My wife and I ran into Fred, the Actual brewer, at the Barley's Real Ale Fest and he told us they were open for business now and that we should stop by, so we came a couple days later. I'm very excited that we did. Fred led us on a tour of the facility, including the tasting room, the lab, and the brewery. I've been on several brewery tours, but this one far exceeded all others. Fred spoke to us in great detail about how the brew was brewed, but he didn't just give us a basic overview of the steps. He really dug into the science of how and why things worked, and it was fascinating. He explained how different chemicals and minerals in the water affected the process and the finished product, and explained how important cleanliness was to the process. Afterward, we tried some Fat Julian, which is completely amazing. After trying the beer, we actually stayed there for a couple hours just talking. Fred was incredibly generous with his time, and was affable and funny. Actual is still ramping up their facility a little bit, but soon they will be in full production and their tasting room area will be fully ready for visitors. I definitely recommend you stop by and try some of their delicious and pleasantly unique beers and, if you have the opportunity, talk to Fred.

My wife and I went here on a Friday night and it was difficult to find. We GPS'd it but because it's really off the beaten path and it's in an industrial complex, it threw us off. I think if we had known what we were looking for, we'd have had more luck. The good news is that once we found it, we were surprisingly pleased. I felt like I was walking into someone's house party, in a good way. There were people hanging out outside (it's pretty small inside and it was a nice night and there was a food cart), and more inside the tasting room. We asked for a tasting of everything they had on tap and they only had four. We tried those four and then they ran out of one brew and replaced it with another. That worked in our favor because the bartender had us try the new one too. I don't remember which five we tried, but the only one that really made a positive impression was the Conductor, Imperial Rye IPA. We ended up buying a bottle of it before we left. You may wonder why I gave this place four stars when I didn't care much for most of their beers. It was really the experience, including the atmosphere and the service, that earned Actual Breaking four stars from me. While sitting at the bar, even though it felt like many of the people knew each other, the bartenders engaged my wife and I in conversation and made us feel welcome. Better yet, through our conversation, a man sitting at the bar, who turned out to be a sales rep, overheard that we had never been there and took us on a tour! He was really nice and seemed like he really cared about us having a positive experience. They have a nice setup in the back to make the beer and you can tell although it came from a homegrown operation originally, it was very professional. There is also a game room off of the main tasting room which has an arcade game, lots of board games, and an original Nintendo system hooked to a TV. It was a very original microbrewery compared to all others I've been to. That coupled with the friendly service will bring us back one day. I'll need to try more of their beers to make a final decision on them. And we definitely enjoyed the bottle of Conductor at our home about a week later.

stopped in tonight (5/6/15) because i heard there was some kind of anniversary celebration. i have enjoyed the actual products nicely. in the last few weeks, they switched their pint glasses to either 10 or 12 ounce glasses and charged a fat four bucks per beer, so with tip it's five. i like your brews guys, but i won't visit your place again. i'll pick up a growler from the joints that carry you if i see it

Visit their tap room every time I fly into Columbus. The beer is the first thing that comes to mind. I don't know much about beer, but I am always struck by the taste of everything I drink here. I get welcomed like family every time and the people are all warm and inviting. There's a perfect balance of work and play going on-and I find it a nice change to the usual bar scene. Seeing how the beer is made as you drink it is hard to top.

So, do you like good beer? Go to Actual. Do you like a bit of an adventure finding the place? Go to Actual. Do you think you're the best at Mario Kart? Go to Actual. It's a brewery making amazing craft beer, tucked into a tiny strip of warehouses near the airport, run by a mad scientist who could very easily be mistaken for a sasquach at any given time. It's the kind of place where Fred Lee (the aforementioned bigfoot) may just stop in the middle of a conversation, look at you, and say "Hey. Want to try something cool?", and before you can answer, he walks into the back and pulls out a half keg of something he's been infusing with god knows what and puts it on the taps. The whole place runs with a casual, relaxed, everyone's here to have fun kind of vibe (and yes, they really do have Mario Kart there, and Fred claims that anyone who can defeat him in every single track can get a free growler. Godspeed and take your blue shells if you want to try.) The beer itself? It's awesome. From the meaty Fat Julian Stout to their unique Conductor Rye IPA, everything I've tasted has been amazing, and they'll happily sell growlers of what's on tap or bottles of other available beers from their catalog. You can find Actual around town in quite a few establishments, and with their new canning line it'll be in more and more stores, but there's something fun about experiencing the beer at the (kinda crazy, kinda surreal) source. Get a CBUS Ale Trail book, go get a stamp for the visit, and go try a few pints of the good stuff.

