I'm not into hockey, and this is overwhelmingly a hockey bar, but I dig it. Reasons: - I've had amazing bartenders every time I've been here - Free popcorn - Passable beer selection (bottles and draft) - Fantastic people watching

This bar reminds me a lot of every other bar in the Arena district except that its a HOCKEY bar!!! I love hockey I have seasons tickets to the Jackets. I wish they would have some air hockey or maybe the old school hockey game that has a huge plastic dome on it, you know it. Other than that its pretty awesome. Fun fact- the urinals have pictures of other teams to pee on! SWEET!

Headed here to meet up with others before going to the hockey game. As all the other reviews will tel lyou, this is a true hockey bar. If you do not like loud crowds, too many tvs and guys in ill fitting shirts this is NOT the place for you. fast service for our large group. Reasonable prices and easy stroll across the ped bridge to get to game.

I have to couch my review a bit. If you are a hockey fan - or even a sports fan in general - the R Bar is a 5 star slam dunk. If you're the type who likes a quieter bar with little to no sports stuff, you should really consider a different one. R Bar has been one of the big hockey bars in town since they opened, and following their move to the other side of the Arena plaza (they were formerly off Marconi Blvd.), if anything, they've kicked it up a notch. The staff is friendly, and either a hockey fan or more than capable of keeping up a conversation with one as they go about their business. Seating is good and the walls are covered with hockey memorabilia - not just the Blue Jackets and Ohio State, but also the old Columbus Chill, Checkers, and other former minor league teams who once played in the capital city. (Even a framed jersey from the 'Columbus Mad Cows' stunt the Chill did back in '98!) In addition to 4 massive big screens for each side of the actual bar area, there are smaller sets located around the bar and a large projection screen at the far wall for large events. The beer and liquor selection is more than reasonable, and the recent addition of food turns them from being a pre-game or after game stop to a full service destination in the arena district. While the menu is relatively basic (sandwhiches, pizzas, burgers, nachos, etx), the food itself is good for what you're getting and quite reasonably priced. If there is a word of caution to anyone looking to check the place out, it is that R Bar is one of, if not the, main post-game desitnation for a large group of CBJ fans. On game nights, expect the bar to be packed, loud, and for service on both food and drinks to slow down appropriately as the staff deals with the heavy attendance.

Good place, Great hockey atmosphere. But unless you are a huge hockey fan, there isn't much to write home about. Just a typical bar. They do have some ok beers on tap. And during the summer it has a pretty good patio, but it is kinda small and just ends up getting filled up with smokers. If you get there early enough it isn't bad. All n All, if you are going to go to a hockey game, make a stop there, you'll be in good company.

Decent hockey themed sports bar. Free Pop Corn (which ran out at some point the evening I was there) is the stand out feature. Nothing special in terms of beer selection and the food menu was a little lacking. Standard bar far but nothing that jumps out at you. Pizza/Burgers/Wraps and that's about it. I had their wings which were average tasting but larger than normal. (The drumettes were practically the size of an actual drum stick). I went there for a Hockey game though, and not the food, and in the case they delivered. Most of the TVs will play Blue Jackets games if one is on but they were happy to switch a TV for me to play a game from my home team. They have one large projection screen in a corner, TVs behind the bar and miscellaneous TVs scattered about. There were definitely some blind spots and a few seating areas with no TV close by, but there are definitely site lines from every seat. All in all, a decent place to catch a game.

This place reminds me of a blue collar version of Bar Louie. I have no idea where my mind formed that idea, but it just did. If you ever want to be around hockey fans and watch hockey, or pregame before a hockey game, or celebrate after a hockey game, then this is the place. There's hockey memorabilia adorning the walls and even seat backs. There's a pool table. There's a popcorn machine. There's always some good beer special, which typically includes Labatt. I was blown away at how good their pizza is. It's like crazy good. I'm also always surprised at how nice and clean their bathroom is. There's a good vibe of people here and the testosterone definitely outweighs the estrogen levels, but it's not meat head or aggressive testosterone, which is pleasant. I've been over dressed here a few times and that will get you some looks but whatever, no biggie.

Best hockey bar in town, food's pretty decent and service is always good. Go Jackets!

