First time here, but I WILL be back! Ordered the shrimp quesadilla. The very pleasant waiter had no sooner taken my order, then brought corn chips with very fresh tasting (and thick) salsa, and my order was there. Could not have been more than 5 minutes. The quesadilla was loaded with shrimp, cheese and chilies, and came with nice sides of southwest dressing, sour cream, guacamole, and a very fresh tasting side of tomato, chili peppers, cilantro, etc. I would have given them 5 stars, but just can't do that on a first visit. Maybe next time - and there will be a next time

If you are undecided about going here...GO! Food, service and drinks are excellent and we are picky.

Had lunch here, wasn't exactly sure what to expect. Had an exceptional server, Ashley, who was quick to offer more and made sure we never had to ask for a soda refill. It's nice to have more of an al a carte choice when dining. Yes, the tacos do run 2-3 dollars but one bite of the carne asada or carnitas makes up for the cost. You'll find yourself adding another then another. This isn't your boring plain tex-me type of place. It does have flavor. Sauces could use more heat.. This is the only flaw I came across

My husband and I enjoy going here on a Fri or Sat night. The wait isn't too bad. We usually order the queso and the steak fajitas are really tasty.

I've been to Tekela a number of times, as my girlfriend is in love with the chorizo dip, and I've found it's kind of a crapshoot. Sometimes it's a great experience; sometimes it's a pain. Overall the food is not bad, especially once you figure out which things are good. As mentioned, the chorizo dip is excellent, and we could probably drink their complementary house salsa (note: it's sweet and tangy). Some of the salads and tacos are very good as well. Most everything else I would say is decent but not great. Like you can get a better burrito at Chipotle, and some of the pulled meats in the enchilladas are too dry. The restaurant gets very loud when full, and the kitchen and service have been inconsistent. The one time I ordered the chorizo burger it came out burnt, and once when I tried to dine there the staff refused to let me order alcohol because they tried to read my driver license in their machine and it didn't work. I've never had this problem anywhere else and the manager couldn't be bothered to come to our table to explain the issue. On some other days, service was very slow. I have also had some excellent waiters though, so like I said, Tekela is more inconsistent than bad across the board. Fortunately for Tekela, they don't face much impressive local competition and seem to do a brisk business, but overall I'd say the place is just decent.

Ok restaurant. Food is worth the $. Menu is short and not much of a selection fog the vegetarian.

Food is pretty good but they can't seat a table. Empty restaurant but 10 minute wait to push two tables together.

This was our first time here tonight. 25 minute wait for two people, so we put on our name and got a buzzer, and proceeded do the bar area to wait. We were able to snag a table in the bar area. We were promptly greeted by our waitress for a drink order and some fantastic salsa and chips (their salsa is sweet). We then ordered our food after about a 10 minute wait. I ordered the carnitas (pulled pork) which was served with a cilantro/onion mix and some rice and corn tortillas (I requested the flour tortillas since I don't care for corn ones). My food also came with some kind of beans that I didn't care for at all; they seemed to be a pinto bean soup consistency. My husband ordered a chimichanga, and his was really good. We also ordered a fried ice cream which was huge; more than enough to share. The topping had raisins in it along with the customary sugary/sweet coating atop a fried tortilla with caramel and chocolate sauce. The lighting in the bar is very dark, so it was kind of hard to read the menu.

We were seated immediately and had great service but the food was pretty terrible. Under cooked lime rice, lukewarm beans, flavorless guacamole. Steak taco was tough as boot leather and tasteless. Not impressed.

Food was strange. I sort of think they were going for an "upscale" Mexican taste, but it fails. The pescado taco was nothing but fish flavor and little else, and the carnitas enchilada tasted like I am not sure what. Being from California, I know what mexican food tastes like, and this is not it. Matters were made worse when the air conditioning started leaking directly onto my table, making a puddle of water right next to my iPad. I actually wanted to sit at the bar, but the owner was actually taking up that space, preventing me from sitting where i wanted too. Perhaps if he wasn't in my way, I wouldn't have been at a table being dripped on. Seems like a bad practice to be in the customer's way. On a plus side, the manager Alivia, yes spelled with an "A" , was very nice and accommodating. She welcomed me upon arrival, and offered me places to sit.

