Update: got the fish tacos as a carryout lunch and was disappointed due to them not having any sauce on them. They were fish in tortillas only. I added the lettuce and tomatoes that were in the container. Perhaps if I had them via dine-in, I would be able to request sauce.

I'm very disappointed in My service today! They set and watch me eat and laugh too! I had to ask them to bring chips! Will not be back

Used to be our go to Mexican place but the service has become very poor. Will go back when I'm desperate but for now, there are too many other Mexican restaurants in the area to settle for this. Adios!

Nice interior and intriguing tables with artwork. Agave is Hidden Lotus plus Ganja Cactus Rosin. Guacamole looked very popular here.

Very nice staff but horribly bland food and extremely over priced. I feel like they don't have a clue how to make good, authentic Mexican food. The chicken they put in their tacos and burritos is absolutely horrible and a huge rip off. It's 70% onions and other veggies. And sadly, im not even exagerating. Very uncool that they make their chicken that way. Good margaritas though.

Ok service but food is lacking. For the price the portions were very small. There are several other mexican places around this vicinity that I'll will try. Probably won't go back to this one...

We went on Mother's Day and there was no wait. It was a nice environment and everybody was friendly. Our waiter was a little slow with refills, but he might have been new. I wish I could've had a margarita. They looked really good. I will be back.

Tried this place out bc my wife and I wanted something new. Service was good but the food was just ok. Not the wrist we have had but not that impressive.

Typical AmeriMexican food. But the guacamole here is awesome and I hated guacamole until today.

The wait staff were friendly, but not very on top of the job. We asked the server what was good and she left us even more confused than we started with.We had empty cocktails that were never asked to be refilled. I ordered the chicken fajitas, which I could have made better at home. My husband was done with his meal by the time I got my tortillas by then my food was cold. Yes cold fajitas. So I would not recommend this facility.

I have a client who LOVES this place and so they get my money about once a month. If it weren't for my client, it'd be more like once a quarter. They're unique in that they offer three different kinds of salsa to go with your complimentary chips. And the servers here are accommodating in every way. But if I could have it my way, there'd be more to the atmosphere. And more to the food. For Mexican, it is definitely under seasoned.

We have eaten at BA around 6 times and well we won't be for a very long time after our experience on 4.24.15 , if at all. First as other reviewers have pointed out there is a group of servers that just stand around in a group chit chatting and are not serving customers during a busy Friday at happy hour? We were seating promptly and received chips right away but then no server. The chips were fine with three choices of salsa but were not chunky but very runny. When the server did show up it was obvious that he was not at all experienced at serving. We ordered a pitcher of Margeritas with Patron which at happy hour was $17.77 with a $5 up charge for the Patron. He asked us if we wanted sugar on the rim of the glasses. Really? Next we saw him behind the bar mixing it up. Oh boy, we are in trouble. When he brought it to our table it didn't even taste like a Margerita. We talked and drank the drinks and finished the pitcher before we ate and didnt even get a hint of a buzz from it. It taseted more like a kids fruit drink. We then ordered water. The food was ok for the most part but the rice was bland and a very small portion and the retried beans were also very small portion. Also the food is very over priced as compared to other Mexican food restaurants and we have gone to many in the area. Our total bill for three people all in including guacomole and one other drink(beer) was over $92.00. I would expect great food and great service for that kind of price. The price for the pitcher was $37.77. That's right. $37.77. When asked the waiter claimed that he put the wrong premium tequila in the pitcherthat costs even more and charged it per shot and even though he got it wrong we were expected to pay for it. This was a bad experience for us and will probably not go back again.

Salad had very little lettuce. Odd. It really wasn't a salad at all. Beef for enchiladas is like chili beef. Too much tomato, not enough seasoning. Unimpressed!

As far as any Mexican restaurant I've visited this is pretty solid. I love their salsas that come out with their chips. Staff is always polite and, 90% of the time I've been there...attentive and quick. Mexican food all rather seems the same. Nothing has necessarily has blown me away per-say but my food always comes out hot, fresh and accurate so I can't complain. They have a nice patio for summer sun soaking and since I go usually at lunch, I've yet to try their margaritas. One of these days. If you're craving decent mexican food with good service, hit this place up. :)

Terrible service. Forgotten food, drinks... And the management is not without blame, either. They have signs on the tables for happy hour specials that are no longer available. I understand that things change, but how long would it take to remove the signs from the tables? 4 minutes? This is the 2nd time this happened on a visit here. The food is good, and the table side guacamole is delish. But they need to get it together. They were not busy at all when we visited at 6:30pm.

