After laughing over some of the posted (and deleted) reviews on Yelp, I convinced (not that I really had to twist his arm after saying there was craft beer) Dan to come check this place out with me. This bar/shop is tucked into a cozy little space next to Impero and Whit's Frozen Custard. When we arrived around eight on Thursday evening, there were a few people standing around the bar mingling. There are several refrigerators of bottles on the left, and a nice bar area with some tables and stools to the right. There were three bartenders, two men and a woman, and she came over to check in with us, explain a little about their concept, and invited us to ask questions. We took a seat at the bar -- a neat polished cross-section of a tree -- and Dan picked out an American pale ale from the list of six taps. The bartenders were super friendly and talkative, responding eagerly to questions about their start-up, the research they did, and discussing the merits of the different beers on tap. Dan also tried the Stone 16th anniversary, which I didn't care for, but which he deemed "interesting." I really like the ambiance of the bar area, with the low lighting and dark wood, although Dan thought it needed a little artwork or some decoration. He is a little dubious about the long-term viability of the space, suggesting that the carry-out factor and the limited taps might not be able to sustain the business. It is quite a small space, and doesn't have the potential that Brothers Drake has for patio extension or performance venue. But if it were on the merits and the enthusiasm of the proprietors and bartenders, there'd be no doubt as to the success of this neat little bar.

Absolutely love this bar! Generally I'm not much a bar girl - I always find them too sporty, too loud, too pretentious, etc. But this one is small and cozy, with dark wood paneling on the walls, dim artistic lighting, and a relaxing ambiance about the place. There's an intimate and inviting vibe that makes it perfect for catching up with a friend or meeting a new one. Occasionally they have fun events like DJ vinyl nights and Chilean food nights paired with beer and South American music. As far as the beer goes, they have a wide selection of beers at great prices in a few large fridges lining one side of the bar. Plus the bartenders are very friendly and knowledgable. Definitely gonna make an effort to come back regularly!

It's a lite dark in here, but the interior design is nice. Good beer selection. But. It feels so clique-y in here that you feel kinda unwelcome. The bartender isn't very attentive. I want to like this place, but it's got them bad vibes, yo.

Awesome place! Great atmosphere and crowd. Does get pretty hot though (could use some AC)

Great tap selection and carry out. The vibe is very relaxing and the bartenders are always friendly. I like the rotating taps and love to see a good sour up there when Patrick gets them in! My only suggestion, queso cheese for the pretzels, that's all I'm saying.

Went there on their grand opening. Way to make a first impression. I stood at the front of the bar for 15 minutes while the bartenders proceeded to serve all of their friends first. I left without being served. I will take my business to a bar with more than 6 beers on tap that isn't the size of a closet.

There's a treble clef masquerading as an ampersand here...can you find it? I LOVE THIS BAR. It's small...maybe smaller than the first floor of my house? And there's only beer, but all the beer is awesome, and there's a lot of it. The beers change a lot, so they don't really have a menu hard copy. There's a chalk board which has a list of the drafts with good descriptions. You can mosey over to the coolers and select a bottle based upon the write-ups or chat up one of the bartenders (who are very knowledgeable) before making your selection. The tables are rough-hewn logs with industrial stools. The light fixtures are works of art. There are cool quirky things to look at. I didn't want to leave and was very happy to be here (who wouldn't be after having just taken in They Might Be Giants). We had to leave though, after just 2 great, dark, chocolately beers, to go find some great food...at the Tip Top Tavern. In the Short North, there are places that are really trying to be something...whereas House Beer just is.

I want more places like this downtown. A good beer selection and the long "bier garten" tables. It was small, intimate, and not crowded (surprisingly, for its size!) I didn't order my own beer - but my friend did, and another grabbed a few bottles togo. They had a few bottles that have been hard to come by, and it was a nice pitstop. It reminds me of a "classier, smaller scale Bob's Bar." But, knowing my beer snob friends, we will be back more than once until we decide if it's worth the time to find parking.

Very helpful staff, very easy going place to stock up on solid strong new to me beers instead of the same old drech at Kroger. Will gladly shop here and continue to try and buy unique craft beer. Glad I stopped in today. Thanks yelp.