I've eaten here 3 times and every occasion I left feeling sick. Not sure if it's the meat quality or what but it does NOT sit well with me, and I LOVE Mexican food. Highly recommend El Zarape in Bowling Green instead

This is the best Mexican in the area! The food was amazing, we had the tacos and there are plenty of options to choose from. Sangria was made to perfection and service was very attentive. Cant wait to go back!

S...L...O...W...!!! We came here on a Saturday and the whole meal took over 90 minutes. I'll give them the fact that there was a party in the back room, but if you knew about something in advance you should call in extra staff to handle it or be "closed for a private party". I think there was only one waitress for the whole front room, and she was way overworked and confused. Our food took forever and I never got my soup, a fact that she didn't know until I pointed it out after we got our food. I told her to just make sure it wasn't on the bill. Our food order was not right, but we weren't going to send if back and wait any longer. Another nearby couple waited 45 minutes for their food and then had to argue with the waitress when they asked for the bill for their drinks so they could leave. The food was ok, but not worth the wait. Portions were on the small side, and only ok, not great. There are other places in the area for Mexican and I won't be going back here.

Went here last night with a group of 8 people. Our server was amazing, extremely attentive even though she had several other tables. The food was really good, especially the chorizo dip and guac. I could make a meal just on those two. We also tried the shrimp ceviche, which was more like just cooked shrimp with lemon and veg but it wasn't bad. I ordered the Chicken Cobb salad which was HUGE, and also tried some of the street tacos. The Al Pastor taco had the right about of spice for me, when I go back, I may just get 3 of those. Everyone in my party really enjoyed their food, although the one vegetarian would have liked more options. Tekela's offers a lot of specialty cocktails and all three that I tried were delicious, especially the Electric Blue Lemonade. Monday-Friday from 3-6pm they offer half-off on all their drinks and appetizers, next time I may just stay in the cantina area and pig out on those. :-D

