Service was a little slow. Never got a refill for coffee. That being said, the food was great. The home fries are to die for. I'm not sure what the original use of the building was, but it has not changed from the early days of it's inception. I love the old timey feel of the place. Most of the people working there are people getting a second chance, they are bettering their lives through the employment of Sparta.

I've never been so excited to write a review as I am to write this one. My friend Bryant recently wrote an article on Yelp about places to try outside of Columbus for breakfast/ brunch which brought us to Sparta. First off, the decor is awesome. It has original wood booths, a diner counter and very eclectic art. The food... was great. The home fries which are fried in bacon fat just might be the best thing I have ever had. I opted for the meatloaf and eggs with the home fries. The meatloaf wasn't for me, because it had a sweet flavor to it but everyone else absolutely loved their food. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are just enough. That wasn't the best part though. We struck up a conversation with our waitress and got the background on the restaurant and all the wonderful things the owner was doing. He employs people who would otherwise not be able to gain employment due to criminal background. He is in the process of helping someone get early release, a job and essentially a second chance on life. He is giving a chance to those people who need someone to believe in them. How awesome is that?!? If you make the trip out to Newark, put this as your top place to try. Support the local business, support the great work he is doing for these people and our community. Take the time to strike up a conversation with whoever your waitstaff may be. You never know what you may learn!

VERY friendly service, but the food was not good. Under cooked eggs, old fruit, and home fries cooked in bacon grease. Not a place I'd visit twice.

I heard about this place this afternoon and decided to check it out immediately. Besides being located in the absolutely lovely downtown Newark, I found the inside decor very vintage. The booths with mirrors and the woodwork is stunning. Despite this, it still had a sense of "cool" with the fantastic local paintings hanging throughout. I'd like to actually purchase one, but every piece brings so much to the decor. I wouldn't be that selfish! I've heard through word of mouth and other reviews the type of community/civil service this establishment provides and it makes me happy to know that there are private business owners out here making a huge difference in the lives of many. Onto the food, I got a cup of coffee and a veggie omelet. The coffee was deep and strong. Very good. The omelet had a bit too much cheese on it for my tastes, but it was perfectly fluffy and packed with SO many veggies! As a vegetarian, this makes me very happy!! I'll be sure to order it again. My waitress was so lovely and attentive. I wish they stayed open until 3. There were people wanting to eat when I left. I'll definitely be back with friends next time.

I love everything about Sparta. Supporting a great local business like this is the reason why I'm a Yelper. Sparta Restaurant and Coffee Shop is situated in the adorable downtown Newark. Seriously, it's so cute--make a plan to walk around for an hour or so after your delicious breakfast or lunch. You'll get to see the beautiful sights with a bonus of walking off a few calories. Without even taking the first bite, Sparta gets 5 stars for being beautiful both outside and in. On the inside, you'll find original wooden booths, exposed brick, tall ceilings, and other remaining bits of hundred year-old character. The food is straight-up diner food... but with a twist. All the meat is locally-sourced from Ohio, the produce is as local as they can get it (sometimes from a community garden), and the coffee is roasted locally too! They have a decadent menu filled with things like cinnamon roll french toast. Lots of my friends ate these items, but even with my wheat thing--I didn't feel left out at all. I had eggs, sausage patties, and home fries. Everything was simple and perfect. The eggs were scrambled just right (you know most diners make them rubbery), the sausage was delicious, and the home fries were the star of the show. My only tiny wish is that they had a few GF items available--maybe even a loaf of GF bread they kept in the freezer to make some toast. Once we had scarfed down our meals, I asked our lovely server, Tina, to tell us their story. Y'all--this is when my heart just melted. Tina gushed about the owner, Chris. She told us how much of a community supporter he was, and how much he was doing for downtown Newark. She also told us how Sparta was a social entrepreneurship, employing folks who needed a second chance. She gave us her own story of being incarcerated, and how thankful she was that Chris had helped her. What was so beautiful was how proud Tina was of her story. When we went to check out, my mouth hit the floor--Keith and I ate for about $12, plus tip. Holy. Moly. I wholeheartedly encourage anyone to make the drive out to Newark to visit Sparta. It's a fantastic experience and deliciously simple diner food.

