It's A-OK. People raved about it so I gave it a try. Service- A+ Super nice staff! I like the atmosphere and how you can see them grill outside. Food- I got the Petite with ribber fries. It was okay.

I respect that the Ribber has been in Portsmouth for quite sometime. It has been a Portsmouth staple for "ribs", steaks and other home style foods but shame on you- if you have all the right tools to make great bbq why not actually do that!? It's 2015, time for a facelift, Ribber.

First time at the Ribber in about 15 years and apparently my memory has failed me. The ribs were very thick and dried out, I knew their "ribs" are more of a pork chop but I remember a smaller thinner version. My sister got the ribeye and it was outstanding, perfectly grilled & juicy. Service was top notch as was the Portsmouth pilsner. Maybe they will read my and other reviews and quit overcooking the ribs.

This was the first time I've been to the Ribber in over a decade - I only travel to Portsmouth for business. I love the Ribber! HUGE ribeye steaks! What else do you need to know? Seasoned and cooked to perfection.

Haven't been disappointed! Tried the 1/4 chicken and Rib.....awesome! The rib is more like a pork chop - tons of meat. And the Baked Potato rocks. Sampled my husband's Onion Rings and my 7 year old's French Fries...nothing better! Service was so fast we had to stick around in the bar area to get our fill of the atmosphere even after we were done eating. Found "new best friends" to talk about baseball and as always we were pleasantly full. I love this restaurant!

Glad we didn't take bad reviews into account. Service was great, food even better. Highly recommend.

The ribs are more of a chop, not a rib, but are very good. Steaks are great and the chicken we had was some of the best I've ever tried. Great place!

You shouldn't expect a 5-star dining experience when you arrive here, but you will definitely receive 5-star taste if you get a steak, chicken, or ribs. Those are the specialties. The steaks here are to die for if you like tender, juicy, flavorful steak. The ribs are not your normal ribs, but they are still tender, meaty and flavorful especially when paired with the homemade BBQ sauce. The chicken is tender, flavorful, and not over-smoked.

We travel an hour just to eat the best steak that one can buy. Get it medium rare - you owe it to yourself to see what the magic hands of these cooks can do.

I've got to say this was a meal that just made the hair stand up on the back of my neck. I had the steak and it was huge and very reasonably priced. Juicy, prepared to perfection and the seasoning was to die for. The place had excellent service and the wait was reasonable for the dinner time rush. I'm happy to say the food came fast and the waitress was on our every want and need. Try the jewel if you ever find yourself close. Hope you love it as much as I did.

I've dined at Ruth Chris, Hyde Park, Morton and Capital Grille and they do not stand up to the steak at the Ribber. The Ribeye is simply amazing. No, you're not going to get the atmosphere like Ruth Chris. You wont find carpaccio on a bed of arugula or lobster bisque with sherry. If all you want is a great steak with no fuss or frills this is the place. Love this place!

Serving sizes are huge. Food is amazing. Only downside is the wait, but it's worth it!!

Get the ribeye. Just trust me. Went with my bf, bestie, and her hubby for early dinner Saturday night. Two words: Meat. Sweats. Absolutely the best steak I've ever had, anywhere. My friend's hubby said it best, "If you're going to spend $25 on a steak, you should spend it at the Ribber." :)

Long wait but the steak was amazing!!! That was the best steak I have ever gotten at a restaurant before! My sister recommended this place since she has been living in Portsmouth and said its the best place in town. Ribber fries are good but, could use some season salt and creamy slaw was just OK, the steak was the real star of the meal.

Interesting that they sale small steaks and big steaks, 16 oz or 32 oz, choice of ribeye or strip. Ordered strip and waiter told me to get ribeye, OK, cheap and good service. There ain't much great cuisine I've found in Portsmouth but this place I could come every night for fair steak at right price.

One of the best tasting steaks I've had in a very long time. The ribs are very pleasing and delicious. I almostbwanted to bask in the awsome smells coming from the skin on grills. A must visit, if in Portsmouth. Weekends are tough to get in. So plan ahead.

This would be a 5 star but we waited over an hour for our food at 4pm on a Saturday. Servers are friendly but stressed. One little lady jumped on us while looking for our friends. They need to set up a better system for checking in and waiting the microphone and list in the middle of the room is terrible. The food is FANTASTIC! Plan on a long long wait to get a table and for food but the steaks are huge, the chicken is delicious.

Oh my this is the best steakhouse I have ever been to. You have two size options and they are both scrumptious. All the food is cooked out back on woodfired barbecue grills. If you come in from the street side you may think you're entering a dive bar but all the local folks know to park in back and sit in the family room. If we are ever close to this area again we will definitely make it back here.

