Diabetics at Pizza Hut

Pizza is neither a great meal nor the worst for diabetes. All you need is some fact check and monitoring while ordering your pizza. Diabetics can opt for thin crust or skinny pizza at Pizza Hut and avoid the cheese topping to cut down on the excess fat and sodium. If you have diabetes, then ensure to check your portion size when you order a pizza. One or max. two slices are enough. You can also avoid meat if possible and go for wings as a meat option.

Foods to Avoid at Pizza Hut for Diabetics:

You must avoid Meat Lovers Pizza with Original Pan Crust as it contains over 1000mg sodium and will add 470 calories in your meal. You should also skip Super Supreme Pizza Large Original Pan Slice which is too high in sodium and fat. Chicken wings are often tempting but you must control and restrict yourself from ordering Traditional Honey BBQ Bone-in Wings as it can add up to your sugar levels if you eat too many. On average, a person orders or consumes six chicken wings pieces in a day.

Sides must be avoided at all costs especially if it's Bacon Cheddar Fries with Ranch Dipping Cup for its high sodium content. You must also avoid New York Style Cheesecake with Applesauce as dessert as one slice of this dessert item contains 86g sugar. Pizza Hut also offers other Italian dishes such as Pasta. However, you must skip Spaghetti with Meat Sauce and Meatballs and Garlic Bread as it is too high in sodium and sugar.

You can also try pasta at Pizza Hut but ensure that you are not adding any dressing or extra cheese as you order pasta.

Eh.. it was alright. I've been here twice and I find it kind of expensive (I guess that's the nature of the time and effort of deep dish pizza, you really can't rate it higher than 3 stars when comparing it to things equally priced unless you feel like deep dish pizza is essential to your well-being). Ranch dressing was pretty good (I think that that is important too haha). Nothing amazing though, seriously.

This is some great deep-dish pizza, the Service was good too, hard to complain Drinks were a bit expensive, The meat lovers is Awesome, i recommend it, If i' m downtown anytime soon, will revisit

Awful experience. The waiter forgot to put our pizza order in. After 90 minutes of waiting, we asked how much longer and he said he didnt have an order for us. We didnt get an apology or anything. Will never go back!

I give this a 4 star for the pizza, but two stars for the service. We had the thin crust VIP and it was delicious. Our waiter was very poor and the wait time for everything was too long. 5 minutes to get water, more time to get drinks and place and order, no refills of drinks, slow to get the check. Also, the greeters never said hello or goodbye.

If you have a craving for Chicago deep dish while in Toledo this is the closest you can get. Pizza Papalis has both deep dish and thin crust pizza. I've eaten both but unless you are in a hurry, I'd stick with the deep dish pizza. The deep dish takes at least a half hour to make so its a bad idea if you are starving and need to eat RIGHT NOW. I haven't been wowed by any of the appetizers but when I'm starving and waiting for my pizza I tend to order them. I like the veggie deep dish or the plain cheese deep dish (with the addition of green olives and mushrooms if anyone else is willing) All the vegetables are very fresh, in fact they come from the local company Okun Produce right across the street. Major points for using a local produce company!!! If you are by yourself, or not in the mood for pizza another great option is the cazones. I'm not an experienced calzone eater by any means but my limited palate finds these rather tasty.

Definitely a fun place to go after Mud Hens and Walleye games. The atmosphere is fun and it makes you feel like part of a real downtown environment. In the warmer months, you can always find a live musical performer in the bar section downstairs. The best deal on the menu is the calzone for about $8. You can pick from a few recipes or add your own meats and veggies to perfect your own calzone. Pizzas are good too, but if you're dining in, they take awhile to make, and the deep dishes take even longer. Any of the above are worth the wait. Service has always been really good. I've been a part of a few parties over the years with 10 or more people and I can't say that service ever dropped off. Check it out after the 9th inning or 3rd period and enjoy!

Very crowded and busy due to a great location downtown. The pizza and service was not impressive. Nice building with a ton of tables. We just felt like we were taking a number and being pushed through the system. Just ok

The worst experience! My birthday and had family from all over ohio meet here on a Saturday evening. I called 4 days ahead. NO ONE suggested we preorder our pizzas. It was obvious everyone else knew this secret. So even though we had a reservation, we waited more than an hour for our pizzas. Most of it had to be boxed because we had to get to a high school play off game. Management, and server were not helpful. We highly recommend no one go to this pizza hell hole. There are places where everyone is treated the same. We were not the only unhappy people in this place. It mattered if you knew their secret about ordering. Very unfair to those of us from out of town! In fact the tables around us who knew the secret that while you are waiting you order your deep dish pie so it's ready when you are seated enjoyed our misery.

Location: The location is great if you're downtown for an event. They have an upstairs with excellent window seating and second-level balcony that is open when the weather is nice. Try to get seated on the second floor! Food: Meh, the food is OK. We usually get a thin crusted pizza and it's good, but there are definitely better pizza places in the area. I once ordered pasta and I highly recommend that you STAY AWAY from it. It was so bad that I had to send it back. The service: It's been hit-or-miss for us. We either have good service or sort of slow service. We've never had horrible service but let's just say they have room to improve.

I was visiting Toledo for a couple weeks and this just may have been my highlight!!! I didnt have to go to Chicago for some gooooood deep dish! Honestly, the last time i had pizza like this was in Chicago. Props to this place on keeping it original! And lets not forget the best part!!!!!....ICE COLD beer in ICE COLD (and i mean frosty) mugs!!!!! Great prices too!

  • Pat S.

Good Chicago pizza but not great. Has a loooong way to go before even approaching a Lou Malnati's or Ginos. It was a good way to get that Chicago style without having to travel the extra 400 miles to get there. Was not very crowded on a weekday at lunchtime, but probably had more to do with the gale force winds than the food. Pizza seemed a little pricey, but one or two slices can more than fill you so even if you bought a large, you would end up with a second or third meal out of it.

I had a Calzone here and it was soggy. I have yet to try their deep dish, so I may be back to give this place another chance.

