It's rich. It's creamy. It full of fat. And one of my favorite foods... Ever. The location is nice. Big. Roomy. Play area for kids. (Warning it's loud in there). Separate area for enjoying ice cream.

I love Graeter's ice cream! Especially their mint chocolate chip. It's definitely the standard that I compare all other places too and so far no other place's mint chocolate chip has met the challenge. This location is by far the biggest that I've been to. They had a party area where you can have birthday parties as well as a playground area (If you have kids, socks are required for them to play on the play area). They also carry a lot of flavors here. Some of the other Graeter's I've been too only had mint chocolate chip as a seasonal flavor but apparently this location carries it year round! Bonus!

Hands down, best ice cream I've ever had! I was kinda bummed because the tours weren't open to explore, or that was the impression we were given.. But my son and his friend loved the play area!

First of all, this Graeter's location is very nice inside and is the "main office" of Graeter's in Columbus. It's very spacious, has a play area, is nicely decorated, and hosts many birthday parties. The service is also very friendly, although the girl serving me gave me a wrong sample and nearly messed up my order before I corrected her as she was in the process. The ice cream at Graeter's is very good, although not quite as good as Jeni's in my opinion. The 1870 Tower dessert sunday was very good- a small, frozen and heated (but still very tasty) bundt cake topped with the ice cream of your choice, walnuts, fudge, whipped cream, and a cherry. It is $5.45 for one scoop and all that or $5.95 for two scoops, so I went with two of course! Ice cream and cake being one of my favorite combinations, this was definitely a hit! Overall the ice cream is a little expensive, especially if just ordering bowls or cones when you could get pints for nearly the same price in stores, and Graeter's isn't the best ice cream I've ever had. It's definitely a very good option for premium ice cream, however, and this location is very nice.

Birthday party for my 3 year old grandson. They have a wonderful play area for the kids who had a blast. Lots of room to romp and even with another party going on everything went smoothly. The staff was super friendly and helpful. Returned to try their new Bourbon Pecan Chocolate Chip ice cream and it was absolutely yummy. The place is clean and the servers friendly. Great hand crafted ice cream. What more do you need?

  • Han V.

The prices were $2.75 for single scoop in sugar cone and $4.75 for 2 scoops in waffle cone. Blueberry pie and toffee were my favorite out of the flavors that we tried. Hand crafted and packed--there were plenty of huge chocolate chunks in the mint chocolate chip from their unique way of making their "chips". The ice cream itself was also nice and creamy. It was a great treat to have on a hot summer day!

I love Graeter's, and this is one of their largest retail locations (if not the largest) in Columbus. On top of that, they have a large indoor play area for kids. I should love this location! But unfortunately, this is probably my least favorite Graeter's location in Columbus. First of all, they're super busy, even in the middle of winter. But on the other hand, they have some of the slowest staff I've ever encountered at a Graeter's. The line seems to move twice as fast at the Graeter's on Lane Avenue compared to this location. And even though the building is so large, the number of available seats is surprisingly low. And they don't really have much of an outdoor seating area either, so that option is lost in the summer time. It's not unbearably horrible, and the ice cream is still just as tasty as the other locations... but if I had a choice, I would pick the Lane Avenue Graeter's every time over this location on Bethel.

Really yummy ice cream! Fresh and with a great amount of ingredients! They have an area for kids to play as well as a place for tours on how to make ice cremes. Surprised to know that they've been in the business since 1870! We had cookies & creme, black raspberry chocolate chip, salted caramel, & maple black walnut! All were very good!!

You never grow too old for ice cream! You are never too hip, too cool, too successful, or too grand to not want a few dips of fattening, diet destroying, calorie ballooning, bliss making orgasmic heaven. Luckily we have a few great ice cream places in town to make our smarmy, know-it-all doctors mad. One of the tops--Graeter's! This regional Ohio chain has had this store as long as I can remember. The large brick building and spacey parking lot gives away its popularity. On the inside is a huge, white soda-shop dinning room. To the right is a large children play area with rides, slides, and enough fun for your child to run off the catnipish sugar high of their treat. To the left is a self-guided factory tour for my fellow history and food science geeks. Their ice cream in made at a certain quantity at a time, and is different than most mass producers. On the weekend the line can be long. But don't play a long cellphone game for the staff is well trained and will serve you fast. They have everything you expect: sundaes, splits, cones of all sizes and types. I got my favorite--chocolate milkshake--real milk. They did ask me a kind if strange question: do I want only chocolate syrup, or only chocolate ice cream, or both? Well I want both, AND in a chocolate cup, AND a vat of chocolate on the side, so I can swim in! Unfortunately, they didn't have those options. :-( The shake is perfect. Graeter's is not as wild as our local ice cream goddess Jeni, but the quality is comparable. It is mainstream stuff, not a place for taste bud adventuring. It's only downfall is price. $5 and change for a typical sized large; but you get what you pay for. Quality is the goal here. A family on a budget is better off buying Graeter's at a supper market and dishing at home, or going to a standard dairy dip. ( though not the DQ across the street, see my review.) But for a special treat, that is more mainstream than Jen's, this is the place.