Tekela is a place that I thought was going to blow my mind. After reading the reviews on this site, and hearing some advice from friends about how great this place was, I was slightly disappointed. And I wouldn't say I'm a big snob when it comes down to Mexican food, but I figured I would be getting something a lot better than the Toledo norm. (Also, has anyone ever noticed that we have a disproportionate amount of Mexican restaurants in this town?!) To celebrate a friends birthday, about 12 of us went to this restaurant to have dinner as this was "the best Mexican food in Toledo." I wouldn't go around telling people that, but I would say that the experience was decent. From the moment we got there on a Friday night, I was getting a good vibe. There was a wait showing they were busy, the staff looked happy and friendly, and those who were waiting didn't seem disgruntled by fact that they had to stand in the doorway as the bar area was full. Overall, the ambiance was nice and friendly - despite the temperature being below 37°. (Everything relates set temperature, I'm from Florida, and this weather is rough on me!) The decor isn't anything to write home about, but it isn't anything overly fancy. You could get away with going to this place wearing jeans and a T-shirt, but I would definitely be your tank tops and suits at home. One difference that I found from this restaurant compared to other Mexican restaurants in town, is the staff that works there. At most of the restaurants you see majority of the staff members of Spanish or Mexican descent. At Tekela I noticed there were a lot of other nationalities. This doesn't go for or against them, rather just the mere observation. Once my friends and I were seated, the waiting staff took our drink orders and came back fairly quickly. I ordered a pitcher of margaritas for my friend and I and they were decent. There is nothing magical about them nor would I be sending a postcard to my mother telling her how wonderful they are. Note: they don't have pitchers of frozen margaritas, only on the rocks. Second note: I recently found out that a true Mexican restaurant shouldn't actually put ice IN the pitcher, rather they should give you a glass with ice in it and have the pitcher actually be only the beverage and replace your glass as the ice melts. What a concept, right? When I looked at the menu, I was pleasantly surprised. There were 12 pages of various meals that all sound the same. They have a front and the back to one page. That's it. You can order everything under the sun, although they do have an à la carte menu. I ordered for tacos at dinner from their à la carte menu and I was happy. If you have been to San Marcos near downtown Toledo, that's what their tacos are like... But not nearly as good. Given the option between flour and corn tortillas, I would deftly go with corn. Getting our food was an interesting ordeal. Although the restaurant was packed, but I don't know why it took them two attempts to get the right food to our table. After the second time they went back with the wrong food, my friends and I started to joke that they may just end up giving us the wrong food with the right name this time around, but I don't think that happened... at least I hope not! Everyone seemed to be pretty happy with their meals and no one questioned whether they got fish instead of chicken. The food tasted fresh, and didn't seem as though the meat came out of a big boiler in the back, which is sometimes hard to say about other Mexican restaurants in town. Also, it took them more than 2-minutes to get their food to the table. I always find a little concerning when you order a meal, and no less than a few minutes later your food comes out. It seems a little crazy that I have to say that, but that is the reality for number of Mexican restaurants in town. I mean, if you're going to microwave the food, at least give it a minute or two before you bring it out. I as well as some of my friends would say that their food tended to be a little dry. I found that if you ask for some of their hot sauce, it definitely makes things a little better. To no surprise, getting our bills was a mess. Some of us were charged for things that we never ordered, while others were charged for things that never came to the table despite ordering them. After we had everything sorted out, we paid our bills and left. While none of us were gawking over this restaurant, it seems as though everyone was happy. As most foodies will tell you, a good restaurant is one where you see natives dining. Tekala isn't one of those establishments. They are just another good restaurant in Toledo, but not one that I would drive a distance to visit. If you're in the area, I would definitely give it a shot, but if you're looking for great Mexican food There's better in Toledo.

A pre-concert dinner last night for a party of 8 and everything was great! We had made a reservation since we were a larger party and we were seated promptly (even though the restaurant was quite busy at 6 pm). Our male server was excellent (sorry, didn't get your name) and took drink orders immediately as each in our party arrived. The Platinum Margarita is excellent -a great balance between the tart and the sweet. Some of us also had the red bull marg and enjoyed those as well. I find the house marg a bit too sweet for me. Everyone ordered something different (queso dip, house guacamole, salads, tacos, burritos, enchiladas, quesadilla) and all were happy with their choices. On a previous visit, we also tried the fajitas and the tequila flights - also recommended. Please please put in a patio!

The food was even better on our second visit! I had a fish taco and a chicken enchalada both of which were great. And the beans and rice were again not just good, but warm. And the prices are great. *********************** Toledo has this odd fondness for really bad Mexican food as long as alcohol is involved (ventura's, carmels, loma lindas...). So Tekela may well not fit in here as it has good food. We had excellent and fast service through out. It wasn't noisy, We tried the dip sampler which was great. It was way more than the two of us could finish along with our meals. Both entrees were good. The rice was even hot! And I liked the beans, which I never do. We'll be back.

A friend suggested this restaurant to me so we tried it out. The parking and entering the business was a bit confusing getting there at night. Once in, we sat in a server named Steven's section. Wow he was so enthusiastic about the cuisine and beverages you would have thought he owned the place or was the chef there. Ala carte all the way. I love not ordering a number 175 or some other number from the typical huge menu with thousands of poorly shot photos of food. As a chef visiting a new restaurant I order a plethora of items to get the full taste of this new place. To my amazement the food was close to authentic as you would ever get in a local restaurant. Tthe only issue we had was the white cheese dip was scorched probably from quick heating on the burner to keep up with the demand. This is expected being very new. You will not be disappointed if you ask for Steven's section his serving is a good as it gets. If you need to ask for the manager or owner good luck, we watched him poke out of the kitchen walk around aimlessly staring at the walls for a few minutes and then go back. We ordered most of the margaritas. The best one was the premium the others lacked the punch or flavor promised. I will definitely go back.