House Beer is definitely a little den for dudes, made by dudes. And I mean that in the best way-- masculine decor and BEER. That's House Beer in a nutshell, and gosh love 'em for it. This little nook is the perfect point of interest for a night out in the ShoNo, but you probably can't make an entire night of it here. It could be a good start or ending to your night. To start, meet up with your pals around one of the cut-tree bar tables. To end, grab a craft brew from the carryout fridge or fill a growler to keep your mellow party going once you get back home. They don't have many taps (5 or 6?) but I expect the selection to be rotating. The bartenders will tell you about each one. Personally, I like a limited, curated selection such as this. House Beer will be a great winter spot with all the wood, natural touches, and Edison bulbs providing little puddles of glow.

Went here last night for a drink after dinner with a friend. For someone who is not very well versed in craft beers, I had a great experience. The bartender was extremely friendly and knowledgable and the vibe was super mellow. This is a great place to go on a date or just to chill. From the dim lighting to the local artists on the wall to the DJ spinning on vinyl in the corner, it all goes together and forms a relaxed and non-pretentious environment. Not to mention the beer selection! Holy cow! I love the self service option, as well. You have to check this place out. You won't be disappointed.

Neat and very small bar in the Short North. Good beers on draft but not very many since the whole bar is so small! But they had a lot of cool bottled beers that you can drink in, as well. I also really liked the decor - cool lamps, low lighting, not much seating but the tables they had were unique. Definitely a unique bar!

So glad I stopped in here! Ever since House Beer came to the Short North I've been a little confused and intimidated by what it actually is, and ended up always walking past. I stopped in with a couple of my girlfriends for a night-cap after dinner. It was a weekday and pretty dead, which was perfect. It's a very small place so I'm curious how it holds up to a weekend crowd - or what their weekend crowd even consists of. They have a few draughts and a cooler full of bottles you can enjoy in or take out. Definitely meant for those who enjoy beer - there's no food here and only small bench-like tables for you & your guest(s). The bartender was very nice (and patient) with our group of tipsy "we must catch up!" girls. Nice, dark & cozy, I'll definitely be stopping in here sometime this winter.

Small place with a few drafts and a large selection of bottles. Cool decor, quiet place to have a drink and explore unique craft beers.

I LOVED this unique little place and I agree with the 'den for dudes' description, though I didn't feel any ill-will or discomfort being a lady. They have a row of well-stocked refrigerators lining the wall with a huge variety of beers for retail or immediate, on-sight consumption and maybe 6 rotating drafts at the counter. They also have Omega pretzel knots on the weekend for a snack. In addition to the bar, there are a few beautiful tables. This would be an ideal component of a date night in my opinion- it's dark, inviting and interesting and lacks the too-loud music or sweaty grossness of a bar. And that's it, really... a few tables, a ton of beer and good lighting. Simple and inviting. They do most definitely need more salty snacks, though, being a beer den. Add some pecking options and I'm a regular.

I went here on opening day. Everyone was awesome towards us. They were friendly and chatted it up when they weren't running around doing stuff. The decor is pretty awesome. They use wood from a reclaimed barn and it really tells a story. I won't spoil it for you, but do yourself a favor and ask them about it! The beer selection was good, especially for a small joint. They sell EVERYTHING in the bar either for onsite consumption, or to go. Bring your growler!

Hands down my favorite place to have a drink in the short north. Super cozy and intimate atmosphere. Always great local and other craft beers on tap. The bartenders are always knowledgable and able to recommend something. The music is always, always great - lots of indie pop. Just love this place. Can't wait to come for trivia night and vinyl night.

My fiancé and I went here for our engagement pictures and the environment, beer, and staff were great! Amazing beer selection in a safe friendly bar. The bartender even changed the lighting when he saw we were taking pictures. It looks a little intimidating from the outside but it ended up being our new favorite place to grab a few beers before dinner!

WHAT A COOL PLACE! This small and cozy bar offers an amazing selection of bottle beer and a few drafts. Pick up your bottle in one of the coolers and take it to the bar to pay. Great concept. Plenty of seating for such a small place too. Great selection of semi-rare beers at a very low price compared to others. Found Mikkeller's Coffee IPA in a 750mml for only $8.50! That's unheard of. House beer is hard place to find so don't get discouraged!

