I had dinner here recently during a business trip to the area. The restaurant was nice with lots of wood and brass on the walls. The service was great where we had a main server who was assisted by others who brought out the food. They have a full bar and had some great scotches but I was being good so I stuck with water. I started with some french onion soup which was great served in the traditional bowl they are supposed to be served in unlike a lot of restaurants where they use "hip" or "trendy" bowls. It has a great layer of toasted/broiled cheese on top and the onions in the wonderful broth were nicely caramelized. They offer an array of cuts of beef which you can order with different "toppings" on them. I had the ribeye with the topping which I can't remember the name of but it had bits of lobster in it. As for sides they had a nice list of traditional sides that steak houses offer. We ordered some of the creamed spinach. It was great as you could still taste the sweet/bitter spinach in it. Also had the potato au gratin which was also good as the cheese was not overpowering the potatoes. And also had to try the lobster mac and cheese. It was good but I didn't notice the lobster in it. They had a nice selection of desserts but no one in our party tried any on this trip. This was a nice traditional steak house experience with a lot of "old world" atmosphere. I would be happy to stop by again if I am back in the area.

They call this a steakhouse? I have had much better and was not impressed at all. I have been here twice and both times I ordered my filet medium. Both times it came out raw. I had to send it back and when it came out it was over cooked or well done. I really do not want to send my meal back, so sending it back a second time was not appealing to me. I should not have to anyway if they know how to cook a steak. I am starting to think that the cook is someone without training and just does not know how to cook. I have been to J. Alexanders many times and have never had any problems with my steaks there.

After many years of enjoying the Hyde Park restaurants, I must say it has come time to move on. the last 2 experiences have been less than expected. Steak on menu sounds great, until they show up. Mediocre! Not as ordered (med Rare-). Steak was light pink. I was told, "it's the lighting" Duh I've been to over 200 fine steakhouses in the US. Your not going to fool me. Taste was ok, plate wasn't warm. I just spent 4 weeks in Scottsdale and found how a real steak house does it right. Mastros! For the money in Columbus, Mitchell's or Ruth's Chris, even if it does look like a funeral home.

My boyfriend took me here for Valentine's Day. Totally blown away by our experience. We made an early 4:45 reservation, which was perfect. We were immediately greeted and escorted to a table. The waitress we had was phenomenal. She relaxed both of us by being incredibly casual while still very knowledgeable about everything on the menu from wine to the sauce served with the steak. (No dumb questions mentality) Hyde Park is like a once a year type of thing for us. Neither of us have a ton of experience in the fine dining category. But we do love good food. Both of us raved about our food. Steaks were cooked to perfection. The salads couldn't have been crisper and the dessert was beautiful and delicious. $200 later we left full and impressed. Some of the reviews mention lackluster service and improper preparation of food. Portions are huge but the food is great and the service is fantastic. Split a side if you can, otherwise, you'll be taking home left overs. We'll definitely be going back, next time we have $200 laying around. It was worth it. We had a great time.

Valet spots are blocked off right in front when the parking lot is 40 yards max in every direction, is valet really necessary; oh wait it is since valet has blocked off the the close spots. Yes, it is free but now $3 tip for allowing to park 20 ft away. Our service was sad, my wife sympathized and said you never know what the waiter is going through but is was sad; we had to steel silverware from the next empty table since we did not get any and food was getting cold , forgot 2 parts of the order/ or perhaps kitchen did screw up?, had to steel my water from my wife since few refills apparently. Food was off: soup was lukewarm, asparagus was drowned in olive oil, molten cake was over baked and not flavorful (just went to Barcelona, with stuffy nose, and had theirs and still it tasted better). We had 1 side, 3 apps and 1 dessert, 3 drinks did not help, and bill was 87. Oh, wine by glass selection had favorites, I looked up on phone the fav was given an 85. Ordered 18 a glass that was good but not that good to be the most price glass. Wine must have very high markup and I understand markup is usually double retail.