I've only been here for lunch, but I have never had a bad experience. The BBQ chicken tostada bowl (or whatever the exact name) is my favorite so far. And definitely try the chipotle ranch. Very affordable and offers a fresh twist on the Mexican food you're used to if you live in the area. I've also heard good things about the margaritas and the parking lot is always full when I drive past it on my way home from work--which I like to think is a good sign.

Not bad overall. I liked it better when it was "Buttons" back in the 80s, but I digress... SERVICE: The service was very friendly and very accurate, but it was also pretty slow, (and it wasn't even that busy (lunch, Saturday)). FOOD: The chips, salsa and guacamole (if you choose to call that stuff food), were very good. The guac is nice and chunky; I'm not sure if they do, but it certainly looks like they made it to order. The chili relleno was also very good, and the texture was excellent (a little crispy on the outside, not too mushy on the inside). My buddy, however, thought the beef tacos needed a lot more flavor. One of the things that I liked about the menu is that it was reasonably extensive, but not so friggin' huge (like those of some Mexican places) that you fall asleep reading it! MARGS: Again, pretty good. Nice flavor, and they use enough "Te'kela" to achieve the desired effect. I'm probably coming back for more. However, I will say that if I'm going to drive to Perrysburg for Mexican food, I'm a little more likely to stop at Cocina De Carlos.

An all girls birthday celebration prompted a visit to Tekela on a Friday night. The restaurant was busy and the bar packed. Aside from being extremely noisy, the bar was nice with plenty of room. The margaritas were tasty but I'm a beer dinker, so I'm not sure if my opinion can be trusted. Unfortunately, there was not enough staff to keep tables cleaned and customers served without a 5 to 7 minute wait. Actually our table in the bar was never wiped down. The wait to be seated for dinner was relatively short at 30 minutes. We moved into the dining room and had the pleasure of being served by the GM, Anthony. He was very attentive and friendly. All o our food was fresh and delicious. I liked that you could choose tacos by portion and pay accordingly. No over eating. One of the dishes was too spicey for someone in our party. Anthony promptly swapped it out for something more palatable and she was pleased. We ended the evening with a fried ice cream with a bit of chocolate drizzled on top and whipped cream. It was and enjoyable experience all the way around.

Food was good, not the typical Americanized Mexican food. My favorite is the quesadilla (with fajita veggies) off the appetizer menu, accompanied with some tacos. Great happy hour specials! My only complaint is there's no outside patio. Service was average.

Ok food, cramped walkways and bad service. I'll start with the bad. Our waitress was not the friendliness person in the world. Everything we said to her seemed to put her into a worse mood. That saying a lot since we only saw her long enough to get our order and to drop off our food and the check. We were lucky if we got two words in to here. NEVER got a refill on our drinks. The place is built into old warehouse which sounds great for room. But most of the seating is in what was the office of the warehouse. When the place was Maggies (think America Kitchen worse food) the walk way ware more open. Since then they've put up a divider to make a walkway for the waiters to add more booths. Also the main entrance was originally wide open. They have put up a wall to funnel people into the restaurant. Barely one person can fit through now and all the menus are by the door. So the waitress has to reach behind you to get one. Lighting is terrible. Take a flashlight. I can see setting a mood but when its sooooo dark you hardly see your menu you have a problem. Parking is weird. There are 3 lots: The main loot in the front hat holds about 10-15 cars, back lot that hold about 30-40 cars and abodoned motel that is connected to warehouse. Prices are decent. A little expensive for some of some of the items but mostly on par with the local sit down places. What about the food? Everything thing seems to come frozen or from a can. The sauces all where pretty generic. The chicken salad I has was cross of Bob Evens' Wildfire Salad and Taco Bells Fiesta Chicken Salad. The two dressings that came with it were just a sweet BBQ sauce and Hidden Valley Chopolte Ranch. The chicken was *very* small pieces, *very* uniformed pieces with little flavor. Again I believe it was either frozen or from a can. The lettuce was perfectly shredded which make me think Gordon's pre-cut lettuce. My wife made an ala carte plate. Everything was good but the carnita had so much lime juice it. If it wasn't drowned in a bland red sauce she wouldn't have finished hers. Her chicken taco and cheese roll thing was good but it kinda hard to mess up chicken and cheese in a flower tortilla. Food prep time was fast (about 10 minutes) which again makes me think all canned food. Overall if you want a place to meet up with friend and get drinks this is good place. Just don't expect much or exciting food.

