I've dined in Baba India Restaurant years back with my husband and sister in law. Back then the food was delicious. My second time returning with a friend, Brandy V. The restaurant has not changed one bit. The building is old, however they keep it clean. We had dinner on a Thursday night and was seated right away. It was pretty busy. Our server was very friendly. He took our drink orders (was very quick with bringing it to us) right away. A couple minutes later we ordered dinner. I got Matter Paneer- which is fresh mild cheese gently cooked with tender green peas and spices and my friend Brandy got the Chicken Jalfrezi - which is tender chicken cooked with green peppers, tomatoes and onions. We also got a side order of the Naan Bread. We got our meals REALLY quick!! The food was really delicious! My Matter Peener had a great spicy kick (spice level 4), Basmati rice and Naan bread was fresh and warm. My only complaint is that they did not put enough mild cheese in my bowl. My friend also enjoyed her meal. Our server did check back with us and also made sure our waters were refilled. Overall, this was a great dining experience. They are very consistent with their meals. I will definitely return.

I had read reviews that were anywhere from meh to phenomenal so I came in with an open mind. I immediately noticed that the staff is very friendly and eager to help. I'm not the most experienced with Indian food so it was nice that the waiting staff was willing to answer multiple questions on what other patrons had ordered and what we may like. It's a very inviting environment for people who may be newer to Indian food. I ordered the shrimp vindaloo and my girlfriend ordered the chicken tikka saag with a side of the Chef Special nan-a-tandoori bread (stuffed with garlic, onions, chicken, and potatoes). We were both trying dishes we don't usually get and neither of us were unsatisfied. Both dishes came with generous portions and filled both of us. I may have set my expectations for the stuffed bread a little too high, but it was still delicious by itself and dipped in the dishes. The vindaloo was a little sweeter than I was was expecting, but it was still good and tikka saag had excellent flavor. We ordered a 6 on the spice scale, the highest level, and they were surprisingly spicy. It was nice to finally go somewhere that actually gives you something spicy when you ask for it. For those of you who don't enjoy spicy dishes, be warned and use a lower number for the spice. Overall it was a great dinner and I'm excited to go back and sample their other dishes. I would maybe recommend going for lunch in order to try multiple dishes for a cheaper price since most entrees are around $12-$14.

Wholly mediocre. Granted I came in for a buffet but still. The aloo paratha / naan was so dense and difficult to eat. You know that kind of speaks to the rest of the meal. The pakora was dry and lifeless. The chicken in the curries was so dry it sucked all of the water out of my mouth. The kafta might have been made out of sawdust. The sauces were pretty good so I ended up eating sauce and rice. Saag muttar was ok. A little funky from some strong mushroom flavor but the highlight compared to the other dishes. Staff was rude rude rude. Thumbs down

I've ordered takeout from Baba before, but this was the first dine-in experience I'd had. Overall, it was nice, and because it's close to home, it's also super convenient. When asking the waitress about what the best appetizer would be for our group, she recommended the sampler platter. When it arrived it was smaller than expected (not how you would imagine something called a 'platter,') and none of the items were readily identifiable. We took our best guesses and they were certainly tasty, but some explanation would have been nice! I had my favorite: Chicken Tikka Marsala with garlic naan, which did not disappoint. Although I did not drink when I went, I appreciated the fairly comprehensive drink menu, relative to other Indian restaurants in town. Service was very attentive, though our waitress seemed very concerned about the spice levels, which were perfectly fine. Despite the language barrier, everyone was nice, unlike some other Indian restaurants we've visited. One drawback from the experience was that it was surprisingly pricey. For the four of us to eat (and only one of us ordered a drink,) the bill was nearly $100. Though given the rate we go out to eat Indian, we'll live!

Just finished some chicken tikka saag with plain nan. It was so tasty and satisfying!! I got spicy #3 and it was a little hotter than expected, not too hot but I am still feeling it in my mouth (I really did just finish); and I am a fan of reasonably spicy food. This was just my first try so I thought I'd be safe and go in the middle (they do 1-6 spicy level). Anyway the chicken really is what makes this better than Shaan. It was not chewy or overcooked, also cut into more reasonable size. They both have the same portion size, which is the only reason I do give Baba 4 stars. I know this is how Indian places do it, but I would really appreciate 1/2 the food for 1/2 the price. Yes yes of course we all know it is delicious left over, but still.

I cant even remember the last time I was here, my husband doesnt eat Indian food so I always have to go with a friend. Last night a friend of mine had dinner and the food was really good! I had chicken jalfrezi and it was delicious! I normally eat about half and save the rest, well last night I ate all of my food! Clean plate club for me! Service was great, drinks were refilled in a timely manner and the server was very pleasant. Can't wait to go back and fill my need for yummy Indian food!

The food is phenomenal. I don't eat Indian very much but every time I pass this place I want to eat it so bad. It is in a great location and the naan is to die for. For anyone who enjoys authentic cultural cuisine I strongly recommend this place along with asking for one of their recommendations on beer!

  • Aimee S.

Staff seem friendly and nice ;however , the food off the buffet was nasty - the curries were not authentic at all and the rice was too dry. The only thing I could stomach was the tindori chicken and the garlic Nan bread. One of the worst I Indian Buffets so far :(

Nestled in the quaint neighborhood of Oakley, BaBa is easy to get to and find. During the day they have their full menu but most people come for the buffet so they can sample dishes they would typically not order. Experimenting with various sauces and fried vegetables helps you realize how many great dishes are on their extensive menu. The white table cloths speak to their quality and desire to please. In the evening the atmosphere turns more formal but you don't need a tie or dress. (No buffet at dinner). They do a brisk carry out business as well, so you can try it at home. This is the sister location to the original "Ambar India" restaurant in Clifton. Similar menu and high quality. Try the Chicken Sag and make it as spicy as you dare, I do a 2 or 3 on a scale of 1-10 since I don't do spicy. It gives it enough flavor to keep it from being bland. Also enjoy the Tandoori Chicken which is simply grilled chicken with a tangy red sauce baked on.

