Most people that come here are regulars, so I've definitely felt like I've been stared at a few times when I enter. It doesn't get too uncomfortable because you'll soon feel like one of them. Drinks are huge and fair-priced. They have a good selection of brews. But the main thing that I loved about this place was...the Twisted Pelican sandwich. Seriously, all sandwiches should be made on pretzel buns. There's a surprising amount of room at the Red Door and you can reserve the party room for events. The parking lot is a bit small and you may have to park on the street, but I've never had problems.

I'm a lover of a good dive bar -- dive tavern, if you will; however, I didn't really get Red Door. The atmosphere was really laid back, the prices were ok, and the locals were all there... I just couldn't settle in to really love it. The bartender was great. I'm pretty sure he's there all the time. (My bet is he has a cot in the back.) ;) And he made one mean, ass-kickin' apple martini, which I sucked down in less than five minutes (I swear I don't have a drinking issue.) I was surprised to see a little patio in the back too, but it was pretty dark and uninviting the night I went so I didn't take a seat and hang out. I can't vouch for the food either on this round. Maybe next time...

A friend and I were on a quest to try a new bar in Grandview, and the red door of the Red Door Tavern caught our eyes and livers! It's a relatively small place, with room for maybe 10 patrons at the bar and a handful of tables (though signage indicates that there is another room, primarily used for parties.) There's just a handful of drafts, but there was a CBC and a Goose Island, so we were happy. The beer came in really tall glasses, which amused me for whatever reason. There's a pretty spacious patio outback with a nice view of residential Grandview. Definitely a spot I look forward to trying again!

Their Albanian wings are 5 star all the way. Must try if you like wings. Great local establishment. Sandwiches are good and there is a nice patio.

I went in on a Sunday evening. A server and bartender were working now the entire floor themselves, attentively but rather slowly. I got the sense that the server was overwhelmed, but that's probably because she had finals the following week. . . The burger was good, if spice less. Condiments were dull, and the thick cut fries were just as run-of-the-mill. Ambiance suggests that, while the menu has a few interesting burger and sandwich options, their real focus is the well-apportioned bar.

Red Door is our go-to for a low-key hangout. The food here is darned good - their Pelican sandwich was once a rarity in the city - a sandwich on a pretzel bun. Not unique now, but still one of the best. Beer is always ice-cold and staff are friendly. I think we've been here at every time o'day - early on a Sunday, in the Friday crush, late-late Saturday (for pie!) and about 5:30 on any other day of the week. No matter what time it is, Red Door is consistently solid all-around.

So we used to frequent this place quite a bit because we love the atmosphere, location, and the food. We stopped going altogether because of the service. The last 3 or 4 times we were there, the service was absolutely terrible. The manager was notified once of these times and was very unapologetic about what had happened. We were with a large group of folks one night and it took over an hour to get our food and once we did receive it, it was wrong. In the meantime, the server never came out to apologize or ask if we needed drink refills. It just seems like every time we were there, it was something. It was always a bother and we never just got decent service. I really am hoping I can convince the hubby to go back sometime in the future in the hopes that service has gotten better because I really do like the place!

This place is a dive, but I have to say that the Italian sub I had was good. There was some sausage or something on it--I can't remember exactly what the menu said--but they did not skimp on the meat. Nothing fancy here, but you can get a good meal and a drink at a decent price.

This is a good dive-resturant/bar hole in the wall type place. Went for dinner around 7:30 pm. A lot of fairly drunk people crowded the bar, clearly neighborhood watering hole haha. There was only a few TVs surrounding the bar area, meanwhile they have a separate room which hosts a more "formal" dining area w/ no televisions. Odd for this type of establishment. Food was very good, service was just okay.