This is a pretty cool ice cream place! I decided to come here when a friend from out of town was visiting with her daughter. The kids loved the play area! There is no extra charge for the play area so it's a great low priced outing for the kids. The bad part about it is that it attracts everyone. There were some pretty rough kids there and my son got knocked down several times. It didn't stop him from having fun though. We got ice cream after playing. The employees were all friendly and helpful. I got a mint chocolate chip milkshake and everyone else got ice cream cones. I really enjoyed mine. It was pretty thick but tasted great. The cones were also huge! I don't think anyone was able to finish theirs. Afterwords we went through the little museum area. It was pretty small. They had those bag games there so the kids played with that for a while. I had a great time here. We will definitely make another trip here soon!

This particular location has everything you could want. Ice cream, sodas, phosphates (!), tours, and a playland for the kiddies. Last night, we also discovered that the windows are perfect for watching lightning as it rolls over the northside of town. My favorite part of the ice cream here (besides the amazing flavors) is the size of the chocolate "chips". They are really chunks and even that might be underselling it a bit. I had a chip that was the size of a teaspoon... it was fantastic.

  • Brandon M.

What a great place! I was in town for my sister's wedding and my daughter wanted ice cream, for some reason. There was a Dairy Queen across the street, but who wants to eat that crap? Highlights: * Hyper-friendly staff, but definitely not awkward * They took the time to help my daughter find the right flavor, which was really nice. * Really clean * idk about the other locations, but this one had a massive play area, which my daughter didn't see until we were leaving, which meant we weren't leaving. * my daughter had lemon sorbet and it was amazing. I had a hot fudge sunday. The ice cream was great. The hot fudge was bitter, which means they probably use a dark chocolate. Not bad, just didn't expect it. If you're looking for a great ice cream experience, definitely check this spot out.

    (4)
  • Stacy Z.

They're usually pretty empty whenever we visit (only a couple times a year, usually not ice cream season). A nice open store though. The museum side leaves a bit to be desired, but the playground side is super fun for kids. Oh, and they have good ice cream too. Love that we can get ice cream, and then let the kids run and play for a bit.

    (4)
  • Holly C.

Get the black raspberry chip! You can sample anything you want too. Honestly, it's creamy smooth fattening ice cream with a lot of different varieties for you to choose from, you'll definitely find something for you here. If you have kids, there's a nice play area and they also do parties. I've never been here where you can see them doing a tour/demo on the left side, but that looks interesting.

    (4)
  • Melissa W.

My favorite flavor is the peanut butter chocolate chip but the black raspberry chocolate chip is a close second. The chips are not the tiny morsels but instead they're chunks of cocoa heaven. This was my cheat dessert after 3 months of no sweets. It was definitely worth it. Only wish that Kroger's didn't stop selling the pb chocolate chip pint. At least we're lucky to find the Graeter's brand down here in Atlanta. Oh, one of these days, I'll try the buckeye blitz flavor...

    (4)
  • Erica W.

OMG this place should be against the law. The Buckeye Blitz, the coconut chocolate chip... the PRETZEL come! Heaven!!

    (5)
  • Jeremy S.

Awesome ice cream. Love the mocha chocolate chip with a scoop of coconut. This location always seems to skimp on the size of the scoops though.

    (3)
  • Troy S.

Mocha Chip = goodness. The chips very in size from huge to slivers that work very nice to eat. The ice cream is creamy and I have never had a bad experience. This location also has a great play area for kids along with plenty of space. Today three different large groups were having parties there. My wife and I are keeping this as a later option in a few years for our kid's birthday party.