This is a no frills restaurant. You don't go there for the atmosphere, but if you're looking for authentic Indian cooking, Baba is a great choice. I am a lamb-freak. Give me lamb and I'm a happy camper. It just so happens they have a long list of lamb dishes. Chicken and vegetarian, as well. English is spoken by the wait staff. Other family members who set up the tables don't speak much. They smile, but don't engage in conversation. Well, you're they for the Indian food, not to mingle. You walk out totally satisfied that you've experienced real "Indian".

Better than Shaan - hands down. Baba India consistently serves the best Chicken Tikka Masala in the city. This is my gauge of an Indian restaurant, and I haven't found any place that compares. It has more flavor (maybe it is garlic?) that you crave once you get it. They use a whole roasted chicken - which is much more tender and flavorful than places that use chunks of chicken breast. Some of the best food in the city. Disclaimer: the lunch buffet is not up to par with the dinner meals. Still pretty good though.

  • Ryan Z.

We came here only because Shaan is closed between 3-5pm. In retrospect, I wish we had just waited for Shaan to open up. Baba India was considerably more expensive and the flavors/portion sizes did not justify that price increase. I did think the naan and vegetable samosa were both very good, but the main dishes were underwhelming. I'd only come back here in a pinch.

I'd taken a break from Indian food after getting very sick after eating it on 3 separate occasions. It'd been about 10 years, so I decided to go again, but try different things... The common denominator in each of my previous 3 trips was chicken curry. I started out slow w/ lamb mushroom and naan. This food was soo amazing we went back a couple weeks later for the Chicken Tikka, again it was perfect. The service was great!! The restaurant manager even took some time with us and made a couple of recommendations. Can't wait to go back!!

We got takeout from Baba India. The restaurant is in an old McDonalds, Wendys, or maybe Perkins, across Madison Rd from the Oakley Library. I was in and out quickly with our food. We had called our order in. So I know nothing about their service. I suppose the guy who took our phone order got everything right. That's definitely the difference between 4 stars and 1 star. He also gave me the prices of a few dishes since there are no prices on their online menu. I had the Saag Paneer and my wife had the Paneer Makhanni. If you stumbled across my review of Shaan, I referred to Saag as 'liquefied spinach.' Not really my thing. I don't have any idea why I ordered it. It's like my brain went blank when I was ordering and I ordered two things my wife likes instead of one dish for her and one for me. Maybe she has some kind of power over me. The Makhanni was okay. The flavor of the Paneer was not distinguishable from the rest of the makhanni. Not unpleasant, but it would have been nice to still have some interesting flavor added to your palate each time you bit into one of the cheese cubes. The Saag Paneer actually redeemed Baba, even in my eyes! It was great! Definitely the best saag I've ever had. I'd even order it again if we ever revisit Baba's!!! We'll definitely be back here if my wife is ever craving saag. If there are other dishes on Baba's menu as good as the saag, it could become our favorite Indian restaurant in Cincinnati.

Best Indian food in cincinnati! The only problem is the service thank God for the food because these servers act annoyed that you want to eat there.

  • Jon V.

I ordered the chicken tikka marsala with nan at spice level 4/6 for take out. Positives: The portions were large and the quality of the restaurant was above average for what I've grown accustomed to living in Clifton. Negatives: The price. I paid 16 dollars for what I listed above, and even with the portion size being above average this seemed like too much. Also, it was quite mild for spice level 4/6. If you like it spicy like me I recommend going higher. Takeaway: Pretty good Indian food restaurant that I'll probably visit again. Maybe the buffet is the way to go here.

We came here on a Sunday for Baba's lunch buffet, which is $10 per person. The selection is decent, with a combination of different chicken dishes as the main protein. On food alone, Baba deserves a solid 3 to 4 stars. However, we spotted hair in our food on two separate occasions. They had their kitchen staff make trips out to the buffet line to get food, and none of them wore hair nets. Given the wealth of options in Indian dining around the Greater Cincinnati area, we probably will not be going back to Baba's any time soon.

Yummy Indian buffet right in the heart of Oakley! I've been to every Indian buffet in Cincinnati and this is definitely top 3 for me in the Hyde Park/Oakley area!

Baba is by far my favorite Indian place in Cincinnati. The only things lacking are the service and the interior. The food is excellent. I like it the best here over Guru and Ambar (same owners). This location also appeals to me... though Ambar is probably the best location out of the three. There is plenty of parking here and to go orders are always prompt and correct. Their spice rating is 1-6 and you really do need to order a 5 or 6 to get any sort of spice out of it. I'm always cautious and go with a 3 or 4, but am always disappointed when there's no spice! I'm pretty partial to the lamb korma and saag paneer, but everything is delicious. Great for a casual night out or for take out.

Way too overpriced for below average indian food. 10.50 for a lunch buffet is a little too pricey for any Indian restaurant in Cincinnati. The chicken curry tasted horrible. I have been here multiple times, and I have never seen the servers/the owner lady greet the customers. The waiter slammed the bill on my table after I had my first plate from the buffet. Customer service is horrible. I am not coming back here ever again.