Gave Hyde Park three tries before writing this review. Each visit, I've experienced the same thing- slow service, snooty (borderline nasty) waitstaff, and mediocre food. I am a pretty easygoing customer, and was genuinely surprised by the lack of warmth or personality from the employees here. The place has a less-than-welcoming vibe, and I don't recommend it for a good dining experience. There are other places to get a good steak. I think this place is past its prime (cue sad trombone)

Went here a year ago and the food and service were both amazing. Cut to a year later, taking my mother here for Mothers Day (yes a week early lol) and man, what a different story. We were there at blue plate special hour, so you would think the service would be attentive since maybe 5 tables of toothless geriatrics ordering potatoes thru straws were present. We were sat and were served drinks after a short wait. Then over 10 minutes passed before anyone took a food order, with menus closed and piled on the side of the table. We were literally staring down every waiter to walk by... No one stopped. Drinks are now empty. Finally our order is taken and eventually my mothers appetizer comes out. Mine is missing. I call a runner to check the kitchen. He finds the missing order. I eat mine after my mother is just about finished. Later the food eventually arrives. Drinks are again dry. My steak is completely rare so I send it back to get it to medium rare as ordered. The drinks come out 10 more minutes later. Then the steak arrives. My mother, again, is almost done with her entree when I begin mine. You get the point. I'm not going to go over every little detail but literally every course and each round of drinks were botched in some capacity. The service was absolutely unacceptable. And this is supposed to be one of the top steak houses in Columbus? No The bill was 200 dollars. For 2. And 10 MORE minutes passes between credit card being placed down and being processed. I will never be back again. Absolutely ridiculous 2 hour 220 dollar experience for 2. Completely unacceptable. And for the record, the steak wasn't even tender. I've had better at Saddle Ranch (a chop house with a mechanical bull in Los Angeles) One extra star for having my favorite wine. J Lohr Cabernet. Thank God for J Lohr Cabernet...

I went here on a double date and i was not at all impressed with food...i have had better steaks at Lonestar honestly. The service and atmosphere were fair. Not a good value, and the building needs remodeled.

Maybe I'm spoiled from all the steaks I've had at Jeff Ruby restaurants in Cincinnati, but from the 3 or 4 times I've been here, I'm just not impressed. I'd never been to this location, but the parking was 10x easier! If you can walk 10 steps to the door, you can skip the valet. The bread basket was really good, full of warm pretzel sticks, sourdough rolls, and some flat bread crackers. I ordered a cup of French onion soup, rather than a salad to start the meal. It was quite good with a very flavorful broth, and as much as I love cheese this may have had a little too much (shocker, I know). That didn't stop me from eating it all, but I was almost too full to eat my meal after all of that. Magically, by the time my meal came I had room to eat a lot more! Since the steaks never knocked my socks off, I went for the halibut this time- one of the fresh catches of the day. I chose the lemon sauce to go with it, which was a nice compliment to the mild fish. I really enjoyed the fish and would order it again. For sides, we went with the creamed spinach (eh), lobster mac & cheese (yum), and potatoes gratin (delish). There were plenty of leftovers to enjoy the next day. We couldn't leave without dessert, so I ordered to the chocolate molten cake. It was a good finish to the end of the meal! Maybe I'll give the steaks here another shot in the future, but I don't think I'll rush back anytime soon.... unless an invitation awaits, of course!

Not impressed. For starters, the it took 5 minutes to be seated on a slow Tuesday night. After being seated and being greeted by the waiter, it took 30 minutes after being greeted to get our orders taken. The steak itself was over cooked. I ordered medium and it was medium-well leaning more towards the well side. I could've gone out, bought the meat, given it to some random guy on the street to grill and my chances of having it cooked medium would've been the same. The few bright spots were the bread basket, a good mix of things. Also, the steak was seasoned well, it's just a shame that it was overcooked. For the price you pay, the little things count, the service should be fairly attentive and they should know how to cook a steak, I mean the word grill is in the restaurants name...