We ordered 3 deep dish pizzas, 2 were rock hard on the bottom and severely undercooked on the top, and mine was burnt on half and raw on the other half. It is definitely not a place to take a toddler, as we were had to wait over an hour to receive our pizzas. The breadsticks were also terrible. It was like a rolled up biscuit with only a little bit of parmasean sprinkled on the middle. I will never return to Pizza Papalis.

  • Aaron G.

I did have dinner here once again and this time the meal was much better. If you want a pizza, get the thin crust and do not order the deep dish. The thin crust was prepared much better and you can see the toppings on it. The service is still good and the restaurant is children friendly.

If you've been to chicago and ever had authentic chicago deep dish pizza, you know that this place should change their branding. The pizza is deep, but the dough was tough to cut though on the exterior and an undercooked soggy mess on the interior. the tomato sauce was really watery without much flavor and the cheese was tough and rubbery very quickly without much cooling. We got aseveral veggies on our deep dish pizza, but we mostly got cheese and just a couple of olives, green peppers, jalapenos and onions over the top, visible before cutting into it. the interior was all cheese with no obvious veggies, nor did we find any upon eating it. Our bill was nearly $40 with no appetizers and 2 fountain drinks. Our waiter took our order within 10 minutes of being seated. another 15 to get our 2 fountain drinks and 3 waters. And another 65 minutes to get our deep dish pizza. the place seemed to be loaded with staff, but no one seemed to be working, only chitchatting with each other. We went there at 5pm on a saturday, recently and the place had about half the tables on the first floor empty. the bar was packed, but the upstairs didn't appear to have any guests (at least we couldn't see them before entering the building). I'm not sure that I'd go there again for a deep dish pizza. The atmosphere is sport's bar with televisions and neon lights. We sat at a comfortable booth, but we (there were 3 of us) could just bearly hear each other and had to shout. It was incredibly noisy, even though the seating was maxed out.

My co-workers and I make Pizza Papalis a regular stop in our downtown lunch rotation. We don't generally have time for a deep-dish pizza (although we could call ahead and have one ready when we arrive), but we've all tried multiple menu items and have enjoyed them. Stromboli, calzone, thin-crust pizza, philly steak or chicken sub, any of the personal-size flatbread pizzas... no complaints. We've only ever had one bad experience there (a hair baked into a Spicy Chicken Stromboli), and the staff made it right by comping my co-worker's meal AND giving him a $10 gift card for his next visit. The staff are generally friendly and relatively quick, and attentive without being annoyingly so. The quality and price of the food are what keeps us coming back, though.

Meh...it's just ok. I'm not a deep dish pizza fan, but others in my dining group are. The deep dish pizzas take at least 45 minutes to bake, and your dining experience becomes a 3-hour tour. Their regular (thin) crust pizza is always too dry. Great location if you're coming downtown to a ball game or hockey game, but probably would never go there if I had nothing else to do downtown,

Thick crust pizza. The best this side of Chicago, not quite Giardano's, but nicer then the 5 hour drive.

The pizza is pretty good for deep dish. But they use a ridiculous amount of salt to get it to taste that way.

We stopped in for the Deep Dish and it was terrific. A medium was more then enough for 2. In fact I cant wait to dig in to the leftovers. A great pizza.

My friends and I -- severely deprived of artery clogging cheesy and meaty goodness -- stopped in Pizza Papalis, hoping to put an end in our quest for the best pizza in Toledo. Sure, it's a chain. Forget the fact that each slice is served with a generous side of Lipitor. Pizza Papalis serves its purpose quite well: shelling out 1.5 inch thick pies... err... pizzas. And that, [Toledo] Yelpers, is all that matters. Pizza Papalis is no Giordanos, but it's a reasonable facsimile of proper Chicago pizzas. I'm also not going to lie; my standards have lowered considerably upon moving to Toledo. The downside to this pizza chain is its wait time: 45 - 50 minutes for a deep dish pizza. Now, folks who know me will tell you that patience is not my virtue. But for these slices of heaven? I'll make it an exception. Unless you're keeling over from starvation the moment you enter Pizza Papalis, I would highly recommend skipping appetizers. The eight of us ordered a large deep dish VIP pizza, a large thin crust VIP pizza, a large thin crust spinach special pizza, and a small deep dish low fat cheese pizza. I'll give you one guess as to who ordered the last one. The grand total for the four aforementioned pizzas and seven sodas was an astronomical $91+, a new record for most expensive pizzas I've had to date. So, in addition to the long wait time, the prices are not exactly cheap. What makes this place worthwhile and the pies worth every penny, however, is the sheer fact that the makers do not skimp on the ingredients. A small deep dish does indeed feed 2-3 hungry folks. Half of my party walked away with enough leftovers for at least another meal. Mind you, my party consisted of six guys and two girls -- all with huge appetites. Additionally, the pizza crusts here are legendary. Thick, flaky, hearty, and laced with hints of cinnamon, it complements the big cheesy glob quite nicely. Lastly, my friends were unable to tell the difference between the low fat pizza and the regular pizza, since both tasted amazing to say the least. As a caveat, check the Mudhens game schedule prior to heading here. On a game night, you will not only be vying for parking spots but for parking spots at inflated rates too.

LOVE their pizza. I also really like the enclosed porch; love watching the Mud Hens there....great service. They will half bake their deep dish pizzas and have them ready for pick up for at home finishing :) For a "down town experience" along with a unique pizza, must go.

The best deep dish in this area. The take and bake option is great for the super busy days. Avoid Mud Hens home game nights if patience is not your thing.

Met up with some friends for a drink here the night before thanksgiving. Pretty much everything else was closed. Server was friendly, place was clean, good crowd but could still have a conversation, my beer was $1! Didn't eat but the pizza looked delicious. Will have to try when I'm in town again.

Slow, but worth it. Thin Pizza takes 35 minutes, deep dish 45. Delicious. Try the cookie! Kids can make their own pizza, but its hard to keep them busy for that long. Expect 1.5 to 2 hours total.

