Got myself a growler fill and a couple bottles and cans. Craftbeervana! Too many too chose from so I stuck to the staples. Sierra Nevada torpedoes & had to try Deschutes Armory XPA. Awesome atmosphere for just chilling. It reminded me of a plumbing store with a grip of beers and food. A quaint bar with a low ceilings and tap handles from across the craft beer world. Lit dimly and the small booths that could cater well to a hot date. Good spirit selection, fine scotches. It caters to the beer snob, scotch snob, (not sure about the wine snob, I didn't look.) in all of us without pretentious snobbery from the staff. The staff both upstairs and downstairs were cordial and informative. This is the Mecca for beer in Bend. If you want the cornucopia of selection, it's here. BTW, the Deschutes XPA, would be a great Summer pale but the hops are not as prevalent as they make it seem. The gravity is rather low @5.9%, not and Xtra or an Imperial IPA. Would be great to fill the growler and take it hiking but not going to satisfy the hop-head, unless it's a citrus hop-head.

Great new menu. Always a good variety of taps. Friendly, cozy, great atmosphere. We like to sit at the bar - if there is room - and chat with Glen. We love the interesting selection of taps. The food is quite good - try the clam chowder - some of the best I've ever had!

Great potential, but disappointing on the inside considering the charming church location. We had planned to eat dinner there but ended up with beer and cider only as we were thought the menu was in need of improvement and the atmosphere was lacking.

We went here after having been to all the breweries in Bend on our last night. We walked, with snow falling, it was kind of magical. We didn't get there in time to go to the homebrew shop or see the awesome coolers of bottled beers but it looked rad even with the lights off. I do kinda wish that they'd had some of the bottles downstairs in the pub, but I overcame my disappointment with little trouble. Great tap list. Good staff who knew what they were talking about. Cool atmosphere. Very German. I got talked into (because it's so hard) a fried apple and ice cream dish with caramel, it was good. I can certainly see myself going back during future visits. I will try to make it during the day and for a whole meal.

I went here once for a quick beer midafternoon. Their beer selection is fantastic! They have a good selection, not all IPA's, not all porters. They have a bit of everything, so anyone can find a beer they'll like. Moving here over a year ago, I've noticed that everyone around here run heavy on the IPA's so I was glad to see a beer menu with plenty of other non-IPA beers. I haven't experienced their food, but perhaps next time. I felt a little naughty drinking a beer in a former church tehehehe!

I log on to yelp very infrequently, and usually only when I'm either really ecstatic or really pissed off. Today, it's the latter. This place has a posted closing time of 11pm on Saturdays. I walked in around 10:05pm and was told that it was past last call, and that the waitress had locked the door but 'something was wrong with the door' and I was able to sneak in, apparently. There was a 'locals only' crowd in there and the record might as well have scratched when I walked in. Not only did I feel misinformed, but also like I wasn't in the 'cool kids club' (who probably got served additional beers after I left). If you are looking to be treated like a second-class citizen and have no regard for posted business hours, this is the place for you. The selection of beers looked good, but who gives a flying duck when the Saturday night leniency is nonexistent (Sat should be the night where you don't close early, right?) and the vibe is surprisingly exclusive for a divey hole.

Went there last night with husband because we'd never been before and found a coupon so thought we'd try it. Had no expectations of it since I hadn't heard much about it and hadn't had the chance to check Yelp. First, the atmosphere of the place -- wait! What atmosphere? Crappy tables, crappy lighting, crappy chairs. Rather than being in the basement of this fascinating building, you felt like you were in a poorly converted garage. Since I instantly hated the "restaurant" part, we sat at the small bar and it was quite cute. The bar-tender was super attentive and friendly, they had a great selection of unique taps and she was very knowledgeable about them and generous with tasters. I really quite liked that part. The food was not great though. If I'd felt like someone would have done better, I would have returned the fries for being under-cooked, the pork/hamburger patty for being under-cooked (it was PORK - how does one eat under-cooked pork??) and my bun for being burned but somehow I had the sense was that, for this place, it could be worse so why bother complaining? If you took the food & the rest of the place out, I would give the LITTLE bar 4 stars. The only thing I didn't like about it was that ALL of their dark-beers were served in 10 ounce snifters rather than 16 ounce pints for the same price (I know, some of them are more expensive but really not a regular stout or porter for regular $$ out of all those taps??) Having said that, it was the most taps I've seen devoted to darks in this town so I appreciated having the choice. Plus, the other taps weren't your run-of-the-mills. They had some very unusual/uncommon offerings which was a pleasant surprise. Whoever is responsible for choosing those taps must be a beer know-it-all :)

Beer selection was good but the food options were sad. Tried the potatoes, "Irish" nachos sub tortilla chips with chicken and wings. The potatoes lacked flavor with a mysterious bacon jelly and white sauce, the nachos were sitting in a puddle of liquid and had cheese sauce with guacamole out of a bag, the wings still had feather remnants. At least the beer drowned the disappointment.