This is a great place to take the kids if you are on the Northwest side and looking to get ice cream and also need a place for the kids to play. They have a big indoor, ice cream themed playground next to the dining area (safely enclosed behind glass doors so that people without kids can also enjoy their ice cream). If you are here in the summer, be prepared to wait in line. We came here at 8:30 on a Saturday night and waited for about 30 minutes. As far as the ice cream and frozen treats, though, I personally really prefer the other ice cream shop in town (starts with a J and ends in eni's). But, again, if you are in the neighborhood and looking for a way to entertain the kids, this is the place to go.

  • John R.

The butter pecan ice cream is certainly not distinguished given the price they are asking. While there are nuts, the favor is totally lacking. Better ice cream and cheaper at Rite Aid which tastes like the real deal!

  • Ruchu T.

Tried Graeter's for the first time last weekend. I was quite full from dinner so I shared a single scoop with my girlfriend. The blue cosmo ice cream at Mitchell's (a NE Ohio ice cream chain), which is a blue cotton candy flavored ice cream, has been our favorite. Graeter's has a similar flavor which they simply call cotton candy. The Graeter's version is less sweet but has marshmallow specks mixed in which gives it bursts of sweetness. The ice cream was creamy and has good texture. I can't judge how their other flavors are, but if its as good as the cotton candy, this is a wonderful place for ice cream!

  • Samantha A.

Graeter's rocks. The classic ice cream spot can't be beat, and its a lot cheaper than Jeni's. Come here when you are jonesing for a local treat with a traditional flavor, like mint chocolate chip or a rootbeer float. This location is very cool with the large ice cream themed play area for kids under 10, and the viewing area where they make the ice cream. Join the Graeters club to rack up points for free t-shirts and ice cream. Recommend: the amazing chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwich with black raspberry chocolate chip ice cream --- so amazing you will eat the entire thing even though its huge.

I first fell in love with Graeter's many, many years ago. It was always a special trip made while visiting my grandparents in northern Kentucky during my childhood summers. I couldn't get enough of that delicious French pot ice cream. Sad truth, I still can't. I just love it. The staff at this location are super friendly and welcoming. They are heavy-handed in their scooping - which means more for the money and makes me a very happy girl. If you are lucky enough to get in on a tour, you can actually watch them make the ice creams, pour in the melty, yummy chocolate, and hand-pack it into their various sized containers. If I had to pick just one favorite flavor, I'd go with the Strawberry Chip every time. I love it. There is just something about the rich and creamy sweet strawberries and those massive and delicious chunks of chocolate that makes me happy. Unfortunately, it's a seasonal flavor. =(

Visiting relatives this past weekend and we decided to go and get ice cream. This is the first time visiting a Graeters Ice Cream store for us. I have to say it was wonderful. The ice cream is as delicious as the tour says. If you have not taken the tour you should it is not long and is very informative. I could not believe all the flavors that they have and the wait staff were helpful and pleasant. Great place for everyone.

This is simply the best ice cream. Any flavor that has the delicious chocolate swirls are just heaven. From the mint chocolate chip, to the peanut butter chip, mocha chip, and black cherry chip, I just can't get enough. They are all so luscious, rich and creamy. Let's see anyone else try to top these glorious choices. Every time we drive to the Columbus area from Buffalo, we load up our cooler, as they conveniently have dry ice. Just yum!

Toffee chip is the way to go! I'm so sad they took all three Graeter's away from me in Lexington, so I have to cross the border into Ohio to enjoy this diary delight. It's a more expensive than what I usually pay for ice cream, but the splurge is worth it. They obviously use great ingredients to achieve the taste. I guess one great thing about visitng my sister-in-law is that tshe is located just down the street from this Graeter's. I always look at the silver lining--ha ha! :)

I am so indifferent to ice cream. Either take it or leave it. This, my friends, is the best ice cream in the entire world. Costs a mini fortune. Worth every penny.

The first time I had Graeter's I was blown away by their Black Cherry ice cream. I hate cherry ice cream and I thought it was phenomenal! Oprah said it was her favorite ice cream, and it was hyped like crazy. Since then I've had Graeter's several times and it's lost it's luster. It's just some pretty good ice cream. I've had a lot of ice cream since my first meeting with Graeter's and I've had a lot better. It didn't help that the ice cream was way too soft. Some friendly smiling faces might help too. It's a ice cream place! Isn't it supposed to be happy?