  • Benji J.

Let's start with the pizza. Authentic Chicago-style deep dish was very good. Crust was perfect, mozzerella was moist and sweet, tomato sauce could have been a little more robust (a bit more oregano or rosemary perhaps). Lots of TVs here to see a ball game. The Friday-Saturday live band, Gin Bunny, was better than expected rock cover band playing 70s eighties and 90s rock.

Now, I am a biased reviewer because I am employed there, but I believe I can write a review that actually is worth its salt more so than someone else because I know the quality and effort that is put into the food there. The pizza, at first glance of the menu, is a little pricey. However, the ingredients are incredible. We definitely do not skimp on any single product. Everything is made in house, including the salad dressings and the multitude of sauces. The ground beef has a fat ratio of something like 90/10. That in and of itself says a lot about the quality of food. The sausage is ground, not the frozen cubes you find at the majority of other pizza joints. We also make our own deep dish cookies and deep dish cheesecakes. They are absolutely amazing. When it comes to the dining experience, the process is ingenious. If there is a wait, you place your order, and then by the time you sit down at your table your food comes out right away or within 5 minutes. The table turnover is extremely high which is good for the business and for the customer. A small pizza can feed 2-3 people, a medium 4-5 and a large 6-7. Personally I am filled up with just 1 to 1 1/2 slices of deep dish pizza. The actual restaurant itself is very family friendly and the decor is sports bar oriented with lots of class. We have two floors, each of which has a bar with garage door style windows that we open up on the nicer days. Also, we have live music Thursday thru Saturday. Come in Monday thru Wednesday and domestic drafts are $1, and Wednesdays kids eat free.

The deep dish pizza is as good as it gets. The location and atmosphere is great!!! The deep dish takes about 45 mins to make but it's well worth the wait, besides who wants to just eat and leave. It adds a nice touch to Downtown toledo and I hope with the new arena more places will open up.

Let me get this off my chest right away: I don't like deep dish pizza. Never have. I've even had it in Chicago, still a no-go for me. As a wise man once said, "this sort of thing ain't my bag, baby." So this review is deep dish free. What's the point of going to a deep dish pizza joint if you don't like deep dish? Well, it turns out they have other stuff worth eating. I ordered a thin crust pepperoni (although others at the table did go for the deep dish). When my pizza first came out, I was worried. I'm never a big fan of round pizza that's been cut in squares; it's just a thing with me. Also it looked a bit like frozen supermarket pizza because the outer edge of the crust was small and rather weak looking. I prefer and nice doughy edge. I was distracted by conversation when the pizza had come, and I just absent-mindedly started eating. About halfway through my first piece I suddenly realized that the pizza was awesome. The sauce and pepperoni were good, but the cheese was amazing. It had top notch flavor and consistency. There was more cheesy goodness than there was crust (no joke!), and I loved every bite. At any other pizza place you would have to order double or even triple cheese to get that much cheese. At this point I have either grossed you out or whipped you into a ravenous lather. You either are a cheese lover or you aren't. This pizza is for cheese lovers. I was worried at first, but the pizza delivered. I still left the edge of the pizza crust on my plate, but who cares. (Incidentally, the crust under the cheese part was very good; no complaints.) I should also mention they have stuff other than pizza, but I didn't sample any of it. A table near us ordered salads that looked great as they were carried by our table. I was envious, but the pizza that followed eased my regret. Next time I'll probably get some salad though. Let's put a ribbon on this review and call it a day: Parking sucks, but what do you expect downtown? The atmosphere is great. Prices are bit expensive, but the pizzas can be split between more people than you'd think; they're filling. Service was very good. The food turned out to be great, despite my first impression. I'll be back.

Thin crust pizza is good...but wouldn't have had canadian bacon again because it was very salty.....but there is no skimping on the toppings. We dined on a Saturday night and live jazz music made for nice back drop even though the atmosphere is casual. Good service....will have to try thr deep dish pn another day...looks fabulous!

For my final Friday working downtown, I walked to Pizza Papalis for lunch. The restaurant was moderately busy when I arrived around just after noon, however I was pleasantly surprised to be seated straight away. Another pleasant surprise, was my table on the bar side of the first floor, with the windows up and the screens down, giving me unfettered access to the beautiful weather, sights, and sounds on North Huron Street! Glancing at the lunch menu, I selected the baked mostaccioli with meat sauce and an iced tea. Before tax and tip, my bill was $8.99, which feels like a really good price for lunch downtown. The downstairs bar section of the restaurant was attractively decorated with many signs showing the various libations available, and the granite top bar looked absolutely gorgeous! A couple of flat screen televisions hung from the walls, and were turned to different channels for the enjoyment of the patrons. Importantly, all had the closed captioning turned on, which was a nice touch. However for me, the best part of the restaurant was the fact that the 'outside wall' on my booth was just a floor-to-ceiling window screen. It almost felt like I was having lunch directly on the sidewalk on North Huron Street, but without all the sun! When it arrived, the baked mostaccioli was very good. The meat sauce had an excellent flavour, and the dish was baked with the perfect amount of mozzarella cheese! All too often pizzerias either go overboard with the cheese (which then melts into a nearly impermeable layer) or skimp on the cheese, but Pizza Papalis nailed it perfectly in the Goldilocks zone with just the right amount. I also appreciated how the waitress brought me several tea refills without me ever needing to ask. For good food at an equally good price, great service, and a fantastic atmosphere, I rate Pizza Papalis as Very Good, and will definitely be returning!

The atmosphere and the location are great. The pizza? Well... First off, the sauce is pretty good...I'll give 'em that. But pizza-wise, it's downhill from there. Their Chicago style pizza? Take a loaf of bread, throw some cheese on it, cover it with pizza sauce. Bake it for 45 minutes, and there ya go. The crust on their thin crust pizza? If it's not frozen I'll eat my hat. It's perfectly round, has a seem around the circumference, and breaks apart when you eat it. I might eat here if I'm with a group, or I might have a drink here (excellent bar staff), but if I want good pizza, there are about 25 places in Toledo where I'll go first.