Whenever I read bad reviews I always give the benefit of the doubt to the business. I figure everyone has bad days, and good food can cover a multitude of sins. I went here on a Friday and had a chimichanga plate. The rice was bland and room temp, but it served its only purpose of helping sop up beans and sauce. The chimichangas were delicious and I would only go back for those. The guacamole was the best I've ever had, and the salsa was perfect. The decor and location is great too. Now, let's talk about what everyone else is talking about: the service. Yep, all the other reviews are not lying. The service here is bad. Not because of rude customer service, but because of bad training and management. I saw no less than 5 staffers standing around chit chatting while one kid, ONE, was working 15 tables. Maybe that kid pissed off the manager or something, I don't know. All I know is it took him forever to remember us and take our order after drinks, and then to remember to bring our credit cards back at the end. I'm no expert at restaurant management, but I am an expert in avoiding identity theft, and letting 7 different table's credit cards sit on a counter by the front door for 20 minutes, face up no less, is a big no-no. Once you take someone's card, you swipe, print, and bring it straight back. This is basic. Eventually we tired of waiting and just went up to the register to sign ourselves. Kinda awkward tipping in front of the kid and the manager. The chat crew by the bar was still going strong when we left, nice how they don't have to help out during busy hours! Might see if I can get hired on!

Chips and salsa are fresh and good. That's about it. Mediocre drinks with very little to recommend them. Food gives Tex-Mex a bad name. Not recommended at all. Wait staff is not up to the task, either.

A few of us from work checked out The Blue Agave for lunch last week. It's an above-average Mexican restaurant in Polaris. The restaurant interior and exterior are clean and well-maintained. The staff is friendly and polite. They have complimentary chips and with 3 different types of salsa. I guess that's pretty standard. They also have some good lunch specials Monday - Friday that cater to the business lunch crowd. I think 6 different items (enchiladas, burritos, quesadillas) that are $5.99 which include two sides (choice of rice, salad, black beans, fried beans). My beef burrito was tasty without being overly heavy or greasy. The side salad was also pretty fresh. All in all a decent Mexican option in the Polaris area, especially for a work lunch.

My husband and I ordered to go. I ordered the taco salad with grilled chicken and my husband ordered a chicken & steak fajita. My husband did not check the bag to make sure all our food was there when he picked our order up.. considering the restaurant is supposed to do that. Once we got home he had realized they did not put any tortillas wraps. He was upset about it. He had to eat his meal with the chips. My taco salad was pretty decent... the chicken did not have a flavorful taste and they did not dice up my tomatoes like i specifically asked them to do. I will not be ordering from here ever again!

I work near by so we go there for happy hour often. I wish we didn't. Their draft beer is always warm. If they didn't serve it in a frosty mug it would be room temperate. They really should fix their system. Overall their drinks seem overpriced.

It's been a little over a year since my last visit to the The Blue Agave and I was interested in giving it another try. The food and service were both very good and in most cases would have rated 4 stars. However, 3 factors keep me from giving The Blue Agave a higher rating. First - the restaurant is EXTREMELY LOUD. In fact, it was so noisy that our party of six had trouble conversing over dinner. I could understand that a larger party might not expect for everyone to be able to talk to each other but - really - when a party of six can't be heard around the table, it's way too noisy. Two - the restaurant lacks any interior ambiance - which is a major contributing factor to the noise level. It's a large rectangular room with a hard ceiling (in fact, most of the ceiling is the metal roof deck), a hard floor and mostly hard wall surfaces - nothing to damper the noise. The final factor that keeps this from a 4-star rating is their salsa. The tortilla chips were excellent and are served with 3 kinds of salsa. However, the salsa is so thin and watery that it's hard to get (and keep) any on your chips. The tortillas were almost better without trying the salsa. I'd suggest concentrating on 1 variety of salsa and trying to get that right. NOW FOR THE GOOD NEWS. We were there on a Friday night and the restaurant was busy / the staff was hustling. Despite how busy the restaurant was - the service was very good. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and was able to make some good recommendations for dinner. Service was very attentive and prompt without the feeling that the waiter was intrusive. Everyone in our party enjoyed dinner. One of my personal favorites at any Mexican restaurant is the chimichanga and I was prepared to order the Chimichangas Suprema which is the traditional - 1 chicken and 1 beef - when the waiter recommended the Chimichanga Grande which included shrimp, steak and chicken along with bell peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms and onions all in 1 large chimichanga. It was exceptionally good. SO -- overall -- food and service are very good if you can tolerate the noisy environment and if you're not into salsa with your tortilla chips.