I came to this place just to get some ice cream with my girlfriend. To our surprise, you can watch all the ice cream making through glass walls. We went on the small self guided tour with all kinds of interesting info on how they make ice cream at Graeter's. We also had a very good banana split. I would highly recommend the split over getting the cones. The split comes with 2 toppings, 2 scoops, some banana, whip cream, PECANS :), and a cherry if you wish. I love the pecans so this was a winner in my book. We had coffee ice cream and the Buckeye flavor which had peanut butter and chocolate. I really enjoyed the coffee flavor. Also the raspberry topping is tasty.

Graeter's is my favorite! And out of all the locations, this one is the one I always go to! This location had a large indoor play area for kids, and every first Thursday of the month they will hand out frosty paws for dogs! My favorite is the Cookie Monster sundae, I MUST have one every week! All of the staff are super friendly and they always give me huge scoops of ice cream!

Greaters is is ice cream still made the way it was conceived to be made, before the introduction of modern food factory production methods which in some case truly take away from the quality of the ice cream. Additionally, the ingredients are top of the line, from Madagascar vanilla to hand picked fresh peaches. You will not find bubble gum or Zotz or pickled avocado flavors here, sometimes creativity is defined as doing the standards better than anyone else. The Ice cream is great, but don't go to this particular location if the only reason you picked it is to do a self guided factory tour. They've converted the factory part into a storage area, I believe I overheard they don't even make ice cream at this location anymore. You can still read about the history and/or watch a short video, and peer in the glass to see skids of straws and broken machinery. You can learn anything they have in the "factory tour" area from their web site; honestly, they need to make it look more like a museum or shut it down, it's a trashy waste of time and really detracts form their overall quality appeal. Not to mention I passed two other locations on my way there and feel gypped.

Double Chocolate chip need I say more? Holy wow, !!! Nothing else there even compares. Good in a milkshake or just a scoop. This place is doing ice cream right.

I had this ice cream all the time growing up. It's been a long time and the reunion was just as sweet as I expected. I would never order black raspberry chip ice cream by default, but this flavor is amazing and definitely worth a try. My favorite is cinnamon for the holidays. Lots of space to hang out and pints to go! My SF ice cream shops have some strong competitors but this is the best in the Midwest.

This building is the result of a weird mutation between great ice cream and a McDonald's playland. On one side is some "local" delicious ice cream and on the other a huge ice cream inspired play area for kids. If you don't have kids skip ahead. If you do have kids, the playground is disgusting. It smells like a dirty sock and your kids will need to be sanitized when they depart the play area. But you can't beat their ice cream. It really is delicious and its always nice to support an Ohio company.

Good classic Ice Cream, but does not compare to Jeni's

There initially was a long line with only one employee filling orders, but within a few minutes the manager rallied his troops to get the line moving quickly. The manager even helped fill orders. It was $10 for three single scoop orders, a bit on the expensive side, but the ice cream is delicious. We visit this location regularly. Also the play room is too rough for young children.

Oh my goodness! Can I give this six stars?! The ice cream is amazingly creamy, delicious & they don't skimp on the mix-ins. I ordered a chocolate dipped pretzel cone and think that might be the best ice cream holder ever created (I'm not a cone an usually)! For the ice cream I got the buckeye- chocolate ice cream with peanut butter filled truffly chocolate balls. Sinfully divine! My husband got blueberry pie ice cream which had actual Oh my goodness! Greater's ice cream old-school, traditional. If you like the style, it simply doesn't get any better than this. The thing that sets Graeter's apart is the the way they make their chocolate chip ice creams (i.e. mint chocolate chip). They blend in liquid chocolate just before they set the ice cream which gives it a very unique texture. While it sometimes results in huge chunks, they add to the charm. The Black Rasberry chip is unique and delicious. The Bethel Road store is the headquarters for all the local franchises and this is where they make all the ice cream sold in the Columbus and Dayton areas. They have a huge play area, a generously spaced seating area and a room where you can watch them make the ice cream.

What's all the fuss about? I have a sweet tooth that not even the Gilmore Girls can rival. I've had my fair share of ice cream. But I just don't get the Graeter's hype. I understand that they're steeped in tradition that goes back to 1870. But their flavors seem so...typical: butter pecan, cookie 'n' cream, peanut butter chip, cookie dough, strawberry. The farthest stretch of the imagination is black raspberry chip. And c'mon, only two sorbets: lemon and raspberry. Since they've had over 130 years to mull it over, you'd think they'd come up with something new . Though I will give them a little credit for their seasonal flavor, apple cider sorbet, which I found online but wasn't available during my visit. I usually go for the strangest item on the menu. But, not being able to find one, I fell back on my old friend, mint chocolate chip. I paid almost $4 for a double scoop, sans cone or waffle. It tasted like every other mint chocolate chip ice cream I've ever had. I guess I was expecting some sort of nectar from the gods. If you ask me, Graeter's isn't great, but it's good.