I'm not a hockey fan, but sometimes I end up here...usually on my way to an event in the Arena District, or at the very end of the night. It's scary both times. R Bar is a quintessential sports bar centered around hockey. There are TVs everywhere, so if you're not into buying expensive CBJ tickets but just want to drink with some friends, this isn't a bad stop. Coors Light and other popular beers are a-plenty. I wouldn't say I like R Bar, but it's conveniently located and it makes for some really hilarious people watching. I would give it a shot over places like Brothers or the Park Street Complex (minus the Tavern, which isn't so bad).

My wife and I stopped in this place for some food and a beer before a concert at Nationwide Arena. With thousands of concert goers coming to the area and Bengals/Browns/Steelers all playing on TV the bar had ONE person working. She was working her ass off but being both waitress and bartender for that many people was overwhelming. We ordered some wings and a couple of burgers. The spicy garlic sauce on the wings was tasty but the meat was a little rubbery. The burgers were probably the driest I have ever had. Cooked beyond well done.

This may be a hockey bar, but they are also an amazing every other sport bar when there's not hockey on. Just popped over to watch the NCAA tournament and there was a nice crowd of people but not too crazy. Probably gets to be too much during CBJ hockey games. Love the bartenders. They are really nice and quick. Free popcorn get it's own star on my rating. I just love popcorn and beer. Also, we extremely surprised at how much I liked their chicken quesadilla. I'm VERY picky about my quesadilla's and theirs was pretty darn good. Also, decent bathrooms and lots of TVs. All in all a really great sports bar in a good location, but not in the middle of the main party street... which is a good thing in my opinion.

I love R Bar for the fact that it claims to be one thing--a hockey bar--and it's really, really awesome at being just that. The walls are covered with museum-like Blue Jackets memorabilia. I've been there a zillion times and I still don't think I've seen everything. The service is fantastic, even when the place is packed, and the prices are pretty good. I think my favorite part about R Bar, though, is the crowd. A bunch of crazy hockey fans all in one room usually makes for a pretty entertaining night.

    (4)
  • Amy S.

While I'm not a fan of Frog Bear and Wild Boar after a hockey game because the crowd isn't hockey fans (and that kind of annoys me after a fun game), this place is definitely a hockey fan's type of place. There are plenty of sports memorabilia on the walls and the TVs are tuned to hockey and other assorted sports. The beers are cheap and on game nights they have portable bars set up so you don't have to go all the way to the bar. The drawback of this place is that all the other hockey fans know its the place to go. On a game night, it packed. Standing room only and sometimes not even breathing room. I just wish it were a little bigger so I wasn't annoyed with all the people so close.

Great bar for a good inexpensive lunch downtown! Great for an after work happy hour! Great servers and a fun local bar atmosphere!!! Oh and the best part, THE hockey bar on game nights!!!

  • Kasey T.

Great bar! My favorite in cbus when I lived there. Nice bar staff and not a d bag clientele, like most arena district bars. Highly recommended.

  • T O.

First of all, I'm a huge hockey fan not just the Jackets, so this bar is great to watch any and every hockey game. The food is pretty good for having a small kitchen. The biggest issue is the service. Very slow, even on off nights when there are only 10 people at the bar. Sometimes I feel like I did something wrong by asking for another beer. The hockey draw helps this bar out but if the service continues like this why would I go there when the season is over? I can get attitude at much better places in Columbus. Funny I have mentioned the service issues to several other hockey fans and they all agree. Could be a tough off season. I hope not because I do like having a hockey bar in Columbus.

Blue Jackets fans take note, if you aren't at the R Bar, you're missing out. This is THE hockey bar in town. So much so that during special events, players like Rick Nash take time out of their busy schedule to pour drinks. Rick Nash is soooo dreamy. Great happy hour from 2pm-9pm. $2 bottles, $2.50 domestic drafts, and $3.50 for Guinness on tap. Yum. Service can get a little slow on game nights, especially during the witching hours from when offices close until the puck drops. The huge diamond shaped bar usually has three or four bartenders and two bar backs hauling butt popping off bottle caps and pouring drafts. The shot of choice at this CBJ bar is the "Stinger," tequila, blue curacao, dropped in some Smirnoff Ice. Deceptively potent. The patio doesn't have furniture just yet but I hear it's coming soon. The kitchen isn't open just yet either (I think they are aiming for the 2010 season) but patrons can order from a couple pizza delivery places and the staff will take care of everything else. Four flat screens behind the bar, a couple more scattered throughout, and a big projection screen for game nights. When the Blue Jackets win the Stanley Cup, it will DEFINITELY make an appearance at R Bar.