Excessively surly service ruined an otherwise decent dining experience. The BF and I, along with another couple, ate here for dinner on a Sunday night. The server, an older lady, was so surly it turned all of us off the place. I've been to most of the other restaurants in this family of restaurants and the food is pretty much the same at each, but I've never had such bad service as at this experience. From the beginning, we indicated that we wanted separate checks. The BF and I got there first and ordered some sodas, when our friends arrived, the server eventually came over and asked "You ready to order?" She never asked our friends if they wanted any drinks until the BF mentioned it. We ordered an appetizer and that came out within a fairly decent time span; however, our dinner took way longer than I have ever experienced here...or any of the other similar restaurants. It wasn't overly crowded, so not sure if the kitchen was just slow or super busy with carry out orders, or if it was the server's fault. The food, as usual, was pretty good. While the water glasses were filled frequently, our sodas remained empty for most of the meal. The server never asked if we wanted another, nor did she bring a refill. That's a big black mark on my list for server attentiveness. The server brought out the check...yes, one check. Even though we had expressly asked for separate checks. My friend got up and took the check to the server asking for it to be separated. After a little while, the server came back to the table and asked "you want to pay half?" Um, no. We wanted the check to be split into the two separate orders. So, she went away and came back a little bit later with two numbers written on the back. No separate check, just totals. We each had a coupon, which she took off each total but we think we were overcharged, since we didn't get separate itemized checks. The overall surly attitude of the server was just enough to tip the scales against ever coming back to Baba India.

We greatly enjoyed the food and thought the spice levels were correct. Beer and wine list is more extensive than most Indian restaurants. I like a good English ESB with my CTM and they can provide it. Service is efficient and the place is very clean, so for all of the above I'm willing to pay a little more than for take-out in Clifton.

I have been a patron on Baba from 8 years now. In that time I moved from Cincy to Washington DC and searched high and low for an Indian joint as good as Baba's chicken tikka masala. In my 7 years in that hugely diverse city with Indian on every corner, I never once found a place as good as Baba. Every time I'm in Cincy Baba is on my list of must haves. It really is a gem, and the servers re usually so kind and attentive. Fair warning, the later you go the hotter the food gets, so choose your heat scale accordingly!

Fill your face at the buffet but bring a wheel chair to get home. I like to catch the lunch buffet because it is tasty, hot, and very quick. The staff is always right there, kind, and ready to push you body to its 'do not fill past here' line. The establishment is nice enough, an old Hardee's I think, with white linen and crystal though it couldn't pass for semi-fine dinning, whereas Ambar is more suitable for dinner with someone you want to impress. I've been here dozens of times and make a point to visit this place when I'm in town. It was my fav but things were a little different recently. The prices have gone up with an almost noticeable drop in quality, so I dropped the rating a star. I still like to get the chicken curry, malai kofta, and everything else that will fit on the plate. So for now, eat up what you can fit in and rely on quantity over quality.

LOVE this place. Seriously. My favorite thing to get here Is the Matter Paneer and an order of Garlic Nan. Their vegetable samosas are also delicious and if you're new to Indian or just really hungry share the appetizer platter with someone (or don't share I don't judge). This is also strange but the rice is amazing and for me getting Indian that is very important. If Indian wasn't so overpriced I would eat here multiple times a week. Yummm.

Overall not bad, but not stellar either. Visited for dinner with a groupon and found much of the dinner overcooked. Started with keema samosa's for an appetizer and it it was obvious these were reheated in the microwave with warm and hot spots throughout. Pastry was dry and brittle. Main course of chicken tikka masala was generally good but the first two mouthfuls contained gristle/fat instead of succulent chicken. The rest of the dish was fine so maybe just a rare oversight. Flavor was good and to the desired spice level. Portions are generally on the large side. Plain nan was again overcooked and more like a poppadom in places than a moist warm flatbread. As previously stated it was generally a good meal, but the attention to detail from the kitchen needs to be looked at. There are other places in Cinci where you can find a better curry.

I don't have much to say about this place because unfortunately my husband and I left even before we ordered food because of their poor service & disgusting cups/utensils... When we entered the young guy who ushered us to our table was fine but then after we sat down some older woman came and asked us what we wanted to drink. We told her that we wanted water and then I noticed that my cup was completely hazy from a layer of dried up dishwasher soap or something. So I nicely showed her the cup. To my dismay she picked it up and traded it with the cup from the table right next to us and before even turning back to our table she poured water into the other cup so that I couldn't see if it was actually clean. She slammed the cup of water in front of me, rolled her eyes, and walked away... after she left I noticed that there was a half kernel of rice floating in my cup of water that she just poured which means the cup wasn't clean, again. We were so disgusted by their cleanliness (or lack there of) and their service that we left before ordering and went down the street to Shaan Indian restaurant which we were really pleased with. We love finding new restaurants but hate stumbling into places with horrible service like this...

Definitely stop in whenever in town. The chicken tikka masala & vegetable samosa's are hands down the best I have had! Plates & glasses can be a little dirty...that's the only things you have to look out for.

A good spot for indian cuisine lovers! I dont know about most of yall but I am always inclined to either get tiki masala, saag, or vindaloo and it is sooo much better than the other competive indian restaurants in or near Oakley. One thing I do not like about them: They are stingy with rice (for takeout obviously). For instance, it is common sense that you get a side of rice per entree but here if u order more than one entree in the same order they will not give you another rice but will charge you 1.25 for another. Just a fair warning, they will fight you on that issue until you get to the point where you just pay for it. But the flavor makes up for it though I guess.

This is my favorite Indian food in the city!!! I base my opinion on two of my favorite Indian food dishes: paneer makhani and chicken tikki saag. I've tried both dishes at several Indian restaurants in the city and Baba has the best - hands down! I typically order one of the two and my husband orders the other. We each get a piece of naan and fill up. We easily get an additional meal each to take home. You can also easily find $4 off coupons for Sunday - Thursday. The only thing I dislike about Baba is the service. I'm always waiting for more water, more rice, etc. When I'm at one of four occupied tables in the entire restaurant I shouldn't have to wait 15 minutes for my water to be refilled.