Ice cream is as personal as pizza - and people can certainly become defensive about their choices... I think it's perfectly fine to enjoy traditional flavors, but it's good to stay open-minded about new ice cream concepts. With that said, I certainly appreciate the artisinal nature of Jeni's Ice Cream, but Graeters is fabulous-flavored traditional ice cream and sorbet. Graeters can be categorized as one of the better traditional ice cream parlors that I've experienced. It's OK to like tradition. I don't think the two styles of ice cream making should be compared. I tend to avoid writing about chains, and while plenty of locals view Graeters as a Columbus phenomena, it is actually a chain based out of Cincinnati. No bother... I will review it anyhow. Some Graeters are a lot bigger than others, and as local headquarters, this is one of the larger ones in the city. I am a bit of a purist when it comes to defining the atmosphere of a place and struggle to call this an old-fashioned soda fountain, because it's not. However, plenty of other Graeters have a nice vintage feel to them, which is enough to invoke a slight nostalgia. I'm OK with the ice cream parlor experience Graeters provides- if that's what you want. I go for the ice cream!

Graeter's at Bethel was recently the host of my son's fourth birthday party, and that'll be the focus of this review. Their ice cream is very good, though as some reviewers have said their flavor choice is a bit traditional. The chocolate chunks in their mint chip, chocolate chip, etc. are all very high quality and add a great flavor to the ice cream, though. Their service for the birthday party was exceptional. We arrived 1/2 hour early to set up, and they were ready to go at 3:30 (the party was at 4:00). While we set up the decorations with their help, both some that they supplied and some that we'd brought ourselves, the kids were able to run around and play on their well-kept-up indoor playground. They supplied punch to the kids as well as the ice cream, and plates, napkins, balloons, and spoons were also supplied. Carolyn, our Graeter's hostess at the party, was very attentive to the kids and had fun with them as she let them safely play with some dry ice magic tricks she did, and the kids loved that a lot. She also kept things clean when there were the inevitable spills of juice, punch, etc. Many times you'll have a party like this and the establishment will limit the offerings to the guests in order to keep things simple. Not so with Graeter's. The kids got to have any kind of ice cream they wanted, which was a great surprise. The toppings were plentiful and various as well. Carolyn did not skimp on the toppings, either! Graeter's kept track of the gifts and the givers, and at the end of the party supplied us with a typed list of gifts for thank you notes. All this for around $9.00 a head - for similarly-attended parties elsewhere we've paid double that amount, and the kids had just as much fun with this party as with any other we've hosted. Graeter's is a great place for a party, and I highly recommend them.

It's impossible for me to give an ice cream place any less than four stars. Impossible! If they serve ice cream, I'm automatically in love. In a city dominated by crazy creative flavors from a woman whose name rhymes with penny, it's traditional flavors like the ones at Graeter's that remind you of summers past & make you appreciate the chocolate chip. In this case it was the chocolate chunk! So many of them in my two scoops of raspberry chip & chocolate chip cookie dough! I'll bet the chocolate chunks took up a good fourth of the space in my cone. The space is huge and apparently great for parties... for kids. You can even watch some of the production in the room neighboring the dining room. They don't do mini scoops (ex: two small scoops for the price of one) which was a bit disappointing since I didn't want two HUGE scoops of my favorite flavors. I ended with two, but let's be real, I wasn't complaining.

This is the main Graeter's in Columbus. The best thing about it is the large play area for children aged 3-6. The ice cream is delicious. I love cookies and cream and buckeye. Check this place out! You won't be disappointed.

  • Brandi F.

This location is awesome - you can see where the ice cream is made and there is a large indoor play area for kids. Graeters is something that I loved when I lived in Columbus, but now that I've been away, and had some great ice cream experiences, when I had Graeters again, it seemed very sub-par. The chocolate in the raspberry chip (which was my favorite), is waxy with little taste. The ice cream melts quickly and isn't as rich as I had remembered it. It's still a great place to go if you live locally, but I will no longer crave it when I'm away.