We had a great time when we went to go there to eat on 11/24/12 and for the live Jazz music. We ordered the Steak Woody which was amazing. We got it in between Medium and Medium Well and it was so good! We also ordered the Lobster Mac n Cheese which Jennifer (our server) stated it was good and.....she was 100% correct. We enjoyed our meal so much that there was no leftovers. The restaurant is very clean and the staff is friendly. Jennifer, our server, was very pleasant, nice, not overly nice to where it seem like she was pretending. She help us out a lot with the menu. Also, the jazz music in the lounge was very relaxing and they were great. We will be going back again simply due to the service and how we were treated. We felt comfortable when we arrived and left.

In my circle of friends, the term "Hyde Park" has become a sort of in-joke symbol to refer to the idea of going out to a really expensive, absolutely divine dinner. The real joke is that we've only been able to do it once- for our friend's graduation, with his parents picking up the tab- a move made all the more generous by the whole experience of being there. The dining room was a sea of darkness with islands of light surrounding the tables. It's easy to think you have the restaurant all to yourself, especially with the level of service the waitstaff provides: seeing my friend's father discuss the finer points of wines with our waiter to pick out a bottle for the table was a real treat for an uncultured schmuck like me. The ambiance is only broken when the group a few tables over gets rowdy drunk and starts shouting to each other and practically singing. That was a really classy bunch, but that's hardly the restaurant's fault. I had the prime rib- a very stupid move at a nice steakhouse, of course, but I was absolutely happy with it, even knowing that it was later in the evening and I was probably eating one of the last cuts off a rib that had been sitting in heat all day. It was still delicious- I can barely remember my sides, my memory is all meat and juices thereof. I seem to remember a garlicky, mashed potato thing. It wasn't bleeding, though, so it's lost to the drama of the main item. Whatever wine had been chosen (I said I was uncultured) went well with what I had, so thanks for that, friend's dad! I also got to sneak a bite of someone's filet mignon and the only words I can use to express it are "my God." The singular pleasure of my dining experience that night was the distinct pleasure of not having to ever view the bill, but I know what filet mignon is despite my barbaric nature and even knowing the numbers attached to it, I have no doubt that had I the chance again it would be in my stomach very soon after. You won't exactly have to take out a home loan to eat at Hyde Park, but it's well out of the usual range for a workin' dude like me. The price is well deserved, however, and Hyde Park is an exemplary dining experience from beginning to end.

I came to dinner here this evening. I've been here before but it was so long ago that I don't remember much about it. I was early, as usual, about 5:00, so I beat the rush. I started with a bowl of onion soup. It was a delicious start. Great broth, lots of onions and a healthy chunk of cheese. That was accompanied by a small bread basket. One of the items was a pretzel-like roll, with salt on the top. Very good! I really wanted to order prime rib but was told it was only available on Sundays. Drat! So I settled for a petite filet, ordered medium rare. It came out of the kitchen cooked to perfection! Along with that I chose the asparagus with hollendaise sauce, because of Shawnie's suggestion. It's a shame the veggies aren't smaller which would let a single diner try a couple of them, but alas, my order of asparagus was large enough for two and then some. I ended up bringing almost a half order home with me. I also had a glass of wine; a German wine which I can't pronounce and couldn't spell anyway. As I told the manager, everything was perfect, from the service to the food. A great meal! The bill with tax and tip was $62, a fair price.