This past Friday night my wife and I decided to try Baba India, which we have driven past many times. The restaurant sits in a former fast food space as you can easily tell by the covered up drive thru window on one side of the building. It is actually a pretty large space inside with plenty of seating around a central buffet area. Unfortunately the buffet is only offered during lunch, as is typical with Indian restaurants. There is also a small patio outside, which I have never actually seen in use. Maybe that will change with the warming weather. My wife, fifteen month old son, and I were given our choice of tables upon entry. Immediately we were served glasses of water while we looked over the menu. After about five minutes time our server stopped by to take our order. Dining with a young child can be adventurous so we quickly placed our drink and dinner orders. As I was trying to observe the no meat on Friday during lent rule, I went with the Aloo Choley - chick peas and potatoes prepared North Indian style. This was my first experience with Aloo Choley, as I typically order a chicken based dish when eating Indian food, but I must say that it was pretty tasty. I ordered a 5 on the 1-6 spice scale, which turned out to be really hot. I was still able to eat the entire dish, but I wondered if I would have preferred the level 4. Along with the large bowl of shared rice, it was definitely a full meal. I'm not sure I would order it again, as I've had other Indian dishes that I like better, but it was a good substitute for my meatless day. My wife went with the Chicken Tikka Saag - boneless marinated chicken cooked with spinach, cream and tomato sauce. I only had small bites of the spinach and sauce, but from what I could tell this dish was excellent! My wife definitely enjoyed it as well, though the level 3 on the spice scale came out spicier than she had anticipated. It was too spicy for our young son, who actually enjoys some spice in his food. We also split a side of garlic nan, which was so large half of it was hanging off of the plate. It was easily more than enough for two to split and the flavor was very good. Our only other Indian experience in Cincinnati has been at Shaan, and I think these two restaurants are very close. I do recall being a little more excited about the food at Shaan, but that could have easily been true had I ordered something different at Baba India. It is definitely worth another visit for me to find out.

Baba used to be my favorite Indian restaurant, but Shaan in Hyde Park Plaza has now surpassed them. Food at Baba is still very good (especially the chicken tikka masala which is still better than Shaan), but Shaan excels at everything else. Competition has gotten stiffer bad Baba has not kept pace (although the garlic naan has improved and gotten slightly larger lol)

This place was as close to a high school hangout as I ever got. The fact that this was our regular spot, and not some pizza joint, is a testament not just to the quality of food at Baba, and it is excellent, but to the explosion of good Indian restaurants in Cincinnati in the mid 2000s. Yes, Baba has a lot of competition in the TriState, and it is still the best. When I first came here I ordered Lamb Korma every time (Try it. It's wonderful.), but I have since branched out. You should too. There are so many excellent dishes, the Saag Paneer, the Chicken Tikka and Chicken Tikka Masala, you'd have to come back many times to make a dent in the menu. The lunch buffet is the best introduction to this restaurant. It's inexpensive and flexible. Eat as much as you can sitting down or try to cram as much food as possible into a generously sized takeout container. My friends and I used to feed two people with one takeout buffet order ($4 per person at the time, a bargain). At dinner, budget-conscious diners can run into trouble here. Dinner at Baba, with appetizers, a lassi and a garlic naan, can hit $20 or more. The smart diner will stretch the order with rice and save half of it for lunch the next day. You don't have to exercise much self-restraint. It's too much food for one person. If you're in Oakley, you must try this Eastside institution.

Enjoyed a great dinner with friends last night at Baba for New Years Eve. The entire staff was very attentive to our table of 6 with drinks, water refills and our order. The food came very quickly minutes after we ordered. I enjoyed the Chicken Tikka Saag level 4, it definitely had a kick to it, spicy food on a cold winter night! The rest of the table enjoyed Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Curry, Fish Bhuna and Saag Paneer. After we were done, the staff split up the check individually and did not add an automatic gratuity for our group. I tipped 20%. I need to enjoy Baba more its right in my neighborhood and after this visit can't wait to come back soon.

My husband and I met up with another couple at Baba on a Friday night during the holiday season. Although the parking lot was full and the restaurant was packed, we were seated almost immediately and were given prompt attention. The waitress was really helpful with our ordering two vegetarian dishes and we were delighted with the meal. The flavor was spot-on, portion sizes were generous, and the ingredients were very fresh. I also tried the lentil soup and potato naan. Both were fantastic. I wasn't quite as thrilled with the mango lassi because it was too sweet, but to each his own! I have to say, the ambiance was not super romantic, as I've become accostomed to with Indian restaurants. The prices reflect the freshness and quality of the food plus fact that Baba pretty much always has a coupon out there (check the entertainment book or the bearcash magazine). Overall, not a bad option for authentic Indian food.

I'm very new to Indian Cuisine, and I've gotta tell you. I wish I had known about how delicious it was before now. I feel like I've lived under a rock and deprived myself from the sweet flavors of whatever things it is that I'm eating...Lemon rice is the most amazing thing EVER so I'm pretty disappointed when I go to a new place and I don't see it on their buffet. I am a wuss when it comes to spicy stuff and perhaps that's why I'd never given this yummy food a chance, but in all honesty the buffets I've tried have been pretty tame with the spice. The guy working there was so friendly and just downright a sweetheart. He was all by himself but kept the whole dining room in order. He picked up dirty dishes, checked on the happiness of the patrons and topped off our water every time it got even slightly low. It's honestly hard to give this place 3 stars because of his kindness, but even with being new to this style of food, I can say, I've had better. I feel like the buffet was really lacking.. it just didn't seem like there were a ton of choices or something. The food was good but it didn't blow me away. I really don't think I'd make the drive over to Oakley just to eat there. And this is so tiny of an issue that I almost don't want to bring it up, but the water had no ice in it. It was over 90 degrees outside and hotter than you know what. So, I wanted nothing more than a tall glass of ice water with a lemon slice. I'm sure if I asked him he would have been more than happy to bring me some ice and a lemon, but the poor guy was so busy that I didn't have the heart to ask him. If you're in that area already then definitely check it out, but if you're on the west side of town and simply looking for something different, I feel there are many better options to choose from.

I frequently eat at Guru India down in NKY and and it's always delicious so when I was up in the Hyde Park area I decided to try Baba India as it is owned by the same people. It was 4:00 on a Sunday and the place was empty except for one other group. The waitress was friendly and quick with getting our order and bringing our food out. The food was the exactly the same as Guru India so I had no complaints there. I honestly don't see how Indian food could get any better!