These guys are wonderful! My son is in the USCG stationed in Toledo, I'm in California and I haven't had my son home for his birthday for four years. Today was his birthday and he was on duty for the weekend. I wanted to send him and his co-workers dinner. Amy at Pizza Papalis went above and beyond to help me get these guys some amazing food. We put together a Meat Eaters Deluxe Deep dish, a thin crust pepperoni, sodas and a Happy Birthday 10" deluxe deep dish Chocolate Chip Cookie. The guys loved it! They were blown away by how much food there was and I quote, they told me, "IT WAS AWESOME!!!!" This made my day and my son's! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

I'm cheesed. I would have given this place at least 3 stars for the tasty pizza and cool atmosphere if I wasn't so livid over how I was treated during my first and last visit to this restaurant. Two days ago we arrived at Pizza Papalis at 4:10 pm. The place was empty (at least on the first floor) other than one table. We were not greeted for nearly a minute and when a woman in glasses with the disposition of a funeral director finally acknowledged us, we got "3 today?" from at least 15 feet away. Now that's a small thing and we weren't put out by it, but nonetheless an unprofessional greeting deserves to be noted, especially since THAT was one of the higher points of this dining experience. We were seated and our server, Alyssa, greeted us promptly with a smile. She introduced herself, which I always appreciate. She noted the half eaten slice of pizza under the table we were sat at and was properly apologetic. We didn't mind at all (it happens) but we did move because the benches in the booths were just hard wood and very painful for me. (bad back) Alyssa did not return right away to see us move from the booth to the table next to us. When she did she told us that her manager thought we were a new table. That's about the only time we got from Alyssa. She took her time coming to get our order. She was distant but polite and over 5 minutes getting our drinks (3 sodas). We knew right away that we were going to share a plain cheese deep dish. Alyssa left our table with our order at 4:23. 18 minutes later she showed up and asked: "How is everything here?" It seemed odd since we had no appetizers and were just sitting there with nearly empty drinks. I am a server by trade so I know normally that visit is to pre-deliver drinks and give an eta. I said, now this is important, with a smile and politely, "We're the same but we'll let you know when we're eating." Alyssa immediately seemed pissed off and that was the END of our slow but friendly service. Apparently we are there to be hospitable to Alyssa, not the other way around. I say that as a server who is kind in the face of REAL abuse, what an entitled jerk. I asked Alyssa to get my son a refill. After all, wouldn't that be the reason for coming to a table with no food? 10 min later it appeared. When our pizza came to the table at 4:59, I asked for a refill for myself. Alyssa mumbled something as she bolted yet again, and my husband had to stop her and ask "Can I get one too?" She gave him an annoyed "sure". 12 minutes later my husband got his drink but mine never came. I was done eating. Alyssa, of course, seemed pissed at me when I asked if I could get my diet soda too. Somehow her poor service was just another thing I had done to her. It was several more minutes before my drink finally came and at this point, I was truly resentful that I was paying to be treated this way. I asked the back of Alyssa's retreating head if they had a dessert menu. She unceremoniously grabbed a small drink menu that had their one dessert on the back and plopped it down on top of the identical menu we already had on our table. 8 minutes later I saw a server setting up tables for a big party (the place was completely empty at this point). I apologized for bothering her but asked if she could ask Alyssa for a box and the bill. A few minutes later Alyssa silently put the box and the bill on the table. I said "Oh no. I didn't want dessert but thanks." She walked away in a huff. In closing, Pizza Papalis has excellent pizza, the best I have had in Toledo. It was cooked perfectly. The sauce was seasoned well without being too salty or too sweet. But dine there with this caveat, the staff at Pizza Papalis is lacking in humble pie.

Wow! 22 oz Stone IPA for $7. An amazing deal. Good filling and yummy pizza.

The wife wanted Chicago deep dish pizza as soon as we got to the Midwest. Toledo isn't Chicago, but the pizza was good. We ordered a deep dish medium with chicken on it. It was enormous, dense, and delicious. We had to take half of it home. We also ordered the breadsticks, which were fine. They came with a decent marinara sauce and a gross orange cheese sauce. They're on the side. You're going to need to order appetizers because the pizza takes about 45 minutes to cook. That's how long it takes to make right, so just get used to it. Parking is tough. There's a garage across the street that charged me $3 on a Sunday (not a game day), but we had to climb six flights of stairs after eating all that pizza. A decent beer selection, a friendly waitress, and a nice old fashioned pizzeria decor make this a place I'll come back to.

Pizza Papalis's Chicago-style pies are a relative rarity in the pizza world, and they're serious about making them that way. That said, there are some key elements that leave much to be desired. Pizza Papalis specializes in big, hearty, Chicago pizzas. Each of the pizzas my family ordered was several pounds, between the heavy sauce, the thick cheese, and the heavy crust. That said, I wouldn't call the sauce particularly memorable or rich (even though it tops the pizza!). For that matter, their crust leaves much to be desired. I can almost taste that it's cornmeal based, as it should be, but it still gets cardboard-ish in the end, with diminishing crunch and interior softness. Toppings are kind of bland, and not nearly as present as they should be. If this is hearty pizza, where's the meatiness and zesty flavors that belong in pepperoni and Italian sausage? The sauce, too, was lacking in both the sweetness and heat that I like, which was especially unfortunate, given how sauce-heavy Chicago pizza is. All of this said, it wasn't bad. I liked how well it held together, rather than collapsing off itself once cut like some kind of casserole. I liked how they meant "extra cheese" when they said "extra cheese." I also really appreciate how they held onto our pizzas and kept them piping hot for us despite us coming in nearly half an hour after closing (we'd called them to let them know and they said it was no trouble, but still, that was a lifesaver around 11:30 when my family was hungry and circumstances kept keeping us from leaving with time to spare. Pizza Papalis is decent stuff and can feed a hungry crowd, even later on in the evening. It's not great, but it's not bad, either. You can do a lot worse in Toledo, which is sadly lacking in truly great pizza joints.