I rode down today with some coworkers to finally try "the ribber" as my friends call it. I ordered the large New York strip steak, cole slaw and onion rings. My friends told me that I would be taking food home with me if I ordered the large steak. I ordered my steak medium and asked for A1 sauce. The steak was cooked perfectly and I did not use the steak sauce at all. Probably one of the best steaks I have had in Ohio. The onion rings were beer battered. They were hot and fresh. The cole slaw was good but I wish the serving size was a little bigger. Overall I am very impressed and I have a whole steak I brought home to continue to enjoy this place. A must try that is worth the drive down to Portsmouth.

I really like the Ribber. The food is great. If you get anything I would recommend the steak or pork chops. Those to me are by far the best. This chicken is a little dry sometimes, and the dinner rolls? Cheap, it would be nice to have different bread. Other than that I can't complain

I was in Portsmouth for work this weekend with a colleague of mine. He has been down here numerous times before. So for dinner on Friday night he recommended we go to the Scioto Ribber. This place was packed and I was starving!! We waited quite a long time, it seemed like half the town was there. They took our name as we waited in standing room only. The staff was literally running though the crowd serving and bussing tables. After 45 minutes we sat. It was TOTALLY worth the wait !!!!! Being called The Ribber, I decided to go with the ribs. I think they were more like pork chops..... I don't care. They were delicious! Portions were ridiculous. You simply can NOT leave here hungry. The BBQ sauce @ the table was great slathered all over EVERYTHING. Try the Ribber fries! After dinner we went back to the hotel where I went directly to my room and succumbed to a food induced coma. The next time I'm in Portsmouth I'll be going back to try the steak this time.

I had the ribs that look like pork chops, had a good taste but not fresh! The food arrived in less than five minutes, was precooked and very dry!

  • Mye N.

I agree that the ribs are more of pork chops, and they do give a generous serving. I was hoping for ribs, though. A little dry for my taste, but I heard lots of great things about their steak. Will try next time!

Dinnertime at the Ribber is good. Fresh beers from Portsmouth Brewery, and great smoked/grilled meats. Chicken is juicy, ribeye steak is really amazing. A slightly better wine offering would vault this place up big time. Casual for sure but excellent nonetheless.

Great restaurant and bar. They serve local beers from the Portsmouth Brewing Company which was fantastic. I enjoyed the 16oz. Ribeye which was extremely juicy and had great flavor, no streak sauce needed. The German coleslaw was different and I would order again. Overall the bartender was extremely helpful and the staff was very friendly. Down home cooking and southern hospitality = the best!

Go with the steaks at the Ribber! They are delicious! The ribs are not our favorite because they are dry and overcooked! We have had the ribs several times thinking they would improve-- we gave up and don't order them anymore. It's rather dark and loud -- more like a bar, but it has been remodeled in recent years.

Good service and portions. Ribs on the dry side on last visit but I stop whenever I'm in town. Local Portsmouth brewing company beers on tap.

The prices are a little high, but you get large portions of food. They have locally-brewed, fresh beer on tap (Red Bird Ale is great). If you can get fresh ribs, they are great. However, most of the time you get microwaved re-heats that have been refrigerated. They can be a little dry when nuked. The steaks are a different story! I've been to the Ribber at least fifty times, and I have never had a bad steak. They are always thick, juicy and delicious. To the lady above who said her home steaks are just as good, please message me your recipe :) I always recommend the Ribber steaks to anyone from out of town who wants to try good food in Portsmouth.

I live two hours away and drove into town and my first stop was to this little slice of heaven. From the time you get out of your car and smell those wood fire grills and get a big smile and hello from the dudes working them you can't help but fall in love with this place. You go in and it's so cozy and the staff is as friendly to you as if you were there everyday. They offer me a few local craft brews and I tried two of them, the Portsmouth Pilsner was the better of the two. Then they give you the menu and under steak you have two options ribeye or strip (in my opinion the only two cuts right for grilling) and of those you can pick small or large and by small they mean 16oz and large is a whopping 32oz! You'd better bring your appetite if you want to eat here. The ribber fries weren't my favorite I would steer clear of those but the house made slaw made me want to tell them to get my mom out of that kitchen (just a joke as my mom doesn't work there) and the price for 2 beers a "small" steak with two sides and bread only set me back about $30. This will definitely be a place I will return to when I go back to Portsmouth next time.