In the same family as Ambar, Akash, Guru, etc., Baba has the same menus as those places and same consistent Indian food. They recently added a little patio for outside dining, but I'm not sure I would really want to sit there with the cars whizzing by on Madison and the view of the UDF across the street. I've enjoyed both lunch and dinner here. The lunch buffet in particular is very good ($10)--lots of selections of vegetarian and chicken options, hot, fluffy rice and naan, etc. Although the last time I was there, no more samosas. Compared to Akash (downtown), I thought theirs was superior, if only because they had my favorite--Chicken Tikka Saag--on the buffet last time, which is never at Akash. The ambiance and service are both adequate. A dedicated parking lot is a nice bonus in Oakley. They also have a fairly decent selection of Indian beers (Taj Mahal being my favorite), and just recently added 3 more to the list. One quick tip, at lunch, just go up to the bar to pay when you're finished--they keep all the checks up there.

They have hands down the best appetizers I've had at an Indian restaurant. We had the aloo tika and the paneer pakora. The naan was okay, not bad but not the best I've had in Cincinnati. Their navratan korma was delicious, so much so that I forgot completely that it was a vegetarian dish by the time I'd finished. That's not knocking vegetarian dishes so much as me indicating just how rich the meal was. I've been to a good number of indian restaurants in Cincinnati. Based on my first time at Baba alone, I'd put them near the top of the list (if not the top). As noted by other reviewers, I enjoyed their service more than the others (mostly in the Clifton area) that I've been to.

Had the lunch buffet this past Friday and it was really good. The Tikka Masala and the Tandoori were great and the veggie dishes were really tasty. The mint chutney was the bomb and I could have kept eating it with the yummy naan. The service was great and they kept the water refills coming.

Am I wrong, or has Baba been slipping just a bit? When we first moved to Cincy three years ago, this was our Indian restaurant of choice, especially for the buffet on weekends. The buffet had a delicious selection of both veggie and meat dishes, featuring a broad palette of bold flavors, and Baba seemed to rotate dishes regularly. Even on the buffet, the tandoori chicken was really tasty, even better than what you'd get if you ordered it a la carte in most restaurants. In our last few visits, though, the buffet has started to feel a little tired. The same limited veggie selections--never more than two or three at a time--seem to appear over and over, and the multiple meat dishes taste to me like minor variations of the same butter-chicken recipe. The tandoori chicken is still great, though. The food is still pretty good, but not very exciting. Maybe it's just the bloom coming off the rose. Oddly enough, I don't think the food in the evenings is appreciably better than what you get from the buffet at lunchtime. Service has never been a strong point at Baba. Although a couple of the servers have been friendly and attentive during our many visits, too many others are oafish and/or brusque. Baba is housed in some kind of former fast-food restaurant, but I really like what the owners did with the place. It's a comfortable, pleasantly-lit, and relatively attractive restaurant, featuring a lot of booth seating and big windows. Baba gets a more diverse and interesting crowd than most East Side restaurants. FWIW, Baba is part of the family of Cinci Indian restaurants that includes Ambar in Clifton, Akash downtown, and one or two others.

Excellent nav rattan korma and malai kofta. Consistently great. Sometimes very crowded.

Have visited this place many times in the past..... But today the food had zero flavor and the price of the buffet went up to ten bucks a person. Quality declined, prices raised? Ill stick to Krishna from now on.

My first modern-day experience eating Indian food was with a co-worker at Baba. We figured a buffet would be a great way for me to delve into the 'genre' as I could try a selection of dishes. Fortunately, they featured standard entrees such as Chicken Curry and Chicken Makhani (which I had been recommended by a friend), which were both really great. The rice and naan--though plain--were fresh and delicious, and the latter is especially great dipped in tomato soup. Since the first time I went, I have gotten to try a variety of additional delicious foods (Mattar Paneer is now a favorite of mine) and I have been very happy every time I've frequented Baba for lunch. I have yet to order a dish from the menu, but why fix something that isn't broken? To be honest, I've never had anything off of their buffet that I didn't like. The fare is fresh, hot, flavorful, and very delicious. However, if you're looking for spice, I'd order off the menu, as it seems the food on the buffet is prepared at 0.

I'm a huge Indian food fan and had been searching for a great Indian restaurant since moving to Cincinnati last year. I'm a little picky, but I think I finally met my match at Baba. Baba is located in one of my favorite eastside neighborhoods, Oakley, and offers a killer lunch buffet. It's sister location is the famous Ambar in Clifton, which I haven't tried, so I can't speak to the similarities or differences. The selection at Baba isn't huge, but the food is incredible. The naan was cooked perfectly, and every dish I tried was great. The buffet is $10 per person, which is pretty standard compared to others in the area. The wait staff was friendly and I loved how attentive they were with refilling my drink. As far as the spice, the food wasn't extremely spicy, which I kind of liked, but may be a let-down to some. Overall, I loved Baba and it is now my official go-to Indian restaurant in the area!

Several friends have raved about Baba, and I finally decided to give it a try. Perhaps I had unrealistic expectations of the buffet size, but I was a little disappointed to find another average Indian restaurant. Don't get me wrong; everything I had was good. From my friends' testimonials I thought the buffet would have more variety...something that would surpass, say, Dusmesh. I also expected more because the same folks who own Ambar own Baba. The buffet had about six different kinds of curry, however only one was vegetarian: saag paneer. The rest had chicken, even the mushroom curry. For appetizers there were samosas but no pakoras. There were also no small bowls for mixing the coriander chutney and tamarind sauce. Again, the food was good, it just didn't live up to the reputation that I've heard about the restaurant. I'm willing to give Baba another try for dinner. Maybe it's an order off the menu kind-of place. Price per person: $10.00

The food is great as like Ambar (same owners). The perk is that the buffet allows you to get your food quickly which can be a challenge at times when visiting Ambar during lunch hours. Plus I have to admit that I really like to load up on their rice with sauce from the curry chicken. Why not 5 stars? Service - it could be a bit warmer. Even though I frequent the place pretty often, the hostess is just as indifferent as she's ever been.

