I remember being so excited when I was 18, a new freshman at OSU and my CM (RA, whatever you call it) took me and a few other people to go to "breakfast" at this place, at like 2 AM with a whole bunch of other people from our building. She kept going on about how it was basically an institution, as was the old guy that sits at the counter and is ALWAYS there at the early hours of the morning. It was tres exciting because, well, I lived a pretty sheltered life up until that point and it would be easier to obtain the Golden Fleece than go hang out in high school. The second the doors opened. Woosh! The noxious smell hits you in the face like a gale force wind. The place smells like stale pop when it is poured outside on the ground, in the heat and goes rancid. Mix that horrific smell with the scent of 80 lbs of rancid grease hanging off of the walls, ceiling and floor. Barf. If Lady Gaga could bottle that scent, it would be her new, eau de toilette. The tables are sticky, the menus are sticky, the floors are sticky. This restaurant is really in need of a power wash. I have no idea how or why the health department hasn't shut them down. The amount of grease here makes this place a ridiculous fire hazard. If this place were to burn down, the fire department would have a heck of a time putting out this grease fire with water - it would be like a fire bomb. I hope they keep a ton of salt around in case this extreme fire hazard ever goes up in smoke. The food was okay the handful of times I went, but you really have to wonder about the sanitation of it when it's been served in a den of filth.

If you want a simple breakfast, this is the place. Our group got the Country Breakfast with French Toast, pancakes, and waffle. All eggs were made exactly as ordered along with FT, P, and W. We'll be back.

Abysmal food, terrible service. Absolutely no redeeming qualities at this place. Reluctantly gave it one star.

I was visiting some friends in Stillwater and they took me here for Sunday breakfast. Good thing we got in early (~9am), because by 10:00, the place was full. It's a great greasy spoon restaurant. I got the Full Breakfast, 2 scrambled eggs, 3 pcs of bacon, french toast, and hash browns. It was just what I needed after a late night of working in the shop and waking up early. The bacon was crispy, the french toast was just right, and the eggs were scrambled (no runny eggs for me!) The hash browns could be ordered "extra crisp", which is what my friend did, but either original or extra crisp, the hash browns were delicious. The coffee was black - none of that brown water for me! Service was great. She was really attentive and kept our glasses & mugs full. Next time I visit, I'll be asking to return here. I'd love to try their Biscuits & Gravy or the chicken fried steak and potatoes.

Not the best food in town, but worth a mention if you like breakfast foods. They have a great waffle, nice and crispy. However, try not to watch the open kitchen too closely, it is not the cleanest I've ever seen. Staple drunken meal of Oklahoma State students, and a must try if you ever live in or are passing through Stillwater.

People let's be realistic. If the place was in violation of the health code then short cakes would not be open for business. Short cakes is a mom and pop diner. It is not a mass marketed, one in every city place to eat. Does the place have a lingering odor? Absolutely. But so does every other truck stop, greasy spoon that's worth stopping at in this country. The food is great and priced cheap. The place is wheelchair accessible. The seating is limited. It is a 24 hour open for business diner. My kids love the place. Short cakes takes the place of a home cooked breakfast for a college student in the absence of mom or at 2 am as mentioned by the other posters.

Only a couple of places in town to get a greasy spoon breakfast, and this one is a staple of university life. Aside from that, it's nothing special, dirty, mediocre service, and check your bill...we've been overcharged enough times to be suspicious.

Well, this is my favorite greasy spoon. Chicken fried steak and eggs == excellent. Country breakfast == excellent. Strawberry pankakes == excellent. Chicken strips with fries gravy and ranch == heart clogging excellent others - but those were my main picks. Prices are great. I have had the pleasure of eating here a lot over the course of 13 years and not once have I ever asked myself "Why do I come here". Its consistently a no brain-er. I would dock it a .5 star for the smoking allowed interior but I heard that they are expanding and eliminating that. Don't expect to get right in at bar closing time (2-2:30am) as there will be a line out the door. They are open 24-7-365.

No. I'll never go back to this place, even if it is just about the only thing open after the bars let out. If you want more grease on the walls, than in your crappy food, then head on over. The place is crawling with filth. Don't waste your time.