This place is an upgrade from the El Vaquero. As a vegan, I was able to find a good dish (one of the many veggie burritos with fresh avacado) and got the vegan black beans instead of the rice that was made with chicken stock. The burrito was really good, but the sides were pretty meh. The burrito is the reason I would go back again. Word to the wise: don't waste your money on the mixed drinks. I got a happy hour priced "sangria" and it was disgusting. It tasted like the really sugary grocery store drink mix with some wine added in. It was sweeter than juice - I wasted $3 on it. I wouldn't trust any beverage besides beer because they can't really screw that up. And be prepared for a GUACAMOLE CART to come around to solicit your business. The waiter asked and when we said no guac, the woman with the guac cart still came out and batted her eyelashes to tempt us into buying. When we said "no" again, she seemed sad and left. Just be prepared for that...

I went to Blue Agave for lunch today, and all the food was exceptionally great! We started with very fresh guacamole prepared table side and it was the best I've ever had!! I had steak chimichanga and my girlfriend had chicken chimichanga. We had our our three kids with us and one had chic fingers( average). One had chicken chimichanga and the other a bit more adventurous "Monterey Goat". I sampled all but chicken fingers. The Goat dish was very, very good and my first time having that meat. It came in a thin mildly spicy broth. Again,If you like guacamole, get it here and dip tortilla chips in it. No room for dessert because I couldn't stop eating chips and salsa. Lol Going again soon. 5 stars!!!

The atmosphere is warm and open. Decent energy in the place clean. The food is very average. They make guacamole at your table, which is fun...our avocados could have been ripened a bit. The salsa is pretty bad. It is so watered down that it doesn't have flavor and it won't stay on your chip. Might make sense to focus on making one good salsa instead of 3 terrible ones. My entree was the fish tacos. The fish was bland and inconsistent. One taco had a giant piece of fish, another taco barely had any. The sauce the put on the side is also pretty bad. It tastes like salty mayonnaise. The black beans were also very watered down and flavorless. The service was a bit odd. It wasn't that busy...yet the pace was over the top. They get you in and out so fast, the skip asking if you need anything else. Drinks and dessert for example. Nobody asked if we wanted additional drinks or dessert. The food was also out in like 2 minutes. How fresh can the food be if it's prepared that fast. Overall...not much flavor or spice for a Mexican restaurant.

Impressed by my first visit. The guacamole really is as good as they say, the salsa plates have some nice variety (I thought the salsa verde was quite good), and my chuletas were a nice smoky savory taste - almost like really thick bacon. I also really liked the combination of pinto beans and pico de gallo. It's still on the tex-mex side of things, but there's at least a bit more experimentation - the vegetarian avocado burrito actually looked pretty interesting. There's a pretty wide selection (I may have to try the ceviche next time I come in) and the dessert offerings looked impressive. Service was VERY fast and attentive - the only knock I'd give was that we brought in a coupon that wasn't actually applied to the meal despite handing it to the server with our payment.

Arrived just before 5 on a Saturday with unseasonable nice weather out, so we weren't surprised to see just a few tables filled. The mojitos we ordered were terrible - no crushed mint, way too sweet, tasted like a ready-mix and were served in plastic water tumblers. One sip and we sent them back and skipped drinks. We did enjoy the chips and three kinds of salsa, and the guacamole was some of the best we've had in memory. I got a mole chicken dish that was good but the mole sauce could have been a little tangier, but when I complimented it with salsa, the flavors came out better. My GF's chicken/chorizo dish was very good - it's a nice combination worth trying. We were too full to stay for deserts but their menu is large, even for finishers. I'm not sure we'll go back as a destination visit, but I'd go if it was on the way. I just hope they pay more attention to proper drink quality next time!