I go here for the lunch buffet pretty frequently and it never dissapoints! Pros: 1) The food is delicious, similar to the quality of food at Ambar 2) Pretty good price for indian food Cons: 1) The servers seem kind of inattentive, I know its a buffet and I shouldnt expect amazing service, but I would like my drink refilled during a meal 2) The atmosphere and decor is not very indian, or very appealing I think it is an old fast food restaurant that was converted to this place

If you dig Indian, you must try Baba. A very clean, nicely laid out place. This place has all your staple Indian dishes and a lunch buffet (which I have never tried) so this review is just for ordering specific meals. The food is always quick to come out and piping hot ( some may say its too hot but i would rather let my food cool then get it cold). They have the usual spice level of 1-6 ( 1 being no spiciness and 6 being pretty spicy although not so spicy an average hot food lover could not handle it. I get a 5 most times. Their naan bread is some of the best I have had, the garlic naan being my go to flavor. The servers are all prompt and friendly and there is always someone walking around to refill your water. they have a full bar with delicious (but kinda pricey) mixed drinks. They also serve various domestic beers and a few imports- I always get a 22 ounce "Taj Mahal" with my meal. Prices are very reasonable and they often have coupons in the local magazines and groupons here and there.

I will never go back here again. I have eaten here with my friends and family almost once a week for years. Today, the person I was with didn't feel well and couldn't eat more than two bites of her lunch. I asked them to please put her food into a box so that she could take it home and I was told absolutely NOT. I explained that my friend had taken a small portion and had not gone back for seconds and simply wanted to take her food home for later. When I insisted that we be able to take the food that we paid for, the manager shouted horrible things at me and personally insulted us. I will NEVER go back!!

Excellent food and service. I took my toddler with me for dinner with friends, which can always be hit or miss. Our waiter was very attentive, made sure we had enough to drink, and brought out my child's food as soon as it was ready so I could prepare it before our food arrived. I didn't even have to ask. They food was amazing. I had a garlic nan and the chicken tikka masala. Amazing. I will definitely go back.

Ok. I'm prety sure this place is basically the same as Ambar in Clifton. That being said, it just doesn't seem as good for some reason. The food and service were very good. My chicken tikka masala was just as good as I expected it to be (even if a friend ordered me only 4/6 on the spicy scale), and my friends dinners all looked excellent too. I feel like if I'm neighborhood apathetic, I'd spend the extra minute to get to Ambar.and I don't feel bad about that because its the same owners. Bottom Line: I'd be back if I wasn't going to Ambar.

As my nickname plainly states, I will try any food once. If you don't, you may never find out that you love Indian food! I came here with a friend who is an Indian food addict, so I had some help ordering, otherwise, I probably would have been lost. The vegetable samosas were AMAZING....as was the garlic nan bread, and the chicken tikka masala, and the chicken biryani. I'm pretty sure that tikka masala is my new favorite food. I love how this is a family establishment. I'm pretty sure our waitress was the daughter of the owners, and the grandmothers refilled our water glasses. They were all very prompt and friendly. I'll be back!!!

I'm somewhere between 3 and 4 stars for Baba. The first 3-4 times I went there, it was great. It seems like my food recently hasn't been as amazing, but I'm not sure why. I think they must have gotten a new cook (or I started going at a different time), because the spice levels don't seem to be consistent. This is a big problem for me because I'm a wimp and can't tolerate much heat, so if it's too hot then I just can't eat it. Then I order a 1 and it's not interesting enough. What I have had there is the saag paneer, which I love, and the chicken tikka masala, which is also excellent. I've had the buffet once, which is nice to try new things (though when I went there weren't very many choices). There is usually a coupon on Valpak.com or citysearch, so check that out before you go (not valid for the lunch buffet and maybe for weekends). What people say about the service is true...there is this one lady who doesn't speak much english but fills water like a champ; but the servers all but disappear on you for the most part.

Yummm, So glad I have a doggie bag in the fridge for tomorrow! The Matter Paneer was mild and delicious, tender chunks of cheese and peas swimming in a tomato and cream, fragrantly spiced sauce. The curry chicken was tasty with just a subtle hint of heat. (ordered level #2, which was just perfect!) loved the texture and flavor of the perfectly steamed basmati rice with the slightly soft and crunchy naan, we had the perfect and most satisfying Indian dinner.

YES. While there are many excellent Indian restaurants in Cincinnati, the service is often.. lacking. At Baba we were actually greeted with smiles. Shocking. Our server was attentive, not rude at all, and didn't hover. The food was awesome. This may be our favorite even though we have to drive a little out of our way to get there.

Obsessed. I love Indian food, and Baba has the best. As some of the other reviewers have said, it's a very low key restaurant, but consistently excellent. I always order the same thing, the vegetable platter (various fried vegetarian things--including a samosa, fried cheese, potato pancake, pakora), saag paneer, and garlic naan. All delicious, all the time. For the main course they ask you to order on the spice scale 1-6, I usually go 4-5. I don't think they register the spiciness at this one as much as they do at Kanak--their restaurant in Montgomery, where a 5 was nearly too spicy for me. The best part is the assortment of sauces/chutneys. Like many Indian restaurants, they have a spicy tomato chutney, plum sauce, and I think a mint jalapeno type one... To be honest, I don't really know what they are. But they are exquisite. I put them on everything. They have a nice assortment of alcohol. Service is so-so, they're not overly friendly, but are very attentive. I'm overlooking service because the food is so good. They offer carry out, and I've never had a wait. The buffet is $8.50 I think, and dinner is around $40 for 2 people, including alcohol. Just go. Do it. And if you can't go to this one, go to one of their other ones (I think they're run by the same family, but the only other one I've been to is Kanak in Montgomery). Just writing this made me hungry, I've decided to go to lunch tomorrow. Thanks, Yelp :)

