Kewpee Hamburgers Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

Kewpee was first brought to my attention by my accounting professor who is a native of Lima. He told us the story of how Dave Thomas of Wendy's got his blueprint from Kewpee. In December, I had to made trips from Columbus, OH to Detroit and in doing so, I made a side trip to Kewpee. Our first visit was at the downtown location and the bustling and friendly atmosphere in the cozy confines made for a unique dining experience. The burgers, fries, pies, chili, and drinks were delicious as to be expected since it was freshly made to order. The decor and ambiance coupled by the food takes one back to a different era. Maybe that's why the sign on the wall reads, "Your Granpappy ate here." I definitely recommend this to the foodie who enjoys good quality food that is only to be upstaged by the overall dining experience.

These are my Favorite Hamburgers. If you are passing through Lima OH and dont stop for a Kewpee burger its your loss. Great service and hot fresh burgers made to order.

I am picky when it comes to burgers. I find most fast food and casual restaurants serve their burgers way too greasy or too under seasoned for my liking, but Kewpee hits the nail on the head perfectly. The bun is always unbelievably soft, the meat is fresh and charred deliciously around the edges, and I LOVE getting green olives on top! Their fries and milkshakes are even amazing. So old fashioned...and so delicious! Definitely recommended to all.

I had heard about Kewpee but don't get to Lima much. Finally had the chance and stopped, and I'll be back every time I'm anywhere nearby. The burgers are good, and a little different- seasoned meat? Prices are great. But the draw for me: sugar cream pie. Best I've had next to my family's. Their other pies are great too, but you just don't find sugar cream pie very many places. It's a Lima institution and I wish they had locations closer to Columbus (well, I see Bellefontaine.) It's a local institution and deserves to be known all over.

I grew up in Lima but have no memory of going to Kewpees as a kid, but when I went back for a visit in 1986 our old neighbors told me our families used to go there all the time and I just had to go there while I was in town. I do remember always liking Kewpee Dolls and that is probably why--they were planted in my subconscious! I went to the one on Allentown Rd, near our old neighborhood, not realizing this was a newer one and wouldn't have been the one we used to go to. But I still loved it--cheap everything and the desserts looked so good I had to try three of them! You can't find Sugar Cream Pie in California unless you make it yourself! Their pecan pie was pretty respectable and the malt was yummy! My kids and I all had a good time. Later when I found out that was a new one I went to the one downtown and enjoyed it too. though the parking was inconvenient--had to park about a block away. I made sure to go to the one downtown when I was back in '97 with my family and it was great then too. This past October, 2007, I was back to Lima again and headed for the first Kewpee's I found--the one on Bellafontaine--by myself this trip. I still enjoyed it, having burger, fries, small malt and both sugar cream and Mincemeat Pie (you won't find that in Cali either). I think I ate sugar cream pie in every restaurant I went to that carried it the whole trip! I even bought a Kewpee's coffee cup an saved the bag for a keepsake. The next day I went back to the one on Allentown and ate there again. So much for variety! So I guess this is my review of all three Kewpee's! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ke…

I will keep review short as there are many reviews. I've ate a lot of burgers in my time and these are average at best. I love small town local places that have history. Reading the other reviews I believe that either the 5 star ratings are because they grew up with Kewpee or they haven't eaten much outside of the local area.

  • Jeremy H.

Pretty Mediocre if you ask me. The only reason I give it three stars instead of two is that it is a local restaurant with several locations and the stores have character. Besides that I wasn't impressed. I've had hamburgers taste better from vending machines. If you want water instead of soda, then they give you a small, very very small cup, to fill up yourself from the water fountain. Pretty lame. I'm hoping to find something better in Lima next time I am there.

I've been eating this for 25 years and it still doesn't get old. Super fresh meat, plenty of toppings and some great fries to dip in the malt. (Yeah, that's right.) This is Americana.

Kewpee's is perfectly alright, but I think people let the nostalgia factor get in the way. The burgers themselves are fine, but the buns they use are pretty underwhelming. I know this is Limaland sacrilege, but I think Wendy's has far better buns. In fact, for burgers alone, I think Wendy's is better, but far less consistently good than Kewpee's. Kewpee's pies and fries are far better, however. The malts leave me kinda cold. (ha ha)

Easy from highway for a quick drive through. Great burger with olives, fries and a malt. Love it.

Kewpee is a local favorite. For a while, their buns were kind of hard and their burgers a little small. However, they've gotten back to hot, fresh beef and soft buns. They purchase buns and beef locally, making it a great local supporter. The prices are higher than you'll pay at McDonald's or another fast food restaurant, but the quality is higher, you're supporting local business, and local farmers. The food is always excellent and hot. I highly suggest giving Kewpee a try!