I love Mexican food so I was really excited to come here after reading the reviews. I can tell you we wasted our $$-$50 for two adults and a toddler to eat without an alcoholic drink. The service was slow and we seemed to be bothering the waiter by being there. The salsa was super watery but the flavor was ok. All our food came out cold- like it had been sitting. My daughters cheese quesadilla didn't even have the cheese melted and my shrimp was cold. I alerted the waiter and he sighed and sent it back- when it came back it was obvious it was nuked in the microwave. My daughters cold quesadilla, some chewy rice and milk was $7.95 because only soda is included in the $5.95 kids meal? She's too little for pop. El Vaq is so much better. I wish I'd gone there.

I almost forgot sit-down Mexican restaurants exist. I don't think I'd been to one since the Chipotle/Qdoba/food truck invasion. But Blue Agave is worth revisiting. The dining room is wide open, and the modern interior is a lot more interesting than the standard kitsch of the typical Mexican place. As soon as we sat down, we were approached by a roving guacamole cart, who made us a mortar full of amazing guac tableside. I have never liked guacamole very much, but this stuff was scrumptious, and the maker let us customize it (extra cilantro!). For my entree, I had shrimp stuffed with cheese and wrapped with bacon, served with chipotle sauce. There were only seven of them and they were just one bite each, but I'm drooling right now thinking about how good they were. That was served with Spanish rice and black beans, but I substituted refried beans... they were fine, nothing special, but good. I didn't eat my rice... does anyone really like that stuff? I'd rather have plain white rice, to be honest. But overall, an excellent meal. The menu was large, as you might expect, but it seemed a lot more varied and less repetitive than your typical Mexican menu. There were some interesting meat choices such as goat and quail. I had a hard time choosing. Service was friendly and very attentive, and we left happy. We'll be back.

Love this place; we eat there at least once a week. The only downside is the communication barrier with most of the servers. It has caused errors on occasion, but the extensive menu is numbered. Just be careful with special requests. The complimentary chips and salsas are very fresh, and I highly recommend the #73 - Jose Special!

  • Laura B.

This is better than your average mexican joint. Their lunch prices are solid, and the three different salsas class it up. I have always had good service, and I have been here about 10 times varying dinner, lunch, workday, weekend. I'm a vegetarian, and their veggie dishes taste like they are fresh cut. Pretty big bar with nice tvs too.

This is our first time at The Blue Agave. We went early and www were seated immediately. By the time we lift, there was a 30 minute wait. The margaritas had more tequila than is typical in restaurants. If you want guacamole, they make it fresh at your table. The chips are fresh and tasty. Not too salty. You get three different kinds of salsa. None are heavy on tomatoes. They are also not overly hot so they meet the preferences of everyone at the table. The entrees were very good and reasonably priced. I recommend The Blue Agave. Well worth it.

This was our first time at the restaurant. My family and were very disappointed in the quality and flavor of the food. The fajita steak meat was tough and had little seasoning, the black beans were also lacking seasoning and were runny. The tortillas were just reheated flour tortillas they probably bought from Kroger. They serve mashed potatoes (how authentic) that although have some spice to them were nothing special and did not taste like real potatoes to me... the texture of them was a bit off. I was shocked to see them using mozzarella in the kids meals instead of true Mexican white cheeses (which were in other dishes). The "salsa" for the chips was decent but not chunky style. The service we received was also a little on the lacking side, he left many dishes on our table and didn't offer to remove extra glasses or plates until we were all done eating. We will not be returning to here since there are many better choices in the Columbus area to get true Mexican food from.

