinking what kind of place I'd want to review as number 300. When I read Todd A's review this morning for the Taco Stand, I thought "number 300 for sure". Because I had not been in the Taco Stand for probably three years and Todd's review made me remember what I was missing. I remember Taco Stand for the good food, sparkling clean if spartan interior, friendly people behind the counter and low prices. Also because the owners of this Mexican "good fresh food fast"" place are originally from New Jersey. A state not home to me by birth, but home to me by heart for the half a dozen or so years I lived there. So I felt as if review 300 would be a good time to support "home team" folks too. Today being Monday and Monday being "Mole special" day at Taco Stand (some things endure over the years), in hubby and I went so I could get my mole fix and refresh my memory. Mole (negro, rioja or verde) is one of my favorite things and Taco Stand's special today was a good "Chicken Mole Tostada" for under $6. Even though I asked them to hold the beans and the cheese and the sour cream, it was so generous a serving of chicken and rice and mole negro on a small, crispy tortilla and topped with diced tomatoes and onions that I had trouble finishing my portion. Good thing my husband was along to pitch in! After he polished off a chicken and a pork tamale, a mere $2.50 each, generously filled with savory fillings and wrapped in perfectly steamed cornmeal masa. Several vegetarian options are also listed on the whiteboard along with meat options. The drill is you order at the counter and the food is delivered, promptly, to your table and served piping hot. Service is in plastic or cardboard containers and while I have to say that is normally "against my religion" in sit down restaurants, it seems just right at Taco Stand. Each table sports a squeeze bottle of green sauce and another of red sauce, each yummy sauce kept nice and cold by the ice bath on which they sit inside a little container. And I know I mentioned at the opening how sparking clean Taco Stand is but it's worth saying that again here, even the condiment containers that get used all the time are ultra clean. Somehow that makes me feel all the more welcome there. Although located in a Bend neighborhood that has seen better days, and an unpretentious setting, everything about the Taco Stand clearly communicates the owner's' pride in getting things right and making everyone feel welcome. Just as friendly people and good food as we remembered. Two thumbs up...well four actually, counting my hubby's' thumbs too. Why has it been so long since we've been here, we asked ourselves, as we watched other customers, many of them clearly regulars, come and go. Can't say but we'll be back soon again now. Thanks to Todd A's review for making me remember! Hours are 11a - 4p (not sure if they're open weekends) so go earlier or later to avoid the lunch time crowds in this little place, But do yourself a favor and go...to eat in or take out. I'm already thinking ahead to the spicy vegetables with black beans and rice that are calling my name for our next visit.

Friendly service, reasonable prices*, mediocre food. I had a Colorado burrito that wasn't 'Colorado' style at all, but not bad. The ketchup-squeeze-bottle salsa was good. For variety's sake, I'll probably head back and try a taco or two. * For sake of clarity, $3 for a taco or $6.25 for a smallish burrito isn't that cheap. Maybe I'd get excited if they through in some chips. I'm not sure why other reviewers are so shocked by the prices. Especially considering that you have to drive out of your way to get there (unless you're picking up some excellent Boneyard brews!).

  • Kevin M.

Food this fresh and flavorful at a price-point so low is possibly worthy of six stars. A couple items may be needed to properly fill yourself, but for lunch one is perfect. Bonus points for being kiddy corner to Boneyard. With savings from the Wednesday growler special, treat yourself to lunch! And like on growler Wednesdays at Boneyard, it fills up when the clock strikes noon, so make it an early lunch!

  • Crystal H.

Thank you Bend yelpers and the fine folks at Boneyard Beer for suggesting Taco Stand. This tiny, barren strip mall doesn't look like it would have something delicious hiding inside, but trust me. It's worth a gander after a hearty beer tasting at Boneyard. These tacos are nothing super special (especially if you've been spoiled by amazing eats in California etc). The pork was on the dry side, but considering there is nothing else around, they are pretty fantastic. Lucky for us we got there just before they closed. It looks like they get crushed with a lunch crowd, but when we were there, it was all-too-quiet.