I had a wonderful experience here. I checked out the Brew & Bottle Shop upstairs and it was amazing! Such a huge selection of bottled beers from around the country as well as every piece of equipment you'd need to brew your own. The pub downstairs was my favorite part though.. I met one of the owners, Tom, and he was incredibly nice, helpful, and even hooked me up with "Hailey's Comet" of beers while I was there (perfect timing). The keg had just went on tap a couple hours prior to my arrival and it couldn't have been a beer experience. Love this place. If you are in Bend, THIS IS A MUST VISIT!

Food = 3 (pork sandwich was below average) Price = 3 (not cheap... just saying) Experience = 3 (it was comedy night... which was just okay... but, it's a terrible place for any type of show... the columns block most of the views. No windows basement type place... I'm not ever remotely tempted to go back... sorry) Okay beer selection and good service makes up for a lot here.

First off, let me start by saying the bottle and brew supply shop is awesome. They get 4 stars. Totally different story for the pub downstairs. I have only been to the pub once which was a while ago but I was excited to finally attend their happy hour which at the time was free pizza from 4-6pm daily. We got there at 5:15pm and there wasn't any pizza out. I asked the waitress if happy hour pizza was still going on ans she said, "yes the chef is making them now and it should be out in 10 min. At 5:30 I asked again about the pizza and she said it is going to take a little longer. We ordered beers waiting for it to come out and at 6pm we asked the waitress again and she said, "Oh the chef actually decided not to make it since it is 6pm and happy hour is over. I was like, " well your sign says there is free pizza at happy hour daily from 4-6pm. She rolled her eyes and asked if we wanted to order any food. Other customers were upset as well. We ordered a hot wings and when they came out there were 5 tiny little wings. They tasted like your typical grocery store wings and barely had any meat on them. I called the manager and nicely told him what happened in the pub. Instead of saying, "I am sorry to hear that, thank you for letting me know. Why don't you give us another try", He got defensive and defended the happy hour sign by saying well it isn't exactly from 4-6pm. Even though I got their at 5:15pm and there wasn't any pizza. I definitely won't be back.

I had to give this place 5 stars because this is as good as it gets when it comes to a converted church. This may be the only church to bar conversion I've been to - but how much better can it get. I'm not one to go to church and I'll go back to this place over and over. Good beer choices and knowledgeable staff. Plus - while I was there there was free pizza as a happy hour special.

Pub in Bend with a Brew Supply and Bottle Shop upstairs. Very cozy feel in basement where the draft beer and bar is. If you are looking for a great beer selection and lots of intel on beer and brewing then head here. Had a delicious pizza for my dinner. 8" enough for one person, maybe share. Friendly staff. Could use a little more decor, that's a work in progress, they are only a 1 year plus old. They have events featuring different breweries. Get on their email list, facebook, and twitter for these announcements

Nice atmosphere...great beer selection...things you won't find on tap elsewhere in Bend...food is OK but it's a bit strange having it come from upstairs...server/bartender may need to make a phone call to ask about special requests...beer pours are usually not topped out and taster amounts are smallest ever encountered...barely wet the taster glass.

Decent beer selection that is constantly changing. I have only eaten here once, ordered the Platypus burger, a combination of ground beef and sausage. It was tasty, but it gave me trouble for a few hours after. Not many healthy selections on the menu, but if you want that, you probably shouldn't go to a pub anyway.