This was my first visit to the Blue Agave and I went with two other people. Of the three of us, the only positive comment about the food was that it "wasn't bad". The ground beef tastes a lot like it has Ortega seasoning from the grocery store. The Diabla Chicken smelled like it had buffalo sauce on it... The restaurant itself is really clean and we were seated quickly. The service was lacking. Our waiter only brought us drink refills after we flagged him down. It was the same way for more salsa. When you're at a Mexican restaurant getting really spicy food, more water is appreciated. In addition, they don't like when you ask if you can get your meal with something other than exactly what's on the menu.

Whoa man. Kind of a surprise on this one. I've driven by a bunch of times wondering how good the food was and based on the stars, I was thinking that maybe I wouldn't want to try it, but my son can be very persuasive and he wanted to go. Upon walking in I wasn't sure what to think. It's basically a big room with booths along the walls and tables in the middle with an L shaped bar at one side. The service was good and friendly, fast and accurate. The food was surprisingly different and delicious. I expected the same old same old, maybe with a twist here and there at inflated prices, but that's not what they're about. They start you off with 3 different salsas. One roasted, one red and one green. They were all pretty good, but I am partial to tomatillos, so I went for that one and they know what they're doing. I was a little disappointed by their lack of ceviche on the menu, but I'm glad they didn't have it because their guac is fantastic. They actually make it right there for you. It's like 6 or 7 bucks, but you get a huge bowl, made right in front of you. They cut and peel the avocado, mash it, ask if you want cilantro, jalapeno, onion or tomato, and hand it over. Pretty fresh and tasty stuff. So on to the main course. I was very happily surprised to see goat on the menu so I ordered it. My friend ordered some sort of pork. I was blown away by my goat and I felt like it was something I would get from one of those authentic Mexican restaurants on the west side, except it was a little higher quality, I didn't question whether I would be praying to the porcelain gods later on, and my car also didn't get broken into. My god that sauce with it was amazing. Absolutely spectacular, and my friend even took some of it home to put over her left overs. Her pork was also amazing. It was tender and juicy and was almost like a nice lamb shank. They had so many other great looking things on the menu including a very home made looking xangos which I really can't wait to try. I can't wait to come back.

I don't even know where to begin. Our server took our order (four people), and had to come back twice to ask additional questions. Then, apparently, she only put in two of the orders at our table (party of four). Those two came out, both wrong. Then, the second two orders came out about 20 minutes later, again, both wrong, but we were so starving at that point that we just ate it. Of course, then the bills took about 20 minutes and again, they were all wrong. Additionally, she never refilled our beverages the entire 1.5 hours we were there. Longest lunch ever!

This is just a really good place to eat, and spend time with friends and family. The table-side-made guacamole is fabulous. The trio of salsas is a nice touch too. And, I love the avocado and poblano burrito. The restaurant is nice, the prices are good, and the food is delicious. I see some folks have complained about the service, but we've always had great service too.

  • Justin B.

The menu is disappointingly humdrum Mexican-American, but it's reasonably well done. I enjoyed my huevos con chorizo. The tortillas were agreeable, as was the guacamole we supplemented to the perfunctory chips and salsa. Seriously, would someone (other than a taco truck owner) take a chance with real Mexican food?

We went early on a Saturday night and were seated right away. It is a noisy room - and is popular with families, so a few shrieks and a bit of crying should be expected. As a new place, service is a but spotty - but I am hopeful that it will improve as routines are established. The food was good (not outstanding, but good). In addition to the standard combinations, the special I had (Carnes Colorado) was good. It would have been better if it was allowed to simmer a bit longer and if the tortillas were made fresh. Regardless, it was done fairly well. Overall - it is worth a try. Just be aware of the noise issues and be prepared for some routine Mexican options. I personally like Cantina Laredo a bit more - but Blue Agave is not a bad option.

  • Roger Y.

The positives, food was served piping hot and very good. Prices were fair. The negatives were the noisy large room atmosphere and long black hair laying atop the dish of green salsa. The waitress removed the salsa from our table and said she would advise manager. I understand these kind of things can happen very easily BUT, we not only did not receive a visit from the manager but we never got our salsa back after our waitress removed it. Doubt if we return.

Id rank this 2nd best Mexican restaurant in Columbus, behind Cuco's but better than El Vaquero. They have a nice bar with big screens for anyone trying to catch a weekend game. Service is good and this is a good place to catch a quick lunch.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