Pete the bartender is AMAZING!!! He made our day!!! He put our bumper sticker up from where we are from. It's a bumper sticker from "hair of the dog" English pub from Palm Springs, Ca. It meant SO much to us. Come to find out, Pete also lived and worked in Palm Springs at one time and used to frequent that bar. Of course we all hit it off and we had a GREAT time!!! Next time we go there, I want to eat! We only did drinks! Anyhow, Pete really helped us have a great time and I hope that he's there again the next time we're in town!

I love this place. I recently visited my alma mater UT and had to come here before I went home. Their deep dish pizza is thie thing to get. It takes about 45 minutes to cook, so come prepared knowing what you want to eat. The pizzas are huge. Know that when they say the large feeds 4-5, it really means 5-6 unless you are REALLY hungry. The sauce is perfect and the crust gets a good crunch on it around the edges. What's better is its right next to Mudhens Stadium and perfect for gametime. There might be an element of nostalgia for me, but if you are in Toledo, its definitely worth your time to stop in and relax and get some deep dish.

Ate here for the 1 first time today (1-18-2015). Just okay pizza. My wife & I had the Chicago style meat lovers & our kids had a thin cheese & pepperoni. We also had fries, which were fine. This place is really nothing to brag about. Service & cleanliness were pretty good. Way over priced for their quality. Probably 2 trips in 1, our first & our last! :-(

Had the flaming cheese and was hoping for more. Pizza was good though but you can tell it is Chicago pie made in Toledo.

Winner of 2013 PizzaPalooza Judge's Choice Award. Great pizza to enjoy whether you're dining in or taking out. By far the most family friendly place around the stadium. They also deliver anywhere downtown during Mon-Sat.

We went here after an event at fifth third field and had a nice time. The meat lovers deep dish was really yummy. We ended up getting a large for 4 people and had lots of pizza left over because it was so filling. Make sure you understand the pizza takes 45 minutes. The waitress wasn't that great. Our drinks were empty most of the time we were there and she barely stopped by to check on us. I think if they improved their service I could have given them 4 stars but not its actually teetering on a 2 to 3 star restaurant.

  • Tona D.

Hands down my favorite pizza in the area! If we were in Chicago I might not be so generous with the stars but I'm not driving six hours for pie so here we go. It's all about the crust, so buttery and good, Love it! If you go big and get a Chicago it takes close to an hour to bake, not good if your there for a quick stop, but I've had all of their crust styles and haven't been disappointed. They usually have good craft beer, not a big selection, but good none the less. The servers and patrons are always friendly.

This is the go-to place for the masses for food before the game at the Mud Hen's stadium. This said, though, this is definitely not the place to go if you're in a hurry. Be fully prepared to wait an absolute minimum of 45 minutes for the deep dish pizzas. We've eaten here three times and the wait for deep dish has ranged from 45 minutes to 1.5hrs! To make the wait a bit better, however, you can pre-order your deep dish to get it started before you get to your table while the restaurant has a wait for tables. To also note, however, even if you are NOT getting deep dish, the food takes a very very long time to cook. We've never received cold food, however, so it seems like it's not a server issue. The food has really good flavor in general - our group hasn't gotten anything that has warranted a complaint. The deep dish pizza is definitely the best, however. If you're getting deep dish, you need to order at LEAST a size smaller than if you were ordering from Domino's because of the height size difference. Two people can easily be satisfied with a small, and a medium for two people is enough for leftovers for at least one more meal for both people. With that fact, however, the price is much higher than a medium Domino's (actually is more than a large at most places). The restaurant is split into two levels in an old warehouse building so it's a great kind of old-meets-new ambiance. It's really open and the lower portion has garage doors that can open to the outside (we've never been there when they have had them open, but it'd definitely be a really nice addition to dinner!) All in all, if you're a fan of deep dish pizza, or are questioning if you would like it or not, try it out - definitely worth it!

The food and drinks were good, but the service was horrible. Our waitress only checked on us every 35min. She was awful! We had a 5pm reservation and got right in, but it took her 10min to even notice we were there. With a different waitress I would've had a better time. (Stephanie in the upstairs)

Excellent Deep Dish! Shared the Cheeseburger Deep Dish with my son and was pleasantly surprised. Good service, good atmosphere. Be prepared to wait about a 1/2 for your deep dish to cook....get some appetizers. Wings were good.

I have only purchased the Chicago style deep dish pizza from Pizza Papalis. It's very good, crust is almost more of a pie crust than pizza.

I wanted to check this place out because I'd never had a Chicago style deep dish before. I gotta say, I was expecting better! Pizza Papalis pizza tastes okay, but that's about it. I wasn't very impressed. In fact, it tasted little better than most of the chain restaurants that litter the Toledo area. I do have to say it was very filling though, as thick as it was. Next time I want some pizza, I think I'll stick with a couple of other pizza places around town where I know I can get deliciousness in a regular pie with nicer sauce, fresher ingredients and an overall better flavor.