Red Door Tavern is in the building hugging close 5th Avenue just north of Grandview Heights. It has a decidedly New Englandish appeal, at least how New England exists in the zeitgeist; it has dark red woodwork, Paul Revere lantern light fixtures, revolutionary war musket tacked on the long ceiling beams, a Cheers like semi-octagon bar, and one large landscape painting of a Puritan inspired village. One feels like it would be the place for Cape Code lobster or sizzling crab legs, but is a nice dive bar attracting the in-and-outs of 5th by Northwest locals. Said to be the oldest institution in the area, Red Door is known for food. Smaller than it looks from the outside, it has a cozy booth dominated dinning room and a comfortable bar. It was my first time trying it out after driving by it for 20-years. In the mood for hamburger, I ordered one with mushrooms. The mushrooms were juicy and sautéed perfectly. Yum. It came with thick fries that bordered on potato wedges and were equally scrumptious. The bugger, though, was less so; a bit overcooked, it lacked anything more than a homemade patty. It was more than eatable, but relatively, I rank it in the bottom half in the city of hamburger giants. Note though friends have had other choices that they say better represents Red Door, as well as Gold Elite Mike G who suggests Twisted Eagles, a ham and Swiss cheese melt. So don't let my one meal represent the quality of other choices; can't blame them for wilting under the shadow of Thurman's, Flip Side, Rossi, ect. Still, this place is worth a good rating. It seemed toned down and easy going. A place for chatting and socializing. The music at the right volume to catalyze conversation but not overbearing, the dual TV with games ( not sure if the featuring of Boston sports was purposely done) were kept down. Though close quarters mean bumping into patrons headed for the restroom if you sit on the side by the passway, though the social comfort of the place neutralizes that slight annoyance. Parking may be a problem. They do have a small lot out back but that can fill during rushes. The side street is cramped with parked vehicles on either side up towards King. If you don't mind a short walk, you may also find a spot in the other side streets parallel to it. Nice place to spend a low key weekend evening.

The hidden gem info grandview! This place is legit, the pub fare is tasty and adequate, the servers and bartenders are awesome people and take care of their costumers. You can't go wrong here if you are a local in grandview! If you are visiting, can't go wrong either!

Been going here since the '60s, so I probably had unrealistic expectations of the good old days, when the Door was truly a Grandview destination with great food. My last two visits, I had the Twisted Eagle (ham & cheese on pretzel), and their signature dish, the Hillbilly Cheeseburger (fried bologna). The latter was pretty good, along with optional mini-tater tots (although a bit pricey at $2.50 extra) Neighborhood tavern ambience, and good selection of craft beers. Good for watching a ball game, Jackets hockey, or the World Cup. Really need to upgrade the bathroom cleanliness though, a real turn-off. They are in the Entertainment Book for a free meal, and accept Golden Buckeye cards,

Ate here for a early dinner. Hamburger and fries were awesome. The appletinis were very delish and stirred to my satisfaction. This is my second time here, and i totally forgot how rustic it is. Very clean and quaint, red door tavern delivered again for us. Thanks again !!!

Nice night option for food Was looking for a place to grab some food after work and stumbled upon a place that I pass all the time, but had never gone to. Red Door is about 2 minute's drive from me yet I had never even considered going there (not sure why). I called in a carryout order and the person on the phone was good about making sure everything was right before disconnecting. By the time I arrived the food was ready so I grabbed it and went home to try it out. I had the Arlington Burger (bacon, barbeque sauce, cheddar cheese) and switched to sweet potato fries instead of the usual fries. I am not a fan of the upcharge for switching: it is 2.50 to change to sweet potato fries even though both fry selections are listed as the same price as side dishes. Anyways the sweet potato fries were very good, the exact same kind that they have at Tilted Kilt. The burger was a good representation of a bbq bacon burger. The bbq was the star and everything else fell in line as it should. This experience is a definite 3.5 stars if I could list as such.