As many of you know, Indian food can be a bit tricky if you don't know what you're doing. For my girlfriend and I-we are fairly new to the world of India cuisine. Luckily for us, we went with some experienced friends to Baba in Oakley. The food and the service were both excellent. Our friends have a 9 month old baby and the wait staff was very patient regardless of the amount rice that was making its way to the floor instead of his mouth. The food was amazing. The 4 of us have pretty wimpy taste buds so all of our food was a 0. Regardless-it was delicious. We ordered 4 different dishes and shared. That seems to be the way to go. That way you get a little sampling of everything with some to take home. They recently completed an outside patio that unfortunately wasn't open when we went. It would've been a nice day to sit outside, so with the weather getting warm hopefully they'll get it opened up soon!! We will definitely be back!!

There have been years where I ordered carryout from Baba maybe 40 times. So apparently I think it's pretty good. Were it not for its sister restaurant, Ambar, Baba might be the best Indian in town. The food is reliably tasty and well-prepared. I'm a big fan of their chicken vindaloo and lamb rogan josh. If you dine in, be advised that one does not go to this (or any) Indian restaurant for the service. Warm and friendly it ain't, though it's never been flat-out terrible either. But the food is so good that you'll probably be okay with that.

I've been to Baba India on two difference occasions and both times have been great even if neither were the quickest meal ever. On my first trip, I was catching up with an old friend so the timing was not an issue at all - the second was a pre-concert dinner so we had to hurry the service more than I am usually comfortable with. Besides that little caveat - the food and the service have both been excellent. My North Indian Restaurant staple is Dal Makani and theirs definitely impresses and the portion size is generous. I've also tried their samosas (both the vegetarian and beef versions) and a variety of other appetizers and breads and they have all been quality. The menu seems expansive and they offer a lunch buffet (which I need to check out.) The interior isn't really anything to write home about (granted I don't really write home about anything, but if you do write home about interiors of restaurants, you probably will not write home about this one) but it is what it is. Parking should not be an issue either.

When I first starting going to Baba's, I wasn't a fan. I always ordered my favorite dish, chicken saag, and it wasn't nearly as good as Ambar's or Krishna's (both in Clifton). So, finally one night my boyfriend dragged me there since it's so much closer to us, and I went for my other favorite dish, chicken tikka masala. Well, they have won me with this dish. They should really adjust their pricing though, as if it weren't for the drive, I'd always still go to Ambar's first since they are in the same price point. Ambar has a better ambiance, and everything, I mean everything is a 10 at Ambar. This is probably why Ambar is always packed, where Baba's is slow. I say, lower your pricing, and you'll have a common visitor!

Baba India is not a large or an overly-decorated restaurant. However, it offers delicious food and friendly service. We had chicken tikka and chicken makhani (level 4) and both were quite delicious. The potato naan and the regular naan went well with the makhani sauce. If you like to try import beer, then go with the Flying Horse that comes in a 22oz bottle. It was a good complement to the spice flavors all around the dinner table. If you are near Oakley or want to try a new India place, Baba India is a very solid choice! P.S. Our bill for two (with 2 drinks) was $47 before tip.

I'm not normally an Indian fan, and I have to admit, the first time I went, I was apprehensive. Of course, I had heard a lot of things about this place, so I gave it a try. This restaurant turned me into an Indian fan. The food is fantastic. Their spicy levels are pretty reasonable. I myself do prefer more spicy food, so I tend to go for the higher numbers. I also do enjoy the exotic beer they have. The one draw-back I have is the wait staff. They tend to be very business-like, which is not bad. I myself do like my waiter or waitress to have some character because I like going out for the experience, not just the food.

  • Adolfo N.

Their food has never let me down, and I've had most everything on the menu, although my wife always gets the same dish, the paneer makhani, and she says it's the best in the city. The flavors are excellent, their naan is fluffy, and the service is always very attentive. Really, what else can you look for in your Indian restaurant? A magic carpet ride? when you find one.. let me know.

  • Kyle B.

The food is delicious, but I love Indian food and I'm not sure I have the most discerning pallet. The tandoori chicken is awesome. The tikka masala is spectacular too. I like coming with a group and trying a bite of everyone's food. The service was OK but they seemed a little annoyed the entire time and that was off-putting. I like the Clifton location Ambar a bit more for ambiance I think, but Baba is definitely a lot easier to get to and park.

  • Ed J.

I've only ever eaten lunch here from the buffet, but I've never been disappointed. There is always a curry or two and saag paneer or palak paneer. There are lentil dishes and vegetable pakoras, naan and raita, and tandoori chicken. Lots of different choices all kept hot, and since there is usually a crowd nothing sits out for long. All this bounty could be yours for right around ten dollars.

This used to be my go-to place for quick take out or a sit down Indian family style meal. It's clearly one of the most popular Indian places on the east side of town, as the tables are always full, the phone is always ringing, and the servers are always running around like they are just about to lose it. Because this place is so popular, you'll wait a little longer for your food and bill. I think they may tone their spices down for the white folks, because I've never gotten a true 5. They have recently expanded, so now they have more space for more frantic Indian meals, with a larger parking lot to match. They also have their liquor license and we've had larger groups (up to 10) on a week night without any hassle.

  • Sam N.

Lets be honest...I am an indian food addict. Ive been to some of the best Indian places around Cincinnati so new places I try have a lot to live up to. Baba's was pretty average. I came hungry for the lunch buffet and left full, though not completely satisfied. After noticing the freshly stained table cloth from the last customers that sat at our table, I saw a young girl walk barefoot up to the buffet with her mom. The last thing I want near my food is bare dirty feet...and who knows where her hands had been or what dishes they were touching! This made me rather nauseous to say the least -- the food was alright but its lack of spiciness didn't take that initial gross feeling in my stomach away. Luckily it was flavorful, and there was a decent variety of dishes to choose from. Maybe I need to give it a second chance, but the amount of amazing, spicy, hot saag paneer waiting for me in Clifton probably won't let that happen.