  • Bekah L.

The food was terrible. I had 2 cheese enchiladas and the red sauce they poured over it was like spaghetti sauce. The red sauce was thick, sweet, and pasty. The salsa for the chips was way too sweet and the house guacamole had no taste. The person I went with ordered tacos and they fell apart, so he had to eat them with a fork (he said they were pretty good though). The server was acting very odd. We would respond to her and she would just stand there and stare at us. It made us really uncomfortable. Huge disappointment. I'm never going back there and I would never recommend it to anyone who likes real Mexican food.

I know this place is getting really great reviews, but I wasn't very impressed. We went here on a Wednesday night and it was jammed-packed with a mix of people, to include entire families. I don't have a problem with that. I think it's nice to have a restaurant that caters to everyone. The thing that did get me about this place was the noise level. OMG...I felt like I needed hearing protection! I suppose it didn't help that there was a large party of adults sitting next to us that seemed pretty juiced up on margaritas. Anyway, maybe the front of the restaurant was quieter, but where I sat in the back I felt like my ears were going to implode - it was very echoey, much like Social on the other side of Perrysburg. 'Meh' best describes the food at Tekela. Their carne asada meal was mediocre at best. There wasn't any seasoning on it whatsoever - not even salt. In my opinion, that's what makes Mexican food - the seasoning. The beans that accompanied my meal arrived as a small bowl of soup with bacon in it - very American. I expected re-fried beans or something similar, not bean soup. They could have at least given it a Mexican flair. I've been to many other so called 'authentic' Mexican restaurants in the Toledo area that are much better than this place. For the money, I'd rather hit up Mi Hacienda's or Cocina de Carlos.

I tried out this restaurant for the first time. Overall, I was very satisfied. Our waitress was very courteous and fairly attentive. Good atmosphere! The chips and salsa were great as well as the rest of the food. The fish tacos were delicious! The food was served timely. The only issue that I had was that although our food was served quickly, the remainder of the service was slow. Once we were done eating, it took forever to pay my bill. I felt like I was sitting around forever. Other than that, I'm a fan and I will definitely return again!

  • D N.

Food was good. However, our waitress was horrible. She appeared to be the head waitress the way she acted and spoke to her coworkers. Ample wait staff available but it was clear one or two waitresses were being territorial by taking more tables than they could handle. Finally, sitting across from the kitchen I could clearly see into the kitchen each time the door opened... The level of cleanliness concerned me. If the owner(s) can address these issues it will turn into a great place. If not, well...