Thanksgiving Eve. One of the busiest pizza delivery days of the year. i worked in delivery pizza management for a few years in my 20's and I remember those nights well. I and my wife have even bought in to the tradition and have had pizza on that night for over twenty years. We just moved up from Florida after 22 years there and found a place downtown in the warehouse district. This year, we thought we would check out one of our downtown neighbors instead of getting the delivery. We went early. About 5pm. We had been here one time before: Last December when we were visiting for the holidays and wound up attending the Jeff Dunham show. That night we had 8 people and the place was packed. We did the preorder thing and grabbed drinks while we waited for a table. We got a table after about an hour and our pizzas showed up about 20 minutes later. We got a mix of Deep and thin crust. I love a good Chicago Style Deep Dish, but was a little disappointed by this one. Not much flavor in the dough and it was a little dense and tough. The thin crust was made from WAY over-proofed dough. Trust me. I have over four years of management in pizza with Dominos and Marcos and worked for two years for the busiest pizza delivery restaurant of New York Style Pizza in Fort Lauderadale. I know the signs of old dough. It was a busy night, so I was a little forgiving. I was also hungry and even bad pizza is a nice meal. Great company, a terrific show later. It was a good night all in all. This past experience was different on a couple of levels. First, we walked in and there were two other tables that were already eating. Second, our order was not going to include Deep Dish. SWMBO does not like it and I did not care for their version last time. We ordered a medium thin crust with Pepperoni and Green Olive. We were told it would take 25 minutes. After the waitress left, my wife asks if pizza should take that long. She said "I mean, there is no one here that isn't already eating except us." I tell her, no. That order should take 10 minutes tops from ticket in the window to pie out of the oven. I mean hand tossed from a dough ball to cut in a pan. But, what the heck. We could just enjoy our time alone to talk. Drinks were not filled expeditiously. Again, not really crowded. One more table was seated during our wait and one came as we finally got our pie. 29 minutes. Yes, i timed it. It was a nice looking pizza. Good topping distribution. Sauce is nicely flavored and not heavy handed and the cheese was just right. The crust was thin and crispy/airy. It held up to the toppings well and did not droop under pressure. Of course, it was cut Chicago-style, so I don't know how a real slice would have held up. The problem was, again, the crust. It tasted like a low-salt Saltine cracker. There really needs to be a little more salt in that dough. maybe a little more sugar too. It really was like flour, oil and water. Even the yeast didn't make much of a difference in the flavor. We may go again. its a short walk from home and I would like to support the businesses in my district. BUT, I would like to be getting a good meal. I like the pizza a block away at Cock and Bull and a friend suggested Home Slice. We'll see how this pans out (Seriously, pun not intended).

I love the Pop, as we call it. Yes, it takes some time to get your pie. No, it isn't as good as Gino's in Chicago. But it is really good and I've always gotten great friendly service. When in T town, this is where we go.

I wish I could give this place 3.5 stars. I don't think it's quite a four, but it's not really a 3. We went to Pizza Papalis before a Walleye game and it was busy, as expected. We waited around 20 minutes, which is what they said we would. We preordered our pizza, which was great because if anyone knows about dining with a baby and a 3 year old, waiting is not their forte. The waitress was awesome. I wish I could remember her name because I'd call her out. She was attentive, friendly and great with our kids. She gets 5 stars. The pizza was alright. I am going to be a tad bias... We go to Chicago a couple of times a year and get pizza. This is pretty good pizza, but I have to admit, I was jealous of the people that got the thin crust. That looked amazing. Our pizza wasn't piping hot, which was good for my 3 year old. It seemed a tiny bit soggy in the middle. I think next time we will order the thin crust. However, I'd definitely come back!

Great Chicago style pizza for the area. Be warned though, the wait for your food is looooong when dining in.

Great pizza. I love the single deep dish they have at lunch time. The pizza is better than any deep dish I have had in Chicago. Two pieces of their pizza is enough to fill you up. If you go at lunch time and order off the lunch menu it's pretty fast, but if you go at night allow over half an hour to get your food since the pizza takes a long time to bake seeing the thickness of the crust and how much cheese there is on one. Something we like to do when we go there after a game is to place an order in the 8th inning and by the time the game is over and we walk over the pizza is almost ready. I wish they still had their place at DTW airport

I'm sorry, I've REALLY tried to get on the Papalis train. I have. But it's just ok to me. I know to be prepared for a long wait to get the traditional deep dish ( like 45 mins) but the product that comes doesn't really blow my mind. The atmosphere is nice and since it's near the ballpark makes a nice option to pop into before or after Mud Hens games and they have a fair selection of beer. But, our waitress was not great at all. We had empty drinks numerous times throughout the meal and she stopped by maybe twice to check on us.

The people knocking this place are complete morons. Is it as good as the places in Chicago? Hell No!! Is it the best deep dish anywhere in a 50 mile radius by a long shot? Hell Yes!! In my opinion, the BEST pizza in the city.

    (4)
  • Nelson R.

It's the closest thing you will get to true Chicago style deep dish in this area but that is not saying much being that there are no other options. It's just ok. Nothing special about it. It doesn't come close to Lou Malnati's or Gino's in Chicago. If this place was actually in Chicago it wouldn't make it. There is just not enough flavor in their pizza sauce. The crust is hit or miss. Someone times it's too hard to even get through. This place will hold you over if you won't be in Chicago for a while to satisfy your cravings but just barely.

No more having to drive to Chicago for deep dish pizza. When I heard that Pizza Papalis had deep dish pizza, I was excited but at the same time a little skeptical. Real chicago style deep dish pizza in Toledo? I had the VIP with sausage added on it and it was delish! It's stuffed with toppings. And the cheese- ahhh, gooey and delicious! And the portions are huge! One drawback is the wait- it wasn't busy at all (we were one of 2 tables there) and our pizza took 30-40 minutes. The good thing is that you can call in ahead of time. Great place to get a pizza, especially before/after a baseball game! I'll definitely be visiting there more often in the summer.

Our server was great, quickly realizing we were in town for a conference and explained the menu and baking times for us. Since we were in any rush, we went for the deep dish pizza and having had Chicago pizza, I'd say this is a pretty good version. We also got the flaming cheese because we were intrigued, but it was a block of cheese that became more solid as it cooled - neat but not the best-looking appetizer. If I ever find myself in Toledo again, I would return!

  • PizzaPapalis serves Chicago-style deep dish pizza. You can also order a thin crust or pan pizza, but why would you? My favorite is the Papalis Gourmet, but swap out the black olives for green ones! The spinach pizza with a blend of three cheeses is also an excellent choice. In addition to pizza, the menu includes calzones, flatbread sandwiches, pasta, stombolis, subs, soups and salads. I can also confirm that the breadsticks are pretty good. Before Toledo Walleye hockey games, the place is a madhouse. But, the restaurant lets you place your pizza order while you wait for a table to open. If you come during a busy time, I suggest you take advantage of the pre-ordering. It really helps move things along, especially if you are trying to make it to a concert or Walleye game at the Huntington Center, located about one block away. I imagine PizzaPapalis is equally busy prior to Toledo Mud Hens baseball games, as those games take place right next door at Fifth Third Field. Parking is available on the street or in a parking garage across the street from the restaurant.