I love ABC, their entire staff is full of mad scientist and passionately crazy about beer types, just my kind of people. Fred's always willing to show you around and talk shop, and he's helped out the local community by hosting events and helping groups (like our homebrew club) out. My favorite food truck they get is land yacht BBQ, fantastic stuff. It's a bit hard to find, but if you go in the evening, just look for where the cars are parked in the parking lot, or for the food truck, and it will be an easy find. The beer? yeah, it's great. They're bringing in styles of beer that the larger micros in Columbus shy away from (eg berliner weisse, saison), and they're fantastic. They also do regular limited releases (cherry barrel aged fat julian is a rare but awesome treat). Worth a trip to discover it if you haven't yet.

This is my favorite brewery in Columbus. You can't beat the geniuses who work here. Everyone is solid and they make this diehard ANTI-IPA drinker a fan of IPA's. Just saying they have mad brewing skills. Check them out wherever great beer is sold or take it straight from the source!!

It is incredibly difficult to find this place, so much so that if it wasn't for the superb experience, I would struggle with giving them more than 3 stars. Hiding away near the airport is a brewing company in an unexpected place - an old industrial park with bad signage. Encouraging patron by partnering with good trucks, it's an interesting place to visit for a great glass of beer. Personally speaking I enjoy my beer best out of a frozen mug, but glasses were running short during my visit do I was happy to get one. The staff were very cool, and really excited about their product. They let me sample each beer which is always a plus. The partnership with OH!Burgers makes me like them even more.

I've been going here since the beginning of their taproom space and while it's evolved over the past couple of years, the beer is still good, the people are still friendly, and they now have food trucks on most nights. Their Fat Julian remains one of the best locally made beers in town. It's fun to take people there for the first time. As you turn off James/Steltzer and make your way into the poorly lit, industrial area where Actual is located, your passenger starts to squirm and his eyes dart frantically around. I always think, "leave the gun, take the beer" as I drive up. Next time you buy a bottle of Actual beer, here or elsewhere, take a few minutes to study the label. Mira packs them with visual puns and references, and it's fun to try to find them all.

I have been frequenting Actual Brewing for the past several months. Although the location is challenging to find the first time, each visit proves more rewarding than the previous for me. The premise is very simple - fun, friendly, straightforward people serving unique, straightforward beers. First off, you may notice that the tap room resembles an apartment living room or small, dark pub reminiscent of a number of European (think Amsterdam Brown Cafe or south-German local pub) drinking establishments. It is small, dimly lit, with seemingly misplaced odds-and-ends of decoration and wobbly chairs. You may feel confused and, deep down, you may feel a desire to turn around and leave. Don't. The taproom is like this on purpose, because the employees and owners of Actual want 'customers' to feel like guests, like they are being welcomed into their home. A home with a large brewery in the back. Pride in their home and in what they've done is evident on the faces and in the words of the people you will meet. It is genuine. On visiting, you will meet one of several bartenders whose focus it is to assist you in enjoying their beers. They have thorough knowledge of each of the brews, the flavors you may enjoy depending on your palate preferences, and possible parings with a visiting food truck or home-cooked flavors you can enjoy yourself. You will also probably meet one or more of the brewers if you visit during the week. Both they and the bartenders are home brewers, so almost any question you will have, including aspects of eastern philosophy, are answerable. Their pride has also been earned. Their beers are excellent, each and every one, batch after batch. Their pilot brews are excitingly unique experiments diverging cleverly from an established style and their standard recipes are executed reliably each time, produced to the same high standard. Although it is difficult to predict what beers individuals will enjoy, Actual Brewing always has a light lager, strong stout, and several ales from which to choose on draft or conditioned in bottles. I recommend Actual Brewing highly, suggesting only that you come to drink great beer with friends, not to party hard. There are plenty of those places in Columbus, but this is more low-key and it seems to me that most of the clientele and professionals at Actual prefer it that way.