This diner has an old world vibe and delicious American comfort food. I love that they partner with local farms to get the best food possible! The diner is in the heart of Newark, close to hotels and shops, so it's easy to get to. We stopped by for breakfast on a Saturday morning and it was so busy and happy and full of life! You just could tell that Sparta is the favorite gathering spot for so many people in town. The best part about this diner is that the owner Chris employs people who otherwise may not be employed. He and his team train them up to be cooks and waiters and gives them a reason to be proud of themselves. Sparta is a big catalyst in the revival of Newark! So besides really good food, they also have really big hearts.

Overall a good restaurant. Food is good but service is alright. A good spot for me to sit down and have a nice talk with some friends. Reasonable price

I have ate here many times, it's all so wonderful and love the chicken and waffles, or the Reuben, breakfast is just as good as lunch.

Beautiful inside. Very cool atmosphere but it doesn't make up for the food! Went here with a friend I had the meatloaf and eggs, seemed like an intriguing combination. The meatloaf had the right amount of flavor just not the right amount of heat! The eggs and side of potatoes weren't bad but left much to be desired from the meal. My friend ordered the chicken and waffles based on the pictures from other fellow Yelpers. He said the waffle was great but the chicken? That's a different story, it lacked flavor and the breeding was not crispy at all. My only guess is that they had to heat up the oil to fry it and it wasn't up to the correct temperature for frying chicken (maybe that wait was why my meatloaf was cold). Luckily the staff was great. I hope this place improves and grows, they have a beautiful building, great staff, and are helping to revitalize downtown Newark.

Great breakfast and atmosphere. The food tastes fresh and I love that they locally source as much of their ingredients as possible. You also feel like you are stepping back in time with the quaint atmosphere. They provide community involvement which is great for any small town. I'm a fan!

I came in for the first time this morning for breakfast. I'm always skeptical about trying new places but wanted a change. I love what they do here. The atmosphere is great. I love the music they were playing and the decor. The food was good! Loved my coffee. Who I will assume is the owner came out from the back and lightly conversed with his customers, which is great to see. I will keep coming here.

Lost and in search of breakfast on a Sunday morning, the wife and I turned to Yelp for an answer. What's this? A breakfast joint in Newark with very few, but all five star, reviews? Count us in! Sparta takes on the appearance of a 1930s diner (lots of wood, cool booths, etc.) I love the decor and feel of both the exterior and interior. I also love the local sourcing and their involvement in the Main Street Project (CSA program). For all of these - I too would toss out five stars. Maybe we caught the place on an off day (it was Mother's day and they did seem a bit harried . . . even though it wasn't very crowded when we got there). I ordered up a traditional breakfast (scrambled eggs, hash browns, bacon, etc.) and topped it off with a waffle. The eggs appeared to have been scrambled once and then left alone in the pan and under the heat lamp (one cohesive block that was dry on the outside and runny in the middle). My hash browns were a bit too done and very greasy (although, kudos for serving up real hash browns!) The waffle was also over-done - very crispy on the outside and dust-like in the middle. Hey, the wheat toast was excellent! I do intend to return to Sparta - like I said, I loved the decor and feel of the place. The service was also excellent. I'm hoping that I just hit them on an off day in the kitchen.

We loved getting breakfast at this little local spot. Delicious coffee, great food and an owner with a giant heart for this town. We ordered two breakfasts. First was waffles with eggs and hash browns. Eggs were cooked perfectly and the waffle was firm yet moist on the inside. The other breakfast was an egg with bacon and an English muffin. Bacon was crispy and the buttered English muffin... Doesn't get any better than that. Cool local spot with good people and an old fashioned decor. Prices are affordable making this place definitely worth your while. If we didn't live 3000 miles away, we'd be regulars at this joint

Great place, great owner, great food and portions.... was told a great joke by the owner! I wish more places could be like this, awsome mission and way to lead the change by showing others the right way

I love the Sparta. I've eaten here dozens of times, always getting breakfast. I've never been disappointed. My favorite menu item is sausage gravy and biscuits. I don't usually like sausage gravy but I decided to order it once on a whim, and it's become my favorite thing on the menu. Their specials are always very good as well-ate there today and they had cinnamon roll French toast with strawberries. What a perfect way to use leftover homemade cinnamon rolls! Coffee is always very good and strong; their lattes and other frou-frou coffee drinks are good as well. Staff is always very friendly. The owner, Chris, is super talkative and will often sit down and talk at a table if you really get a good conversation going with him. The Sparta employs people who are re-entering the workforce, and Chris is always up front about a possible delay because someone new is in the kitchen or serving and is just learning. I really like that they do this, and also that they get locally-sourced food as much as possible. Don't expect a quick in and out at the Sparta (unless you're just getting a coffee to go), it's much better if you're heading in for a relaxed breakfast or early lunch and can give yourself some time and enjoy the food and the atmosphere.