I ordered a chili relleno. When served I was surprised because I have never seen anything that looked like it. After a few bites I rushed to the bathroom and back it came. I was diaphoretic and had severe vertigo. Never again!

  • Greg J.

The Taco Stand use to be a great place, in the 90's i lived near by and we went there often for great Mexican food, now it seems like its past its prime. The food was over salted and seemed like everything was out of a can and put through a microwave, We ordered veggie tacos and they fell apart right away and couldn't be eaten, ya know it is a tragedy when tacos are so wet they fall apart. The black beans were overly salty and basically unappetizing to say the least, we also ordered Carnita's tacos and they were dry and tasteless. So in its day it was great but i l will avoid the Taco Stand from now on.

    (2)
  • Kent G.

Cheap, yes, but you get what you pay for. Everything is nuked in a microwave. Fresh ingredients properly cooked would greatly improve their food quality. Good place to eat if you are a financially-struggling college student and couldn't be bothered to make the same food in your kitchen at home using fresh ingredients at a fraction of the cost.

  • Rachel R.

I've come here a few times really wanting to like this place, but without fail the food has always been subpar (I usually end up throwing it out, which I never do) and the staff are really rude. I do not plan on going back.

  • Bend R.

I love this place. I love Gene the owner, the staff, the food, everything. My favorite thing to eat there is the bean rice and cheese burrito with both black and refried beans enchilada style. If I could eat taco stand for lunch every day of the week, I would.

  • Todd A.

Is the food gourmet? No. Is the ambiance something you will never forget...? No. Then why five stars? This place makes great food at a great price and it is full of locals. The proprietors are fantastic locals that support the community and the food has not changed in the 15 years I have been going there and please please don't change it. I know the special menu by heart and if I am downtown on Mondays (Chicken Mole Special $5.50) I stop by. If it is Thursday then try the Green Verde Mole same price. All the grub here is freshly made and made to order. The salsa is really good. If you like spicy then try the Monster sauce. Anyway, good stuff at an unbeatable value. I also love how they close for a couple weeks in the summer when they go on vacation.

Carnitas tacos, verde sauce. Your welcome.

    (5)
  • Laura R.

Wow. Seriously? The chile relleno (usually my favorite) was premade then nuked. Waaaaay over-nuked. In fact, everything was nuked then served in cardboard fry baskets. The relleno was a thick cake of cornbread with a canned chile and white cheese inside. Sauce was like a pureed salsa (good tasting), but the whole thing was nuked until it was leathery on the bottom, and the sauce had turned to red concrete on the sides of the fry box. In the plus column? It was relatively cheap. Also, a credibly good enchilada sauce on the nuked chicken enchilada. Maybe this is typical of Mexican food in Bend. If so, we'll steer clear.

Gene the owner is great, solid food for cheap, nothing fancy but just a few bucks so fair as can be

  • Kim R.

Best hole in the wall Mexican place in town. They are closed after 5 and on weekends and for vacations LOL that's laid back. What more could you want, super cheap, delicious, tamales like grandma made them, in corn husks, not under sauce. Thanks for keeping it real TS~! Loyal & Local FCL~

  • Erin R.

In our new neighborhood, but we couldn't catch them open. We now learn this is the place for lunch. It was a full house on a Monday afternoon, but we had a place to sit and our food HOT in less than 5 minutes. This has to be by far the best lunch value in town, its fast, its hot, its a healthier version of Mexican food with veggies in the steak burrito instead of rice and beans, and for me its close. Just wish they were open for dinner!!

had the verde burrito and the pork was amazing. I should have saved 1/2 for leftovers but it was so good.

  • Jen F.

Hard to find, worth the trouble! The Taco Stand is a great place for a cheap, fast lunch. Try a Mole Melt (it's a special - check with them for availability) or any of the burritos "enchilada style" - you will be glad you did!

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