So it's Restaurant week in Columbus and my mom and I wanted a nice dinner and catch up with my friend Lisa. We scoured the RW listings and decided upon Hyde Park. The place is pretty easy to find off of Henderson Rd, as someone previously said, skip the valet - if you're there early enough to find a spot in the regular lot. We came out of dinner about 7 and the lot was full, so maybe that's when valet becomes useful. At the bar at 430, there's a $4/$6 martini special menu. We tried the Pomegranate and the Appleton. I was quite pleased with the former but not the latter -it had a spiced honey on the rim that was like Red Hots. On to the table at 5p, we have two waiters serving us so we're never out of anything; including water of which I drink a ton. The bread basket is different; there's large, soft, pretzel sticks, some buns and some rye crackers. The pretzels coulda used some cheese to make them AWESome but alas, just had butter. For dinner two of us went off menu and one went with the RW offering. Mom got the raw oyster on half shell and the appetizer platter. The crab cakes were DElicious, the jumbo shrimp were larger than my hand and there were a couple of inch sized scallops on there too that she said were good. My friend got the Wedge "salad" which is really just a wedge of iceberg lettuce with a dressing on it; that's not much of a salad in my world. Her Atlantic salmon was quite tasty but the mango sauce was too onion flavored for my tastes. I decided to splurge and get the surf 'n turf which I got to choose my salad and went with the Greek one. It was ENORMOUS and delicious. Tons of green olives and dark leafy greens, and quite a few tomato wedges that I pawned off to mom. The dressing was a vinaigrette that was super yummy. Then the main course of bacon wrapped filet Mignon and sea scallops comes on this giant plate making the portions look tinier than they already were. The filet was perfectly cooked but had no flavor cept a charring of the bacon. The scallops were about an inch diameter and you only get two of them. They were good though. Wine: I ordered the Duckhorn "Decoy" blend and it was simply MARVELOUS. I'll be thinking about it for a long time and wishing I could afford a bottle, or twelve. It's a strong red along the lines of Clos du Val so it's not for the feint of taste-buds. For dessert, my friend and I each got the New York cheesecake. It's a HUGE portion with just the tiniest dab of raspberry sauce on the plate. I would have preferred the cheesecake be drizzled instead of the plate, but it's all about presentation I guess. It was very moist and probably one of the best cheesecake I've had. Atmosphere: We were seated in the first alcove by the bar so we didn't have to go very far after the cocktails. I rather liked that we were mostly alone in there in the beginning of dinner. Thankfully the fireplace wasn't lit since it's so hot outside but I could see it being dreamy on a winter's eve. The women's restroom was quite clean but it's like it was crammed into a tiny space as there's barely enough room to get to the stall or wash your hands. So all in all a fantastic dinner out but whether it's worth the hefty price tag? maybe once a year or so. I can just get just as much enjoyment out of a steak cooked at home that's from the grocery store. It just doesn't have all the fancy accoutrements to go along with it. Thanks for reading....

I went here specifically for the jazz, so I thought I might have a drink and an appetizer. The large sign outside the door advertised happy hour, which they don't have on Saturday night. When I came in the front door, nobody greeted me or handed me a menu. I looked for one but only found the paper "souvenir" menu so I don't know if the real one had prices listed or not, but since this menu did not I felt insulted, as in, "if you have to ask the price, you probably can't afford it." So, I might have ordered a whole meal if prices had been listed on the menu. The website advertises two course meals for $19.95, but I think only at certain times. I think not listing prices is pretentious and rude and makes deciding what to order much more difficult. I decided to order the Blackened Sea Scallops appetizer, which sounded good, even after I asked the bartender how much it would cost, $12.95. Of course I forgot to ask how many I would get for that price. It was an appetizer, so I wasn't expecting many, but I did expect more than two. It came with a pile of shredded carrots next to it. It was tasty, I'll give it that. A great flavor profile with the dressing and the bleu cheese. I just thought there should have been more for $12.95. I inquired about their Manhattan cocktail, which sounded good, but it was around the same price as my appetizer. The bartender was friendly enough too, but I really think someone should have greeted me at the door and given me a menu. Valet parking? really? The parking lot just isn't that big. It just isn't necessary. This isn't like the downtown location where there is no parking anywhere nearby. If you're a one percenter who doesn't need to know what anything costs, you might like this place.

Magnificent overall. Cocktails, service, and the food...I will be dreaming about it for a long long time. It needs a few physical improvements but I know there is no money for improvements in these times. I'm pleased to find the restaurant in such good operating condition, I have wanted to go there for years. Everything is fine, the prices are more than reasonable. It cost less than it costs me to char my food on my grill. If you drink cocktails, get one with a cherry; if you don't drinks cocktails, ask for a cherry. It's special, you don't need no stinking chocolate with the cherry.

