The Plaza Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

Overpriced and slow. Somehow they're always busy but I definitely think there is better in Altus.

If you're in Altus and you want a quality plate of food in a good atmosphere--the Plaza is the place for you. I'd call it among the best Mexican food places I've enjoyed, and certainly the tops for Altus, OK. Nothing on the menu is overpriced and the atmosphere is great, to boot. Quality salsa served with warmed, fresh chips greet you as soon as you sit down--along with a friendly wait-staff. Food is plentiful and you'll probably walk away slightly over-full if you finish your plate. Seafood is available, but I have never been brave enough to go all out on seafood in Altus, OK--maybe overcautious on my part, but I like playing it somewhat safe when I eat out. in short--if I want to eat out in Altus, OK--this is my first choice every time. I consider it a fun pastime to work my way through their large and tasty menu. The special usually includes drink and a honey-covered sopapilla for dessert, so ask what is available if you are so inclined. Only con about this place i can think of is that it closes at 4 on Sundays--meaning they are nice enough to give the other places in Altus a chance to get some business. Sadly, though, none can hold a candle to The Plaza.

Wow! Fresh guacamole, fajitas were great, service and decor was nice. An Altus treasure for sure. Margaritas were strong and tasty.

We had lunch a few days ago. It was good and reasonable. Tried the fried ice cream and it was awesome. It's out by Walmart now so I don't have to drive as far now. The new place is bigger has more room. The old place seemed cramped.

I have to agree with the positive comments other yelpers have made about this restaurant. The service is great, the decor is clean and modern, and the food is fresh and tastes great. The best place to eat in Altus by far!

  • Cricket D.

Since they have moved its gone the way of most eateries in Altus. The wait staff isn't near as good as they were prior to the move, just not as attentive. The food is now hit or miss. It is still the best place to go for Mexican in Altus. Eat here before Applebee's!

Fajitas were great. Quesadilla roll ups were awesome. Owners are very involved. Greeting everyone, taking orders, serving, cleaning up where needed. It can get busy. Loud, great food and a very involved staff. Will go back when in town.

Amazing! Fresh food and great service!!! Best meal I've had in Oklahoma! Veggie fajitas with shrimp were amazing! Best fried ice cream I've ever had as well.

We got right in. We did a combo Veggie and Chicken fajitas for two. Salsa is very flavorful, thick and just a hint of Cilantro and Jalapeño. This place is rocking, folks are crowing down! Really good food. Lots of servers, service is key: drinks, chips, salsa, etc.

The flavors of the food were really good, better than most Mexican restaurants I've visited at home in the Oklahoma City area. I ordered the nachos with beans and the works and they came out perfectly. It's nice to find a Mexican restaurant that doesn't use meat products in their beans and rice so that I can eat real Mexican food at the Mexican restaurant instead of substitutes. My daughter ordered the vegetable fajitas with no dairy and they cooked them exactly how she ordered them. She said that the flavors on the vegetables were really good. The only concern was that her beans were very cold, so cold that she could feel them through her tortilla. It kind of ruined the tortilla when she added them to the vegetables. I'm not sure why her beans were cold and ours weren't. The staff was also very patient with us and friendly. One person in our party picked out her table and sat down and refused to move while the rest of us waited our turn with the crowd at the door and our buzzer in hand. The staff came and got us and took us to the table along with the other person and they didn't complain. We appreciated that because it was an embarrassing situation. If we're ever in Altus again, we will definitely return to the Plaza.

Not bad. I ordered the Chicken Taquito combo that came with rice and beans. They were fresh, totillas were tender with just enough chicken. They put my rice and beans into little cup containers which I appreciated. Nothing spilled over or out of the togo box. I also received a bag of chips that tasted homemade. The salsa looked and tasted jarred, but it wasn't horrible. I was not crazy about the beans, but it may just be my personal tastes. I prefer my beans more whole and less "refried". Good guacamole with chunks of avacado. I would definitely recommend and go back.

I wasn't overly impressed with the food here, but it's the nicest Mexican restaurant in town, in terms of decor and space.... The menu has many options! For food alone, I'd try some of the other 'dives' in town, where the recipes are more authentic. But that's not to say to avoid this place, it's fine. In my experience, the service is amazing... We were a large group, and the waitress was on it!! The beer selection is a bit generic..... Enjoy! Great for families and groups!