I was glad to see the old Ernesto's location take on a new tenant finally. The brew shop upstairs has a great selection of equipment and beer. The food in the pub is ok, but not all that impressive. The clam chowder is the best thing I have had there. I finally had a chance to take advantage...at least I thought.... of what their big sign out front states. HAPPY HOUR 4 TO 6 FREE PIZZA. This is how Ernesto's used to pack it's basement bar. I cruised in about 4:45PM and ordered up a tall one, feeling really hungry, I asked the waiter if the happy hour pizza was availiable not seeing anything around. He said, "oh that usually comes out at 5:00. " I'm thinking to myself, did I read the sign wrong???? After 5:00 I asked again about the FREE HAPPY HOUR PIZZA, still none in sight. The owner said if the cook gets busy it can be even later. There were ten people in the whole place and only 4 were eating. Wow, I would hate to be the cook if the place was one quarter full. This is bad business. I felt lied to after driving by the sign for weeks. At that point I left and will most likely not be back. I advised the owner that he should change his sign. Therefore a 1 star for the Platypus. (picture of sign attached)

Lots of folks throw around the term beer city usa while not technically true Bend is a brew mecca and that being said this is that meccas prayer rug. The best homebrew store i have found sits upstairs from a cozy little pub down a quick flight of stairs. The brew shop is staffed by the owners all retired postal workers so spare them any grief, and all 3 are very well versed is all aspects of fermentation be it beer wine cider or mead hell they even carry cheese making supply's. But back to the reAl review the Platty as everyone calls it 16 taps of rotating goodness national regional and local. Best selection of beer in town by far. This is the place the brewers drink at any given night you will bump into boneyard boys the goodlife crew. Dechutes guys i could go on but you get the point. Currently Robert runs the upstairs kitchen and he loves to cook and it shows. The bar staff is quick and knowlagable besides great beer they have local spirits for that one person who needs a cocktail. Also the CW Irwin Bourbon is mashed and distilled locally in Bend so go ahead and order up a shot! ( what you did not expect me to plug my own whiskey?). Five stars go visit!

A mellow Tuesday afternoon in the warm weather of late June, this place is more than befitting. The lounge/ bar/ dining area is located a few stairs under the converted church and feels cool, shady and just right for a beer lover in Bend. Food is pretty damn good; fries are exceptional, with the house style seasoning, the Platypus burger was unexpectedly tangy with the sausage like burger party and beer sampler is damn worth it. Live long and Fuckin prosper. Pardon my language that place is Holy.

Saw five star review on Yelp so my husband and I decided to give it a try. Outside is a bit crusty and we started having second thoughts about going in, but once we saw the clean, neat pub and dining area decided it was safe. Met one of the owners who was very friendly and gave us several beer samples to help us make a choice to go with our lunch. Ordered the fish and chips and a cup of the clam chowder. Excellent!!! Fish was nicely breaded and the fries were uniquely seasoned and very crisp....just the way I like them. I've had clam chowder at lots of places, but this was the best. Smoked pork gives it a wonderful flavor. We will definitely return!

What a great business, worthy of local support! The best selection of bottled beer in Bend, with a great selection of ciders as well! I was impressed with the inventory of wine making procurements, as well as yeast inventory. The employee's are very laid back and friendly. For home brew ingredients and equipment, their prices are on par with anything you will find online. (no 'bend markup'!!!) As far as downstairs goes, I have not experienced their food, but the tap selection is nice. They serve 20 oz 'pints', and although not my first choice for ambiance, it's rather convenient to be able to preview the tap list online. It's alway changing and your favorite brew is bound to come on tap. A business worth patronizing. Check it out. cheers

This was the very first location I stopped at in Bend. Completely by accident, I saw them from the BofA across the street and was drawn like a moth to a flame. I call it...The Trifecta. A bottle shop with hundreds to choose from, a homebrew store...the best in Central Oregon, and a casual rotating-tap pub downstairs. The owners are always glad you came and check on you regularly to make sure you are enjoying every minute.

Good hospitality, great tap list! They have steel tip darts, which I am totally into. The food gets a 3 star review, but it's all about the beer here!

Platypus and The Brew Shop all one place is the place for Beer in Bend OR. Upstairs you will find a vast array of beer from all over the world and especially hard to finds. I loaded up a case of good stuff then headed downstairs for a recovery beer. 14 taps of liquid to meet anyone's tastes. They have a good list of Pub food that stands on it's own. Service was good and always attentive. Tonight I ordered the special Pulled Pork sandwich and the Bavarian appetizer plate. No disappointment here except for the chips. Please get rid of those. By yourself or with friends this is a nice stop.

Nice rotating tap list, and some pretty good pub food. Staff is extremely friendly, and more than happy to offer samples to help with your selection. The bottle shop upstairs probably has the best selection in town.

  • Jenn C.