I came here with my family for a Sunday night celebration. This is the oldest Hyde Park in Columbus - having been known as a restaurant called "Cork and Cleaver" before being purchased by the Hyde Park Group. The restaurant is small, compared to Hyde Park standards. But it is in no way sub-par... The restaurant is made up of small dining rooms ringing a large bar. The is a fireplace that provides some warmth to each of the more intimate dining rooms. You find yourself dining here with usually 6 or so tables, It's a different take from the HP on the Cap - which is showy, large and very noisy. It is relaxed and I would consider a romantic place for an intimate date . To me, this is my favorite steak in Columbus. Special cuts, special treatments, special sauces. Fresh salads. Excellent side dishes, ample for sharing - particularly the Potatoes Gratin Gruyere and the Hash Browns with Caramelized Onions and Sour Cream. The asparagus and broccoli are steamed nicely with hollandaise. HP is running numerous specials at this time - Lenten seafood on Fridays, and the Early Diner featuring local favorites, including 7 ounces of prime filet, soup or salad, and a side for $19.90. The desserts are also delicious - the carrot cake and the chocolate cake are ample enough to serve a large family, let alone two. Huge wine list and full bar with generous pours. You can't go wrong with this location. And the current specials make it very affordable, and a nice place to visit more frequently than just on a special occasion.

SO...let me start by saying I rarely go to expensive restaurants because they are, well, expensive - I like to feel that I'm getting my money's worth when I look at the whole picture - atmosphere, food and service. Sadly, Hyde Park did not meet any of my expectations. I went with my fiance for his birthday with our 2 year old. Early, mind you, so as not to have to subject other diners to the sounds of BOLT playing on my son's portable DVD player. We were seated by the fireplace and the place was EMPTY!! Our martinis were delicious!! The food - was not nearly worth the cost! The garlic mashed potatoes were bland with just a wave of garlic. The sauteed mushrooms had not an ounce of season to them. The steaks were underwhelming. My NY Strip was overdone, lukewarm and tasteless - the bone-in ribeye was cooked well, but again had basically no flavor. I remember sitting thinking - wow - the $15 ribeye DINNER at Texas Roadhouse tastes better than this, heck, EVERY steak I have had there over the YEARS I've been going has always tasted DELICIOUS. I would say the little bread basket was the BEST part of the meal - their pretzel bread is too die for! I had phoned in my reservation and indicated that we would be there celebrating a birthday and I felt like we weren't treated any differently than any other day. Seems to me an expensive restaurant should at least TRY to add a special touch - heck, just about any place will give you a little slice of pie or something to say "thanks for celebrating with us". The service was okay - we waited WAY too long for the check. There are places I go and can't wait to go back (Restaurant Japan/Akai Hana) - or go and know that I'll probably never go back again (Club 33, Disneyland comes to mind) - this restaurant will not be on that list.

This classy little steakhouse stands alone at the end of a residential road just off Old Henderson. You'd never know it was back there, but if you are in the mood for a fine piece of meat, this particular Hyde Park is worth seeking out. I waver between Hyde Park and The Top as being my favorite steakhouse in Columbus. They both have very different vibes and very different presentations of their food, so I try not to compare. I do love Hyde Park for it's warm, house-like ambiance and insanely good beef. However, Hyde park is not just a Columbus phenom. The restaurant group is growing and can be found all over Northern Ohio, as well as in Buffalo and Florida- but no matter. It's one of the best restaurants Columbus has to offer. This particular location is the city's original and remains my favorite (even though I do like the others in the Short North and Dublin. They each just have very different atmospheres). I'll just cut to the chase- the food here blows my mind and the chefs can prepare meat in a variety of classic and noveau styles, including Steak ala Oscar. Steak au Poivre, and Tournedos au Bleu- all of which I have had and loved. Hyde Park is known for naming some of the dishes after local sports legends and Steak Tressel (named for Ohio State's head football coach) is among the most popular. My husband rarely orders anything else. I on the other hand venture out into the realm of both surf and turf. I've had one of the best seafood dishes here too. I love ordering seafood at a steakhouse, because they usually have limited options and whatever it is will most likely be done well. In this case, it was a Hawaiian butterfish, which I had never heard of before, and to this day is one of the best fish dishes I've ever had- bar none. Keep in mind, the sides dishes are ordered a la carte and the portions are sized to serve two. My personal favorites - and I've (at least) tasted them all- are the perfectly cooked Asparagus with Béarnaise sauce, the Haricots Vert (French green beans), and... drum roll please... the most decadent and delicious Potatoes Gruyère Gratin. I have tried to reproduce this cheesy potato dish several times, but have given up. Ive resorted to simply asking for the recipe- and the chef was kind enough to oblige. I've eaten here a lot and feel compelled to note that the service has gone unparalleled. Bartenders, servers, managers... all very nice and accommodating even when it's super busy. Saturday nights at Hyde Park are particularly awesome. Live jazz. Festive, noisy bar. Feels like an old-school supper club, which I enjoy. No matter which way you slice it, Hyde Park is just an all around classy joint.