  • Christina C.

Brief review now... but plenty more to follow. I often feel masculine when I order a tall IPA with confidence at the bar. Sometimes friends cringe when they hear my order, sometimes guys blush. But really, it's all about the beer and I am not ashamed. I have no reservations coming into House Beer, ordering whatever I want, and chatting about it with the staff. And that, my friends, is magical. There's beer. So much awesome beer. And awesome people. So many awesome people. And opportunities to connect with beer loving friends. So many beer loving friends! I will be back. I will write more in details (soon) and I will make sure I take all my beer adoring friends back here immediately. Stay tuned for more....

This rather obscure gem in the Short North situated next to Impero's coffeeshop is partly under construction right now, but the front area is still open. I like the cozy, intimate vibe. The custom woodworking is absolutely gorgeous and adds a lot of character. I wish I could buy one of those exposed wood tables for my own place! You can buy craft beers by the bottle, order a glass at the bar, or fill up your own growler. To top if off, the one guy who was manning the whole place(at least yesterday) is super chill and helpful and lets you sample beers! Definitely coming back.

In a city chalk full of bars, that has a disparity between quality and quantity, this place is everything you are looking for in a beer bar. The staff is great, the selection is better than the trendiest of bottle shops on either coast. House beer is the place you want to be for fantastic beer, great people, (actual) decent music and ambiance.

  • Mike K.

Small place with great decor inside. Decent selection of beer on tap and in refrigerator. Problem here is apathetic service and cork fee on bottled beer. When I walked in there were a whole 4 people at the bar and yet the fedora wearing bartender could not acknowledge my existence. No thanks, I'll go to Bodega.

THANK GOODNESS! someone has done it right. i lived in san francisco for a few years and fell madly in love with city beer store (a craft beer bar/take away joint). i was hoping that this rad concept wouldn't just be unique to san francisco and my prayers have been answered. house beer rules. in fact, i think it's even better than my beloved city beer. the beers on tap are not only delicious and varied, but interesting and well priced. they have 2 fridges full of tasty to-go packs and bottles as well as a dry shelf in case you don't want it cold. the staff is friendly and full of knowledge and when i walked in, they encouraged me to take a seat at the bar and get to know the beers. i sampled a few of them (my favorite being the bells two hearted *we can't get that in california*) and ended up coming back the next night to try more. the music was excellent, vibe was cool, crowd was lively and happy. i think this place will be on everyone's radar soon, so get in there and make friendly with the staff now!! the bonus is the really amazing history behind the decor of the bar and the story of how house beer came about. ask one of the bartenders to tell you the story and show you the photos. NOT TO BE MISSED. cheers to great beer!

I'm more comfy here than a beer bottle in a yelp coozy! We have tried to go here 3 times before for a brew, but it has been so busy there is nowhere to sit! I wear heels, I hate standing. Yup, the reason this place isn't 5 stars is because it is too popular and too small, which makes them the worst! (sarcasm) The beer - yum! With only 6 beers on tap they don't waste a thing! They have a great stout, pale ale, ipa...they cover it all with local to far seasonal beers. Yum. My husband loved his stout. I had a pale ale, and it was a little to heavy for me (I'm blaming the dinner I stuffed myself with). When the staff saw I hadn't gulped down my beer like usual, they quickly recommended a lighter but flavorful beer, had me try it and I loved it! They also urged me to ask to taste beers -- hold. the. phone. -- this place cares what I want to drink?! After this, I will write them a love letter. I love the decor. I love the staff. I love the location. I also wish I had known we could drink the bottled beer selection -- check them out!!!!!

I like the place, it's small and cozy and has some good beers. I don't think it's anything too special, they need to expand beyond Great Lakes, CBC and Troeg's if they are going to be known as a bigtime craft beer joint, but it's a start. Yes the place is really small, so don't go there if you have a group. It's good for 2-4 peeps.

  • Jeanne L.