I don't think I'd go there for food if I was wanting something substantial but to sit somewhere quiet and have a good beer or two? Yes! They have pizza free at happy hour and that's probably the time to go. I didn't notice much of a menu, but that is the only thing I'd say needs improvement. They sell Aardvark Hot Sauce upstairs, which is cool I usually have to order it online. (It's so good) This place is cool and more of a locals secret. I really like it.

Very excited when Platypus pub opened in an otherwise very dry, mid-town location on 3rd street. While it's not the best for bringing kids, they do allow them, and, well, we have 1, so it's convenient that we can bring her and get a beer there without a hassle. I love that you can visit upstairs at the brew shop, and purchase from hundreds of beers to bring downstairs to try. I like that they rotate the kegs on tap on a regular basis - I think there are 15 - with a variety of styles and from all over the world, though last time I was there it was heavy on the Oregon beers, which is good, but so is everywhere else in town. Nice to know every time I go it will be different. Lastly, I would not recommend eating at this joint, hence the three stars. Seriously, the menu items are just fine for pub grub, how can you mess these simple items up?!?!?! Unfortunately, everything we have ordered thus far has been mediocre at best - fries cold and soggy, terrible wings, sausage plate was very brown with no distinct flavors, I should stop now. We would be regular customers if the food improved, but for now, we'll just stick to stopping by for a quick beer or two before heading home for dinner.

My husband and I only visited the upstairs shop, but I have to say I was VERY impressed! Such a wide variety to choose from and organized very well. The employees were very helpful and friendly. We love beer, and if you do too, this is a def must go to! :)

I'm a fan of their expansive offerings on tap. There's something for just about everyone over 21 including dark & chewy beers, hoppy IPA's, cider, and "fizzy yellow beer". (Yes, it actually says that on the menu.) SO... consider my four stars just for that lineup. Service? Not the best. Wait staff is either overworked or flakey... tough to tell. Food? Eh... it's OK. Seems like their menu is still in flux and they are still trying to work out the kinks. The only "really bad" item I've had is the fish & chips. Everything else was fine, but nothing worthy of more than three stars. Atmosphere? Decor is like a late-century English pub with low lighting and dark finish. It's LOUD and echo-y. It could be improved by installing some carpet over the cement floors. C'mon guys... it's not like we're dumping peanut shells off the tables. That all being said... the reason I go to the Platypus is to enjoy a tasty beverage. The bottle & brewing supply shop upstairs are awesome too (see: "The Brew Shop").

15 of the best taps in town (probably 100 miles around). The name comes from two of the owners being Duck fans and the other two being Beaver fans. You know what you get when you combine a Duck and a Beaver?... Anyway, if you are a micro brew or craft beer fan, I can only give you this advice... Go, you wont be sorry. These guys really know how to pick their beer.

Out of towners looking for a lunch spot. First time for us at the Platypus. The Pub is downstairs from the side entrance. Cool, cozy English Pub atmosohere. 15 great micro beers on tap. Both local and entire west coast, some international beers as well. Awsome food, fresh and great value. If you want to feel and be treated like a local, this is the place. Very friendly staff and customers. We even got a local hiking spot recomendation while there. Met the owner and his daughter on our lunch time visit. We definatley will be back again.

While visiting in Bend for the first time from Alabama we had a great experience at Platypus Pub. I had the Fish & Chips and the wife had the Platypus Burger. Both were delicious. Our server, Becky, gave us info and explained how the Pub got it's name. ( You'll have to go there to find out). Met one of the owners, Glen who also gave us good info about the Bend area and it was fun to talk some football with a knowledgeable college football fan like Glen. Huge selection of beers.

Why don't you give us another try", He got defensive and defended the happy hour sign by saying well it isn't exactly from 4-6pm. Even though I got their at 5:15pm and there wasn't any pizza. I definitely won't be back.

I went for trivia and had a blast. The food was great, and they had an extensive tap list to compliment.

We were at The Platypus Pub for the soft opening in September. The clam chowder is excellent ! The brew selections is great. The taps probably rotate quickly, given the high interest in the Bend area for great beer.

Love this place! So great to see a local biz fill this space & succeed. The Bottle Beer selection is the best in Bend. Great selection on tap, good food & cool atmosphere! Always friendly service by people who definitely enjoy their work.

Great selection of beer downstairs on tap, and upstairs in the shop there were an incredible number of bottles available for sale. The clam chowder was top notch, too!

Awesome beer selection, and the only place where we had free beer samplers. The food is hearty and simple but it's also cheap and the portions are huge! I thought it was pretty funny that the place looks like a small church too haha.