I mean, I get that it's a staple on a night of late night partying... Which has to be the only time people don't realize what is really going on bc they are so drunk. The place is just plain gross (stains and stuff falling from the ceiling gross) and the waitresses are so rude, ha- the college paper even had a story on that. Oh, and did I mention it's a trailer? Sure, they made a built-on but the original structure is that of a double-wide. So be sure to get plastered before you decide to visit shortcakes.

After going to Granny's, I've had to lower my rating here because they just do hospitality better. I love Shortcakes' food, but I love people more and people take precedence over food.

Visited on: multiple dates from 2012 to 2013 Eww. I get grossed out just thinking about this place. It's disgusting inside. It's cramped, dirty-feeling, and constantly smells like bleach, or more likely, drunk people's vomit and piss washed over by bleach. I'm pretty tolerant of subpar cleanliness and environment if the food is worth it, but in this case, 1. it's not, and 2. the grossness of this place is so extreme that it suppresses my appetite, regardless of how good the food is. I've had the following: - Country Breakfast with 2 eggs over easy, hash browns, sausage, and French toast - this was okay - Cheese Fries with Chili (chili cheese fries) - this was okay - Hamburger Steak (small) with French fries - this was mediocre - Breakfast Sirloin with French fries and Texas toast - this was gross, it tasted like rubber The only reason this place is still alive is because it's open 24 hours a day. The only other 24-hour sit-down option in Stillwater that I'm aware of is IHOP, which I'd gladly pick over this. Quite frankly, I'm really surprised that this place still has a 3 star average rating, and has even managed to get 4- and 5-star (?!!) ratings from certain diners who must be lacking eyes, noses, and taste buds.

Craptacular! It's one of those places that you know that you don't want to know thier health code rating. The food is usually good if you stick to certain things. The meat looks scarily out of date, so stick with waffles, pancakes, eggs, hashbrowns an the like. If you haven't eaten there you absolutely must eat there at least once. It is an iconic part of Stillwater.

I cannot believe that I have not yet reviewed this iconic place! Shortcake is THE greasy spoon for Stillwater, the college town that houses Oklahoma State as well as an outpost of Northern Oklahoma College. A few tidbits about Shortcakes: 1. notice the gorgeous (and rare) Oklahoma State Tiffany lamps on the ceiling. 2. although this place is a dive, they pass all their health inspections. If you look closely, the kitchen area is very clean. 3. service is extremely friendly and the daytime crowd is pretty folksy-friendly 4. the food is extremely cheap and good!! 5. nighttime crowd can be a little sketchy, especially the later it is simply because there is where the drunks come to sop up alcohol with some greasy food...be aware! Overall, Shortcakes is a place that will always hold a special place in my heart as an OSU alum!! I always make my way here every time I visit Stillwater.

Eh. Had the huevos mexicanos and it tasted like something I could've made better at home. Biscuits and gravy were bland and cold. Also, there was a mushroom growing out of the wall at the table we sat at.

Solid old time country breakfast, great price a throwback to simpler times . Open 24 hours , you can get a great variety of Americana style food. From cheeseburger and fries to the house speciality Chicken friend steak. This old place is worth a try. Small place so don't be surprised if there's a line after the bars close.

They make good food! Not the cleanest place in the world to eat but friendly staff & great prices!

One word...gross. Never eat here sober, you don't really want to know what your eating. I actually broke a tooth biting into a chicken strip here several years back. The staff is the best thing in the place personality wise

Ahh shortcakes, the tiny, dirty looking diner that makes some mean breakfast food!! This place really is the bomb, it's a good place to stop by whether it's late at night or early in the morning! Yes, the place is small and not very clean looking, but they will take care of you and fill your stomach with a delicious meal!! I will say I have only had the breakfast here and nothing else, but I haven't had one thing on the breakfast menu that I haven't liked! This place is pretty much a staple of Stillwater and I hope it's here when I come back to visit long after I have graduated!

This was a place listed in the hotel's list of local restaurant and given that we like to try small local restaurants we gave it a shot. Bad, bad decision. The grease in the food is probably the worst you'll find around and the service was terrible. Plus the more time you spend waiting on your food and staring around what little area is inside the restaurant you wonder if you really want to eat the food they bring out given the generally dirty appearance of the place.