This place is really quaint and cute, I'll give it that. The bartenders were friendly. However, if you're going to call yourself House Beer, you should have more than 4 beers on tap, with only a limited bottle selection. The music was also way too loud.

the short north needs more carryout places that have good beer (UDF notwithstanding), so I was excited when I heard this place was opening... but now I find myself going to House Beer just to drink there! It's a really nice, cozy, pleasant little bar, and the staff have always been very friendly and welcoming to us. They also host different events most nights-- book club, etc.-- which I appreciate-- helps build community and so on. It's true that it's a small bar, but they did recently add additional seating near the carryout coolers, so that has helped a bit. And anyway, I mean, it is what it is-- if you want a bigger bar, the Park Street bars are just a few blocks away... overall I think House Beer is a great addition to the neighborhood!

This is a great place, very cozy, a great selection of beer and the bartender was really nice and helpful. You can either sit (and yes there is not much room and yes there is a cork fee for bottled beer) or by your beer and take them home. I would recommend this place ! give it a try !

  • Doug O.

Very nice, cozy atmosphere with good lighting and cool tables carved out of trees. Friendly staff, which is a plus, as a lot of cool bars with great selections have snooty bartenders. The biggest positive is the amazing beer selection. They have a nice range of often hard to find beers on tap and in bottles (which can be opened at the bar or carried out), and perhaps the best Belgian selection in the city. The problem was that I'm not sure they know what they're doing with it. I was served Belgian beers ice cold as if I had ordered a Coors light. I had to sit and cup the beer in my hands for ten minutes before it even approached being the right temperature to drink. Then we had a big bottle of a Belgian beer and they tried to put what was left in the bottle in their cooler. Pretty elementary that you don't freeze good beer--you can't get the most out of the flavors until you let it warm up a bit. My only other complaint was that you have to pay a corkage fee to drink bottles, which really adds up if you sit there for awhile drinking. In the future, I would happily go back and check out their impressive selection, but take my bottles home to avoid the corkage fee and to bring the beers to the right temperature.

Have been to House Beer almost a dozen times, and have yet to taste a bad beer. The atmosphere is VERY cozy, especially toward the beginning of the week when there is no real crowd. Can't say enough about the staff there either. Knowledgeable, easy going, and always gives you the opportunity to taste anything on tap. Definitely a place to try.

The friendliest staff, they seem very open and inviting. I felt like i was in a cosy coffee shop drinking beer in a dim lite room. I will definitely go back and glad this place has added a great value to the short north.

A hipster's Cheers. Where everybody knows your name and looks cool and relaxed while they enjoy one of 6 on tap beers and chats over loud hip music. If you can't tell, this is a good thing. My first time at House Beer for the monthyl Andean Night (Andean Food and Music + beer for $17) I felt like I was a regular. Friendly bar service and super friendly regulars make you feel right at home. Prices are reasonable and the draft list well curated. Don't miss Andean Night! Amazing food! They have a to-go beer cooler for purchasing bevies on the way out and usually don't offer food. Never seen House Beer ever even though you drive or walk through the SN all the time? It's because they are on the first floor of the Jackson (with their own entrance) next to Impero. They don't have a sign because of the condos, so you really have to look or you'll miss it. And really House Beer is not to be missed over many less appealing bars in the vicinity.

I arrived at House Beer around 2pm on a Saturday. We were 2 of 4 people there, including the owner, which is a refreshing change of pace in the Short North. Now me, I really enjoy a quieter space where I can sit and have a conversation, so this place was perfect for that! Their beer selection is pretty good, I am a wheat beer fan & there wasn't much of that. My boyfriend, a fan of all beer, found a few he liked. I also like that you can drink it there, or purchase it to take home. We talked to the owner for quite some time and he recommended a fantastic drink for me, grapefruit beer with a splash of vodka. It was phenomenal. We belly'd up to the bar next to the books where we found a few funny ones. We talked, read, drank. The ambiance is a little dark, a lot of earth tones and art on the wall (from what I understand the art changes daily). I love it her and will frequent here when I am in the short north.