Best service, best menu items, best location of tables for privacy and intimate dining. I love the pretzel bread that comes with the meals, Lobster bisque, Caesar salad and a filet. They also have the oysters Rockefeller at this location which my husband enjoys. Creme brulee for dessert will end the meal with you being rolled out via a cart. Yum!

Hyde Park has probably the best deal in all of Columbus. If you are looking for that expensive dining experience at a lower price, then you have to go for the $19.19 menu between 5pm and 6pm every night and all night on Sunday. It includes soup or salad, entree and a side (the sides are huge). It is soo much food! What makes this even better is sitting in the bar to get happy hour martinis for only $4 till 6:30. If you went for this meal any other time might be double! One other special right now is lobster for I think $21 on only Fridays. Over all I do enjoy eating at Hyde Park. I usually get the house salad. Last night we also started out with the scallops on the bar menu for $5 during happy hour. I don't liked blackened taste so next time I will ask them to leave that off. The sweet and sour sauce was the perfect accompaniment. My mom always gets the twin fillets. They have always been good for her, but when I went with my boyfriend his were burnt. Over the summer they had a really nice sauce that went along with them, maybe they will bring that back for the warm weather (I hope to see it soon). The fillets are come with Bearnaise now. On the side is a huge pile of onion straws so we usually get a healthier side like broccoli or asparagus which come with hollindaise (they are trying to kill us). Usually the staff is pretty responsive and is able to answer any question you have. Over all, it is a great experience and I always leave with a fully belly!

Let it be known the Universal Truth of Fine Dining. That you get what you pay for. Hyde Park is a prime example of this rule. I'm positive that Hyde Park is one of the pricier Steakhouses in Columbus, and every cent is mirrored in the excellent service, sophisticated atmosphere, and above all top notch cuisine. Low ceilings, dimly lit dining rooms, fireplaces, and private dining rooms let you know you're in a place a few steps (or miles) above your usual Damon's or Outback. The place settings are pristine and intimate. There were other patrons seated at tables right next to ours, but we never felt like our meal or conversation was taken over by theirs. I can't stop praising the service we received at this Hyde Park location. I can't speak for the Union Station location which seems to be more popular (they were booked solid for the day we went out), but the Upper Arlington staff was knowledgeable, agreeable, and completely professional. These people aren't just waiters or waitresses, they are professional hospitality staff. The food was beyond excellent. After studying the menu carefully I picked one of the specialties, The Steak "Griffin" (or Steak Cabernet depending on your location) named after Archie Griffin. All the specialty cuts and flavor combinations are named after famous OSU figures. The "Griffin" is a Petite Filet Mignon with garlic, cracked black pepper, and a roasted shallot Cabernet butter. The steak comes with a salad with your choice of dressing, and these crunchy onion strings. Side dishes are ordered separately and can feed 2 - 4 people. Try the Potatoes Gruyere Gratin. If you love cheese, you'll love this dish. My other dining companions ordered the Sunday Special Prime Rib Dinner, and the Steak Au Poivre. The Steak Au Poivre is a skillet seared New York Strip with Peppercorn and Cognac bordelaise sauce. The Prime Rib dinner comes with salad, a side, and a dessert. I tried both and I must say, I made the better choice. Second Universal Truth of Fine Dining, A Filet Mignon might be a smaller cut than a New York Strip, but what it lacks in size it dominates in flavor. Small cut, big flavor. Hyde Park gets 5 stars in every category, and will be what I recommend from now on if you are looking for a memorable and personal evening. It'll drain your pocketbook, but you'll know your money was well spent.