Worst restaurant experience. Took forever to be acknowledged. Then she forgot a drink. She never came back to take our order after waiting 20 minutes. Had to track someone down to take our order and then she was acting like we were a bother! Food finally came and it was horrible. My husband had a fish sandwich with a stale bun n wilted lettuce. My meatloaf was cold an potatoes uncooked. Then the waitress had the nerve to tell us she only works one day a week. I will NEVER Be back!! Syanara Red Door!

Tough call on how many stars to give this place. Kinda want to give it like 2 because it is so grimy but i just have so much fun here i have to say 3 . Used to come here when i was in high school and not sayin' how long ago but it's been a while. Lol. Anyway, menus and walls are grubby.Don't think they have been wiped down in a loong time. Bathroom definitely needs update. maybe fix the locks on the stalls. Service is friendly and pretty quick. The rueben eggrolls are really tasty and the potato skins are good, Mushrooms i think would be awesome except they have been about a minute too long in the deep fryer both times we have had them. $3 beers at happy hour which is always a good deal! Oh--no wifi!

This is the epitome of the neighborhood joint. It feels like it's been there forever, the patrons know all the staff, and strangers are welcomed. I was on a first date so I had enough awkwardness going on already, it was nice to be greeted warmly. :-) Tuesday nights seem to be a good night to drop in. It was very quiet and meatloaf night. We were there for the burgers. I had the "Arlington burger" which was fantastic and gloriously messy. My date had the "Red Door burger" and he scarfed it down quickly which, I suppose, is a pretty big endorsement. All-in-all, a good neighborhood joint with good food and solid prices.

Great local bar with a great outdoor patio for the summer. They have the best $5 burger night I've been to, even though they don't give you steak fries anymore. Expect to meet strangers and have some good times

I ordered the Twisted Pelican, which was voted one of the top 30 sandwiches in Columbus. My hopes were high for this grilled turkey sandwich on a twisted pretzel bun. When it came out it was grilled turkey deli meat on a croissant. The sandwich was not bad, but not at all what I expected, and definitely not a top 30 sandwich anywhere. The ambiance is excellent for an old school dive bar, and the beer list was good. I was there for lunch during training for work, so I didn't have a beer. I would go back and try something different.

Pretty good place, with pretty good food. It is a bit "divey" but the people have always been nice. They have some good drink specials and good sandwiches. I like the back patio...go out back and enjoy a quiet night outside.

I have been a long time regular at Red Door. I always liked the old school atmosphere, friendly wait staff, good food quality with unique items on the menu, reasonable drink prices. They redid the menu eliminating entrees and some old favorites, upped the prices on drinks and food to the caliber of higher tier restaurants, without upgrading anything with the physical space, food, or beverages. If you order a sandwich or burger, you have no idea whether it is coming with chips or fries or if anything can be substituted. I won't be back.

I can honestly say that I have been going to the Red Door Tavern since I was a little kid (30+ years ago!!!!) as it was always one of parents favorite neighborhood places. The place was an institution. Old men and ladies running the place, same menu for thirty or forty years, Ruth baking fresh pies everyday and the same quality food every time you went. Those days are gone, the place has been bought and sold a few times in the last decade or so. It still looks the same as it always has, which is nice, and the ownership has kept a few of the menu staples - the Rueben (still excellent), the Twisted Eagle (great sandwich), the Thing and few others. Kudos to management for clinging to the past. What this consistency through the years has allowed, is for the place to remain a neighborhood hangout. The bar has solid bartending. several good beers on tap and a mix of older locals, hipsters and couples enjoying themselves. The menu has been updated and is still good bar food, but I can't say is anything really that special. The best thing about this place is still the atmosphere and its ability to still be a place to hang for the local peeps. For that I will always be comfortable going there.

The feta dip was AMAZING. Just the right amount of spice and loads of flavor. Service was good, employees always nice. Liked the patio! Got the turkey sandwich with the pretzel bun- delicious. Wasn't a fan of the meatloaf. Also, no cider selection. When I drink, cider is my go to and they didn't have any! Great mixed drinks though.