I had dinner here recently and asked my server if they could make me a lemon drop martini or lemon drop shot. These are easy to obtain in Dallas. Unfortunately the bartender had never heard of this and didn't know how to make it. I expected them to just say no to my request but the bartender and server surprised me by going through with it. The bartender had to look up how to make it but I have to give her props for trying. My martini wasn't as tart as it should be but she got it pretty close. It was nice to drink something that reminded me of my favorite places back home. When I got my bill I noticed I wasn't even charged for it. It's possible they didn't know how to put on my bill because they don't have a drink like that in the system but either way I appreciated that so applied that est. $5 savings to the tip and ended up giving my server about 50%. Anyone willing to go out of their way for me like that will always be rewarded for it.

My family went back recently...we heard the restaurant had fresh blood. It was decent, and the chile relleno wasn't bad. However, this place still wouldn't survive in OKC or DFW or even Abilene or Lubbock. I raise my previous 2 stars to 3.

Let's just say that the food here was alright. Not great but not terrible either. The menu was extensive and offered various cuisine, not just Mexican. Actually, Tex-Mex was the main theme here. The guacamole was fresh and probably the best thing that came out on my order. I ordered the chicken flauta plate with charro beans. The beans were also good. Maybe I was disappointed at the small portion of flautas (5 in all) and they were small. The service was surprisingly quick considering it was the dinner rush and we were in a large group. The staff were great and attentive. Not sure if I'm ready to write this place off yet...

Been to alot of Mexican resturants and this one is clean and friendly. The food is very good, taste fresh. The tacos are my favorite they always seem fresh. The margarita is the best in town.

Service has always been pretty good here and this place always seems packed at dinner time. Chips and salsa is pretty good and you can ask for different kinds. First time here food was crap. I had fajitas that were burnt to a crisp and my wife had a taco salad drenched in cheese you would put on nachos at a gas station. But we tried it again and got there "street" like tacos. Total opposite reaction. These were awesome and they topped the street tacos with avocado which was good. Slightly expensive for tacos but they were really good.

    (3)
  • El C.

Food was fresh, flavorful and light. Ordered the tacos locos with a prepared Mexican beer and finished the night off with a tres leches Mexican cake. Server provided excellent service that's was timely and most of all, friendly. So don't take my word for it. Try it and write about it. Hopefully your experience is as good as mine.

Multiple people told me to go here and claimed it was the best Mexican in town (a claim that each one in town gets from different people). Not only was the food bland, and decidedly not authentic, but I have been grossed out both times I was there. The first time there was a puddle on the floor. The second time, a cockroach crawled on the shoulder of the hostess as she was ringing up our check. Will not eat there again.

I am very hard to please and The Plaza did it on my first visit! It is a clean restaurant, the food was hot to the very end and the flavor... Oh the flavor... Nothing was dry nor over flavored and it tastes just like San Antonio restaurants back home. The staff is friendly and polite and professional!!! The staff doesn't just wipe down the tables when you leave, they clean! If they focus this much on appearance I can only image how sanitary the kitchen is. I highly recommend! Oh! Get Jason as your waiter and you will not be disappointed.

If you like your dinner cheap in price and in quality, this is your place. I have no idea why its ranked as highly as it is; maybe I'm being to snobby for Altus, but the food should have tasted like it came from Mexico and not from a microwave. We started off with chips and salsa, the chips were hot and the salsa was cold the way I like it- but after a few dips in the salsa I realized it was basically cocktail sauce with chopped cilantro and onions in it. That right there should have been my cue to leave, not even to mention the odd smell that permeated outside the restaurant. We ordered the chimichanga meal and the enchiladas and split it. The chimichanga came with a queso "dipping" sauce that tasted like the nacho cheese you get at a movie theater, the chicken was definitely frozen, and for some reason it was served with potatoes(which were also microwaved). Why potatoes? I'm legitimately confused- why not rice and beans? The food was so subpar that it distracted me from the poor service. I had to go see a manager just to get a straw for our drinks. To end on a positive note, the drinks are hella cheap and the prices aren't terrible which is why I rated 2 and not 1.

Been here three times since last update and must say its going down hill fast. Prices are up. Food quality is strait out of a can. Three months ago had tacos. Dry hard meat, store bought totillas were hard either undercooked or stale. Two months ago enchiladas, meat was very greasy fat dripping out of the ends again undercooked hard store bought tortilla and the sauce was deff. canned cheese. One month ago. Steak Nachos, just really, bla. Could go into detail but suffice to say they sucked. In any case wont be going back. Pick up Taco is spot on the best always has been so no need for the Plaza. Shame, they started out so well also the place is unbelievably loud. Best feature is the service, always good.