I'm not usually a fan of Chicago style pizza but this place is alright. I really prefer Homeslice's pizza over this but hey; that's my opinion. The waitress was friendly and helpful, the pizza was tasty and the atmosphere was quiet and peaceful. Overall, its not a 5/5 restaurant but it doesn't settle for anything less than a 4/5.

Delicious!!! Deep dish is the way to go! True Chicago style :) The cheesy bread is a must have and is the best I've ever had! Service was great!! We were the only table at the time we ordered, so our food came out really fast. We planned on ordering one of their giant cookies for dessert, but we were too full. I'll have to get one next time!

The pizza is deep and good, keep in mind that it takes longer to cook. Don't expect this to be a quick pizza pie if you're short on time. But it is worth the wait. Order some breadsticks and have a few beers. They have a good IPA selection!

  • Dustin H.

PizzaPapalis brings families out for dinner downtown. After a ball game, your options are mostly sports-bars and I think the family friendly atmosphere is really great. The food is authentic as Toledo will get to Chicago style pizza, and they are pretty efficient on getting orders out in a timely manner. I just picked up two calzones and would say avoid hot to-go items that get packed in styrofoam. The food tasted terrific, but by the time I got home everything had steamed up and gotten soggy. Next time I'll just do a to-go pizza, which I know is great! :)

Pizza Papalis is absolutely my favorite pizza in the Northwest Ohio region. Specifically, the deep dish pizza. I've had the opportunity to travel throughout the country and try a lot of "famous" pizzerias. This is certainly up there on the list. The first noticeable attribute of this pizza is not just the thickness, but the density and amount of toppings. It is loaded with cheese, sauce, and whatever toppings you get. The final product is heavy! Secondly, the quality of every ingredient used is noticeable from the very first bite. It's something difficult to describe, but certainly makes a difference in the overall taste. Finally, the beer is served in a frosty mug. It is extremely cold and goes well with whatever it is you order. It is right next to Fifth Third Field, Home of the Toledo Mud Hens. Pizza, beer, and baseball is a beautiful combination. Take advantage of this hometown gem!

The overall on this place it is good. The location is nice in down town Toledo, the service is nice and the food is ok. The problem i have is that i had Chicago deep dish pizza in Chicago before and this is nothing like it, it is not even near it, they need to work on that pizza a lot to make it at the same level with Chicago pizza, but all the other food they serve is good, expect a long waiting time for the deep dish pizza it takes over 30 minutes to prepare which is normal in any place that serves this kind of pizza, the prices are not bad, we were lucky the day we were there, there was a baseball game next door and there was a lot of people on the streets and we were sitting outside otherwise downtown Toledo is a ghost town late at night.

Looking for an affordable option for lunch on Sunday and was surprised that the personal deep dish and salad lunch special is also good for the weekend for under $7. Placed an order for pick up ( they do not deliver on Sundays which they may want to reconsider if an event is at the Seagate center) we all got our individual pizzas and salads as ordered and had a nice lunch. Still feel the best deep dish pizza in the area

Nothing special, but we stopped in during a roadtrip on the way through town. FOOD: Tried the Chicken De-Lite flatbread sandwich with a side salad. ATMOSPHERE: Clean, well-furnished sports bar. SERVICE: So-so. My glass of water was usually full.

Best deep dish pizza I've ever had. Seriously. It takes a while to make though (usually 45 min), so I suggest calling and ordering ahead, so when you show up you don't have to wait as long, and the pizza will ready or at least close to it. The service is friendly and the beer comes in huge glasses, so order the smaller size if you aren't up for a lot. It is fun to sit upstairs on the deck and have a view of the city, but sometimes they have cover bands and if you aren't up for that, it is best to sit downstairs in one of the booths. The deep dish Papalis Gourmet has spinach, black olives, chicken breast, garlic and feta on it and is amazing. Highly recommended!

This was my first trip to a Pizza Papalis so I guess you could say I had high expectations. My mother suggested we go there for her birthday lunch and since my father had been there several times we figured the food would be good. The restaurant is located within the stadium block, literally about 50 feet away from the fences. The decor plays into the baseball theme with a big city sports bar feel to it. When we walked in, we were greeted and asked how many. Then the hostess just started walking away without asking us to follow her or any gesture besides the two menus in her hand. The waitress came over shortly and recommended that since we weren't on a lunch break that we try the deep dish pizza, stating that it takes about 45 minutes to cook. Having made that style of pizza on my own, I know that it doesn't take nearly half that time to cook through. My mother had the minestrone soup, which she said was good, but was really more like an Italian vegetable than minestrone as it lacked the beans and pasta typical of minestrone. For our main course, I had the Gourmet Calzone, which seemed like the ingredients of a Greek pita put into a calzone. The dish had a nice, flaky crust but left an unappealing after taste in your mouth. My mother had the Create Your Own Calzone and she said that it was much better. Pizza Papalis is reasonably priced for a downtown location but the waitstaff seems to need a little more experience with customers.

Good Deep Dish Pizza, for not having to drive to Chicago for it, it's great. But still I'm partial to Giordanno's Pizza from Chicago. But this the next best thing in my opinion. Love to come down town and get a pizza and a few drinks and enjoy a baseball game or hockey game.

Finally! Good pizza in Toledo! Being a Detroit native, I have long been a fan of Pizza Papalis. Although it is not quite the same as real Chicago deep dish pizza, it is very good nonetheless. If you have had real Chicago pizza before trying this place, you should expect something a little different (not drastically different, but different). The pizza is really good, and not just their deep dish pizza - their thin crust is good too. Be careful not to eat too much because it will feel like lead in your stomach, but that pain will have come from a pleasurable endeavour of gluttony. For anyone who is looking for good pizza in Toledo, look no further.