Awesome food. Way better than Wendys.. If you are ever in Ohio and Michigan this is a must ...

Best Burgers going, although Steak N Shake is pretty good also. I think Wendy's got their ideas from Kewpee but, anymore, Wendy's is so awful anymore unless you catch it just right. Staff is friendly, efficient, and the food is fantastic. This is a must stop if you are going anywhere near Lima. I've lived all over the country and I think they make the best burgers in the US. Too bad you can only get them in Lima, that I know of. These burgers aren't fancy, the decor isn't fancy, but they are just consistently good burgers, fries, frosties, pies, and service. There isn't a whole lot on the menu oustide of what I just mentioned, but what they have is well worth it. If you want some tricked up fancy burger smothered in God knows what, this isn't your place.

This is one of my favorite stops for food in Lima. when ever I'm driving by i have to stop. It is just a simple burger place but has great food at a great price. It has the charm of a small town place as well. so if you drive through Lima and want food this is the place to go.

I know I should be giving five stars to one of the Lima Kewpees (it IS the headquarters, after all), but I have to say that the one in Racine, Wisconsin is just a *tad* better (but only a tad and only for the lunch counter ambiance & Kewpee doll decor). This Kewpee is still great and definitely has some tasty hamburgers! Reading MothersHelper D.'s review makes me really bummed that I didn't try the sugar cream pie (which I've never even seen before), but damn, I was so full after a burger, fries and a small chocolate malt (the original Frosty), I just couldn't do it! The malt, though... ohh, the malt! It always steals the show. The small was a perfectly-sized dessert and cost only a dollar for smooth, rich, creamy delight. I'm not quite sure if it's made from real dairy or not, but it is waaaaay better than a Wendy's Frosty. Take that, stupid dollar menus at other fast food restaurants! Super cheap, tasty food, friendly service and a franchise history older than McDonald's... How could you not love the "naked baby restaurant"?

Never been to Lima, OH before and don't know when I will be again. I'm glad I read the reviews and tried this spot. This is type of place makes you proud to live in America! Good burger, fries and best Frosty I've ever had. I got all of that for only just over 4$. Don't know what people are talking about saying its a bit pricey for fast food. Service is friendly and food is made to order. If you are passing through town or close by stop by for a "Hamburger pickle on top! Makes your heart go flippity flop!"

Driving into Columbus this morning, I was really bummed that I would not have time to have a Kewpee burger. Lo and behold, this place opens at 7 am for octogenerians to drink coffee and eat donuts! This place is the inspiration for Wendy's, and is like your mom's cooking compared to getting the same thing at a restaurant. They cooked me a burger at 730 am, and fries. It was less than $7 for two burgers with all the fixings and fries. It looks just the same as the last time I ate there 10 years ago. It was just as good as when I ate there 25 years ago with my grandfather. If fate ever frowns upon you and sends you to Lima, OH, take solace in the fact that you can enjoy one of the best fast food hamburgers to ever exist.

Excellent iced tea and fries! Pies are good as well and special flavors change monthly! The meat has a homemade feel to it and is ground daily! Chili is rather bland. Our son loves the fish sandwiches as well! The morning omlettes that are available are excellent as well. Hamburgers are offered even in the morning as well. Kind of pricey for fast food, a double is over $4.00 and their meat patty's are very thin.

The burgers are okay but definitely not understanding how people from Lima say these are famous and the best. They are just okay and priced decent other than that wouldn't go out of my way for them.

Kewpee is a Lima institution. It is so old-timey and cute. At first, I wasn't so crazy about it (because I was weird and wasn't really into hamburgers...WHAT), but the charm has really grown on me over the years. First of all, I think everyone who works here is over 60 - the sweetest old ladies. Then, there's the fact that they use Miracle Whip, which is my favorite magical chemical substance. You come here to eat hamburgers, of the skinny little griddle patty variety, and tell the nice old ladies what toppings you would like. For sugar, the frosty and lemon crunch pie are great options. Just remember, the soda sizes haven't been supersized, so a medium is actually pretty small - thirsty folks, take note.

  • Faith G.

One of Lima's greatest mom and pop businesses! Hamburgers made fresh while they support local farmers and 4h-ers! They also have the thickest, creamiest malts!

    (4)
  • A M.

If you're vegetarian, they don't have many options- there's a "vegetable" sandwich that consists of mayo, lettuce, and tomatoes. However, if you ask, they'll add cheese, pickles, banana peppers, and green olives as well. Their menu states that they have frozen yogurt, but it's actually soft serve ice cream, not fro-to. However, their fries and pies make up for both these things. The Sugar pie is absolutely amazing! The pies are a MUST here!