  • J K.

Baba India feels like the unloved child of the Ambar family. While the food is on par with Ambar and the lunch buffet is a great deal, everything from the parking lot to the half-filled dining area lacks the lively atmosphere that you'd find in Ambar. Still, not a bad dining option if it's nearby, but if I were coming from out of town, I'd rather go to Ambar.

  • Stephanie S.

Naan absolutely makes or breaks an Indian restaurant for me. It is the most important part of my experience. It wasn't overdone or burnt, but it was still done enough to not flop over after dipping it in their yummy sauces. Very nice beer selection, the service is great and the food was very satisfying. Most of the indian restaurants I go to are quick in & out, Styrofoam places, so the white tablecloths provided an added bonus. Definitely one of my top 3 favorite indian places in the city.

    (4)
  • RJ S.

Very tasty - I think I'm addicted to the chicken tikka masala. The service time can be hit or miss at times, but always friendly and courteous. The food is some of the best in the city and unlike it's sister restaurant Ambar, parking is easy at Baba.

I've been all over Indian row in NYC, and this is still my favorite Indian food. I prefer it for dinner, but the buffet is pretty good. Everything here is fantastic, you can't go wrong with anything on the menu.

This is by far the best indian restaurant in CIncinnati if you are looking for casual dining. The buffet for lunch is wonderful- it does rotate so this is a great way to sample different items on the menu and discover your new favorite dish. I actually took my 72 year old grandmother who had never had indian food in her life to baba and she LOVED It! It was a slight trick because she thought it was a fast food place-still resembles it. This is very casual restaurant, so dont expect fine dining- just good Indian food fast. My favorite classic dish is Chicken Tikka Masala. This is a great dish to introduce someone to indian food (yes, there are people in this world that have never had indian food!).

  • Stacy A.

While the dining room and servers at Baba India leave something to be desired, this Indian food is the best around. I regularly call in a carry out order for the Chicken Tikka Misala and Naan. Sometimes if I'm feeling a little crazy I'll get some Chicken Curry also (to be shared with friends of course - the portions are generous). The chicken in the Tikka Misala is shredded and tender while I do find the chicken in the curry a little more dry. The food at Baba can't be beat and is something I sorely miss now that I've moved from Cincy. This will likely be on the rotation when I'm back in town though.

My husband and I love Baba India! Their lunch buffet is underwhelming, but everything I've tried on the dinner menu is fantastic. The mango lassi is a deliciously sweet yogurt drink. Usually, I order from the vegetarian entrees, as they are richer in flavor. The hostess is particularly brusque, but after awhile she seems part of the charm. Also, there's never any wait (good for us, bad for them, I suppose).

I have been frequenting the Baba lunch buffet for several years. The food is pretty decent and the lunch buffet has a nice selection at a good value. However, the servers are some of the more unfriendly people I have encounted in the restaurant business. While I certainly do not expect top notich service at a lunch buffet, the times that I have been to Baba for dinner, the staff has been pretty unpleasant. All in all, Baba offers good food but loses points for service.

Probably the indian restaurant in town that has some of the freshest ingredients. I'd like to say it's less heavy as well, but that's difficult to say about restaurant indian food in general. In any case, delicious food and maybe $1 cheaper than Ambar. Location is also good. It's off of Madison near the Fresh Market. I think they have lunch buffets on the weekends but haven't tried this yet. I've heard it's good though.

I miss this place so much! I live in San Diego (lived in Cincy for a year) & none of the Indian food out here compares to that of Baba India. The Matar Paneer is so creamy. They have the best vegetable Pakoras- very fresh and crispy. Oh, and there Garlic Naan is amazing! For my birthday, I wanted Baba India for breakfast, lunch & dinner. That's how good it is. I also got one of my friends who was completely scared of Indian food to try it. Now he eats there all the time. His favorite is the Lamb Saag. This is an awesome lace. You won't regret it (unless you get the really spicy stuff...ewwwww)

Your classic typical Indian restaurant, lunch buffet and all. But why complain about something reliable? And Baba always is. It's owned by the same people as a couple of other Indian restaurants around town, but I prefer this location because there's usually no wait here. Great samosas and even better naan bread. A standby: I can always count on Baba.

  • James W.

Baba India offers a variety of acceptable to excellent dishes on their lunch buffet. The excellent dishes include their saag, aloo gobi (or a similar aloo dish on some days), chicken vindaloo, and the best Tandoori chicken in town. Acceptable dishes include the rather bland choley and chicken curry. Fridays and Sundays have the best selection on the buffet, and they have bhatura as well as naan on those days. Tandoori chicken and saag are always present, but other dishes come and go. Food quality varies from day and day. The excellent dishes are always worthwhile, ranging from simply good to amazing.

Run by the same owners as Ambar India on Ludlow, this is the best lunch deal on the East side of town! Their lunch buffet (11:00 - 2:30) is a great way to introduce finicky eaters to Indian cuisine, not to mention available every day of the week! Everything seems to be prepared in small batches, so it's always fresh and hot. Order off the menu or carry out, and you're treated with extremely quick service (when we visited), and great food. The service still leaves much to be desired - they always seem like they could care less about you being there. (I think it's all in the welcome... It always feels like you're interrupting them to be seated?) In all the times I've visited, I've only had one particular server that was communicative and helpful... but the food is fantastic and quick, so I keep going back. No one ever said great food was easy! Five stars for the food, three stars for the service. Definitely try the garlic naan, special chicken tikka masala, chicken makhani, lamb korma, vegetable samosas, and the saag paneer. You really can't go wrong here!