Craft, bottled beer lovers stop in. The place meets its purpose. Doubles as a "build your own six" and run. Small place, dim lit, appropriate tunes with 5-7 taps. Stop in, have a couple, take a couple to-go. Small groups only. -Z

House Beer fits a missing niche in the Short North bar landscape. Small, quaint, and intimate, it is the ideal place for pensive conversations or playful banter to take place. The interior is tastefully decorated, with Edison lightbulbs, an urban feel, and dark hues--very man-caveish. We went on Thursday which happened to be record night (!!). Hipster enough, but surprisingly not pretentious. Bravo! Further, the beer selection is superior to what currently exists. My girlfriend had a bomber of the Prairie (out of Tulsa, OK) Sour Ale, a delicious beer that is a fresh take on new-age beer. It almost tastes like kombucha, to compare. My boyfriend had a draft of The Uncle, a new blend from Rhinegeist. In typical Ohio-bar fashion, House Beer proudly features an inclusive selection of Ohio breweries. But what truly stands out, in my opinion, is the can and bomber beer selection. The selection features breweries I have never heard of, which to me is comparable to a small bookstore that hand selects the books it decides to sell. Plus, now you have the option to buy a can to go, rather than a six-pack. I have always desired this option, just one can to go please, thanks! Glad to see House Beer has decided to make this happen.

The place where beer resides... House Beer is pretty fantastic if you are looking for a cold brew in an intimate atmosphere. They have a number of beers on tap and an excellent selection of bottles. Once you've picked your poison, there are a few tables and stools to sit and enjoy. It's not the biggest bar, but it is always a nice change of scene. It definitely channels the hipster vibe. It's also slightly more low-key, which is good for conversation and witty banter. No complaints here.

Super cute and quaint. The bartender gave me a good recommendation, and I even tried a dark beer I liked here. Perfect place to sit back and relax in the middle of your day near the short north!

Love this place! You can browse through the bottled beer yourself instead of having to squint and lean over the bar. I found a Ten Fidy, which I hadn't seen anywhere else in Columbus lately. Pretty cool! The bar itself is pretty small, and I didn't find the barstools very comfy. I did like the collection of beer books near one corner of the bar. What's better than learning about beer while enjoying a beer? The bartender was friendly and helped me find the restaurant I was headed to afterward. This is just a beer lover's haven, and I look forward to going back.

Rad space. Simple. Warm. Usually pretty chill and quiet. A great selection of beers. It's deconstructed in nature. Don't expect a bunch of frills beyond great beers. The owner often sits on his laptop and works while you drink; don't take it personal, he's just got shit to do. I've hosted innovation meetings, casual dates, and solo beers in this space, which makes it A-Ok for me.

I'm a fan of this place. I love it when a brewery has a tap takeover here since they only get to take over four taps or so. They have very few taps is what I'm trying to say. So you are in the know, a place that has a well curated 3-6 tap system is way better than a place that has 50 or 60 taps. It's perceived that a place with 60 taps will have a better selection and to some degree that's true but many of those beers will be sitting on that line for months and they start to go bad. Large places like that usually don't pull a keg off until it's gone or it's infected so if it's just tasting stale and old, sorry, you didn't need that $10 after all. A well curated place that has 6 taps won't have old beer. They will blow through stuff at an alarming rate which means they too will have a great selection (as an aside, the "great" selection comes from the person doing the beer buying so if one or more of those tap handles is some American macro-beer then you'll just be drinking fresh piss instead of old piss which isn't great) and it will be fresh. That description is House Beer: small place with a fast moving tap rotation. Many who go to this postage stamp place get tap beer, which is fine. Like I said earlier, it's fresh and unique. But don't overlook their coolers. Their coolers seem to be where the gems are. It blows my mind how they will still have Hop Slam in March or Hop JuJu in April when those beers come out in January/February, and sell out in hours. They have Three Floyds in the coolers almost always and there are super rare Dieu du Ciel! (Three Floyds of Canada) beers in there as well, among others. The reason for this is because people buy tap beer. When I go, I rarely give a damn what they have on tap, I go straight for their coolers. They are located down town in the Short North so there is no parking to be had. Sure there is street parking but let's be real, there is no parking to be had. Plan on walking for a bit to get to this place. It's also very small. It's not hard to walk by and miss. They have four tables with a few seats at each table and a few seats at the bar. On the plus side, because you can't fit too many people in here you will actually be able to have a conversation with whoever you're with and not be hoarse at the end of the night. Music is also provided by someone who's playing some old school vinyl. In one sitting I think I heard Tool followed by Beach Boys. It's eclectic to say the least.