Deep dish pizza takes a long time to cook but worth the wait. The wings are some of the best in town. Wait staff in the bar was very rude though. One poured beer down my arm and just laughed about it and then had a disgusted look on her face everytine she walked away from our table but had plenty of time to hang out with her friends. Also, my wife ordered a mojito and the bartender took give minutes picking thru black mint trying to find some green stuff to put in with wretched results. Hopefully they will work on quality of ingredients and providing better service.

Opening just about a week ago and what an impression it makes. Driving up to the Monroe from Summit, you can't miss the bright lights. The newest addition to the warehouse district, the diamond glaring in the middle of the night, Pizza Papalis. Perhaps one day Riverfront West willl meet the townhouses near 14th and Adams and a downtown toledo will finally be realized, but for the nostalgic, light-hearted fun and experience look no further. A two-story establishment with accent lights illuminating the outside elevation, the restaurant cannot be missed. The bar is inviting, open windows lets you see right into the socializing, laughter and smiles of the patrons inside. Entertainment and food? Go up to the second floor for live entertainment starting at 10PM during the weekend. A sick friend wasn't strong enough to climb the two flights of stairs, so we opted for the first available seats downstairs and were seated right infront of the door. So everyone going out could feel sympathy on my soul and those coming in had to reconsider if they were still hungry. Its great, they have their own line of unique cocktails, but luckily I chose a top shelf long island to help me forget about being putting in the display case. The menu isn't enormous, but its a pizza place. As nice as pizza sounds, my heart melted at the idea of a flat-bread buffalo chicken sandwich and a side of fries. It was a really good sandwich, on taste and the ability to cause a mess. The buffalo sauce dripped down the sanwich, onto my napkin and eventually down my forearm. The feeling of disgust, almost...The sandwich is delicious and the fries were nothing to complain about. All for ONLY $6.95? Really? Wow! The Top Shelf Long Island was made of half of what use to exist at En Japanese all the way at the other end of Monroe. When you need a strong and hard one, this is the closest you are going to get to mind numbing. The jaw numbing drink was bitter but made up for it in relaxation. Now for the great taste that didn't meat the price, the root beer float probably cost about 30 cents to make and they were charging 300% as their markup. Good but not worth the cost. They also were out of Ginger Ale so the waitress volunteered to mix coke and sprite. We aren't that far away from a place in Michigan that not only drinks, but breathes the carbon in Vernors and a Sprite and Coke cocktail just will not suffice. It almost took my buzz away that my twenty dollar bill was comprised mainly of my $8 Long Island. Service was not great though, training would of helped as the staff seemed to stumble and interaction with the customer was not acceptable. No method to seating, introduction by the waiter, rarely checked on, nervous bus boy and easily irritable waitress unhappy with people getting in her way. I'm sure that it will all get better with time and comfort. Good luck to the new place in the warehouse distract, I can't wait to introduce other friends to the place.

As many others have said, they have amazing deep dish pizza. Hands down the best I've had anywhere in Ohio. Good location if you're coming from a Walleye or Mudhens game. Definitely a place you need to stop in to if you're visiting Toledo. Your eyes will always be bigger than your stomach here. You'll want to eat more of the pizza, but it's just not physically possible.

Pizza Papalis is really solid deep dish for outside of Chicago. I visit the windy city often since my girlfriend lives there and every visit I am sure to swing by at least one of the giants of deep dish while I'm there (Giordanos, Ginos East and Lou Malnati's). While you can find NY style pizza in bars across the country it is quite difficult to find a place that makes deep dish. It's sort of a rare art form. Pizza fanatics must try deep dish in order to appreciate the genre as a whole. I remember watching my dad eat deep dish for the first time last year (he enjoys a good pie) it was like watching a kid eat pizza for the first time. Well enough about deep dish in general lets get to Pizza Papalis. Basically they do a good job. As I said this stuff doesn't hold a candle to the big boys of the windy city but I'll take it being on the windy lake. Prices are not bad and remember for those that have sticker shock at a small or medium $10-$15 a slice or two will fill you up for the day. Toppings are solid but nothing to outlandish. Also newcombers to this type of pizza make sure to order an app because this stuff takes at least half an hour to bake. I've had the garlic cheese bread which was pretty good. Also PP has some great deals during the week including $1 drafts Sun-Thru. (small mugs but still a good deal) Also there are some lunch deals for around $6 that include a personal pizza. It's location downtown is pretty cool as well. In an old warehouse that's literally apart of fifth third field. The biggest thing that holds back the pizza in my opinion is the sauce. It's really bland, just not a lot of flavor. But like I said for deep dish this is (to my knowledge) the only game in town. The only reason this place doesn't get 5 stars in the service. I've had one bad and a few ok experiences. The ok experiences were just pretty typical (the bartender disappearing for 30 mins when I was looking for another drink, and a server also forgetting to bring silverware after they had been asked a few times). The bad experience was when I ordered a pizza for carryout and arrive and was told that it would be ready in 5 mins. After waiting 10 I asked if it was ready and I was told just another moment. After waiting another 10 mins I finally asked the manager about the situation and the pizza had been ready the entire time sitting on a shelf. The manager just sort of shrugged and didn't really apologize. So service is where they loose a star. Also I've not had anything but the deep dish, so I can attest to any of the other food, but my friends have gotten the thin crust and the meatball sub (which was large enough for two meals) and they assured me both were pretty good. There is also live music in the bar area on the weekends occassionaly which is a nice touch. The bar is not a bad option if you're downtown. I'll be back since no other place in Toledo (to my knowledge) has deep dish and every once in a while after loads of Marcos and Cottage Inn you just need something different.

Was there a while ago and would love to go back. A small is enough for two people and leftovers for another meal. Keep in mind it takes at least 45 minutes to bake your deep dish pizza so plan your time accordingly.

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