I've headed in here a few times with friends. Always fun, the atmosphere is great. Service is always excellent. The food menu is solid, and I haven't found anything bad on it. (And they have tater tots!) Price is very reasonable. I'll definitely keep this one on my list of watering holes!

Poor service and greasy food. The appetizers we ordered were soggy and tasted like nothing but old fryer oil. They were out of almost everything we originally ordered and the server had no knowledge of what was going on. The food took forever to come out and she was slow getting back to us with anything. On all points this establishment failed in my mind. Definitely will not be returning.

We went on a lonely Wednesday night. Not much action inside, but the patio was full on a very warm night. I used to come to The Door in the 70's; they were one of the very few bars to serve bottled Heineken (when it was top shelf beer). Not much has changed. One good change though, the menu is more extensive than those days, what with grilled fish. Spouse had the Talapia, and it was great. I had the BLT and tomato soup, both perfect. I'll give them a plus for menu expansion; they are well beyond the bologna specials; but it's good they keep those choices on the menu as well. The bathrooms are in need of updating. They look bad, but not because of cleanliness. They just look old. Wait staff is prompt and nice, but could use some menu training. My guess is the local veterans know the menu from memory. The bar is still top notch. We are fans, but there is a heck of a lot more competition in the area than there was in 1975.

Cheap eats, but nothing really to write home about. Known for their bean soup and pies. Recently dropped by for a bit of lunch. My water glass had something stuck to the outside of it. (Yuck) The waitress quickly replaced. Service and kitchen were really slow. In fact, noticed one table that got up and walked out because they had waited so long that nobody took their order. Food was okay. The person I was with said he had better Reuben's here. Could not order a mixed drink from the bar area ... something about broken plumbing (???). Others in the place had beer though. Never asked if we wanted pie. All the way around, it seemd to be an off afternoon for them. Have had better service and food before. So, giving them 3 stars.

Nice private patio. Great sandwiches. Onion rings are proper! Friendly service, though can be real slow. Neighborhood-y and a bit grimy (which I like, hence 4 stars for character, though I can understand why others might be put off by this.) Good for a quick meal and a couple beers. Beer selection is just ok.

Stopped by here for some lunch with my son. He had some spaghetti which looked pretty over cooked and watery, but my salad was pretty decent and my burger was good. The service was good, but we were just about the only people there and we ate at the bar. Altogether I'd say this is your average bar with a little better than average bar food. Not too much else to say about it.

Good burger! Strange service. Like our lovely CM, I also don't really get Red Door. I've been here before, and was nonplussed by the meatloaf sammie, weird service, and general sense of something lacking. The boy's good friend who now lives in the southwest likes to come here when he's home visiting, and so it's one of those comforting places to the boy, so we headed over to Red Door tonight in search of "big juicy burgers," which we found. However, we also found spotty service and a lack of yellow mustard, which in my book earns you automatic points off. ;) It was a bit of a rough night, so we started off with a beer and a shot each. We ordered said items, and obviously looked in dire need of said items - bit the waitress disappeared for quite a while - and it really wasn't that busy, and this place really isn't that big... she finallllly came back with our well bourbon and Miller lights about seven minutes later and mumbled something or other... I'm not really sure what was going on. She was nice enough, but it was just strange. We weren't really ready to order because of the matter at hand, so she gave us some more time, but once we ordered, again, we waited quite a long time for a couple of rare burgers and a quesadilla. Anyway, the food was great for bar food. The quesadilla was actually average, but the burgers were pretty fantastic for being from a bar. I got the bacon blue cheese burger and the boy got the swiss mushroom burger, and we cut them in half and exchanged halves (we're adorable, puke). I am excessively full now because I definitely ate most of my food, including most of the fries... mostly because of my excessive love of yellow mustard (however, the bottle at our table was mostly empty and since our waitress was always MIA, the boy made friends with the table next to us and charmed their mustard away from them). Anyway, great food! Yum. The boy says the reuben is also amazing. Service, not so much.