Love this place. I was visiting from out of town and taken here by locals. Aside from the beautiful 1890s architecture, the owner does a lot for the community and helps people rehabilitate their lives through employment. As a result, the service is occasionally spotty but unfailingly friendly and polite. A great neighborhood vibe to the place. The American cuisine is excellent. Wish they were open later. Close at 2 daily. No wifi

This place is small, good food & good prices. It was like walking back into the 50's. We were there the morning after Thanksgiving and they were not expecting the crowd that they had. (1 waitress & 1 cook) They still got our order to us correctly and hot within 30 min. - Owner and other help got there to help just after we got our order. Owner does a lot for the community and helps people rehabilitate their lives all of the people running it were down on their luck veterans, or people that lost everything for one reason or another and trying to get reestablished.

This restaurant is doing great things for the community. They hold events, own homes to help rehabilitate folks with problems, they just got a 16 acre piece of property which they will be using to grow food for the restaurant, and our server was actively involved in what sounded like most all of that. They are involved in the restoration of downtown, which needs folks like this helping it out. If my review was on community involvement, they would get 5 stars!!! Our review is on breakfast however. One thing I'm kind of sad about, I did not know that there was a special going on for the day! Only $5 for french toast and bacon! My husband even ordered the french toast and it was not brought up that it was part of the special. His french toast was made with good bread, with a basic egg mix. There was no cinnamon or sugar in it like you'd expect but it was good enough. The eggs we ordered were farm fresh, his were runny, mine were cold. Our hash browns were not to be desired however. That's rather disappointing because the previous reviews of this place said that they used fresh potato. They were not very fresh. This may be the most disappointing part of my whole meal, as Its hard to find unfrozen potatoes for breakfast. My hash browns stuck together like a greasy, limp patty. Any crunch that they might of contained, had became one sad disappointment. My waffle was your most basic, generic tasting waffle. There's nothing special about it, which made me feel bad for THEM. They really could do so much more here without very much effort. A couple shakes of seasoning, fresh fruit, flavored cream cheese, chocolate, the list goes on. Breakfast is such an easy meal, you need to do something special to stand out. The prices make you believe that you will be getting that added touch. They are having an issue with fruit flies as well. I really hope they begin adding the little extra touch that the food needs to stand out from the rest. It WILL increase business, good ratings, and customer satisfaction overall. I'm excited to see what great thing this establishment has to offer the community, going forward. I may eat here again for lunch or dinner.

This was the first time we ate here but, seriously, not very good. I ordered fried over med eggs with meatloaf. The over mediums were fried on a grill that was too hot and they were brown on the outside but uncooked on the inside. The whites were still runny. The meatloaf was dry with a lot of filler in it. The sausage was good. The hash browns were homemade and decent except the potatoes were over boiled and mushy. The front door was left standing open and the restaurant was full of flys and gnats. My latte was good. My toast was good.

Awesome fresh food. Some really unique combinations. We had chicken & waffles, and BBQ bacon hamburger and fresh cut fries. Actually located on West main street just off the square.

Hands down, this is the best place to patronize in the Granville-Newark-Heath area. Food and coffee: The coffee is outstanding. Reasonably priced. Good refills. Many different varieties available every morning I've visited. I believe the coffee comes from a local, Newark roaster which supports community development. I've only had the breakfast items here. The eggs and bacon are so good, and are from local farms. The sausages come in link or patty form, and the patties are shaped by hand, fresh. The waffle is a nice thick circular waffle, perfectly crunchy, always good with real maple syrup. The potatoes are either home fries or hash browns. The hash browns are actual shredded potatoes shaped into patties (Who does that? No one else does that! It's awesome.). The veggie omelet is also tasty. The veggies are fresh and plentiful. Ethos: This is an endeavor to support.