Went there about 6:45 on a Thursday night with my wife. Wait was quoted about 20-30 minutes, so we grabbed a seat at the bar and had a margarita. I think we waited about 15-20 minutes before we got our table. Margarita's were very good, and they have a wide range of variety/tequila's to choose from. If you "like" them on Facebook, you can get free queso dip, so we did. The salsa was unbelievable - could tell it was home with a nice taste to it. The queso was good as well, with a nice kick to it. I got a steak nacho burrito, while my wife got a fajita chimichanga - they were both huge and neither of us finished them. Mine came with a small portion of french fries with chili powder on them and a side of avocado relish. Fries portion was a little small compared to the size of the burrito - but they were good. The beans and rice were adequate and normal sizes that came with her chimichanga. Both of our meals were awesome and worth a trip back. Previous reviews about loud music - The bar was normal, and the dining room - we didn't even hear any house music, so we were able to chat and have a nice dinner conversation. Waitress was solid - got things that we asked for/needed/refills/etc in a timely fashion and was pretty personable. Manager checked with us at the bar to see how we were doing and did a table touch about 2/3's of the way through our meal, too. The menu is not a typical Mexican restaurant - more of American/Mexican as a previous post said. If you are wanting flat out Mexican food in Perrysburg, go to El Vaquero/Casa Baron/etc. We will be going back to this place for sure either way. Also - Half price drinks and app's 3-6 Monday-Friday.

I was expecting this place to knock my socks off after hearing so many good things about it. It was just ok. Food was average. Portions were large. Dessert selection could use improvement. Waitstaff was very friendly though. My date said she would never return here again. To temper that statement though I have to confess I decided to make that my last date with her as she is quite picky. I would give it another shot down the road but not anytime soon as there are other places to try.

Have been to Tekela twice now... First visit had the chicken fajitas which were cooked perfectly full of flavor and included a colorful array of peppers (not just the green ones) which was a plus! Second time around got the quesadilla that is full of shrimp, chicken and steak... I got mine without the steak... again I was impressed. Another thing with Tekela is their portions are huge so you are definitely going to have enough for lunch the next day. Staff is attentive and atmosphere is nice. My only complaints are that the bathrooms were dirty and the margaritas leave something to be desired. Definitely will be returning for the food!

Are there any managers that work here??? My wife and I went for the fist time yesterday and what a disappointment! While we waited at the bar for our table to become available there was an off duty guy sitting next to me that was making snide remarks about patrons with the bar tender. We asked for some chips and salsa at the bar while we waited but they never arrived, probably due to the constant distraction from the other coworker. We get our seat and our server ANGEL comes up without introduction(I had to look at the check for his name), said three words then disappeared. Angel only came by twice throughout the entire meal and we were there for over an hour. There was one point at which we had to yell out in attempts to get anyones attention to tend to our empty glasses for close to 20 minutes. When we looked for ANGEL he was standing by the bar socializing with the female servers and texting on his phone. We also noted many servers walking out of the kitchen with their mouths full chewing food they must have swiped off of a plate from the back...who knows. We were very disappointed and wonder WHERE WAS THE MANAGER to correct this behavior and improve our service? The food was decent but in no way over rides the horrific treatment and service we received.

Beautiful decor, great for conversation. Fresh ingredients, large portions, friendly, attentive staff. Definitely recommend this for any occasion. Enjoyed house guacamole, chicken tortilla soup & Mexican chopped salad between the 2 of us & plenty to take home.

Food was excellent, this guacamole was awesome and I'm usually not a fan of anywhere else. Chips and salsa good, good was fresh and a nice change from the usual Mexican taste. Decor is very pleasant, our waiter was a little slow on drinks and such but was very apologetic. Parking could stink when they get busy. Try it out!

We were nervous to try this after reading the negative reviews. From the moment we walked in, though, we had a great experience! Service was friendly, prompt, and efficient. We ordered shrimp and chicken fajitas with lettuce wraps (translate to hunk of iceberg lettuce). Shrimp fajitas were better but we loved everything!! Margaritas were OK but extremely reasonably priced through their 3-6 happy hour (even on Saturday). Don't judge this place by the building outside or negative early reviews. We can't wait to go back!

The food is great, better than ElVaquero. BUT the layout is bad. The staff mill around by the door, causing crowding and making the diners uncomfortable. Staff should be provided a different area to congregate. The servers are mostly good when it is not over crowded.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