In the heart of a small town comes one of the greatest steakhouses of all time. If you're hungry and a meataterian like me you're gonna love this place!! It's a small town feel in ... A small downtown but when you walk in the sultry smell of BBQ fills the air! And with steak steak served by the cow you're not gonna leave hungry at all. If I'm ever in town I make it a must detour to have dinner/lunch at the Ribber!

It's been a while since I visited but this restaurant is still one of my favorites. Service is very important to me and it is consistently good here. I can always get a decent brew which is great, and the food seems to be good no matter what I try. Of course, steaks are the star here and that's generally what I stick with!

Good BBQ in Portsmouth? Yes. This is one of the few good BBQ places in Ohio. I've always been very pleased after going here. The meats are smoked to perfection, neither too much nor too little, leaving them with a perfect smokey taste. Not sure why it's called the Ribber since the steaks are both the best thing and what everyone seems to order. The small steaks are big enough to feed a small family, and the big steaks would feed you for a week. However, the taste of these is so good that you will actually finish them all before you leave. The sauces and sides are pretty good too, but you came here for the meats. Order those and eat it all! The on tap beer is also a good choice because it comes from the local brewery, making this one of the few places that serves more than Bud and Miller. Skip the colored Bud water and go with the Portsmouth Brewery on tap. Just don't drink too much, you know you want to drive by the floodwall murals after dinner.

If you like steaks and bbq you will get the best of both worlds here. My buddy lives close by and got me hooked on this place. This place looks more like a dive bar than a restaurant but its a comfortable atmosphere. The steaks take a while to come out since they are smoked/grilled to order. You get a nice portion of fresh dinner rolls with your meal and the bbq sauce is amazing. A little spice but goes great on just about everything. I think there are only two options as far as the steaks go but they do both well. The ribs are not your typical rack of ribs. They are more like boneless pork chops. Not exactly what cut of meat they are but are still excellent. I haven't tried much else on the menu because the steaks/ribs are so good. The juice that the steaks are served in is amazing as well. This place is worth the wait and drive from columbus.

Was ok but nothing like was bragged about. Ribs were a bit on the dry side and steak was as good as I can cook at home! Bit disappointed. Service was ok.

It's called the ribber, but their steaks are what is to die for. Ribs were ok, but steaks were giant, perfectly cooked, and marbled. Best steak for the money you will ever have. The atmosphere is very bar-like, but the steaks compete with the best high end restaurants. Have been there several times and was never disappointed. One tip: don't over purchase, the quantities are humongous.

I was excited to hear about a place that was supposed to have good smoked food. I was extremely disappointed with the food and it takes a lot for me to not like food. The "ribs" are not ribs at all (they are pork chops) and I have never had tougher, less flavorful meat that was supposed to have been smoked.

Portsmouth doesn't have many "quality" restaurants, but people rave about the Ribber. From the outside, it looks cozy and cute, get inside, and it's very dark and crowded. There are some tables up front, and more tables in the back, with a large bar in the middle. I can't say it's the cleanest place I've been to, but the service is quick and the food decent. What really will draw you in to this restaurant is the smell of the BBQ that is cooked outside over wood. This is definitely a meat and potato kind of place- there is nothing vegetarian on the menu except for the fried appetizers, baked potato, and side salad. With my husband being vegetarian, we have only eaten here a few times. I've had the ribs, which I had heard were the best. They were good, but not great. Not authentic ribs, more of like pork chops. The second time I went I had the BBQ pork sandwich which was good. The Ribber fries aren't really fries, more of slices of potatoes. This is an okay place- perfect for those who have a craving for meat.

I rode the Harley to Portsmouth on a whim last week. I wanted to check out the murals on the flood walls. While in town, I asked a couple locals where to eat. Nothin suggested the Ribber. The food was awesome and in VERY hearty portions. My only complaint was that they didnt have baked potatoes "done yet" and they supposedly wouldn't be done for another 45 minutes! I was bummed but quickly got over it and will definitely be back if I am ever in Portsmouth again.

My husband and I took a friend from out of town here for lunch/dinner. It was so/so. I had a rueben which was good, not fantastic, but not bad either. My husband had a small New York which was fantastic. It had great flavor and was cooked perfectly. He asked for medium rare and the steak was perfectly pink. Our friend from the West Coast got the ribs however and we were a bit embarrassed as the ribs are not ribs but pork chops. This would have been ok if the pork chops had been cooked well, but the pork chops were dry as a bone. Ugh. We had also gotten a basket of fried mushrooms as an appetizer to share at the table and they definitely should have stayed in the frier a bit longer as the batter was wet. So while my husband and I enjoyed our meals, our friend from out town didn't get a very good experience of our small area. Pretty true to form but this is supposed to be one of the nice restaurants in the area. Oh well.