went to r bar in the arena district. lots of thumbs down. we went with a group of people from work and the seating was absolutely pathetic. it was 1/2 off pizza day, but the ovens could only handle two pizzas at a time. for the cost (after the discount) the food was edible, but certainly not in the same class as tommy's pizza. the service was kinda lousy. we needed a minute to look at the menu, and she didn't return for another 15 minutes. uggg!

  • Buck J.

Definitely a hockey bar--thought I was in Canada--but a great place to hang out on an NFL Sunday afternoon too. And, it's only 10 mins from the airport if you are looking to kill time before a flight. Thin crust pizza is a good choice. Great service. Nice location in the arena district (although a little tricky to find your first time since you can't see from road). Indoor and outdoor seating. Can't wait to come back sometime for a hockey game.

The R Bar is a great bar in the Arena district! It's pretty much known as a hockey bar! Great place to watch the Blue Jackets or a great place to go before or after their games! Good prices on drinks too!

R-Bar is my favorite arena district spot. THE Columbus hockey bar. Pre and post game place to be. Great people, great patio, and good canadien beer specials+food! Go Jackets!!

don't come here very often, but stopped in late night on Cinco De Mayo to get some food... and OH-EMM-GEE... Buffalo Chicken Pizza is the BOMB.COM!!

  • Chris M.

What a great place to go to before a game or just anytime you want hockey. Prices are reasonable and TV's are always set to a hockey game. EDIT: They have food now, not great, but solid bar food. Cheap too!

  • Jessica D.

You like hockey, huh? You fancy, huh? R-Bar is where it's at. This is your typical sports bar, with hip enhancing food and every domestic beer America has to offer. No craft beer in this joint, but I'm sure hockey fans aren't crying about it. Hockey players don't cry. No, I am not Ohio's biggest hockey fan, but I know a solid sports bar when I see one. The beer tubes on display tickled my pickle--I look forward to drunken nights messing around with those contraptions. I thoroughly enjoyed a series of pool and countless games of 4-person Pac Man. To top it off, R BAR HAS A POPCORN MACHINE. America! MY only qualm: no french fries. If someone had told me that there is an American restaurant/bar that does not sell french fries, I woulda thought that person is on hallucinogenic drugs. Oh well. I'll settle for nachos.

Not the greatest draught selection. They had no local beers on tap which makes me sad. I had to go Leinenkugels and Yuengling. They have special until 8 but of course I cam after 8 on a Tuesday so no specials. The TVs were all turned to hockey and we had to ask to get them changes to the Indians vs Reds. They didn't change the big screens even though we were the only large group (15+) in the bar. They do carry bottles of Columbus Brewing but that isnt enough for me. We have so many awesome craft brewers in Columbus, you would think any bar downtown would carry at least one of them. The food was eh. My friend ordered the nachos which was corn tortilla chips with nacho cheese (the cheap kind). The salsa was spicy which was one of the good things. I also ordered a pretzel which was good but that was because I needed some heavy carbs to go with my beer. I hadn't had much to eat earlier so i try to be safe. Service was good but it should of been since we were over 75% of their customers that night. They have a nice little patio but I won't be planning a trip back here. (One caveat-I guess it is a hockey bar so i shouldn't have expected Baseball, but we were over 75% of their client base)

Great fun space in an area of pop-collar PITAs. Prices are right, drink specials daily. They serve Brezel Pretzels!!! (yay! that's really why I go) The mozz sticks are baked not fried - very yum! Often they are out of their food items. Not a fan of the Pizza, might be great with pepperoni as it seems to come with a lot of it. But, I'm a veg and the sauce is scarce and bland, the cheese not the focal point. PLENTY of TVs. Clean restrooms. It's actually fun to watch hockey here!! and, since he's with his own kind, I don't have to censor the Mr. lol

  • Brad S.