This is the best mexican food in Altus (with the exception of pick up taco for lunch.) I am a local and both of these places have only been here a few years. This is the #1 place I recommend to eat at in Altus.

I should start off this review by saying we were very hungry by the time we were able to eat at The Plaza. However, we were seated quickly and attended to by a great server. She was full of recommendations. We demolished the chips and salsa and ordered queso. The salsa (and we consider ourselves connosuiers) was good. The queso, not so much. We also split an order if the double chicken fajitas. It came with really good rice and beans. We each got out own little tray of cheese, sour cream, fresh salsa, and guacamole. The fajitas were very good and my boyfriend said he was the fullest he had ever been in his life (quite an accomplishment). Overall: Very pleasant and solid, yummy food!

Who is rating these places? This is a sad, depressing, disgusting little town and the restaurants follow suit. There are flies everywhere at The Plaza and I am always worried I will get food poisoning at any of the local spots and this is no exception. Mediocre at best. The staff is slow and lacks good customer service, again, like everywhere here. I will say the decor is more pleasant than other spots but that's because it was just remodeled. Save your money and go to Dallas for the weekend and eat out there.

Got here at a pretty busy time on Monday night. From 6-8pm they have a clown named Jimminee that walks around making balloon animals for the kids. My husband described the place as "perfectly sufficient, I don't expect to find anything better in Altus". It was loud, but clean, and our waitress was friendly. Margaritas were okay and cheap, but I might not get another one. Then again, I like my drinks really boozy. We got Enchilada special (comes with tea & sopapilla) and giant burrito. With a side of guac (surprisingly fresh, just needed some more seasoning) and margarita our total was $30. In the next 6 months we'll be in Altus, I'm sure we'll end up back here once or twice more.

My husband and I have been here twice now, and we have been really underwhelmed both times. The first visit, our server came by immediately after we sat down and we ordered some drinks. She brought them out in less than a minute and wanted to know if we were ready to order. I told her it was our first visit and we needed a few minutes to look over the extensive menu. She came back about a minute later and impatiently asked if we were ready to order yet. I hadn't quite decided, but just picked something at random because she seemed really annoyed. My husband did the same. The food came out pretty fast after that, but it was just okay. It was all rather bland, and everything was covered in a flavorless brown sauce. Meh. Our server stopped by our table every few minutes to ask if we needed anything after that. It was obnoxious, and it was impossible for my husband and I to hold a conversation because we were constantly being interrupted by our server. Seriously, she stopped by our table more than a dozen times in the 30-ish minutes we were there. A few weeks later, we decided to try again because a lot of people really seem to like this place. This time, we waited for several minutes to even be acknowledged by our server, and it seemed like she kept forgetting about us. She would disappear for several minutes at a time, and then ask us if we needed anything, even before we placed our orders. We reminded her that we were waiting for chips and salsa, we reminded her that we were waiting for drinks, we reminded her that we were waiting for our food. We waited almost 45 minutes for food after she finally took our orders. By that time, I needed a refill on my drink but she disappeared after she took my glass. I never did get that refill. My husband was supposed to have some tortillas on the side of his meal, but he finally gave up waiting for her to come back because his food was getting cold. He never did get those tortillas. We were off in a side room and couldn't see any other servers at all. After all that, the food just wasn't that good. The chicken inside my enchiladas was tough and dry, while the outside was soggy with way too much bland sauce, and definitely not worth the wait. I have NO idea why people love this place so much. The food we had was below average and the service we experienced was pretty bad. I don't think we will give it a third try.

We eat here at least twice a month. We usually have large crowds with us and always default to the plaza because they can always handle it. Top notch staff + amazing food consistently = repeat customers. I will continue to go to the Plaza during my tenure at Altus. Don't change a thing.

There were a lot of choices. I ordered the tacos locos. Service was great. Our waitress worked really hard to make sure we had everything we wanted. Kept checking with us without being obnoxious.

Since they have moved its gone the way of most eateries in Altus. The wait staff isn't near as good as they were prior to the move, just not as attentive. The food is now hit or miss. It is still the best place to go for Mexican in Altus. Eat here before Applebee's!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