Stopped by to see what the fuss is about. The place is stuck in the 50s and had customers to match. The burgers and fries were decent. The malt was excellent and the coke was, well a coke. I can say I ate at Kewpees complete with the naked plastic babies mounted on the menu board. Won't go out of my way to eat there again.

I drive between Dayton and Bowling Green fairly often, and I searched Yelp for interesting-sounding restaurants that wouldn't require me to stray too far from I-75. Kewpee Hamburgers was one such place, and I gave it a shot tonight. I arrived just before a dinner rush, and ordered a pair of cheeseburgers, a medium malt, a medium fry, and a piece of the sugar cream pie (the Yelp reviews kept mentioning it, so I had to try it.) My order was competently if indifferently taken by a young man probably working there as a summer job, and I waited at the counter for the seasoned kitchen staff to assemble my order. It was up swiftly, and I was soon seated in a sunny window, enjoying a cheeseburger that had no right being as good as it was for less than three bucks. This place may have inspired Wendy's, but a lot was lost in the translation. Kewpee's burgers are superior, no question. Actually coming off an honest grill helps with that, I'm sure, and they tasted like recently-ground meat rather than something that's been in patty form for ages. The toppings were fresh and flavorful. The malt was lovely, definitely frosty-like, but creamier with less of the granularity or ice crystals you sometimes get with a frosty. It also didn't seem in any hurry to melt. I was trying to dip the last of my fries in it, and even the last traces of the malt were fairly stubbornly stiff and cold. I was a bit disappointed with the size of the medium, but I'd seen other reviews warn their beverage sizes have not kept pace with the modern restaurants' so it didn't surprise me much. Their fries aren't special, but they're decent, and certainly better than the usual fast food offerings. I didn't personally care for the sugar cream pie, but that was more the flavor not doing anything for me than any question of quality. The crust was tender, very nicely-done, not over-baked in any way. For what I got, I'm quite happy with the price I paid. I returned to the counter to buy some pie to take away, chatting a bit with the cashier about how many out-of-towners come there. I look forward to trying the other two flavors I selected. If you're passing Lima along I-75 and you happen to be hungry, definitely give Kewpee a try! They're a far better choice than another Mickey-D's value menu raid, and their malt will have you scraping the cup for every last creamy trace.

I am not sure if Kewpee is as big of a deal to people who are not from Lima but I grew up going to Kewpee. I do not think there is a better hamburger fast food out there. They keep it simple and stick to what they are good at, hamburgers, fries and a frosty. We were in town for my grandma's funeral, who actually use to work at the original Kewpee and I had to sneak away to go there twice that weekend. I even had the opportunity to teach my wife and nephew about dipping your fries in your frosty, which is a must. Adds the perfect sweetness to your fries and just a little salt to your frosty. I wouldn't suggest this at some where like Wendy's, it only works at Kewpee! Kewpee hamburger with Pickle on Top! Makes Your Heart Go Flippity Flop!

If your passing through Lima like myself, then this is one stop you should make... especially if you have kids. I had a double burger, fries and a frosty for $8.

The burger was delicious just like everyone said it was. The fries were disappointing and cold. I am glad I tried it but doubt I will return.

What can I say staff was great. The gals made my day. I ordered a double with everything because i couldn't decide it all Sounded so good! I told her I needed it to go as I was traveling back to Indy, are you sure the cashier asked you would not want to ruin that nice white shirt. A double with everything can get a little messy. So I took what they recommended . It was delicious, White shirt made it home clean. LOL

For people who aren't familiar with Kewpee, this is the original fast food burger. Great quality ingredients and a menu that doesn't change, because it's been so successful. This place seems to be the inspiration for In-and-out and the Wendy's types. The decor at this location is very different. You almost feel like your eating in a food court or hospital cafeteria. It's not awful by any means, just outdated compared to your typical fast food burger joint. But there is plenty of seating.

I'm not exactly sure what the smell that hits you when you walk in the door is (best I can figure is some sort of Cold War era disinfectant that still being manufactured in a former Soviet republic like Latvia or Estonia), but you get used to it soon enough. Believe it or not, you should not automatically pass on the dirt cheap breakfast offerings, but most people come for the burgers. They are exactly as advertised and then some. They are quite lovely and DO make your heart go flippity-flop (or maybe that's the toxic nerve agent in the cleaning solution). Either way, you will leave there only a few dollars lighter and much happier than you were going in. The downtown location has the same food and cleaner air, but it's further from the freeway which means you get to see more of scenic Lima. Decisions, decisions...