Yeah, simply put...went back again and had the gruyere burger. Dry and bland this time...I won't be back to a steakhouse that is inconsistent and can't get what they supposedly specialize in right! What a shame...

If you want a place to take a special evening to the level of legendary I suggest Hyde Park. The service was amazing which was a great compliment to the amazing atmosphere. My wife and. Celebrated ur third anniversary and valentines day here and we definitely will be back. I had the tresses steak and she had the lobster tail. Both were cooked to perfection. While the Top still holds my designation as best steak house in Columbus, Hyde Park is a close second.

We must've caught this place on a bad day. It was a huge disappointment. The service was REMARKABLY slow - we waited for 45 minutes, there was only one server, manning both the (full) bar and tables as well. It was ridiculous, and the maitre d' did not seem to have any interest in helping run food or fill glasses. We actually got our food before they brought us our wine. Given the price, you'd think they would've been more accomodating. The food was medicore, ok but not worth the cost (and wait.) Portions were excessively large, but most Americans seem to prefer that so I accept that I'm in the minority. The wine was very good, and the server was nice - but being there over two hours - not by choice - for a $$ meal seemed unnecessary. Probably won't go back.

Not my first rodeo!!! As a long time fan of Hyde Park they get judged a little tougher than most. Let's face it, when you are paying top dollar for a meal it should be great, service should be great and the atmosphere should be great. The occasion was my wife's birthday and me being the man I am I let them know, her first since we were married in April. Unlike myself, she had never been to Hyde Park and wasn't sure what to expect. On the other hand I had been to this particular Hyde Park at least 20 times and knew what I wanted to see, taste, hear, etc.... we were promptly seated by a very friendly staff after we had the car valet parked (complimentary). Our server joined us in a matter of seconds with our menus, the wine list and a chalk written special of the evening menu which was actually a nice touch. So many times I have been to high end steak house and the server/waiter will verbally tell you the specials and after the first two you can't remember the rest. We made our decision, we ordered the Gruyere Onion Soup for starters along with a Caesar Salad for each of us. For the main course we ordered the Nicklaus 18 oz New York Strip which comes with a spicy peppercorn and cognac bordelaise sauce (my favorite)!! I have to admit I am a bread freak, if you have great bread then I will be back at your restaurant even if your main dish isn't so hot. At the Hyde Park they have this incredible pretzel bread that comes to your table hot, add a little pinch of REAL butter and it's heaven all over again. OK, I'm done with the bread. The soup arrived hot and very tasty. Just the right amount of spices!! The Caesar Salad had just the right amount of dressing, the croutons were crunchy and the serving size perfect. I must admit that between the incredible soup, salad and pretzel bread we were getting a little full. As we all know, the highlight of the evening was yet to come, the steaks. Our New York Strip (Nicklaus Style) arrived and it looked absolutely scrumptious. Something was missing!!!!!!!!!!! Being a veteran of Hyde Park I knew that with the Steak Nicklaus came the famous Onion Straws!! The server was very good about bringing us the Onion Straws and they were Delicious. The last item to arrive was the Potatoes Gruyère Gratin. I wish that I could give this visit a 4.75 because of the Potatoes Gruyère Gratin. They were good, not great, they could have been cooked or baked a little longer to make them a little more tender. That's where the very minor complaint ends. The steak was incredible, tender, and easy on the palate. Everything I would expect from The Hyde Park on Olde Henderson!!! I normally don't end on a downer but the only reference they made to my wife's birthday was at the very end of the evening as we left, he said Happy Birthday. Cupcake with a candle?????????