I never actually intend to go to this bar, but it's nice, nonetheless. It's large, particularly in the summer, when the outside space is available. The bar is nicely situated in the middle so you can approach from all angles. TV screens are plentiful, and there's usually one or two good beers on tap. Generally, however, it's indistinguishable from any other generic bar. It's a nice jumping off point for a night, but there's just nothing special to draw you in.

If you're looking for below average service (but solid eye candy), concession stand style food, and a surprise meal... R bar takes home first place in the 614.

Great food and service, server had no issue handling our large party. Coming back soon!

  • Catherine J.

While I'm not a huge fan of the bars in this area, R Bar is kind of the lesser of the evils. I've usually only come here because of organized events like happy hour meet n' greets. There's really nothing horrible to say about R Bar, but nothing fantastic, either. If you're in the Arena District for other reasons (like a hockey game, if that ever happens again), then this is a good option, but I wouldn't go out of my way to be here unless you have another purpose. Of the bars around, it's more hocky-centric than the others with their decor and general focus. A basic, pleases-most bar near the action.

  • Greg W.

Come for the hockey, stay for the beer towers! This place is always hopping; especially on nights when the CBJ are playing. There are TVs all over the place with various sporting events always televised. If hockey is in season (not locked out!) there will be NHL games on all of the screens. In the back corner there's a 4 player PacMan arcade game that is an absolute blast to play. There's also a free popcorn maker to satisfy your cravings for salty food.

R Bar - a hockey haven. LOVE this place for a different "downtown bar" vibe. Especially when you want to escape the raunchiness of Park St. The beer tubes are a given, and the food has taken a surprising turn for the BETTER! It really has become great bar food, rather than just "meh"-typical bar good. Seriously. While I can't say there are great drink specials, it is very reasonably priced.. and I find myself visiting R Bar on the reg. Especially with the many many TV's - it's the perfect place for that Hockey fix that sometimes you just need... especially when you want to be surrounded by other fans. Oh Blue Jackets... when will you be good enough to warrant MORE people wanted come to this bar and being interested in hockey?!

  • Samuel T.

Terrible. If the bar wasn't next to the arena, it would be gone already. Friendly staff but order same drink 3 time from 2 bartenders and all drinks were different. Asked what was good and was told wings. I travel the country and love wings.....hands down the worst cooked wings I have ever tasted. Only took 2 minutes to come out and they are baked. What did you half bake them early today and microwave them to reheat? Come to Columbus a lot. I don't care if they are open late....would rather go to the bar at the Hyatt nearby and be done early than visit them again. The Columbus hockey teams deserves a better bar for fans to enjoy their sport. Unfortunate...

Great bar. Lots to offer! Although nothing really stands out besides it being a hockey bar. Well, that and their huge, shareable beer tubes. Beer selection was OK. No crafts, which is expected from a sports bar in the Arena District. I wasn't that surprised. Food was standard for sports bar as well. I happily scarfed down a 12 inch peperoni while sucking down a Blue Moon. The Blue Jackets game was on; we were drinking cold beer; the pizza was hot and came out quickly. There wasn't much to be unhappy with at all. Hockey fans rejoice! This is your place! But - I'm sure you already knew that.

I thought I had reviewed this place last month, but I guess I didn't. We went there to watch the NLCS game on TBS since I'm cheap and don't have cable. We sauntered up to the bar, and asked the bartender which of the many TV's might be showing the NLCS (it was about an hour before first pitch). She had no idea what I was talking about. I clarified; "The National League championship game". Still, no clue. "The Cardinals and Brewers major league baseball game on TBS". She finally said that she didn't know anything about baseball, so she'd need to talk to her manager. Seriously? You can't just tell me that you can or cannot turn a TV to TBS? In the end, we got a manager to put it on the absolute smallest TV in the place (think Michael Scott's plasma). I'm convinced that every bar in the arena district sucks. Please prove me wrong.

Newbie in the Arena "grand" area. So far, I regret venturing out for lunch. And this place and their 1/2 off pizzas is another reason why I will be packing my lunch from now on. $10.00 spent on a soda and 12" pizza. I looked at my bill and I noticed a 10 cent charge for rounding? Help me out here guys? What the freak is a rounding charge? Oh! They're pizza is Better than Boston's gourmet pizza. Service is mediocre and tolerable at best.