I went here tonight with a friend because I had a BOGO coupon from the Entertainment Book. I hadn't been here in a long time, but remembered liking the patio, so I thought it was worth returning. Only one server was working tonight (it was a Sunday, maybe someone else called in sick?) but we sat for 15 minutes before getting a menu, and we had to flag the waitress down. I had to ask twice for her to bring 1000 island dressing. I got the Pelican sandwich, which I think another reviewer raved about--it was very bland. If I were to go back, I would get a burger, based on other reviewers' suggestions, but I don't see me initiating a return visit.

Friendly and welcoming neighborhood tavern with solid pub grub, a nice selection of beers, and comfortable patio. Usually has a "buy one get one free" coupon in the local mailers every month. Our favorites at this place include the Reuben Sandwich and the Fish and Chips (probably the second best fish and chips in town, in my humble opinion). We have always found the service to be friendly and prompt. Nice selection of kids' menu items, including the famous "Dinosaur Bites" (chicken nuggets shaped like dinosaurs).

I used to really like eating here but then that was several years ago before new management. Three of us went and were quite disappointed to find that the menu is mainly sandwiches and burgers. We wanted dinners. We ordered the special, Chicken and broccoli alfredo. Three customers arrived after we did, two tables of two and one table of three. They ordered burgers and got their food right away. We ordered specials and waited nearly forty minutes. Their wait staff was at their tables frequently and ours showed up when it was convenient for her. She was nice but had such a heavy accent we could barely understand what she said. The alfredo was awful, thin, runny and close to flavorless, the chicken so overdone it was difficult to chew and didn't seem to have been spiced at all. The burgers looked good and the onion rings looked fantastic but since I didn't have them I can't judge the flavor. If you like a good burger place with a bar you'll probably like this place but it has officially been removed from my personal list of favorite places to eat.

Most people need to learn the difference between a local bar & dive bar. The Red Door is a great local bar/tavern that caters to the neighborhood...a great bar area to the east with a rounded bar (makes it easier for locals to argue with one another across the bar) and plenty of TVs for the big game, a dining area in the center to relax-eat, & a back party room (includes another great bar area) that can be rented. The Red Door has everything you need, including above average food. Street parking, a small lot, with multiple entrances makes it easy to grab a drink and it's close enough to stumble home.

  • Neal B.

"Please Seat Yourself" reads the sign as you walk in the front door. Sadly that hands off approach seems to extend to all aspects of their service. After 10 minutes of trying to flag down a server to even be greeted and be given menus, we gave up and went elsewhere. Doubt we'll be back. Would give zero stars but evidently that's not an option on Yelp.

We visited Red Door Tavern because we had a BOGO coupon for the sandwiches and it's only a few blocks from our apartment. We walked in and surprisingly it was completely packed in the dining area. We sat at a small table in the bar and the bartender took care of us. Besides being super friendly, we received our food very quickly. They even have free popcorn!! My husband got the chicken parm sandwich and I ordered the roast beef slider sandwiches. Both were great and came with fries. We also ordered alcohol and a coffee. Our total WITH the BOGO coupon, was still around $29 which I thought was a bit expensive. Overall, it was okay but I don't see us returning super soon.

Red Door? Is this still open? That's probably the question passer-by's have. YES!, it is! Red Door is the little neighborhood bar that could. With the recent addition of the party room, this is the perfect place to host a party! Give Xhevier a call to make arrangements. They can provide food, or you can bring in your own. During the week, you can catch all the regulars bellied up to the bar. Some of them have been coming here for over 15 years! To be honest, the food is okay. Nothing spectacular, but not bad. To me, Red Door is more of the kind of place to share some app's and cold beers. Side note: it's a popcorn and peanuts free, kind of place. Sometimes that's good to know.