I grew up in Lima, Ohio and have been eating Kewpee burgers since I had teeth. They are delicious! Kewpee grinds the beef fresh daily and grills the patties to perfection. If you want the authentic Kewpee experience eat at the downtown Kewpee. It's been in business since the 1920s and I won't swear to it but some of the gals working there have been their from the start. lol

Great burgers! Old school deliciousness with reasonable prices. Loved it!

A small chain, its operation is mirrored off of Wendy's, and in fact, even tastes like it. This location is a little dated, and ran by older women who can be a little slow, but very friendly. They also offer pies for desert...nice touch. This locale also seems to be the "meeting place" for retirees who want to talk and drink coffee. Nothing stellar about it, but if you want nice fresh burger, stop by if youre in the area.

  • Bulldog C.

It is an average meal, with sub par service. I can't believe that people praise this place so highly. I was not impressed at all. I think people that are stuck here in Lima choose to praise places like this for average service and average food.

Local, independent fast-food joints (and small chains) are a rare breed these days, and I'd much rather patronize them than the national chains when on the road and pressed for time. Kewpee is apparently a long-time Lima, Ohio institution, and there are only a couple of locations outside of this town. Although we went downtown to the Allen County Museum, we missed out on the original downtown Kewpee location, which apparently is a classic. But this one has a retro feel of its own. It's a big sprawling, old-school burger joint with plastic chair seating that reminds me of the Varsity back in my hometown and in Atlanta. The interior feels circa 1965. Not surprisingly, Kewpee is punctuated by a lot of kewpie doll imagery. There are in fact a couple of big naked babies nailed to the wall at this location, which is kinda creepy, but in an amusing way. Unfortunately, the Varsity back in Georgia sux, no matter what another native Georgian might tell you. And unfortunately, Kewpee, while it doesn't suck, still isn't all that great food-wise. The burger patties, although purportedly from freshly delivered ground beef, are pretty slim and don't have much flavor. Cheese on the burger was barely melted. Still, it's hard to complain too much about a $2.25 sandwich. And the fries were pretty good. Also, Kewpee still hasn't been clued in to the fact that restaurants are charging the outrageous sums of $1.75, $2.00, and even $2.25 for sodas, and actually getting away with it. Here, you can get a giant carbonated sugar water for $1.10. This Kewpee location is just off I-75. Give it a try.

I totally understand why people tell me to stop by kewpee burger when I'm in Lima. Finally got to try the well know burger joint and it totally lived up to expectations. I burger and fries were tasty but chili could use some recipe modifications. The chili seemed to have a cheap gravy type mouth feel like the gravy you would get in the lunchroom. The regulars must love it so don't let my review steer you from trying it.

After years of curiosity, I hit this Kewpee on a recent trip. From people's reviews, I was expecting something legendary, but my double cheeseburger was just good. The meat, toppings, and bun were all fresh and it was cooked well. Like Five Guys, I think it could use more seasoning. The meat also had a number of gristly bites. I can think of three other fast food burgers and one quick service burger off the top of my head that I like better. The chili had a good flavor, and did not have any yucky stuff like bell peppers or onions in it, however, it was very salty. I am usually impervious to salt, and probably eat way more of it than I should. It is very rare that I find any food to be too salty, but this chili was. The drive-thru employee was friendly, and the 32oz pop for a dollar was a good deal. Maybe I will give Kewpee another try on a future trip.

Hamburg pickle on top makes your heart go flip-pity flop! I stop in quite often when I'm in Lima. This place is an old school burger joint. 50% of the patrons are drinking coffee with their burgers and all most everyone has a pice of homemade pie for desert. If you aren't in the mood for pie I recommend the shakes. I feel like I'm in the 1950's when I come in. Cool vibe, good food and a great value.

Kewpee is a Lima staple. I used to come here ALL THE TIME in college. I've since moved away but you better believe when I'm back Kewpee is my first stop. I love That the same people work there. I moved away 5 years ago and I see the same women there. It's great! I love their malts! They even have frozen yogurt so I try that sometimes. Obviously the burgers are everything. Delicious!

It's worth a stop to this historic spot. The burgers do remind you of Wendy's style but the flavor is some of the best we've experienced. The fries were good also. We visited Kewpee's on a Sunday afternoon (passing through the area.) We found it on yelp. It was bustling but the staff were pretty efficient. The reason for 4 stars is the place had a need for a deep cleaning, I asked for crispy fries and they said okay but it was clear special order fries weren't an option :-). Condiments were controlled behind the counter. The food was good and the staff were friendly. Definitely need to stop if you're in the area. At least once :-). It's a stop once to experience kind of place.
